VERTICAL-INTENSITY magnetometers, such as the Hotchkiss Superdip and the Askania vertical field balance, are now [ ] widely used, because vertical-intensity charts give definite information for the location of upper pole, dip and strike, and approximate shape of the deposit. Again, a slow and steady increase of dip over a large area indicates a large deep-lying deposit, while a large dip limited to a small area and falling away rapidly suggests a small and shallow one. The complication comes more from the richness of the ore. A large body of lean ore near the surface might produce the same vertical-intensity chart as a rich ore at depth. This paper presents a method for calculating the maximum depth of a single-pole deposit and another for a two-pole mineral body, by utilizing data of both vertical and horizontal intensities as obtained by a Thalen-Tiberg magnetometer. As shown on the left side of Fig. 1, lean ore, rich ore and a single pole produce the same magnetic field. The depth of the pole, [ ] h, can be calculated from the following relation: [h=a=tan¢=G-F h=aXFy] where G is the vertical intensity at point A due to the pole; F, the horizontal intensity of the same; and a, the distance from the point of maximum vertical intensity or the vertical projection of the pole on the surface to the point of observation A. If an entirely covered deposit is indicated by magnetic measurements and boring cost estimated from the calculated depth is so reasonable as to encourage drilling, the ore should be struck somewhere within the limit of the calculated depth by the borehole. A number of such points as A should be taken for calculation, erratic results should be rejected and the average figure used for cost estimation.

Recent economic and environmental setbacks have not slowed Occidental Oil Shale, Inc.'s program aimed at the commercialization of oil shale. In fact, the firm expects to have a 795 MI (500C) bbl) per day production unit working by the end of 1976. The key to Occidental's ambitious program is an in situ method that extracts the valuable oil by retorting the shale in place. The process will require practically no water and will leave the spent shale in place underground. Additionally, all plant operations are to be located within the mine. These factors thus serve to make the operation attractive from an environmental viewpoint, in contrast to proposed conventional schemes which call for extensive underground mining, crushing and grinding at the surface, and construction of a massive surface retorting facility.

THE orientation of metal crystals and grains, both large and small,. can be determined conveniently and accurately without the use of X-ray apparatus. This seems to be appreciated by so few metallurgists that it may be useful to explain in detail the method we have found most satis-factory in the laboratory the reflection of light from crystallographic etch pits. This note includes a description of a suitable inexpensive instrument and instructions for etching various metals and for plotting the data. As the stereographic projection is used to facilitate handling the data, this note may be considered as an appendix to an earlier review of the metallurgical uses of the stereographic projection.1 Various methods involving etch pits have been used by other investi-gators, Bridgman's method2 consists of attaching the specimen to a sphere (a transparent sphere is convenient4), holding it at arm's length, and marking a spot on it when it has been turned so that the etch pits reflect light into the eye of the observer from a lamp standing behind him. It has an accuracy of about 2° and is extremely rapid. A greater accuracy can be obtained by having the reflected light fall on a screen, as has been done by Czoehralski, 5 Chalmers,6 and Schubnikov.7 All of these methods have been intended for undeformed single crystals. Tammann and his coworkers"' developed a method for estimating the number of grains in a polycrystalline aggregate having orientations in a given region of the stereographic triangle and thus obtained statistical information about deformation and recrystallization textures. While the method has had some use in recent years,9 it is not applicable to the majority of problems in physical metallurgy. Phase equilibria in the Ti-Cr-Mo system have been investigated for alloys containing 100 to 40 pct Ti in the temperature range 550° to 1300°C. Five experimental isothermal sections and a surface of incipient melting are presented in addition to a summary projection of the space. Seven vertical sections have been constructed from the isothermal sections. A STUDY of the system Ti-Cr-Mo was undertaken as part of a program sponsored by Watertown Arsenal toward the development of titanium-base phase equilibrium diagrams of potential technical importance to alloy development. The scope of the investigation included the composition range contained by the titanium corner and the line of 64 pct Ti (all compositions are by weight) and the temperature range 550" to 1100°C. A surface of incipient melting was constructed from measurements on a large number of alloys. The system Ti-Cr has been established.&apos;-? The phase diagram is characterized by a wide miscibility field of the solid solution at elevated temperatures and a eutectoid reaction of the type: (15 pct Cr) + TiCr, (685C). The a solid solution has a very limited capacity for solution of chromium (< 0.5 pct Cr). The intermediate phase TiCr2 has at best a very narrow composition range. It has been shown that two allotropic modifications of this phase exist. However, this behavior does not appear to be perceptibly reflected in the form of phase boundaries of the type + TiCr,. In the system Ti-Mo,9-10 the phase is stabilized to successively lower temperatures with increasing molybdenum content. There are no known intermediate phases. The a solid solution is limited to less than 0.5 pct Mo. Because of the very extensive range of the phase, the ternary system was ideally suited to the determination of the phase boundaries by the parametric method of Andersen and Jette." A parametric surface was constructed to provide the necessary basis for the application of this method. Preparation and Treatment of Alloys More than 60 alloy compositions were prepared for the study of this system. Alloy buttons of 10 grams were arc-melted in a nonconsumable electrode furnace using inert atmosphere protection and a water-cooled copper crucible. The construction and operation of this type of melting unit have been adequately described elsewhere.&apos;&apos; To insure complete solution of alloy additions, the buttons were remelted alternately on top or bottom as many as five times. This was accomplished by a suitable mechanism for "flipping" over the ingots. Iodide titanium (99.97 pct Ti) was used as the alloy base. An especially high quality chromium (99.9 pct Cr) was obtained from the National Research Corp. Molybdenum sheet (0.005 in.) of 99.9 pct purity was used.

Financing the acquisition of a going coal mine operation has not had the exposure other finance-oriented projects have had. Therefore, C.I.T. feels that coal mining people and financial people should improve their understanding of the factors involved in this important type of acquisition. The discussion consists of two major subjects: analysis of the acquisition of the property, and sources and terms of funding the acquisition. Source and Terms of Funding There is a need to keep the competent medium-sized independent operator in the coal business, especially in these times of energy shortage. The creation of a resale market for coal mines encourages new investment in the coal mining business by medium-sized operators and their financial backers. Who provides debt and equity financing to acquire going coal mine operations and on what terms?

A treatment is given of the transient pressure behavior of a well located at the center of a circular region surrounded by a radial discontinuity. On either side of the discontinuity, the values of permeability, viscosity, compressibility and porosity are uniform but may be different from those on the other side of the discontinuity. The results are obtained by solving a pair of finite difference equations. The numerical solution to these equations is obtained using a digital computer. The results are compared with previously published, approximated analytical solutions to the same problem. Solutions, presented graphically, show pressure decline for constant rate fluid production. The range of variables studied include dimensionless time from &apos;0.001 to 100 and storage capacity ratio from 0.001 to 1,000. The well behaves as if it were in an infinite reservoir for dimensionless times less than 0.25. Reservoir properties near the well can be estimated in the usual manner. An overlay technique is used to match an experimental curve with one of the theoretical curves. It is possible to estimate the distance to a discontinuity by substituting the actual time t and the corresponding dimensionless time tD at which a match occurs into the equation a = (0.000264 tk1/tD , µ1 cI)I/2 where kI/ I µI cI is the diffusivity near the well, and may be estimated from data taken at early time. Several buildup curves are computed. These curves show that for early shut-in times, correct values for transmissibility are obtained from conventional analysis. However, erroneous values of static reservoir Pressure are obtained unless data at large shut-in times are taken. INTRODUCTION A mathematical treatment of the transient pressure response of a well located at the center of a region bounded by a circular discontinuity is given. Within a region (Fig. 20) the properties of both the rock and the fluid are considered to be constant on either side of the discontinuity. While these properties are considered constant, they may be different on opposite sides of the discontinuity. A discontinuity of this type could be a fluid-fluid contact or a sudden change in rock characteristics such as thickness, porosity or permeability. Analytical solutions to this problem are available. 1-3 However, they are so involved that they are of little practical use. An approximate solutionl is available but the range of times over which it is valid has not been specified. A numerical solution to a pair of finite difference equations is used to obtain the solution given in this paper. PREVIOUS WORK One of the first solutions to the problem was published by William Hurst.1 Hurst considered unsteady-state flow of fluids through two sands in series with different mobilities in each sand. He used Laplace transforms to obtain a solution for a single well located at the center of the circle enclosing the first of the two sands. THE existence of large saline deposits in that flat arid basin, known as the Great Salt Lake Desert, has long been recognized, but the extent and great commercial value of these deposits has not been generally appreciated. That a very considerable interest has recently developed is indicated by the fact that about 263 prospecting permits-each covering about 2560 acres of land in this Desert-have been issued under the Potash Leasing Act (Act of 0ct. 2, 1917-40 Stat. 297), and patents granted on approximately 40,000 acres. It is reported that patents and leases have, or will be applied for on an additional 80,000 acres in the basin. , Tests have been made on probably less than 10 per cent. of the total area of the basin, but these have proved a practically unlimited supply of brine available -sufficient, probably, to. furnish the potassium and magnesium chloride requirements of this country for at least a hundred years.

SUGGESTIONS that existing schools give instruction bearing on the mineral industry, or that schools for that purpose should be established in the United States, began to be made early, and it would require too much space to catalogue them all. Some of the more important may be mentioned to indicate their general character. In the "advertisement to such parents as have now (or expect to have) children prepared to be educated in the College of New York," which appeared in the New York Mercury of June 3, 1754, Samuel Johnson, the first president of King&apos;s College, the predecessor of Columbia, said that it was the "design of this college to instruct and perfect the youth," among other things, "in the arts of Numbering and Measuring of Surveying, and Navigation and Geography. . . . and in the Air, Water and Earth around us, and, the various kinds of Meteors, Stones, Mines and Minerals, Plants and Animals; and in the knowledge of all Nature in the Heavens above us, and of everything useful for the Comfort, Convenience and the Elegance of Life . . . " Though the concept that natural science should be used to enlarge the bounds of human life was thus implicit at Columbia from the very beginning (John Stevens graduated from it in 1768, James Renwick in 1807, Horatio Allen in 1823, and A. W. Craven in 1829), it was only during the period of Renwick&apos;s professorship of Natural and Experimental Philosophy and Chemistry (1820- 1853) that much attention was given to applied science.* Among the Austin papers, published by the American Historical Association,2 there is a draft in Stephen F. An evaluation has been made of the relative importance of yield strength (?) and stacking-fault energy (y) to the rate of fatigue-crack growth in materials of fcc structure. Pure copper and its solid-solution al-loys with aluminum and nickel were chosen for the study because they provided sufficient range in both quantities of interest that either could be varied independently of the other. Experiments involved alternating tension and compression of flat specimens which were prepared with sharpened internal notches so that most, if not all, of the crack-nucleation interval could be eliminated. Growth rate (dC/dN) was concluded to be proportional to the square of the plastic-strain amplitude (€,,) over a strain range of approximately 6x 10-4 to 6 x 10-3. The factor, k, linking dC/dN and ep in dC/dN = kEp2 increased and decreased with corresponding variations in y, but it did not respond syste?>/atically to change in ay, indicating that y is the significant variable in crack growth at constant plastic-strain amplitude. In polycrystalline material, k varied by a factor of 5 over the available range of y. In a few single-crystal experiments on Cu-A1 alloys the growth rate responded less strongly to change in y. It has been suggested that single crystals behave somewhat differently than poly crystalline material because there is more extetnsive substructure near the grain boundaries in the latter, and this facilitates crack advance by separation along subgrain boundaries. A point of some controversy in current work on fatigue relates to the effects of strength and stacking-fault energy on crack growth. In recent experiments a separation was made between the cycling intervals for crack nucleation and the subsequent growth that eventually ends a specimen&apos;s fatigue life.&apos; The study was carried out on Cu-A1 alloys primarily, fatigued in alternating four-point bending to constant deflection. A nucleation interval of about 10&apos; cycles (at a total strain amplitude = 0.2 pct) was found to be insensitive to aluminum content in the range 0 to 7.5 wt pct, while the growth period was increased approximately forty fold over the same compositional range. The increase was not in any sense linear, however. Rather, most of the change occurred below 4 pct A1 or a stacking-fault energy, ?, of about 15 ergs per sq cm. It was argued that the plastic-strain amplitude was approximately constant, and therefore the effect of composition must have grown out of the reduction in stacking-fault energy. Several studies have shown that, with high ?, cross slip is encouraged, subgrain structure is introduced during fatigue, and cracking is aided through propagation along subgrain boundaries.1-5 Therefore, lowering ? sufficiently to interfere with substructure formation would be expected to retard growth rate. On the other hand, it is a general rule that resistance to fatigue cracking increases as strength is raised. Accordingly, there might still have been some doubt that Y was the controlling variable, since strength would be increased as y was lowered by the aluminum additions. To help in dispelling that doubt, an experiment was made on a polycrystalline Cu-Ni alloy similar in strength to the Cu-A1 alloys but of higher ?; the crack-growth interval was found to be essentially that of pure copper.&apos; Further support for this position on stacking-fault energy as it relates to crack growth is derived from work by Boettner and McEvily,6 in which the actual crack-growth rate was measured on samples previously notched so as to minimize the nucleation period. Unfortunately, it was necessary in isolating strength level to compare different alloy systems and grain sizes. Recognizing the complication, it was still concluded that growth may be retarded by a reduction in y, per se. A related study has also been made by Roberson and Grosskreutz.7 The zinc content of a brass was systematically changed to alter strength and stack-ing-fault energy, although not below the 15 ergs per sq cm at which pronounced change in growth interval was found in the earlier work. The results were limited to more or less conventional S-N diagrams so that nucleation and growth events could not be separated. No definite conclusions were drawn, but

It is with a certain amount of trepidation that a man considers gathering his family of six, traveling across a continent, two oceans and a sea, and going to live in a foreign land. But "pioneering" is still possible, and a nation is "foreign" only until one has lived in it. We&apos;ve had eight years of pleasant experiences in South Africa on which to base that contention. It was in January 1938 that my brother first extolled the virtues of South Africa to us, and just three months and a thousand small problems later my wife, two daughters, three sons and I were boarding a ship in New York, bound for Cape- town. We arrived in May, and within a week had found a furnished home with beautiful lawns, tennis, court, a garden, and everything needed for family comfort. The children were soon located in school, and I settled down to the task of entering the importing business, as had been my original intention. The importing business started out slowly but was coming along nicely when on Sept. 3, 1939 the war started in Europe and a declaration of war by the Union of South Africa was made on the following day. With the declaration came import and export controls. In fact we were controlled completely out of business in one stroke. Liquidating the business, I went to Johannesburg intending to find work in one of the mines. Government health and safety regulations require that all underground mine employees have a red ticket from the Miners Phthisis Bureau certifying that they are not susceptible to silicosis, the scourge of the Witwatersrand gold mining industry. I made application to the Bureau, completed a form covering my whole past life, and was given a complete physical examination. The following day I was startled to find that I had not only been refused a red ticket but had been classified with a green ticket which for- ever bars one from working underground in any scheduled mine in the country, and all this in spite

THE education of adolescents to perform the duties and assume the responsibilities of maturity has been a characteristic of human society since the dawn of history. In the beginning the members of the immediate family performed this function, and in modern life they still have an important part in it. Possibly religion was the first field in which education began to be functional; young people were sent for instruction to a teacher who had a broader and deeper knowledge of the subject than was possessed by the family. It does not seem necessary for our purpose to attempt to determine how, when, or where instruction in the practical arts first&apos; began to become functional, and the brief outline which follows must suffice. The discovery and utilization of mineral substances to improve and maintain the conditions of human living is a practical art, which must have had an almost accidental origin and have been developed by empirical experiments. We do not know, nor would it be useful to try to fancy, how men first learned that they could make use .of mineral substances to their benefit, but how- ever that knowledge was initially gained it was certainly trans mitted through instruction in the family. At first such activities must have been merely a .minor part of the making of a-living, but in time those who excelled found it better to devote them-

Coal mine operators are obligated to mitigate or plan for subsidence under the new regulations. This paper presents the types of subsidence control measures that may be employed to meet these requirements, which include: changes in mining methods, strata stabilization after coal extraction, construction of specially designed surface structures and foundations to accommodate ground movements, and comprehensive planning and coordination of surface land use with underground mining. The basic principles of these techniques, along with specific procedures that may be followed to implement them, are briefly discussed. Subsidence control methods that are currently being investigated are mentioned.

During recent months, the acute shortage of steel scrap has necessitated the use of higher percentages of hot metal in the open-hearth charge. With these higher percentages, the sulphur content of hot metal has become an increasingly important factor in the control of the quality of steel. Thus, the blast-furnace operator is faced with a demand not only for more output but for a higher quality of product. More than go per cent of the sulphur charged into the blast furnace is contained in the coke. With the tremendously increased demand, the trend of coke quality has been toward higher sulphur, higher and more variable ash, and poorer physical characteristics. This has been brought about by less selective coal mining, increased production rates in coke plants and resumption of operations of many beehive ovens. In a single month last year, one blast-furnace plant in the Pittsburgh district operated with coke obtained from 52 sources. The effect of variability and quantity of coke ash on blast-furnace operation is well known. The improved results obtained with furnaces operating on coke made from washed coals compared with results on coke made from raw coals is ample proof of the effectiveness of low and uniform ash. Coal-washing plants, however, require a large capital expenditure, and are impractical for most of the large number of small producers, whose operations are confined chiefly to periods of abnormally high demand. Furthermore, not all coals are physically adaptable to washing. Principles 01 Iron Desulphurization in Furnace Although investigations of the blastfurnace process have not clearly revealed the detailed mechanism of iron desulphuri-zation within the furnace, they have been sufficiently extensive to permit a postula tion of the following general principles: 1. Iron, in its travel from furnace top to hearth, continues to pick up sulphur until it has reached tuyere level. The zone of iron desulphurizatioil is relatively narrow, being confined to a vertical distance extending zapproximately from tuyere level to the iron-slag interface in the hearth.&apos; 2. Combustion of coke is confined to spherical zones extending approximately 40 in. from the nose of each tuyere.= Coke ash is released as the coke bums in these combustion areas. 3. With a constant amount of sulphur in the charge, the sulphur content of the metal product is a function of hearth temperature, final slag analysis, slag viscosity, and slag volume. Both hearth temperature and slag analysis affect slag viscosity. For a slag of constant analysis, viscosity always decreases with an increase in temperature;

The visitors to the October meeting will be given opportunity to visit the coal fields in Illinois, adjacent to St. Louis, the steam-shovel operations near Pittsburgh, Kan., and the Oklahoma oil fields. The coal mines of Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma and Arkansas furnish fuel over all of the central region of the country. Especially at this time, this district is of importance because of the necessity of producing enormous quantities to meet the country&apos;s demand. Some of the mines produce as much as 5,500 tons in 8 hr., and. the total output of Illinois, alone, in 1916, was 63,000,000 tons. Visitors may see elaborate underground electric tram systems, large underground machine repair shops, surface plants equipped for rapid loading, and some of the most modern coal-washing installations. The conditions for mining here are somewhat simpler than in the east.

For over 200 years meerschaum has been a significant item of trade between the Near East and countries to the west. Best-known for its use in making smoking pipes and cigar and cigarette holders, it is also used in making a variety of decorative and ornamental items. It is easily carved, and is given an attractive, lustrous finish by rubbing. No published specifications are known, but compact form, purity, uniform whiteness or light color, and uniform, porous texture appear to be requisites. Fig. I a shows the appearance of a piece of crude meerschaum from Turkey; Fig. lb a carved item; and Fig. lc, d, and e show the fibrous and porous texture as revealed by the scanning electron microscope. Neither a major industrial mineral nor a precious stone, meerschaum nevertheless holds a record of long-and continuing-association with art and personal affairs of man. It is also a mineral to which modem methods of exploration and production probably could be profitably applied. An interesting account of the preparation and use of meerschaum in the early part of this century is given by Sterrett (1907). Geology and Mining Mineralogy Meerschaum is recognized now to be the compact variety of sepiolite, the claylike variety of which is one of the minerals included in the chapter on clays. The word meerschaum, from the German meaning "sea foam," was in earlier times used synonymously with sepiolite, a word of Greek origin suggestive of the resemblance of the compact variety-then the only variety known-to cuttlefish bone. At one time meerschaum was used as the commercial name, and sepiolite for the scientific name. However, to think of meerschaum as the name by which sepiolite is known commercially is no longer valid, in view of the recent emergence of the earthy variety as a competitor of bentonite and other clay materials. Present tendency is to restrict the term meerschaum to the compact variety, and to use the term sepiolite as a more general name to include both the compact and earthy varieties. This is the terminology followed in this publication. Meerschaum typically is white to light gray, has a hardness of 2 to 2 ½ , conchoidal to irregular fracture, and specific gravity varying with porosity from about 2 to less than 1. The composition is somewhat variable,- but is near that determined by Schaller (1936) for sepiolite as 2MgO.3SiO2.4H2O. A more modern for mula based on X-ray determination of the crystal structure is given by Caillére and Henin (1961) as (Site) (Mg9)030(OH)6(0H2)46H20. The reason for the firm, compact nature of meerschaum, in contrast with the earthy variety of sepiolite, is not fully understood. It may be due to the presence of a very minor amount of some bonding material such as silica. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) photographs of a specimen from Turkey (Figs. lc-le) indicate that the meerschaum is composed predominantly, if not entirely, of crystalline fibers which merge into sheetlike forms in a complex, intertwined mass. Detailed X-ray and crystal structure data, as well as some data on thermal stability range, are given by Caillère and Hénin (1961) for the sepiolite family of minerals. Mode of Occurrence and Origin Most authors have attributed the origin of meerschaum to alteration of serpentine or other magnesian minerals. The occurrence in alluvium and other surficial deposits does not necessarily indicate that the alteration was supergene. In fact, hydrothermal origin appears more likely for some deposits, though not for all.

The engineering design features of the Mercur Gold Project crushing, grinding, carbon-in-leach, bullion, reagent, and tailings disposal areas will be discussed in this paper. It presents a project overview and flowsheet along with selected design alternatives. During the engineering phase, major equipment and other features were selected to optimize design within site location and environmental constraints. The project team organization and procedures were adopted to accommodate multiple optimization studies while maintaining a tight engineering schedule.

Front Range, Colorado: The majority of the rocks comprising the Front Range of Colorado are pre- Cambrian schists, gneisses, and intrusives which have been elevated to form part of the Southern Rocky Mountain physiographic province. The region is noted mainly for its production of gold and silver, but ores of tungsten, fluorspar, uranium, copper, and iron have been worked. Geological literature describes pitchblende and other radioactive minerals occurring at Jamestown, Boulder County; Central City, Gilpin County; and Lawson, Clear Creek County (fig. 1). These three adjoining counties cover most of the highly mineralized section of the Front Range which extends from James- town to Breckenridge. As far as the writer is aware, uranium has been found only in the portion north-east of Lawson.

IN recent print, some remarkably contradictory statements have appeared regarding the importance to be attached to sponge iron,1-6 a metallurgical commodity whose history goes back at least to the time of Diodorus Siculus in the fourth century B.C. This disagreement, however, expresses the lack of a satisfactory method for producing sponge iron rather than defection in the commodity. The blast furnace is admitted to have certain inherent disadvantages, such as a general unsuitability for magnetite and the heating and blowing of vast quantities of undesirable nitrogen, so that a workable sponge-iron process remains attractive. In this respect, low-temperature gaseous reduction shows especial promise; but confusion persists regarding the factors involved. The present paper, therefore, has three principal divisions: (I) an exhaustive examination of all previous work on low-temperature gaseous reduction, (2) experimentation on the reduction of a magnetite with hydrogen, and (3) development of certain thermodynamic relationships in reduction, with a summarized depiction of the factors in the general process. PREVIOUS INVESTIGATIONS Gaseous media used in the reduction processes under discussion can be classified in three types: (I) H2, (2) CO, and (3) other gases. In the second, the CO is often admixed with H2. The third principally comprises hydrogeniferous gases, such as natural gas and producer gas, and in addition includes chlorine. Because hydrogen therefore features in all three, a study of hydrogen reduction based on investigations using pure hydrogen alone may be incomplete. The present paper reviews the three groups of investigations in the listed order, paying particular attention to hydrogen reduction. For the benefit of future workers, an exhaustive bibliography has been prepared and similarly classified. GROUP I: REDUCTION WITH HYDROGEN Equilibria Although the present problem is specifically one of kinetics, a first consideration is the equilibrium of the system, since the reactions to be studied comprise that equilibrium, and their direction and end points are defined by it. The historic development of these researches is interesting and informative.
