Particle shape and size distributions are among the most important parameters that affect the filtration efficiency of phosphogypsum in wet- process phosphoric acid production. Cost-effective enhancement in filtration rate is desired by phosphoric acid producers for higher plant capacity and lower operating costs. In this regard, numerous research efforts have been carried out in different laboratories as well as in pilot and plant testing. Nevertheless, changes in phosphogypsum crystal shape and size distribution deserve special attention. In this study, the results obtained in the presence of Crysmod and Hiflo-S5 surfactants are discussed. The influence of such additives on crystal morphology and size distribution are studied under different sulfate contents (supersaturation). The obtained data are correlated with process efficiency parameters such as filtration rate, digestion of rock, and recovery of phosphate values. Up to 60% increase in filtration rate is obtained. In addition, an increase in digestion efficiency and P205 recovery is achieved due to addition of surface active agents. The observed beneficial effects are explained in the light of the changes induced in crystal habit, size, and size distribution.

This paper deals with a group of subjects so familiar to all of us that we might question the need for discussion. Even so, nearly every day's business turns up expensive examples of differences in understanding, misdirected assumptions and incomplete technical purchase documents. As our international activities increase, so do these problem areas. Their expense in both money and embarrassment gives rise to this attempt to focus a little extra attention on technical criteria and specifications. The two terms ?criteria? and "specifications" are, we believe, worth separating with respect to meaning. They should not be used interchangeably, although they often are. Criteria are by definition "standards for judging", whereas specifications are "enumerations of particulars". In relation to plant or project engineering, the criteria are the general rules and data which apply to the whole project and the specifications are the further listing of detailed requirements for specific contractual items or pieces of equipment. We'll look a little more closely at specifications after we give another minute or two to this "criteria" subject,

The purpose of this research was to investigate airborne coal mine dust characteristics in order to assess the possibility of contribution of these characteristics to the incidence of coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP). The characteristics studied included physical (mass concentration and size distribution), chemical (elemental composition), and mineralogical (quartz and kaolinite content) variables of the dust. The results are based primarily upon analysis of the characteristics of 99 impactor samples from 18 mines in seven states. Because the eight stages of the impactor span the range of dust sizes up to 20 microns, the characteristics analyzed should represent respirable dust characteristics well and also provide size-dependent representations of the characteristics. In general, the patterns of mass concentration and size distribution in the various mines studied were similar with mass concentrations being high downwind of the continuous miner. The concentrations and size distributions were more variable upwind of the continuous miner, apparently as a result of the variations in the dust conditions in the working section. Significant size effects on the elemental and mineralogical content are shown in the data. Concentrations of most of the elements decrease as size decreases. However, minerals content increases as the dust size decreases. Regional variations of elemental and mineralogical content are also significant. Quartz and kaolinite contents are small in regions with low incidences of CWP. However, the elements of Cu and Zn are high by comparison to their content in high-incidence coal fields and may have the effect of protecting against the disease.

The hydrodynamic bearing was first described by, Reynolds in 1886, and has since been widely applied in motors, engines, compressors, hydroelectric turbines, and other machinery. For various reasons, the hydrostatic bearing currently predominates in the large, horizontal rotating machinery field (e.g. grinding mills). However, the current industry trend towards increasing size and energy efficiency has resulted in renewed interest in the advantages of hydrodynamic bearings. These advantages include structural improvements, reduced bearing friction, improved bearing life, improved transient characteristics, and reduced lubricant pump size and power requirements. In particular, the higher energy efficiency results in substantial savings on large machines. This paper describes some aspects of the design of large hydrodynamic bearings based on thirty years, of experience in the design of such bearings on grinding mills ranging in journal size from 2.1 m to 6.4 m, see Table 1.

In underground operations the evaluation of blasting fume dilution times and the application of recirculation techniques require accurate determination of the concentration of toxic fumes produced by the explosive used. This paper describes a methodology for obtaining concentrations of detonation products from commercial explosives tested under typical rock confinement and looks into the development of techniques for reducing toxic gases produced by explosives. This paper also analyses the application of techniques for the removal of toxic gas which would enable reduced re-entry times, a reduction in the quantity of fresh air and the use of air recirculation techniques, thereby providing substantial economic benefits to the industry. INTRODUCTION Toxic fumes from blasting operations are among the most common and serious hazards encountered underground. The implication of high concentrations of toxic gases emitted from blasting on the mine ventilation system are very significant and, in many cases, catastrophic results have occurred. Because blasting is a routine practice underground, the mining engineer is always confronted with the problem of controlling the fumes within acceptable levels. Typical control procedures employed underground include preventing or reducing the amount of fumes liberated from blasting through the proper selection of explosives and proper blasting techniques; removing the fumes through local exhaust systems or auxiliary ventilation (dilution ventilation); blasting off-shift, or at restricted times; localizing or isolating the effects of blasting where workings are isolated or sectionalized in the ventilation system; and absorbing some of the components of the fumes using air-water sprays. Dilution is one of the most effective control measures against blasting fumes and is universally applied. However, for precise determination of the dilution times for the fumes to reach safe concentrations, accurate determination of the concentration of toxic fumes produced by the explosives used is required. Research work has been carried out in determining the types and volumes of gases produced from blasting. In the case of ideal detonations, the nature and quantity of the fumes produced can be predicted by thermo-hydrodynamic calculations. However, commercial explosives exhibit non-ideal behaviour which is enhanced by the relatively small diameters of application in underground mines. The confinement offered by the surrounding rock further complicates the situation. It is well recognized that confinement affects performance and consequently fume generation. A detailed data base of fumes generated by commercial explosives at various conditions is introduced and the effect of blasting parameters such as, confinement, shock desensitization and incomplete detonations on toxic fume production is described for a variety of commercial explosives in use today. Thermodynamic predictions on fume production by the explosive compositions tested are also presented and compared with experimental results and their significance in assessing the quantity of fumes produced is discussed. A mathematical model capable of determining dilution ventilation requirements and dilution times to reduce the fume concentrations in the blasting zone to acceptable levels has been developed and it is being incorporated into a network system so that the effects of blasting can be simulated in typical mine ventilation systems. Solutions to the problem of controlling blast fumes within acceptable levels are described. These solutions include the use of control procedures which prevent and reduce the amount of fumes liberated from blasting. The use of low fume explosives, proper blasting techniques, dilution ventilation and filtration can be combined to effectively control fume production and save on costs. The application of these techniques to enable recirculation of underground air with reduced quantities of fresh air requirements is evaluated in a case study.

Heavy media processes have been used for cleaning +28 mesh coals for a number of years, Two applications, i.e., the vessels and the cyclones are widely used in the U. S. for this purpose. The basic reason for the popularity of these systems is their extremely high efficiencies for particle sizes above 28 mesh, However, application of heavy media technology to fine coals below 28 mesh, has been limited due to the following reasons: o Inability to make size separations effectively at sizes below 28 mesh o Necessity of feeding large quantitites of magnetite to the separators o Difficulty of recovering magnetite in the presence of large quantities of coal o High levels of coal contamination in the recovered media, leading to high circulating loads and ineffective control of media gravity

In order to further the understanding of spontaneous heating of longwall goafs a numerical model was developed, based on conservation principles applied to the transport of heat, water vapour and oxygen across the god Advective air flow into the goaf is caused by the differential air pressures across the god The air velocity field within the goaf area was computed using Darcy's law. The boundary and initial conditions concern air pressure, temperature and relative humidity. The oxidation rates and heat generation rates of the goaf materials required for the simulation were obtained from laboratory measurements. The main outputs of the model are temperature, oxygen and water contour maps, the rate of air leakage into the go4 velocity field and pressure distribution across the god. The model while still in its development stage, is able to simulate a heterogenous goafs constructed from different materials with different thermal and mass flow properties. Validation of the model by comparing its output with measurements from within goafs is required before the model can be used with confidence in a predictive sense.

Blasting is commonly viewed separately from mechanical handling and crushing. This view is misleading because the degree of fragmentation achieved by blasting can have a significant effect on the efficiency of these processes and, hence, on the overall cost of the mining operation. In this paper, aspects of blasting and crushing and their interaction are examined. A case study is also presented that dramatically illustrates the influence of blast fragmentation on subsequent processing and on the financial implications involved.

The effects of bacterial adaptation and partial replacement of leaching solution on the rate and extent of bioleaching reactions of a complex sulfidic gold ore were investigated. The ore was first concentrated by bulk sulfide, flotation, and the sulfide concentrate was treated by bioleaching using Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. The residues from bioleaching were treated by cyanidation to extract the gold and silver. Bacterial adaptation before bioleaching significantly increased the rate and extent of bioleaching reactions. Similarly, the daily partial replacement of leaching liquor enhanced to a great extent the leaching rate, and in some cases, increases of up to ten fold were observed. Both bacterial adaptation and solution replacement increased the gold recovery by about 2-fold and that of silver by about 1.3-fold. In this work, more than 95% of the gold and more than 98% of the silver could be recovered from the sulfidic gold ore when bioleaching was used ahead of cyanidation, compared with 18.3% and 52.3% by direct cyanidation.

An efficient state-of-the-art dynamic model to simulate and predict the rate of water production in longwall coal mining operations was developed as a tool for mine planning purposes. The model can also provide an estimate of any potential resultant hydrogeological impacts of an operation via an array of element-specific single-valued parameters referred to as the field rating indices. The computational procedure was designed to fully exploit the benefits of hydrogeotechnology and utilize a combination of conceptual, physical, empirical, and numerical approaches to define, characterize, analyze, and evaluate flow con- trolling properties of fractured rock systems. The model presented here provides a dynamic prediction method for highly fractured flow; a practical tool in mine and water control planning; and a cost-effective means of assessing, based on the best available technology, the impacts of mining on the water resources within a mining environment to satisfy local and federal regulatory requirements. Unique features include consideration of laminar and non-darcian flow domains in double-porosity-pressure hydrogeological media.

The selective flotation of semi-soluble salts with fatty acids is often negatively affected by the interaction of the potential determining cation with the ionic surfactant in bulk solution. This problem can be avoided by floating at low pH which involves the emulsification of the collector. The research presented here focuses on the influence of the Ca2+ ion on the flotation of fluorite with palmitic acid at low pH. Our results show that the surfaces of collector emulsions are dominated by precipitation phenomena similar to those encountered in bulk. In turn, fluorite in palmitic solution at intermediate pH displays surface properties similar to those of the collector by itself. This may be due to two alternative mechanisms (i) adsorption of bulk precipitate on the fluorite surface or (ii) the formation of a bilayer of surfactant ions on fluorite. Possibly, both mechanisms occur simultaneously.

The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, has developed a data acquisition system to continuously monitor radon, working level, absolute pressure, temperature, relative humidity, and air velocity. Data have been taken in intake and exhaust drifts, working stopes, and sealed-off areas of positive and negative ventilated uranium mines. Radon emanation rates, ranging from 1.7- to 12.2 x 2 10-l4 Ci/cm /sec were determined in four mines. The ratios of short duration, primary fan shutdown time to radon normalization time were 1 to 2 and 1 to 4, respectively, for-negatively and positively ventilated mines. Blasting and slushing caused radon increases of 160 and 67 percent, respectively.

The western coast of South Africa hosts a significant diamond resource within gravels associated with paleo-shorelines, channels and transgressive lag deposits. Diamonds were transported from the Kaapvaal Craton to the coast largely during the late Cretaceous via the paleo-Orange river systems. On shore and near shore environments are underlain by Proterozoic metamorphic and granitic rocks which provide gully and pot hole-type traps associated with paleo-channels, basins, bays and beaches. Inner and mid-shelf environments are covered by diamondiferous, poorly lithified upper Cretaceous and Tertiary sediments. The upper Cretaceous gravels were reworked along the sediment-starved coast during much of the Tertiary. Reworking was mainly achieved during marine flooding events which produced lag gravels along the paleo-shorelines. This process reworked the diamonds from low-grade Cretaceous gravels and concentrated them in higher-grade Tertiary gravels.

Investigations of fine grinding of bituminous coal in a laboratory-scale pulverizer are described. The results indicate essentially "normal" breakage behavior at relatively coarse sizes (greater than about 20 µm) but show clear evidence for re-agglomeration in the fine size range (less than about 10 µm). A simplified population balance model for simultaneous growth and breakage has been formulated. Breakage rates and breakage distributions are assumed to follow the patterns typically observed in simple grinding systems. It is recognized, however, that solid particles and agglomerates may exhibit different breakage behavior. Agglomeration rates are assumed to be determined by contact probability, i.e. by the relative numbers of interacting particles. Based on comparisons of model simulations and experimental data, it appears that agglomerate re-breakage rates and fragment size distributions are quite different from those for solid particles. The result is that product size passes through a minimum and then increases with time as agglomeration begins to dominate.

Ilmenite-rich lunar deposits can be converted to liquid oxygen to support lunar base operations and space transportation propulsion needs by a Carbotek-developed process. Iron oxide in ilmenite is reduced at elevated temperatures by hydrogen in a fluidized-bed reactor to water vapor which is electrolyzed to product oxygen and recycle hydrogen. Reaction rate, thermodynamic equilibrium, and lunar-gravity fluidization behavior are key factors which have been considered. Fluid-solids behavior has been modeled from data taken at lunar gravity conditions aboard NASA KC-135 flights. Large-scale pilot plant operations are planned to complete the development.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a study to assess the impact of a directional water spray system on a unique single inlet dust scrubber on a low profile mining machine. Tests were conducted in a full scale model mine using a Joy 12 CM 10-AA continuous mining machine. Tracer gas was introduced at the face and concentrations of the tracer gas were monitored at the face and in the return. Various parameters included: mining position, depth of cut, brattice setback and combinations of scrubber, directional sprays or symmetrical sprays. Results indicated that either directional or symmetrical water spray configuration improved the ventilation effectiveness of the scrubber by a factor of 2 to 3. Average face ventilation effectiveness (FVE) values for all testing of the scrubber and directional sprays were 0.95, versus 0.37 for a standard 6 m (20-ft) blowing curtain without sprays. No FVE values were less than the standard 6 m (20-ft) blowing results.

In order to comply with time limitations imposed by this symposium, a very narrow but nonetheless interesting segment of the market has been chosen for discussion of the preparation of a tailor-made product to meet a specific need, and in view of the fact that the barite market is one of the oldest and one of the broadest non-metallic mineral markets in the world, it is necessary that we place this in perspective. Of a recent world annual production; (i.e., 1966 figures released last year in MINERALS YEARBOOK), of some four million tons, the United States consumed over 1/2 million tons, of which approximately 950,000 tons were produced domestically and approximately 700,000 tons were imported. Of this total, something approaching 90% was used for drilling-mud weighting, and of the balance, all but about 60,000 tone is consumed in the production of glass, barium chemicals, aggregates, and other minor uses; thus we are really taking a look at a very minute, however important, and very selective, portion of the total barite-market. The real meat of this paper, after eliminating all irrelevant uses of barite, and delineating the area of discussion, resolves itself into the approach to a favorable marketing area and a specific attack on that area. Cost, to the user, has been, patently, a function of distance, as the basic price of barite has varied very little over the years until recently, and freight rates have been the governing factor. Conversely, the seller of barytes must make concession in the plant price to compensate for distance, if he is to successfully compete.

INTRODUCTION Previous papers by this author have discussed some of the difficulties involved with optimizing the performance of industrial flotation circuits, e.g. Klimpel (1988, 1989). The two major problems seem to be: 1) the inherent "systems" nature of the froth flotation process which leads to a great deal of self-compensation among the various operating options available and 2) the inherent variations in mineralogy, water chemistry, etc. that always seem to be present in industrial operations. In particular, the influence of reagent dosage has been emphasized in the above referenced work including an industrial system interaction denoted as the R/K trade-off, Klimpel (1984, 1987). Using a simple two parameter model for fitting time - recovery data, Klimpel (1980): [ ] where r is cumulative recovery at time t or at the t th cell, R is the long-term equilibrium recovery and K is the first-order rate of mass removal from the cell (time ), the definition of the R/K trade-off with increasing reagent dosage can be given as follows: at low dosages both R and K increase, at intermediate dosages R continues to increase but K starts to level out, and at high dosages, R may flatten out or still continue to increase but K starts to decrease, sometimes rather quickly. An illustration of this effect in a batch laboratory flotation cell is given in Figure 1. The purpose of this paper is to give a detailed plant illustration of this R/K trade-off phenomena with changing collector dosage which shows just how highly interactive the grindinglflotation system in sulfide mineral processing really is. This is one of about 20 plant level case studies that are being presented and evaluated in an upcoming book, Klimpel (1990). The particular study given here was completed in late 1979 on a copper ore of head grade 0.93% Cu. The frother being used was Dowfroth* 250 at a constant dosage of 0.15 g for each ton of solids feed to the rougher bank and the slurry pH was 10.2. The motivation of the study was to better understand the relationship of changes in feed rate (hence in particle size and state of liberation) with variations in collector dosage (potassium amyl xanthate). The major concern was to determine how much extra economic benefit could be gained by better utilizing the existing grinding mills and rougher bank consisting of eight identical cells. The remainder of the flotation circuit was also studied, including regrinding of rougher tails, but did not prove as critical as the rougher bank operation itself. It appeared from an overall economic viewpoint, the battle was being won or lost in the manner in which the rougher bank was being operated. This was not to minimize the roles of the scavenging and cleaning circuits but those portions of this particular circuit could be rather obviously operated to achieve maximum benefit given the specific output of the rougher bank. A special attempt was made to maintain constant ore type throughout the entire test program. Eight specific test conditions were evaluated including three different feed rates (and hence three different size distributions) to flotation. Tables 1 and 2 summarize the eight test conditions and overall recovery results at the end of the rougher bank for each test. A single test consisted of at least three consecutive eight-hour shifts operating at steady-state with composite cell lip samples taken over the final eight-hour shift. The La Perla Mine, owned by Altos Hornos de Mexico, S.A., is located approximately 100 miles east of the City of Chihuahua in the State of Chihuahua, Mexico. The mine began operations in 1958. Existing ore beneficiating facilities, consisting of heavy media and jig plants, upgrade the ore prior to shipment by rail to the Altos Hornos steelmaking complex in Monclova. Sizable reserves of two distinct ore types, which were not amenable to treatment in the existing beneficiating plant, or usable in the blast furnaces, have been mined and stockpiled in order to uncover the treatable ores. One of these ore types has been labeled "Diseminado" ore, and is low grade containing approximately 42% Fe with sulphurs ranging from 1 to 2%. The other ore type has been labeled "Pulverulento" ore, and is high grade containing approximately 65% Fe and 0.1% S, but at 80% minus 325 mesh, is too fine grained for efficient sintering. Late in 1968, Arthur G. McKee & Company became involved with the problem of improving the above ores for their efficient and economical use in Altos Hornos' blast furnaces. Early in 1969 representative samples of Diseminado ore were obtained for laboratory bench-scale testing at the University of Minnesota, Mineral Resources Research Center. Concentration tests incorporating magnetic roasting, wet magnetic separation, high intensity separation, high tension magnetic separation, anionic flotation of apatite, cationic flotation of silica and oleic acid flotation of iron were performed. Laboratory testing was concurrently carried on at La Perla Laboratory, which resulted in plans to construct a 10 TPD pilot plant. The pilot plant was operational in September, 1969. Analyzing laboratory results as well as pilot plant results, Altos Hornos and Arthur G. McKee & Company metallurgists agreed that the most promising flowsheet for the low grade Diseminado ores entailed wet magnetic cobbing, desliming, and oleic acid flotation of the non-magnetic fraction.
