Burr, Parral, Chihuahua, Mexico (communication to the Secretaryt): I regret that Mr. Norris did not give more attention to the hoisting of water in inclined shafts or slopes: the only slope mentioned being Hickory Ridge Slope, No. 4, of the Union Coal Co. The surface arrangement, illustrated in Fig. 12 of his paper, if not unpractical, is at least unscientific and cumbersome. It is my opinion that the back- and sideguides shown in Fig. 12 are not only unnecessary where rails are used as a track, but are unsafe, excepting in the case of a very firm hanging-wall, or roof, and sides of vein-matter, having absolutely no tendency, either to settle from the back, or to squeeze from the sides, an effect which would inevitably force the guides out of alignment. The accompanying illustration, Fig. 1, shows what I consider a better method of hoisting water than that described by Mr. Norris. This method is based on the general practice in metalliferous mines of the West, where skips are used in slopes; and, while it is not original with me, I have frequently used it with very satisfactory results for dumping both ore and water.

But I am quite certain that by this time even the most sanguine furnace managers must have become convinced, from the experience of the last year, that somewhere in their processes there are enormous losses. Rates for the purchase of ores in 1873 were not as high as they were in former years in certain parts of the country ; labor was no 'higher than formerly; the demand for unparted lead was good throughout the year, with the only exception of the time of the panic, in the fall of 1873; yet there are, of between 40 and 50 works, not more than two or three in Utah and Nevada to-day, that have paid a reasonable interest on the capital invested.

The work herein reported shows that galena in certain organic solutions of fatty acids becomes coated with lead soaps, and that this coating is not only highly water-repellent but is also repellent to certain organic liquids, particularly those of high surface tension; i.e., nitrobenzene, diphenylmethane. Wetting Properties of Galena in Nonaqueous Fatty Acid Solutions When a "captive bubble"I is withdrawn from a polished, plane galena surface under a nitrobenzene solution of stearic acid, the air bubble shows a decided tendency to "cling" to the mineral surface. The contact angle, therefore, was greater than zero, although it was not large enough to be measured quantitatively by the captive-bubble method." When pure nitrobenzene was substituted for the nitrobenzene-stearic acid solution, no clinging of the bubble was observed; viz., contact angle = zero. Although the contact angle developed in air-galena-nitrobenzene-fatty acid solution was small, the organic solvent repellency of the galena surface was great enough to enable good recovery in a laboratory flotation cell2 In Table I are given the results of flotation experiments using several different fatty acids dissolved in nitrobenzene.

I HAVE been introduced in the dual capacity of president of the Canadian Institute and Metals Controller for Canada. There are three particular points of similarity between these two positions. They are both temporary ; they both have to do with the mining industry ; and by a peculiar coincidence they both pay me exactly the same salary. It is difficult to appreciate the background of our present situation without knowing the really tremendous changes that have taken place since the last war. I sometimes think that even among ourselves we are likely to forget the extent to which our great mining industry has been expanded. In 1914 Canada's gold production amounted to only $16,000,000 and the suggestion was seriously ad¬vanced in Ottawa that the gold mines should be allowed to close down so that their men might be used in more important work. Today with a production at the rate of over $200,000,000 a year no one in Canada would venture such a suggestion because the output of our gold mines is the greatest single factor in producing dollar exchange, badly needed for the purchase of munitions and to maintain Canada's unbroken record of always meeting its obligations. Even with the severe restrictions now in effect against the importation of nonessentials, our imports for war purposes from the United States are resulting in the biggest adverse trade balance in our history. With us, gold mining ranks as an essential industry.

ONE of the chief concerns of the Bethlehem Steel Co. naturally is the proper functioning of its organization. This involves the training of a continuous supply of younger men to fill the vacancies caused not only by the inevitable departure of older men, but also by the growth of existing establishment, and by expansion in new directions. It does not oper-ate a student training course with a fixed time schedule or with definite periods of rotation through the differ-ent divisions. To state the case positively, the gradu-ate's training course must operate continuously from the beginning of his employment through a long term of years. No period of weeks or months nor pair of years suffice to bring him into contact with all the com-binations needed to qualify him for the larger destiny toward which we hope he is headed. Our first step in selecting a college man is to require that he have a degree. We thus approximate the assur-ance that at least four annual siftings have reduced the chance that a non-worker may find himself in a job where work is necessary. The next step is to try to ascertain facts, from the graduate and from others who have known him at his home and in 'his college, to indi-cate whether our opportunities offer him a career that will challenge his continuing interest, and hold him to tenacious effort against all happenings. We aim to avoid knowingly bringing into our organization a man who will not develop in it enough enthusiasm to keep him happily striving. Having made our selections, we assemble the gradu-ates into a probationary observation circuit. We-put ourselves under their observation by taking them in small groups, usually of two to four men, on a circuit of every part of the Bethlehem plant, in which every manufacturing principle of our steel business is ex-emplified. The probationers work at something from day to day, with their hands if it can be arranged; otherwise in questioning, examining, and note-taking. Their observations include talks with superintendents, foremen, and workmen, the conditions under which workmen labor, apparatus, machinery, methods, design and operation of plant.

The discovery of phosphorous is usually credited to the German alchemist Brand, in 1669, and the element was rediscovered the next year by Boyle in England. IT was more than 100 years later, however, before its presence was detected in high-carbon iron produced in early blast furnaces. In 1781 the German chemist Meyer published the results of his investigation on the ?white earth? that he had found in cast iron made from bog ores. This white earth was metallic in appearance, it was extremely brittle, it was readily fusible, and it was not attracted by magnet. Meyer noted that cast iron containing this white earth was more fusible than other cast iron, and he was sure that he had discovered a new metal ? for which he proposed the name Wassereisen, or the Latin term Hydrosiderum. Two years later the distinguished Swedish Chemist Bergmann made the same discovery, finding a ?white calx? in cast iron, which he also mistakenly considered to be a new metal, and for which he proposed the Siderum.

Several months ago, some specimens of the minerals occurring at the Etta tin mine, Dakota, were received at the laboratory of the Cornell University. On examining the heavy brownish-black portion, which I presumed was the tin-stone, I was surprised to find only a faint indication of tin. Further investigation showed the mineral to be tantalite. On searching carefully all the fragments received, a considerable quantity of that mineral was found, and only a single streak of cassiterite, which was attached to a mass of spodumene. DITHIOPHOSPHATES and xanthates are the principal collectors for sulphide minerals, and consequently any knowledge of mineral-collector systems of this type is of value. In the present investigation an attempt was made to obtain information on the interaction of a typical dithiophosphate with galena. In carrying out this study, radioiso-topes, so much discussed in the past few years,', ' were extensively employed. By using radioactive dithiophosphate synthesized from radioactive phosphorus, a rapid and sensitive analytical procedure G. L. This permitted determination of such important quantities as the rate of uptake of dithiophosphate by the mineral, the amount existing at equilibrium on the mineral surface and in the solution, and the desorption of the agent from the surface. Such measurements were possible even on single crystals of galena. In addition the exchange of dithiophosphate between the solution and the sorbed phase was examined, a matter which could be accomplished only by the use of isotopes. It is desired to point out at this time that throughout this paper the term "sorption" has been employed to designate the uptake of agent by mineral, without implication as to the nature of the process by which the uptake was accomplished. Experimental Materials: Galena: The galena was from the Tri-State district. For studies on ground mineral four preparations were used during the course of the investigation. These were prepared from selected large crystals by wet grinding in order to reduce surface oxidation. Alcohol was chosen as a convenient medium for this purpose. The ground mineral was then fractionated by sedimentation in alcohol, dried by evacuation, and stored in a nitrogen-filled desiccator. Data on the preparations are tabulated in table I. The size analysis indicated that the areas of the preparations were of comparable magnitude, even though the absolute values may be somewhat incorrect. Dithiophosphates: Nonradioactive dithiophbsphate (di-isopropyl or di-secondary butyl) was obtained by purification of a commercial product. An aqueous acid solution of the agent was extracted with petroleum ether, the ether layer dried, and the dithiophosphate precipitated as ammonium salt with anhydrous ammonia. Several repetitions of this process resulted in a nearly colorless, flaky product of good purity. (General formula (RO,)PSSNH,). Radioactive dithiophosphate was synthesized by heating radioactive elementary red phosphorus* • For early experiments (1943 to 1944), the elementary red phosphorus was obtained from the cyclotron group at the Crocker Radiation Laboratory of the University of California. Berkeley, through the courtesy of Dr. Joseph W. Hamilton. For more recent work (1946 to 1949). the elementary radioactive Phosphorus has been supplied by the Oak Ridge National Labarotories on allocation from the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission. with sulphur at 270" to 300°C to produce radioactive P,S,. The latter was then treated with the desired purified alcohol (isopropyl or secondary butyl) at 60" to 80°C to form the dithiophosphoric acid derivative. Purification was effected in the same manner as for the nonradioactive material. The effectiveness of the purification method was established by the isotopic dilution method." The same technique was used to show that only negligible decomposition of neutral or of carbonate solutions of the dithiophosphate took place over a period of a day; this was true whether or not galena was suspended in the solutions. Procedures: Radioactivity: The activity of a solution was obtained by counting with a small glass-jacketed, silvered Geiger counter, using a conventional scaling circuit.' Crystals and other solids were counted under a bell-shaped, mica-window counter tube. Sufficient counts were made so that the probable error of counting was of the order of +I-3 pct. THIS communication describes a series of experiments in which dislocation etch pitting was used to ascertain the depth of damage in crystals which were mechanically polished or which were cut with either a commercial metallographic cut-off wheel,* a com- All specimens were cut from single crystals of American Smelting and Refining Co. 99.999+ pct pure copper which were grown from the melt by the Bridge-man technique. The test specimens were disks, with faces being (111) planes and the disk axis a (111) direction. The disks were annealed in a vacuum of 10-5 Torr for 24 hr at 950°C prior to cutting or polishing and were given a light electropolishing in an ortho-phosphoric acid bath before etch pitting. Both Youngs1 and Livingston's2 reagents were used for etch pitting and the reagents gave identical quantitative results; however Livingston's reagent produced less staining and so all photomicrographs shown are of {111) surfaces etched with this solution. The surface of the annealed crystals showed well-defined subboundaries and a density of dislocations of about 1 X 106 per sq cm excluding those present in subboundaries, Fig. 1. The depth of cold work produced during mechanical polishing was determined after an annealed specimen was mounted in a paraffin holding block to protect it from extraneous damage. The exposed (111) surface was ground on metallographic papers and then polished on billiard cloth through 0.05-p alumina abrasive. It was necessary to remove about 0.3 mm (-0.01 in.) to obtain a structure representative of the annealed sur- face, indicating that the crystal was damaged to this depth during mechanical polishing. A technique has been developed for carrying out normal freezing experiments with a current density of 2000 amp per sq cut passing through the solid-liquid interface. The equation relating the effective distribution coefficient to the equilibrium distribution coefficient in electric field-aided solidification, originally developed by Huckc et al.,1 has been modified for the case of concentrated solutions. Preliminary experiments on the Sn-Bi system give qualitative agreement with the equation. The data are analyzed by a slightly novel use of the normal freeze equation which allows one to determine the effective distribution coefficient more easily. Very extensive mixing in the liquid was found at these high current densities and it is postulated that the mixing results from a vertical component of the magnetic Lorentz force generated by the electric current. In the search for techniques of obtaining ultrahigh-purity metals the inefficient but very effective technique of electrotransport has received little attention. Electrotransport is most effective in the liquid state and a natural application, therefore, is to apply an electric field across the liquid zone of a zone-melting experiment. The present investigation was undertaken to study the effect of an electric field upon solidification of metals, so that the usefulness of electrotransport in such solidification experiments as zone melting could be determined. In zone-melting and normal-freezing experiments it is difficult to achieve complete mixing in the liquid in the immediate vicinity of the solidifying interface. Consequently a solute build-up will occur at the interface in the portion of the liquid where complete mixing does not occur (an equilibrium distribution coefficient, ko, less than one, and unidirectional atom motion will be implied throughout). This local solute build-up produces a corresponding rise in the solute concentration in the solid so that the ratio of the solute concentration between the solid and the bulk liquid is larger than the equilibrium distribution coefficient. This ratio is defined as the effective distribution coefficient, k,. The differential equation describing the solidification process may be derived by applying the continuity equation to an expression for the net solute flux at the interface. The solution to this differential equation then allows one to determine the solute distribution in the liquid and the relationship between k0 and ke. One of the most useful solutions to this equation was first derived by Burton, Prim, and Slichter,' in which they assumed that a) the equilibrium distribution of solute was maintained on the plane of the interface, 11) the solute build-up ahead of the interface in the liquid disappeared at a distance 6 from the interface, and c) the solute distribution in the liquid was invariant with time. The following well-known relation between ko and ke was then obtained, where R is the rate of solidification and D the diffusion coefficient of the solute in the liquid. This equation appears to correlate the data from a number of different types of solidification experiments very well. Application of an electric field across the solid-liquid interface can produce an additional flow of solute atoms as a result of the electrotransport. When the polarity of the field is such as to direct the electrotransport flux away from the interface the solute build-up may be diminished, even to the point of producing a solute depletion and a consequent ke smaller than ko. The quantitative description of this process and the resulting form of Eq. [I] was first given by Hucke et al.1* and then inde- where E is the electric-field intensity and U is the differential mobility, i.e., the velocity of the solute atoms with respect to the solvent atoms per unit electric field. Both authors follow the method of Burton, Prim, and Slichter in their derivation, the only difference being the additional electrotransport term in the flux equation. It has been pointed out1,3 that Eq. [2] predicts the possibility of a noticeable increase in the purification of materials by solidification in an electric field. In the uniform of his country for the second time, Harry Phillip Stolz. Chairman of the A.I.M.E. Petroleum Division, holds a commission as Lieutenant-Commander in the Naval Reserve and is attached to the office of Inspector of Naval Petroleum Reserves in California. During World War I he left his studies at Stanford University to join the Army and was granted a commission as Second Lieutenant of Infantry. He remained in the Army Reserve until 1938 when he resigned to accept a commission as a member of the Naval Petroleum Reserves Advisory Board. Born in San Francisco Jan. 29,1899, where his father had lived since 1880, he was in that city during the turbulent year of 1906 where the city was ravaged by fire and earthquake.

As a result of past developments, mainly at universities, the coal industry has had access for a decade or more to a number of computer programs for coal mine planning. Using some of these programs Bethlehem Steel's Research Department in 1969 launched jointly with Bethlehem Mines Corporation an extensive research and development program aimed at: (1) testing the capabilities of these programs through trial applications as the need and opportunity existed, (2) defining what additional capabilities were required to make mine planning computer systems fully useful in the hands of Bethlehem's mine-planning engineers in the field, and (3) developing and implementing in the field the mine-planning systems agreed on. This program is now nearing completion, and several of Bethlehem's operations routinely use the planning tools that were developed. The progress of this research program is discussed in terms of our initial trial applications of computer methods to mine planning and the incorporation of several innovative features into our new set of computer programs, in particular, the use of time sharing, data base management systems, and general-purpose simulation languages.

Discussion of the paper of Blarney Stevens, presented at the Butte meeting, August, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 79, July, 1913, pp. 1285 to 1303. F. L. GRAMMER,Leesburg, Va. (communication to the Secretary*):¬ Mr. Stevens refers to an explanation of parallel jointing by W. 0. Crosby, which I noted when reading one of his excellent text books. It seemed to me earthquakes were not a satisfactory explanation, and I looked up several authorities; but I never realized how small the usual amplitudes were until Mr. Stevens presented his paper. Several letters to the U. S. Geodetic Survey showed me there were very few records of tidal movements of earth crust in the United States. Altitude and latitude would be influencing factors; but this diurnal movement must exceed earthquake amplitudes, besides being more nearly universal. My inquiries brought the answer that the major directions of jointing had not been extensively tabulated. If major directions of jointing were recorded-with notes as to angle with mountain chain, or North Star, and distance between joints, with nature of rock and maximum and minimum tidal up-heaval-some interesting relations might be made manifest.

Reports of committees were presented and acted upon as follows: ENGINEER ON INTERSTATE COMMERCE COMMISSION The second meeting of the Committee was. called because it was represented to the Committee' on Pro¬cedure that the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Association of Engineers, and the Ameri¬can Institute of Consulting Engineers were anxious to have President-elect Harding appoint an engineer to fill one of the vacancies on the Interstate Commerce Commission. The representative of The American Society of Civil Engineers agreed to endorse the recom¬mendations- of American Engineering Council, and the Committee on Procedure prepared and sent a letter to the President-elect, a - copy of this letter being sent to each member of the Board. No names were suggested. . The appointment of an engineer on the Interstate Commerce Commission was approved and the Board, after approving the action of the Committee 'on Procedure in writing the President-elect, voted that, if requested, the Committee on Procedure submit a list of not less than six names for the appointment of an engineer on the Interstate. Boliden Metall Aktiebolag, the prime base metal mining company of Sweden, treats some 10-10.9 t/y (11-12 stpy) of sulphide ore in nine concentrators. During the years considerable effort has been devoted to the development of all phases of the technology of ore prospecting, mining, milling, smelting and refining. This has been necessary due to the complex and low grade ores. The autogenous grinding technique was first studied within the company as early as 1945. Basic test work commenced during the early fifties, whereby the merits of pebble grinding could be evaluated. In parallel with the converting of the rod mill/ball mill grinding systems to rod mill/pebble mill systems, the development work concerning the feasibility of autogenous grinding went on resulting in the installation of a 8 6.7 x 2.1 m (8 22 x 7 ft.) cascade mill at the Vassbo lead mine in 1959. Long term tests at the Vassbo plant together with a number of pilot plant test involving low grade silicious ores and pyritic comples base metal ores successive led to a better understanding of the process of autogenous grinding. Before a two stage autogenous grinding system could be chosen for the expansion of the Aitik copper mine, a carefully planned survey concerning grinding characteristics and variances in the ore and flowsheet was undertaken. The expanded plant went on stream in 1972 and in the beginning of 1973 and since then has performed excellently.
