THE Institute of Metals Division Lecture in 1936, given by R. F. Mehl, on diffusion in solid metals1, was introduced with the statement that "the phenomena of diffusion are intimately related to many basic prob-lems of the metallic state, but in addition to this the process of diffusion is of first importance practically." In view of the scope of that lecture, it does not seem necessary to review the importance, history or present status of diffusion problems. One aspect of the subject of diffusion that has received little attention became of some immediate importance in the course of a study on segrega-tion. When a solid solution alloy freezes, the familiar mechanism of solidification requires that the first nuclei formed be low in solute con-centration, with a resultant normal segregation or coring effect during freezing. Theoretically, diffusion of solute atoms during solidification should result in a homogeneous solid solution. Actually, of course, it is impossible in most binary alloys to obtain a cooling rate that will permit diffusion to eliminate coring in the freezing dendrites. For a given alloy, the extent of diffusion attained up to the point of final solidification will determine the degree of enrichment in solute atoms of the final liquid phase. The flow of this liquid into dendritic contraction channels and the solute concentration of the liquid seem to be the determining factors as to whether the final gross segregation is normal, inverse or absent. The purpose of the present study of diffusion was to determine to some extent the separate diffusion rates of copper and magnesium into pure aluminum with a view to clarifying previous results on segregation in these alloys; i.e., the fact that under similar freezing conditions alumimum-copper alloys segregate inversely and aluminum-magnesium alloys segre-gate normally. Of concomitant interest were the questions of the homogenization times required for segregated ingots or partially melted, i.e., "burnt," structures, and the solution heat-treatment times required for cast, hardenable aluminum-copper and aluminum-magnesium alloys, for worked and annealed structures, and so forth.

So much has already been wimitten on this vast subject of ground movement and subsidence, and so many data collected and commented upon, that in this paper the author proposes to confine himself to the submission of some plans showing what has actually occurred in the mining of several of the orebodies which have come under his direction during the last 20 years or so at Rio Tinto, Spain. Some notes are added for the purpose of describing the plans. The author does not attempt to give his opinion as to the reasons why the subsidences have occurred in the manner in which they are found, but confines himself to giving as true a picture as possible of the movements that have taken place. Effects of Excavation on Ground Movement Broadly, the effects of excavations on the overhead or adjacent ground can be classified under three headings, as follows: 1. Ground movements due to excavations made from surface only, such as those made in opencasts where no excavations underlie them. The stability and strength of the ground to resist movement must determine the slopes. 2. Ground movements due to underground excavations only; i. e., where the surface is not removed. 3. Ground movements due to a combination of both; i. e., from excavations taking place from the surface for the purpose of stripping an orebody and recovery of the ore to a certain horizon combined with excavations being carried out below, at the same time, for the winning of the ore below the horizon at which mining by stripping or opencasting under the specific conditions is no longer economical. Nos. 1 and 2 represent independent and distinct problems and No. 3 is a combination, which presents results much more difficult of explanation. The accompanying plans and sections give examples of what has occurred under the three conditions. Unfortunately, the class of ground is not exactly the same in them all, but the difference is not greater than is generally encountered over districts of equal area. THE New Cornelia Branch of the Phelps Dodge Corporation is at Ajo, Pima County, Ariz. It is at the southern terminus of the Tucson, Cornelia and Gila Bend Railroad, which connects with the Southern Pacific Railroad at Gila Bend, Ariz., approximately 43 miles to the north. HISTORY Early history of the Ajo district has been related by A. W. Allen1 and by T. A. Rickard.2 Briefly, steps looking to the large-scale development of the ore body were instituted as early as 1912. This work culminated in the equipment of the property for open-pit mining by steam shovels. Ores initially mined carried economic amounts of copper carbonates as the principal copper-bearing mineral. Treatment methods developed for the extraction of the copper content involved leaching and a 5000-ton leaching plant was constructed and placed in operation in early 1917. Description of methods and equipment employed in this plant has been given by A. A. Tobelmann and James A. Potter.3 As exhaustion of the carbonate ore body neared, and mining oper-ations exposed an adequate tonnage of sulphide ores, a 5000-ton con-centrator was constructed for their treatment. That plant has been described by H. Kenyon Burch.4 Construction was completed and the plant was placed in operation in early 1924. Changes made in the original plant to improve practices and increase production will be the subject of subsequent paragraphs of this paper.

PERHAPS the most interesting paper of the subsidence session on Monday morning was that by Roland D. Parks entitled "Yieldable Metal Props for Underground Support." This paper described the development of a telescoping prop made from two pieces of pipe. The lower and larger in diameter has cast in it a soft metallic alloy which is slowly extruded through an orifice in the upper and smaller piece of pipe. In this way, the length of the prop decreases gradually as the load from the roof increases. The stress-strain diagram for these props, as tested in the laboratory, is almost ideal, and can be duplicated satisfactorily in successive tests. They have not yet been tested underground. Another paper of much interest was presented by Prof. P. B. Bucky. It is an addition to his series on structural models as applied to mining and was entitled "Effect of Approximately Vertical Cracks in the Behavior of Hori¬zontally Lying Roof Strata." It was illustrated by motion pictures of a model under test. After explaining the un¬derlying theory, the apparatus and the mode of testing, Prof. Bucky set forth the effect of vertical cracks in a mine roof, as follows: (a) the wider the crack, the weaker the roof; (b) where the sides of the crack are in juxtaposition, there is little weakening of the roof; (c) grouting cracks whose sides are not in contact restores the strength of the roof until it may be as strong as, or stronger than the uncracked roof. Small paper props helped sustain the roof. Both the nature of the material and its bonding affect its behavior under stress.

For a great many years fusion welding has been used in and around petroleum refineries, but it is only within six or seven years that the more important pressure vessels have been constructed by this process, because before that time the properties of fusion welds would not withstand such rigorous service. Since the adoption of fusion welding for the construction of this equipment, the refiner has required pressure vessels suitable for operation over a very wide range of conditions. On the one hand, vessels must operate at extremely high temperatures, in the range of 950" to 1000° F., and on the other vessels must be suitable for operation at sub-zero temperatures down as low as —75" F. Also, vessels are required suitable for operation at pressures upwards of 1000 lb. per sq. in., and as low as a 29-in. vacuum. In addition, vessels are required to withstand the attack of very corrosive mediums. It has been a rather difficult task for the fabricator to meet all of these requirements, but as a result of the extensive research carried on by steel manufacturers and several fabricators of class I vessels, practically all of these demands have been met. In order to meet the refiners' requirements for this wide range of conditions, the fabricator has worked closely with the metallurgist. This has enabled him to choose the proper base metal for each service condition, but it has been the fabricator's problem to develop a welding rod and welding technique, as well as a heat-treatment, that would produce in the welded vessel characteristics in and around the weld comparable to those in the base metal. Where corrosion is not a serious problem, and where the operating temperatures are not too high, ordinary carbon steel has served very well. But, when corrosion is serious, and/or when the temperatures are either very high or very low, it is necessary to use some form of alloy steel to give satisfactory service. A great deal of credit is due to the members of the Boiler Code Committee and also to the members of the Joint A.P.I.-A.S.M.E. Committee, who have formulated codes that insure the safety of the

It is nearly twenty years since Dr. Raymond, then U. S. Commissioner of Mining Statistics, wrote the first paper (so far as I have been informed) upon the education of tile mining engineer, as a distinct profession for American youth. At that time nearly all the prominent mining engineers in the country had studied in one or more of the foreign schools, or had reached their high standing through years of experience in the school of life. The paper mentioned five schools in the United States in which some attention was paid to the teaching of mining engineering, but as four of them had barely graduated their first classes, their influence had not begun to make itself widely felt. Two years later the American Institute of Mining Engineers was formed, and it has been a most potent factor in the problem of "disseminating information on mining and metallurgical subjects," so potent that the need of a national school of mines as headquarters for information as well as for instruction is no longer urged. The number of schools also increased, and in 1876 Abram S. Hewitt, in his Presidential address on "A Century of Mining and Metallurgy in the United States,'' gave a list of fourteen. In 1876 the series of discussions, led by Holley's admirable paper, brought the whole subject of technical education before the country. These discussions, while mostly devoted to the engineering professions in general, touched upon the question of mining and metallurgicel training to some extent. Since that time several papers, inspired by the publication of that series of discussions, have appeared in our Transactions, and several notable addresses have been delivered at the opening or at the commencement exercises of various schools. But nothing directly bearing upon the curriculum of the mining and metallurgical schools has ever appeared in our annual volumes. As education is one of the many-sided subjects which cannot be discussed too often, I have ventured to bring it up again. Plating iron with copper has received great attention from practical and scientific men, but, aside from the deposit secured by immersion of iron in copper salts, by electro-plating, or by welding together thin sheets of iron and copper, these efforts have met with no success. Failure of these efforts, in the production of copper plating, has been due to the fact that the conditions normally and necessarily present in the plating operation are antagonistic to the production of copper-plated iron. In most, if not quite all of them, a bath of molten copper has been used. The temperature of a molten copper bath is so high that the iron becomes oxidized before it can be immersed in the molten copper, and unless a protective flux for the molten copper is used, the surface of the copper will become oxidized, and, in any event, the plated iron will oxidize immediately on its being withdrawn from the molten bath. I recently had the pleasure of visiting the works of The Metals Plating Co. at Elizabeth, N. J., where I witnessed the plating of iron sheets with copper by a new process.l The plating metal is applied to the sheet in the form of a liquid mixture by means of rolls, such as inking rolls. The sheet, after being coated with the mixture, is automatically carried forward and deposited on a link-belt conveyor, which carries it through a furnace maintained at a temperature well above that of molten copper. The basic principle involved in this method lies in the application of the plating metal to the sheet while the sheet is cold and then melting the metal in place on the sheet under conditions which are favorable to the formation of the plating. Plating Mixture The liquid plating mixture is composed of either copper oxide or finely divided copper, or a mixture of both, ground to the consistency of a light varnish in a crude oil having an asphaltic base, of a specific gravity of from 14" to 16' Be. At the beginning of a Henry M. Howe lecture it seems fitting to refer to Howe's great contributions to steel metallurgy, and particularly to the literature thereof. Most of my predecessors in this role have been able, from their association with him, to give direct testimony as to his great services; but although connected with him for years in a business way, I am less familiar with what might be called his academic side, except as it is embodied in his utterances, written and oral. Howe was adept in his genial way in extracting information in any line which, at the time, was of interest to him. In a technical lecture one expects as a rule new knowledge—something about recent advances relating to the subject. On this occasion, however, I will ask you to go back with me to the primary department of steel lore, as the title of my lecture shows, to review the more fundamental features in that field for the purpose of seeking some gaps which we can fill and so give the subject renewed interest. In thus going back one must inevitably repeat many familiar facts, but that seems to be necessary in order to reach a clear understanding of the unrecorded matters. The full interpretation of a steel analysis is at present unattainable, though much progress toward that end has been made. The ultimate analysis, giving the percentages of the five commonly determined elements, does indeed usually give a fair idea of what the steel is, and is ordinarily enough, with knowledge of its history and physical condition, to enable it to be assigned to some purpose or use for which it is reasonably suitable. But discrepancies arise. Every maker and every user of steel knows, from at least occasional examples in his own experience, that the ultimate analysis is insufficient by itself to enable one to tell positively, from its interpretation, either the mechanical properties of the steel or its adaptability to the purpose for which it was made. Further, if, while having the specified composition, it is abnormal or unsatisfactory, why it is so. Good, bad and indifferent steels may have substantially the same ultimate analysis.

(San Francisco Meeting, September, 1915) THROUGH wide experience at numerous mills in the United States I have found that there is a decided difference of opinion among the producers of steel as to what constitutes commercially sound steel. Some metallurgists insist upon having, for certain grades of steel, a so-called "open steel," -i.e., one which contains numerous blowholes of varying sizes, and consequently but little volume of true pipe, although a central intermittent shrinkage cavity often extends well down into the ingot: Such blowholes and pipe are expected to weld up during rolling or forging, because their surfaces are not oxidized. Even if this be admitted, included slag particles and a high degree of segregation are bound to be present in the product of such ingots. Blowholes are the result of an oxidized heat, and all heats, unless made or finished in the electric furnace, are oxidized more or less. Subsequent deoxidation, or rather degasification, either in the ladle or in the mold, or in both, is necessary to reduce or prevent blowholes. As is well known, a greater yield of billets or sheets is secured from the ingot by allowing the formation of blowholes, but this is undoubtedly obtained at the expense of the quality of the product. Decided segregation of carbon, phosphorus, and sulphur, as well as small included slag particles, undoubtedly exists throughout the greater portion of all so-called open steel, and cannot be removed by cropping. The first requisite for sound, homogeneous steel ingots and blooms is therefore, in my opinion, so to treat the steel in the furnace, ladle, and mold that "piping" steel is produced. The line of demarcation between harmful and so-called "harmless" blowholes is practically impossible to define. Is it not, therefore, the better and safer practice to use means for the elimination of blowholes and correspondingly reduce the segregation and allow the formation of a well-defined shrinkage cavity or pipe .at the upper end of the ingot? Since 1904, when exploration of the Mayari deposits of iron ore in northeastern Cuba was undertaken, there llas been increasing interest in these ores. Tlie Transactions contain numerous references to t1ieln.l This iron ore, which is shipped to the Tinited States in the nodulizecl state, has been thoroughly tested and found very valuable; the deposit covers over 25,000 acres and there is in sight over 500,000,000 tons of ore that, by systematic mining, runs practically constant in composition. With nickel and chromium present, also titanium in sufficient quantities to attract attention, as well as extremely low phosphorus and sulfur contents, the iron founder is naturally interested in the utilization of RInpari ore for pig iron for the better grades of finishrtl iron products. The present point of coilsn~iil)tion ol ILlapri ore is at Sparrow's Poi111, where hlayari pig iron of ally desiretl coml>osition is made. The composition of the dried ore is about as follows: Iron -29 per cent., silica 3 pc.r cent., nickel 1 per cciit., chroiniun~ 1.5 per cent., alumina 11 per cent., ant1 coinbined water 13 per cent. Reduction of silicon from blast-furnace-type slags by carbon-saturated iron is a very slow reaction even under conditions of rapid stirring. Equilibrium under atmospheric pressure of carbon monoxide was approached from both sides, and the silica-silicon relation was established at temperatures of 1425º to 1700°C for slags containing up to 20 pct Al2O3. Silicon carbide is formed by reaction of graphite with high silica slags and the conditions for its formation were determined. Activities of SiO2 and of CaO in their binary solutions at 1600°C were determined. The effects on the activity of SiO2 were established for additions of 10 to 20 pct AI2O3 and of 10 pct MgO. STUDIES of chemical reactions between blast-*>-5 furnace slags and metal have been focussed on the transfer of sulphur from metal to slag. The important role which silica reduction plays in this process' has led to a study of the transfer of silicon from slag to metal and the equilibrium represented by the equation SiO2 (in slag) + 2C (graphite) = Si + 2CO (g). [I.] The authors2 have published an account of the experimental method employed in attacking this problem and of three series of experimental results at 1600°C. This paper contains data on some additional compositions and extends the observations to cover the temperature range 1425° to 1700°C. The data are used to determine the activity of silica in the slags. As in the earlier experiments, the atmosphere was carbon monoxide which flowed through the furnace at 150 ml per min. In certain heats designated in the tables and figures, the gas was bubbled through the melt using a graphite tube. The latter increased in porosity during a run and in some cases bubbling ceased as indicated by cessation of surging. Some results were discarded for this reason. Experimental Results The new data are shown in Tables I through V and both old and new data are plotted in Figs. 1

Geophysical methods of prospecting taken as a whole do not seem to offer much promise to a young man planning to enter them in the future. They have come to stay, to be sure, and they will continue in at least moderate use for a long time. Domestic use of those methods presumably is at a maximum at the present time. Geophysical prospecting is expensive; the effects of the law of diminishing returns in efficiency in finding prospects can already be recognized. Small oil companies, independent oil operators, and royalty buyers have been doing much geophysical work. But in face of the increasing costs of discovery of prospects and in face of the probably decreasing favorability of the prospects discovered, I expect to see a sharp drop in their use of geophysics within the next 10 years. The major oil companies and the larger small oil companies will continue to use geophysics indefinitely, but it seems doubtful whether the very extensive domestic campaigns of a few companies will be maintained for many years, certainly not for 10 years. The use of the geophysical methods in foreign countries has not yet reached its peak, and probaby will continue to increase for several years. That peak level of activity will probably be held for 10 years, although the site of maximum activity will shift from country to country; by the end of 25 years from now, I should expect the foreign use of the methods to have leveled off to one-fourth to one-half the peak level. Foreign service in geophysics does not seem to offer an attractive career, except for men of exceptional disposition. Young men just out of college, who are willing and who can afford to spend three or four years having a fling at adventure before settling down, will find it attractive, but when their tour of foreign service is over, they probably will have harder work finding a job than when they were seniors, and their foreign experience will count for little, except for further foreign service. A few men, mainly the higher men, will have headquarters at civilized or semi-civilized cities and towns or at permanent oil-company towns, and can

Introduction There is probably no field in which materials research has played a greater role than that of electronics. However, to trace present and future patterns of materials research in electronics is not an easy assignment, since this industry has a high degree of dynamism in its growth, and is busily engaged today in the scientific improbabilities of only recent yesterdays. On the other hand, this task seems especially appropriate since electronics is a truly frontier industry - one whose place in American industries has advanced from 50th prior to World War II to 6th in 1967, with sales of more than $22 billion. And this growth has been associated with the equally rapid progress of science and technology over the period - in particular with the emergence of materials science as a vital force in underscoring this progress. For several reasons this parallel growth is not too surprising. First, by its very definition electronics is a science that essentially deals with the nature, behavior, detection, generation, control and utilization of electrons in solids or at their surfaces. Second, in the electronics industry, systems are made of an integration of components, and these components with their interconnections are made of materials. Thus, the basic building blocks of systems are materials; and it has been largely the advances in materials research and technology that have led to new and improved devices and systems. It follows, therefore, that the broadening of the frontiers in electronics through the exploration of new territories is tantamount to scientific discovery and materials innovation to a degree found in no other major industrial activity. But to put this in the proper perspective of present and future materials trends, it would be appropriate first to survey historically the progress in electronics by pointing out major scientific discoveries and associated materials research patterns that have led directly to its tremendous growth. Then from this base we can consider recent trends in materials research that could form the basis for future progress in the electronics industry. In my review I shall examine the areas most familiar to me, so I must acknowledge at the outset that this survey is not all-inclusive.

At the beginning of a Henry M. Howe lecture it seems fitting to refer to Howe's great contributions to steel metallurgy, and particularly to the literature thereof. Most of my predecessors in this role have been able, from their association with him, to give direct testimony as to his great services; but although connected with him for years in a business way, I am less familiar with what might be called his academic side, except as it is embodied in his utterances, written and oral. Howe was adept in his genial way in extracting information in any line which, at the time, was of interest to him. In a technical lecture one expects as a rule new knowledge-—something about recent advances relating to the subject. On this occasion, however, I will ask you to go back with me to the primary department of steel lore, as the title of my lecture shows, to review the more fundamental features in that field for the purpose of seeking some gaps which we can fill and so give the subject renewed interest. In thus going back one must inevitably repeat many familiar facts, but that seems to be necessary in order to reach a clear understanding of the unrecorded matters. The full interpretation of a steel analysis is at present unattainable, though much progress toward that end has been made. The ultimate analysis, giving the percentages of the five commonly determined elements, does indeed usually give a fair idea of what the steel is, and is ordinarily enough, with knowledge of its history and physical condition, to enable it to be assigned to some purpose or use for which it is reasonably suitable. Rut discrepancies arise. Every maker and every User of steel knows, from at least occasional examples in his own experience, that the ultimate analysis is insufficient by itself to enable one to tell positively, from its interpretation, either the mechanical properties of the steel or its adaptability to the purpose for which it was made. Further, if, while having the specified composition, it is abnormal or unsatisfactory, why it is so. Good, bad and indifferent steels may have substantially the same ultimate analysis.

HIGH strength, high-conductivity copper-base alloys have found considerable use in the resistance welding and electrical industry in the form of castings, forgings, or wrought products. There are a number of parts utilized by these industries which would lend themselves to manufacture by powder metallurgical methods provided the required physical and electrical properties are obtainable with such methods. The present paper describes the results of a study of certain copper-base powder metallurgical products susceptible to precipitation hardening. COPPER POWDERS The general types of commercially available copper powders are flake, spherical and electrolytic. Micrographs of these three types are shown in Figs. I, 2 and 3. The difference in particle shape is pronounced and obvious. The type of powder used is determined, or at least indicated, by the final properties desired in the finished article. The type of powder employed during the present investigation was electrolytic powder shown in Fig. 3, and was chosen because of its particular adaptability to the work described in this paper. The screen and chemical analyses of this powder are shown in Table I. In the preparation of compacts of high electrical conductivity, the purity of the copper powder is of importance in addition to other factors, such as density and the state of internal stresses. These variables were studied briefly by pressing a number of compacts to various pressed densities, sintering them for one hour in hydrogen at 975°C. and repressing. The size of the finished compacts was ¼ by ¾ by 8 in. The time interval from the application to the termination of pressure was approximately 20 sec. Some of the compacts were annealed before testing. The results are listed in Figs. 4 to 8, inclusive. [ ] In Fig. 4 the curves of pressed density vs. compacting pressure, and sintered density versus compacting pressure show the typical direct relationship of pressure and density. Compacting pressures exceeding about 30 tons per sq. in. result frequently in expansion during sintering for the type of powder used. Fig 5. indicates that variations in the initial pressed density within the range of about 5 to 6 grams per c. c., affect only slightly the pressure required to obtain a

Trona ore at the Westvaco, Wyo., mine of FMC Corp. has been obtained by room-and-pillar methods since the mine began operation. The flat- lying, 10-ft thick trona (Na2CO3.NaHCO3.2H2O) is covered by 1500 ft of weak shale and sandstone, and extraction of pillars on the retreat quite often throws large amounts of weight onto development workings. Weak shales in the roof and floor fail rapidly, and the mine ribs slough to such an extent that mining often becomes very difficult. When this occurs, efficiency goes down, costs go up, and the risk to men and machinery increases greatly. Difficult mining conditions in the early '60s forced a re-evaluation of all presently known mining techniques in bedded deposits. Many room-and-pillar mining plans were compared with the system in use at that time, but none of them offered a better solution to the roof control problem. Longwall techniques were also seriously considered, but machinery was not available that would cut the hard trona seam and still maintain the productivity obtained from room-and-pillar sections. However, since roof control in the longwall methods appeared to be more satisfactory than that found in room-and-pillar techniques it was believed that a new technique using the longwall principle and based on rock mechanics should be tried rather than previously known pillaring methods.
