DISCUSSION OF RESULTS The qualitative correlation between low-temperature ductility and prior high-temperature creep strain in nickel obtained in this investigation confirms the result obtained on high-purity brass by Chen and Machlin. However, the quantitative effect is much smaller in nickel. Comparison can be made on the basis of a prior high-temperature strain that is a certain percentage of the total high-temperature elongation to rupture. In the research of Chen and machlin, the prior high-temperature strain of 1/2 pct equaled 8.5 pct of the total high-temperature elongation at rupture. For nickel, in our experiments, 8.5 pct of 21.2 pct equals 1.8 pct. For eh = 1.8 pct, the loss in ductility in percent equals x 100 = b.5 pct. Schmatz IRON-aluminum alloys have gained much interest in the past few years for use as a base material for elevated-temperature alloys because of their excel- high-temperature strain the loss in low-temperature ductility is 8.5 pct for nickel as compared to 60 pct for pure a, brass. It is also interesting to note the observation that in nickel the low-temperature fractures, even at the most extreme high-temperature pre-strain, were partly trans crystalline and partly intercrystalline. In the case of a brass, these fractures were completely intercrystalline. According to the data on the percent of the grain boundary area that is cracked, at 22 pct high-temperature elongation, about 12.5 pct of the grain boundary area does not carry load. Thus, the inter-crack areas are carrying a stress that is about 11 pct higher than the nominal stress. A simple model predicts that the overall elongation, which is primarily the elongation in the bulk of the specimen, will correspond to the nominal stress when the stress in the intercrack area equals the tensile strength. Quantitatively this model predicts the equation The form of this equation will agree with that found if the strain-hardening exponent, n, equals unity. Actually this model is too gross an approximation to yield good quantitative results. The question naturally arises as to whether in ordinary hot-working, such as hot-rolling, intercrys-talline cracks are introduced that affect the low-temperature properties. It appears that the answer is that such a possibility cannot be overlooked, if the hot-working induces tensile stresses at temperatures above the equicohesive temperature and if the material tends to be notch sensitive at low temperature. Dimension stone is a term applied to stone sold in blocks or slabs of specified shapes and usually of specified sizes, contrasted with crushed, broken and pulverized stone covered in another chapter. Dimension stone includes cut stone, rough building stone, ashlar,* rubble, monumental stone, paving blocks, curbing, flagging, and many types of ornaments and novelties carved from stone. Riprap-large, irregular blocks used for shore protection-is classed with crushed and broken stone. Composition, Varieties, and Properties Dimension stones are of many kinds. The principal varieties are granites, trap rock (diabase, basalt, and gabbro), sandstone, limestone, and marble. Slate is covered in a separate chapter. Granite is a visibly granular crystalline rock consisting essentially of feldspar, quartz, and mica or hornblende. The basaltic rocks are darker in color than the granites. They contain little or no quartz and consist largely of plagioclase feldspar, augite, pyroxene, and hornblende. They are classed commercially as black granites. Limestone consists essentially of calcium carbonate. Dolomites and magnesian limestones used as dimension stone are classed with the high-calcium limestones. Marble is a crystalline form of limestone, but in the trade, any carbonate rock which will take a polish is called a marble. Many limestones which are fossiliferous but which will take a polish are sold as a decorative stone for lobbies of hotels and office buildings. Sandstone consists essentially of silica in the form of sand grains cemented into a coherent mass. Although rock occurrences are numerous and widespread, the exacting requirements of use condemn all but a small fraction of them for commercial use as dimension stone. No deposit that has closely spaced joints or planes of weakness can be used because sound blocks of moderate to large size are demanded. Uniform texture and grain size, constant and attractive colors or color pattern, and freedom from impurities that may cause stains or deterioration usually are demanded. Hardness is a variable property. Granites and diabases are as hard as or harder than steel, while limestones and marbles may be scratched with a knife. The hardness of sandstone depends upon the degree of cohesion of the grains. Workability depends to a considerable extent on hardness, but the degree of hardness has little influence on use except where stones are subjected to abrasion as on steps or floors. "Texture" as applied to stone relates to the arrangement, uniformity, and size of the constituent grains. Stones are of many colors and thus can satisfy a variety of tastes. For monumental stone, a marked contrast between polished and tooled surfaces is preferred in order that inscriptions may be read easily. Strength requirements usually may be disregarded because any sound structural stone suitable in other respects is almost invariably many times as strong as would be required for any ordinary use. The pressure on the base course of the Washington Monument, Washington, D. C., is less than 700 psi, and highgrade granites, limestones, sandstones, and marbles will sustain a crushing load of 10,000 to 25,000 psi. The world appetite for minerals in the, third quarter of this century grew at a higher rate than had been anticipated. To illustrate, consider the experience of four, commodities. Excluding the Communist bloc, sometimes referred to as the centrally planned economies, demand for aluminum increased at a compound rate of 8.6% between 1950 and 1975,; copper rose by 4.4%; iron ore by 5.5%; and tin, the laggard in the group, by 2%. Except for tin, the figures are substantially greater than growth rates anticipated in 1950 in the Paley Commission report and other studies. The growth rate was not evenly distributed in geographical areas. Professor Wilfred Malenbaum of the University of Pennsylvania did an interesting study breaking these figures down as among three principal sources of demand -- the United States, other industrialized nations (which he referred to as the "rich lands"), and the developing world (which he referred to as the "poor lands").

THIS paper will not be a technical paper, because, although I have been in. the business of mining and selling coal for 30 odd years, I am neither a mining engineer nor a practical miner. If I digress from time to time from my thesis, I must be forgiven by the expert engineers and highly technical gentlemen for whose proceedings this article is written. Waste of the wonderful store of power that the Creator placed at our disposal appears to have been the theory and the basis of our methods of extracting this power-waste from the time the coal is mined to the time it is consumed. Let us consider the prime causes of this wastage which has been the heritage of the coal mining industry. In the early days-about 150 years after "Stone Cole" was discovered in Illinois by Joliet and Marquette, and Father Hennepin noted a, "sole" mine on his map-the mode of mining prevalent among farmer land-owners, on whose property coal was discovered near the surface or outcropping on the hillsides, was to enter the seam by a shallow shaft or drift into the hillside and remove the coal by wedging it down until a large room was left. The roof without support would fall and our primitive coal operator would then sink another shaft or drive another drift. In these early operations only the large lumps were taken and all small pieces and screenings were left to be covered by the fall of the roof-in fact this condition prevailed in Illinois up to about 1885. Gradually the method of mining changed from the open chamber, to a single entry with rooms turned to the right and left. Later, as the demand for coal increased and the necessity for larger mines became evident, the "room and pillar" system grew to be regular practice.

First, the reasons why only silicon and sulphur were specified and not phosphorus, manganese and carbon; and second, why but little was said concerning the presence of iron oxide in the material.

MEASUREMENT of zeta potentials is a useful tool to study the surface chemistry of minerals under flotation conditions.1,2 Because there is continued interest in this approach, the apparatus for obtaining zeta potentials of nonconducting solids by the streaming potential method is outlined here. Fig. 1 illustrates the streaming potential apparatus." The streaming potential cell or plug consists of two 24/40 standard ground joints (4) joined with a piece of pyrex tubing 60 mm long and 12 mm in diam (5). The electrodes are made of bright platinum disks 19 mm in diam and 1 mm thick through which 0.5-mm holes have been drilled (6). To the surface of each is welded a piece of 80-mesh platinum gauze. Each electrode is permanently mounted on the ends of the inner parts of the two standard joints by means of a platinum wire (7) which connects it to the tungsten seal at the end of the cell (8). For ease in cleaning and handling the apparatus, the streaming cell is fastened to the 500-ml reservoir flasks (1) by means of two 18/9 ball and socket joints (2). This particular arrangement permits passage of the solution in either direction through the plug of particles. Flow of solution can be stopped by a stopcock (3). One of the reservoir flasks has a large opening to permit insertion of either a thermometer or a pair of electrodes for measuring pH of solutions within the system. In making the experiments, the plug is filled with 48 to 65-mesh particles, but a layer of 28 to 35-mesh particles is placed at each electrode to prevent any of the finer particles from passing through holes in the electrodes. The assembled apparatus is shown schematically in Fig. 2. To eliminate CO2 from the solutions, all experiments are conducted in a nitrogen atmosphere. Nitrogen, used to drive solutions through the plug, is passed through a bottle of concentrated KOH solution to remove CO2 (9). A 9-liter ballast reservoir (10) is used to maintain a more nearly uniform pressure. A series of stopcocks controls the direction of flow nitrogen to the flasks (11). Tubes of as-carite prevent backflow of CO2 into the system (12). Driving pressure, which can be set at any desired value, is measured with either a water manometer (13) or a mercury manometer (14). Reservoir flasks have side arms for making pressure corrections for the difference in water levels in the flasks. Streaming potentials are measured by the circuit illustrated in Fig. 2. The electrodes from the plug are connected through mercury wells (15) to a reversing switch (16), which reverses the polarity of the electrodes depending on the direction of flow of solution through the plug. The streaming potential is measured with a Leeds and Northrup type K2 potentiometer (17). Proper choice of null instrument is important because Eq. 1 assumes that the current which escapes through the measuring instruments is negligible. The medal was presented at a meeting of the New York Section of the Society on Jan. 18, at the Chemists' Club. Mr. F. A. J. Fitzgerald, Past President of the American Electrochemical Society; described the work of Mr. Rossi, while the presentation address was delivered by William H. Nichols, Past President of the Society of Chemical Industry.

The present study investigated the extraction of uranium from a low-grade ore by sulfuric acid and the removal of radium from the leach residues by brine solutions. The optimum leaching conditions were found to be 1.5 mole [£]-1 H2SO4, 6.Og[9]-1NaClO3, 75°C,50% pulp density and 750 rpm with respect to the rate of uranium extraction. The maximum theoretical attainable rate of uranium extraction was determined to be V = 1.09 x 10 -2 mole [¢]-1h-1 with respect to pulp density. The order of reaction was found to be zero regarding the effect of sodium chlorate concentrations. The apparent activation energy of uranium extraction was calculated from the Arrhenius plot to be [A]E a - 2.36 kcal mole-1 (9.87 kJ mole-1). Based on a statistical design, an empirical equation has been developed describing the rate of uranium extraction with the leaching parameters. This equation can be used to generate data which may be useful for scaling up the process to pilot plant level. The most efficient brine solution for the extraction of radium - 226 from the leach residue was found to contain one mole[f] -1 CaCl2 and 0.01 mole [2] -1 HC1. The two step leaching with this solution resulted 87% removal of radium from the leach residue. On the basis of this study, a flow-sheet has been proposed for the extraction of uranium and radionuclides from the ore and leach residue to yield almost innocuous tailings.

Having brought with me to this meeting a couple of "Mitis'' wrought-iron castings, I have found that they attracted a great deal of attention from steel manufacturers, and especially from those experienced in making castings, among whom some have said that they felt inclined to "unhesitatingly dcclare their manufacture an impossibility," if they had not seen the samples. The consequent demand for explanation of the method of manufacture has been SO great that I accept with pleasure the request by the President to address the meeting on the subject. My object in this address shall be only to explain the main features of the manufacture, referring those who take more interest in the matter to Mr. Th. Nordenfelt's paper, read before the British Iron and Steel Institute, reprinted in many American papers, and containing both a historical sketch of the inventions and many interesting details. As the manufacture of castings from steel by others is, at least to some extent, a success, I shall, in my explanations hereafter, refer to wronght-iron, although our mode of manufacture is equally applicable, with corresponding advantage, to steel of any temper. The successful manufacture of castings depends upon several very important matters, besides the necessary skill of the workman. You must have a suitable metal as raw material; you must have an eacient and suitable furnace for smelting, so as not to injure the metal; you must be able to handle the metal in a suitable way, from the time it is ready in the furnace until it is poured into the moulds; you must have a suitable moulding material. PENNSYLVANIA ANTHRACITE LOCAL SECTION On Saturday evening, Jan. 31, 1914, about 40 members of the Institute met at the Hotel Sterling, Wilkes Barre, Pa., for the purpose of discussing plans for the formation of a local section in the Pennsylvania anthracite region. President Rand; Prof. Joseph W. Richards, of the Board of Directors; Dr. H. M. Chance, Chairman of the Committee on Coal and Coke, and Secretary Stoughton were among the guests present. R. V. Norris acted as Master of Ceremonies, and the arrangements were all made in advance by a Committee under the leadership of Charles Enzian, to whom an enthusiastic vote of thanks was accorded at the dinner. An address was made by President Rand, followed by .Professor Richards, who outlined the procedure necessary for the formation of a Local Section. Addresses were then made by W. J. Richards, F. W. Chase,. C. F. Huber, R. J. Foster, F. A. Hill, H. M. Chance, Bradley Stoughton, and others, after which a rising vote was taken, and it was unanimously decided to petition the Board of. Directors for the establishment of the Pennsylvania -Anthracite Local Section. More than the required number of members then signed -the petition, and President Rand announced the appointment of a Committee to organize the Section and arrange for a meeting in accordance with their By-Laws, consisting of R. V. Norris, W. J. Richards, R. J. Foster, Edwin Ludlow, C. F. Huber, Charles Enzian, Douglas Bunting, F. A. Hill, and J. M. Humphrey.

CHANGES in industrial practice, in plant design, and in research methods which are so clearly to be seen on every hand, have affected the mineral industry as well as others. In particular, ore dressing has passed through a revolution in practice brought about by the introduction of flotation and other quasi-chemical methods, until it has ceased to be solely the mechanical preparation of ores. In fact, the term "ore dressing" itself is obsolescent, and "mineral dressing" has been growing in popularity. This assures adequate recognition of the fact that mineral substances other than ores, e.g. coals, clays, and cement rock, are treated by the same general methods. As a result of these industrial changes it was felt that a complete rearrangement of the curriculum and laboratories at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology would be ad-vantageous. Such a rearrangement would allow instruction and research to proceed in wider accord with industrial evolution and the needs of our times.

IN AN ARTICLE on "Recovering Smelter Dust and Oxide," published in the Engineering and Mining Journal (Vol. 131, No. 2), the authors briefly described some dust-recovery equipment and its operation at a secondary-metals brass-smelting and refining plant. A description of our experience in overcoming certain operating difficulties may prove of interest or value to those who are confronted with some of the same problems or who should equip their furnaces with dust-collecting equipment. The dust loss from reverberatory smelting and refining of brass con¬sists largely of zinc, with smaller percentages of lead, tin, and copper in the order named. At the Kramer plant, the fume discharge from the two stacks amounted to 3 to 4 tons of solids per day, making a dense smoke. With dust equipment in operation, the discharge from the stacks is invisible and approximately 2500 lb. of zinc and other metals is recovered daily thereby from each furnace operating.

Close examination of most so-called n.eu processes in mineral dressing reveals that they were conceived and developed a long time ago. High-intensity magnetic separation is no exception. Although its application in iron ore beneficiation seems new, in Germany the process has been commercially successful for almost two decades. High-intensity separators have long been standard equipment in the glass sand industry; they have also been used in concentrating some of the more unusual para-magnetic minerals. The basic features of an induced-rotor, high-intensity magnetic separator were described by Desire Korda in Paris in 1905,' and many patents have since been issued for improvements on the original design. Fig. 1 shows the basic design of an induced-rotor separator. Several U. S. manufacturers have been supplying induced-rotor separators for many years, but these are all devices of relatively low capacity, not suitable for treating such low-cost commodities as iron ore. On the other hand, two German manufacturers are offering induced-rotor separators of high capacity, both proven in the field. The present investigation was prompted by the apparent success of the German installations and by the discovery of iron ores on this continent which may be amenable to high-intensity separation. The objective was to gain better insight into the underlying principles of separation in a high-intensity field and to use this knowledge in selecting or designing an optimum separator. THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS he well known low-intensity magnetic separators are. without exception, of the the magnet type with more or less similar field shapes. It is therefore permissible to speak of their comparative strengths in terms of field intensity alone. However, proper understanding of the high-intensity magnetic separation process requires somewhat deeper analysis of the relationship between the magnetic field and the attractive force. Contrary to a widely held belief, a magnetic field of parallel lines of flux exerts no attractive force on a magnetically susceptible particle, but merely aligns its poles parallel to the lines of flux. On the other hand, a non-uniform field attracts a magnetically susceptible particle in the direction of the converging lines of flux. Thus the force of magnetic attraction varies as the product of the field intensity and the field gradient: dH ds As the induced-rotor magnetic separator is primarily intended for separating feebly magnetic materials, it is important that maximum attraction be attained. For the designer, then, the relationship between the magnetic field and the attractive force has the following implications: 1) Insofar as possible, the separation gap must be saturated with flux. 2) The rotor surface must be shaped to insure maximum convergence of lines of flux toward the rotor. 3) The primary pole face (opposite the rotor, on the other side of the separation gap) must be shaped so that the lines of flux do not diverge from it at any location in the effective separation zone. The actual attractive force of the rotor, and its critical speed, can be calculated as shown by Runo-linna, provided that the true flux density, the field gradient, and the magnetic susceptibility of the mineral can be measured with sufficient accuracy. The irregular shape of the rotor surface makes flux measurements difficult, but it can be done if a suitable gaussmeter is available (see Fig. 2). Calculations by the author, and comparisons with the centrifugal force exerted by the rotor, indicate that the force pinning a hematite particle to the rotor is of the same order of magnitude as the force holding a

(written discussion*).-The figures on costs given at the end of this paper. are of particular interest and it is unfortunate that they necessarily cover such limited periods, as figures giving the costs over a period of at least a year would be of much greater value; for instance, it seems hardly probable that the performances credited to the various shovels for the months for which the costs are given would represent the average of the performances of these machines over a longer period. It would seem to me that the maximum of 4000 cu. yd. (3058 cu. m.) per clay given for the 225 B shovel is much greater than could be maintained for an entire year's operation. On the other hand, the 1500-yd. figure for the 150 B shovel would seem a low average for this type of shovel. In connection with the drag-line excavators, it will be interesting to know that the Lehigh Coal, and Navigation Co. is about to install one of these machines on a clay stripping at their Nesquehoning colliery to excavate an average depth of. overburden of 65 ft. (19 m.), which, due to local conditions, will require that part of the excavated material be handled a second time and a lesser quantity a third time. The results of this operation will undoubtedly be watched with great interest.

The use of roll scale in the Bessemer process dates back, to the best of our knowledge, at least 20 years. It was first used by the Ohio Steel Go., Youngstown, Ohio (now the Ohio Works of the Carnegie Steel Co.) under the direction of Sam McDonald, Superintendent of the Bessemer Department at these works. Two 10-ton vessels and one blowing engine capable of blowing one heat at a time were employed. The object of using the scale was to shorten the length of the blow, or in other words, to increase the production with the same equipment. Various means were tried out for introducing the roll scale into the bath of molten iron: It was shoveled into the vessel before the heat was charged, so that the metal would flow over the scale; it was shoveled into the bath after the vessel was turned up; it was dumped into the empty iron ladle by the wheelbarrow-load, and at times was dumped on top of the molten metal in the iron ladle. But the practice of introducing the scale into the iron ladle had to be abandoned on account of danger from explosions and of skulling the ladles. It was soon learned that the proper place to charge the scale was in the empty vessel, so that when the molten iron was poured into the vessel it flowed over the scale, causing a considerabIe reaction to take place before the heat was turned up. Eventually, cylindrical chutes similar to those now in use were installed. Into these chutes the scale is dumped and carried into the empty vessel. Before this convenient means of introducing the scale was adopted, the Ohio Works had satisfactorily demonstrated that roll scale would increase production, by blowing 107 heats in one 12-hr. turn (1,087 tons) with one blowing engine, blowing one heat at a time; whereas, prior to the use of scale, the best practice at these works was about 80 heats under the same conditions. In using roll scale and other oxides of iron to facilitate and control the refining of pig iron in the converter, the Bessemer plant has borrowed one of the most active agencies used in the open-hearth process with, as would be expected, much the same results. The effect of such additions to the Bessemer charge may be discussed as to the influence of this practice on quality, production and cost.

GEOPHYSICAL methods as described in technical articles generally fail to answer the questions of prospectors and geologists as to which method they should apply and what information they may expect from their application. This article is an attempt to discuss the use of electrical methods with special reference to the prospecting for orebodies and the map¬ping of geologic structure. Especially on virgin ground, geological reconnaissance should precede electrical prospecting, with the object of outlining carefully the orebearing rock and determining the possibilities of elec¬trical prospecting. No electrical survey will then be carried out on ground which, for geological reasons, may be considered barren or where the electrical meth¬ods are inapplicable. As the success of electrical prospecting depends on the difference in conductivity between the ore and the country rock within which the orebody is inclosed, the conductivity of the two should be considered and de¬termined, if possible. The conductivity of an orebody depends on the distribution of conductive ore minerals and, in addition, on its size (length, width and depth). Most minerals with metallic luster show good electrical conductivity; for instance, the sulfides. Zinc-blende is an exception, but as it is often associated with the ore minerals of good conductivity (for instance, pyrite or galena), there is likelihood also of finding zinc.

IN the long list of our illustrious and lamented dead, there are names which recall personality as well as career and achievement; social as well as scientific merit; devotion to the Institute itself as well as to some one of the professions which it represents. These men we remember because they did not forget us; besides our pride in their wider work and fame, we are proud of what they did with and through us; especially do we rejoice if our early recognition of them opened the way to a recognition by the world; and in their departure we claim to sorrow, not merely as members of an appreciative public, but also as. bereaved personal friends. In common with thousands, we regret our loss, but we do not regret only-we mourn and miss. To this group of those whose death has brought to us the double sense. of public and private grief belonged our strong, bright, dear brother, in whose memory this inadequate tribute is offered. Charles Benjamin Dudley was born July 14, 1842, at Oxford, Chenango county, N. Y. He came on both sides of New England blood, his father being from New Hampshire and his mother from Connecticut. The pumping operations at the Chief mine have been unique in the respect that for many years the entire flow of water into the mine has been disposed of by pumping into natural underground " caverns" or "sinks." Volumes up to 4000 gpm have been pumped into these caverns with no apparent tendency for the caverns to fill with water, and it has never been proven that any of the water returns to the mine workings. Major pumping operations have been carried on during two periods, the first from 1918 to 1927, and the second from 1942 to the present time.

HAVING suggested magmatic waters as the probable agents of vein- and ore-deposition in southeastern Alaska in a paper entitled, The Geology of the Treadwell Ore-Deposits,1 it is with particular interest that I note W. Lindgren's application of the hypothesis of igneous emanations to the gold-quartz veins of Victoria and of California.2 Mr. Lindgren says: "In the above paragraphs I have repeatedly called attention to remarkable similarities in vein-filling and metasomatic action between the Victorian quartz veins and those of Sierra Nevada. Another striking similarity is that in both of these regions the veins were formed just after the intrusions of vast masses of granite or dioritic magma into crumpled and compressed sediments. I am convinced that these similarities are due to closely similar modes of formation. With some confidence, I would formulate the hypothesis that the gold and the quartz in this type of veins have been deposited chiefly by `eruptive after-effects;' in other words, chiefly by hot ascending waters originally contained in the granitic magma and released from it by decreasing pressure, due to its eruption into the upper parts of the lithosphere. It is quite possible that atmospheric waters may have played a certain part by aiding the precipitation and by effecting certain forms of concentration in the deposits." There are many reasons for extending this hypothesis to southeastern Alaska. This region and the Sierra Nevada belt of California are undoubtedly parts of one geologic province, throughout which the main events of geologic time are evidenced by identical or closely similar records in the rocks. There have already been so many subjects of a purely mechanical nature presented to the Institute of Mining Engineers, that it is unnecessary for me to apologize for adding another to the list. When a new invention, or what is supposed to be a new invention, claiming simply an improvement on the well-known devices, is to be described, it is usual to point out the defects of the old and give a history of the object or the art up to date. But, as no doubt a large proportion of the members of this Institute know as much, or more, about the history and use of the steam-engine indicator than I do myself, I will not further preface the subject, than to remind you that what called for the Richards's improvement on the Watt's indicator was high speed; that the leading improvement was the reduction of momentum in the reciprocating parts; and that this was accomplished by making the parts lighter, and reducing the travel of the heaviest, of them, and consequently the speed and momentum. The use of the indicator has been extended, for the speed of steamengines and other prime movers has been increased, until one engineer at least, John Cooper, of Philadelphia, says, "I want an indicator that will work up to a thousand revolutions." .Mr. Thompson, of the Buckeye Steam-Engine Company, of Salem, Ohio, has improved on the Richards's indicator by another reduction in the momentum, which is done by putting the parallel motion nearer the fulcrum of the pencil arm, reducing both weight and travel. The characteristic feature of the indicator I am going to illustrate is a still further reduction in the same direction, which is accomplished by dispensing with the parallel motion altogether.
