Sixteen executives, technicians and operative personnel from the French mining industry, now touring mining operations in the U.S., will wind up their visit to this country at the AIME Annual Meeting. Traveling under ECA auspices, they will be in Denver on Feb. 5, Salt Lake City, Feb. 8 to 13, Bonne Terre on Feb. 16. Four of the group are engaged in bauxite mining, nine in lead and zinc, two in pyrites mining. All are interested in American mining equipment and methods, and hope to contact manufacturers' representatives in the various areas they visit. A $600,000 manganese pilot plant is expected to be put into operation by Sept. 1, by the Bureau of Mines at Boulder City, Nev. S. R. Zimmerly, chief of the Bureau's metallurgical div. for the region, recently completed the mill design and flow sheet; and the Bureau is awaiting steel priorities before building. Ore from the Artillery Peak area, 60 miles south-west of Kingman, Ariz., will be used in the mill. Construction will be handled by Rex Lloyd of Boulder City.

Rates of oxidation were studied for levitation-melted samples of Fe-C, Fe-Si, Fe-C-Si, Fe-C-P, Fe-C-Mn, and Fe-C-S alloys oxidized by mixtures of either 5 or 10 pct O2, in helium at several temperatures in the range 1850o to 2050°C. The concentrations of the oxidized elements decreased linearly with time. Mass transport in the gas phase was found to be the rate-controlling step. Ilowever, a mulliple -film model was necessary to account for the flux of iron and manganese vapor counter to the oxygen flow. THE advent of the basic oxygen and spray-refining processes of steelmaking has generated considerable interest in the kinetics of reactions between oxygen-bearing gases and liquid iron alloys. The object of this research was the determination of the role of mass transport in the gas and metal phases and of surface chemical reactions in the overall oxidation process. Of the reactions for elimination of elements dissolved in liquid iron, the oxidation of carbon has been investigated most extensively. Studies by Fuji and Ura,1 Fuji,' and Gunji et a1.,3 done with pilot-scale basic oxygen furnaces, indicated that mass transport of gaseous oxygen was rate controlling when the metal carbon content was greater than 0.15 to 0.30 pct. When the carbon content was less than this critical amount, diffusion of carbon dissolved in the iron was thought to be rate limiting. L. A. Baker et a1.4,5 levitated samples of iron-carbon alloys and oxidized them in CO-CO2, CO-C02-He, and O2-He atmospheres at 1660°C. These investigators found that the metal carbon concentration decreased linearly with time and their samples exploded when the carbon content fell below about 0.8 pct. They concluded that the rate-limiting step was the transfer of oxidant to the gas-metal interface. A model based on this rate-limiting step predicted decarburization rates within a factor of two of those experimentally observed. The explosion of the samples was attributed to a shift in rate-controlling step from gas-phase mass transport to transport of carbon dissolved in the metal. L. A. Baker and R. G. ward6 and R. Baker7 used freely falling droplets to investigate oxidation kinetics. In both papers, the authors speculated that flame fronts may have been partially responsible for the lack of better agreement between experiment and theory. Swisher and Turkdogan8 oxidized liquid iron having an initial carbon content of 0.97 pct with CO-CO2 and CO-C02-Ar mixtures at 1580°C. They concluded that a surface reaction was the rate controlling step. Iron-silicon alloys have been oxidized by R. Baker7 and Filipov and Martynov.9 R. Baker 7 also studied iron-carbon-silicon alloys falling as liquid droplets through oxygen. He found that the rate of both carbon and silicon oxidation varied inversely with the drop radius. When the initial silicon concentration was greater than 6 pct, the samples cooled during their fall. Manganese oxidation has been studied by R. Baker,7 and by Filipov and Martynov.9 ward10 investigated the loss of manganese from liquid iron under vacuum. He found that mass transport of manganese vapor was rate limiting in argon atmospheres of 0.02 torr to 700 torr pressure. Iron-sulfur alloys were desulfurized with H2-He and H2-Ar mixtures by Peters et al.11 A model based on the transport of H2S from the gas-metal interface into the bulk gas gave fair agreement between the predictions of the model and the experimental results. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE Essentially, the technique consisted of using helium-oxygen gas mixtures to oxidize levitated samples of liquid binary and ternary iron-base alloys. Last year the authors presented a paper that discussed the various electrical measurements they perform in drill holes, which they name "electrical coring."' The object of the present paper is to give a brief account of the points of scientific interest that have been elucidated by further field work and laboratory research, as well as the economic results that have been attained recently. The practical examples given in this paper are drawn, for the most part, from the field work performed in Russian oil fields during the years 1931 and 1932. This is due to the fact that, thanks to the comprehensive cooperation of the Russian geologists and scientists, the authors are allowed to make public a large amount of recant information. In other countries in which the authors are engaged in similar work, the competition between private companies makes it imperative, for a considerable lapse of time, to avoid publication of the results obtained. The following points will be discussed successively, under separate headings: 1. Electrochemical phenomena in drill holes. 2. Stratigraphic correlations and tectonic studies. 3. Relations' between the productivity of oil horizons and their electrical resistivity. 4. Location of coal seams. 5. Summary and conclusions. At a time when mill availability is at a premium, production costs are rising, and lead time for mill liner casting is a year or more, mill liner design is an important factor in ore grinding. Testing and selection of the optimum liner profile for a given set of mill operating conditions can improve mill capacity, reduce liner wear rate, and lengthen liner life. The mill liner that grinds best, lasts the longest, and costs the least is a necessity for economic mill operation. After testing four mill liner profiles for 3.96 X 3.65-m (13 x 12-ft) overflow ball mills, Climax Molybdenum Co. found that an improved design increased mill tonnage by 2.72 t/h (3 stph) while reducing finish grind by 1.7% minus 100-mesh, reduced liner wear rate, and almost doubled liner life.

0. R. LYONS*—I know that we are all interested in hearing about problems that other people have. To most of the people from the eastern part of the United States, this kind of coal preparation is completely different. It represents washing difficulties that most operators have never experienced, or, if they have, they have refused to consider them because there are coals that are much easier to wash and, therefore. they leave the more difficult ones alone for the time being. E. R. McMILLAN†—I think the au-thors have summarized the material very well. Dr. Yancey has spent a great many years in the study of washing coals, as has Mr. Geer. I might comment briefly on some of the plants that were mentioned, plants with which I have had some con-nection, particularly those of our own company, the Northwestern Improve-ment Co. I would like to point out this: that ill each case, a great deal of work was done in the way of preliminary studies of washability of the coal before plants were built. The first plant of any size built in Roslyn field was mentioned in the paper. This central cleaning plant was designed and built to handle coal from three different mines. I might say that prior to 1935, the year in which the plant was built, the coal was used largely as railway fuel, close to a million tons annually. But as mining increased in depth, it became increasingly difficult to separate and gob much of the impurities underground, with the result that the run-of-mine coal became so high in ash that the railroad eventually was forced to consider installing some kind of preparation plant at the mine. We spent about a year in preliminary studies in cooperation with the Bureau of Mines to find out the best type of plant that would clean the coal. The result, as Mr. Geer has explained to you, is a rather complicated plant, but it is doing a very satisfactory job. We have, however, made a number of changes and improve-n~euts since it was first built. The last addition was the, installation of a cen- trifugal drier to dewater the minus ¼ in. size. We are now contemplating installing heat driers for further drying of minus ¼ in. We use Vissac heat driers for drying the stoker coal, the ¾ to in. The demand for drier coal, for both railway and industrial use, is forcing us to further drying of the coal. The plant that was mentioned as having been built in Pierce County, during the war, was a government sponsored plant. I happen to have had some connection with its design, construction and initial operation. We did what we thought then, and still think, was a very thorough job of preliminary studies in cooperation with the Burea of Mines of the coal from that field. The plant was as good a plant as could be built with the equipment available at that time, 1943. The plant that was mentioned as having been built at Ravensdale for treating the McKay coal was rebuilt about two years ago, and in addition to the modified Elmore jig washer that was mentioned. we added a coucentrating table for re-cleaning the minus 3/32 in. Polynomial functions of temperature were obtained for the specific heats, thermal diffusivities, and thermal conductivities of zirconium hydrides containing 4 at. pct U. Three hydrides (H/Zr atom ratios of 1.58, 1.65, and 1.70) were studied over the range a" to 900°C and a fourth (H/Zr = 1.81) was studied over the range 0° to 760°C. The specific heats were determined from enthalpy measurements which were obtained using a unique drop calorimeter specifically designed for use with materials in which high temperature phase transitions and/or high dissociation pressures occur. Thermal diffusivities were measured by the flash method using a pulsed laser. The thermal conductiuities were obtained as the product of specific heat, thermal diffusivity, and density. The specific heats agree, within 10 pct, with values derived using a theoretical model in which the hydrogen and zirconium atoms are treated as Einstein and Debye oscillators, respectively. RELIABLE values of the thermophysical properties of the fuel are required to predict the operating temperatures and temperature response of SNAP nuclear reactors. Among the most important of these properties are the thermal conductivity, specific heat, and thermal diffusivity. A considerable number of investigations1-4 have been made of these properties for the Zr-H and Zr-H-U systems.* However, little of the drides, however, this direct method cannot yield meaningful results, since the hydrogen will redistribute under the influence of the thermal gradient, thus forming a concentration gradient; hence, one has a spectrum of compositions, rather than a homogenous alloy. Although the "average" composition of the material may be identical to the initial uniform concentration, the directly measured value of conductivity will be dependent on the thickness of the specimen, due to the highly sensitive dependence of transport properties on hydrogen content. This dependence is strikingly illustrated by the work of Bickel,5 who found that the electrical conduction of zirconium hydrides ranges from primarily hole conduction to primarily electronic conduction, depending upon the hydrogen content. Fortunately, the direct measurement of thermal conductivity is unnecessary, since it can be expressed as the product of the specific heat, thermal diffusivity, and density, all of which can be directly measured with considerable accuracy. EXPERIMENTAL Specimen Preparation. The combined fuel-moderator material used in SNAP reactors is a hydrided zirconium-uranium alloy containing -10 wt pct U. The alloy used in this work was representative of that used in nuclear reactors except that normal uranium was substituted for the enriched uranium required for reactor usage. It was produced by a triple-arc-melt and double-extrusion process. All specimens were prepared from a single cylindrical extrusion which contained 10.30 pet U, 89,35 pct Zr, and 0.35 pct impurities, The specimens for each composition were hydrided simultaneously with ultrapure hydrogen (10 ppm total impurities) using standard fuel production techniques which routinely yield homogeneous, crack-free fuel with negligible increases in the impurity levels. The hydrogen content of each specimen was determined from its weight gain and the density was measured by liquid displacement, Chemical analyses yielded hydrogen concentrations which agreed with the weight gain data within ±0.02 in H/Zr atom ratio) the concentrations of all other elements agreed almost exactly with the initial values after adjustment for the added hydrogen. The specimens used for the determination of specific heat were centerless ground to 2.00 cm diam after hydriding. A thin slice was carefully removed From each end for metallographic examination. In every case, this examination revealed a uniform structure as evidenced by the appearance and distribution of the two phases present in the fuel at the hydrogen concentrations used. The economical recovery of the valuable constituents from the effluent of gas-con-densate wells has developed into a problem of balancing the cost of recovery against the cost of compressing the residual gas back into the formation. A possible method of extracting the gasoline and distillate from the natural gas is by oil absorption at high pressures. In order to design and evaluate an absorption plant, fundamental data on the composition of the coexisting hydro- carbon vapor and liquid phases at various temperatures and pressures are essential. A review of the literature indicated that the necessary data for the design of such plants are lacking. The nearest approach to desired published data is that of Katz and Hackmuth,~ who experimentally deter-mined the composition of the coexisting vapor and liquid phases in a natural gas-crude oil system at pressures up to 3000 lb. per sq. in. and at temperatures from 40' to zoo°F. This paper presents the results of the experimental determination of the equilib-rium distribution of the hydrocarbons methane through hexane between natural gas and a typical absorber oil. The ranges of temperature and pressure chosen were from 33' to r8oUF. and from 100 to 5000 lb. per sq. inch. Materials The absorber oil was a typical naturally occurring, Straw-colored distillate that had previously been steam-distilled to an initial boiling point of 300 F. The physical and chemical properties, including the results of an Engler distillation, are presented in Table I. The propane, isobutane, wbu-tane, isopentane and n-pentane were ob-ta,ined from the Philgas Department of the Phillips Petroleum Co. Certified analyses of these compounds showed their purity to be in excess of 99.5 per cent and they were riot further purified.

Understanding of the diffusion problem has recently been furthered by the analysis of Birchenall and Meh1.l They pursued the problem of the variation of the diffusion coefficient with composition for non-ideal solid solutions. Their analysis follows the tradition of Wagner,l Jost, Dehlinger, and Darken & who assumed the net flux of diffusing material to be proportional to the gradient of a quantity related to free energy. The basic assumption in Birchenall and Mehl's formulation of the problem is that the net flux of diffusing material is proportional to a thermodynamic activity gradient. To estimate the applicability of the derived relations, they corrected the diffusion coefficients of carbon in austenite by utilizing Smith's6 activity data for carbon, and the diffusion coefficients for zinc in copper with activity data computed from the vapor pressure measurements of Har-greaves.' The corrected coefficients for carbon were virtually independent of carbon concentration. For the diffusion of zinc in copper a moderate variation of diffusion coefficient with concentration remained after the correction. The problem of diffusion can be formulated in another way than that used by Birchenall and Mehl. The method is that of chemical rate theory and has been used by Eyring and his coworkers8,9 as well as by Eyring and Zwolinskilo in a discussion to Birchenall and Mehl's paper. As yet the method has not been applied to substitu-tional solid solutions. On the basis of their assumptions, Eyring and Zwolinski derived a relation between the diffusion coefficient and activity that is identical with that of Dehlinger and Darken but which does not correct for the variation of the diffusion coefficient with concentration as well as does the relation derived by Birchenall and Mehl. It was thought that the theory of diffusion would be more complete if the inconsistency between the two analyses could be rationalized and if diffusion in substitu-tional alloys were analyzed on the basis of the concepts of the chemical rate theory. THE GROUND now being worked by the Fairbanks Exploration Co., near Fairbanks, Alaska, has been known to be gold bearing since 1901. In the early days it was worked by drift mining and other small-scale methods. In 1922, Hammond started prospecting the gold-bearing ground and obtaining options on the properties desired. Two years later the present Fairbanks Exploration Co. started taking up the options, and preparing to exploit the ground. For the prospect drilling Keystone drills were used, with holes at the points of equilateral triangles 600 ft. apart. Holes were also put down more closely spaced to determine the limits of dredging ground. In the first drilling casing was used to the bottom of the holes, but in later work the casing was put down only to the bottom of the thawed ground, and the rest of the hole put down without casing. The gold content was determined by panning, each 2 ft. of depth being determined separately. Where no casing was used the size of the hole was determined by using water to measure its volume. The greatest concentration of gold occurs at or near bedrock. All the gold-bearing streams head in one big dome. Gold, however, is not found clear to the head of the creeks, the pay being first found some distance downstream from the head.

A new expendable shaped charge perforator has been developed in which the charges are run through the tubing in a vertical position and then opened out to a horizontal position when at the desired shooting zone. The performance of this new tool is comparable to that of conventional casing type perforators. This paper describes the new tool and its applications. Performance data in targets rind under various actual well conditions are presented. INTRODUCTION The general acceptance and increasing use of pernianent-type well completion by the oil industry has indicated the need for through-tubing perforating equipment with performance comparable to that of conventional casing type perforators.'.' To achieve the performance desired, a new, expendable, shaped charge perforator has been developed with adequate power for effectively perforating both 51/2-in. and 7-in. casing below tubing. This has been accomplished without resulting severe damage to the casing and can he obtained under extremes of pressure and temperature. The design of this new tool is a radical departure from previous concepts of tubing guns since it was felt that the two major limitations imposed by previous designs severely handicapped performance. The first of these limitations was the restriction imposed upon the length of the charges by the necessary small inside diameter of the carrier. This resulted from the necessity for compromises in designing a hermetically sealed gun small enough to allow free passage through 2-in. tubing, yet with sufficient wall thickness to withstand some minimum pressure. In an effort to overcome this limitation, the charges were in some cases placed at an angle with the axis of the well with resulting loss in effective depth of penetration. The second limitation concerned the extreme distance of the charges from the casing when the gun was fired. An example of the latter situation is demonstrated by the fact that a conventional 13/4-in. tubing gun centralized in 51/2-in., 17-lb casing has a clearance of more than 1-9/16-in. on all sides. This means that a considerable portion of the force from each charge must be expended in penetrating this 1-9/16-in. of well fluid before it even reaches the casing. With the gun centered in 7-in., 23-lb casing, the amount of fluid penetration required of each jet is in excess of 21/4-in. In a situation where the 13/4-in. gun is touching one side of the 51/2-in., 17-lb casing, the jets from the charges on the opposite side have more than 3%-in. of fluid to penetrate. A similar situation in 7-in., 23-lb casing necessitates the penetration of more than 4-9/16-in. of fluid. The penetrating effect of the charges is severely impaired in passing through so much fluid. Under such conditions, there is usually insufficient force left to penetrate the casing. Previous studies have shown the decided disadvantage of having to shoot through such an excessive quantity of well fluid.'.' The problem. then, was how to position large powerful charges close to the casing prior to firing and still manage free passage through 2-in, tubing. The solution appeared to be in some method of folding sealed charge units in an open type, expendable. 13/4-in. carrier for travel through the tubing, and unfolding them upon their arrival at the shooting zone in the casing.
