What is the most practical method for storing a huge quantity of crude oil for a long period of time to assure availability if conditions curtail the source of supply? Underground storage is a logical answer. But can abandoned mines be used for this purpose? That is the proposal Fenix & Scisson International, Inc. submitted to the S.F.F. Association (acting in behalf of the Department of Industries of the Republic of South Africa), Johannesburg, South Africa, in October 1966. This engineering and contracting firm with headquarters in Tulsa, Oklahoma, specializes in underground storage; and based upon previous experiences their engineers were reasonably certain that a mine could be used for storing crude oil. The answer subsequently proved to be "yes." The result was con- version of a coal mine to provide storage for a quantity of crude oil which is the equivalent of a sizeable oil field. The total cost of purchasing, testing, and converting the mine was less than 15 percent of the cost of conventional steel tanks. Operating and maintenance costs are proving to be about 2 percent of those experienced at two large tank farms owned and operated by the Association.

Brockway Glass Company, Inc., manufactures glass containers at fourteen plants located in nine states. The relatively high place value of the major glass batch components dictates that raw material supplies be obtained from numerous sources in the United States and Canada. One objective of our central composition control program is to arrive at a glass composition with similar physical properties at each of our plant locations. This requires that adjustments be made in the batch compositions to compensate for chemical variations from one raw material source to another. Minor chemical variations will occur in sand, limestone, and dolomite from one source to another. Major variations are present in the alumina sources because of the diverse rock types utilized.

With today's high energy costs per million BTU's, far greater emphasis is placed on increasing thermodynamic efficiency in the use of energy. America has long since discarded its previous golden age of "low cost energy" in the past ten years. Energy costs are now a very significant percentage of operating expense in industrial operations. Public utilities have felt the same influences of increasing costs in energy for the generation of electricity. Not only has the input energy expense increased seriously, but as pointed out by Blackmore in a paper, fuel costs were 53.4% of the total operating costs for American Electric Power Company.

The Devonian salt basin, which contains the Saskatchewan Potash deposits, extends from just east of the foothills in Alberta, north as far as the Peace River area, across Saskatchewan and into Manitoba as far east as Range 10 west of the First Meridian and south into Montana and North Dakota. The basin is closed everywhere except to the northwest. The known potash deposits are confined almost entirely to the Province of Saskatchewan, with the exception of a small area in western Manitoba bordering the Saskatchewan boundary. The following discussion will concern only the Saskatchewan part of the basin. The evaporite series in the basin is defined as the Prairie Evaporite Formation of the Elk Point Group, of Middle Devonian age. Recent work done by potassium-argon dating methods has indicated an Upper Middle Devonian (Givetian) age of from 265 to 347 million years for the potash. The Elk Point Group consists in ascending order of the Ashern, Winnipegosis and Prairie Evaporite Formations. The Ashern formation, sometimes called the Third Red Bed, consists of dolomitic shales or shaly dolomites. The Winnipegosis is a reef type dolomite, usually with good porosity, and in many cases oil-staining, although to date no production has been obtained. The Prairie Evaporite formation consists of anhydrite overlain by halite and finally, in Saskatchewan, by the potash beds. In almost all wells which have been cored for potash the lowest potash bed is underlain by one or two bands of anhydrtte, which are used as marker horizons. Cores from a few wells which cored to the bottom of the salt series have shown flecks of potash throughout the halite.

The Homer-Wauseca Mine is operated by the Hanna Mining Company, three miles north of Iron River, Michigan on the Menominee Iron Range. The mine produces 5,300 tons of direct shipping iron ore daily. The present main producing level is at a depth of 1,500 feet below the collar. The ore body continues to a depth of 2,700 feet below the collar, to which depth the modern circular concrete shaft has been completed. A view of the property is shown in Figure #1. This paper is a report on the development of large underground boreholes used initially to conduct stope filling material into inaccessible, mined-out stopes. Later holes were drilled for ventilation raises, for mine drainage, for passageway for power cable, also for the primary breaking point for long hole stoping. Some, which were drilled as ventilation raises, were later stripped to a suitable size for a manway or ladder road. The holes varied in size from 6" to 30" with the present popular, economical working size being 16 1/4", used as a stope fill passage in mined out areas and for ventilation in deeper development. Foremost has been the desire to develop equipment suitable for drilling raises large enough for manways.

Windborne dust from alkaline salt flats and mining-related tailings ponds is especially prone to threaten applicable ambient air quality standards. Sodium carbonate crystals, typically present, weather to an exceedingly fine, non-cohesive dust, causing air quality problems for miles downwind. Recently developed specialized polymers react with alkaline dust to form sturdy, wind-resistant crusts with good longevity. An on-going demonstration project at a major trona facility has developed techniques for cost-effective application of these polymers over large areas of soft tailings or sediments in a wide variety of situations. Recently treated areas on the order of 80 acres show effective suppression of dust.

In order to clearly understand our process control system it is necessary to briefly discuss the various process control systems that were considered and why we chose our particular configuration. We considered Analog Systems, Computer Supervisory Systems, Computer Setpoint Systems, Direct Digital Systems and Direct Digital with Backup Systems. Our concept of these systems is illustrated in Figure 1 through Figure 5. We chose Direct Digital Control with Manual Backup because it had the greatest flexibility, ease of implementation and cost no more than a pure Analog Control System for one control concept. There would be no increase for a Direct Digital Control with Manual Backup System if the control concept were changed, while there could be considerable additional cost with an Analog System, if the control concept were changed.

CARBAD is a recently developed Australian process for the recovery of gold and platinum group metals (PGM). The process relies on the selective agglomeration phenomena of the gold and PGM to capture the mineral in a carbon-hydrocarbon media. The precious minerals are then extracted from the loaded media by a solvent gold room process producing a relatively pure concentrate. The media is then reformed and recycled. The process development from batch test work to a 5 t/h commercial scale CARBAD plant is discussed. The operation and results of processing a variety of ore types at several alluvial and hardrock gold mines is examined. The operating and capital costs for the CARBAD process shows that it is significantly less than that the conventional CIP/CIL. The environmental safety of the process is a major feature where precious metal deposits are located within urban environments or within wilderness areas.

The Palabora Mining Company Ltd. is probably best known for its production of copper since 1965. The success of the PMC mine lies in the outstanding technical and highly organized efficiencies applied to the massive mining, transportation, and treatment operations necessary to produce profitable copper. We are not however going to discuss the well-known copper operation but the extremely successful recovery and marketing of Baddeleyite by the PMC group. Let us first review the extraction process at the Heavy Minerals Plant. Non-magnetic ground ore from the copper magnetic separators is processed in the Heavy Minerals Plant for the extraction of the "heavy minerals" uranium and zirconia (Baddeleyite). Thorium is also present as a potentially recoverable mineral. The content of the minerals in the feed is probably the lowest in the world to be treated commercially. Minerals are separated from the waste ore by a gravity separation process in which the high density minerals segregate preferentially in a waterborne system.

Comminution of various materials can be achieved in grinding equipment by nipping, impact, attrition, or a combination of these actions. Pna mills also known as edgerunners, chasers, and mullers-are classified as a nipping machine. The essential features of this type of grinding machine are rollers or mullers that turn on a horizontal axis while rating on the bed of material in the pan. Ploughs are used to direct the unground material to the center of the pan. Grinding may be accomplished wet or dry. Aritres, Chilean mills, and Huntington mills are types of pan mills. Ring roll and ring Ml mills, another type of nipping machine, were developed for grinding smaller particles of intermediate hardness to product sizes of about 100 pm. They were designed to attempt to reduce the cost of similar size reduction in ball mills and have been widely used to pulverize coal for power-plant facilities. Impact Machines Grinding machines that can be classified as impact mills include: hammer, cage, centrifugal, vibratory, pin, and stamp mills. The distinctive feature of an impact mill is that it has a fast-moving part that transfers some of its kinetic energy to the material particles by direct contact so that internal stresses are created in the particles. The Reitz Disintegrator is an example of an impact mill. It has rigidly mounted hammers attached to a vertical shaft that rotates in close proximity to horizontally mounted screens. At Tahawus, New York, National Lead Company operates the MacIntyre Development, This operation produces 10,600 long tons of ore per day for crushing, 8,000 tons for grinding and processing, of which 2,000 tons per day reports as tailing for disposal in an impounded tailing storage area. With the change in location of mining operations at the mine of National Lead Company, a change in the area for tailing disposal by gravity became necessary, This called for the diversion of tailing from near the proposed mining area to areas more favorable for long term storage by gravity. In order to avail the operation of maximum storage for the future, a uniform minimum grade launder was proposed with a minimum velocity and maximum outfall at the discharge. Disposal of the gravity and flotation tailing was formerly accomplished in open ditch from the concentrator at a grade of 1.5 percent. It was desirable to design the new launder at grades less than this for the greater storage elevation.

The world's largest fluidized bed steam generator located at Rivesville, West Virginia is currently undergoing initial operation. This unit is designed to generate 3708 kg/s (300,000 Ib/hr) equivalent to 30 MWe of superheated steam while firing coal in a fluidized bed of limestone. Coal was first fired in this unit in December, 1976 and start up operation is progressing.

The capital investment to build a new metallurgical facility or open a new property has traditionally attracted substantial investigation, analysis and management attention. The areas of mineral exploitation, financial feasibility, engineering and construction have been studied extensively and their management, although still difficult, have become refined disciplines.

The Apex property, mined in the early Twentieth Century for direct shipping copper, also contains gallium and germanium in iron oxide minerals. In 1982, Musto Explorations Limited began an exploration program to define reserves. A metallurgical process was developed, and a production decision was reached in late 1983. This text describes the process development and design. The Apex mine, located near St. George in Southwestern Utah is owned by St. George Mining Corporation, a subsidiary of Musto Explorations of Vancouver, B.C. Musto acquired the property in early 1982. A pilot plant was operated by Hazen Research, Inc., Golden, CO later in 1982. In late 1983 sufficient information had been developed for St. George to proceed with the project. The final process design was prepared by G. M. Swinkels of Vancouver, consultant to Musto, and Hazen Research. Process engineering was done by Hazen Research, and St. George acted as its own contractor. Commissioning of the plant began in October 1985.

An integrated steel company is an industrial complex ranging from raw materials mining, through pyrometallurgical smelting and refining, and hot shaping, to product finishing and coating. Within this complex is a great variety of operations which use vast quantities of water, and a variety of water uses which can result in pollution of many different types. The industry has recognized most of its problems for some time, and has spent a great deal of money and effort in reducing and eliminating pollution. A recent survey by AISI showed that the industry has spent, within the last 15 years, two hundred forty millions of dollars on water pollution control, and has authorized spending eighty-seven millions more on this type of non¬productive facilities. While much still remains to be done, I think the record to date is one we can be proud of. In this presentation, we will attempt to outline a number of the water pollution problems encountered in an integrated steel company and to show what types of corrective action have been and are being taken, using Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation as an example.

Although the fundamental principles of hindered bed classifiers are relatively simple, the complex interactions between the operating parameters provide a degree of difficulty that hinders the ability for on-line plant optimization. Thus, a dynamic population balance model was developed for determining the hindered settling velocity of particles varying in density and size. The steady-state results of the model include partition curves as a function of particle size and density as well as metallurgical data. A statistical comparison of the simulation results with those obtained from industrial units reveal a high level of accuracy with adjusted R2 values greater than 0.95.

Fundamental to the use of rotary bit drilling equipment for oil and gas drilling is the requirement to maintain a cooling and lubricating environment for the bit and a means of conveying the cuttings from the drilling operation to the surface. The vast majority of such functions are provided for by the use of water based drilling fluids, commonly known as the drilling mud. One of the basic constituents of drilling mud is bentonite, a montmorillonite clay. With the construction management team established and a full funding agreement secured the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) now has the manpower and the financial resources to continue Metrorail construction into the 1990's. This paper describes WMATA's new role as construction manager after the transition from Bechtel Associates and gaining the full funding agreement with the Urban Mass Transit Administration (UMTA) and regional governments to complete 84.7 Metrorail miles (136km). The authors review the most recent station and line tunneling projects. WMATA's contractors have employed the state of the art soft ground and hard rock tunneling equipment and methods - an earth pressure balance TBM, a closed face TBM, and the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM). In final, the paper previews future underground work to be let under the funding agreement.

Two key components make up the core of a rapid excavation operation. They are: the breaking up of the rock and its removal. Owing to the complexity inherent in mechanical rock-breaking and the relative infancy of the art, for a number of years the first of these two components has received virtually undivided attention from the industry. Only recently has some concern been expressed about the technology and the economics of the much ignored second component: muck removal. As the continuous boring machine's percentage downtime continues to trend lower in the future, the need for adequate and more effective materials handling systems in rapid excavation will become increasingly more acute. (1) Recognition of the need for a broader and more far-sighted approach to our problem has been eloquently underscored in the conclusions of the Committee on Rapid Excavation sponsored by the National Research Council: "Ultimate attainment of the desired cost and speed improvements is significantly dependent on recognition of the excavation process as a system whose subsystems are critically inter-related. Substantial amounts of full-scale field testing of integrated driving, muck removal, and support subsystems are required." (2)

Modern ash handling systems exist in considerable numbers and a great deal of design and operating experience has been accumulated, It is the endeavor of this paper to point to a number of frequently recurring problems, A general appreciation of these problems will be helpful in both design and operation of systems. The light fly ash and the heavy bottom ash present different problems, and each will therefore be treated separately. Fly ash is collected in the ducting from the furnace to the stack and beneath the mechanical and electrostatic dust collectors. The greatest amount of dust is collected beneath the mechanicals and electrostatics. Hoppers are generally provided as integral parts of the collector. Suitable valves and piping are connected to these hoppers for removal of the dust. The size and shape of these hoppers are important factors in determining frequency of handling and the capacity of the system.
