Discussion of the paper of KENNETH SEAVER presented at the San Francisco meeting, September, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 105, September, 1915, pp. 1913 .to 1927. J. W. RICHARDS, South Bethlehem, Pa.-This paper concerns a very large industry, and an important detail in that industry. Within sight of where I live in Bethlehem, Pa., are coke works in which $2,500,000 was lost by the use of improper bricks in the coke ovens. This was the fundamental reason of the failure of the plant. The old ovens have all been torn out and replaced by new ovens built of proper bricks. This may emphasize the commercial importance of this subject. When speaking about coke-oven brick, the first thing that comes to my mind is how important it would he if it were possible to. get a brick of better heat conductivity. The heat for coking coal has to go through the thickness of the brick. The silica brick used has low heat conductivity as compared with some other refractories; magnesite brick probably has four times its heat conductivity. The coke oven needs bricks of high heat conductivity. Any process which would increase the heat conductivity of silica brick would undoubtedly shorten the coking process.

BELT-CONVEYOR 'history in this country dates back to the end of the eighteenth century. Up to 1896 they were crude in design and application. The second era, dating from 1896 to about 1920, saw special study given to belt construction and idler design. The latter part of this era saw the beginning of the present-day antifriction idler. The third era followed World War I, when industry began to expand rapidly. Mines and quarries, steel mills, and power-generating plants became larger and greater quantities of ore, stone, and coal were being handled. It became vital that belts handle larger capacities, that they be longer, and that they be dependable for 24 hours per day. In this third era a radical change in belt conveyor design and application occurred. The design has became more scientific. Studies have been made to find out what factors influenced the power required for a belt conveyor and it was found that the sag of the belt between idlers and the flattening of the load between idlers had considerable effect on power requirements. So definite initial tension was put into the belt at the loading end and idler spacing was reduced at the foot end to limit this sag. Belt manufacturers made tougher and stronger belts.

I desire to state briefly my views respecting the great practical value of the Watertown testing-machine, and the necessity that exists, for an able permanent commission to supervise its operations, in order that the results of all tests made thereon may be properly worked out and rendered available for public use. It is doubtless known to the Institute that this machine has, for the past two years, been placed at the service of the public upon payment of a per diem charge. It was my privilege to be among the first to use the testing-machine, and the results of my first experiments were of such importance, owing to the great capacity and extreme accuracy of the machine, that it has since become my practice to have tests of all materials used in constructions that came under my charge, made at Watertown. As a conseqnence, nearly one hundred tests have been made on my account directly, and some two hundred and forty additional for work built from my designs. It may be confidently affirmed, that the factor of anxiety on all these structures is exceedingly small .m far as the quality of material is concerned, and it is undoubtedly a very great advantage for parties interested in construction to have

THE occurrence of twins in aluminum ingots cast under certain conditions has been well established. For instance, Herenguel and Lacombe1,2 have observed a twinned columnar structure in 99.5 and 99.9 pct Al, solidified by continuous or semicontinuous casting. The structure, which they termed "basaltic," appears in the form of elongated crystalline fibers of alternating luster. Herenguel and Lacombe2 found sections of flat crystalline plates composed of twin crystal plates, in which the twin plane (111) and a [I121 direction contained in the twin plane are parallel to the principal heat gradient. This orientation relationship is different from the usual orientation texture observed in cast face-centered cubic metals, where the [100] direction is approximately parallel to the long columnar axes lying in the direction of growth." A large amount of twinning has also been observed by the present authors in semicontinuous cast aluminum of 99.2 pct purity, Fig. 1. Mondolfo4 has suggested that the twinned cast structure forms by a deformation twinning process as the result of uneven cooling stresses within the ingots. UNTIL quite recently, Alsace was the only district in France where petroleum could be found in somewhat industrial quantities. The Pechelbronn fields produce, however, only about 80,000 tons a year, which represent approximately one-eighth of the domestic consumption. Much research work has been done in Alsace to find the prolongation of the Pechelbronn fields, but instead of oil the drillings revealed the existence of large deposits of potash. This can be easily explained when one remembers that the Pechelbronn oil is of the Oligocene period, and that in the Alsatian stratification the Oligocene lies immediately on the Keuper, i. e., on the strata that originate from a period during which the largest salt and potash deposits were constituted. Before the war, and mostly at the end of the last century, some wells were drilled in. various districts of France where some analogies could be found with the Alsatian geology, the borings being mainly made in the Triassic and Tertiary beds. They led to negative results. After the war, the growing importance of oil urged the necessity of resuming the explorations. But it. is our belief that this was greatly facilitated by the enacting of new legislation, which is embodied in the Mine Act of May 16, 1922.

EARTH-REISTIVITY measurements are often of service in obtaining information regarding geological formations, particularly when applied to structural problems. In such problems the masses of the various bodies are large, and have a corresponding effect on the average resistivity of the soil. Much work has been done using such measurements, but in general the method of interpretation employed is empirical. Since certain simple cases can be investigated mathematically, it appears to be quite sound to endeavor to apply the mathematical solutions to the practical results, in order to deduce from the latter such unknown quantities as depth. This paper deals with such a method of interpretation for the simple case of a single horizontal stratum. IN the large number of important studies on high-purity aluminum (e.g., recrystallization and grain growth, creep, internal friction), it does not seem to have been generally recognized that the iron content, despite its very low figure, has a strong influence on a number of properties. In part, its influence is due to the very low solubility of the Fe-A1 6 phase. For aluminum of about 99.99 pct purity, the iron content may be 0.001 to 0.004 pct. For values in this range, a second phase will be present below 410" to 480 °C. This was determined by extrapolation of a log solubility vs inverse temperature plot of the solid solubility data of Edgar.' One consequence is the inhibition of grain coarsening below the solubility limit. This is shown in Table I, which gives, for three iron contents, the annealing temperature required for the absence of grains smaller than 1/2 mm average diameter together with the minimum temperature for the presence of some grains larger than 2 mm diameter. The specimens were 1/4x 1 1/2-in. strips cut from hard-rolled 1/16-in. sheet supplied by the Aluminum Co. of America.

At the request of the Council of the Institute, I have the honor to submit the following remarks upon the Program of Tests under which the current work of the Watertown Arsenal Testing Laboratory is carried on, which comprises, among other items, the tests of steel ingot metal and derivative shapes. The intended scope of the tests may be illustrated by extracts from the descriptive part of the program as submitted by the Laboratory under date of April 17,1907, and subsequently approved by the Chief of Ordnance, U. S. A. Under Item 1, Ingot Metal—Open hearth, acid and basic; Bessemer, acid and basic; crucible; fluid compressed and uncompreesed—descriptive remarks were made as follon-s: "A thorough, fundamental inquiry into the physical properties of steel necessarily begins with the ingot metal. Investigations, having for their object the improvement of steels, should also begin with the ingot. A knowledge of the ingot structure is essential for judging of the subsequent behavior or appearance of the metal. Under ordinary conditions, so little information is obtained from the ingot in individual cases that practically none of importance is acquired. IN presenting the medalist, Scott Turner, director of 'the Bureau of Mines, said in part: "Mr. Blaylock is a Canadian by birth, training, ex-perience and preference. He was born in the Province of Quebec, graduated from McGill University in 1899, and immediately thereafter became an employee of the company for which he is now general manager. His outstanding achievements have been the acquisition for his company of the Sullivan mine, and the organization of a metallurgical staff, which, under his leadership and personal direction, solved the difficult problems pre-sented by the extraordinarily complex lead-zinc-silver ores of the Sullivan mine. "By title only, I will suggest to you the high lights of his career: (1) Development, of the great mine at Kimberley, and a huge plant at Trail. (2) Discovery and application of a successful differential flotation process for Sullivan ore which had previously not re-sponded to any process. (3) Improvements in lead-blast-furnace and refinery practice. (4) Development of an electrolytic process for treatment of zinc concen-trates. (5) Development of an electric-furnace-smelt-ing-method for zinc-plant residues. Besides this, we recognize his great organizing ability, his gift of leader-ship, and the cooperative spirit he always displayed.

Meeting of Nov. 21, 1913.-The President reported the appointment of the officers and members of the Committee on Non-Metallic Minerals, published elsewhere in this Bulletin. The President appointed the Executive Committee of the New York Section as a local .committee to have charge of the Annual Meeting of the Institute in February, 1914, with power to add to their numbers. It was voted that the Chairman of each Technical Committee, be made ex officio a member of the Committee on Papers and Publications. At the request of the Secretary, Burr A. Robinson was appointed Assistant Secretary of the Institute. E. Gybbon Spilsbury was nominated as representative of the Institute on the John Fritz Medal Board of Award. It was voted that the next summer meeting of the Institute be held in Salt Lake City in August, 1914, with power to the Executive Committee to fix the exact date. Substantial reduction was made in the price of the back Transactions of the Institute in accordance with the notice published on p. i of this Bulletin.. The By-Laws of the Montana Local Section were approved. The printing contract for the year 1914 was made with the Maple Press. Thirty-eight Members, one Associate and three Junior Members were elected.

HAVING had considerable practical experience in the management of colored mining labor in the South, I have thought a few observations upon its peculiarities might interest those not personally familiar with it. In mining, as in all other departments throughout the South, this class of labor is largely in excess of any other; and its characteristics need to be known and duly taken into consideration by those who may be charged with the conduct of southern enterprises. The colored laborers are fervently religious, intensely superstitious, improvident, and usually good natured and happy,—in a word, they are like children. That strong religious emotions do not involve necessarily a moral sense highly developed in the direction of ethics, is shown in the propensity of the colored population for chickenstealing, and in the brutal fights and other outbreaks of which they are not infrequeutly guilty, upon any slight provocation. It is only fair to say, however, that many individuals among them are in the highest degree steady and trustworthy. To one accustomed to seeing white miners at work in the middle, northern or western States, the colored miners seem somewhat slow and lazy. But their efficiency is greater than it appears to be. R. Venkataramani (Assistant Professor of Mining Engineering, Dept. of Mining, The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Pa.)-Y. J. Wang and L. W. Saperstein are to be congratulated for their paper on the computer solution of ventilation problems. The limitations on the problem size to be solved by the program (Appendix II) has been outlined in the paper. I would like to add the following additional limitations of this computer program: The dimensions of the variable J1and J2 should be changed to J, (550) and J2 (550) to handle problems containing more than 400 branches, and up to 550 branches. If there are a large number of branches common to the various meshes, another limitation on the problem size will be the dimension of the variable NA. While a higher-order polynomial fitting for the fan characteristic data points is more rigorous, a quadratic relation, if linear interpolation between the points is inadequate, will result in saving computing time without much loss of accuracy. Of course, this can be handled by minor modifications to the existing polynomial fitting routine in the program. M. J. THE Jones Mine (or Johannes Mine, as it was originally called, from a former proprietor), situated near Springfield, in the township of Caernarvon, Berks County, Pennsylvania, has long been known as a large deposit of magnetic iron ore, associated with more or less copper pyrites, and with malachite and chrysocolla. It occurs in a belt of soft schistose rocks which rest upon the Laurentian gneiss of the Welsh Mountain, and to the northward are soon concealed by the unconformably overlying Mesozoic sandstone of the region. These metalliferous strata belong to the Primal slates of Rodgers, which, in many other localities in this region, include similar deposits of iron ores associated with more or less copper, and often accompanied by chloritic and argillaceous schists, and, more rarely, by serpentine and small lenticular masses of crystalline limestone. To this same horizon belong the iron ores of Boyertown, Fritz's Island, and Roudenbusch, near Reading, Wheatfield, Cornwall, and Dillsburg (all of which are found along the northern border of the Mesozoic belt of * By the kind permission of Dr. F. On Feb. 16, 1948, the Board of Directors of AIME authorized the publishing of "Technical Notes" in METALS TECHNOLOGY. The purpose is to provide prompt publication of very short items of the following general types: I. Results of short investigations which do not warrant a paper. 2. The conclusions of extensive investigations of insufficient general interest to justify a regular paper. 3. Conclusions arising in the course of an investigation, which, because of interest to others in the field, the author wishes to present prior to completion of the investigation. 4. Pertinent factual comment (not mere argument) on the subject matter of previous "Notes." Such Notes will be subject to the approval of the Auxiliary and AIME Publications Committees, but can be handled more promptly than regular papers because they need not be referred to readers. The recommended maxi- mum length is 500 words; notes in excess of 1,000 words will not be considered for this type of publication. A graph or photograph may be included as part of the note when particularly illustrative. As with regular papers, contributions to the new section should be submitted to the Secretary of the AIME. Please furnish two copies each complete with illustrations.

The brief contribution of Mr. West* furnishes a text for the present paper, which will, however, take a wider range, warranted by the writer's somewhat unusual opportunities for the study of the practice of the foundry as well as the blast-furnace, and especially of the production of satisfactory castings from iron of a composition altogether unsuitable, in the opinion of the average foundryman, for that purpose. Mr. West has observed that plates cast from direct-metal of a certain composition could be planed, whereas this would have been impracticable with cupola-metal of like composition; that furnace-metal has more " life " (i. e., fluidity, or a higher temperature) than cupola-metal; that it throws out much " kish," etc. And he suggests that blast-furnace managers may throw further light on the greater softness of direct-metal castings. Perhaps such light may be furnished to some extent by the present paper. The difference between cupola-metal and furnace- or direct-metal is, first of all, in the lower average sulphur-content of the latter. It has been proved by experiment that iron increases in its content of sulphur to a considerable extent with each remelting. THE observations here presented are those, not of an expert accountant, but of one who, while he has seen considerable service in the accounting departments of large companies, has spent more time in engineering and operating. This paper is intended to cover, in a measure, mine accounting for small mines, as distinguished from the elaborate systems, requiring many persons ;n the accounting department. I shall attempt to outline a system embracing the essentials of accounting, and simple enough in form to permit one or two persons to carry it on from month to month, in sufficient detail to be able to tell quickly the grade of ore, the prices received for metals, costs per ton for mining and milling, costs per foot for development, upward or downward tendencies in costs, ore settled or in transit, cash on hand, stocks of supplies on hand, efficiency of' labor, etc. As in all accounting, there are two main divisions: that of revenue received for what is sold, and that of disbursements made for what is bought, so in mine accounting we have to consider chiefly the income derived from sales of ore or concentrates, and the expenses incurred in producing the said ore or concentrates in a marketable condition.

THE great number of wells being drilled in the Gulf Coast creates a great demand for and an opportunity to improve the methods of drilling wells and of producing oil from them. Some improvements have been made, but in the present strenuous drilling campaign at Spindletop, the quickest methods of drilling and completing wells are much too slow. Therefore, not a great deal of thought has been given to any new methods. However, one can not help but compare the method and equipment used in the present-day drilling campaign at Spindletop with those of 1901. The differences in equipment and methods are staggering and the present-day operators can hardly imagine how the old operators ever were able to drill a well. The "Old Timers" explain the reason as being that "Men were men in those days and not much machinery was necessary." Yet the development in 25 years of thought and study has brought about a great improvement in equipment and in methods. I believe there has been a great deal more thought given to the development and improvement of drilling equipment and methods and to the completion of wells than has been given to the actual production operations.

A. J. SHALER* and H. UDIN*— Bonding, and the increase in contact area, form two of the series of phenomena collectively known as 'sintering.' A third one of these is involved in changes in dimensions of the whole compact. Dr. Kuczynski's Fig 1, in which the center of the sphere does not approach the surface of the plate, shows that he is not concerned with the last of these phenomena. On the other hand, Frenkel's work is exclusively concerned with changes in dimensions. Dr. Kuczynski's rather unfortunate remarks about Frenkel's work are therefore beside the point. The work of Wulff and myself, quoted by the author, has also been primarily concerned with what we call the 'second stage of sintering,' in which such systems as may be represented by Kuczynski's model of a sphere and a block are no longer in existence. The work of Pines also falls in this category. Neither does Dr. Kuczynski's very masterful experimental work represent a solution to the problem of bonding. It does not seek to answer the question of why particles approach one another and form a weld in the first place. Such a study clearly reveals that the area of contact is initially rapidly deformed by direct mechanical flow caused by the same force of attraction. This initial deformation is neglected here. On the other hand, students of the phenomena of sintering must not underestimate the very important contribution that Dr. Kuczynski does make in this paper. It is a well-worked out study of the mechanism of 'spheroidization' of the voids, the first manifestation of which, during sintering, is the growth of the areas of contact, with no change in the dimensions of the compact. This study is very valuable as a basis for predicting the development of the strength of such compacts as filters and certain porous bearings, in which the second stage of sintering is never reached. Secretary E. H. Benjamin, of the California Miners' Association, has proposed and begun, in co-operation with the testing laboratory of the University of California, at Berkeley, a series of tests which should prove of great interest and practical use to all persons making extensive application of steel wire cables, and especially to miners who run them in deep mines. Mr. Benjamin is endeavoring to obtain pieces of cable both new, and old and worn, from every deep mine of importance on the Pacific Coast, together with all the data obtainable concerning their manufacture and particular use. Pieces from each sample will be broken ill the laboratory before mentioned: and as far as possible the effects of winding around drums or pulleys ; of sudden starting and stopping when loaded; of heavy shocks, and of the general wear and tear of the cables, will be ascertained by these tests. The Olsen testing-machine of 200,000 pounds capacity will be used to break the cables, and the rupturing force, in different instances, will be applied slowly and also rapidly, in order to make the tests comparable as far as possible with the practical use of the cables themselves. All information and data available should be obtained for each specimen sent to the laboratory, the name of the manufacturer, the date of making, strength of cable when new and unrusted, as well as the circumstances and conditions of the practical use of the cable. Having this information before us, we shall be able to tell, approximately at least, the effects of age, rust, wear and tear, shocks, etc.; and perhaps be enabled to draw the line of limitation beyond which it would be no longer safe to use a cable of known manufacture. Moreover, by means of such tests we may, perhaps, he able to recommend worn cables for other uses, less severe in character, thereby prolonging the life of their effective usefulness.
