A small group of members of the Institute headed by W. H. Shockley, has insistently demanded that the Institute submit to the members for letter ballot the question of our using in our publications and corre-spondence certain so-called "simplified spellings." The principal argu-ment in favor of this proposal is written by Mr. Shockley and will be submitted in full to the membership for ballot. It rests chiefly on the desirability of saving the time of school children in the learning of the spelling of the English language. A sample of correspondence had with one of the gentlemen on this subject is given herewith in order that members may see what the correspondence and publications of the Institute would look like if we adopted the proposals. This sample was chosen at random: "Onse I condemd the report ov a president of the Institute. He did not pruve his case even on paper-"a hot air profet," I sed. Time has pruved he was." "I rote yu about the muvement to better the spelling in the Institute Bulletin, etc., neglecting to say some things that I mite hav said and things hav happened since which no member ov a democratically governed society shoud stand without protest."

Fluid mechanics research conducted with non-Newtonian fluid systems now permits prediction of the behavior of these fluid systems in both laminar and turbulent modes of flow through circular pipes. Present work concerns non-Newtonian fluid systems currently used in the hydraulic fracturing process. During fracturing treatments, an unsteady-state condition may frequently be encountered arising from. the reaction rate of a chemical additive. This condition must be evaluated in order to predict the actual behavior of a particular fluid during field application. Design and operation of the apparatus used to determine fluid-flow behavior permit obtaining data under such non-equilibrium conditions. This paper shows methods used to obtain rheology measurements, develop hydraulic relationships and evaluate chemical reactions producing unsteady-state conditions. Engineering application of this research is illustrated by employing measured rheological values and developed hydraulic retationships to produce frictional pressure loss (psi/100 ft) us flow rate (bbl/min) charts of common tubing and casing sizes for an example fracturing fluid. How these charts and chemical reaction rate information are then combined to predict actual turbulent hydraulic behavior during unsteady-state field conditions is also discussed INTRODUCTION Many fluids used in hydraulic fracturing contain chemical additives which impart non-Newtonian fluid properties that may drastically alter their hydraulic behavior. Equally drastic alteration in wellhead pressure, injection rate and hydraulic horsepower requirement may result from these fluid properties. Prior research conducted to relate non-Newtonian fluid properties with hydraulic behavior has not as yet produced a universal relationship, particularly for the turbulent flow region. which of the many Possible non-Newtonian fluid properties is responsible has not been conclusively established. A systematic description, suggested by Metzner, of the many possible non-Newtonian fluid properties exhibited by real-fluid behavior, and a current discussion of theoretical and applied aspects of non-Newtonian fluid technoloy can be found in Handbook of Fluid Dynamics. f Little or no research has previously been attempted with fluids exhibiting time - dependent properties. Addition of chemicals during a fracturing treatment is often accomplished by continuously mixing and displacing the fluid. This produces a time-dependent effect or unsteady-state condition while the fluid is progressing through surface and wellbore conductors. This condition is due to solution or chemical reaction of the additive. Considerable departure from conventional methods of obtaining and interpreting data was found necessary to consider these conditions. Therefore methods were developed to obtain hydraulic behavior information under these complex, unsteady-state conditions. Relationships presented in this paper to predict hydraulic behavior of non-Newtonian fluids in circular pipes were obtained by constructing and operating a small pipeline apparatus in the manner of a pilot-plant study. These relationships are suggested as scaleup equations and are not proposed as fundamental rheological parameters. While perhaps deficient from a fundamental research viewpoint, a pilot-plant study does permit the determination and convenient evaluation of variables pertinent to a process. A pilot-plant study can result in a valid engineering application procedure even when fundamental relationships are still undefined. An excellent series of articles by Bowen has appeared in the chemical engineering literature.2-8 These give a thorough review of proposed hydraulic relationships and their limitations for non-Newtonian fluid behavior in circular pipes. A graphical method is presented to scale up data for a fluid exhibiting an anomalous hydrau1ic behavior in the turbulent flow region. Considerable assistance has been obtained from these articles to interpret the anomalous behavior noted during this investigation. These articles also provided assurance that a pilot plant is a practical approach to evaluate the hydraulic behavior of non-Newtonian fracturing fluids. _____________

Maurice Rey—The influence of cyclone diameter upon the fineness of separation is an important point which, however, cannot be discussed adequately if the injection pressure or the rate of flow are not specified. Perhaps some light can be thrown on the matter by using the formulas derived by Dahlstrom. Let us consider several geometrically similar cyclones where the apertures e and b are equal and proportional to the diameter D and which are operated with the same pressure drop. Eq 8 of Dahlstrom's paper can be written: Q Q = K D'. " or. if F is constant: Q = K D18 K is a constant of proportionality. Introducing this value of Q in eq 13 gives elimination efficiency = K D0' " Elimination efficiency, in the terminology of Dahlstrom, means the diameter of particles, in microns, which divide equally between the underflow and the overflow. This denomination is regrettable and it would be preferable to call it diameter of separation or characteristic size or any other name connoting a size rather than an efficiency. Whatever the name used, the above equation shows a slow increase in the fineness of separation when the diameter of the cyclone decreases. For example, if a 14-in. cyclone gives a 400-mesh separation (37 microns), geometrically similar cyclones, having the same pressure drop will give separations at the sizes shown below.

MR. CHAIRMAN, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN: I need not say how much I appreciate the honor of being asked to lecture to you, and how much I would thank you for your kind invitation. It is encouraging to feel that the abnormal restrictions of the war have been relaxed sufficiently to allow a free exchange of scientists between our two countries, and I hope that some of you will be persuaded to go to England, and to visit us at Oxford, so that I may repay a little of the kindness I have received from you. As this is one of the first lectures since the end of the war, I have thought it well to describe some of the advances in the theory of alloys which were made in the years between the two World Wars. From the point of view of theoretical science, these years have been of outstanding interest in the history of metallurgy. They have been years in which the development of new and more accurate experimental methods has led to the revelation of many new facts. At the same time, the theoretical developments have enabled some of these facts to be viewed as parts of a general scheme, and we may say that some of the foundations of metallurgical science have been laid. This work was naturally stopped by the Second World War, and it can therefore be reviewed as one definite stage in the development of our Science. To illustrate the new advances, I shall deal mainly with the alloys of copper and silver, since these have revealed many of the general principles. SOLID SOLUTION At the beginning of our period, the first steps in X-ray crystal analysis had been taken, and copper had been found to crystallize in the face-centered cubic structure (Fig I). The determination of this structure naturally was of immense importance in the understanding of our subject, because it meant that we were at last in a position to appreciate the underlying structure out of which the crystal of copper was built. The earlier science of metallography had shown that in many alloys of copper the addition of a second metal in not too large proportions resulted in the formation of a homogeneous alloy which was regarded as a solid solution of the one metal in copper. Fig 2, for example, shows the so-called equilibrium diagram of the copper-zinc alloys, and here you will see that there is a solid solution of zinc in copper extending to something of the order 35 to 40 at. pct zinc.

IN last year's report on the progress of geophysics, the airborne magnetometer was the featured new development. At that time only a relatively small number of surveys had been made. During 1947, the airborne magnetometer was used in making many surveys and is again one of the high lights of the year in geophysics. This report is mainly concerned with geophysics as applied to the search for minerals exclusive of petroleum. In 194,5 and 1946, the use of the magnetic method reached a peak, partly because of an active period of prospecting brought on by an active mining market, particularly in Canada.

The Hoover and Mason Phosphate Co. made extensive tests with a rig manufactured by the Paris Manufacturing CO. as shown in Fig I. It is powered by a 20-hp Wisconsin air-cooled gasoline engine, through a single reduction gear and flexible coupling. The machine operates a 4-in. auger with a detachable cutting head, as shown in Fig I. The auger length is 3 ft 4 in. and the cutting head averages 7 in. The unit has a drilling capacity of 100 ft and can drill an average prospect hole in less than 15 min. The weight of the motor is used for the thrust feed for driving the auger and head down, aided by the spiral shape of the auger. The rate of downward motion—i.e., the feed—is regulated by a handwheel. The string of tools is withdrawn from the hole by a gear train controlled by a hand-operated clutch. HAULAGE in tunneling operations generally has been done with electric locomotives. As a rule, on short hauls the source of electricity is a storage battery mounted on the locomotive, which, of course, must be removed and recharged periodically. Where the distance from the recharging point to the tunnel face is very long, and where loads are heavy, trolley-driven locomotives are used. Diesel engines have been used in mining and tunneling operations in Europe for a number of years. The recent reports of studies in Belgium1 and by the Bureau of Mines in this country2-4 have indicated the potentialities of this form of power for haulage, mucking, bulldozing and many other underground operations. The hazards attending the use of Diesel engines in more or less closed spaces have long been known. The exhaust constituents that may create a harmful or objectionable environment are carbon monoxide, oxides of nitrogen and sulphur, carbon dioxide, aldehydes and smoke. Lack of precise information regarding the concentration of these gases and the ventilation requirements to reduce them to safe levels has to some extent suppressed their general acceptance in tunneling and mining work. Not until the work of the Bureau of Mines referred to above, and certain experience gained in the construction of the Delaware Aqueduct,‡ has there been available the requisite information regarding the conditions under which their use may be permitted. This paper concerns itself with the successful operation of Diesel engines underground in the construction of certain parts of the Delaware Aqueduct, and describes the conditions under which Diesel engines have been found to operate with a minimum production of noxious gases. The test data reported were obtained during the operation of Diesel engines over a period of two years.* STUDIES BY THE NEW YORK STATE DEPARTMENT OF LABOR Exhaustive tests were made by the Division of Industrial Hygiene, of the composition of the exhaust gases given off by a Diesel engine mounted on. a test block. MANY trends were evident in the coal industry during 1951. Some were favorable for the industry; others were not. Probably those having the most far-reaching consequences are those affecting coal's markets. The rapid dieselization of many railroads and the continued trend toward oil and natural gas for home heating has caused serious dislocations in various mining districts. Mines have been forced to close down or to work on a reduced time basis. Conversely the increased activity in the metallurgical industries has increased the demand for coking and special purpose coals, and the growing production of electric energy has increased the demand in certain areas for steam coals. The increased demand for metallurgical coal and for steam raising by the large utilities is more than equal tonnage-wise to the loss of coal to railroad dieselization and conversions to oil and gas in the domestic market. Since much of the expansion is at captive mines of large corporations, many commercial operators supplying railroad and domestic users have had their markets curtailed without any compensating demand from other sources. Feverish activity was in evidence in many areas by commercial operators attempting to find new markets. The Norfolk and Western Railway is the, only major American railroad committed to the burning of coal. It has an exceptionally good cost record. During 1951, fifteen additional modern coal-burning steam switching locomotives were authorized for construction in the company's Roanoke shops at a cost of about $1,450,000. When the new order is completed the road will own a total of sixty locomotives of the modern-switcher type, including thirty acquired by purchase last year. The Norfolk and Western today is the only American railroad building its own motive power. All of these locomotives burn coal. Production Coal production in the year 1951 will approximate 570 million tons of anthracite, bituminous coal, and lignite. Of this, approximately 7 pet is anthracite. Total production is approximately 30 million tons more than in 1950 and reflects the increase in general industrial activity. Exports are expected to be close to 50 million tons. The industrial stockpile is close to 75 million tons, the highest it has been since 1943. With the exception of the usual local stoppages the year 1951 was unmarked by labor disputes. It was a year of good labor-management relations with a negotiated wage increase unmarred by a work stoppage. This may be the beginning. of an era of sensible negotiations to find agreeable settlements of disputes without the usual protracted bickering and industry-wide strike. The United Mine Workers of America has condemned wildcat strikes, stating that in nearly every, instance proper grievance procedures have not been instituted. Government defense organizations, perhaps profiting by their experiences during World War II, are pursuing a more enlightened program with regard to the fuel requirements of the nation. Many prominent officials have stated that wherever possible coal should be considered the primary source of fuel in all defense expansion. With the increased consumption of steel by defense projects, approval of transportation facilities for liquid and gaseous fuels have been refused where these fuels would enter a coal producing area. Liquid and gaseous fuel producers also have failed to provide satisfactory evidence that they have sufficient reserves and are capable of supplying their product in adequate amounts for the periods of time required. Realization has at last become prevalent that the hydro-electric power installations in several areas are insufficient to handle increased demands.' Steam generating plants are being constructed in these areas and equipped to burn coal. Most notable of these, is the TWA area whose supplemental steam power plants are expected to consume 10 million tons of coal per year when completed. The Pacific Northwest is another area which is expected to follow the same pattern. Nearly all new steam-power generating plants are being equipped to burn coal either as a primary fuel or as an emergency measure. Metallurgical Coal The steel and other metallurgical industries are expanding rapidly to meet increased industrial demands and defense orders. Since these industries are dependent on coke, coke has had a year of high production and can be expected to break all existing records when steel-plant expansions are completed. Most notable of the expansion projects is that of the Delaware River area where the iron ore will be received by ship from Canada and South America. U. S. Steel is only one of several steel corporations that are planning on putting integrated steel producing units in this area. The Defense Solids Fuels Administration announced in December that through. THE system of pitwork used with the Cornish pumping engine, and which, for want of a better name, we may call the Cornish system of pitwork, consists essentially of a series of plunger-pumps, situated one below the other, in a shaft or incline, the plungers being operated by a rod called the pitman or pump-rod, which must, therefore, extend from the motor at the surface to the lowest pump. The subject will be best understood by reference to Fig. 1, in which k may be taken as typical of the ordinary plunger-pump, in which S is the suction pipe, u, the lower valve situated in the H piece T; v, the upper valve situated in the valve-box O; I, the mounting-pipe or column through which the water is carried to the surface; L, the plunger-barrel, and P, the plunger working through the stuffing-box, and actuated by the branch rod r, which is attached to the main pump-rod, R. The action of the pump is as follows : On the ascent of the plunger, acting now by suction, the water flows from the reservoir through the valve u, into the barrel, L. On the descent of the plunger, the water is forced up through the valve, v, which acts merely as a check valve, into the pipe, I, through which it is, at each successive down-stroke of the plunger, forced upward until it reaches the next reservoir, from which it is taken by another similar pump, and so on until it reaches the surface or drain-tunnel. The pump is obviously only single-acting, i. e., it acts only during one-half of its entire stroke. The weight of water raised during the up-stroke of the plunger is equal to the weight of a column of water whose base is the area of the plunger and whose height is the mean distance between the plunger-face and the surface of water in the lower reservoir, a distance not usually exceeding 12 or 15 feet, and which obviously cannot under the most favorable circumstances, exceed 25 or 30 feet. The water forced up during the down-stroke is equal to the weight of a column of water whose base equals the area of the plunger and whose height equals the length of the mounting column above the mean position of the plunger-face, say from 150 to 300 feet. IT is obvious that details such as the physical and chemical properties and methods of heat-treating of the materials mentioned must be omitted in a paper on the subject of materials used in oil-refinery pumps1. Only sufficient identification is given to enable the reader to find additional information from already published data. Also, the subject covers many operating conditions, but only the most important services can be discussed here. To the oil refiner, the pumping equipment is of vital interest. Practi-cally every refinery operation, from the charging of crude oil to a dis-tillation unit to the shipping of refined products, involves some form of pumping machinery. Intermediate refining stages involve a great variety of pumping machinery to carry out successfully the aims of the refinery technologist. Temperatures at which oils are handled vary from -50° F. to 900° F. Pressure may vary from subatmospheric to 2000 lb. per, sq. inch. The selection of the proper materials involves a careful consideration of the conditions under which the particular pump must operate. The four most important considerations are temperature, pressure, corrosion, and abrasion or wear. Consideration of temperature may be divided into three parts: (1) extremely low temperatures of the order of -50° F.; (2) temperatures at atmospheric or slightly above; (3) temperatures from 200° to 900° F. Pressures fall into two groups: (1) pressures reached by ordinary trade pumps of the order of 200 lb. per sq. in., (2) extreme pressure conditions involving pressures as high as 2000 lb. Noncorrosive and corrosive oils can be treated differently. Under the latter falls corrosion in the presence of water, which will occur up to 250° F. The second type of corrosion occurs in high-temperature pump-ing equipment, with temperatures from 450° to 900° F., largely caused by sulfur compounds. AMONG naturally occurring inorganic compounds, magnetite has many unusual and interesting properties, and it is the purpose of this paper to call attention to these properties and review possible uses of magnetite that might be based on them; in other words, to see what uses may be found for magnetite as a physical rather than as a chemical entity, as a mineral rather than as an iron ore. The Mineral Physics Studies initiated in the Metallurgical Division of the U. S. Bureau of Mines a few years ago gathered together much information on mineral properties, and they are therefore the principal source of material for this paper. Magnetic Properties Of Magnetite And Possible Uses As A Magnetic Material Magnetite is unique among minerals for its great magnetic susceptibility, approximately one-third that of soft iron, and some magnetites are permanent magnets, or lodestones. The literature contains many measurements of magnetic properties of individual magnetite crystals, but no systematic survey of the effect of mechanical preparation and heat-treatment was available until the recent investigations of the Bureau of which included not only susceptibility but coercive force and remanence as well. For the purpose of orientation, Table 1 gives the magnetic properties of several samples of magnetite and of a few other substances3. This table indicates that when ordinary magnetite is powdered it decreases in susceptibility and increases in coercive force and remanence, approaching the properties of lodestone. The properties of lodestone are in fact probably due to the development of very large internal surface on fine grain size4.

IT. H. Hausner( Sylvunia Electric Products Inc., Bay-side, N. Y.)—The results reported by the authors are interesting because they contribute some information on the principles of sintering and also because of a certain practical value for the manufacture of powder . metallurgical parts in production. Pressed powder compacts are frequently sintered in a boat in several layers so that the lower layers are actually sintered under the weight of the upper layers and, therefore, are frequently deformed. The authors gave information on this deformation process by determining the effect of the load on the density. The experimental setup of the authors, however, has a disadvantage—that the sintering occurred in a cylindrical container so that the deformation was stopped in the direction of the diameter. The authors should have rather called this a study of hot-pressing than of sintering. I want to call the attention of the authors and others interested in sintering under load to the experimental work described by Dawihl and Rix.' These authors sintered cylindrical compacts under a lengthwise ten-sional load of 0 to 25 g and found that the shrinkage in length and diameter changes considerably with the load, but that the volume shrinkage is affected very little by the load. The fact that they found volume shrinkage little affected by varying tensional loads during sintering seems to support the contention that the forces due to loading are equivalent to and additive to the forces which cause densification. This contention is the basis of our comparison of sintering and creep.

Tlze room-temperature tensile fracture oj smooth, round specitnens of three ultrnhigh- strength steels tempered to a wide range of strength levels was studied by means by light and electron-microscopic examination of the fracture surfaces. The fracture of AISI 4340 and 300 M at all the strength levels studied, and H-11, except after tempering at 1200° and 1300°F, occurs in three stages. The initiation of fracture is internal (except in some lightly tcmpeved specimers in which fracture is initiated at surface flaws), and is nucleated largely by separation at metal-second phase intevjaces. TIze voids grow and, coalesce to form a crack. When the crack has reached a sufficienl size, rapid propngutio~z ensues. Failure in this stage of fracture usually occurs by dimpled rupture of inicroshear stefis. In the case of H-11 tempered in the 1125° to 1300°F range, fracture in the shear steps is predominantly by concentrated deformation without void formation. The termination of fracture is usually occomplished by the formation of a shear lib in which fracture occurs by shear dimpled rupture. In the case of H-11 tempered at 1200° and 1300°F, no shear lip was obserued, and the radial elelments extend to the surface—a true termination slage does not exist. ThE tensile fracture of several metals and alloys has been investigated.2-4 In the case of polycrystal-line materials, cup-cone fracture usually results. The mechanism of cup-cone fracture may be summarized as follows.5 Cavities are formed in the necked region of the specimen. They usually are initiated by inclusions or second-phase particles. The cavities extend outwards by means of internal necking, and a crack lying about perpendicular to the length of the specimen is formed in the necked region. Subsequent crack growth occurs by the spread of bands of concentrated plastic deformation inclined at an angle of 30 to 40 deg to the tensile axis. Cavities are formed in the bands of concentrated deformation. The deformation bands zigzag across the bar with the net result that mac-roscopically the crack extends about perpendicular to the specimen axis. The final separation, or cone formation, appears to occur by continued crack propagation along one of the deformation bands out to the surface of the specimen. The micromechanics of the tensile fracture of ultrahigh-strength steels have not been thoroughly investigated. Larson and carr6,7 studied the tensile-fracture surfaces of AISI 4340 with a low-power microscope and reported that three stages of fracture could be observed in general. A centrally located region characterized by circumferential ridges, an annular region characterized by radial surface striations, and a peripheral shear lip were found. It was first pointed out by 1rwin8 that the central region is very probably one of fracture initiation and slow growth, and that the annular, radially striated region is one of rapid crack growth. Presumably the crack grows slowly, assuming roughly a lenticular shape, until it is large enough for the initiation of rapid propagation. In this investigation, it was attempted to determine the fine-scale aspects of the room-temperature tensile fracture of some ultrahigh-strength steels, and to relate the variation in fracture mode with microstructure. The steels studied were AISI 4340, 300M, and H-11 tempered to a wide range of strength levels. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The compositions of the steels studied are given in Table I. The steel was received in the form of hot-rolled bar stock 5/8 to 1 in. in diameter from which oversized specimens were machined and heat-treated. The heat treatments employed are given in Table 11. Subsequent to heat treatment, the specimens were ground to the final dimensions and stress-relieved by heating for 1 hr at 350°F (with the exception of the as-quenched steel). Standard smooth round specimens of 0.252-in. diameter and 1-in. gage length were tested in a Tinius Olsen Universal Testing Machine using a cross-head speed of 0.025 in. per min. The relatively coarse aspects of the fracture topography were determined by light-microscopic examination of sections through the fracture surface of nickel-plated specimens. A direct carbon-replication technique9 was used in the electron-microscopic study of the fracture surfaces. The replicas were examined in the electron microscope, and stereo pairs of electron micrographs were taken. The stereo pairs were then examined using a Wild ST4 Mirror Stereoscope. Carbide and inclusion particles extracted in the replicas were analyzed by selected-area electron diffraction. II) EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS The mechanical testing data are summarized in Table 111. Coal-oil mixture (COM) combustion technology is regarded by the US Department of Energy (DOE) as near term and Potentially applicable to existing utility and industrial steam generators and for injection into blast furnaces. From work done previously, it has been established that COM can be burned in existing boilers and blast furnaces. Therefore, the issues being addressed by the current DOE program are: (1) determination of best available technology to achieve environmentally acceptable long-term reliable operation and (2) determination of applications for which COM can be utilized economically. Some of the technological options have begun to be determined by projects already under way. However, many projects are still in the early stages of development.

DATING back some five years ago, various foundries made inquiries as to the probable total carbon content in a given specification and grade of pig iron. Up to that time we had no data, and except for a few occasional determinations of total carbon, no attempt had ever been made to set up routine determinations of total carbon. In fact, at that time, a cast analysis was considered sufficient, without examining at further length into possible variations of analysis between ladles of the same cast. In view of the various inquiries as to total carbon, we sampled all piles of all grades of pig iron, making complete analyses. Finding some variation in carbon content, we secured more samples and plotted the carbon content with respect to silicon in each grade of iron except for the higher phosphorus foundry iron, where it was necessary to divide the group into twenty-point phosphorus ranges. This is easily understood, owing to the falling off of carbon content with the increase in phosphorus con-tent, silicon in each case being the same. In addition, these curves clearly demonstrate the lowering of the carbon content as the silicon is increased. In order to insure accuracy and reliable determinations the following method of sampling and analysis was employed: Two pigs selected from each end of the car, each car containing iron from one 50-ton ladle, are drilled with a 5/16-in. drill all the way through from top to bottom in the center of one section of the pig. The drillings are collected and transferred to an 80-mesh sieve; the portion passing through and the portion retained are placed in separate envelopes and labeled accordingly. The amount of sample in each envelope is weighed to obtain the proportionate amount of coarse and fine drillings, then a factor weight of sample (1.3636 grams) made up of proportionate

PORTH, New York, N.Y.-I would like to ask what effect segregation of lead would have upon the corrosion of sheet zinc; also what effect would abnormal percentages of iron have upon the ductility of Sheet zinc? One of our difficulties seemed to be that the cells, when standing on the shelf, corroded. We have attributed this to local action in the zinc sheet. We would like to know whether the segregation of, these impurities in this sheet zinc will have any effect on the local action occur-ring in sheet zinc. Lately we have had difficulty in punching some sheet zinc, in that the sheets split in the die. The section that split seemed to have an abnormallly high percentage of cadmium and iron; would that cause it to become brittle? C. H.
