In 1925, Harry Howard Stout, then metallurgist for Phelps Dodge Corporation, while investigating the cleaning of cathode copper by various gases at elevated temperatures below the melting point of the metal, observed in the laboratory that particles of pure copper heated in a closed tube filled with hydrogen seemingly "stuck together." By further investigation he found that there was actual crystal growth across the boundaries of the particles of pure metal; in other words, there was a complete new crystal realignment and growth throughout the newly formed copper mass. It was coalescence, not adhesion; the several particles had become one unit. From this discovery has been developed the coalescence process, whereby copper of cathode purity is squirted out in semifabricated form from an extrusion press, by the application of about 3000 tons pressure on a 10-in. piston. Stout decided that cathode copper produced by electrolytic deposition was the logical source of the pure copper required for the coalescence process, but as there was no way of reducing the ordinary tough commercial cathodes to the small particles required he was confronted by a serious problem at the outset. Under his direction, this problem was solved by William H. Osborn and Harry Howard Stout, Jr. They developed the process and technique for producing cathode copper in brittle, friable form, and to them must be given the greater part of the credit for this phase of the development program as well as for that relating to the gas cleaning of the cathode particles. Concurrently, the three metallurgists worked on the problem of effecting a complete union of the cathode particles. Adequate washing was all that was needed to free the particles from electrolyte solution and slimes. A press was designed to produce briquettes of the proper porosity and density, and a method was devised of removing surface oxidation from the particles of cathode, by treatment in an atmosphere of deoxidizing gas at an elevated temperature. The temperature was determined at which the surface cleansing and preheating could be done in one operation, and for this a charging and preheating furnace in which there is maintained a positive pressure of deoxidizing gas atmosphere was designed. And finally, a method of feeding the heated briquettes of deoxidized cathode copper into an extrusion press without contamination from the air was evolved. For the final stage, a press was required because not only heat but pressure was required to obtain complete growth of the new crystals between the cathode particles as well as the elimination of all voids or non-coalesced areas. All essential stages of the process are protected by patents or patent applications in the United States and principal foreign countries, and the copper is produced on a commercial scale.

Discussion of the Paper of Dr. H. M. Chance, presented at the Lake Superior Meeting, September, 1904. EDWARD HALSE, Puerto Berrio, Colombia, So. Amer. (communication to the Secretary*) : The Taviche mining-district is generally known as a Taviches," being named from the two villages called respectively San Pedro Taviche and San Jeronimo Taviche. It is so called by José G. Aguilera, in his paper on the Geographical and Geological Distribution of the Mineral Deposits of Mexico;' and in published reports by the late N. W. Rudston Read ;2 and by Juan de Dios Villarello.3 The region is a large one, measuring about 24 miles long and 7 miles wide. Dr. Chance, in his interesting paper, tells us very little about the nature of the ores, and, with regard to the geology of the district, contents himself with observing that ? the country, as a rule, consists of eruptive rocks; and no evidences of sedimentary strata appear near the mines.? The latter part of the above statement is hardly correct. The formation is mainly eruptive, being hornblende-audesite of Tertiary age, which is limited on the east by the calcareous (Cretaceous) formation, and on the west by the Huronian rocks of Ocotlan. Limestone is seen close to the Santa Càtarina mine, at the northern end of the region. In the surface-working known as La Cueva, a little northeast of San Pedro, limestone forms the eastern wall of the deposit which consists of spots (moscas) of pyrargyrite in white opaque or transparent quartz. FROM prehistoric times to our own day man has struggled against extremes of climate. Human life, originating in semi-tropical or temperate areas, was unable to progress into the northern latitudes until fire was discovered and some form of clothing provided. It was found possible to maintain life even in the hottest parts of the tropics, but only at a great sacrifice of comfort and efficiency compared with the more temperate zones, or in cooler areas with the protection of clothing and artificial heat. It was no accident, but the natural result of climatic conditions, that efficiency became the greatest and civilization the most advanced in areas where the natural climate was favorable, or in cooler zones where protection against severe cold could be se-cured by relatively simple methods of conserving or producing heat.

THE following notes, prepared in 1908, as the result of a personal examination and extensive explorations under my direction in 1906, have been revised and greatly augmented after two subsequent visits and further explorations in 191.0. The hard iron-ores of the south coast of Oriente Province, in the island of Cuba, have been known for many years, in fact one mine has been in operation for more than 20 years ; but it is only within the past four years that the large mantle-deposits of brown ores of the north coast have attracted serious attention. A. C. Spencer 1 has described these ores in a paper, entitled Three Deposits of Iron Ore in Cuba, which refers to the Mayari, Moa, and Cubitas deposits. C. M. Weld,2 in a scholarly paper on The Residual Brown Iron-Ores of Cuba, has discussed the character and possible genesis of these deposits with particular reference to the Moa field, calling attention also to the Taco and Navas fields in addition to those described by Spencer. Descriptive articles with reference to the Mayari field, and a few words about the Moa deposit, have also appeared.3 It is the purpose of the present paper to give some account of the exploration of the Moa deposit and to call attention to its commercial importance. LOCATION. The Moa district is situated on the north coast of the . Province of Oriente, which is the most easterly province of the island of Cuba. AT the Annual Meeting of the A.1.M.E. last February, Cornelius F. Kelley, chairman of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., was presented with the Charles F. Rand Memorial Medal for "conspicuous success as administrative head of great enter- prises engaged in the production of nonferrous metals at home and abroad; for inspiring leadership of an organization that has trained able engineers for service wherever ores are mined and metals are recovered; and for enhancing the prestige of metal mining in the financial and industrial world." Mr. Kelley's acceptance speech follows: I am not unmindful of the fact that the distinction is not to be considered a personal one, but that by the language of the citation itself it is rather a recognition of the service that has been performed by the many trained men of an industrial organization that in the arts of mining and metallurgy and in the fabrication of metal products has performed a distinct service to the industry and to mankind. In that spirit, the award is accepted, and on behalf of the organization I represent and myself, I thank you and assure you that the honor is deeply appreciated.

To extend our knowledge of the flotation behavior of sulphide minerals, the response of the following minerals to ethyl xanthate as collector was studied by captive bubble and cylinder flotation tests: antimonite (Sb2S3), arsenopyrite (FeAsS), covellite (CuS), rnarcasite (FeS2), orpiment (As&.), pyrrhotite (FeS) and tetrahedrite (4CU2S, Sb2S3). Lollingite (FeAs2) was also exarnined to determine if its behavior could be correlated with that of pyrite or rnarcasite (FeS2. Experimental Method Mineral for Flolation and Contact Tests Mineral was prepared in the manner a1ready described1 and its behavior both freshly ground and "oxidized" was studied. Tests in which the mineral was allowed to oxidize for various periods showed that a uniform response to xanthate was reached in two days or less. Oxidation Products The soluble oxidation products from most of the above minerals were measured and their effect on the flotation of the mineral studied. The mineral samples were wet ground to minus-52 mesh and deslimed, and 20 g of this material placed in 200 ml of distilled water of a measured pH value, and CO2-free air bubbled through each suspension at a constant rate (about I bubble/sec) for 5 days. It has been shown1 that the size of the mineral is unimportant in the rate of formation , oxidation products and that probably the supply of oxygen to the mineral is the rate-determining step. At the end of 5 days the pH value of the 'supernatant liquid was measured again, the mineral filtered off and the soluble products determined. Methods for estimation of sulphur acids, ferrous and ferric iron and copper have already been described.l No satisfactory method was found for antimony. Arsenic was estimated as the arsenate.2 Flotation of "Unoxidized" Minerals with Ethyl Xanthate as Collector Fig I to 3, 4. 6, show the effect of alkali and cyanide as depressants for the minerals with 25 mg potassium ethyl xanthate per liter as collector at 35°C. Wark and Cox8 have shown that with ethyl xanthate as collector, galena, pyrite and chalcopyrite show a greater tolerance to cyanide and hydroxyl ions at room temperature than at 35°C Covellite (Fig I), marcasite (Fig 2) and pyrrhotite (Fig 3) behave similarly. IN a previous note1 it was pointed out that the available information suggests a distinct correlation between the occurrence of the CsCl-type ordered structures formed in equi-atomic binary alloys of transition elements and the location of the components in the periodic table. A definite increase in the bond strength between unlike atoms, as compared with that between like atoms, is indicated when, in binary alloys of iron group elements, the other component is changed from chromium to vanadium or tantalum, to titanium. Laves and Wallbaum,2 eported a CsCl-type ordered structure for the stable intermediate phase at the equi-atomic composition in the Ti-Fe system (and also in the Ti-Ru and Ti-Os systems). On the other hand, Tagaya, Nenno, and Nishiyama8 found no ordering of this kind in the body-centered-cubic solid solutions in the Cr-Fe system. It was concluded' that the occurrence of a CsC1-type ordered phase of intermediate stability may be expected in the V-Fe system. Preliminary results were described: suggesting that at least some degree of order does exist in the equi-atomic alloy VFe, annealed at 1200° C and quenched in cold water. Using CrK radiation, at least one weak superlattice line was found in the X-ray diffraction pattern which could be indexed as (100). and which disappeared, as expected, when FeK radiation was used. It was found more recently that the impurity phase (presumably VN), previously giving rise to additional X-ray diffraction lines and thus preventing definite indentification of the (111) superlattice line,' can be eliminated by preparing the alloy by arc melting in a helium atmosphere. The alloy specimen melted in this manner had clean surfaces and showed very littte, if any, nitride phase in the microstructure after annealing in vacuum at 1250°C and quenching. The relative intensity of the (100). superlattice line with CrK radiation was greatly increased and, in addition, a fairly strong (Ill) , superlattice line and even a detectable (210) , super- lattice line was obtained, when the powder produced by filing from the 1250°C annealed and quenched specimen was reannealed in vacuum at 625°C for 1 hr. By using a cellulose acetate film as a filter in front of the photographic film in order to absorb the soft radiation resulting from air fluorescence, the background intensity could be reduced considerably in relation to the intensity of the diffraction lines. All three superlattice lines, (100),, (111)., and (210)a, disappeared, as expected, when a radiation other than CrK, was used.1 For the powder reannealed at 625ºC, the strongest lines of the s pattern also appeared weakly, indicating that during an: nealing at 625°C a small amount of transformation took place from the body-centered-cubic to the u phase. However, since all superlattice lines to be expected in the 0 angle range used were actually very clearly present, it was evident that the high temperature body-centered-cubic phase had transformed into a CsCl-type ordered structure before much s phase could form. Reannealing filings for 1 hr at 700°C resulted in complete transformation into the u phase. After 1 hr at 650°C the transformation into IT was not quite complete, the strongest body-centered-cubic diffraction lines were still present, although fairly weak, and only the (100), super-lattice line was detectable (extremely weak). These findings not only confirm the previous conclusionsL as to the existence of a CsCl-type ordered structure in the Fe-V system, but they also indicate that this metastable ordered structure forms at about 600°C preceding the formation of the stable s phase, while at 1250°C the disordered body-centered-cubic phase is stable. The faint (loo) , super-lattice line previously observed in specimens quenched from 1200°C was probably due to the fact that the quenching of the powder in an evacuated fuse:! quartz capsule was not fast enough to prevent completely the ordering reaction on cooling. The present results conform with the suggestion that the A-B bond, in relation to the A-A and B-B bonds, increases in strength from CrFe to VFe to TiFc. It is, therefore, of interest to compare the measured values of the average atomic diameter for these three alloys with the corresponding average atomic diameters calculated from the atomic radii of the elements concerned. ALMOST everyone in any of the five counties embracing the great East Texas field depends heavily upon oil for his living whether or not he actually owns a well or piece of royalty himself. Oil is a natural resource that, when utilized, spreads its benefits over a vast area and into many channels. Depending then almost entirely upon agriculture: what is now known as the East Texas oil field a decade ago had a scattered farming population. For many of its people, tomatoes and other vegetable crops coupled with the old southern stand-by of cotton, furnished an adequate living and a small cash surplus. Some farm families on the red hills, however, were not far re- moved from the sowbelly and black- eyed peas, or cornpone and potlikker, standard of living. Kilgore of that day, was a village of less than 850 per- sons. Longview, with just over 5000, apparently had reached the limit of its growth. Tyler was an overgrown farming town of around 17,000 persons, de- pending largely upon the agricultural income of Smith County and surrounding territory for which it was a trading center.

From the chemical, metallurgical, and mineralogical points of view, the importance of thermodynamic data for metal-sulphides and sulphur dissolved in molten metal has long been realized. Such data will give a basis for thermo-dynamic calculations of processes such as roasting and the distribution of sulphur between molten metal and slags. Furthermore, it will help us understand the chemical forces which tie sulphur to the metal and to the melt. Thermodynamic studies of solid sulphides and the equilibria between solid sulphides and metals have been carried out in a rather large number of cases by several investigators. An excellent review of this work is given by Kelley.1 On the other hand, very little is known about the thermodynamic properties of molten sulphides and of sulphur dissolved in molten metal. The only system which previously has been investigated in this respect is the iron/sulphur system. The purpose of the present investigation was primarily to obtain further data for metalisulphur melts and the system silver/sulphur was chosen, not because this system was expected to be of special interest in itself, but because the silver/sulphur system is a typical example of a metal/sulphur system. Because of the low melting temperatures, the work could be carried out without appreciable furnace and refractory difficulties. The sulphur in this system possesses a rather high escaping tendency compared to most other metal/sulphur systems. By the method employed (reaction with hydrogen to form hydrogen sulphide) this gives ratios Ph2s/Ph2 up to 0.30, which may be determined accurately. 'rhermodynamic investigations of the heterogeneous reaction Ag2S +H2 —+ 2Ag + H2S have previously been carried out by Pelabon,2 Keyes and Felsing,3 Jellineb and Zakowski,4 Wat-anabe,6 and Britzke and Kapustinsky.6 Their results are in rather poor agreement. Experimental Part PRINCIPLE In the present invehgation the escaping tendency of sulphur from the condensed phase was determined by the reaction: S + H2 = H2S The ratio Ph2s/Ph2 is at constant temperature, directly proportional to the escaping tendency of sulphur and to its chemical activity in the condensed phase. (This ratio will subsequently be denoted by H2S/H2.) From this ratio and its variation with temperature and with change in the com- position of the condensed phase, thermodyrlamic quantities such as free energy and heat of reaction can be derived. The apparatus used is shown in Fig 1. The silver/sulphur alloy was placed in a crucible inside a refractory tube and mounted inside the furnace to the left. The tube was a part of a closed, gas-tight system in which the gas mixture could circulate until equilibrium was established. Circulation was maintained by the glass propeller to the right, driven by an external magnet, and promoted by the chimney action of the furnace. The gas passed up through the furnace, down into the crucible where it came in contact with the alloy, passed rapidly up through a narrow tube and out of the hot zone. After equilibrium was established between the gas and the condensed phase, the composition of the gas mixture was determined from its density. In its circulation, the gas mixture passed through a chamber (lower right on Fig 1) containing a buoyancy-balance, where the density of the gas was determined by magnetic balancing. X-ray diffraction, differential thermal, ad rnetallo-graphic methods were used to establish the Dy-Pb Phase diagram. Lead additions lower the 1377°C transformation temperature of dysprosium to 1360°C leading to an inverted peritectic reaction. The 327°C melting point of lead is lowered by dysprosium additions to about 326°C yielding a eutectic reaction. A second eutectic reaction occurs at 13.3 at. pct Pb and 1200°C. The dysprosium-richest intermetallic compound DysPb3 melts congruently at 1695°C and crystallizes in the hexagonal Mn5Si3 (D8,) type structure. The peritectic decomposition temperatures for the remaining compounds are Dy5Pb, at 1555C, DyPb2 at 955C, and DyPb3 at 880°C. A fifth compound near the DyPb stoichiometry exists over a 310°C temperature range decomposing at 1130°C by means of an inverted peritectic reaction and melting incongruently at 1440°C. The crystal structures of the compounds are discussed. A systematic study of the rare earth-lead alloy systems is underway in an effort to supply information concerning the alloying behavior of the rare earth metals. The Dy-Pb phase diagram is the fourth system to be investigated in this study. The Yb-Pb,1 Y-Pb,2 and Eu-Pb 3 diagrams have been published recently. Utilization of the rare earth series of metals as a research tool in this manner should yield a better understanding of alloy formation. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Materials. The lead used in this investigation was obtained from Cominco Products, Inc., and was specified to be 99.99 pct pure. The dysprosium was prepared in this Laboratory by the calcium reduction of the fluoride followed by distillation of the dysprosium. The major impurities in the dysprosium in ppm are: A1 (<40), Ca (400), Er (<50), Gd (<200), Ho (<200), Mg (<50), Si (30), Ta (400), Tb (<100), Y (<50), 0 (651, H (15), N (not detected), F (430), C (35). Alloy Preparation. Most of the alloys were prepared by melting weighed amounts of dysprosium and lead in sealed tantalum crucibles. The tantalum crucibles were sealed by are-welding in a He-Ar atmosphere welding chamber. Thus the alloys are in contact with He-Ar at about 1 atm pressure. Homogenization was achieved by holding them in the liquid state for about 1 hr, cooling, inverting the crucibles, remelting, and repeating the process at least twice. Since these alloys were prepared in sealed tantalum crucibles, chemical analysis for final composition was thought to be unnecessary. No detectable reaction of these alloys with the tantalum crucible was observed by metallographic examination. Metallographic evidence was also used to confirm the homogeneity of some of the alloys prepared in this manner. The compositions of a few alloys, which were prepared by nonconsum-able are-melting, were corrected for the small weight losses involved by assuming that the weight loss is due to vaporization of lead. The specimens obtained from the alloy samples were prepared under a dry-argon atmosphere because they were rapidly attacked by air and moisture. Thermal Analysis. Differential thermal analysis methods were used to determine the liquidus curves and reaction horizontals of the system. Both Pt vs Pt + 13 pct Rh and W + 5 pct Re vs W + 26 pct Re thermocouples were used to measure the temperature. An X- Y recorder was used to record the specimen temperature and differential electromotive force between the specimen and molybdenum standard. The arrest temperatures were measured potentiometri-cally. The accuracy limits (* values) associated with the reaction temperatures obtained by this method were estimated on the basis of both the reproducibility of the particular temperature value and the accuracy of the thermocouple at a given temperature. Liquidus temperatures were obtained from cooling arrest data while both heating and cooling arrest data were used to establish the horizontals of the diagram. Heat treatments during the thermal analyses of the alloys between 40 and 70 at. pct Pb were necessary in order to approach equilibrium conditions. The samples were held at temperatures between the various peritectic horizontals for l to 2 hr before the thermal analyses were continued. The entire range of compositions was investigated at the expense of a minimum amount of materials by adding appropriate amounts of lead to master alloys. More than sixty alloys were analyzed by this differential thermal method and for each alloy the results given herein are taken from two or three heating and cooling cycles. X-Ray and Metallographic Methods. Slice specimens for metallography and powder specimens for X-ray diffraction were prepared from rod-shaped samples which had been melted in sealed 0.62 5-cm-diam tantalum crucibles. The specimens were heat-treated in sealed tantalum crucibles which were protected by sealing them in argon-filled quartz ampules. Quenching was accomplished by breaking the ampules in ice water after heat treatment. X-ray powder specimens were sealed in 0.3-mm-diam glass capillaries under a dry-argon atmosphere. Copper, iron, and chromium radiation were used to obtain the powder patterns for these alloys. More than 150 powder patterns were obtained for specimens of various compositions and heat treatments. The appraisal of an oil lease may often be mad,? through production decline analysis, which requires description of the functional relationship between the oil production rate and either cumulative production or time. Heretofore, attempts to define the function appropriate to a given set of production data have depended to some extent on subjective procedures. The purpose here is to introduce an objective solution, obtained by combining the principle of least squares with the theory of equations. MATHEMATICAL ANALYSIS The fundamental differential equation appropriate to a general class of decline curves may be written. Solution of Eq. 1 for general boundary conditions may be written in terms of either the cumulative oil production or time: These equations constitute the mathematical expression of the so-called hyperbolic decline. Their complete description for a given set of production data requires the numerical evaluation of the three parameters1.&apos;, n, D, and (go),. For the special case of n = 0, Eq. 2 becomes q. = (q.), - DiN with the corresponding expression in terms of time being q. = (qa),e...........(5) Similarly, for the special case of n = 1, Eq. 3 becomes with the corresponding expression in terms of cumula- tive oil production being q. = (q.),e " &apos;.......(7) Eqs. 4 and 5 constitute the mathematical description of the so-called exponential decline; Eqs. 6 and 7 are the mathematical description of the harmonic decline.&apos;,&apos; Returning to the hyperbolic expressions, Eqs. 2 and 3 may also be written, q: = sNp + b........ Note that both Eqs. 8 and 9 are linear in either time or cumulative production with respect to an exponential function of the production rate. In other words, a straight line relationship results for both variables when associated with the appropriate power of q,. This fact is of prime importance in the application of statistical analysis. . STATISTICAL ANALYSIS For a given oil lease, the time, production rate and cumulative production are recorded records. To establish predictive formulas from Eqs. 2 and 3, it remains to determine numerical values for the three parameters [n, D, and (q,) .] through an investigation of the past history. Upon interpreting a, s and b as parameters, Eq. 8 may be expressed for every time interval of interest, i, over the past history as follows. (q,): = s(Np), + b........(10) In general, Eq. 10 will not be satisfied exactly, because of the assumptions in the expression of Eq. 1, and the errors and anomalies universally associated with production data. ALL mine ore here must be concentrated before shipment, which involves selective flotation. Three products are made: lead, zinc, and pyrite concentrates. The equipment and practice are so well outlined in the accompanying flow sheet that only a few amplifying remarks are necessary. After crushing at the mine to approximately 4 in., the ore is carried by aerial tram about 4 1/2, mi. to the mill. From 1800 to 2000 metric tons per day, excluding Sundays, is thus transported. At the mill, the buckets are hand-tipped into the bins. After crushing to pass a ¼ -in. square opening, the ore may be stored in reserve crushed-ore bins or ball-mill feed bins as desired. Total bin capacity at the mill is about 4000 metric tons. The concentrator is arranged in three independent grinding sections, each fed from its own storage bin. Grinding operations follow standard practice, with ball mills in single-stage closed circuit with classifiers, the overflow from which is delivered to the lead circuit rougher flotation machines,
