According to the analysis of surface powered haulage accidents involving off-highway haul trucks in openpit mining, the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), reported 1,300 fatal accidents from 1990 to 2005. Of these, 163 were considered off-highway truck haulage accidents, and at least 23 involved collisions of an off-highway truck with a neighboring vehicle or a worker on foot (Nieto and Dagdelen, 2006). In general, an average of 18 nonfatal accidents and three fatal accidents occurred in openpit mining per year when equipment backed over the edge of an embankment, stockpile or dump point (Fessak, et al., 2003). The specific problems that need to be solved can be determined by carefully studying the accidents involving haulage trucks (Marrara, et al., 2004). Solutions to haulage truck safety must consider the human factors affecting each task even when engineering solutions seem most appropriate. In surface haulage, human performance becomes a critical issue because of the unusual demand the vehicle?s places on their human operators: ? Roadways and working areas change frequently in mining operations. ? The sheer mass of mining equipment such as trucks requires control inputs (e.g., braking) far in advance of the desired action. ? Rough roads, loading and unloading impacts can subject the driver to dangerous shocks and vibration. ? Visibility is sharply curtailed by the bulk of the vehicle generating large blind spots. All of the above issues can be attributed partially to the lack of visibility (Pyles et al., 2003). Driver visibility and communications are key issues to reduce mining truck accidents. Analysis of fatalities and injuries involving mining equipment demonstrates the need to develop new intervention and control strategies to mitigate the risks associated with mining equipment operation. Ongoing development of these and other new strategies is required to achieve a reduction of injury in the mining industry

"Abstract In recent years, there have been major problems with deep excavations in urban areas supported by diaphragm walls. In some cases, like the fatal Nicoll Highway collapse in Singapore the quality of the D-walls was not the cause. However in other projects, like the problems with the major leak in the walls of the Boston Big Dig and with leakage in a few projects in Belgium and The Netherlands was related to poor D-wall quality. Leakage through the D-walls at the joints in deep excavations led in these cases to very serious settlement behind the walls, in the case of the North- South line in Amsterdam, there was severe damage to historical buildings. This paper describes ongoing research that focusses i on acquiring more knowledge on and improvement of D-wall installation, in particular the flow process prior and during casting ii on the detection of anomalies prior to excavation and iii on the composition of the concrete mixture in view of a better and more sustainable concrete quality of D-walls.INTRODUCTIONIn the case of deep excavations in urban areas close to neighbouring buildings, diaphragm walls are one of the best feasible solutions for the retaining structure. Although the costs of D-walls generally exceed the costs of alternative wall solutions, the advantages are decisive in many situations. The main advantages of D-walls are the limited impact of the installation on the built environment, the high stiffness and bearing capacity and the retention of water, even at considerable depths. This makes Dwalls often the preferred solution for deep excavations Sometimes the D-walls are the temporary support while for the final stage a complete concrete box is constructed in the excavation. In many other cases the D-wall has the permanent function of retaining soil as well as groundwater.In the last ten years, there have been major problems with deep excavations in urban areas supported by diaphragm walls. In some cases, like the fatal Nicoll Highway collapse, 2004 , the quality of the Dwalls was not the cause. In other important failures like the collapse of the Archives in Cologne, 2008 and Dubai Infinity Tower Flooding, 2007 a combination of design and quality issues played a role. However, the major leak in the walls of the Boston Big Dig was related to poor D-wall quality (McNichol, 2000). Van Tol et al, (2010) describe a number of case studies in Belgium and the Netherlands, with leakage through the D-walls at stop end joints. In several cases with deep excavations these leakage caused serious surface settlements behind the walls. In the case of the North-South line in Amsterdam, there was severe damage to historical buildings. All these cases have generated considerable additional costs and delays, and subsequently public and political concern. Van Tol et al. (2010) present several possibilities to improve the quality of D-walls.Other disputes related to D-walls deal with the quality of the concrete and the sustainability of D-walls applied as a permanent wall. In particular the porosity of the concrete cover is sometimes problematic."

"A shallow till sampling program was completed on a 1 km grid over the St . George Batholith in southern New Brunswick. The ""B"" soil horizon was analyzed for Cu, Pb, Zn, Ag, Co, Mo, U and Sb and the heavy minerals from the ""C"" soil horizon were analyzed for W, Sn and A u. The results delineated four of five recorded W occurrences, three of four recorded Mo occurrences, all recorded Cu occurrences and one recorded Au occurrence. The results indicate that shallow till sampling in conjunction with bedrock and Quaternary mapping can inexpensively define exploration targets in terrain similar to that underlain by the St. George Batholith.A similar program was carried out in eastern Ontario involving the analysis of four separates from the till, the ""8"" soil horizon, the -50 mesh fraction, the -250 mesh and the heavy mineral fraction of the ""C"" soil horizon and humus. Also sampling was carried out near known gold occurrences at closer spacings. Regionally, anomalous results from all sample media clearly defined a large auriferous shear zone and associated splays. Over one known showing all media clearly defined the showing and a secondary zone. On the regional scale the heavy mineral fraction gave the best anomaly definition and contrast, but the -250 mesh fraction was found to be the most cost effective for defining exploration targets. For detailed surveys, humus was found to be cost-effective."

Mineral output and trade in the Central American countries were directly or indirectly affected by the sometimes violent civil unrest and recessionary economic developments that have pervaded the region for several years. Central American countries found their foreign exchange export earnings and traditional market areas shrinking while essential import costs were rising. Restricted spending measures were adopted by governments and private industries. Domestic investment funds for mineral development and exploration projects were among the first casualties of these austere budgetary measures, especially since weak demand and depressed mineral prices diminished the probability of a favorable cost-benefit ratio. The lack of physical security and political stability also discouraged private foreign investment. The United States Congress enacted the Caribbean Basin Economic Recovery Act of 1983 (19 U.S.C. 2702), more popularly known as the Caribbean Basin Initiative (CBI). This legislation was designed to stimulate economic recovery and promote economic development by increasing private investment and trade in the Caribbean Basin countries. The act provided for the elimination of U.S. duties on most trade items imported directly from eligible Caribbean countries, provided at least 35% of the product value originated in the region. The financial assistance components of the CBI were to be supportive of the basin's private sector as well as assist general economic stabilization programs.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the effect of up to 1 wt-pct of copper and silicon on the heat treatment response and hardness, tensile, and impact properties of hot-rolled medium-carbon steels. The steels were prepared by induction melting and fabricated into plates by forging and rolling. The tensile strength of 0.2-wt-pct carbon steels containing 0.3 wt-pct silicon was affected significantly by copper in both the hot-rolled and heat-treated (600° C) conditions, whereas the tensile strength of the 0.3-wt-pct carbon steels was less affected. A 600° C treatment was considered optimum as a post-rolling treatment to strengthen the steels by copper precipitation. Strengthening of 0.2-wt-pct carbon steels by silicon was reduced by increasing copper contents.. Optimum impact strengths occurred at about 0.3 wt-pct silicon in 0.2-wt-pct carbon steels containing 0.6 and 0.8 wt-pct copper. The impact strengths were lowest for 0.2-wt-pct carbon steels containing over 0.8 wt-pct copper and greater than 0.3 wt-pct silicon, especially in the heat-treated condition. Copper and silicon solutes and copper precipitates strengthened the steels. This effect was augmented slightly by strengthening through grain refinement by these solutes.

Premature coating failures of new and refurbished structural steelwork of clarifiers have been a common occurrence at power generation plant in recent years. Several of these failures have ended in disputes regarding which party was actually to blame for the early degradation of the coating system, i.e. quality of the power station?s water, poor application, substandard materials, outdated corrosion protection specifications, etc. Having investigated several of these premature failures, it is clear that the corrosion protection of clarifier steelwork is a highly complicated process and that the painting work needs to be closely monitored in order to ensure long-term protection by whichever product that is applied. The need for quality control inspections during the painting of the plant is often underrated during the project planning stage, also the importance of detailed corrosion protection specifications that consider not only the practical application of the materials, but also the quality control responsibilities of the Contractor, End User and Third Party Inspectorates that may be involved. This paper considers the application constraints of coatings to clarifier structural steelwork and importance of stringent quality control procedures in order to ensure the long-term performance of the corrosion protection systems.

AUTHENTIC records show that coal mining in Cape Breton dates from the year 1720, when the French military authorities obtained coal from what is now known as the Blockhouse seam, in the Morien district, for use at Louisburg, where the fortress, now of such historic interest, was being built. Thereafter, coal was mined more or less continuously, and although, for many years, in a very haphazard way, there was, on the whole, a steady growth towards a better regulation of the industry, culminating in the year 1825 with the arrival of the General Mining Association in Nova Scotia. This Company, more generally known as the G.M.A., had acquired extensive tracts in Brazil and Colombia and had also purchased the mining rights for the whole of Nova Scotia-excepting such areas as had been previously leased-the attraction being the rich veins of copper currently reported as occurring in the Province. These fabulous copper veins, upon examination, failed to materialize, but the engineer sent out to report on them returned with such good accounts of the coalfields he had seen that steps were taken immediately to investigate them. From that rime onward, the history of coal mining in Nova Scotia is one of progress and achievement. One of the first acts of the G.M.A. was to acquire the areas already leased to other concerns and develop these in a masterly fashion, employing the best machinery and talent available at that time. Such dominant control over the minerals of the Province, although it led to orderly development in the several coalfields, also, later on, resulted in restricting operations in the various coal centres to such an extent that a determined effort was put forward by the people of Nova Scotia to end such a state of affairs. Consequently, in 1857, the original lease of the G.M.A. was abrogated, the Company, however, being allowed to retain certain areas in the districts it had already developed. This opened the way for the formation of other coal-mining companies, and numbers of these immediately sprang into existence in the various coal-mining centres. In 1893, the Dominion Coal Company, Limited, was formed by the amalgamation of seven companies operating in the neighbourhood of Glace Bay, in Cape Breton. Later, in 1910, the Dominion Iron & Steel Company, Limited, obtained control of the Cumberland Railway & Coal Company, which had been formed in 1884 to acquire the rights of the two companies working in the Cumberland County coalfield.

A pile driving and testing program was undertaken to evaluate installation procedures, assess capacity, particularly in uplift, of 360- and 460-mm (14- and 18-inch) square prestressed concrete piles and provide foundation design parameters for the New Mid-Point Bridge project in Fort Myers, Florida. Nine piles were dynamically monitored during installation, and six piles were monitored during restrike driving to evaluate pile drivability and uplift and bearing capacity including time related capacity increases due to soil "set-up". In addition, two static load tests (tension and compression) were performed to calibrated the results obtain during the dynamic testing. This paper presents descriptions of the pile driving testing program along with findings regarding pile uplift and compression capacities from the static load testing, pile capacities from dynamic testing (CAPWAP® analyses), soil-pile adhesion values, wave equation factors, soil strength vs. time dependency, foundation design (anticipated pile tip elevation) and pile driving recommendations.

Deep level block caving as a mining method is becoming more popular due to the fact that it is the lowest cost per ton underground extraction system. However, many block caves do not achieve their full potential due to draw horizon instability. In this paper five design rules are given to overcome this problem. The design rules described are applicable for slusher and trackless block caves where the operational depths exceed 500 metres.

When a gas is displaced by mother in a porous medium, and there is a relative immobile liquid present. there is a transition zone in which the gas composition varies from essentially that of the original gas to that of the injected gas. The change in extent of this zone with time may be governed by a mixing process in the direction of flow and by the rate of establishment of gas-liquid equilibrium, if the gases are appreciably soluble in the liquid. The relative importance of these two factors in deterri~ining the growth of the transition zone is discussed, with appropriate equations and experimental data. INTRODUCTION The various solution methods of oil recovery involve a transfer of the components of a mixture, whether within a single phase or between a liquid and gas. The similarity of a natural porous medium to systems used in separation and chromatographic processes makes it seem reasonable that certain concepts used by chemical engineers in "mass transfer" might be applicable to petroleum reservoirs. One approach, the HETP (height equivalent to a theoretical plate), involves a distance or length of time over which equilibrium might be con. sidered as established. Another approach involves direct use of a rate of mixing or rate of establishment of equilibrium. The latter approach has been preferred in relation to production problems. DISCUSSION AND PROCEDURE When a gas or liquid in a porous medium is displaced by one of different composition but miscible with it there will be set up a transition zone in which the composition varies from cssentially that of the original fluid to essentially that of the injected fluid. Removing the ledge formation in the Hall-Heroult cell during the electrolysis process may significantly reduce the energy requirement of the aluminium production process. In the absence of the ledge, however, the sidewall-material types become heavily restricted since the cryolite is very corrosive at the electrolysis temperatures. This paper study the corrosion behaviour of sintered nickel ferrite, nickel aluminate, and magnesium aluminate refractories (as possible candidates for sidewall material) in molten aluminium and cryolite melts with various alumina content at 980°C. Immersion tests of refractories with various porosity were conducted to assess the suitability of the refractories in the corrosive environment of the electrolysis cells. Microstructural change of the refractory after immersion were analysed using secondary scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Sampling of the melts were taken at 0, 10 min, 30 min, and each hour up to 6 hrs, and subsequently analysed by Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) spectroscopy. Based on the projected concentration of the refractories constituents in the melts, it was predicted that the corrosion rate of NiFe2O4, NiAl2O4 and MgAl2O4 in cryolite with 11 wt per cent Al2O3 were 461 × 103, 1.03 × 103, and 798 × 103 cm/a, respectively. Much lower corrosion rate of 2.3 cm/a for NiFe2O4, 2.6 cm/a for NiAl2O4 and 0.3 cm/a for MgAl2O4 were predicted if the refractories in contact with aluminium melts. Erosion played an important role in the corrosion as the concentration of the refractory constituents in the melts were beyond its solubility limit. It is therefore crucial to increase the densities of the refractory and improve its wetting characteristics.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Baiyinnuo’er Zn-Pb deposit is a typical skarn deposit in NE China. Skarn and orebodies mainly occur between different units of the Lower Permian Huanggangliang Formation carbonates-sandstone-mudstone or within the contact between intrusions and marble. Skarn minerals are dominated by prograde garnet and clinopyroxene, and the main ore minerals are sphalerite and galena. We conducted single fluid inclusion compositional studies using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry on clinopyroxene (pre-ore-stage mineral) and sphalerite and calcite (syn-ore-stage minerals). The results show that the Baiyinnuo’er fluids are distinctly different from basinal brine but similar to magmatic fluid, thereby indicating that the deposit has a dominantly magmatic origin. This interpretation has also been supported by the Cl/Br mole ratios, which remain stable (~500) in different fluid stages. The decreases for most of the elements in the fluid inclusions from pre-ore-stage clinopyroxene to syn-ore-stage sphalerite and calcite suggest that mixing with groundwater has occurred during mineralisation, with significant Zn, Pb and Ag deposition.CITATION:Shu, Q, Hammerli, J, Chang, Z, Lai, Y and Huizenga, J-M, 2015. The planning and operation of ventilation network systems for uranium mines require special considerations since ventilation is the primary technique of controlling ambient concentrations of radon progeny. The major environmental challenge facing the ventilation engineer is the requirement to dilute radon progeny to below the Working Level Month per year of worker exposure required by law. The application of large airflow volumes and the utilization of low residence times constitute some of the factors considered by the design engineer. Good mine planning and sequencing are also critical for protecting the health of miners. The mine ventilation must have such characteristics as flexibility, high air distribution efficiency, rapid air transit times, zero recirculation and no short-circuiting. A well established maintenance program for all ventilation appliances must be in place to guarantee control of the distribution system. Real-time monitoring systems permit assurance the adequate quality of air is delivered to working places. A case study for an operating mine is used to demonstrate how the ventilation system is successfully managed and operated using the above concepts.

As ligas de titânio ao Nióbio apresentam grande potencial de desenvolvimento graças a excelentes combinações de propriedades. O tratamento termomecânico a elas conferido é importante para atingir as propriedades desejadas. O presente estudo tem como objetivo avaliar o efeito da conformação mecânica nas propriedades da liga Ti42Nb forjada a frio com 80% de encruamento e seguido de envelhecimento. Foram realizados ensaios de tração, medidas de dureza, metalografia e microscopia das superfícies de fratura. Foi possível observar que a liga Ti42Nb apresentou maior dureza e consequentemente maior resistência após o envelhecimento.

Abstract-The late Archean Pipestone Lake anorthosite complex (PLAC) is a 0.9 x 17 km sill-like layered intrusion that is part of a suite of coeval megacrystic anorthosite bodies in the Cross Lake region, northwestern Superior Province. Exploration for Ti-V-Fe oxide mineralization and concurrent geological investigations have contributed to a greater understanding of the lithostratigraphy of the PLAC and its oxide mineralization. Mapping and drill core studies have established a laterally continuous igneous stratigraphy comprising six leucogabbro/anorthosite zones and three melagabbro/gabbro zones. Field evidence, including disrupted blocks of layered units, scour contacts, and size-graded and modally-graded layering, suggests younging towards both the northern and the central parts of the complex. A decrease in the anorthite content of the feldspars from An75 in the south to An30 in the north suggests that the magmas become more evolved to the north. Macrorhythmic layering and gross morphological features suggest that the PLAC crystallized from four major influxes of geochemically similar basaltic magmas. The paucity of magmatic erosional features in the PLAC indicates that layering developed in a relatively static magma chamber, so that in-situ crystallization processes are required to account for the observed petrologic diversity. Drilling has confirmed that a significant Ti- V-Fe resource is contained in two of the four discrete mineralized subzones in the PLAC. Textural evidence and the stratiform nature of the oxide-enriched subzones are consistent with a magmatic origin for the oxide mineralization.

Low-grade, complex mineral deposits have resulted in the need for complicated large-throughput processing plants delivering increased productivity, reliability, and utilization, together with reducing operational costs. Complex mineralogy has resulted in complicated process flow sheets designed to recover minerals as efficiently as possible. In addition, the remote location of many minerals-processing plants, continuously rising energy costs, and fierce competition pose significant challenges to the modern mine, compounded by a global scarcity of qualified and experienced operational personnel. Over the last decade the Internet and automation technologies have undergone major advancements. Automation technologies, solutions, and concepts that existed, but were considered risky or unreliable prior to the year 2000, have now gained acceptance and matured. Furthermore, new technologies and different collaboration schemes have appeared, offering innovative solutions to the mining industry to address many of the challenges described. These advancements in reliable remote systems that access technology through the Internet provide significant opportunity to support mining operations, enhance process performance, provide engineering services, and proactively anticipate and execute maintenance services. This paper references a global survey of automation trends in the mining industry and the potential for an intelligent collaborative environment using automation technologies to exploit opportunities in operating the plant of the future, increasing effectiveness, and reducing operational costs. A variety of possibilities are described, including asset management solutions, remote access capabilities, performance monitoring solutions, advanced process control technologies, and the formation of an intelligent collaborative environment. A real example where this technology is used to support the operation and maintenance at a cement plant in Egypt is given to underpin the concepts described in this paper.

A major challenge in managing coal seam gas (CSG) water is predicting how much water will be produced as the industry develops. Klohn Crippen Berger Ltd (KCB) was commissioned by the Queensland Department of Natural Resources and Mines (DNRM) to develop a tool to forecast where, when and how much CSG water will be produced in the Surat and Southern Bowen Basins under various industry expansion scenarios.The water production tool (WPT) uses the Theis equation, a non-equilibrium groundwater flow equation that accounts for the effect of pumping time on well yield in confined aquifers, to predict water production volumes. Where multiple pumping wells are in close proximity, the required pumping rates for coal seam depressurisation are reduced. Therefore, pumping effects are projected spatially to assess interference effects between wells. Water production is then upscaled to the projected scale of the CSG industry within the Surat and Southern Bowen Basins.Two modifications were made to address the dual phase nature of CSG extraction (a transmissivity reduction factor) and the impact of weathering at the eastern margin of the Surat Basin (a ænear edge effectÆ factor). These factors modify relevant hydrogeological parameters in a consistent and defensible manner to more closely match observed water production.The WPT was verified by comparing results to equivalent Theis equation calculations and to type curves provided by CSG proponents. Calibration was achieved by varying the spatial distribution and intensity of the near edge effect factor in conjunction with a chi-squared analysis of residuals.The tool, which is now being maintained and further developed by the Centre for Water in the Minerals Industry (CWiMI), was built to balance numerical complexity against relative flexibility and simulation speed. The result is a tool that can produce statistically relevant results of prescribed scenarios to plan water handling and treatment requirements in discrete zones of operation.CITATION:Strand, R, Reading, L and Keir, G, 2013. Geothermal heat might become an important fuel for several reasons: (1) To substitute for other scarce and critical fuels. (2) Because it may be less costly to the user than alternate fuels. (3) Because its production may be more profitable than production of other fuels. (4) Or for a number of other more or less non-economic reasons such as convenience or because of less environmental impact. In competition with conventional and other non-conventional fuels, geothermal heat must score well on one or more of those points. This study first considers projections of energy needs in several United States economic sectors and the technical possibility of geothermal heat substituting for other fuels in those sectors. Then, reported and projected costs of energy from geothermal heat are compared with costs of other fuels to show the relative costs of fuels in several economic sectors. Relative costs are reported from a sample of real and hypothetical geothermal projects. The actual cost of energy will vary with each application and the particular circumstances of each geographic location.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines constructed a large-scaJe facility to study the self-heating of a large coal mass under conditions that simulate a gob area of a mine. The insulated coal chamber can hold up to 13 short tons (st) of coal and is provided with a forced ventilation system and computer-controlled temperature and gas measurement systems to monitor the heat and mass transfer phenomena that occur in the coalbed. Three experiments were completed with high-volatile C bituminous coals that exhibited high spontaneous combustion potentials in laboratory-scale tests. In the first two tests, a sustained heating was not achieved. In the third test, temperatures throughout the coalbed increased steadily from the start, with thermal runaway occurring near the center of the coalbed after 23 days. The thermal reaction wne then moved toward the front of the coalbed. The results of these tests showed that the self-heating of a large coal mass depends not just on the reactivity of the coal, but also on the particle size of the coal, the freshness of the coal surfaces, the heat-of-wetting effect, and the availability of O2 at optimum ventilation rates.
