The ever increasing array of information concerning the measurement of the effect of the welding process on the properties of a steel is an indication of the tremendous effort that is being expended in this field. The methods that have been considered may be divided into two groups: first, those that measure directly the effect of welding on the ductility of a steel, and, second, those that observe the change in some property, such as the hardness of the heat-affected zone, and assume a direct correlation between this change and the resultant ductility. The nick-bend test is a direct method designed for studying the effect of welding on the ductility of a steel. The test specimen (Fig. I) consists of a bar cut from a plate with a bead weld on the surface. The specimen is prepaxed with a saw-notch placed so as to restrict deformation to the heat-affected zone under the bead weld when tested as a static bend. Failure is caused by rupture of the low-ductility metal in the heat-affected zone. The angle at maximum load is used as an index of the effect of the welding process on the material. In the development of the nick-bend test considerable scatter was noted in some of the results, although the agreement of duplicate specimens welded at the same time and tested consecutively was excellent. Upon further investigation it was found that the change in ductility was dependent upon the interval of time between the welding operation and the testing of the specimen. For the six steels of Fig. 2, the angle at maximum load in lour cases was doubled and in one case was tripled. All steels that have been studied show an improvement in the angle of bend for longer intervals between welding and testing. The rapid expansion of the natural gas industry in this country during the past three or four years has necessitated the construction of a number of long and comparatively large diameter high-pressure pipe lines This period of expansion and construction is still at high tide, and the current year will doubtless surpass all prior years in mileage and capacity of gas line installation. The fundamental economics of the business of long-distsrier transportation of natural gas may be briefly and simply stated, although most careful consideration must be given the actual determination and integration of the several more important factors which determine the ultimate success or failure of such a project. Reduced to its simplest form, a sound natural gas transportation project requires: 1. A competent source of gas, where the combination of quantity of gas available, cost of production, and longevity meet the given requirements. 2. A market, reasonably certain to endure in the face of any probable competition, of satisfactory size and price, and having a sufficiently favorable load factor. 3. A cost of installation of pipe line systen and an operating cost such as will, with honest and reasonably efficient management, afford a net operating return sufficient to attract the necessary capital required. In a11 new projects of this kind it is necessary that thehe three cssentials to ultimate success be assured. Hence the necessity of competent surveys of gas supply, and of market, both industrial and domestic. The prudent engineer will allow for "factors of safety" in reaching his conclusions just as he would in the design of a bridge. This paper deals primarily with but one of the major considerations enumerated above, I. e, the economic design of the pipe line system. The problem of segregation and cavities in steel ingots is a subject which has given and is still giving metallurgists, engineers, and operators matter for serious consideration. This question has come more into prominence lately in the United States, due largely to the desire of railroad engineers to secure a better rail than they have obtained ill the past, as the service they demand is increasing in severity; and no doubt manufacturers will be able to meet what is required of them. The rails here are as good as those made in other countries, but the conditions of service and the extremes of climate are more Revere and consequently more breakages occur. Various reasons have been advanced to explain why rails may not be as good in quality to-day as in the past. Some engineers consider that modern methods of manufacturing, designed chiefly to obtain large output, tend to reduce the standard of excellence of more deliberate methods. Others think that 4-ton ingots are worse than those of 2 tons. Again, it is stated that the 100-ton heat in one ladle is too large, and is a step in the wrong direction in casting. My experience upon the question of the size of the ingot is that in rolling rails of from 85-to 100-lb. sections, the range of ingot is only practically such that the difference in the size does not help in the question of segregation, cavities, or blow-holes. I call attention to two ingots from work done at Pencoyd, Pa., 16 years ago. These ingots were bottom-poured, cast at the same time from the same center-runner, the one being 20 by 24 in. and the other 13 by 16 in. in size. El Segundo field is about 14 miles southwest of the central portion of the city of Los Angeles, immediately adjacent to the town of El Segundo and the Standard Oil Company's El Segundo refinery site. The field is served and bisected by several major highways connecting the beach cities on the west side of the Los Angeles Basin. The exact location of the field and its position with respect to other producing areas is shown on the map covering this portion of the Basin (Fig. I). The Republic Petroleum Co. discovered the first commercial production in the area when it completed its El Segundo No. 1 (sec. 18, T. 3 S. R. 14 W.) at a depth of 7402 ft. on Aug. 24, 1935, flowing at the rate of about 400 bbl. per day, 28" gravity oil. The producing horizon in this well consists of about 72 ft. of conglomerate and schist conglomerate situated below the nodular shale (Miocene). The true (or solid) schist (Franciscan) was encountered and penetrated some 20 ft. in the bottom of the hole. This paper gives a report on the history of development and oil production to date, and also submits the writer's interpretation of structural conditions as determined from such development. The limited development, together with the complex and variable nature of the producing horizon, makes any interpretation of the structure at present only tentative, and any forecast for a given well extremely hazardous. History of Oil and Gas Production The El Segundo field has produced approximately 1,920,000 bbl. of oil. It has 27 producing wells and 14 drilling wells or locations. The present daily rate of production is about 13,400 bbl. The production history of the field to date is shown in Table 1. The principal companies operating or owning leases in this field are: Caminol Company, Geo. F. Getty, Inc., Ohio Oil Co., Republic Petroleum Co., Pacific Western Oil Corporation, Royalty Service Corporation, Richfield Oil Corporation, Standard Oil Company of California, The Texas Company, Union Oil Company.

This report presents the comments of members of the Institute's Sub-committee on Physics of Mine Ventilation on the proposals of a special committee of the Institute of Mining Engineers (London). This report is as follows: THEORY OF MINE VENTILATION Abstract of a report submitted June 16, 1925, to the Council of The Institution of Mining Engineers by a Special Committee Laws of Flow of Aib The law of flow of air in mine galleries is, at present, expressed by two formulas differing slightly in shape but both derived from the original hydraulic formulas of Chezy and others. These formulas are: The Atlcinson Formula.—Pa = KsV2, which in transformation becomes a3 where P = pressure producing flow; K = coefficient of friction; s = surface of the mine galleries; V = velocity of flow; Q = rate of flow; a = area of mine galleries. This formula is especially applicable to mine galleries, but is unwieldy in application, as in many problems we are dealing with changes produced in the same set of airways when K, s, and a are assumed not to change, and the only variables are P and Q. Great uncertainty prevails as to the exact values to be assigned to the coefficient K in different types of airway, as different workers have given widely differing values. This formula assumes: (I) That resistance to flow is independent of the pressure within the gallery. (2) That changes in volume within the limits of pressure ordinarily met with may be neglected. (3) That changes in density and viscosity and mode of flow of the air may be neglected. (4) That the coefficient K is a constant. (5) That P is proportional to the square of the velocity. We cannot find any reliable experimental work leading us to conclude how far these assumptions are justifiable in mining practice. COAL MINING, as well as all the other major in-dustries of Russia, is controlled by the Soviet Gov-ernment by means of organizations in each dis-trict, known as "Trusts," such as the "Kisel Coal Trust" in the Urals, the "Donugol Trust" in the Ukraine, etc., and each Trust functions as a unit, reporting direct to the chief of the department of the government at Moscow. The responsible head of each Trust is usually a mem-ber of the Communist party and, filtered through his organization, one generally finds a fair proportion of Communists in "key" or important positions, such as purchasing agents and local managers or superinten-dents, but in the majority of places requiring technical or professional knowledge, or trained brains and ex-perience, little or no attention is paid to a man's political opinion provided, of course, he "behaves himself." These different Trusts were authorized or ordered by the Central Committee at Moscow to investigate the methods of mining and type of mines developed in all other coal producing, countries of the world, and after a period of several years of intensive investigation and study reported back to headquarters that the modern American mines were the most efficient, recommending that the program for the rehabilitation of the Russian coal mining industry should follow the lines of American practice. The Trusts were then authorized to negotiate with American engineering firms for technical service for mine designs, and invited Americans to send commis-sions to Russia to prepare and submit to the Technical Council one or more projects for a complete modern American-type operation adapted to the local conditions. A "project" is a preliminary set of designs on the entire mine, top and bottom, with specifications. cost estimates, production costs, schedule of operation, budget of expen-diture, etc., and is quite an elaborate and sizable under-taking-I might say, it took six of us working tooth and nail for over three months to finish our first project.

IN CHAPTER I it was shown that the approximate market value of the copper produced at the twelve big Porphyry mines from 1905 to 1931, inclusive, was $2,821,300,000. This represented the refined metal ready for shipment to the consumer. In addition, at least $50,000,000 worth of gold and silver had been produced, more than $30,000,000 coming from the Utah mine alone. Consequently, the revenues totaled about $2,871,300,000, as shown in Table 58. Society paid this sum for a given quantity of metal that it wanted for industrial use. Where did the money go? Who were the direct beneficiaries of the creation of this new wealth? These questions this chapter will answer in a general way. Because some necessary data are not available, an exact tabulation in detail can not be made, but Table 58 is believed to reflect with reasonable accuracy the disposition made of the aggregate income from the twelve operations. The word "operations" is used advisedly because the complexity of corporate relations precludes the possibility of picking out companies, as could be done if each enterprise were an independent entity such as Miami, for example. Some explanation of the table and some elaboration of the items under "Outgo" is desirable. In the first place, it is assumed that the sum of surplus current assets existing in various treasuries at the end of 1931 was substantially equivalent to the “new” money that actually was put into the enterprises as a group. Less than $20,000,000 in new capital was realized from securities sold by the Utah Copper Co., the remaining funds coming from earnings. In respect to some of the others, such as Chuquicamata, Inspiration, and Andes, the amount of new money was much greater. During the early period of the construction of the Illinois and Michigan Canal, about 1838, in excavating for the canal, where the present town of Utica stands, hydraulic limestone was discovered, and its value was recognized. A kiln for calcining and a mill for grinding were erected, and the cement was used in the construction of the locks of the canal. This property was subsequently bought by the present owner, Mr. James Clark, and the work has been continued to the present time in much the same primitive manner as it was begun. The bed is exposed in the Illinois River valley by stripping off a few feet of the covering rock. It is from 4 feet to 6 feet 9 inches thick, and nearly level, dipping gently to the northeast. The Utica Cement Company's establishment, which is two miles west of Utica and two miles east of La Salle, was an outgrowth of the Illinois geological survey. The writer was in charge of the district which included La Salle county, and, in working out the details of the geology of that county, discovered, below the Utica bed, another workable hydraulic limestone, which makes its appearance in the northern bluff of the Illinois River valley, rising above the water level at the point where the company's works are established. This cement group, of which there are several thin beds, lies just below the St. Peter's sandstone, with a few feet intermediate of transition-rock, which appears to represent the Calciferous, and is exhibited in place, in concretionary form, at the top of the bluff. The hydraulic beds are very regular, and the one worked by the company is 10 feet thick; or, speaking more definitely, there are two beds, separated by 18 inches of sandstone, lying about two feet above the bottom, and the two beds are worked as one, the sandstone being first cut out and removed, to prevent mixture. One of the most unexpected and unusual mining disasters which have ever been recorded in the Pennsylvania anthracite region, or, in fact, in any coal-mining district, occurred in the northern anthracite field near Nanticoke, Luzerne County, about 10 o'clock on Friday morning, December 18, 1885. This accident caused the death of twenty-six persons, a larger number than had perished in any catastrophe in the anthracite mines since that which occurred at the West Pittston mine in 1871. The Nanticoke disaster resulted from a " cave-in " in the roof of a portion of the Ross coal-bed workings from Slope No. 1 of the Susquehanna Coal Company, by which a large body of quicksand, gravel, rock- and coal-boulders, and water broke through the roof of the mine, filling up a large extent of the workings, until not only the water, but also the rock material, flowed out at the mouth of the mine. Immediately over the point where the "cave-in" occurred, was located a large pile of refuse coal and slate, taken from Slope No. a. After the occurrence of the accident, I made a very careful examination of the ground in the vicinity of the "cave-in," in conjunction with a study of all the maps, sections and other mining data in the possession of the Susquehanna Coal Company, which were placed at my disposal by Manager Irving A. Stearns. The accompanying map, Fig. 1, was compiled from the Company's map, and from special maps made by the Geological Survey under the direction of my assistant, Mr. Frank A. Hill. This map shows the relative position of the mine-workings, the surface features and the "cave-in," and other points to be specially referred to hereafter. LEDOUX).-If there ever was a question in the mind of anybody as to whether there are some mining engineers, I think if they would look in the door tonight they would decide there are. We meet here tonight not only to enjoy a smoke and other incidentals which are permitted us in these days, but with a more serious thought in our minds, because that flag, with its 540 stars, only begins to show the number of our membership that are serving the country. We are thinking of them, and when we consider how many of those men are also citizens of one or another of our allied countries, we can imagine that many are tonight thinking of us and perhaps have received, even at the front, notices of our annual meeting and are wondering what we are doing tonight; so our thought this evening will be going out to them, going out to those of our number who are serving in the khaki or in the blue, or in other activities denied to some of us for one reason or another; but, gentlemen, there is one thing we will do now, we will rise and sing together r the Star Spangled Banner. Gentlemen, not only are American citizens here tonight, not only representatives of our country on the Speakers' platform, but. there are representatives of our Allies, and we are going to have the privilege of listening to one or two of the latter, a citizen of the great British Empire and a citizen of France. I is obvious that details such as the physical and chemical properties and methods of heat-treating of the materials mentioned must be omitted in a paper on the subject of materials used in oil-refinery pumps1. Only sufficient identification is given to enable the reader to find additional information from already published data. Also, the subject covers many operating conditions, but only the most important services can be discussed here. To the oil refiner, the pumping equipment is of vital interest. Practically every refinery operation, from the charging of crude oil to a distillation unit to the shipping of refined products, involves some form of pumping machinery. Intermediate refining stages involve a great variety of pumping machinery to carry out successfully the aims of the refinery technologist. Temperatures at which oils are handled vary from — 50" F. to 900" F. Pressure may vary from subatmospheric to 2000 1b. per sq. inch. The selection of the proper materials involves a careful consideration of the conditions under which the particular pump must operate. The four most important considerations are temperature, pressure, corrosion, and abrasion or wear. Consideration of temperature may be divided into three parts: (1) extremely low temperatures of the order of —50" F.; (2) temperatures at atmospheric or slightly above; (3) temperatures from 200" to 900" F. Pressures fall into two groups: (1) pressures reached by ordinary trade pumps of the order of 200 lb. per sq. in., (2) extreme pressure conditions involving pressures as high as 2000 lb. Noncorrosive and corrosive oils can be treated differently. Under the latter falls corrosion in the presence of water, which will occur up to 250" F. The second type of corrosion occurs in high-temperature pumping equipment, with temperatures from 450" to 900" F., largely caused by sulfur compounds. SECTIONS 1. INTRODUCTION.—In this investigation the meltingpoint and the specific heat of certain artificial silicates were determined by the method of mixtures, using a large platinum-ball pyrometer. The silicates were placed in platinum crucibles on the hearth of a small regenerative gas-furnace (Figs. 1 and 2), and the platinum ball was placed between them. The temperature of the furnace was usually raised very slowly, the behavior of the silicates being observed as they gradually grew hotter; and their temperature was ascertained indirectly from time to time by determining that of the platinum ball, which to that end was temporarily withdrawn from the furnace and immersed in a known weight of water in a calorimeter. The weight and specific heat of water and of platinum ball being known (the specific heat of the latter approximately), it mas possible to calculate the temperature of the platinum ball, which was assumed to have been substantially that of the silicates which surrounded it in the furnace. The specific heat of the silicates also was determined by the method of mixtures. Their temperature having been determined as just described, one of them was dropped into a known weight of water in a calorimeter, whose rise of temperature was then noted. Knowing the weight and initial temperature of the silicate, its specific heat was wily calculated. The reults obtained, especially as regards the melting-point, must be regarded as first approximations. The technical difficulties encountered were so serious as to raise doubts, now from one cause, .now from another, as to the accuracy of most of the results: hence I give but a few, those which were reached without mishap, and with proper observation of the various precautions. SULPHUR, even in small amounts, may often be harmful to nickel and high-nickel alloys, causing impairment of mechanical strength and destruction of malleability and ductility, as shown by Merica and Waltenberg.1,2 It may act. either in the form of nonmetallic inclusions produced in the liquid state during furnacing or as reaction products resulting from its diffusion into the solid metal. In recognizing the action of this element, ability to identify its various forms by means of the microscope is often of considerable importance, especially when direct quantitative methods are inapplicable. [ ] Of the sulphur compounds associated with nickel and high-nickel alloys, the sulphides that may be found in malleable nickel, Monel? and Inconel? are an important group. These sulphides were investigated by metallographic methods in order to provide descriptive data by which to identify them. The nominal compositions of malleable nickel, Monet and Inconel are given in Table I. The term "sulphide" is employed here in a very general sense, to designate a substance in which sulphur and one or more metallic elements are combined. The term includes any combinations of compounds and solid solutions. METHOD OF INVESTIGATION Three groups of small laboratory melts were made, one group to represent each of the three types of alloy under investigation. Within each group, a number of ingots with a sufficient variety of chemical analyses were prepared so that the effect of each of the elements entering the complete commercial alloy could be isolated and observed. In most cases, to facilitate metallographic study by exaggerating the number and size of the resulting sulphides, somewhat greater amounts of the minor elements were added than are present in the commercial alloys. Likewise, considerably more sulphur was added than is normal, but not enough to complicate the system. Transverse sections were cut at a point one third of the distance from the butt to the head of each ingot, polished and examined with an inverted stage metallograph equipped with a combination polarizing-analyzing vertical illuminator. The light source was a tungsten-mercury vapor arc lamp.

(Butte Meeting, August, 1913.) THE following paper aims to make a full explanation of the phenomena of rock jointing. It may be unnecessary to give any general description of what are termed joints in rocks, but. Professor Geikie's clear and faithful generalizations are so illuminating that no excuse need be given for introducing the following and other quotations into this paper: "Almost all rocks are traversed-by vertical or highly inclined divisional planes termed joints. These have been regarded as clue in some way to contraction during consolidation (fissures of retreat) ; and this is no doubt their origin in innumerable cases. But, on the other hand, their frequent regularity and persistence across materials of very varying texture suggest rather the effects of internal pressure-and-movement within the crust."1 General Explanation.-In this paper I show that the phenomenon of jointing may to a large extent be accounted for by the pressure of the water contained in the pores of the rock. To understand this, each constituent grain of. the porous material may be considered to be separately compressed by the 'water which submerges it. As all the grains are held together by cohesion, the whole mass is contracted by this pressure. In an indefinitely extended mass, however, there must be a limit to the possible contraction without rupture, because the material is restrained from. moving freely by other material around its boundaries. The mass of rock thus becomes broken up. This phenomenon is known as " shrinkage " jointing. The terra "shrinkage" is an apt one, if it be understood that the shrinkage of the rock is often brought about by change of stress. Stresses.-The compressive component of water stress on the individual grains is evidently the same as that of the water with which it is in contact. This is so, both. before and after the jointing is formed. Before the jointing is formed there is, however, a tensile stress in one or more directions which keeps the material from contracting.

Nearly all of the present schemes for treating complex (i. e. lead-silver-zinc-copper) ores are based on the idea that lead holds, and will hold for some time, the strongest economic place from the viewpoint of supply and demand of all the non-ferrous metals. Copper, it is thought, will come back to its own when European affairs are stabilized, although at that time competition from Chile, Peru, and Katanga, in particular, will be more severe than in pre-war days. The future for silver and for zinc is uncertain. New uses are developing for zinc, and the market has remained better than many expected, but the stabilization of world markets will bring in foreign competition instead of relief. The cost of producing zinc from simple zinc ores, by the retort process, will, from the nature of the labor required and the increasing cost of fuel, increase steadily. As a result, the small producers of purely zinc ores around Joplin are shutting down their mines, even with a good market price for zinc; on the other hand, the producer of lead from complex ores, in the Rocky Mountain states, is confident of a profit from the sale of his lead, and is seeking means to make the zinc in his ore pay some part of the cost of treatment. However, the tonnage costs for mining and ore dressing are much higher in the Rocky Mountain states, as may be seen by comparing tax-return statements from the various states. Even before the recent drop in the price of silver, many mines were operating on a very slender margin of profit; labor and supplies cost more. Mining at greater depth has shown most orebodies to grow increasingly more complex, so that improvements in mining and ore-dressing practice have not been sufficient to compensate for the additional expense involved in beneficiating these ores. INTRODUCTION Ideally, this paper should start by citing examples of slope failures in open pit mines during earthquakes. I do not know of any such examples, although - since my search of the literature has not been exhaustive - such examples may well exist. However, there certainly are many examples of devastating earthquake-induced landslides, and there is no reason why such landslides cannot occur at large open pits. Moreover, many of the actual earthquake-induced landslides have seriously affected mining operations in one way or another. Hence, this paper will treat earthquake-induced landslide phenomena in general, in the hope and expectation that the reader can apply this general knowledge to the specific problems associated with open pit mining. Ultimately, of course, the aim is to predict the likelihood of the occurrence of earthquake-induced landslides, and to delineate steps which can be taken to minimize the possibility of their occurrence. These aims can be achieved only imperfectly at the present time, for our knowledge concerning earthquake-induced landslides is still in an embryonic stage. Nonetheless, much useful knowledge does exist. In order to understand and apply this knowledge, it is necessary to: 1. Review the nature and extent of actual earthquake-induced landslides; 2. Have a grasp of the basic terminology and concepts of seismology; 3. Study the fundamentals of probability-based seismic risk analysis; 4. Appreciate the way in which earth materials behave during earthquake loadings; and 5. Have a general knowledge of the methods currently available for analyzing the dynamic response of slopes. Much of this paper is devoted to this necessary background. Information of practical use in connection with various classes of slope stability problems is assembled in the final sections. The Choctaw coal-field is a direct westward extension of the Arkansas coal-field, but its coals are not like Arkansas coals, except in the country immediately adjoining the Arkansas line. From the base of the coal-bearing rocks up to the top of the coalmeasures, I find a total thickness of at least 8500 feet. This great mass of coal-bearing rocks consists of an alternation of slates, shales, sandstones and coal-beds, with their accompanying under-beds of fire-clay. Only one small bed of limestone was observed. This occurs near the middle of the series; it is about eighteen inches thick, and quite arenaceous. The formation is naturally subdivided by seven or eight thick beds of sandstone, varying from 50 to 200 feet in thickness, the outcropping edges of which form a series of more or less bold " hogback " ridges, the interbedded shales and slate forming the intervening valleys. The base of the coal-series is a massive sandstone, ranging from 100 to 200 feet or more in thickness, lying immediately beneath the Grady coal-bed, which is the lowest known coal. In the district embraced between. the Missouri, Kansas and Texas railroad and the Arkansas State line, this sand-rock usually forms a bold semi-mountainous ridge. This is the ridge through which the St. Louis and San Francisco railroad passes at Bryan station, where the Grady coal-bed is opened and worked, from which point it can be traced westward without difficulty, passing about three miles north of Le Flor on the same railroad, thence west to the " Little Narrows " (which is merely a gap in the ridge), 'and beyond to a point two miles west of the Thompson-McKinney place, where it swings abruptly north for a mile or more, only to resume immediately its westward course, forming for some miles the northern boundary of the valley known as the " Boiling-Springs Prairie," beyond which it trends somewhat

In the death of Sir William Siemens, the Institute loses its most distinguished honorary member, one who, without exaggeration, may be ranked among the greatest Men of the century. In justification of this claim, I quote in part the words of two other men eminent in the walks of science. Professor Huxley, addressing the Royal Society, spoke of Siemens as "a marked example of vast energy, large scientific acquirements, and intellectual power of a high order," and as one " who had no superior in fertility and ingenuity of invention, while hardly any living man so thoroughly combined an extensive knowledge of scientific principles with the power of applying then] in a commercially successful manner. The value of his numerous inventions must be measured, not merely by the extent to which they have increased the wealth and convenience of mankind, but by the favorable reaction on the progress of pure science which they, like all such inventions, have exerted, and will continually exert." Dr. Wedding, in his address before the Verein zur Befarderung des Gewerbefleisses in Preussm, speaks of Siemens as being "so fortunate as to combine German erudition with British activity in such a manner that both nations, Gertnan as well as English, were equally proud of him; and, now that his rich life is ended, regret is expressed on both shores of the North Sea, first by the Germans that his entire life had not been spent in Germany, and his powers dedicated to Germany, and by the English that he was not born a Briton." Germany may well be proud of being the birth-place, not only of such a man, but of such a family; for where in history shall we find in a single family such a wide range of knowledge so successfully applied to the arts? In treating a cast metal by any working process such as rolling, drawing or forging, variations in the conditions present in the remelting, casting, chilling and preheating of the initial ingot will certainly have some effect on the physical properties of the final product. In considering the effects of cold working on the physical properties of metals, however, it will be assumed that these factors, being controlled according to best practice, will remain constant and therefore may be neglected. Starting with such a uniform metal ingot, the next operation in the production of wrought metal involves hot working by rolling, forging or extrusion so as to produce a slab, billet or bloom. This working must be sufficient to produce substantial grain refinement and minimize any defects occurring in the initial ingot. Even such a hot-worked product is not suitable as a starting material for determining the effects of cold working because it contains internal strains analogous to those resulting from cold working. It is necessary, therefore, to supplement the hot working with a considerable amount of cold working, followed by a proper annealing in order to obtain a material suitable for use in defining the effects of cold working on the physical properties of a metal. That is, if the effects of cold working are to be evaluated accurately it is necessary to have other effects at least constant if not absent. Such material, unfortunately, cannot always be obtained in commercial practice but the requirements just indicated certainly represent the desired goal; this goal has been attained in the treatment of some metals, one being aluminum. Factors That Must Be Considered Simultaneously with Cold Working So many other factors affect the physical properties of a metal that it is necessary to consider these factors simultaneously with cold working; their effects vary in magnitude with the amount of cold work present. The most important of these factors are: (I) chemical composition, (2) structure, (3) temperature of working, (4) character of working, (5) rate of working, and (6) methods used for measuring results.
