It was once aptly said that a sign of approaching senility is ceasing work on a subject and beginning to talk about it. Perhaps that explains why, after many Years in which Part of my duties has been the training of college men in various branches of petroleum exploration geophysics, I have now begun to talk about it. In making an outline of what I believe ought to be discussed under the general heading of the title, I found it almost impossible to subdivide the ideas into an ordered set of discrete subjects. Rather, the pertinent remarks seemed to interlock almost everywhere. The consequence is that it will be necessary to start with the conclusions and then try to justify them by jumping back and forth. However, based on the types of men with whom I have had to deal, the subject naturally divides itself into two parts. In the first part, I should like to deal with the case of those undergraduates whose natural bent is toward the physical sciences and who may decide to enter the geophysical fold as a career. The other part will deal with those many men, geologists and engineers for the most part, who have drifted into exploration geophysics by one means or another, and whom it is necessary to train for geophysical work while they are occupied in their routine jobs. Here it may be in point to remark that most men in exploration geophysics at Present have been developed from precisely the latter group, and that the problem of training here is of great importance even though, in this paper, it will perforce occupy the secondary place. Training oF a Geophysicist The outstanding reason for the perplexing problem on the training of a geophysi-cist is that ideas differ on the answer to the question: "what is a geophysicistp" ln any of the scientific "specialties," like physics, for example, it is relatively simple to pigeonhole a man as being qualified to call himself a physicist. That appellation applied to an individual does not mean that he has mastered only the branches of intellectual endeavor usually associated under the broad name of "physics." we expect him also to have a more than mere acquaintance with mathematics and chemist~ and some understanding of most of the other sciences. But note this important point—we expect our physicist, whom we have chosen as an example, to be intelligently trained so that, if necessary, he can and will know how and where he can get the proper information on a subject in which he is not a specialist; he will know how to absorb that information and turn it to his uses. It seems to me that this is the outstanding characteristic of a man who can truly call himself a scientist: that he is a specialist in one of the broad branches of science in that he has enough training and discipline in the scientific approach so that, when called upon to do so, he can inteugently absorb knowledge from another bordering science (and all sciences not only border upon one another to some extent, but more often, overlap One another), and

Discussion of the paper of James Douglas, presented at the New Haven meeting, February, 1909, and published in Bulletin No. 29, May, 1909, pp. 439 to 451. JAMES DOUGLAS, New York, N. Y. (communication to the Secretary*) :-In my paper on the Conservation of Natural Resources, I referred to the slow replacement of bee-hive ovens by the by-product ovens as a most notable instance of waste. And I quoted from Mr. Parker's report for .1906 an explanation given by him in accounting for the small production of by-product coke. It was that the markets for the by-products of the coke-ovens was so limited that some of the ovens constructed were out of operation. His report on the manufacture of coke in 1908 1 does not record an improvement, and attributes the strange fact that we alone, of all the industrial peoples, delay the adoption of this cardinal improvement from the continuance of the same almost inexplicable cause. To quote again from his report, lie says (p. 241): "The year 1908 was not marked by any notable gain in the construction of by-product coking plants, though some new work was done. There was a net increase of 115 in the number of completed ovens in 1908 over 1907, the totals for the two years being, respectively, 3,892 and 4,007. The additional equipment consisted of 140 Koppers regenerative ovens built at Joliet, I11., by the United States Steel Corporation, but this increase was partly offset by the dismantling of Y5 Semet Solvay ovens at Sharon, Pa., the net gain being 115 ovens. Included in the total of 4,007 completed ovens in 1908 are 152 Newton-Chambers ovens at Vintondale, Pa., but as no recovery of by-products was made at this plant in 190S, the production of coke is included with that from beehive ovens. The 56 ovens of the same type at Pocahontas, Va., have not been in practical operation since they were first. installed. In addition to these there was one other by-product plant of 120 ovens. Oat. was not operated during the year. The number of retort ovens producing coke in 1908 was 3,679, as compared with 3,811 active ovens in 1907." Since D. C. Jackling was famous for his adeptness at organizing and training teams of operating personnel, the subject of mine management is particularly appropriate for a Jackling Lecture. In fact, it is doubly appropriate because in very basic ways Jackling's career changed the nature of the tasks and challenges facing a mine manager. Management of mines, of course, is the art of finding and winning minerals economically from the earth's crust, and it involves the use of all the engineering sciences. But also of prime importance is a skill which is not yet a science-the area of management often referred to as human engineering. Since expenditures on staff and labor may well involve more than 50% of the direct costs of operating a mine, ability at human engineering is just as important as the ability to plan and put into effect the most efficient operating procedures.

J. W. Tomlison—It seems probable that the author's conclusion, that the conductivity of the slags decreases with increasing content of FeO, is erroneous due to the method of plotting the data. Thus, the results of other workers2,3,13,14 show that the conductivity of molten oxide slags increase with increasing temperature, indicating that the trend of the curve shown by the authors is due to the fact that the data for the slags containing relatively small amounts of FeO are at higher temperatures than those for the slags containing relatively large amounts of this oxide. In this connection the work of Wejnarth2 may be mentioned in which in an investigation of a series of iron silicate slags, the conductivity was found to increase with increasing content of FeO; the fact that the author's slags contained TiO2 probably does not affect the issue since it has been shown15,16 that, at least as far as conductivity is concerned, this oxide behaves essentially the same as silica and that mixtures of the oxide with silica have a very low conductivity of the order of 10-4 mhos at 1750°C. In connection with the experimental technique it may be noted that bubbles of carbon monoxide would probably be produced at the surface of the graphite electrodes in contact with the melts thus rendering the accuracy of the measurements somewhat open to question. J. L. Wyatt (author's reply)—Dr. Tomlinson makes reference to works by Martin and Derge, which indicate that slag systems containing no TiO2 are charac-terized by an increase in conductivity with an increase in temperature. Further, I have cited his examples, which indicate a drastic increase with small temperature change. The results of Dr. Derge's work have no bearing whatsoever on the results of this paper, since the slags under study here contained up to 70 pct TiO2. One cannot generalize on slag systems as a whole on the basis of any one family, for there are definite compounds of ionic nature formed in each system, and the ionic mobilization of these is something that cannot be determined without actual experimentation. Dr. Tomlinson makes reference to an unpublished work which, he claims, shows that titanium dioxide behaves the same as silica in regard to conductivity. Since I have not had 'an opportunity to see the paper I cannot make any comments, but unless the same slag system was studied there can be no specific comparison of results. If the decrease in conductivity of the slag was due entirely to temperature phenomena, as Dr. Tomlinson indicates, then one is without an explanation of the values shown in the paper for slags containing from 10 to 20 pct FeO. I cannot agree that the deviation in findings was appreciably related to temperature change; further, I believe this point was completely covered in the paper. STANDARD raises at Homestake are 150 ft long. Raises of more than 150 ft, driven with the use of a cage and hoist, are considered long raises- some have been driven more than 900 ft. Long raises have eliminated the need for access drifts on each level when transfer and ventilation raises are driven. These timbered cage raises, 7x9 ft in cross section, include a rock compartment and a combination cage, pipe, and manway compartment. To prevent excessive weight on the timbers, 10x10-in. bearing beams are cemented into hitches cut in the rock at 150-ft intervals. The beams also hold back timber movement caused by daily drawing of rock through the rock compartment.

The method of treating hazards wherein value is decreased, is cited by R. D. Parks. Quite properly, the theory of probabilities is made use of when multiple hazards are under consideration. E. F. Fitzhugh, Jr. deals with the enhancement phase graphically and uses percentage of expectancy as derived by a study of conditions and the selection of a chance factor. It is believed that both of the authors referred to fully recognize the part which human judgment plays, and as coupled with experience, training, and the application of the theory of probabilities; in that respect the composer of this paper is in accord. Within the past year, the task of arriving at a mathematical method for handling the enhancement phase, and, additionally, coupling the negative and positive phases, was explored. In citing the hazard, or negative phase, reference is made to the text by Parks.

Hibbard, New York City (communication to the Secretary): The title of Mr. Sargent's paper is somewhat misleading, since the paper itself relates chiefly to various kinds of annealing and their effects, and in very small part only to heat-treatment proper. This term has a well-defined meaning in steel metallurgf, and always includes a rate of cooling faster than the material treated would have in the open air. In bringing about this accelerated rate of cooling, some medium other than air at rest is brought into contact with the heated steel. Usually a liquid (almost always either oil or water) is employed ; but for certain steels a blast of air, and for others an easily fusible or soft metal, such as led (either solid or melted), may be used. Heat-treatment usually includes also subsequent moderate heating, followed, it may be, with another accelerated cooling.

A capsule technique was successfully employed to investigate the effect of nickel on the activity of nitrogen in Fe-Ni-N austenite in the temperature range 600" to 1200°C. This technique consisted of equilibrating nitrogen among various Fe-Ni alloys within a sealed silica capsule. Nitrogen transfer among the specimens occurred by N, gas at 900°, lOOO? and 1200?C. Nitrogen gas pressures within the capsules were estimated to be as high as 22 atm. The activity coefficient of nitrogen, fN , in Fe-Ni-N austenite is adequately described by the linear interaction equation: log . wt pct Ni where the standard state is chosen such that fN = I as wt pct Napproaches zero in binary Fe-N. This relationship was determined over the temperature range 873" to 1473°K and for nickel contents of 0 to 35 wt pct. ALTHOUGH chemical thermodynamics of liquid iron alloys have been extensively studied, experimental data for the solid state are needed. These thermody-namic data will provide a basis for understanding phase transformations, precipitation reactions, metal-gas equilibria, and so forth. The interaction of sub-stitutional alloying elements with the interstitial elements is of particular interest. In this investigation the thermodynamic behavior of Fe-Ni-N austenite has been studied. The solubility of nitrogen gas in iron austenite is known to obey Sieverts&apos; law up to about 65 atm.1-6 In addition, the solubility of nitrogen in Fe-Ni austenite has been investigated5"8 using the classical method of equilibrating Fe-Ni alloys with nitrogen gas at 1 atm. A capsule technique similar to that used to study the activity of carbon in alloyed austeniteg&apos;&apos;&apos; was employed in the present work to determine the effect of nickel on the activity of nitrogen in Fe-Ni austenite over the temperature range 600" to 1200°C. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A series of Fe-Ni alloys up to 35 wt pct Ni was vacuum melted and cast into 1 by 3 by 6 in. ingots. Chemical analyses at the top and bottom of each ingot demonstrated that the ingots were homogeneous with respect to nickel content. The nickel contents are given in Table I. Additional chemical analyses showed that wt pct Si < 0.05, s < 0.01, C < 0.01, Al < 0.006, 0 < 0.004, Mn < 0.002, and P < 0.002. A 2 in. section of each ingot was cold rolled to 0.015 in. The material was then decarburized to a carbon content of less than 0.004 wt pct. A portion of the material of each nickel content was nitrided to various levels in a H2-NH3 gas atmosphere to provide a source of nitrogen during subsequent equilibration. The experimental technique consisted of equilibrating the series of Fe-Ni-N alloys in a partially evacuated sealed silica capsule at the temperature of interest. Both Vycor and quartz capsules were used. In general, the final equilibrium nitrogen content for each Fe-Ni alloy was approached from both higher and lower nitrogen levels. The criterion for establishing that equilibrium was attained was that the final nitrogen content for each Fe-Ni alloy was the same irrespective of the initial level. A schematic drawing of the sample configuration in a capsule is shown in Fig. 1. The samples were arranged so that there was a minimum of physical contact. The samples were also dusted with a fine, high purity alumina powder to help prevent sticking. Several different types of furnaces were used in this study. In each case, a thermocouple was placed immediately adjacent to the capsule during equilibration and the temperature was controlled to within *4?C of that reported. At each equilibration temperature, the following times were found to be more than sufficient to attain equilibrium: 600°C-250 hr, 900°C-150 hr, 1000°C-150 hr, and 1200°C-50 hr. After equilibration the capsules were quenched in water and the nitrogen contents of the specimens determined by a Strohlein analyzer. Analyses of samples after equilibration at 1000" and 1200°C showed no silicon pickup from the silica capsules. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Transfer Mechanism. The mechanism by which nitrogen was transferred among specimens in an initially hydrogen flushed and partially evacuated capsule equilibrated at 1000°C was investigated. Fred D. DeVaney (Magnetic Roasting of Iron Ores, P. 1219) has presented several other AIME papers, all of them concerned with grinding and concentrating problems. He is chief metallurgist, Pickands Mather & Co., at Hibbing Minn., after working for the U. S. Bureau of Mines at Tuscaloosa, Ala., and Rolla, Mo., as a junior metallurgist and a metallurgist. DeVaney started as a research metallurgist with Pickands Mather in 1942. He set up the first laboratory in the Lake Superior district devoted to taconite concentra¬ [ ] tion, his major interest. He has been an AIME member since 1923, holding various offices, including the first presidency of the Minnesota Section. DeVaney has a Bachelor&apos;s in Mining, and Master of Science earned at the University of Alabama in 1924. He is a member of the Engineers Club of Northern Minnesota and plays golf for relaxation and enjoyment.

THE presence of an excessive amount of tough froth in the flotation of minerals, particularly coals, may create trouble in dewatering, filtering, and handling. Froth is also a nuisance in many chemical industries.&apos; This paper presents a study on the destruction of extremely tough froths with intense high-frequency sound. The data indicate that sound waves can be employed for continuous atandsoundwavescan instantaneous defrothing. A powerful high-frequency siren was used in obtaining the data. Also tested was an ultrasonorator of the crystal type with a frequency range of 400, 700, 1000, and 1500 kc per sec and a maximum power output from its amplifier of 198 w. The results, not presented, indicate that as now designed this machine is not suitable for defrothing. Although the sound generators of the magnetostriction type2,3 and of the electromagnetic type&apos;.&apos; were not available, it is beelectromagneticlieved they are capable of producing the required sound intensity for defrothing. The use of ultrasonics for defrothing was suggested by Ross and McBain1 in 1944. Ramsey8 reported in 1948 that E. H. Rose mentioned a supersonic device that broke down flotation froth but with low capacity. The writer has not been able to find any published literature containing practical experiments. Theoretical Considerations The mechanism of defrothing by sound is attributed to the periodically collapsing force of the propagated sound waves and the induced resonant vibration of the bubbles. The collapse of froth is further facilitated by the sonic wind and the heat of the siren. Sound waves can exert a radiation pressure&apos;," against any obstacle upon which they impinge. When a froth surface is subjected to the periodic puncturing of sound waves, the bubbles are broken. According to Rayleigh9 and Bergmann,12 the radiation pressure of sound, P, in dynes per sq cm is given as: P = 1/2 (r+1)i/v where r is the ratio of the specific heats of the medium through which sound is traveling and is equal to 1 on the basis of Boyle&apos;s law; i is the sound intensity in ergs per sec per sq cm, and v is the sound velocity in cm per sec. In this case, the accuracy of the formula is only approximate, because a perfect reflection can hardly result from a column of froth. In addition to the radiation pressure, the propagated sound waves cause the bubbles of the froth to have a resonant vibration.&apos;" he vibratory motion of the bubbles causes collision and coalescence, thereby weakening if not breaking the bubble walls. Sonic wind and heat were also generated." The sonic wind can exert pressure on the froth surface, and the heat can evaporate the moisture content of the bubble walls as well as expand the enclosed air. Apparatus The defrothing apparatus, shown in Figs. 1 and 2, consists of a powerful high-frequency siren, a glass or stainless steel beaker of 2-liter capacity with 12.4 cm diam and 17.1 cm height, and a metal reflector. The beaker was placed 2 in. above the top point of the siren. The metal reflector was adjusted to reflect and focus the generated sound waves into the central part of the beaker. Fig. 2 shows the crystal probe microphone used to measure the acoustic intensity and the mandler bacteriological filter employed to introduce compressed air into the beaker for frothing. The apparatus was enclosed in a soundproof cabinet equipped with a glass window. The siren, shown in Fig. 3, consists of a rotor that interrupts the flow of air through the orifices in a stator. The rotor, a 6-in. diam disk with 100 equally spaced slots, is driven by a 2/3 hp, Dumore W2 motor at 133 rps. The frequency of the siren can be varied from 3 to 34 kc. The maximum chamber pressure is about 2 atm, yielding acoustic outputs of approximately 2 kw at an efficiency of about 20 pct. The siren itself is relatively small and can be operated in any orientation. A detailed description of the siren has been given by Allen and Rudnick.11 Collapse of Froth To study the sequence of the collapse of froth, the glass beaker was partially filled with 920 cc water, 100 g of —150 mesh bituminous coal, 0.3 cc petroleum light oil, 0.2 cc pine oil and 1.54 cc Pyrene foam compound. This mineral pulp was agitated for 5 min and then aerated through a mandler filter until the empty space of the beaker, approximately 9 cm high, was filled completely with min-

T. H. Alden and R. L. Fleischer (General Electric Research Laboratory)— The authors&apos; results indicate clearly and, we believe, significantly that during tensile deformation the surface layers of an aluminum crystal are hardened more severely than the interior of the crystal. A probable explanation of this effect, as the authors indicate, is that dislocations in the primary slip system may be obstructed at the surface or, it should be added, near the surface. The intent of this discussion is to show that the oxide film on aluminum is not likely to be responsible for this effect, but that the results can be understood if it is assumed the secondary slip is more active in the surface layers than in the interior. Prior study has shown that the principal mechanical effect of an oxide film on a single crystal is to raise the yield stress while leaving the rate of strain hardening during the initial deformation relatively unaffected.33 Since the yield stress is unchanged during polishing in the present case, we conclude that continual removal of the oxide film exerts a small effect on the plastic hardening.* It appears that the hardening interactions are occurring not only at the immediate surface, but to an appreciable depth below it, although with decreasing severity. For example, Kramer and Demer found that with removal of 0.004 in. from a specimen, the easy glide region was extended somewhat; but the yield stress did not decrease. The initial yield stress was recovered only after 0.041 in. was removed. Since a very brief polish would permit dislocations trapped behind a surface film to run out,34 extra dislocations must, instead, be trapped to a considerable depth below the surface. The same conclusion is drawn from the observation of decreasing hardening slope with increasing surface removal rates. If the hardening interactions were only at the immediate surface, a full softening effect would be observed at some small removal rate. The view is taken here that strain hardening is principally caused by small amounts of secondary slip.35 The secondary dislocations will interact in various ways with the primaries, interfering with their motion and causing them to accumulate in the crystal. Prior studies of easy glide have shown Diehl&apos;s model of hardening to be qualitatively consistent with the effects of impurities,36 of temperature,36 and of crystal size.37 On this basis the enhanced hardening of the surface layers in aluminum arises from increased secondary slip at and to some depth below the surface. Selective removal of this hardened layer is expected to decrease the measurable "bulk" hardening, the effect increasing with the removal rate and decreasing with the applied strain rate. We suggest that the stress on secondary systems is raised by the bending moments arising from interactions with the grips during the deformation. This stress from the grips has been shown to be a maximum37 near the surface, and hence, increased secondary slip should result. Prior investigations of grip effect:; indicate that as the grip stresses are raised by changing the crystal shape, the easy glide slope increases while the extent of easy glide decreases.38-40 It has been shown also that bending moments superimposed during tensile testing may either decrease easy glide, when supporting the moments caused by gripping, or increase it, when cancelling the gripping moments.38 This interpretation of the authors&apos; results, emphasizing the special importance of secondary slip near the surface, is also consistent with the earlier results of Rosi.41 Copper crystals alloyed with silver in the surface layer show greatly increased easy glide compared with pure copper. In addition, the easy glide slope is reduced. The effect of bulk alloying in extending easy glide has been well established and has been interpreted as indicating the relative difficulty of secondary slip in alloy crystals. Since non-basal glide is difficult in zinc crystals, the effects of surface removal during deformation may be less important. Experiments to test this idea are in progress. I. R. Kramer and L. J. Our interpretation of the data in the paper is that dislocation motion is obstructed by "debris" which starts to form at the surface and extends towards the interior of the crystal with further plastic deformation. The fact that we did not find a reversion from Stage II to Stage I by surface removal shows that in Stage II the "debris" fills the entire cross-section of the specimen. Drs. Estimated reserves of high-grade iron ore at Serra dos Carajás total 16 billion metric tons and have an average grade of 66.7 per cent iron, 2.2 per cent combined silica and alumina, and 0.05 per cent phosphorous on a dry basis. Hematite is predominant and no significant sulfur on other deleterious elements are present. Serra dos Carajás is located in northern Brazil, about 550 kilometers southwest of Belém, Pará. It is six degrees south of the equator between the Xingu and Tocantins Rivers. Both rivers flow northward toward the Amazon River. The greater part of the area is covered by thick jungle, and the most practical means of access is by air.

Johnson, who presented his illustrated paper on "Prospecting for Iron Ore in New Jersey in 1943." This "wartime" brief was discussed by Lucien Eaton, P. W. Henry, and Chairman Crockett. H. E. C. E. SIMS*—This is a most interesting and important paper. It is important from two standpoints. First, it has as-spects of being highly accurate and therefore extremely useful to the operating man in showing how far he can go in oxidizing carbon from a steel bath while retaining chromium and the effect of temperature on this limit. Fig 5 is undoubtedly the highlight of the paper, and in checking it against available data, it seems capable of predicting actual results. The other important aspect is the apparently significant fact that reactions within a steel bath, such as between carbon and an oxide, are homogeneous reactions which do not require equilibrium with an external phase. In this case, it seems obvious that the reaction and the equilibrium established were between dissolved carbon (or carbide) and dissolved CrO. The classic reaction which requires equilibrium with solid Cr2O3, did not fit the data. It was recognition of this principle that made Fig 5 possible. G. R. FITTERER*—It might be in assuming the CrO is dissolved in the metal that you are actually approaching the correct factor for activity. If that is true and if the percentages that were used represent an equilibrium constant, this would mean, in effect, that the minimum temperature at which chromium would be reduced by an equivalent percentage of carbon would be about 2400°F from your equation. I believe that is in line with my experience particularly if you deal only with low percentages. J. CHIPMAN†—The author in discussing the equilibrium of the reaction offers two choices of explanation. One postulates an effect of chromium on the activity coefficient of carbon; it would require perhaps more data than are available to us at the present time to test this thoroughly. The other postulate which he offers is a reaction with CrO. This explanation is consistent with physical and chemical principles provided that a solid phase CrO is present, and that is essentially what he is postulating. If that oxide were present one would expect and, I think, almost require the kind of results that he obtained. The weakness of that postulate lies in the lack of confirmatory evidence regarding the presence of solid CrO as such. This should offer an interesting subject for further study. It seems a pity that the theoretical arguments revolving around CrO should have obscured for a moment the very real excellence of this paper. E. CARTER*—I think there is a problem that presents itself in practical application where the metal temperature is from 3200 to 3300 and the temperature desired in pouring is considerably less. B. M. LARSEN†—I get the impression from some of the work that was done earlier that there is probably a localized zone of high temperature at the slag metal interface which effects the removal of the carbon.
