OF all the military services, the Signal Corps is the most concerned with piezoelectric minerals because of its function as a supply service to the strategic and tactical military forces. Consequently this paper is written from the point of view of one associated with that organization. The Signal Corps is responsible for the research, development, and supply of communications, radar, and components to the using services of the Department of the Army and to some extent the other branches of the National Defense Department. Their work therefore includes the study of the sources, characteristics, and application of quartz and other piezoelectric materials. These materials have become a vital consideration in strategic planning and are essential for efficient tactical operation by all the Armed Forces. The Signal Corps at the beginning of World War II was responsible for both Army Ground and Air Force electronic equipment. Since that time this Army service organization has probably done more in the development of frequency control devices using piezoelectric materials than any other group.

"Butte originated as a placer mining camp. The first gold discovery was made in the year 1864, near what is now Main Street. Placer mining was vigorously prosecuted along Silver Bow Creek and in Missoula, Buffalo, Town and Parrot gulches for a period of five years, at the end of which time, in 1870, the camp was practically deserted. In the meantime, the quartz veins so prominently traceable over the hillsides were located, the first location being made by W. L. Farlin and called the Black Chief claim, and later restaked as the Travona. Reasoning from the presence of the gold placers, free-milling gold ores were eagerly looked for by the early prospectors. Claims covering the great Rainbow and other silver lodes were located in the sixties. The presence of valuable silver ores in these veins caused the staking out of many claims, believed to be valuable only for silver, but which later proved to be enormous copper producers.Treatment of these early discovered rich ores was first attempted in arrastres. Later, stamp mills were built. The Centennial dropping 10 stamps, was the first, and in 1875 Mr. Farlin built the Dexter 10-stamp mill, intro¬ducing chloridizing-roasting. More successful processes were soon introduced and several large mills built, among which were the Alice, Lexington, Silver Bow, Moulton and Bluebird, in all representing a total of 290 stamps. The silver mining industry reached its zenith in 1887 and declined rapidly in the early nineties, following the sudden drop in the price of silver in 1892.During this period of silver mining activity the business of copper mining was making rapid strides. Development of the veins, located as silver veins, had uncovered copper ore in many instances. There was great activity in ""claim staking'' in the years from 1871 to 1879, during which period most of the claims covering the present productive copper area were located."

The heals of formation at 78", 195, and 273°K of the ternary compound h3SbTe2 based on the elements and based on the binary compounds In Sb and [inTe have been measured. The heats of formation at these temperatlcres of the binary compounds In Sb and In Te based on the elements have also been determined. Heal contents and free energies of the three compounds have been calculated from 0° lo 80I)°K. The free energies of joyrrzalion, heats of formations, and entropies of formation at 298°K have also been calculated. The results shown that the tertnary compound is metastable with vespecl to InSh and ln Te below 696 °K. bul is slable above that temperature. The weaker bonding of results in a positice entropy of formation which with incrensirzg temperature makes increasing negative conlvihtclions to the free energy and above 696°K renders the compound slable. THE ternary compound In3SbTez occurring in the quasi-binary system In Sb- In Te' forms on cooling at 829°K by a peritectic reaction.' Observations at 673" and 573 K have shown that this ternary compound decomposes slowly into the binary compounds InSb and1n~e.l'' It has not been possible to analyze the metastable behavior of the ternary compound because up to the present time data on its thermodynamic properties have been lacking. Some information on the binary compounds, however, is available. The heat of formation of InTe at 273°K and its free energy at 673°K are kn~wn.~'~ The heats of formation of InSb at 78", 273', 298", and 723°K have been measured5-' and its heat capacity between approximately 12" and 300"Kg9l0 is also known. In the investigation reported here the heats of formation at 78% 195% and 273°K of the ternary compound In3SbTez have been measured. The heats of formation of the binary compounds InSb and InTe at these temperatures have been obtained by combining new calorimetric results with previously published data. The heat contents and free energies of the three compounds at various temperatures from 0" to 800°K have been calculated. Against the background of this information, the metastability of the ternary compound will be discussed. 1) EXPERIMENTAL 1.l) Preparation of Specimens. The materials used consisted of the elements indium, antimony, and tellurium, the binary compounds InSb and InTe, and the ternary compound In3SbTez. The elements, obtained from American Smelting and Refining Co., had a nominal purity of 99.999+ pct. The compound InSb was Cominco semiconductor grade; the compound InTe was prepared from the elements by melting under a vacuum of 10-h m Hg followed by slow cooling. Three batches of specimens of the compound In3SbTez were used. One batch was prepared by melting appropriate amounts of the elements in an evacuated and sealed Vycor tube. The melt was held at approximately 100°K above the liquidus for about 8 hr, shaken repeatedly, and quenched into a mixture of ice and water. The specimen was annealed in vacuum at 760°K for 4 weeks. In preparing a second batch, a mixture of the component elements was melted and quenched in water. The resulting ingot was powdered. The powder was pressed into pellets, which were annealed in vacuum at 748" to 773°K for 4 weeks. A third batch was prepared in the same manner as the second, except that the starting materials were InSb and InTe rather than the elements. Metallographic examination of samples of the three batches and X-ray diffraction examination of a sample of the second batch did not reveal evidence of microsegregation or a second phase. The results obtained with the three batches showed no systematic differences. 1.2) Calorimetry. The calorimetric method has been described in detail." Samples of the compound In3SbTez, mechanical mixtures of InSb and InTe in the proportion of 1:2, and mechanical mixtures of indium, antimony, and tellurium in the proportion of 3:1:2 were added to a bismuth-rich bath at 623°K in a metal-solution calorimeter. These additions were made from 78°K (liquid nitrogen), 195°K (dry ice and acetone), and 273°K (ice and water). The heat effects of the additions were measured. The difference in the heat effects of the additions of a compound and the additions of the mixtures of its constituents, adjusted for differences in the concentration of the bath, is the heat of formation of the compound. In the concentration range not exceeding 1.5 at. pct solute, the heat effect of the additions was a linear function of concentration. The heat of formation refers to the temperature from which the additions were made, namely, 78", 195", or 273°K. Several calibrating additions were made in each calorimetric run. The calculated heat capacity of the calorimeter and hence the calculated heat effects of the additions of samples depend upon the values adopted for the heat contents of the calibrating substance. In this investigation bismuth at 273°K was used and a value of 4.96 kcal per g-atom was taken for (HGZ3"k . 2) RESULTS AND DISCUSSION 2.l) Heats of Formation. The paper relates to the laboratory and pilot plant studies that have been carried out by Sherritt Gordon Mines Ltd., Metallurgical Research Div., in developing the ammonia pressure leach process for extracting Cu, Ni, Co, and S from high grade Ni concentrate produced from Lynn Lake ores and describes in some detail the chemistry of the process. In the leaching stage air, ammonia, and sulphide minerals react in a sequence of inter-related steps to produce soluble amines of Ni, Cu, and Co in a solution containing sulphate, thiosulphate, polythionate, and sulphamate ions and a controlled amount of free ammonia, the iron and other components of the concentrate remaining as an insoluble residue which is separated from the leach solution by filtration. The pregnant solution produced in leaching is further treated by boiling to precipitate and remove Cu as cuprous sulphide, leaving a copper-free solution with a composition suitable fir subsequent precipitation of Ni and Cu by H,. The progress of individual reactions in leaching and copper removal is discussed. The effect of variables such as temperature, pressure, ammonia concentration, particle size, and agitation is outlined and the technique of thionate control in leach solutions is described. Data is given for the physical and chemical reactions involved in precipitating copper from leach solutions as Cu sulphide by boiling.

Although some of the observers who first paid especial attention to the occurrences of oil and gas in the strata (such as Hunt in 1859, Andrews in 1861; Winchell in 1865, Mendelejeff in 1876, Höfer in 1876, Minshall in 1881, and I. C. White in 1883) seem to have been impressed with the fact that oil and gas deposits were connected with the disturbances in the rocks caused by their upheavalll yet, with the exception of Mendelejeff, and possibly Andrews, these observers do not appear to have understood what is really the one essential factor in the occurrence of oil and gas in the strata: viz., the faulting, uplifting, fracturing, fis-suring, and jointing always accompanying even slight rock disturbances, and in certain districts (petroliferous provinces)2 allowing solfataric hydrocarbon emanations to force their way up from the interior and to reach and impregnate the porous portions of sediments subjected to the disturbances. Instead of this simple explanation to account -for the observed connection between petroleum deposits and rock disturbances, most of the observers mentioned above, and many others who have foliowed them on the same lines since, have entirely reversed the problem. To them, instead of the dissemination of gases from fissures into the sediments, it presented the accumulation and concentration, according to anticlinal or other geologic structures, of oil and gas originally present throughout the whole mass of the strata where they were produced by the decomposition or distillation of organic remains. Whether this important problem involves accumulation from sources within the strata themselves, or infiltration and dissemination from outside sources, may be easily determined if all preconceived ideas are put aside and the established facts only are considered. DISCUSSION, H. L. Burghoff presiding C. S. Smith (University of Chicago, Chicago)—The author is to be congratulated on his valuable contribution to the extremely meager absolute data on interface energies in metallic systems. It is interesting to note that the ratio between a and r iron boundary energies is approximately the same in the quaternary alloy with silicon, carbon, and sulphur as in the binary Cu-Fe alloy. A value for the copper grain boundary energy can be obtained from the author's data, Tables IV and VI, by utilizing the energy ratios of the following pairs of interfaces: copper-sulphide/copper, copper y iron, y iron/y iron, y iron/ copper, and copper/copper. This gives a value of 595 erg per sq cm for the free energy of the copper grain boundary. Despite this circuitous route and the assumption that the y iron boundary is identical in alloys with and without sulphur and does not change between 1105" and 100O°C, this figure is in remarkably close agreement with other values of the copper boundary energy, obtained by equilibration against lead and against the free copper surface. It therefore appears either that impurities do not greatly affect the grain boundary energies or that boundaries in even nominally pure metals are already sufficiently contaminated so that further change has little effect.

WE should like to point out that Hu and cline.1 in their study of the recrystallization of titanium, have obtained data which appear very important for accurately determining the dependence of hardness on grain size for this material. It has been proposed2,3 that the macrohardness. H. of a poly crystalline material should depend on its average grain diameter, l. in accordance with the relationship: H =H0 + kHl-1/2 [1] where Ho and kH are experimental constants. This relationship follows from the hardness dependence on yield stress or flow stress4 and. thence. the Hall-Petch stress-grain size relations.5'6 Fig. 1 shows the Diamond Pyramid Hardness. Dph. values vs the reciprocal square root of the average diameter of the recrystallized grains, taken from the titanium data reported by Hu and Cline. The data in this figure give a linear relationship for the hardness over a wider range of grain diameters than anyone has previously measured. The data are not linear, for example. on an I-1 or l-1/3 scale. At the very large grain sizes the data are in reasonable agreement with measurements earlier reported by Holden, Ogden, and Jaffee.7 For the grain sizes smaller than 1 µ, which correspond in Fig. 1 to hardness values greater than 150, the material was reported as not being completely recrystallized and, therefore, these data appear less meaningful as far as the hardness dependence on grain size is concerned. However. it has been suggested by other investigators that deformed materials exhibit strengthening due to an effective grain size refinement even in the unrecrys-tallized condition.8-10 Also. Hu and Cline have shown that a change in texture occurs for titanium during the recrystallization process and. especially. following it. The influence of this texture change on the hardness-grain size relation would be expected to be less than that reflected in the unidirectional stress-strain behavior, even for an hcp material. because of the actual combined stress system which applies for the hardness test. For, at least, certain combined stresses, average values of the orientation factors should still occur in the stress-grain size analysis of a material exhibiting a preferred orientation.' We previously suggested3 that the experimental constants. H0 and kH. from the Meyer hardness-grain size relation should be correlated with the Hall-Petch constants, uoy and ky.5,6 Our recent study" of the Hall-Petch relation and the hardness-grain size results which obtain for a number of polycrystalline materials shows that: The inequality [2] is explained by noting that the hardness should be correlated. perhaps, with the flow stress at some value of strain, as suggested by Dugdale,12 and. also, that the influence of strain on the Hall-Petch relation is to increase uo and not change k very much." Normally. Dph values and Brinell hardness values are nearly equivalent to each other and to the Meyer hardness number. For the case of titanium, then. the inequality [2] may be evaluated using the experimental values of ao = 8.0 kg per sq mm and ky = 1.3 kg per mm3/2 obtained from the experiment of Guard.6,13 Thus, (Ho/uo) = 12 and (kH/k3) = 1.3. This research has been supported at the University of Maryland through the Center of Materials Research by the Advanced Research Projects Agency of the U.S. Government.

The Boston and Colorado Smelting Works are situated in the town of Black Hawk, Gilpin County, Colorado, on the Clear Creek Narrow Gauge Railway, 55 miles from Denver, in the Rocky Mountains, at an altitude of 7800 feet. It was one of the first works erected for the metallurgical treatment of gold ores, and the only one established in Colorado on a large scale which has been uniformly successful. Both gold and silver ores are treated, and gold, silver, and copper produced. The lead is not separated from the ores nor paid for, if it exists, and is entirely lost in the residues. The works were planned and built by Professor Hill, formerly Professor of Chemistry in Brown University, Providence, R. I., and is still managed by him, assisted by Mr. Richard Pearce, formerly professor in the School of Mines at Truro, England. They are very advantageously situated with regard to the ore-producing regions, having Boulder County on the north, which produces, besides ordinary gold ores, a series of tellurium minerals, such as altaite, sylvanite, and hessite, which are very rich in gold and silver. They are associated with copper and iron pyrites, blende, galena, and the carbonate and oxides of iron. Gilpin County itself produces for the most part the pyrites of iron and copper rich in gold, with a small quantity of galena and blende, which is rich in silver. In

S ULFURIC acid made in the United States during the last four years has averaged approximately 7,000,000 tons of 50" B6 acid a year. This is double the production of the year 1913. About 66 per cent of the acid is made from sulfur, 16 per cent from pyrite, 13 per cent at copper, lead, and zinc smelters, and the remainder from miscellaneous sources it her the chamber process or the contact process, (at some plants both) is used. In 1923, the contact process accounted for nearly 30 per cent of all the sulfuric acid made in this country and since then it has been increasingly employed. It was first introduced here in 1898, and has always .proved less expensive than the chamber process for the manufacture of .acid of high concentration and purity, but the latter produces acid of low strength suitable for many industries.

ARE we a "have" or a "have-not" nation in our domestic supply of metals and minerals? Impinging on the ears of a people weary of war and faced with the problems of reconversion to peace, the import of this question has built up with the momentum of an avalanche. Stemming from statistics cited by Pehrson and accelerated by the pessimistic and possibly biased statements of Ickes, hardly an issue of any technical periodical dealing with mining has appeared during the past year but within whose pages was to be found some comment, some discussion of the question: Are we a "have" or a "have-not" nation? We have proved commercial reserves of high-grade iron ore in the Lake Superior region sufficient for 22 years, based upon the prewar rate of consumption; commercial copper reserves to last only 34 years, one fourth being inferred ore; zinc sufficient for nineteen years, over half being inferred; lead for twelve years, two thirds of which is inferred; mercury for only three years. So read the figures. Although admitting that these figures may be extended by new discoveries, by the use of marginal and submarginal ore, and by further technological advances, are we nevertheless to assume complete pessimism in the acceptance of the meaning of these statistics; are we to expect a rapidly increasing dependence upon foreign sources of mineral supply; are we to believe that we are at or near the peak of the "metal age" as has been held by Theodore J. Hoover? Or is some more optimistic viewpoint possible?

IN recent years, there have been many changes in mining operations in the Lake Superior district. To follow these trends on the Menominee Range of Michigan, information has been assembled from all of the iron informatior]mining operations in the area. There are 15 operating underground mines in the Iron River-Crystal Falls area of the Menominee Range. Within the past two years, two idle properties were reopened pasttwoyears,and are now producing, and a third and fourth are being reopened. Also, there are two siliceous openpits operated by independent companies outside this immediate area. Six companies operate the underground mines, employing some 1850 employees. Table I shows pertinent facts about these properties. During 1949, the largest mine in Iron County shipped 571,287 tons, and one of the newer mines shipped 39,378 tons, with a range total to 3,535,-373 tons. Since the Menominee Range was opened in the 1870's, the mines in Iron County have shipped 85,890,922 tons. From an operator's viewpoint rather than a geologist's, the ore is' classified as semi-hard, composed of hematite and limonite. It is not as soft as the ores of the Marquette Range nor is it as hard as the hard ores of the Marquette and Vermillion Ranges. The ore bodies have slate hanging walls and slate footwalls. In most cases the hanging walls and footwalls are soft and high in sulphur. The sulphur comes from pyrite, and these slates will ignite when piled more than 6 to 8 ft high. Ore is mined on this range by: 1—Sub-level stop-ing; 2—Shrinkage stoping; 3—Sub-level caving; 4— Block caving; 5—Top slicing. The predominance of these methods is in the order named. Underground drilling is important in the mining cycle. Some changes made and trends toward future changes fall into four categories: Drill bits, drill steel, drill machines, and compressed air pressures. Several types of bits have been tried and are in use. They include the detachable tungsten carbide, insert bit; the intraset steel bit, which is a conventional steel rod with tungsten carbide insert; the one-use bit; and the multiple-use bit. For many years, detachable multiple-use bits have been standard. In tests conducted recently to im- prove drilling efficiency, this bit was used as the basis for comparison. Under existing conditions, a multiple-use bit can be resharpened about three times before it is discarded. A thorough test of 2-in. tungsten carbide threaded bits was conducted under various ground conditions. 1—The drilled footage ranged from 48 to 600 ft per bit; averaging 357 ft per bit. Under these same conditions, a multiple-use bit ranged from 8 to 80 ft per bit. 2—The bit cost was greater for the insert bit in each case. 3—The average drilling speed for the insert bit was 12 in. in 62 sec and for the multiple-use bit was 12 in. in 64 sec. In a second test, 2V4 -in. tungsten carbide bits with the large 1 3/16-in. thread were used in moderately soft ground on a 152-lb drifting drill on a long feed jumbo. 1—The drilled footage ranged from 450 to 5000 ft per bit, averaging 1810 ft per bit. Under these same conditions, a multiple-use bit averaged 64 ft per bit. 2—The bit cost was reduced by the use of the insert bit. 3—No increase in drilling speed was recorded. 4—Minimum footage obtained was caused by thread failure. To improve the thread life, thread size on the rod was increased and the bit was attached to the rod with a pipe wrench. After this, bits failed in equal proportions because of cracked skirts, broken inserts, and gage loss. Tungsten carbide bits are now used in the operation where this second test was conducted because labor costs were lowered as a result of reducing the number of bits being changed by the miners. At the same operation and under the same conditions as the second test, 1Y4-in. insert bits with standard 1-in. threads were used. These bits did not drill much more than 300 ft before thread failure and were then welded to the rods and used until total failure. Sometimes this footage was considerable, sometimes it was not.
