EVIDENCE has been accumulating in recent years, in part from the work of the Coal Research Laboratory, that coals belong to a family of natural polymers and that even in complex reactions the differences between coals are quantitative and not qualitative. This point of view leads to the expectation that if a series of coals were subjected to a closely controlled set of experimental conditions the results obtained should be related to the chemical analyses of the individual coals. The data accumulated over the past 10 years by the Bureau of Mines in its "Survey of Coke-, Gas-, and By-Product-Making Properties of American Coals," in what has come to be recognized as the Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association (BM-AGA) carbonization assay test,1-12 offer an unusual opportunity to check this conclusion. The present paper reports an analysis of the data on the first go coals and coal blends-including coals numbered I to 55b, inclusive -which have been carbonized according to a standard procedure at intervals of 100°C. from 500° to 1100° in either or both 13 or I8-in. cylindrical retorts." In Table I are given the name of the seam from which the sample was obtained, the analytical data used, and the reference to the original publication of the Bureau of Mines. The coals range in fixed carbon from 46.2 to 79.0 per cent, in volatile matter from 15.4 to 41.3 per cent, in ash; from 2.1 to 15.9 per cent, in moisture from o.8 to 19.7 per cent, and in total sulphur from 0.40 to 4.44 per cent; therefore the entire gamut of bituminous coals is represented. The petrographic nature of the individual coals is not considered in the following analysis, although both "normal" bright coals and splint coals are included in the samples studied. For information on the petrography of the coals and for further information characterizing the coals the original papers should be consulted. Although the coals that are included extend over the whole range of bituminous coals, they do not cover this range entirely adequately. In particular, only 13 of the go coals have moisture contents greater than 3 per cent. This concentration at low moisture values means that the effect of moisture, which is an important factor, cannot be determined with as much certainty as would be desirable. All the coals were not tested at every temperature and in both retort sizes. Only the first 30 coals were tested at 1100°, and only about 50 at the other temperatures, except at 900°, where nearly all of them were included. In the accompanying tables the actual number of observations entering into each correlation is given. In this study equations are given for calculating analyses, yields, and properties of coke and by-products from the coal analyses. To decide whether these equations are satisfactory it is necessary to know the accuracy with which these quantities were measured in the assay tests.

THE use of pyrophoric alloys in ignition devices dates back more than fifty years to a German patent granted to Carl Auer von Welsbach in 1903.' This patent named a composition essentially the same as that used in most present-day cigarette lighter "flints:" 70 pct mischmetal, 30 pct Fe, referred to here as "Auer alloy." Among the few current exceptions to this composition are those "flints" based on titanium or zirconium. The rare-earth metals of which mischmetal is composed are so similar chemically and physically remarkable similarity in their alloying behaviors would be expected. Comparison of the binary phase diagrams2 of these elements with nonrare-earth metals shows that this is true to a striking degree, so much so, in fact, that it appears that a mixture of these elements may be treated as a single component of alloys without fear of serious error. In considering alloys containing mischmetal, therefore, the mixture of rare-earth elements will be referred to merely as "cerium," the predominant element in mischmetal. In polishing cerium alloys for metallographic examination, it was soon discovered that aqueous polishing media were highly corrosive. Free cerium in the alloys acts similarly to calcium (though not quite so rapidly) in evolving bubbles of hydrogen at the metal-water interface; thus, special metallographic techniques are required. Square bars of cold-dvawn copper, mild steel and a 2024 aluminum alloy were forced through an adjulstable gap between two hardened steel rollers by pulling or pushing. The rollers were either free to rotate or were locked in position so that conditions comparable with drawing, rolling, ad containerless extrusion could be created at will. Push or pull forces as well as roll separatirg forces were measured. Forming efficiency and coefficients of friction were determined. For- slow-rate deformation the values ot µ wrere between 0.09 and 0.14. Possibilities for further investigation are indicated. THIS work was undertaken with the aim of a) determining the principal parameters of cold drawing under simplified conditions directly, without recourse to speculative assumptions and b) comparing drawing with rolling and extrusion from the viewpoint of forces involved and deformation efficiency. Data of type a) relating forces in axially-symmet-rical drawing to die geometry. drafting schedules, material properties and lubrication conditions are abundant. Their intrinsic value is. however. limited as long as the radial die forces are unknown. On the other hand. the difficulties associated with measurement of these forces are serious as witnessed by the extreme paucity of such information."" Comparative investigations of type b) were also remarkably few and they all employed ring-shaped dies through which round bars were either drawn or pushed.2-4 Only in one case were the applied and the die splitting forces measured simultaneously.2 In order to simplify the problem, deformation under approximately biaxial conditions was adopted in the present work;. This enables both the drawing (rolling, extruding) efforts and the separating forces to be measured with reasonable ease by conventional methods. Since drawing, extrusion, and rolling can be carried out under virtually identical conditions only in a roller die. an adjustable tool of this type was constructed. The circular die profile involved a difficulty with interpreting the drawing and extrusion data. This was obviated by arbitrarily defining the angle between a contact chord and the drawing plane as the -.equivalent" die semiangle. The simplification was considered permissible since the effect of die angle was not specifically investigated. An additional conlplication was caused by the square cross section of the processed bars. This shape was selected as a compromise between the desire to have as massive as possible specimens and the capacity of the roller die. The metal was only partially restrained from spreading laterally. the flow conditions being therefore intermediate between plane stress and plane strain. On the Huber-Mises yield criterion the constrained and uni-axial yield strengths differ by up to 16 pct but the actual error due to the ignorance of the constraint factor was presumably much smaller than the maximum. In spite of these reservations it was felt that the method employed and results obtained have some merit. With certain further refinements to be indicated later, this technique can yield data perhaps more useful for checking metal forming theories than other, mostly indirect, methods. EXPERIMENTAL Materials—The metals used together with their principal mechanical properties are listed in Table I.

The Rheological properties of pulps are non-Newtonian in character and more than one viscosity parameter is necessary to describe their behavior, therefore, the single term 'apparent viscosity' which has been used in the past may be misleading. The study reported in this paper uses a dimensional analysis based on the Ostwald-de Waele shear stress-rate of shear model for non-Newtonian liquids to develop velocity and resistance equations for falling spheres. An electronic monitoring apparatus was assembled for determining the velocity of metallic bodies as they fall through opaque liquids and suspensions. By means of this apparatus the behavior of the viscosity parameters of the Ostwald-de Waele model and the applicability of the proposed equations were examined for a number of non-Newtonian liquids. The validity of the equations for these liquids was confirmed. Preliminary data collected using solid-liquid suspensions established the validity of the form of the basic equations for these systems. The differential movement of solid particles through solid-liquid pulps and suspensions is very important LO many branches of engineering, such as minerals processing, soil mechanics, ceramic slip processing, oil well drilling-mud technology, materials-handling in pipelines, and many others. There is a dearth of fundamental knowledge on the flow resistance encountered by immersed bodies moving through solid-liquid suspensions. The resistance offered by Newtonian liquids to the movement of free settling spheres is well described for laminar and turbulent conditions by Stokes' and Newton's Laws, respectively. However, problems are encountered when attempts are made to extrapolate these simple relationships into solid liquid suspensions. The rheological properties of pulps are such that they are non-Newtonian in character;'" that is, the applied shearing stress and resulting rate-of-shear are related by non-linear functions, and thus, in the simplest case two viscosity parameters are necessary to describe their rheological properties. For this reason the single term 'apparent viscosity' which has been commonly used to explain the flow resistance of suspensions and non-Newtonian liquids may be misleading. It is realized that a rigorous analysis of the rnechanisms of momentum transport of liquid-solid systems is complex indeed. There are many variables that affect the rheological properties of the systems such as density, size, shape, and surface energy of the suspended solid and density and viscosity of suspending liquid, as well as the solid to liquid ratio. However, it was felt that a useful contribution to the knowledge of the behavior of suspensions could be made by examining the systems in terms of the basic fundamentals of nowNewtonian flow. This has led to the development, by means of dimensional analysis, of velocity and resistance equations, using two viscosity parameters to describe the velocity of penetrating bodies and the flow resistance encountered by these bodies, as they pass through non-Newtonian systems. THEORY In order to examine the effects of the rheological properties of solid-liquid suspensions on the movement of immersed bodies it is appropriate to start with non-Newtonian liquids and develop equations, analogous to those of Stokes and Newton, for laminar and turbulent flow respectively, from which quantitative information may be obtained. Further investigation would then be directed at the complex suspension systems, and the effects of the many variables on the velocity and resistance equations. Liquids are classified on a basis of viscosity which may be defined as the relationship between applied shear stress and resulting rate of shear?-'* Pure single phase liquids composed of small light molecules behave as Newtonian liquids, having a single viscosity parameter since the shearing stress and rate-of-shear are related by a linear function. Bingham plastics are similar but have a yield stress. Of particular importance in our investigation are dilatant (shear thickening) and pseudoplastic (shear thinning) non-Newtonian liquids, with and without yield values.

SINCE my working life of 32 yr has been spent in and about the anthracite mines of the Hudson Coal Co., and the previous 4 yr in a college school of mines, I can write best about the safety program of a coal mining company. However, most of the suggestions, statements and practices mentioned herein are applicable to the members of a safety organization and program of almost any industry. It is realized that industrial officials actually interested in real safety work are fully acquainted with the requirements of a practical safety program. Therefore, for such persons there may be nothing new in this paper. The Hudson Coal Co. of Scranton, Pa., employs 7,000 men and produces 5,000,000 tons of anthracite annually at nine collieries scattered for a distance of 40 miles throughout the Lackawanna and Wyoming valleys of northeastern Pennsylvania. For the past 17 yr of the above mentioned 32, I have been engaged in safety work as a safety inspector, assistant mine superintendent, and at present the safety engineer. I have also had the privilege of visiting coal and metal mines in other parts of the United States and Canada. We Americans are the most careless people in the world. If any one doubts this statement why are 100,000 of our people killed accidentally annually? Or why during the almost four years we were engaged in World War II were more of our people killed accidentally at home than were killed in our army, navy, marine corps, coast guard, and other services during the same period? We are careless everywhere in our homes, on the highway, at work and at play. The purpose of this paper is to outline the requisites of a safety department and its program to stop the accidents occurring to employees at work in mines or industrial plants. The first requisite for a safety program is that the management must be convinced of the need and value of a real safety program. By "management" is meant each department head from the president down. Otherwise a good safety department with a good safety program will not succeed because it will not have the proper personnel and equipment to work with, its rules and regulations will not be enforced, and the members of the safety department will be belittled in the eyes of most of the workmen and supervisors. Next, a safety engineer and his inspectors should have worked in the production end of the mines as workmen and also in an official capacity. They are then in a position to have practical and first hand knowledge of the accident hazards of the industry, how to prevent them, and in general the problems of both the workmen and officials. Some men are appointed as safety inspectors when they are physically unable to carry on as mine officials. Such men may know the safety end of the industry and even be safety-conscious, but if they are physically unable to be mine officials they are also physically unable to be safety inspectors, as a safety inspector in our mines must walk from 2 to 4 miles on each daily inspection-and visit each working

Metallic titanium has been prepared in small quantities since the beginning of the century. Hunter1 reported in 1910 that he obtained a malleable product of 99.9 pct purity by the reduction of the tetrachloride by sodium in a closed container. Later Van Arke12 and Fast prepared small quantities of malleable titanium by thermal decomposition of titanium iodide. Another method for producing malleable titanium from tetrachloride was reported by Kr0ll4 who used magnesium as the reducing agent. More recently Dean, Long, Wartman, and Anderson5 working at the U.S. Bureau of Mines have reported the preparation of the metal on a pilot plant scale by the reduction of titanium tetrachloride by magnesium in an atmosphere of helium. Their product, which is malleable, was used in the present investigation. Early in 1948 after the work of this paper was completed Campbell, Jaffee, Blocher, Gurland, and Gonser6 described the strength and working characteristics of pure titanium which was prepared by the iodide method on a scale producing 300 to 600 g per run, in the form of 0.3- to 0.4-in. diam rods. Their product is characterized by low hardness and large capacity for cold work which they attribute to a high degree of purity with respect to oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon. Titanium has a melting point of about 1725 C," it may be classed as a light metal since the specific gravity is 4.5 g per cc-I. The crystal structure is close-packed hexagonal from room temperature to 885°C. Above this temperature the structure is reported7 as body-centered cubic. The change in crystal structure has been associated with discontinuities in specific heat,8 electric resistanceg and theimoelec-tric force10 at temperatures near 890°C. It is reportedll that annealed titanium has a tensile strength of 78,700 psi which can be increased by cold-work to 123,000 psi. In the present investigation, the lattice constants at room temperature, the thermal expansivity between 30 and 800°C, as well as the electrical resistivity and thermoelectric force against platinum between — zoo and I000 C have been determined. Materials For the measurements, two series of specimens were prepared from titanium furnished by the U. S. Bureau of Mines. The first was made from an annealed sintered compact, 0.38 in. thick. Sections of the compact were cold-swaged with intermediate anneals in vacuum to the sizes used. Sizes over 0.25-in. diam were annealed at I000°C and smaller sizes at 800°C. Specimens originating from the sintered compact are designated in this paper as A. The second series of specimens was made from a rod of titanium, 0.19 in. in diam, which was cold-swaged with the necessary intermediate anneals to the required sizes. This series of specimens is designated B. The impurities in the specimens of titanium, determined by chemical analysis, are given in Table 1. Oxygen and nitrogen which Were not determined by analysis, are probably present although in small quantities in view of the ductility of the material.

The function of a preposition is to show the relation of one thing to another; it is necessary therefore for the writer to select the preposition that indicates the particular relation, otherwise he will fail to express himself clearly. Is it against common sense' to suggest that a Government is justified, morally as well as constitutionally, in preventing the decay of an industry by insisting upon the amalgamation of the prosperous with the needy? All these seven prepositions are used correctly. With the first dredge introduced in Russia, of Werf Conrad, Haarlem, make, this method of alluvial dining became important. Here the prepositions "with", "in", and "of" are used wrongly. He means: "This method of a1lu;ial mining sprang into importance shortly after the first dredge, made at the Werf Conrad, Haarlem, was introduced into ;Russia." The statement itself ii not true, but for that I am not responsible. Once, while I was serving with him, we were frozen in out of sight of land in the Gulf of Pichili in the North of China. Admiral Fisher wrote thus. He has used nine prepositions in making this brief statement. The sequence of three prepositions "in out of" is particularly awkward.

THERE has been some discussion among blast-furnace operators regarding the relative merits of tuyeres of the converging type and tuyeres designed in an attempt to produce a diverging jet of air. An article1 on Progress in German Blast Furnace Practice indicates the interest in this subject abroad. This article illustrates a diverging type of tuyere which is shown here in Fig. 1A. The design appears to be rather poor as regards known properties of air flow. The adoption of this. tuyere, the article states, resulted in a decrease of blast pressure of about 4 lb. per sq. in. and an increase of the output of the furnace. If the improvements mentioned are due entirely to the change in tuyere design, the subject of tuyere design seemed worthy of investigation and this paper is a report of such work. Because of the gain in efficiency brought about by the use of a diverging tuyere in the German plant, it was thought desirable to investigate the shape of the air streams issuing from various-types of tuyeres to ascertain whether the gain was due to the tuyere itself or to the distribution of the air in the furnace. Since it is difficult to do experimental work on a full-sized furnace, or even on full-sized tuyeres, and because of the equipment available for the work, it was decided to carry out the work on scale models of tuyeres. Therefore, in this work, single tuyeres were used and the blast discharged into the atmosphere. The shape of the air stream was determined by means of a Pitot tube suitably supported in the air stream at various positions. The air was. furnished by a Roots blower driven by a 10-hp. direct-current motor having field control, and capable of discharging 250 cu. ft. per min. with a pressure on the discharge of 4 in. of mercury. A modern blast furnace with 21-ft. hearth requires about 50,000 cu. ft. per min. of free air at from 16 to 23 lb. per sq. in. pressure, depending upon the type of burden. This pressure is the total pressure required to force the air through the burden and through the tuyeres. Upon computation the pressure drop through the tuyeres is about 1 to 2 lb. per sq. in. A series of both welter and gas puttern Hoods was made in the laboratory to study the oil recovery performances of .such operations. These tests were contlrrctt~tl on consolidated sandstone models, using oil. water, and gas. The model floods were scaled to reprotlrrce field performance under gas arid water five-spot injection. X-ray shadowgraphs permitted observation of the gross fluid movement within the models. A method was developed for applying the mobility ratio concept to water flooding and dispersed gas drives in a five-spot well pattern. The area1 sweep efficiency. tit breakthrough for dispersed gas drives is much higher than previorsly expected, Iying in the range of 50 to 100 per cent. A method is presented for predictitig the water-oil ratio performance of five-spot pattern water flood., in uniform sands. This method is verified experimentally for the cotidition of 120 free gas initially present and for va1ues of gas saturation normally encountered in fields following depletion operations. Prodrrction perfort?zut~cc for pattern gas injection is also predictable by this method. INTRODUCTION In field pattern hater flooding or dispersed gas injection operations, the displacing fluid (water or gas) is injected and oil is produced through wells which are, area-wise. small openings in a large container or rescrwir of oil. As a result, not all of the area between the injection and producing wells is necessarily contacted by the injected fluid by the time it first reaches the producing wells. The question arises in predicting oil recovery. as to what traction of the pattern area involved is contacted by either the injected water or gas due to the relative position of the injection and producing wells. This is the areal sweep efficiency. It is also desirable to know how well arrangement affects the oil production performance. A solution to this problem has been attempted by many means. Mathematical analysis¹,²,³, and electrolytic models', have been used to establish a breakthrough areal sweep efficiency of 73 per cent for a five-spot pattern in which the ability of the oil to flow ahead of the invading fluid is equal to the ability of the invading fluid to flow in the invaded zone. All of these studies simulate only one of many field conditions. Improved studies of areal sweep efficiency at breakthrough were made using the fluid mapper5, poten-tiometric models" and X-ray shadowgraph techniques. In these it was possible to study the effect of variations in mobility of the injected and displaced fluids, and so to cover a wide range of field conditions. The limitation of these studies is that, with these models, it was not possible to simulate the saturation gradient behind the flood front when oil is displaced by gas or water. In the most recent published technical paperS on the subject, a method was presented for predicting the oil recovery performance after breakthrough in a five-spot pattern water flood. The method involved correlations which were obtained experimentally using miscible fluids. One limitation of this work was that a saturation gradient, usually found in immiscible fluid displacement, was absent in these studies. Also the laboratory studies did not cover the situation of a water flood following oil recovery by depletion drive. as is the situation in most field water floods. Recrystallization and grain growth in thoria dispersed nickel and nichrome were recently studied by Webster as a function of temperature and deformation. The unexpected part of these results was that specimens which had received heavier deformation developed greater resistance to recrystallization. Retardation of recrystallization was accompanied by the formation of voids around thoria dispersion. To explain these results, Webster suggested that the formation of void around the particles increased the effective size of thoria particles. This resulted in greater impediment to the grain-boundary migration and as a consequence the recrystallization of the matrix is retarded. In the present note an alternative and more probable explanation for the effect of voids on recrystallization is presented. The exact mechanism of void formation in thoria dispersed nickel or nichrome is not known. However, it is reasonably certain that it must be preceded by the stress concentration in the matrix around thoria dispersion during the deformation.'' The resulting stress concentration must be sufficient enough to supply the surface energy for the new surfaces created. Further, the decrease in the strain energy of the matrix surrounding the potential void nucleus must be larger than the surface energy of the newly created surface. The release of strain energy due to formation of crack results in a strain free cylinder of the material around the voids.13 If the void formation is not localized, at few points only (as is the case here), this process may lead to considerable amount of release of strain energy of the matrix. The pattern of recrystallization behavior of single phase homogeneous matrix as well as the matrix having a second phase dispersion is same except for the fact recovery and recrystallization are more clearly delineated.14 In general, the recrystallization temperature is lowered (i.e., recrystallization is easier) with increase in the amount of cold work. This is due to the increase in stored energy in the matrix with increasing amount of deformation. If somehow there is a relaxation of strain energy in the matrix, the recrystallization should become difficult because of the decrease in the amount of stored energy available for recrystallization. Since the formation of voids leads to a decrease in the strain energy of matrix, the recrystallization of the matrix would be inhibited due to the formation of voids during deformation prior to recrystallization. It has been observed by earlier workers15'16 that the presence of preexisting voids in a matrix retards the recrystallization. The essential issue here is how do the voids act to produce this effect. If the voids influence recrystallization only by blocking the grain boundary migration, then the effect should be maximum when they are present almost exclusively along grain boundary. These conditions are obtained during high temperature deformation. However, the voids produced due to creep along grain boundary are not able to prevent recrystallization17 suggesting that they are not effective in blocking grain boundary movement. Recently it was shown by Davies and Williams that the voids can act as sinks for vacancies." As a result the processes dependent on vacancy diffusion like recovery, recrystallization, dislocation climb, and so forth, will be hindered. This fact may be responsible for inhibition of recrystallization during subsequent deformation and annealing cycles. It is to be noted here that there is a large difference between the density of voids in creep experiments and the other experiments where retarding effect of voids on recrystallization is seen. The voids in former may number up to l04 to l05 per sq cm whereas in latter cases the voids density is typically around 1010 to 1013 per sq cm. It appears that the decrease in supply of vacancies in creep is insufficient to adversely affect the recrystallization due to low void population. The author is grateful to P. Das Gupta and S. P. Ray for helpful discussions. Author's Reply D. Webster Tiwari appears to have misunderstood the nature of grain boundary-particle interactions. Tiwari (quoting Cahn) states that second phase particles become more effective as they become smaller, therefore as the voids in TDNiC make the thoria particles effectively bigger their ability to resist grain boundary movement is impaired. This particle size argument was originally proposed in the form of an equation by Zener 20 years agol9 and is not necessarily valid as is discussed below. However, assuming it is valid, it predicts a greater boundary restraining effect by smaller particles simply because their combined cross sectional area is greater at a constant volume. If the number of particles remains the same and their effective size increases, as in the present case, Zener's equation predicts a greatly reduced grain size. This is because the effect

Experience has shown that there are some factors connected with the drying of fine washed coal that are not present in drying of slack coal as normally practiced at cement kilns or pulverized coal plants. It is the purpose of this paper to show some of these variations as they have been encountered under actual operation. The Champion No. 1 cleaning plant of the Pittsburgh Coal Co. uses the wet system of cleaning coal. The plant is equipped to produce commercial sizes or mixtures, the primary sizes being plus 6 in. and 4 by 6 in., which are hand-picked. Minus 4-in. sizes are all cleaned by the wet process. To produce a commercial product as free of moisture as possible, the washed coal is first passed over sizing and dewatering screens, then each size except the — ?-in. coal is conveyed to loading booms by slow-moving draining conveyors. As the +?-in. sizes are not heat-dried, no data will be given, as it is the purpose of this paper to describe the heat drying of — ?-in. coal as practiced at the Champion No. 1 plant of the Pittsburgh Coal Company. To fully appreciate the conditions, it must be remembered that the — ?-in. product is now shipped at a lower moisture content than when received from the mine. The incoming coal in the — ?-in. size will average 5 per cent. moisture and the shipped product 3 per cent. moisture. This is a case where a wet process gives a reduction of both ash and moisture in the fine sizes. The shipped product, therefore, is more uniform in all characteristics, and uniformity of product is the most important single factor in coal preparation. The 0 by ?-in. coal is first dewatered on slow-moving continuous bucket dewatering elevators, running at the rate of 40 ft. per minute, with 48-in. perforated buckets with ¼ by 1½-in. slots, spaced ? by 2?-in. centers staggered. The moisture in the coal discharged from the elevators runs 20 to 28 per cent., depending on the fineness of the product. The discharge from the dewatering elevator is further drained on a drag-type conveyor equipped with ½-mm. wedge wire screen. HOG MOUNTAIN is in the north central part of Tallapoosa County, Alabama, about 13 miles northeast from Alexander City. The Hog Mountain Mining and Milling Co. controls 1658 acres of land and is the only company operating in the district. The principal mine workings are in sections 10 and 15, T.24N., R.22E. The region has been visited by geologists many times, has been briefly described in several papers,1 and mentioned in many others. No detailed map of the mine or vicinity has been published. The field work for this report was started in March, 1934, as part of the Public Works reemployment program. About a month and a half was spent mapping both the surface and underground geology. The mine owners and operators have cooperated in every way possible to facilitate the work. N. 0. Johnson, the mine engineer, E. W. Ells-worth, J. E. McCoy and J. G. Englebert have acted as assistants for part of the work. The University of Alabama and the State Geologist's office have aided materially by permitting free use of their libraries and laboratory equipment.

Four types of slope failures in waste dumps are recognized debris flow, foundation failure, edge slump, and blowout. The first three types, although at times causing considerable damage to property and interfering with mine operations, are not usually dangerous to personnel because of their slow rate of movement. The fourth type, the blowout, is the most dangerous because of its explosive mode of failure and lack of forewarning. The December 1969 failure at Verona dump is presented as an example of a blowout. Data from piezometer holes indicate that the blowout was due to perched leach solutions near the face of the dump. The level of water in this zone is very closely related to the rate of leach water application on the dump. A detailed analysis of core samples indicates that the impounded water was perched on a zonal accumulation of jarosite which is associated with a buried dump surface. Drain holes proved successful in controlling perched leach solutions in the critical zone near the face of the dump. Monitoring of the water level in the perched zone is considered essential in preventing blowouts. The use of drain and piezometer holes has allowed an increase in the rate of water application on the dump while preventing additional failure.

Alloys of poly crystalline Nb-H have been tensile tested at 77" and 120°K after slow-cooling and after quenching from room temperature. A rationale has been developed to explain the effect of cooling rate on ductility in terms of microstructure. The inferior ductility of the slow-cooled alloys in this temperature range can be attributed to the precipitation of coarse hydride particles that fracture in the early stages of plastic deformation. Quenching Produced much smaller hydride particles and a decreased tendency for initia-tion and popagation of cracks. Prismatic dislocation loops, punched into the matrix of quenched alloys, eliminate the yield point and may Play some role in the low temperature ductility of the quenched alloys. The difference in ductility between quenched and slow-cooled V-H alloys was even greater than that observed in the N b-H alloys. It is well known that the ductility of Nb-H and V-H alloys decreases with increasing hydrogen concentra-tion and with decreasing temperature.1-l1 The follow-ing are some of the numerous mechanisms that have been adopted in attempts to explain these observations: 1) hydrogen-dislocation interarction,4'6 2) lowering of the crack surface energy by adsorbed hydrogen,9'10 3) localized lowering of the niobium bond strength,9 and 4) exertion of pressure inside voids by molecular hydrogen.6 A recent study1' indicates that, in some way, the embrittlement is related to the precipitation of a hydrogen-rich phase, because embrittlement and hydrogen solubility have the same temperature dependence. Most of the investigators observed that at very low temperatures there was a return of the ductility. Thus, hydrogenated niobium and vanadium may be said to exhibit a low temperature ductility minimum."1'8'9 It has been reasoned by most observers that diffusion is required for the embrittlement mechanism to be operative, and that as hydrogen becomes immobile at very low temperatures, the ductility increases. This investigation of the mechanical behavior of Nb-H al-loys under various conditions is an attempt to gain a better understanding of the low temperature ductility minimum. EXPERIMENTAL Tensile specimens, with gage length dimensions 20 by 3 mm, were machined from sheet stock" and both faces were ground on wet 600 grit Sic paper to obtain a final thickness of 0.5 mm. Annealing as described earlier12 resulted in average grain diameters of 0.3 mm. The recrystallized niobium tensile specimens were electropolished in 90 parts H2S04, 10 parts HF (48.9 pct) by volume, at 287°K and 30 v. Hydrogen, which may have been present in the starting material and/or added during specimen preparation, was removed by annealing at 1073°K in a dynamic vacuum of 2 X 10-6 torr. Hydrogenated specimens (1.15 at. pct H) were prepared by reaction with a known quantity of pure hydrogen (obtained by thermal decomposition of UH3) at 1073oK, followed by cooling at the rate of 100" per hr. These were vacuum encapsulated, homogenized at 573°K for 3 to 5 hr, and furnace-cooled. Tensile tests were conducted on an Instron machine at a strain rate of 4 x l0-5 per sec. The gripping device was such that the specimen was positioned below the crosshead. Thus, subambient test temperatures could be obtained by immersion of the device in a cooling bath of either liquid nitrogen or Freon-12. The temperature of the Freon-12 was controlled within ± 0.1°K of the desired temperature by automatically monitoring the flow of liquid nitrogen through a copper coil in the bath. Slow-cooling to 77°K was accomplished as follows. The testing device was surrounded by a rubber jacket, open at the top and with small holes in the bottom. Liquid nitrogen, brought up to the bottom of the jacket, entered the holes and vaporized quickly. The temperature was monitored at the specimen with a copper-constantan thermocouple, and a constant cooling rate of 2 deg per min was easily achieved by controlling the level of the liquid nitrogen outside the jacket. IRON ore is the cause of the present trouble in Morocco. At least three nations are interested in the outcome and private syndicates have been active. The iron deposits are found in that mountainous northern coast line known as the Rif. This is an uplift that has been cut through, by the northward drainage, representing an ancient land surface. Erosion has produced .a fiordlike coast, which circum- stance has aided contraband' traffic to the tribes dominated by Abd-el-Krim, the chief of the clan of the Beni Urriaguel, near the center of 'the north coast, opposite Alhucemas. The iron deposits are extensive in the territory of the Beni Urriaguel. They were "located," if such a term is permissible, many years ago. The first arrangements, through direct contracts with the tribal chieftains, have been reinforced by compliance with the subsequent code under the Spanish protectorate in 1914. Under those terms, the location had to be made through the Arbitral Commission sitting in Paris. These locations, or "denouncements," were made by the I-louse of Mannesmann, of Hamburg.

In the present note we present thermal-analysis data for the liquidus curve from 0 to 76 at. pct Se and for the selenium-rich monotectic reaction in the Pb-Se system. We have previously reported that no expey-imental eviderzce was found for a lead-rich monotectic reaction, at -860°C with a monotectic composition of -20.5 at. pct Se, as found by Nozato and Igaki.&apos; Our additional data substantiated this earlier finding and extended the composition range studied. The alloys were prepared from semiconductor -grade lead and selenium purchased from the American Smelting and Refining Co. Both elements were 99.999+ wt pct pure as determined by the supplier. The impurities for lead were Fe (1 ppm) and Cu & ppm) while for selenium the impurities were Cu (< 1 ppm), As (< 1 ppm), Te (1 ppm), and C1 (<1 ppm). The general procedures used for thermal analysis were those specified by the National Bureau of Standards. A Pt/Pt-10 pct Rh thermocouple calibrated against the freezing points of zinc and copper purchased from the National Bureau of Standards and antimony (99.985 pct pure) purchased from A. D. Mackay, New York, was used for all the thermal analysis. The thermocouple electromotive force was measured with a Rubicon Type B potentiometer used in conjunction with a galvanometer with a sensitivity of 0.5 pV (mm) -&apos;. The absolute accuracy of this thermal-analysis system was *0.5"C. One-hundred-gram alloys of the desired composition were sealed in quartz crucibles, with a central thermocouple well, at a pressure of less than 10"1 Torr. The alloys were initially heated well above the liquidus curve and shaken vigorously to insure homogeneity. Cooling curves were then taken by the direct method at cooling rates ranging from -0.5" to 1.5"C (min)-&apos;. The phase diagram from 0 to 76 at. pct Se as determined by direct thermal analysis is shown in Fig. l.* An extrapolation of the selenium-rich portion of the liquidus curve to the monotectic reaction isotherm (678.3"C) gave a value of 76.1 at. pct Se for the monotectic composition. A tabulation of all the thermal-analysis data is given in Table I. For the sake of clarity the points for the 49.00 and 49.16 at. pct Se alloys were not drawn on this phase diagram, see Table I. for the lead-rich monotectic reaction found by Nozato and Igaki.&apos; This result was further substantiated by the fact that none of twelve lead-rich alloys, see Table I, examined for this monotectic reaction exhibited a thermal arrest in the temperature range (849" to 863°C) cited by Nozato and Igaki for the lead-rich monotectic reaction. Hence, our results tend to support the earlier qualitative work of ~elabon&apos; and Friedrich and ~eroux" in the 0 to 50 at. pct portion of the phase diagram, though the selenium-rich monotectic composition and reaction isotherm temperature were in agreement with the approximate values (75 at. pct Se and 672" to 680°C) given by Nozato and ~~aki. &apos;
