The paper relates to the laboratory and pilot plant studies that have been carried out by Sherritt Gordon Mines Ltd., Metallurgical Research Div., in developing the ammonia pressure leach process for extracting copper, nickel, cobalt, and sulphur from high grade nickel concentrate produced from Lynn Lake ores, and describes in some detail the chemistry of the process. IT is well known'.' 2 that copper, nickel, cobalt, zinc, ferrous iron, and a number of other metals combine with ammonia in aqueous solution to form complex ions of the form [Me(NH,)x]"+. The stability and solubility of these ions depend on the concentration of the metal ion in solution, on the amount of NH, present, and on the amount and type of anions present, e.g., OH-, C0;-, NO,, C1-, SO;-. If ammonia is partially or completely removed from such solutions, for example by boiling, the soluble ammines tend to decompose and the metals precipitate as basic salts. These properties of metal ammines have found practical application in the commercial recovery of copper, nickel, and cobalt from a variety of ores. In an operation formerly conducted at Kennecott"" the mill tailing containing 0.80 pct Cu as copper carbonate was leached by percolation with an ammonia-ammonium carbonate solution to dissolve the copper as the ammine. At Calumet and Hecla0-" With a mill tailing containing about 0.4 pct Cu as metallic copper, it has been found necessary to aerate the ammonia-ammonium carbonate leach solutions between stages to oxidize the solubilized copper. At Nicarol"-" where nickel and cobalt occur as oxides and silicates which are not soluble in ammonia, the ore is heated to decompose silicates and to selectively reduce the nickel and cobalt to metal, leaving the iron as Fe,O,, and is then leached with ammonia-ammonium carbonate solution accompanied by aeration to dissolve nickel and cobalt as ammines. In each of these leaching operations, the anion present is CO, and the metals can be precipitated from the leach solution as oxide (copper) or hydroxide and carbonate (nickel and cobalt) by boil- ing off NH, and C02 both of which are recycled to treat a subsequent ore charge. The products-—oxide, hydroxide, or carbonate—can be treated by conventional smelting, calcining, or electrolytic methods to convert them to refined metals. Thus the procedures mentioned utilize the properties of the ammines to extract copper, nickel, and cobalt from nonsulphide ores and separate them from the leach solutions. These processes have the advantage that they can be carried out in closed vessels at atmospheric pressure, that the leaching solutions are specific for the desired metals, that the metals can be recovered as relatively pure compounds by the boiling operation, and that the NH, and CO, can be recycled. Also, as the leach solutions after boiling and filtration are substantially free of metals, NH,, and CO,, they can be discarded, thus facilitating the control of the water balance in the leaching circuit. When, as is the case with Sherritt Gordon concentrates, sulphides are treated with ammonia solution in the presence of oxygen, the leach solution contains SO,--, and an entirely different set of conditions is encountered. The ammine sulphates (of nickel, for example) are more soluble than the carbonates and can be only partially decomposed by boiling. The SO, and NH, in the solutions can not be recovered by boiling. Thus, despite the more favorable leaching conditions resulting from high solubility of the ammine sulphates, the recovery of metals, NH,, and SO, from the solutions must be effected by other means. Sherritt Gordon Nickel Concentrate Treatment The Ni-Cu-Co flotation concentrate produced at Lynn Lake'" contains 12 to 16 pct Ni, 1 to 2 pct Cu, 0.2 to 0.5 pct Co, 33 to 40 pct Fe, 28 to 34 pct S, 8 to 20 pct insoluble, and less than 0.02 oz per ton precious metals. The nickel is present chiefly as pentlandite, the copper as chalcopyrite, and the iron as pyrrhotite and pyrite. Most of the cobalt is thought to be present in pentlandite, although it is known that a small amount occurs as Co-Ni-pyrite.

When a metal or alloy is poured into a mold, internal stresses are set up by the cont,raction in volume on passing from the liquid state at the temperature of pouring to the solid state at the ordinary temperature. It is assumed by the writers that all castings are internally stressed. That any casting is internally stressed is shown by its warping or distortion on maturing at the ordinary temperature, by warping or cracking on heating, or by cracking or distortion on machining. In the investigation made by the writers, the internal stresses in cast non-ferrous alloys were studied with a view to examining the effects of heat treatment (i.e., simple anneal) on the release of such stresses. Data have been obtained that show quantitatively that internal stresses can be removed by appropriate heat treatment. The investigation was limited to a study of the effect of heat treatment on stress release in cast rings of the 87:7:5:1 copper-tin-zinc-lead alloy. The writers are indebted to E. G. Fahlman for the method used for inducing stress in cast rings; to M. E. Boyd for microscopic examination and for other aid; and to G. B. Dalrymple for the chemical analyses. Zinc monocrystals, when compressed nearly parallel to their basal planes (within 20), deform in a new way; and certain deformation markings, called "-bands," are typical of this new mode. Characteristics of these bands are described. Mechanical behavior of low angle zinc monocrystals was investigated in some detail. Recrystallization did not occur upon annealing of banded specimens that were free of deformation twins. -Bands do not seem to be the result of nonbasal slip, but rather, a result of a microbuckling mechanism. u-Bands differ qualitatively and quantitatively from ortho kink bands. A dislocation model, consistent with some of the features of u-bands, is described. THE plastic deformation of zinc monocrystals with slip planes (0001) nearly parallel to the stress axis was studied in this investigation. In a previous investigation, it was shown that some low angle zinc crystals (those with slip planes making angles of more than about 2.5+1° with the compression axis), deform by ortho kinking while others (those with slip planes making angles of less than 2.5+1° with the compression axis) deform in a new way.' This new mode of deformation will be described in some detail here. Some of its striking features are: 1—it operates only for compressive stresses, 2—its temperature dependence is anomalous, and 3—it exhibits a new type of "yield-point" behavior. The mode of deformation to be discussed is not new in the sense that no previous evidence of its existence had been reported. The markings that it creates on the cleavage surfaces of zinc crystals have been described by several investigators.'" However, this is the first time that it has been made to operate under controlled conditions so that its response to mechanical variables, temperature, and aging treatments could be investigated and its geometry completely described. Apparently. Jillson' as well as Holden3 and Pratt" believed that the small bands they observed were simply small versions of ortho kink bands. In fact, two of these authors3,6 "alled the markings "micro kink bands." In spite of the precedence, it is felt that this term is not entirely suitable because these bands do not have the same genesis as kink bands, and they are qualitatively different in structure. As will be indicated by later discussion, the bands seem to be related to the tensile deformation bands observed in aluminum. The present author has chosen to call the bands "micro deformation bands," or simply ",ubands," and the deformation process, ''p-banding." Experimental Methods Crystals were grown from 99.999+ pct Zn obtained from the New Jersey Zinc Co. The details of the technique are given elsewhere." It should suffice to say that the crystals were seeded for orientation control, and precision pyrex tubes were used for molding them. About 40 crystals were used, yielding some 130 specimens. Fig. 1 illustrates the typical form of the specimens and shows how the orientation angles are defined. The crystal specimens were usually 1 3/4 in. long and about 150 mil in diameter. The angle between the slip or cleavage plane (0001) and the specimen axis is designated by xo, while a is the angle between the maximum slope of the (0001) plane and the nearest close-packed direction [1210], vary ing from 0°to 30°. The crystals were cut into specimens with a jeweler's saw and the ends were squared by filing (specimens held in V-block). Crystals of this orientation are stiff toward bending, so this procedure introduced only deformation localized at the ends. Then the specimens were polished either chemically in 50 pct HNO³ or electrolytically in 20 pct chromic acid. The mechanical tests were made with an Instron testing machine. This machine weighs by means of electric strain gages on elastic bars and is quite stiff, since the full-load deflection of its load cells is at most 0.002 in. Most of the testing was done at a

The writer has been interested for some time in trying to appraise our industry's prospects for gasoline consumption over the next half dozen years or so. Anyone who has even approached the problem knows the intimate relationship to it of the number of automobiles in use— by automobiles I mean both passenger cars and trucks. Probably at least 90 per cent of our gasoline is used in automotive vehicles. Few of us in the oil industry needed to give much attention to the detailed figures, although the automobile industry seemed to interest itself in all sorts of calculations of replacement demand vs. new car demand, the average life of the car, the number scrapped, and the like. Probably many people in the oil industry, as well as outside it, were surprised at the way in which automobile registrations and gasoline consumption held up during the early years of the depression. A geometric model of interstitial solid solutions, which has been used previously as a basis for the prediction of carbon activities in Fe-C austenite, is shown to serve also for the calculation of nitrogen activities in Fe-N austenite. The model has been developed to enable predictions to be made of the activities of an interstitial element in the presence of two host atom species. The activities calculated via the model are shown to be in satisfactory agreement with the measured values in the austenite phase for carbon in Fe-C-Co, Fe-C-Cr, Fe-C-Ni, Fe-C-~n, Fe-C-Si, and Fe-C-V alloys and for nitrogen in Fe-N-Ni alloys. The effect of the second substitu-tional solute on the logarithm of the activity of the interstitial element is expressed as the product of a constant mad the atomic concentration of that solute. The constants so derived we related to the thermo-dynamic interaction coefficients which describe the effect on the activity coefficient of carbon of an added solute element. In recent years the thermodynamic activities of carbon and nitrogen in the single-phase austenite field have been determined for iron binary alloys and for several iron-base ternary alloys. In order to extend the use of these measurements, it is desirable to be able to predict with reasonable accuracy the activities of the interstitials at compositions and temperatures other than those which have been measured experimentally. In all the systems studied to date, the interstitial elements do not conform to ideal behavior. Hence, the available data cannot be extrapolated or interpolated using the simple thermodynamic concepts of solutions. Several models have, therefore, been formulated for the purpose of predicting the activity of an interstitial element in the presence of one species of host atom. These models can be divided into the geometric1"5 and energetic6-' types. The former group is based on the assumption that at low concentrations the activity of the interstitial species is determined by a composition-dependent configurational entropy term and an excess free-energy term which is temperature-dependent but independent of composition. The purpose of this paper is to show that the treatment, based on a geometric model, can be extended to enable predictions to be made of interstitial activities in the presence of two substitutional host atom species. THE CONFIGURATIONAL ENTROPY OF MIXING ICaufman5 has shown that the configurational entropy, S,, for a binary solution comprising of a host atom species, A, and an interstitial species, I, can be expressed as: where NI is the atom fraction of the interstitial species, R is the gas constant, and (2 - 1) is the number of interstitial sites excluded from occupancy by the strain field around each added interstitial atom. The number of interstitial sites per host atom, p, is unityg for the fcc austenite solutions considered here. The configurational entropy of mixing for a ternary solution comprising two substitutional atom species, A and B, and one interstitial species, I, can be derived similarly. Let the number of atoms per mole of each of these species in the solution be represented by «a, ng, and nI. From geometric considerations, it is improbable that the addition of a few atom percent of a second host atom species will change the type of sites (i.e., octahedral) in which the interstitial atom can be accommodated in the austenite lattice. At higher concentrations (determined largely by the relative atomic radii of the atomic species present and any tendency to nonrandom occupancy of the host lattice sites) other types of interstitial sites may become energetically favorable. Restricting consideration to compositions below this limit, for 1 = 1 the number of suitable interstitial sites is given by (n + nB). However, if each interstitial atom excludes from occupancy (Z - 1) additional sites, the total number of sites available for occupation is reduced to (n + ng)/Z. The number of vacant interstitial sites is given by: The total number of recognizable permutations of the atoms must include the recognizable, different configurations of the A and B atoms on the host lattice. The rate of internal sulfidation of austenitic Fe-Ti alloys in H2S-H2 gas mixtures is controlled primarily by sulfur diffusion, with counterdiffusion of titanium playing a minor role. At temperatures below 1100°C, enhanced diffusion along grain boundaries becomes important. The rate of internal sulfidation at 1300°C is approximately equal to the rate computed from the sulfur diffusion coefficient. The diffusion coefficient of titanium in y iron has been determined from electron microprobe traces in the base alloy near the subscale interface. The solubility of sulfur in Fe-Ti alloys has been measured in the temperature range from 1150° to 1300°C. The equilibrium sulfur content is found to increase with titanium content, due to the large effect of titanium on the activity coefficient of sulfur. The Ti-S interaction becomes stronger as the temperature decreases. TITANIUM as an alloying element in stainless steels is an effective scavenger for interstitial impurities, carbon in particular. Titanium is known to form stable sulfides; however extensive thermodynamic data on the Ti-S system are not available. Schindlerova and Buzek1 have shown that the Ti-S interaction in liquid iron is moderately strong. There have been no previous studies of the Ti-S interaction in solid iron. Internal sulfidation of Fe-Mn alloys was the subject of a recent investigation by Herrnstein.2 He found the rate of internal sulfidation to be an order of magnitude greater than predicted from available solubility and diffusivity data. A satisfactory explanation for the discrepancy could not be given. In the present study, the solubility of sulfur in austenitic Fe-Ti alloys was measured using a standard gas equilibration technique. Fe-Ti alloy specimens were also internally sulfidized. The rate of internal sulfidation was measured as a function of temperature and alloy composition. Supplementary electron micro-probe measurements were made to provide additional information on the nature of the internal sulfidation process. EXPERIMENTAL The starting materials were alloys containing 0.12, 0.24, 0.38, and 0.54 wt pct Ti. The alloys were made in an induction furnace by adding titanium to electrolytic iron that previously had been vacuum-carbon-deoxidized. The major impurity in the alloys as determined by chemical analysis was carbon. The carbon content of the alloys averaged about 100 ppm; metallic impurities were presented in concentrations of 50 ppm or less. Specimens were made in the form of flat plates, 0.03 by 2 by 4 cm for the equilibrium measurements and 0.5 by 1.5 by 3 cm for the rate measurements. The experiments were performed in a vertical resistance furnace wound with molybdenum wire and containing a recrystallized alumina reaction tube. In the gas train, flow rates of the reacting gases were measured using capillary flow meters. The source of H2S was a mixture of approximately 2 pct H2S in H2, which was obtained in cylinders from the Matheson Co. A chemical analysis was provided with each cylinder. The H2-H2S mixture was diluted with additional hydrogen to obtain the desired ratio of H2S to H2, and the resulting mixture was diluted with 30 pct Ar to minimize thermal segregation of H2S in the furnace. Argon was purified by passage over copper chips at 350°C and subsequently over anhydrone. Hydrogen was purified by passage over platinized asbestos at 450°C and then over anhydrone. The H2-H2S mixture was purified by passage over platinized asbestos and then over Pas. The samples used in the solubility measurements were analyzed for sulfur by combustion and iodometric titration. The subscale thickness in the internally sulfidized samples was measured on a polished cross section, using a microscope with a micrometer stage. Electron microprobe traces for titanium in solution were made on several samples that had been internally sulfidized. A Cambridge microanalyzer was used, and the known titanium content at the center of the specimen was used as a calibration standard. The procedure for the microprobe measurements will be described further when the results are presented. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Equilibrium Data. Fig. 1 shows the sulfur concentration as a function of gas composition for three alloys equilibrated at 1300°C. The dashed line is based on data published by Turkdogan, Ignatowicz, and pearson3 for pure iron. The breaks in the curves are the saturation points for the alloys. The fact that the initial slope decreases with increasing titanium content indicates that titanium interacts strongly with sulfur in solution. To obtain information on the composition of the precipitating sulfide phase, the measurements described in Fig. 1 were extended to higher sulfur partial pressures. These results are shown in Fig. 2. (The initial portions of the curves are reproduced from Fig. 1.) The highest PH2s /pH2 ratio used is believed to be below the ratio required for the formation of a liquid sulfide phase. Time series experiments were used to study the approach to equilibrium in the samples. It was found that equilibrium with the gas phase was reached in less than 4 hr at 1300°C.

This chapter deals with those types of silica raw materials that have been segregated and refined by natural processes into nearly monomineralic deposits and hence, by virtue of their high degree of purity, have become the sources of commodities having special and somewhat restricted commercial uses. In some instances, these raw materials occur in nature as unconsolidated quartzose sand or gravel and can be exploited and used with very little preparation and expense. More often, they occur as sandstone, conglomerate, quartzite, quartz mica schist, or massive igneous quartz which must be crushed, washed, screened, and sometimes chemically treated before commodities of suitable compositional and textural characteristics can be successfully prepared. The occurrence and distribution of silica raw materials is summarized and an effort has been made to bring commodity definitions, critical properties, and specifications up to date. Presentation of mining and processing methods is considered beyond the scope of this article; they are, for the most part, conventional and well known. New production techniques are currently reported in the trade journals and are later adequately described in technical publications as promptly as competitive restrictions allow. Discussion on Basis of Use ABRASIVE USES Industrial silica used for abrasive purposes falls into three main categories: (a) blasting sand; (b) glass-grinding sand; and (c) stone-sawing and rubbing sand. Blasting sand is a sound closely-sized quartz sand which, when propelled at high velocity by air, water, or controlled centrifugal force, is effective for such uses as cleaning metal castings, removing paint and rust, or renovating stone veneer. It is commonly referred to as Sand Blast sand. Multicycle quartz sand is an efficient blasting agent by merit of its survival characteristics which are soundness, toughness, and hardness. Steel grit and shot have supplanted it to a large extent but owing to their higher cost and tendency toward deterioration in storage, are still not universally used. It is conceded that angularity promotes faster cutting but this is offset by a higher loss in fines. The peening action of a rounded grain is a desirable feature in achieving a satin finish for certain light metal castings but a subangular grain is unsurpassed for fast heavy cutting. Specifications are chiefly based on size frequency distribution but it is mandatory that the grain be free of adhering clay or irony coatings. Material that dusts upon handling will not be tolerated. There is no uniform trade designation for the many blasting sand grades. Most producers sell on the basis of numbered grades; that is, No. 1, No. 2 and so on, this generally connoting fine to coarser grades. Designation of grade by the two sieve sizes between which most of the material lies, is practiced in some areas. Thus, in a No. 1220 grade, 98 pct of the material passes a 12 mesh sieve and is retained on a 20 mesh sieve. Blasting sand specifications vary according to use. Coarse grades range from 4 mesh to 12 mesh, medium grades range from 12 mesh to 30 mesh, finer grades may range from 20 mesh to 100 mesh or finer. INTRODUCTION. THE following general survey of the character and present condition of the silver-mines of Mexico, though not offered as a detailed treatise, has been prepared with care, is believed to he generally up-to-date, and is offered as a summary which may be found useful by mining engineers. Mexico has ranked for several centuries first among the silver-producing countries. It is now second as copper-producer, and seventh as gold-producer, with a fast-increasing output every year. The total amount of capital invested in its mining- and smelting-works is more than $250,000,000, while the yearly metallic production is $160,000,000. There are more than 20,000 recorded mining properties. The silver-mines of Mexico represent deposits of three principal classes: (1) veins and stock-works in eruptive rocks; (2) fissure-veins crossing the crystalline schists, granite, diorite, etc. ; and (3) veins and replacement-deposits in limestone. The true fissure-veins in some districts contain (in value) more gold than silver. In other deposits, the silver is decreasing in depth, leaving galena and zinc-blende as the principal ores.

THE title of this article is descriptive, but not complete, for psychological evaluation is almost as important as rigid economic evaluation. This refers to those human traits that cause people to be too optimistic about the projects they are sponsoring, to overlook obvious weaknesses, to base decisions on incomplete and inaccurate data, and to gloss over embarrassing problems. Investment of capital in a new industrial mineral project is warranted only after rigorous economic analyses based on unquestionable facts. A plunge into production cannot be justified solely because these minerals have been deposited in the ground and are therefore free. There are no specially favorable economic laws that make the business of industrial minerals more attractive than any other. The factors of supply and demand, marketing, technological changes, taxes, competition, and fluctuating prices apply as much to industrial minerals as to other business enterprises. What is more, industrial minerals are subject to the higher risks that all mining enterprises face.

HAND picking was the earliest form of coal preparation, first practiced to improve the outward appearance of the coal being loaded and to remove any pieces that might appear objectionable to the buyer. It is still extensively practiced on the plus 1-in. sizes and particularly on the plus 4-in. and larger sizes. The percentage of ash reduction that can be obtained by hand picking depends entirely upon the amount of free impurity occurring in the coal. In a particularly dirty seam, where a considerable quantity of rock occurs with the coal as mined, hand picking produces sizable reductions in ash. If the coal is prepared clean at the working face hand picking is a final check; in some cases, on the smaller sizes, it is practiced only to show that an effort is being made to prepare a clean product. Because of the variety and different methods of handling coal, the early plants were not always adapted for e5cient hand picking. At most mines an attempt is made to - remove the visual impurities at one or more of the following places in the surface plant: (1) in the tipple during screening; (2) on picking band, belt, or shaking conveyors; (3) during the loading of the coal as it goes into the railroad car. Whatever the physical arrangements of the plant may be, the usual practice is to run the coal over the screen, picking table or boom at such a rate that each piece of impurity is exposed to the view of the picker. Coal should be uniformly sized and spread out on the table so as not to exceed one particle in depth. The flow should be even in tonnage and the speed of travel should be from 30 to 60 ft. per minute and not exceed 80 ft. per minute. The dirtier the coal, the slower the speed required for a fixed number of pickers. Actually, picking capacity depends on the number of particles per minute that can be picked out and rejected. The percentage of impurity removed is determined by this and the average weight of piece rejected. Handling a mixture of sizes from nut to the largest lump over the same picking table or conveyor is not conducive to efficient separation by hand picking because the lump hides the smaller impurities. Picking tables should not exceed 5 ft. in width, so that a picker on either side will be able to remove impurities from the center of the table. Guards usually are placed at the side of the screen, boom or table, to allow the pickers to stand close enough to remove the impurities without too long a reach.

Electrical conductavity and therrnoelectvic nzeasuretnents on synthetic hematite slabs with 0.01 to 0.90 at. pet Ti and with 0.30 at. pet Ca were made. Additions of titanium and of calcium both increased the electronic conductivity with titanium yielding greater n-type behavior and calciurn p-type behavior. Reduction studies of hematite to magnetite in CO-CO2 atmospheres between 600° and 900°C initially exhibited linear kinetics. These linear rates were increased by additions of titanium and decreased by calcium. IN recent years many studies have been reported in the literature on the kinetics of the reduction of hematite and magnetite to iron. In addition, Hansen and Josephl and Schenck and Schultz2 have reported studies on the reduction of hematite to magnetite, the first step in total reduction to iron. In order to evaluate the results of the studies of over-all reduction in terms of the actual mechanism of the reaction and to define further the important factors in the rate- controlling mechanism of the magnetic roasting reaction, the following experiments were undertaken. Specimens of undoped hematite and hematite containing titanium or calcium in solution as doping agents were reduced to magnetite in CO-CO2 mixtures. In addition, electrical-conductivity measurements were correlated with the reduction kinetics using concepts of defect solid-state chemistry. EXPERIMENTAL Fisher certified Fe2O3 powder was used to make specimens for both the electrical and kinetic studies (see Table I for analysis). Doping with titanium and calcium was accomplished by adding TiO2 and CaO powders to the Fe2O3 powder. The powders were mixed in a Waring blender for minimum times of 1/2 hr. Satisfactory blending was achieved based on comparison of analyses of individual specimens af- ter reduction. The specimens were formed in a steel die using opposed punches with a rectangular opening 10.0 by 40.0 mm. The Fe2O3-TiO, platelets were pressed cold at 16,000 psi. They were sintered for approximately 16 hr at 1075°C in air, in accordance with information in the literature3, 4 on the time and temperature needed to obtain solution of the titanium in the hematite. The Fe2O3-CaO mixtures were first cold-pressed at 20,000 psi and sintered for 3 hr at 1225°C to insure solution of CaO. This material was then ground to -325 mesh in a 6-in. ball mill and the resulting powder was used to make platelets in the same manner as above. The sintered platelets were usually between 1/16 and 1/8 in. thick. They were ground on a carborundum wheel and polished on 2/0 paper. Typical dimensions of the kinetic-study specimens were 1.6 by 0.8 by 0.05 cm, and a typical weight was 0.3 g. Conductivity and thermoelectric specimens were approximately the same size, but were subjected to further sintering in order to ensure maximum densification. Finally, all specimens were measured to the nearest 0.0005 in. and weighed on a Mettler H-15 balance to the nearest 0.0001 g and the density calculated. The average density of the specimens used for the reduction studies was 4.87 g per cc, or 7.1 pet total porosity. The standard deviation ranged from 0.14 to 0.063 g per cc within a composition group. In the present study, the apparent surface area as measured with a micrometer was taken as the true surface area. The chemical analyses for calcium and for titanium within a group showed maximum variations of 50.04 pet from the average values used in Figs. 9 and 11. The plastic flow characteristics of clay water suspensions were first recognized by Binghaml in 1916 and further studied by Ambrose and Loomis' in 1931-1932. Many physical and chemical properties of clay suspensions are deeply influenced by particle size distribution as well as by the exchange cation. Separation of a number of fractions is particularly helpful in making a detailed study of a suspension. A limited amount of work has been conducted on the effects of particle size on specific properties of mud drilling fluids. A knowledge of particle size distribution is essential for a better understanding of fundamental properties of clay suspensions, particularly viscosity and gel strength. The purpose of this investigation was to study the effect of particle size on the viscosity and gel properties of clay suspensions and to determine any changes in mineral composition accompanying variation in size. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Numerous methods may be used to fractionate a poly-dispersed clay suspension into nearly mono-dispersed systems. Particles larger than 44 micron (325-mesh) may be obtained by wet screening. For sizes from 44 to 1 micron, the fractionation may be accomplished by sedimentation, elutriation plus microscopy,' or turbidimetry.6 When dealing with systems which contain a major portion of particles below l-mi-cron size, slit ultramicroscopy,7 centrifuge methods of Svedberg,5 eams,9 and McBain,l0 and X-ray methods" may be employed. The Sharples super centrifuge has been proved suitable for the economical separation of suspended particles of submicron range.12,13,14 Three-hundred and forty-five gal of 1 per cent by weight Aquagel suspension was mixed in a high-speed 5-gallon mud mixer and the suspension was allowed to stand in 5-gal glass bottles for 30 days to assure full hydration. All particles larger than 44 microns were removed by wet screening. Five fractions in the range of 44 to 1 micron were obtained by sedimentation. The Sharples super centrifuge method described by Hauser and Reed.13 Norton and Speil,14 Ha user and Lynn,15 and Hauser and Schachman,10 as employed to yield five fractions of submicron size. A super centrifuge operation chart prepared by Fancher, Oliphant, and Houssierre12 was used to determine operating conditions for the desired particle ranges. The clay suspension, after removal of all material above 1-micron size, was centrifuged. During rotation of the bowl, the particles were deposited on a thin plastic liner which fit closely inside the bowl. After passing 5 gal of suspension through the centrifuge, the liner was removed and the particles on the liner were scraped off, remixed and recentrifuged. This was repeated five times. Thus, Fractions H, I, K, and L were obtained. The finest fraction, M, remained in an approximately 0.4 per cent suspension. Water was evaporated under reduced pressure from this suspension to yield the finest particles. Results of the fractionation are included in Table 1. In order to achieve proper orientation and humidity conditions for X-ray diffraction analysis, the following procedure was employed. The dilute suspensions were placed on glass slides and allowed to dry at room temperature. This was repeated several times. Previous to measurement each sample first was placed in a water desiccator for half an hour and then allowed to stand for 15 minutes at room temperature. thus yielding an equilibrium condition of about 52 per cent relative humidity. The relative humidity of the room in which the X-ray diffraction was carried out was maintained at approximately 50 per cent so that there was no change in the spacings during the X-ray examination. The pneumatic rock drill operates essentially as a crusher. The rock is shattered into a powder that is removed from the drill hole by the air stream introduced through the hollow drill steel. Particles thus produced vary in size from 1/4 in. or larger down to diameters too small to be revealed by the ordinary microscope. The power consumed by the drill is proportional to the new surface area of the powdered material, therefore the greater the proportion of "dost" produced, the higher the power consumption and the lower the drilling speed. A considerable amount of material ejected from the hole settles on the rock and much of this falls back as the mound builds up to be crushed further before it is removed again. The cushion of dust at the bottom of the hole reduces the effectiveness of the blow of the bit and thus lowers the rate of drilling. The unfavorable working conditions created by the dust also reduce the drilling speed by lowering the efficiency of the operator. Thus, the dust produced by rock drills constitutes a serious drawback to economical performance on all drilling operations. To the economic objections, one must add the more important objection to the health hazard created when the dust contains free silica (quartz). The silicosis problem is a familiar one in many mines, tunnels, and other underground operations as well as in quarries and other types of open rock excavation. Dust is a necessary end product of all pneumatic drilling operations. Its production cannot be eliminated although the proportion of microscopic particles can be reduced by using improved drill steel, proper methods of sharpening, more efficient drills, etc.—improvements that increase the drilling speed largely by increasing the size of the cuttings. The absolute improvement secured in this way is not great, however, and the pneumatic drill must always remain a dust-producing machine. Definite benefits do result, on the other hand, from the use of dust-control equipment that captures the dust as it emerges from the hole and conveys it to a remote point of discharge. The differentiation of oxidized forms of lead from lead sulphide in complex products by chemical analysis is of considerable importance to certain mining and metallurgical companies. A method for the separation of "oxide" lead, (non-sulphide), from sulphide lead, based on the solubility of the former and virtual insolubility of the latter in concentrated ammonium acetate solution, has been employed for many years in the industry.1,2 Unfortunately this solvent, while satisfactory for lead sulphate and carbonate, is without action on lead phosphates or vanadates, with the result that at .Rhodesia Broken Hill Development Co. where these latter minerals are present, they have counted as sulphides when using this procedure. For the control of operations in the new concentrator it became necessary to have a closer check on sulphide lead than could be obtained by the only current method of differentiating this constituent from oxidized lead. For some time this problem has engaged our attention, and after a large number of solvents had been tried, the following procedure was evolved. Like all methods depending on selective solution in a com- plex material, it will not give 100 pct separation into oxide and sulphide portions. Because of the ease of oxidation of galena this is almost an impossibility. Our procedure will, however, give a recovery of 99-100 pct of the oxidized lead, contaminated with very small quantities of lead sulphide, and a corresponding recovery of 97-98 pct of the sulphide lead. The procedure is simple and reproducible, and gives results quite .satisfactory for routine control purposes. Experimental For this work standard samples of the following pure lead minerals were obtained from Broken Hill, Northern Rhodesia. These were hand-picked specimens, and were carefully ground to —200 mesh. Since it was realized that a fair-sized sample would be necessary for this work to thoroughly test the large number of procedures we had in mind, a compromise had to be effected between a few grams of very pure minerals and a large sample of lower grade material. For this work the presence of gangue was not deleterious, so long as the oxide lead minerals did not contain lead sulphide, and vice versa. Table I shows the lead minerals used, and their total lead content, both theoretical and actual. Apart from the pyro-morphite the minerals are seen by analysis to be quite pure. The results of potential measurements between 1) a titaniurn electrode in NaCl-TiCl, melts and a graphite-cizlorine reference electrode and 2) a titanium electrode in NaC1-Nu "melts and a graphite-chlorine reference electrode show that the following relationship expresses the equilibrium relationship between the TiCl, and the dissolved metallic sodium concentrations, expressed in mole fraction units, in dilute NaCl welts at 850°C. The results of potential measurenments between a graphite electrode in NaCl-TiCl, melts that were saturated with TiCl, and a graphite-chlorine reference electrode, when combined with the standard free energy data given in literature, gave the following expression for the equilibrium relationship between the TiCl, and TiCl, concentrations, expressed in mole fraction units, in dilute NaCl melts at 850°C. These relationships are for melts in equilibrium with pure titanium. In impure systems, less sodiurn and more TiCI, can be copresent with a given concentration of TiCl,. AFTER 10 years of existence, the titanium metal industry still relies on the original Kroll and the sodium reduction processes for the only important means of converting titanium-bearing ores to titanium metal via production of titanium tetrachloride as an intermediate. Through years of modification and development these two processes have evolved to a point where any further major economic advances in the field of titanium metal production must be achieved through implementation of processes which are distinct departures from simple magnesium or sodium reduction of titanium tetrachloride. Concurrently with the refinement of the Kroll and sodium reduction processes, industries and government have sponsored research and development in the field of producing titanium by electrolysis of oxides,' carbides,' and halides3'4 in fused salt media. However, the incomplete understanding of the physical chemistry of fused salt systems has in many cases hindered the development of promising new titanium production processes to the point where they will have a clear advantage over the processes presently employed. Fortunately the volume of information on fused salt physical and electrochemistry is increasing at an accelerating pace. The first approaches tbward investigating the electrochemical behavior of fused salt systems have been the measurements of equilibrium potentials of metals immersed in melts containing their halides.' Some work on the kinetics of fused salt electrochemical processes has been reported.'09" Some descriptions of the structural composition of fused salt systems are also available. The work described herein is a continuation of the study of metal electrode potentials in fused salts. Specifically, this contribution to the growing store of fused salt chemistry information presents a description of the equilibrium relationships between the concentrations of titanium dichloride, titanium trichloride, and metallic sodium in fused sodium chloride. The investigation of the titanium dichloride-titanium trichloride equilibrium relationships is not completely new. Kellog and Krye and Melgren and opie15 have presented the results of chemical analysis of salts containing titanium chlorides. Flengas and lngrahaml' have published the results of an investigation of these equilibrium relationships obtained by measurement of electrode potentials in a fused NaCl-KC1 mixture. The investigation described herein differed from that of Flengas and Ingraham principally in the use of straight NaCl as the solvent in place of the more costly and more difficult to purify mixture. This investigation was conducted in three parts. First, the equilibrium potentials of titanium in sodium chloride containing known concentrations of titanium dichloride were measured. A graphite-chlorine electrode was employed as reference. Second, the equilibrium potentials of titanium immersed in sodium chloride containing known concentrations of elemental sodium were measured. Third, the equilibrium potentials of graphite immersed in titanium tetrachloride-saturated sodium chloride containing known concentrations of titanium trichloride were measured. The results of these three related investigations are presented in the above order. The results are combined with the thermodynamic properties of titanium chlorides and sodium chloride, obtained from literature, to give the titanium dichloride-titanium trichloride-elemental sodium equilibrium concentration relationships. The shapes and positions of X-ray reflections from specimens of copper, steel, and aluminum alloy haue been examined in the elastic and plastic ranges both while the specimen was under stress and in the unloaded condition. For the aluminum alloy the shape was unaltered by the application of stress either within the elastic limit or in the plastic range provided that no additional plastic strain was induced. In copper the broadening accompanying plastic deformation was very slightly reduced when the specimen was unloaded. A similay but more marked elastic component of broadening was also found for steel, but in this case below the yield stress. Line profiles corrected for instrumental and particle-size broadening indicate very large internal stresses in local regions of the plastically deformed metals. The results are discussed in terms of a recent suggestion that the heterogeneous dislocation distribution between the cells and their boundary walls plays a major role in the peak shifts and broadening of the X-ray reflections. STUDIES of the X-ray line profiles from strained polycrystalline aggregates concentrate usually on one or the other of two main parameters: a) the displacement of the peak of the intensity contour from its position for a strain-free aggregate, or b) the shape of the profile. From peak shifts data can be obtained either on the relation in both the elastic and plastic ranges between applied external stress and average lattice strains in a given (hkl) direction, or, alternatively, on the residual lattice strains which are present after a plastically deformed specimen is unloaded.' On the other hand, the shapes of the broadened profiles from cold-worked metals can be analyzed to separate the broadening produced by small particle size and by heterogeneous lattice strains.' In this paper the terms "size broadening" and "strain broadening'' are used in the general sense adopted by warren.' In the past, apart from two early qualitative observation, it has been customary to examine only the movements of the peaks of the profiles while the specimen is actually under load, since the line broadening induced by plastic strain remains after removal of the external stress. Consideration of the implications of existing data of this type suggests, however, that fruitful additional information on a number of fundamental aspects might be gained by careful examination of whether the X-ray line profile is in fact different in the loaded and unloaded states of the specimen. By taking advantage of the sensitivity and convenience of modern diffractometer techniques it is possible to explore with relative ease the magnitude and importance of any elastic effects which may be superimposed upon the well-known permanent changes in profile. The main aim of the work to be described was thus to investigate this point for typical metals and alloys. For this purpose annealed specimens were extended first elastically and then plastically and the positions and shapes of X-ray reflections were recorded. Initially it was anticipated that prime interest would center on observations within the plastic range; it has been found, however, that small changes in profile sometimes occur both before and after the nominal elastic limit of the material is reached. It is shown that the results obtained have important implications in relation to the structural changes and processes associated with deformation. I) EXPERIMENTAL To enable the diffraction lines to be recorded while the specimen was under uniaxial-tensile stress, a small hydraulic testing machine was designed and constructed for direct attachment to the goniometer of a Philips diffractometer. The specimens, which were machined from 1/2-in.-diam rod and had a central rectangular section 3/8 by 1/16 in. over a gage length of 1 in., were held in the machine by split collets mounted in grooves in the cylindrical ends of each specimen. No special precautions were taken to ensure precise axiality of loading. Constant oil pressure was maintained by a lever and weights system and transmitted to the loading rig by flexible pipe. The actual load on the specimen was measured by a load cell in the machine to an accuracy of * 1 pct. To enable smooth X-ray profiles to be obtained the specimen and machine were oscillated continuously during recording through *7-1/2 deg about the normal half-angle position of the goniometer. The three materials chosen for the investigations were high-purity copper as representative of a ductile fcc metal, a low-carbon steel for a bcc metal, and an aluminum alloy as a material in which the proof stress/ultimate strength ratio is high. The year 1927 witnessed numerous developments of significance in California. The State's shut-in production increased from an average of 58,000 bbl. daily in January to a maximum of 93,000 bbl. daily in August, and a total of about 25,000,000 bbl. was withheld from the market during the year. This not only lessened the effect of large production at Hunt-ington Beach, Seal Beach and Alamitos Heights, but also was a most effective conservation move. Since 1922, it is estimated that approximately 100,000,000 bbl. of oil that would otherwise have been produced have been held in the ground. I. Outstanding Field Developments of 19271 1.
