"Suncor Energy Inc. has proposed a 2.2 billion dollar expansion to the current oil sands operation, which will more than double the productive capability of the facility. As part of the application for this expansion, a comprehensive closure plan had to be developed and filed.Closure planning includes a systematic evaluation of the area to be developed, the development activities planned, the goals and objectives of the corporation in re-establishing landforms and ecosystems at the same time as running an effective operation. As early as is practical during the mine development, surface contouring is completed, soil is reconstructed, and vegetation, surface drainage and wetlands are re-established. Once active reclamation is complete and vegetation has been re-established, Suncor monitors maturation of landscapes and ecosystems to provide the submission basis for reclamation certification"

The ability of an explosive to break rock is influenced considerably by the extent of confinement in the blasthole. It is believed that confinement is improved by the use of adequate stemming. The aim of this paper is to present the results of the first and second stages of developing a stemming performance testing rig for small diameter boreholes. The rig was used to compare and contrast the performance of different designs of products. The results showed that different stemming products have differences in terms of their functionality, which can have a major impact on the efficiency of rock breaking. Two test procedures were used, one through the exclusive use of compressed air and the second using a purpose-built high pressure test rig with small quantities of explosives. Both tests were used to identify and evaluate the ability of various stemming products to resist the escape of explosive gas through the collar of a blasthole. An investigation was done to determine the types of stemming products most commonly used in South African underground hard rock mines, and these products were used during the tests. The first stage of tests using compressed air only did not prove adequate to predict with certainty the pressure behaviour in the borehole of a particular product under high pressure conditions. The purpose-built high pressure test rig also did not prove to be a very effective tool to test stemming products under high pressure conditions. The test rig incorporated only the effect of gas pressure on the stemming product, and excluded the effect of the shock wave. This study therefore proved that to take into account only the gas pressure generated in the blasthole is not sufficient to effectively test stemming product performance.

Hydrofluoric acid (HF) is traditionally used in plant operation to separate feldspars from quartz. It acts during the conditioning step as a pH regulator and an activating agent providing an excellent selectivity. However, a corrosive chemical environment and the ecological impacts from the potential fluoride ion contamination are limiting factors to use this chemical agent at an industrial scale. Investigations of the amine-feldspar interactions in the absence and presence of non-linear long-chain alcohols were carried out on two ore samples. The presence of alcohol molecules led to form a closed packed layer only on the surface of feldspars. The highest order and packing at the feldspar surface were observed with a particular alkyl chain structure as Guerbert alcohols. A new flotation process was developed and tested at both lab and pilot scales on different feldspar ores. The Guerbert alcohols allow to perform a feldspar concentrate with very low content in quartz (2.3-3.5 %) and feldspars recovery from 78 to 81 % while the aliphatic isoalcohols show a more higher recovery level (88-89 %). New HF-free process is strongly dependent on the pH range (1.7-2.5) and sulphuric acid consumption during conditioning steps. Optimal amine/alcohol weight ratio is ranged between 0.8 and 1.0. The values below 0.8 decrease strongly the flotation selectivity and the quartz recovery within the feldspar concentrates is higher than that occurs with HF.

These proceedings consist of papers presented at two Bureau of Mines Technology Transfer Seminars for the purpose of disseminating recent advances in mining technology related to coal mine fire and explosion prevention. Primary, although not exclusive, emphasis is placed on underground coal mining. The papers address research accomplishments ranging from methods for detecting mine fires to remote sealing systems for extinguishing coal mine fires. Each paper represents the current state-of-the-art in the respective research categories. Presentations include research occurring from both Bureau in-house and contract efforts.

Although ASARCO Incorporated, the only domestic producer, had terminated copper smelting operations and associated recovery of byproduct arsenic trioxide at Tacoma, WA, in 1985, it shipped small quantities of both trioxide and metal from its remaining stocks in 1986. Imports for consumption of arsenic trioxide increased significantly, owing to increased demand for arsenical wood preservatives and the decrease in domestic shipments of trioxide. Prices remained unchanged throughout the year. Development of gallium arsenide integrated circuits, important in advanced military and commercial electronics circuitry, continued to gain momentum during 1986. Domestic Data Coverage.-Shipments of small amounts of arsenic trioxide and metal from remaining stocks by Asarco were reported voluntarily to the Bureau of Mines.

Magnetite deposits with distinctive ¦ actinolite ¦ apatite-bearing gangue and spatially-extensive sodic-calcic wall rock alteration occur in both Proterozoic metamorphic terrains and Mesozoic-Tertiary magmatic arcs. Examples from both settings constitute significant sources of iron ore (egKiruna, Sweden; El Romeral, Chile) and some host major Cu-Au deposits that have a local association with K-silicate alteration (eg Cloncurry district, NW Queensland; Copiapo district, Chile). A growing body of evidence points to a hydrothermal origin for these systems involving high temperature, low S oxidised fluids. The Cloncurry magnetite-Cu-Au deposits are products of the local structurally channelised influx of a specialised high salinity ore fluid into larger-scale alteration systems developed during pluton emplacement at greater depths than those associated with subvolcanic (porphyry) Cu-Au deposits. The geological characteristics of deposits in magmatic arcs are consistent with a similar mode of origin albeit in rather different tectonic settings.

This work investigated the chemical and mineralogical properties of CaO-SiO2-CrOx-CaF2- MgO slags. Synthetic slags were prepared and the effect of the slag basicity (CaO/SiO2) and MgO contents on the stability of the mineralogical species formed was analyzed. The morphology and composition of the slags were analyzed by XRD and SEM-EDS, whilst their chemical stability was evaluated by leaching with an aqueous acetic acid solution. It was found that in slags with CaO/SiO2 = 1, the main Cr-compound was MgCr2O4 spinel, which forms octahedron crystals. Small amounts of CaCr2O4 and CaCrO4 were also observed. It was found that increasing the slag basicity from 1 to 2 the compounds MgCr2O4 and CaCr2O4 were formed together with the Cr(V)-containing compound complex Ca5(CrO4)3F which forms hexagonal crystals. The results showed that the highest chromium concentration levels in the leaching liquors corresponded to slags with CaO/SiO2 = 2, probably owing to the formation of Ca5(CrO4)3F.

Explosions in underground coal mines have been a serious safety concern since the advent of mining; despite significant technological advances, they are still occurring. Parameters such as barometric pressure, geological changes, and changes in ventilation can contribute to an explosion. These factors can be monitored with available and developing technologies to create algorithms that predict when explosions are more likely to occur. This paper reviews current underground atmospheric monitoring systems and related regulations around the world. In addition, suggestions for improvement and implications for explosion prevention are discussed.

A unique sluicing process for recovering tailing impounded in a valley was developed by Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Ltd., West Coast Mines, Rosebery, Tasmania.Earthmoving equipment could not be used as most of the material to be recovered was semi-fluid. A conventional sluking method was also impracticable as there was no suitable working face from which the process could be commenced.Operations started from a flat surface, using special techniques for sinking through the tailing and establishing producing working faces as the sinking process continued.After about 2 years the bottom of the dam was reached and conventional sluicing methods could be used.

In a previous article1 the function of various fatty acids as collectors for iron ores was reported for the two alternate processes; (a) the flotation of iron-oxide minerals, and (b) the flotation of calcium-activated siliceous gangue. The selectivity of separation was shown to be markedly dependent not only on such common parameters as pH and the levels of collector and activator addition, but also on the structure and the degree of unsaturation of the acids used. The iron ores employed consisted primarily of hematite, goethite, and quartz and as the effectiveness of any one acid on the separation depends on the individual response of each constituent mineral toward the given collector, a comprehensive knowledge of the floatability of the individual minerals is desirable for the interpretation of the results obtained. The mechanism by which a collector ion becomes attached to a mineral-solution interface has been a subject of much investigation. From quantitative studies of the properties of the electrical double layer on mercury2 and on several solid surfaces3,4,5,6 , the adsorption of some flotation reagents at the mineral-solution interface is beginning to be understood. For example, it has been demonstrated from streaming potential measurements made on quartz5 and corundum6 that the interfacial electrical condition is strongly dependent on the pH. Thisoccurs presumably through the following electrolytic reaction at the interface, and in the presence of a flotation collector, controls the floatability of the solids. A concurrent investigation of the flotation behavior of goethite and of quartz carried out at the School of Mines and Metallurgy7 has shown a positive correlation with the electrokinetic behavior of these minerals. The purpose of the present investigation was to collect general information on the floatability of hematite, and to investigate the function of various 18-carbon aliphatic acids on the floatability of hematite, goethite, and of activated quartz. Electrophoretic mobility measurements, simplified flotation tests using a modified Hallimond tube, and contact angle and frothability measurements were employed. A zinc-lead-iron sulphide concentrate from McArthur River can be leached at atmospheric pressure in aqueous solutions with HCI, FeCl3, CuCI2, HCl/02 HC1/02/ CuCI2, Cl2, and CI2/CuCI2 to extract >98 per cent zinc, >90 per cent silver, and <15 per cent iron in 1-7 h at 95°. Galena is more reactive than sphalerite and is converted to lead chloride. Except for leaching with HCI, elemental sulphur is the the main by-product of the leach with little or no sulphate ion detected. The rates and products of these reactions are compared. It is recommended that aqueous slurries of the concentrate (50 per cent w/v) are leached at atmospheric pressure with Cl2 in the presence of copper(II) chloride, which accelerates the extraction of zinc. Hydrochloric acid is a by-product which is consumed bYJeaction with fresh concentrate in air at 60°. Copper is subsequently stripped from the leach solution and recycled by reaction with fresh concentrate at 100°. The separation, recovery, and electrolysis of zinc and lead chloride is outlined since this process would produce Cl2 gas which can be recycled and used directly in the leaching stage.

For the recovery of uranium from spent nuclear fuel, sulfide reprocessing process, which consists of voloxidation, selective sulfurization, and magnetic separation or selective dissolution steps, are proposed. In this paper selective sulfurization of rare-earth oxides in the presence of uranium oxides was studied by thermogravimetry and X-ray diffractometry. In case of the mixture with UO2, the rare earth oxides R2O3 (R=Nd, Eu, etc.) were preferentially sulfurized by CS2 formingoxysulfides and sulfides, while UO2 remained at temperatures lower than 500 °C. When R2O3was mixed with U3O8, first, the reduction of U3O8 to UO2 occurred at low temperatures followed by the sulfurization of R2O3. The separation of rare earth elements from UO2 in suspensionsolution by the use of permanent magnet was examined. The advantage of the proposed process was also discussed by compared with current process.

This paper shall present the design and construction of bored pile and diaphragm wall for the proposed MHA complex in Singapore. The work was carried out by L&M Foundation Specialist Pte Ltd and PWD Consultants Pte Ltd was the consultant for this project. A brief description of the project is first presented to illustrate the scope and scale of the work involved, which includes the construction of bored piles and diaphragm walls and installation of steel stanchions in the bored piles. This is followed by a description of the methodology used to analyse and design the wall and bored piles. As both towers in this project are supported on bored piled foundation and are constructed by top down construction method, the analysis of the wall has taken into consideration the sequence of work phase by phase and this was carried out by means of a commercial finite element program called CRISP. Modelling of the problem will be briefly described and the findings from the numerical analysis will be presented. This is followed by a description of the structural and geotechnical design aspects of bored piles. The paper shall then describe the difficulties encountered for this project and solution used to solve the problem. The subsoil condition will be described with special mention on the encounter of very strong granitic rock at depth above the maximum excavation level of the basement at certain locations, hence necessitating the drilling of rock for a considerable depth for both bored piles and diaphragm wall. At this juncture, the construction method used to drill through the rock will be briefly described. For construction of bored piles, penetration of rock was carried out by chiselling or drilling using reverse circulation rigs. For construction of diaphragm wall, it requires the employment of Bauer hard rock cutter which uses cutting wheels fitted with roller bits and are capable of excavating into granitic rock of compressive strengths more than 100 MPa.

The manganiferous schists occurring in the vicinity of Kings Mountain, North and South Carolina, suggest significant tonnages of potential submarginal ores. Although some reconnaissance work in connection with these deposits has been reported, no recent information has been published. Evaluation of the schists as a possible domestic manganese resource has not always adequately considered the fact that the manganese content occurs quantitatively both as oxide and as the silicate, spessartite. The Bureau of Mines investigation herein reported includes preliminary studies to indicate the extent of manganese oxide mineralization and to deter-mine the amenability of the material to sulfur dioxide leaching. The field reconnaissance studies suggest a resource containing in one area an average of 6.4 percent manganese as oxide. The procurement of depth information was beyond the scope of the investigation.

"Increased production of explosives in the United States in 1933 compared with 1932 is shown by statistics compiled by the Demographical Division, Health and Safety Branch, United States Bureau of Mines. The figures relate only to explosives used for industries purposes, such as mining, quarrying, and road building, and do not cover nonindustrial explosives, such as ammunition or fireworks. Industrial explosives include black blasting powder, permissible explosives, 5 and high explosives other than permissibles figures in the tables of this report were compiled from reports covering sales by the individual companies manufacture of explosives in the United States in 1933. Because of the close agreement among the several series of figures, the quantity of explosives sold is considered as reflecting production and consumption, and the three terms ""sales"", ""production"", and ""consumption"" are used interchangeably in the discussion unless otherwise stated.Of the principal industries that use high construction operations accounted for the largest percentage of increase in consumption during 1933; metal mining and quarrying also used more of this class of explosives than in the previous year. Coal mining is the chief consumer of permissible explosives; the figures for 1933 showed that bituminous-coal mining used a larger quantity than in 1932, and that anthracite mines also showed a small increase. Although a net increase of less than 1 percent in consumption was reported for black blasting powder, large increases in use of this class of explosives were reported for metal mining, miscellaneous types of work, and bituminous-coal mining. This paper examines some of the fundamental economics of mining - in particular, for optimisation studies, for production rate determination and for reserve estimates.It includes introductory discussion on the principles as to how economics drives mining investment decision-making, applicable to the optimising of pit shapes and production, or truck fleets, or any other part of the mine.The main part of this paper looks at the decision to start-up a mine and why the 'optimum' production rate to start-up a mine is not the point of lowest cost according to traditional discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis. The optimum production rate is usually substantially less than this rate. The paper recognises the difference between typical mining investments and investments in other industries that do not have the unique characteristics of mining and the problem of uncertainty resolution. It examines the marginal revenue effects, the marginal cost of capital and the value of a real option to expand pending uncertainty resolution as determinants of optimum initial production rates.The final part of this paper looks at applying these principles to renewable and non-renewable resources. It examines mine life and reserve estimates from an economic perspective.

"Interest in the nitrogen content of steel has increased sharply in the last few years. Investigations have indicated that its presence in steel has an important bearing on high temperature brittleness3, magnetic properties4, room temperature hardening5, and shock resistance. The steel producer may therefore look forward with certaintly to the necessity of controlling this element in a considerable proportion of his product. The literature, however, reveals a great many contradictory statements concerning the percentage of nitrogen which must be present to produce given effects on the properties of iron and steel. Most of these arise from a misunderstanding of the nature of the iron-nitrogen diagram near the iron end and a lack of recognition of the effect of state of aggregation on physical properties although both have been fairly well worked out.My thanks are due to Mr. J. Motok for furnishing a valuable bibliography and translations of articles by Must and Duhr.The iron-nitrogen diagram in the solid state, so far as it concerns the nitrogen content of commercial iron and steel, consists simply in a solubility curve increasing with temperature. The important thing about this solubility curve is that without cold wore the iron nitride when precipitated does not go into solution on heating for long periods below 300°C. This slowness of solution is probably due to the fact that iron nitride when present as a separate phase has at these temperatures an equilibrium pressure of several thousand atmospheres7 and that therefore each particle of iron nitride surrounds itself with a layer of nitrogen. The precipitation of such an unstable crystal presents points of interest thermodynamically but we can not go into these here. It is quite well established that it precipitate. It can not diffuse then unless this layer is broken through or the temperature and pressure are increased to a point where the nitrogen is absorbed at an appreciable rate in the surrounding iron. This rate will depend on the degree of unsaturation of the iron and the excess pressure of the nitrogen above equilibrium pressure. The degree of unsaturation is determined by the temperature alone so that the temperature at which the rate of solution of the nitride becomes appreciable will depend on the pressure of nitrogen developed. This, in turn, will depend on the balance between rate of decomposition of the nitride and the rate o: flow of the iron. In annealed iron, this temperature of appreciable solution rate is between 300 and 350°C.8 By cold work, however, the elastic limit of the iron is increased, and conditions for the nitride to go into solution are reached at a much lower temperature, giving rise to the so-called blue brittleness. This brittleness and hardening is due to iron nitride going into solid solution and is not precipitation hardening."

"A flotation bank consists of a serial arrangement of cells. How to optimally operate a bank remains a challenge. This article reviews three strategies for optimizing bank performance: air profiling, mass-pull (froth velocity) profiling and Peak Air Recovery (PAR) profiling. These are all ways of manipulating the recovery profile down a bank, which may be the property being exploited. Mathematical analysis has shown that a flat cell-by-cell recovery profile maximizes the separation of two floatable minerals for a given target bank recovery when the relative floatability is constant down the bank. Available bank survey data is analyzed in respect to recovery profiling. Possible variations on recovery profile to minimize entrainment are discussed.INTRODUCTION Flotation is used to separate valuable minerals from each other and from gangue. To reach a target metallurgical performance, usually assessed in terms of concentrate grade and recovery, feed is passed through stages such as roughing, cleaning and scavenging. All these stages comprise serial arrangements of flotation cells known as banks, lines or rows. Although a bank is the simplest interconnection of cells in a circuit, i.e. the tails of one cell is the feed to the next cell down the bank, how to operate each flotation cell in a way that the whole bank performance is optimized remains a challenge. Significant efforts have been made towards understanding the effect of operating variables on the flotation performance of an isolated cell (Lynch et al., 1981; Finch and Dobby, 1990; Gorain et al., 1998). However in the case of banks the variables that can be manipulated increase with the number of cells in the bank and the problem of how to manipulate them to achieve optimum performance is difficult even disregarding variation in ore characteristics (Lynch et al., 1981, p. 16). In general, the more manipulated variables available the better for optimization purposes, however without clear guidance how to effectively use them it becomes an “embarrassment of riches”."

The Blue Ridge Low Level Outlet (LLO) was a design/build contract to provide a secondary means of discharging water from the Blue Ridge Reservoir. The project involved driving a 3.25 m (11 ft) modified horseshoe tunnel by 293.5 m (963 ft) long utilizing conventional drill and blast methodology. The intake shaft and structure were constructed inside of a sheet pile cofferdam surrounded by a maximum of 20.1 m (66 ft) of water. The shaft was excavated 4.87 m(16 ft) diameter to a depth of 12.8 m (42 ft) below the tremie slab elevation. Steel lining, including a transition from 3.66 m to 2.74 m (12 to 9 ft) diameter and a90 degree elbow were installed in the inlet shaft and then backfilled with concrete. This paper will describe the RFP phase, the design phase, challenges of the underground construction and contractual challenges.

"Morphology is a tool that is rarely used for mineral breakage mechanism evaluation. Ground particles are typically assessed for their size distribution. They are also visually analyzed using image analysis. However, image analysis is not a comprehensive evaluation of the particle surface texture. It evaluates particle’s size parameters such as area, diameter, and perimeter amongst other features. On the other hand, morphology analysis takes the particle assessment to another level of detail. Morphology analysis evaluates particles’ roundness, elongation and angularity that would indicate the degree of roughness of the particle. According to Roufail and Klein (2009), rougher surfaces are generated due to breakage along grain boundaries – intergranular breakage. Mill operation, particularly mill speed, dictates the dynamics in the mill. Stirred mills are known to break the particles via abrasion under standard operation. However, if the dynamics of the grinding media in the mill are changed, the particles could be more exposed to impact and compression loading that would lead to a different mode of breakage.In this paper, the effect of material properties and mill operating conditions on particle morphology will be studied. Hard non-sulfide versus soft sulfide minerals are compared, namely quartz and galena, respectively. Extreme mill speeds are tested covering the range of 1000 to 2000 rpm for a 4-litre Netzsch (ISA) mill. In addition to particle size distribution, micro-analysis is executed in the form of morphological analysis using a tested manual roughness point counting technique.INTRODUCTIONGrinding in general and stirred milling in particular are processes that are used to break particles to liberate metal-bearing minerals for further separation downstream. The energy required to achieve the target particle size versus maximum possible liberation has been studied intensively and it is usually the breaking point for the grinding system chosen in a process flowsheet. Operating conditions are dictated by the energy consumption. Becker et al. (2001) related different forms of energy such as input, specific, volume/mass specific energies to stress intensities and final product fineness. Other research studies focused on energy input in a stirred mill (Zheng, Harris and Somasundaran, 1996)."
