Wherever hereafter I employ the terms "technical education," "engineer," "technologist," or similar expressions, these are intended to be understood as relating to the broad field of the sciences and arts applicable to the mineral industries. First, the usefulness of technical education to either the possessor of it or those to whom its services may be made available industrially depends primarily upon the quality of the education and the capabilities of the educated to put his talents to effective and constructive employment in his chosen field of applied science.

TO all Mineral Dressers, but particularly to those in the Coal and Industrial Minerals Divisions: Ted Counselman, retiring after two years at the helm of the Milling Committee, pointed with pride to the continued growth of that committee, and sang the swan song "Why ain't we a Division of Mineral Dressing?" Our genial Secretary pointed out, handily, that, you see, the way the Institute is divided there are several blocks running across this way here, and one running all the way down here, and another running part way down here, and they all cut across each other like this, and anyway the miners want to be a Division now, so why not you Mineral Dressers be good and not upset the big Institute organizational chart? And anyway again, Divisions have vested interests, and a Division of Mineral Dressing would take something away from Coal and something from Industrial Minerals, and any good institutional man can see that a Division would never give anything up. It was all quite confusing, and apparently not too convincing, because then the Milling Committee went ahead and voted unanimously it is a good idea, let's see what the other fellows think about it as well.

AT the Regional meeting in Columbus, Ohio, in September 1949, the authors presented a progress report of the first year's operation with a Hardinge tricone mill in closed circuit with a Dorr hydroscillator. The present report covers our findings on this grinding circuit to January, 1950. In order to clarify our position, the authors wish to state that no invention or discovery is claimed. The Tennessee grinding circuit is simply an engineered arrangement of known equipment arranged to incorporate all of the recognized efficiency factors of comminution as they are known today. As we concluded our first report, it was not clear how effective the Tennessee mode of operation would be on harder ores. The only information we had at that time was that the Bond grindability test at 48-mesh gave 6.04 g of undersize per revolution. A later test on the same sample at 100-mesh reduced this to 2.04 g, which is definitely in the harder ore class, and which makes the reported 8.80 kw-hr per ton of -200-mesh produced a very creditable figure.

THE industrial development of the United States has been stimulated by the presence of high-grade iron ore in the Lake Superior district. These great deposits have been susceptible to economical extraction and are conveniently located for cheap lake vessel transportation to the great consuming centers. The district furnishes from 80 to 85 per cent of the iron ore annually consumed in the United States, and a full understanding of the available supply of this great commodity is so important that it is well to consider whether or not the industrial supremacy and national independence attained as a result of the abundance of cheap ore are permanent. The enormous deposits of high-grade ore available in the Lake Superior district have been the foundation upon which the vast industrial structure of the steel and allied industries has been built. It is extremely important to the country as a whole, and especially to those States and communities now dependent on Lake Superior ore for their prosperity, that their industries shall retain the particular advantages with which they are now endowed, and that a generous supply of high-grade raw material be available for their consumption at a satisfactory cost. The steel industry is so basic and fundamental that any fluctuation in the cost of its finished products as determined by the supply and cost of the raw materials involved in its manufacture will necessarily affect the business of a wide variety of industries which are dependent on it.

FOR the first time other than on occasion of war the people of the United States are experiencing full-scale participation in world affairs. Public concern has seldom been so involved with conditions and events beyond our own continental limits. Our interest is not wholly of recent origin. Over the years the activity of the United States as a world power and an important trading nation brought about the widening of our political interests and the progressive interrelation of our economy with that of the rest of the world. Some may see in our present phase of world-wide activity the natural consequence of our continued growth. Such observers must also be aware that within recent years our importance in world affairs has been considerably increased. For within the space of an extremely short period events have occurred that have literally jet-propelled the United States into the role of a leading participant in the conduct of world affairs. Little of the choice of this role was left to us. The decline of power in western Europe, the ascendancy between the Elbe and the Pacific shore of an obviously antagonistic force, our earnest endeavor to secure international control of atomic energy, the necessity of providing relief and rehabilitation to war-ravaged areas, and the police work that must be done in occupied territories are problems which have risen in great measure without our help-but they cannot be solved without it.

The Zv-Hf-H ternary system was studied between 500° and 900°C at pressures less than 1 atm of hydrogen gas between 1 and 60 at. pct H. A new and unique microgravimentric apparatus was used. Cizanges of slope on pressure-hydrogen composition isothernis delineated phase boundaries. These boundaries separatecl the three regions, a, 0, and y—so designated to correspond to the regions of the Zr-H binary system—from the multiphased areas between them. A eutectoidal decomposition was found with the ß region phase or phases decornposing into a lamellar product on quenching to rool ter,zperatuve. Reproducible decomposition-pressure hysteresis occilrved lnainly at lower hydrogen cornpositions and at lower temperatures across multiplzase vegions between a and 0 and a and y. Tire effects of hqfniur7z on the hydriding charactevistics of zirconiurrz weYe as follows: 1) stabilization of the a and y vegions while destabilizing the 0 region; 2) a/?preciable elevation of the decomposition pressrkres in the multiphase region between the a and /3 field; 3) ~nouenzent of the eutectoid reaction to high te~nperatures; 4) reduction in the total qiiantity of hydrogen absorbed under one atmospheve of Hz p7-essure; and 5) introduction of a split deconzposilion at the eiitectoiclal poinl in pa?? of the ternavy. Assuru~ptions based on an ir-2terstitial vandonl-solulion rtioclel 0.f hydrogen in metals slzowed that the bindit~g energy between solute sites prednnzinatecl at low /i?!dvogen concentrations. However, at high hydrogen contents the entropy was the predorninatlt factor in determining the stability of the Zr-Hf-H al1o.s. This was interpreted to mean a scarcity of filrtlzer itltevslilinl solute sites caused by hydrogen-hydvogen intet-actions in the metal lattice. INTEREST in the reaction of hydrogen with metals has increased in the past few years for the following reasons: 1) the formation or use of high hydrogen potential environments in nuclear reactors; 2) the reaction of hydrogen with alloys in nuclear reactors with the accompanying deleterious effects on the mechanical and corrosion properties; 3) the theoretical implications of thermodynamic data on the theory and rules of alloy formation in the metal-hydrogen systems; 4) the use of hydrogen-containing fuels in rocket engines; 5) the need for a process of making fine metal powders of high-melting reactive metals; and 6) the beneficial impregnation of superconducting alloys with hydrogen. In nuclear pressurized-water reactors, the problem exists of limiting the hydrogen pickup of zirconium alloys which are utilized as fuel cladding, heat shields, and support members. In general, zirconium alloys have good mechanical and corrosion-resistant properties in high-temperature water. However, hydrogen is absorbed from the corrosion reaction between metal and water, greatly accelerating the formation of the corrosion product ZrOz as well as mechanically embrittling the underlying metal. In addition, recent observations1 at zirconium to hafnium welds showed that secondary elements in zirconium can have an appreciable, and somewhat unexpected, effect on hydrogen absorption. This paper lists the thermochemical data in the range 500" to 900°C for the equilibrium reaction of four high-purity Zr-Hf alloys with hydrogen. Phase boundaries and thermodynamic functions are determined while the structural data will be presented in a future paper. In general, the Zr-Hf-H system approximates the well-known, eutectoidal, Zr-H diagram2,3 with modifications introduced through the behavior of hafnium.4,5 The Hf-H system,' published while this work was in progress, provided a consistent trend with the Zr-Hf-H data. PREPARATION OF Zr-Hf ALLOYS Table I presents a complete flow chart of the preparation procedure. The zirconium and hafnium crystal bars were completely immersed in high-purity kerosene and slowly cut into thin wafers. Wafers were then cold-sheared into approximately 1-g pieces, thoroughly cleaned, weighed, and inserted into the furnace. The alloys, B-2, B-4, B-6, and B-8, were then nonconsumable arc-melted under 500 mm of purified argon. Additional purification of the argon was accomplished by melting a large titanium button each time an alloy was re-melted or a different alloy melted. Each alloy button, which weighed 25 g, was remelted four times in an approach to complete homogeneity. Material losses were less than 0.02 wt pct. Alloy buttons were alternately cold-rolled and vacuum-annealed into 10- and 20-mil sheets. Table I1 gives the composition of the four alloys used. Very little elemental segregation existed be-

(Canal Zone Meeting, November, 19]0.) THE sudden decease, April 1, 1910, in Chicago, of Dr. Franklin R. Carpenter was a shock to his- many friends. He died in his sixty-second year, of heart paralysis. To most fellow-members of the Institute who have followed the progress of the. last twenty-five years in the mining and treatment of non-ferrous ores, the work of Dr. Carpenter in that line is familiar ; but very few, even of those who knew him well in the later years, are acquainted with his earlier struggles to satisfy an inborn hunger for knowledge. The story of his life resembles that of the pioneer who opens up new country; overcoming hardships with indomitable courage, meeting doubts and difficulties with an alert and open mind, and exercising in the face of reverses an unconquerable perseverance. It seems appropriate to place on record in the Transactions a brief outline of the life and work of this eminent engineer. During the past 15 years of his life Dr. Carpenter was much interested in genealogy. In the pursuit of this study as an avocation, he traced his own ancestry to the time when ?Hugh," called "le Charpentier" on account of the dexterity with which he had swung his battle-axe as a crusader, settled in Sussex on lands received from William the Conqueror. The Carpenters came to this country with William Penn. A prominent member of the family was Joshua Carpenter, the founder of Christ Church, Philadelphia. Dr. Carpenter's branch of -the family moved from Pennsylvania into that part of Virginia which is now West Virginia, where his grandfather settled in Harrison county, while the grand-uncle went further west, and built the first iron-furnace at Hanging Rock, Lawrence county, Ohio. With either sulfonate or oleate as collector, quartz responds to flotation with moderate additions of calcium only at moderately high pH, where some portion of the activator has hydrolyzed to caOH+ . Calculations of the concentrations of various ionic and precipitated species of calcium and collectors suggest that the products of [(CaOH+) (RSO3)] and [(CaOH+)(01-)] determine whether flotation is obtained under specific conditions. Ion products on the order of 10-12 were calculated for both the sulfonate and oleate systems. The activating effect of calcium ion in nonmetallic flotation systems is of considerable interest because of the normal presence of calcium in natural water. As a result, this phenomenon has received quite some attention in the past. Kraeber and Boppel1 showed that quartz could be activated by calcium above pH 10 with sulfonate as collector. The feasibility of selectively separating quartz from hematite with calcium activation at relatively high pH was demonstrated by Clemmer, Clemmons, Rampacek, Williams, and stacy.2 Cooke and Digre3 showed with a bubble pick-up method that the minimum quantity of calcium ion required as activator for complete pick-up of particles occurs at pH 11.5 for an addition of 20 mg per liter sodium oleate. They also showed that larger additions of calcium (10-fold increase per unit decrease of pH) must be added for complete bubble pick-up as the pH is reduced. Schuhmann and Prakash,4 using a vacuum flotation technique, found that quartz could be floated with moderate additions of calcium chloride and oleic acid at neutral pH, providing the metal ion was present in stoichiometric excess over the quantity needed to form the normal soap with oleic acid. They also reported that calcium will function as an activator only in basic media. More recently, Eigeles and volova5 have shown that essentially complete flotation of quartz is obtained with 6 x 10-4 mole per liter calcium chloride and 1.7 x 10-5 mole per liter sodium oleate at pH 11.6. while no flotation is obtained at about pH 10.9 and below. The importance of adsorption of activator and collector at the air-liquid interface is also demonstrated in these systems. The important role that metal ion hydrolysis assumes in quartz activation systems was also demonstrated recently.6-8 A detailed investigation of metal activation in sulfonate flotation of quartz was undertaken in one system7 and yielded a number of interesting and important observations. Quantification of the data of this system7 to the extent desired was not possible, though, because certain species could neither be ignored nor accounted for accurately. These difficulties can be circumvented when calcium is involved as activator. This detailed analysis was undertaken to obtain a more quantitative explanation of calcium and metal ion activation in quartz flotation. EXPERIMENTAL MATERIALS AND METHODS Sodium alkyl aryl sulfonate9 mol wt 450, and pure potassium oleate were used as collectors. All other reagents used were reagent grade in quality, i.e., n-amyl alcohol as frother, KOH for pH adjustment, and calcium chloride. Conductivity water, made by passing distilled water through an ion exchange column, was used in the investigation. Quartz was prepared by leaching the sized sample (48 x 150 mesh) with HC1 until no iron could be detected in the leach liquor. The experimental equipment and procedure were the same as that described previously.6,10 EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS As the presence of precipitates was noted in all of the systems to which ca++ and collector were added, experiments were undertaken to determine the solubility products of calcium sulfonate and calcium oleate using a nephelometer. With this technique, collector is titrated into a known solution, which in this case was 5 x 10-5 mole per liter CaCl2 at pH 5.5. An exact statistical treatment of a one-dimensional model is used as a basis for evoluating the reliability of certain simplified expressions for the activity of the solute in interstitial solutions, including one obtained from the exact expression by setting the repulsive interaction equal to infinity. The latter approximation is found to be satisfactory at low and moderate concentration if the repulsive interaction is large, even though not infinite. A similar expression (identical if the co-odination number is two) is derived from the quasichemical expression of Lacher, and is recommended as the best available expression for the excess configurational entropy of interstitial solutions with excluded sites. Some reasonable models are discussed, and the nature of the saturated solutions is determined by inspection. Some of the models reduce to the one -dimensional case. An analysis is given of the excess partial entropy of hydrogen in V-H; Nb-H; and To-H solutions. MOST treatments of the statistical thermodynamics of interstitial solid solutions have followed the classic paper1 of Lacher in making the simplifying assumption that the configurational entropy of the solution is ideal. However, it is becoming increasingly apparent that there are many interstitial solutions with very large so lute-solute repulsions, and for these the assumption of ideal entropy is not valid or useful. It is important to realize that with substitutional solutions large repulsions between the component atoms must lead to phase separation, whereas in interstitial solutions the free energy of the solution is not drastically increased by large solute-solute repulsions until intrinsic saturation is reached at the concentration where further solute would be forced to enter a site in which it would experience the repulsive effect of one or more solute atoms already present. In the limiting case of an infinitely large repulsive interaction, the excess free energy would be attributable entirely to excess entropy, the enthalpy of mixing being zero. AS will be shown below, even if the repulsions are less than infinite, a treatment based on an assumption of infinite repulsions may be very satisfactory up to moderately high concentrations of the interstitial component. Often in solutions where large repulsive interactions exist, there are also small interactions — often attractive—between solute atoms in configurations other than that corresponding to the large repulsion. In such cases the excess free energy will consist of an excess entropy term attributable to the large repulsive interactions, and an enthalpy term corresponding to the other small interactions. Nomenclature to differentiate succinctly between important cases would be a convenience. In this paper the nomenclature shown in Table I will be used. In Table I, and in the preceeding discussion, excess quantities are defined in terms of standard states which are pure solid solvent and pure (possibly hypothetical) solid saturated phase of the structure in question. In practice, it is more convenient to choose the interstitial element as a component, and its conventional standard state. This will add a composition-independent term to the excess entropy and the enthalpy. The earliest paper known to the present author which treats the thermodynamics of athermal interstitial solutions was given by schei12 in 1951, but the statistical derivations in that paper are open to criticism. Speiser and Spretnak were the first to give a correct statistical treatment,3 limited, however, to concentrations sufficiently low that the number of empty sites excluded from occupancy by more than one filled site is negligible. The purpose of the present paper is to extend the statistical treatment to more concentrated solutions, and to examine the magnitude of the errors introduced by assuming that the repulsive interactions are infinite when in fact they must be finite. THE QUASICHEMICAL APPROXIMATION Fortunately, a standard method already exists for taking into account the effect of large interactions upon the entropy of mixing. This is the quasi-chemical method, in which the probability of existence of a given pair of solute atoms in a certain proximate configuration is assumed to be proportional to exp(-w/kT), where w is the energy increase of the solution when the two atoms are moved from isolated locations in the solution to the configuration in question. A quasichemical treatment of interstitial solutions was given in 1937 in a widely neglected paper by Lacher.4 The result comes out

THIS apparatus was designed primarily to meet the demand for a quick, efficient stopping to seal off the burning area temporarily during a mine fire, but it can be used in any circumstance where an immediate brattice is required for ventilation control. In using the old style brattice, mine-rescue workers have found it difficult, in smoke-laden drifts and stopes, to erect an effective stopping with wooden frame and canvas. Stulls must first be cut to the proper length, the canvas tacked in place, and the numerous irregularities of the walls and back must be caulked. This operation requires the employment of axes, saws, and hammers, which cannot easily and safely be handled in dense smoke. The fire fighters have often been forced to abandon their brattice, unfinished, because of the rapid approach of the fire, or because of the exhausted sup- ply of oxygen in their breathing apparatus. For the past fifty years or more, the structural features of the Cordil-leran mountain system of western United States have presented some most interesting problems. Any geologist or engineer living in this region, or even making occasional examinations of the mines, will lose much of interest and importance if he is not familiar with the literature. Some of the greatest works on geology have been the result of studies carried on in sections of this region. Among the more important of the earlier works are those of Dutton,l King,2 Gilbert3 and Powell;4 of the more recent Lindgren,5 Ransome,6 Spurr,7 Butler8 and others have contributed much. Many of the papers are largely of scientific interest but even these lay the foundation for the commercial application of the broader features of the geology. I have read many of these works with the keenest interest and pleasure; in fact, some have been read until some of the more important findings seem to be my own. In this paper, however, it is my aim to accept credit for little more than the labor of assembling some of the ideas of others. This is done with the hope that an interesting and valuable discussion will be the result. If some of the ideas presented should

THIS report is a continuation of an earlier one with a similar title,1 to which the reader is referred for such details of procedure as do not appear here. A brief summary will be given of the objects and methods of the research at this time. It was pointed out in the previous paper that properties of magnesium alloys, as re-ported by different workers, often differ. This was thought to be due to differences in the preparation of the specimens tested. The ideal way to compare alloys would be to prepare each of them in so many ways that reasonable assurance would exist that the best properties of each alloy had been developed. The alloys would then be com-pared on the basis of these properties. The treatment actually given the alloys of these studies is necessarily a compromise with completeness. Nevertheless, enough treatments have been given so that a con-siderable degree of assurance exists that the properties obtained are representative of the alloy as such, and not merely of the manner in which it was worked and heat-treated.

FOR years the expression "except rubber, tin, and manganese" has appeared in practically every discussion of the natural resources of the United States. Knowledge that natural rubber is not produced in the United States has now spread from the relatively few who have reason to be interested in the country's basic raw material supplies to all those who ride in automobiles, which means everybody. This "everybody" reads in the daily papers that we have a stock pile of natural rubber and that plenty of synthetic rubber is just around the corner. Statistics as to the United States' rubber requirements and sources of supply are of interest to him only to arrive at an answer to the question : "After taking care of rubber requirements for military purposes, will there be rubber for my automobile and the many other rubber articles I want?" More than 30,000 different rubber articles are manufactured in addition to the tires and tubes which use up about 70 per cent of the rubber supply.

High-temperature heat contents of InSb, GaSb, and AlSb were measured over the temperature range 400" to 1450°K using a diphenyl ether drop calorimeter. Smoothed ualues of the thermal properties, H$ - H:9s, have been derived and are tabulated at even temperature intervals. The heats of fusion of the three compounds were determined as, respectively, 5707 *100, 7780 * 100, and 9800 5 3011 cal per g-atorn at the determined melting points of 797" l°, 985" * , and 1330" * 5°K. The calculated entropies of fusion are, respectively, 7.16 0.12, 7.90 * 0.11, and 7.37 * 0.23 cal per deg per g-atotn. The heat capacities increase substantially on tnelting in contrast to the behauior of structurally related germanium and silicon. Deriations from the Kopp-Neumann rule are negative for solid compounds and positive for the liquid phases. Previously obsevrrd "post melting" in InSb is confirmed. The high-temperature thermal properties of 111-V compounds are presently not well-established, despite the technical importance of these semiconducting cbmpounds. Uncertainties in available heats of fusion and heat contents have seriously hampered thermo-chemical evaluations' and thermodynamic analyses of phase equilibria2"" in these systems. This paper reports results of high-temperature heat content investigations of InSb, GaSb, and AlSb measured in the range 400" to 1450°K employing a diphenyl ether drop calorimeter. Similar measurements for InAs and GaAs will be reported in a following publication.~ EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Samples. High-purity samples of the compounds InSb and GaSb were supplied in the form of crushed crystal fragments by Dr. Carl Thurmond of the Bell Telephone Laboratories and in the form of single crystals by Dr. A. Strauss of the M.I.T. Lincoln Laboratory. Single-crystal samples of semiconductor-grade AlSb were supplied by Dr. W. P. Allred of the Bell and Howell Research Center. Chemical analyses indicated that all compounds were stoichiometric to *0.1 at. pct, which is within the experimental uncertainties of the analyses. Samples were crushed, weighed, and encapsulated in evacuated, thin-walled, fused silica capsules. The capsules were nearly identical in external shape, 2 cm by 2 cm diam, but varied in weight due to differences in wall thickness. One sample of AlSb was contained in a thin-walled, high-purity alumina cup encapsulated in silica and used for heat content determinations of liquid AlSb. The capsule materials showed no visual evidence of reaction with any of the compounds. The sample and capsule weights are given in Table I. Calorimeter. A Bunsen-type calorimeter, similar in design to a previously described instrument6 but employing diphenyl ether (C6H5)'0 as the calorimetric substance, was used for measurements of heat contents above 300.0°K, the melting point of diphenyl ether. Heat input to the calorimeter caused isothermal melting of diphenyl ether, and the resulting increase in volume was measured by displacement of mercury from the calorimeter into a 200 cm horizontal, calibrated capillary, 1.25 * 0.01 mm diam, or into a weighed beaker. The advantages of diphenyl ether over water have been previously pointed out7 and include: i) an increase by a factor of 3.5 in sensitivity as measured by the ratio of the volume change to the enthalpy change on fusion, ii) the smaller required extrapolation from the melting point to the standard temperature of 298.17"K, and iii) the positive volume change on fusion of diphenyl ether in contrast to the contraction which occurs on fusion of ice. Diphenyl ether was purified by fractional crystallization to 99.95 mol pct as determined from the melting point depression with fraction crystallized. During assembly of the calorimeter, the ether was repeatedly outgassed under high vacuum to remove dissolved air. The calorimeter receiving vessel consisted of an 8-in.-long by 1:-in.-diam copper tube with twelve horizontal 3-in.-diam radiator "fins" for dissipating heat to the surrounding mantle of diphenyl ether. IN reviewing the field of mineral industry education last year reference was made to recent assertions, mostly emanating from sources not in a position to know the facts, that mining engineers as a class are disappearing. Attention might also then have been called to a statement that appeared in Engineering News, August 11, 1892 (p. 130), ". . . the great absolute decline in number of mining graduates, which last amounts almost to a complete abandonment of mining engineering as a distinct branch of study." THE angles between the crystallographic planes in cubic crystals have been given by Bozorth,¹ in magnesium, zinc, and cadmium by Salkovitz,² and in tin by Nicholas. The determination of the orientation of single crystals and the study of plastic deformation require the knowledge of these angles and are often facilitated by use of a standard projection. Tables of these angles and standard projections have not been published for titanium or zirconium which have c/a ratios considerably less than those hexagonal metals for which this data is available. Accordingly, Table I has been prepared giving these angles. Fig. 1 presents a standard (0001) projection of titanium. THOSE that attended the seventeenth International Geological Congress held in Russia last summer had an excellent opportunity to gather data and to form impressions on the progress made in the industrialization of the country, particularly with regard to the mineral industries.
