This test is based upon the fact that metallic copper will precipitate gold and silver upoil its surface from acid solutions. Of course, the fact is not new, but its application is probably so. I have used the method with success; it recommends itself by the rapidity and ease with which it may be carried on. An auriferous cyanide solution, if made acid with sulphuric acid and boiled with finely divided, pulverulent, metallic copper, will, within a short time, deposit its gold-content on the copper. Any silver in the solution is also precipitated. If this mixture is now filtered, the filter and contents may at once be subjected to a crucible assay treatment, and its lead buttons cupelled and determined. If, instead of taking cement-copper, or any metallic copperpowder, a solution of bluestone is used after acidification, and a few small pieces of sheet aluminum are added, and the solution boiled until all the copper has come down, the result as to the precipitation of gold and silver is the same. IT has been recognized that oxygen in minute quantities is extremely detrimental to the room-temperature ductility of molybdenum. Early fracto-graphic studies' of the cast metal indicated that oxides are formed preferentially at the grain boundaries. Additional verification of this preferential segregation has been obtained from internal friction studies on poly crystalline molybdenum (average grain diameter varied from 0.039 to 0.065 mm) and from observations of the effect of oxygen on specimens of extremely large grain size. Specimens A, B, and C, of 0.040 in. diameter commercial molybdenum wire (Lot FW 13-40) were heat treated in the vacuum furnace described by Few and Manning according to the specifications given in Table I. Internal friction studies of these specimens were carried out using a low frequency (approximately 1 cycle per second) torsional pendulum completely enclosed in a vacuum tank. As the pressure of oxygen in the heat treating atmosphere changed, the portion of the internal friction vs temperature curves ascribed to grain boundary relaxation changed correspondingly, Fig. 1. As far as rapid determination of oxygen in liquid steel by means of a galvanic cell is concerned, I should like to summarize in a few words the activities of Centre de Recherches Metallurgigues (CRM) in Belgium. This work has been conducted both in a laboratory (Tammann and Induction furnaces) as well as on an industrial scale (converter and ladle). The galvanic cells developed by CRM are of two kinds: one with an air reference and one with a solid reference. As far as galvanic cells with air reference are concerned, we have tested numerous solid electrolytes (zirconia, spinel, and alumina). We finally chose zirconia sheathed with quartz. In order to be in a position to accurately determine the time when thermal equilibrium is reached, it was deemed useful to fit the galvanic cell with a Pt/Pt, Rh thermocouple, so as to follow the temperature variations at the interface of the solid electrolyte, until the temperature becomes equal to that of the bath. In actual fact the solution is highly interesting since it is possible to determine both the oxygen activity and the temperature of the bath with a single cell.

A LUCID, thorough and powerful review of the impact of your tax laws on mining operations has already been presented by Granville S. Borden*. He has brought into focus and relief the pressure-points at which the shoe pinches most, has suggested some remedial measures, and enunciated much sound doctrine about the inter-relationship and interplay of taxation policy and mining activity. Under the heading "What Every Lawmaker Should Know", he laid down the fundamental proposition that "the magnitude of our mineral resources varies inversely with the magnitude of the taxes levied upon them." With this, as with his other major premises, all mining men must be in hearty concurrence. There can be no doubt that a flourishing and expansive future for the mining industry in this country, in Canada, or anywhere else will depend on the thoroughness with which these fundamental propositions are grasped by legislators, by national policy-makers and by public opinion at large. Coming to the specific points to which Mr. Borden has drawn our attention, I will touch on the corresponding provisions in Canadian federal tax law, by way of comparison and contrast.

THE volumetric behavior of isobutane at temperatures below its critical temperature has been studied by several investigators. Seibert and Burrell1 measured the vapor pressure of isobutane from the ice point to the critical temperature. Dana and co-workers2 determined among other thermodynamic quantities the density of the saturated liquid and the saturated gas and the vapor pressure from approximately 0° to 130° F. Sage and Lacey3 studied a number of the thermodynamic properties of this hydrocarbon from 70° to 250° F. The specific volume in the gas and liquid region was determined at pressures up to 3000 lb. per sq. in. ? throughout this temperature interval. In addition, the vapor pressures were measured at 30° intervals. These data taken together serve to establish the thermodynamic behavior of isobutane at temperatures between 0° and 250° F. with reasonable accuracy. However, apparently there are no data available at the higher temperatures. For this reason an investigation of the volumetric behavior of isobutane at temperatures between 100° and 460° F. was carried out with apparatus that has been described in another paper (A.I.M.E. Tech. Pub. 1127).

Y.—I can add a little to the information which has been given, by saying that it has been our business for some years, among other things, to inspect outgoing copper from some of the works here in the East, and to find out why there are variations not only in the conductivity of the wire-bars, but also in the character of the cathode-copper shipped; and we have found two things: These impurities which have been mentioned are largely upon the surface of the cathode. Samples taken of the inside, even of the nodules or " berries " which grow on the outside of the cathode, show that they do not contain more impurities than the denser material in the interior. In other words, it is a superficial deposit or contamination. There is still another reason for impurity in some of the copper which finds its- way to the manufacturers, namely, carelessness in the handling of molds or in casting. We have found copper which was comparatively pure, as far as the copper itself was concerned, but contained, mechanically intruded in the interior of the ingots,

As the specific gravity of low-carbon steel seems to be attracting considerable attention as a means of détermining the quality and value of the metal, I give here a few of the results of a long series of experiments recently made by me. The object of the experiments not requiring more than approximate correctness in the third place of decimals, the extreme precautions to obtain accuracy which are sometimes used in determining specific gravity were not observed. But each piece of metal was carefully cleaned to remove scale, rust, dirt, etc., thoroughly dried, and then weighed in air, all weighings being carefully repeated. The balance used was one of Troemner's finest, and sensitive to one-tenth of a milligram. Before weighing in distilled water, care was taken to remove, as far as possible, the air enclosed in the pores of the metal. The pieces of metal were suspended by means of fine silk thread, a correction of course being made for the weight of the silk. Care was taken that the water in which they were weighed should he always at the same level, and, as far as possible, at the same temperature.

This paper is presented in the hope that it will be instructive in view of the future large expansion of the mining industry in the west-coast countries of South America. There is a more or less general impression that the Spanish-American workman is inferior to the American, but after some years of experience and observation I doubt the correctne~s of this view. Taking into consideration all the elements which make for efficiency of labor, it has been found, particularly in Chile, that under proper organization native labor yields as much, man for man, and more, dollar for dollar, than in the Western United States. If a manager is willing to accept unreservedly the costum-bres del pais, without combating intelligently and patiently the ones tending to inefficiency, he should expect no better results than he deserves. He must conscientiously insist that a " square deal" be given and exacted; that liquor be excluded from camp as far as possible; that comfortable quarters and other uplifting elements of life be provided; and that past and existing methods and customs shall not be over-ridden rough-

G. A. Moore—The tin-fusion method has been a very favorable possibility for many years. The authors apparently have settled the question that delayed the method for a long time by showing that no hydrogen is absorbed in the tin. This, of course, is very important. I want to make a few remarks concerning the absolute accuracy of analysis, which must be the final basis for deciding among the various methods. From the figures in the paper, there seems to be some remaining slight discrepancy on the actual amount of hydrogen present in various samples which may be presumed essentially identical. (This is of the order of the precision of individual analyses but appears in averaged results.) From the analyst's viewpoint, the tally of hydrogen content can be regarded as occurring in three portions. First is a large portion which comes off easily and automatically during sample storage and later on heating in the apparatus. This is fairly easily analyzed. Second is an item which may be either positive or negative in the tally sheet. In warm or hot evolution, this is a portion which, in practice, can never be re-

The Crimora mine, operated by the American Manganese Company, Limited, is located 21/2 miles east of Crimora station, 011 the Shenandoah Valley railroad, in Augusta county, Virginia. It is situated in a basin at the western base of the range of mountains which flanks the Shenandoah Valley on the east. This range is composed of the Potsdam sandstone (No. I. of the Pennsylvania survey), and extends in a northeasterly-southwesterly direction the entire length of the valley. The general dip of the measures is westward. The massive sandstone of the mountain is geologically overlaid with shales or slates, which belong to the Potsdam, or lie between it and the Lower Silurian limestone. Throughout this region these shales are decomposed, and form more or less extensive clay deposits, which are found along the base of the range and often underlie a considerable area to the westward of the abrupt slope of the range. Sand and fragments of quartzite occur in considerable quantities on the surface, and often conceal the true character of the underlying formation. There is an error at the bottom of the right-hand column of p. 11, and the top left-hand column of p. 12. The first paragraph of the section EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS should read: "Thermal shock tests were conducted on circular discs of basalt, quartzite, and taconite. Average grain sizes ranged between 0.10 and 0.25 mm. Individual discs were tested only once, either in a cooling or heating shock. Several discs of the same rock type were shocked at a temperature, and the temperature level then was increased for another test by 10° to 20°F until complete fracture occurred when a specimen was quenched. The minimum temperature difference required to initiate cracking, TmiN was observed and used, together with other property values, to compute the dimensionless stress o*max . The observed ?Tmin for cooling shock in different media is tabulated in Table I. The property values E, St, a, and K are shown in Figs. 6, 8, 10, and 11, respectively. Discs of various rocks shocked in different isothermal baths gave o*max values for a wide range of Biot numbers. These o*max values were then compared with the theoretically predicted values."

Masjid-i-Sulaiman Field.—During the past year, drilling activities have been limited to repair work. No new developments of importance can be recorded in production technique. Fall of dome pressure is maintained at the 1 lb. per sq. in. per annum rate mentioned in previous reports. Acid treatment of wells is being increasingly used and for wells in fissured areas has been very successful. Such wells have been converted into first-grade producers with substantial drops in bottom-hole differential pressures. The effect of acid treatment has been to increase the flowing lives of wells so treated. The normal procedure consists of threo treatments of 500 gal. commercial acid diluted 100 per cent but success has been met with fewer applications. The policy of returning products to the resorvoir has been continued. The total quantity of products returned since the policy was commenced in 1929 now amounts to approximately 30 million barrels. Haft Kel Field.—The drilling of the main Haft Kel structure for production purposes has now been completed. Production and control wells have been completed to meet the rate of production anticipated over the next few years.

In recent years, increased attention is being paid to the application of oil-agglomeration technique for (a) improved recovery of low- ash clean coal, (b) effective beneficiation of low-grade coking coals and (c) removal of pyrite sulphur from high-sulphur coals. In this technique, which has been proved to be more effective than convention- al froth-flotation, advantage is taken of the oleo-philic nature of finely ground coal to separate it under controlled conditions from the associated minerals which are hydrophilic in nature. Unlike froth- flotation, no aeration is needed in the process and the concentrates which are obtained in the form of agglomerates or micro-pellets have easier dewatering characteristics. Optimization of operating variables in treating individual raw feed is a pre-requisite for the successful application of this process. A 10 gram batch unit was employed in the present test series. This paper presents - results from these investigations on such operating variables as (i) size of coal, (ii) amount of oil used, (iii) time of stirring, (iv) rate of stirring, (v) solid content in slurry and (vi) effect of conditioning.

J. A. Mathews,* Syracuse, N. Y. (written discussion?).-It is interesting to note how frequently we hear of some process that is going to revolutionize the tool-steel business. I don't know why it is, but every one seems to have it in for us poor tool-steel men. About 15 years ago, a good-sized plant was built in Syracuse for the manufacture of cast tools of malleable iron. The promoter of the scheme claimed to have a secret, process that had been given to him by a tramp to whom he gave a lift along a dusty road. The widows and orphans invested liberally in the securities of the company without consulting the men established in the machine-tool business in Syracuse. About two years later, when the sheriff's sale occurred, the secret, which was carried on the books of the company as an asset valued at $2,000,000, brought $15 at auction. A little later another concern started on the theory of replacing scrap high-speed steel with new high-speed steel tools made therefrom. Incidentally, as between folks who like to work with words, refer to line 6, second full paragraph, page 773 (August Mining Engineering) Would "for" preceding technological have changed the percentages in lines two and three of the bold-face heading on page 770? The intent was coequality among three, (studies of mankind, of science, and of technological empirics). Thirty-three pct for "man" studies is a pretty big bite for engineering schoolmen; 50 pct they won't even examine, let alone nibble at. Arthur F. Taggart For those of you without a copy of the August issue handy, the sentence referred to read: The plea herein is to make the overall time allotment for studies of mankind coequal with those, for science and technological empirics.... Through a progressive laboratory and pilot-plant program Jones & Laughlin Steel Corp has analyzed and corrected mine drainage pollution problems at all of its coal mines. In conducting this program, the company found no "typical" drainage discharge. Each discharge point at each mine was unique, so that varied approaches were needed to eliminate stream pollution. To illustrate the variety of these approaches, the treatment of drainage from foul, discharge points at three mines in Pennsylvania will be considered here. The flows and critical analyses of the drainage sources and treated effluents arc shown in Table I. Hydrated Lime Works at Thompson Borehole The discharge stream from the Thompson bore- hole at the Vesta No. 5 mine flowed into a small branch creek where it created a "yellowboy" deposit and affected aquatic life. Investigation indicated that hydrated lime would neutralize the acid and precipitate ferric iron without aeration. Treatment of the 150.000-gpd flow, however, created about 4000 gpd of wet sludge for which there was no nearby accumulation site. With State approval, this sludge was deposited through an unused borehole into an abandoned section of the Vesta No. 6 mine several miles away.

There were present eleven Directors, the Secretary and Assistant Secretary of the Institute, and eleven guests. The Secretary, Bradley Stoughton, was appointed the representative of the Institute on the Board of. Directors of the American Bureau of Welding. A communication from a member of the Institute regarding simplified spelling was laid on the table. The following appropriations were made for the year. 1919: $250 to the Institute of Metals Division, $250 to the St. Louis Section, $100 to the Columbia Section. An invitation was received from the Western Society of Engineers to the Institute to use the facilities of that society during the A. I. M. E. Meeting in Chicago. The Bulletin of the Institute was presented to the French Congress of Engineers. There were elected twenty-eight members, eighteen associates, and three junior associates. The status of one member was changed from junior associate to associate. Four members were reinstated. An extension of time was granted to one member for payment of dues. The dues of four members on active military duty were suspended. Dues were remitted of four members who have been paying over thirty years, and who are each over seventy years of age.

The committee was headed by Gerald Sherman, and the members were Chester A. Fulton, C. F. Jackson, Earl E. Hunner and Arthur Notman. The following form of classification was reported to the Board by the Committee on May 16, 1940, as its unanimous recommendation. In Silver Plume, Colo., there is a bachelor miner who offers individualized tours of his mine, The Silver Cloud. It is an interesting tour because he drove the mine himself and the view from the shack up there is spectacular. Beside that, he will probably invite you into his kitchen to sit around the old cook stove and drink coffee. When Andy first started his tour business he put a sign on the main street to advertise the fact. The sign read in part: "Women not welcome, but they will be tolerated at $3.00 a head”- the usual fee is $2.50. The sign lasted about 48 hours. Andy had to take it down because "all the ladies in town got mad at me. Now I take them all for $2.50 right across the board," he says. The mining industry is not only reticent about hiring women but traditionally does not even permit women to enter some mines. It would appear, what with the recent action on an equal-rights-for- women amendment in Congress, that we may be wise to examine the prospect.
