INTRODUCTION The prediction of the engineering behavior of a rock mass depends upon the systematic analyses of the results of an exploration program, and upon the recognition of the significant rock properties in the early stages of excavation. The variations in rock properties in different geologic terrains and the state of the geotechnical art preclude complete success in the former case, and we therefore must rely heavily on the experience gained in the latter phase. The geotechnical information obtained from these two phases is only of value to the design engineer when applied to the rock behavior during excavation and subsequent plant operation. Pertinent questions which must be answered include: how does the joint orientation and frequency effect tunnel support and overall cavern stability; how does the depth of surficial soil or weathering effect foundations or slope stability for portal cuts; are there permeable zones within the rock mass that could lead to leakage problems around penstocks and is the material in these zones soluble or likely to pipe in the long term; and does the proposed engineering structure fit the terrain, or will it inevitably lead to problems requiring extensive remedial treatment. Bond International Gold's Colosseum gold mine was discovered in 1865. No recorded production occurred, however, until the 1930s, with production of about 19 kg (615 oz) of gold. The mine was closed in 1942 as a nonessential industry during World War II. The property was acquired by Dallhold Resources in mid-1986. Construction of a 1.1-million Mt (1.2-million st), carbon-in-pulp (CIP), cyanide mill began in November 1986 and was completed in September 1987. Minable reserves are estimated to be 9.5 Mt (10.5 million st), with an average grade of 2.1 g/t (0.061 oz per st). This article describes the general process flow and plant equipment. And it looks at the maintenance and operational problems encountered in the first six months of operation. Process description Ore is direct hauled from the open-pit mine 1.5 km (1 mile) to the crushing facility. There it is crushed to -152 mm (-6 in.) with a single- stage, 1.5-m x 1.2-m (60-in. x 48-in.), 186.5-kW (250-hp), Fuller-Traylor jaw crusher. The ore is then stockpiled in a 31.7-kt (35,000-st) reclaim ore pile. Lime is added to the crushed product as it is conveyed to a single 6.4-m x 4-m (21-ft x 13-ft), Hardinge semiautogenous grinding (SAG) mill, followed by a single 4.3-m x 7.3-m (14-ft x 24-ft) Hardinge overflow ball mill. After grinding, the slurry is thickened and then preaereated for three hours. Following preaereation, the pulp is leached with NaCN at a pH of 11, also for three hours. The slurry then goes through a seven-stage CIP circuit for 21 hours. Then the tailings slurry is preaereated for three hours before cyanide destruction using the Inco process. Loaded carbon is eluted using an Anglo American strip, followed by electrowinning on stainless steel wire. The stainless steel wire is transferred to refinery cells where the gold and silver is plated on stainless steel plates. Following electrore-fining, the gold-silver foil is removed, melted, and poured into dore bars for shipment. The crushing, milling, refining, and maintenance processes require 37 people. Crushing The crushing area required changes and modifications following start-up. Several areas are of specific note. Structural failures Rubber support cushion blocks located under the coarse ore bin failed. These were replaced with heavier, more durable blocks and have since appeared to be satisfactory. A severe structural vibration was encountered in the entire crushing facility. A mechanical engineer, brought in by the contractor, determined the structure needed more support and cross-bracing.

This paper appraises the energy requirements for mineral production through an exergy approach taking into account the long-term decline in ore grades. In this context, the exergy required for restoring resources from the dispersed state of the so called Crepuscular Earth into the physical and chemical conditions in which it was delivered by the ecosystems in light of the available technology, is known as exergy cost. The exergy cost is the point of reference in order to evaluate in a single variable, characteristics such as composition, concentration (ore grade) and the state of technology. The ratio between the exergy cost and the minimum thermodynamic cost required to accomplish the same process is called unit exergy cost and provides a measure of the irreversibility of the analyzed processes. Otherwise, the ore grade is one of the main issues which affects directly the costs associated with mining the ore. Hence, the unit exergy costs to produce minerals from progressively lower ores grades by the current technology is analyzed. The unit exergy cost curves are presented for some important minerals such as aluminium, chromium, cobalt, copper, gold, lead, manganese, nickel and zinc, in order to know the trend when the ore grade decreases.

"He?s an SOB, but he's my SOB." Many of us have heard this line in reference to attorneys, and can appreciate the humor. However, the thought reflects a deeper attitude that lawyers should be used for attack purposes in the legal system or the regulatory process. Often, more permitting progress can be made with tact and flexibility than with inflexible, overly aggressive strategies. Usually, administrative hearings or other litigation work to the disadvantage of the applicant. Thus, I have concerns about approaching any permitting system with a hard-line attitude. On the other hand, the project team must always be prepared to defend permit applications and present a legally adequate case at public meetings, administrative hearings, or judicial proceedings. This paper discusses a number of strategies intended to increase the probabilities for successful permitting, whether opposition is informal or highly organized.

A performance study of oxygen self-rescuers of varying durations from the United States and other countries was undertaken as an assessment of present worldwide technology. The apparatus were tested on a Breathing and Metabolic Simulator in the Life Support laboratories of the Bureau's Pitts- burgh Research Center. Parameters monitored during the testing were inhaled levels of C02, 02, inhaled gas temperature, and breathing resistance. The metabolic demand placed on the apparatus represented the average demand of the 50th percentile miner performing a 60-min man-test 4, as described in 30 CFR 11H. Results presented include apparatus service life and subjective comments as well as averages and peaks of monitored parameters.

Thunder Basin Coal Company has two mines located in the southern portion of the Powder River Basin. 60-90 km southeast of Gillette, Wyoming. The mines are principally located on federal coal leases acquired in the late-1960's. Development plans for the Black Thunder Mine focused on dragline stripping, but environmental considerations during the mid-1970's made truck-shovel stripping the method of choice when the mine opened in 1976. In 1981, the Coal Creek Mine opened as the first dragline mine in the Gillette area of the Powder River Basin. The regional terrain is flat-lying with occasional clinker-capped hills. The mines are located on the Wasatch and Fort Union Formation contact. The coals are Paleocene in age and the deposits are structurally simple, dipping gently to the west. The seams are thick and are classified as sub-bituminous-C. The Black Thunder Mine, with its 21 m thick seam, is strategically located in the center of the highest heat value mining area of the southern Powder River Basin.

Normally I would like to begin a talk on photogrammetry by defining the word. However modern technology has changed the science so radically that it bears little resemblance to its original definition. Photogrammetry as defined is a science of taking accurate measurements from photography. Today's photogrammetrist, in addition to working with photography, finds himself working with magnetometers, infrared scanners, radiometers, holo¬graphy, lasers, side-looking radar, digital interfaces, computers and countless other modern space age concepts. The modern photogrammetrist is a pilot, photographer, lab technician, mathematician, geologist, programmer, engineer, physicist, and cartographer. His modern instrumentation and many spheres of activity all have a role in the environmental sciences. For example, the magne¬tometer which measures the earth's magnetic fields is used to locate the earth's ore deposits. The infrared scanner captures the heat emitted from the earth to detect ground waters and thermal pollutions. To elaborate on each of his many endeavors would take volumes rather than this short paper. I have elected therefore to discuss what I feel is his most important role in the environmental sciences - that of cartographer.

Economical and environmental pressures necessitates the recovery of the minus 0.6 mm x 0 coal generated by todays mining machines. This size fraction, dependent on the type of production unit, maintenance of the production unit, and the Hardgrove Grindability Index, can be a substantial portion of the Preparation Plant feed. Historically, dewatering of the collected 0.6 mm x 0 product has often been rather expensive and marginal with respect to surface moisture reduction. The Freeman United Crown II Preparation Plant more than adequately demonstrates that the continuous scroll type centrifuge can dewater 0.6 mm x 0 coal to acceptable surface moisture levels.

As with the slogans of Madison Avenue, catch words or phrases frequently become topical. Much is heard these days of the confrontation between governments of developing countries and international mining capital. In actual fact, sadly there are too few cases of anything as positive as confrontation because such an action at least signifies a dialogue which may begin badly but end up fruitfully. Instead we have in general a climate of indifference and fear with the mining companies of note marking off most of the developing world as being unsafe for investment. There is an unreal air to this damaging impasse. The common sense and objectivity which are prerequisites of positive action are lost in a swirling cloud of mythology, embraced largely by governments. Let us examine some of the dangerous misconceptions.

INTRODUCTION For many years mining at the Stobie mine of the Inco Metals Co. consisted mainly of fill-type mining for higher grade ores and block caving or blasthole open stope mining for lower grade ores. Open stope mining, although quite favorable in the initial stoping phase, has always presented problems in the pillar recovery phase, especially at depth. In 1966, sublevel caving was introduced. This method is ideally suited for low-grade ore and can be applied very successfully to intermediate or higher grade ores providing proper controls are enforced. Sublevel caving has three distinct advantages: it is highly adaptable to mechanization; it recovers the ore in one operation; and it provides adequate ground sup¬port and safety regardless of mining depth. This method does, however, make extra demands, particularly for new types of supporting services. The constant presence of rock makes quality control of the grade of the ore being extracted essential. Increased de¬velopment, different types of ventilation, roadways, and maintenance are only a few of the many changes re¬quired. The care and maintenance of the fleets of diesel equipment and the modification of equipment is a con¬stant challenge. CHOICE OF SUBLEVEL CAVING The question arises, why mine by sublevel caving? Fig. 1 shows a typical problem encountered by the open stope or blasthole mining method. Near the surface there is little or no ground support problem. As mining progresses to an intermediate depth, however, ground failure starts to occur in the supporting pillars. If open mining is carried beyond this point, the critical depth is soon reached, accompanied by hanging wall caving, ex¬tensive pillar failure, and the danger of losing control of the mining cycle. The rock caved from the hanging wall mixes with and dilutes the ore being extracted from the blasthole stopes. Ore losses occur when pillar failure pre¬vents drilling and development of part of the ore. The interruption to the mining cycle causes serious curtail¬ment in production until ground failure is controlled and the mining method changed to adapt to the new conditions. Having recognized the limitations of open stope min¬ing, alternatives were sought. The first alternative (Fig. 2) was to fill the open stopes with sand fill be¬fore extensive pillar deterioration occurred, recover the pillar ore by fill mining, and then convert to total fill mining below. If the ore grade is high enough it can support the costly fill method. Recovery will be at a much slower rate and will therefore extend over a longer period of time. On the other hand, sublevel caving gives complete primary mining recovery in a short time and is very adaptable to mechanization, which is now a necessity to combat spiralling labor costs and give greater produc¬tivity per man. Sublevel caving is ideally suited as a mining method for low-grade ore bodies which eventually reach a criti¬cal depth for open stope mining. DEVELOPMENT The development phase comes first and of course its main purpose is to gain access to the ore and provide a route for ore removal from the mine. Initially a 20% inclined service ramp is driven in the footwall rock (Figs. 3, 4, and 5). It is preferable to start at the top of a mining block and drive the ramp down¬ grade so gravity can assist in mucking the blasted de¬velopment round, and also access can be gained more quickly to the initial production area. The ramp nor¬mally turns at 3.1 rad (180°) about every 152.4 m (500 ft) to keep it reasonably close to the rock disposal

Trackless vehicles, as the name implies, are machines not bound to rails, guide cables, or other direction controlling devices. They include, for the most part, vehicles which are wheel or crawler (track laying) mounted. Power sources may be self contained such as diesel or battery and can be defined as non-captive machines, while connected power sources such as compressed air or electric can be defined as captive machines. Trackless vehicles are used in all phases of underground excavation, loading, hauling and dumping. Early application found most machines with digging ability used to load those with payload hauling ability. As the versatility of trackless methods became more obvious the trackless vehicle has evolved to more productive machines such as the self loading haulers commonly referred to as Load-Haul-Dump equipment. Trackless vehicles find wide use in drifting and tunneling. Ability to negotiate adverse grades is especially noteworthy. Experience drawn from highly efficient room and pillar mining operations has lead to relatively wide application in drawpoint and cut and fill mining.

The structural setting of disseminated-replacement gold deposits of the Carlin-type and other aspects of their genesis are closely related to events which took place during the evolution of the Basin and Range province. The deposits formed as a result. of chemical and physical processes which took place at shallow depths in the roots of hot spring systems at moderate temperatures (about 200°C) and low pressures (about 25 bars) (Radtke and Dickson, 1974). Locations of Carlin-type gold deposits in the Basin and Range province are shown in Figure 1. Most of the block-faulted mountain ranges in the Great Basin formed by tectonic activity that happened since Miocene time, although faulting in some places probably began in Eocene to Oligocene time (Hamilton and Myers, 1966). The Carlin-type deposits are spatially related to Basin and Range-type faults: Many deposits, such as Getchell, Pinson, Preble, and Cortez, occur along the flanks of ranges, while other deposits, including Carlin (Radtke, 1974) occur within the ranges in areas characterized by crosscutting and intersecting high-angle or Basin and Range-type faults. The association of the ore deposits with Basin and Range-type faults is evidence that ore deposition is young, Miocene or later. The steep, high-angle faults played three roles: first, they provided deep channels for upward-flowing solutions; second, in preparing the rocks for fluid penetration by brecciation and general rock dislocation; and third, they moved sedimentary carbonate rocks, favorable for ore deposition, from deep levels to near-surface positions where the physico-chemical conditions were more suitable for the deposition of ore.

The Flat Gap Mine is on Copper Ridge in the Appalachian Valley of East Tennessee, Large zinc orebodies occupy zones of solution and collapse breccias in lower Ordovician Kingsport limestone and dolomite, The principal ore mineral is sphalerite and the principal gangue is dolomite, The orebearing horizons are considerably more than 95% covered by thick residual clay, and geochemical prospecting under these conditions is an effective exploration technique which played an important role in the discovery and exploration of the Flat Gap Mine, The residual nature of the over-burden at Flat Gap is emphasized, Background heavy metals (mainly zinc) range from 50 to 200 ppm, and the anomalies range to 3000 ppm and more, About 80% to 9W0 of the soil zinc is in relatively insoluble form in solid solution with the hydrous iron oxides and in the crystal lattice of the clay minerals. Quite discrete zones in the soil with sharply contrasting metal value boundaries mark vestiges of bedrock mineralization, and such anomalous soil areas are often contiguous with partially weathered ore. It has not been possible on the basis of chemical criteria to distinguish between an anomaly formed from non-commercial mineralization and one formed from ore.

Tabling is an old environmentally friendly separation unit operation. This paper models shaking tables and explores the action and design of riffles on shaking tables. By reassessing riffle shape and riffle patterns, significant improvements in tabling performance appear feasible. While table sales appear at their nadir, a high-tech environmentally friendly table may have a significant market in the coming decade. Riffles on a shaking table impact particle separation. Particles are affected by riffles and their exit position on the table is dramatically changed, Riffle shape determines how much the riffle will influence a given material. Moreover, riffle patterns influence the concentration of a given material and its exit points on a table. This effect of riffle placement and design is modeled in a spreadsheet. Major performance and separation improvements may he expected by improved table design. Two physical laws of tabling have been derived. These laws aid in the design of sophisticated high-tech tables.

Added value is a term loosely used in the industry, but what exactly does it mean? What does it take to make a value-added product and more importantly how does a company maintain the value added to its products? Most people agree that value-added means the value of a mineral minus the cost to produce it. But what is misleading is that producing value added products does not necessarily guarantee the profitability of the products. In some cases firms that make "value-added" products are not very profitable. It is not only important to understand how to make a value-added product but also how competitive forces in the market can erode the value added. Therefore, when we look at value-added opportunities, we must understand how to obtain the value added and more importantly how to maintain the value. There are four major factors that limit a company's ability to add value to its products. This paper will examine these factors and will use the ground calcium carbonate and mica industries as examples.

Many factors must be considered when performing engineering and construction work for a major minerals project. Dravo's Afton copper smelter in British Columbia illustrates some of the E&C factors considered when setting up this new operation. In March 1978, Afton Mines Ltd., a Tech Corp. subsidiary, began blister copper production at the world's first integrated copper ore mining, milling, and smelting operation to use Top Blow Rotary Converter (TBRC) process smelting technology. This key TBRC smelting element is licensed by INCO Ltd. to Dravo Corp. The TBRC process uses a single vessel of modular design. It rotates for mixing and provides complete processing capability, from concentrate through blister copper. The Afton facility is about 16 km west of Kamloops, a town in south-central British Columbia. To make its operation as economic as possible, Afton officials considered several options for the copper smelter, the first in modern times in the province. Inability to extract precious metals-primarily gold-from the concentrates ruled out hydro-metallurgical processes. The final choice was between a conventional electric furnace/ Peirce-Smith converter combination and the TBRC process. The TBRC process was chosen for its versatility in processing the various Afton concentrates and grades and its 40% lower capital cost compared to the electric furnace converter system. The TBRC smelter -including concentrate slurry receiving, drying, storage, smelting, off-gas cleaning, and copper casting-had an installed cost of about $25 million. In December 1974, a pilot program was conducted by Teck, Dravo, and INCO at INCO's Port Colborne, Ontario, research facility. The pilot program demonstrated the TBRC's ability to smelt, convert, and clean copper slags. After the successful pilot effort, Dravo performed additional research to find an effective fixation system for high grade, intermittent SO2 gases. Once the go-ahead was given, design and procurement for the Afton copper smelter was provided by the Denver Division, Dravo Engineers and Constructors. Commonwealth Construction, Vancouver, constructed all Afton facilities. Afton's single furnace smelter is designed to produce 25-kt/a blister copper in 363-408 kg cake form. The product is sold to England for electrolytic refining. The TBRC process is only one of several innovations proposed by Dravo and chosen by Afton to insure the most modern smelter in North America and meet all British Columbia's environmental restrictions. Conventional smelting methods use a separate furnace for each process step. The TBRC process employs but one furnace. The Afton TBRC vessel measures 6.4 m in length and 4.3 m in diameter. The furnace is supported on a set of motor-driven rollers. These permit the vessel to rotate at variable speeds to 40 rpm. Rotation provides good mixing, high reaction rates, and effective heat transfer from the refractory sides to the molten bath resulting in a low thermal gradient. The furnace can tilt through a full 360° for charging, firing, and pouring. Smelting at Afton is accomplished in sequential fashion. Flotation concentrate and limestone flux are initially charged to the hot, empty vessel. Using the water-cooled, oxy-fuel lance, the initial charge is smelted. Once sufficient molten bath is obtained and slagging completed, the metallic concentrate is charged. INTRODUCTION In most uranium mines the concentration of uranium in the ore is low enough that inhalation of dust does not present a radiological problem. Conversely in the mills there is a potential inhalation hazard from inhaled uranium in concentrated form, namely "yellowcake" and other compounds intermediate between the ore and the final product of the mill. It was generally assumed that the solubility of yellowcake placed it in the category of Class D materials. This plus the fact that the uranium is non-enriched led health physicists to assume that the potential health hazards were a result of the uranium's chemical properties rather than its radiological properties. Bioassay programs have thus been limited to routine urine sampling at a weekly or monthly frequency. In most cases when a high reading was obtained, subsequent sampling within one or two days showed a rapid return to low levels, therefore tending to confirm the class D nature of the material. Two developments over the last few years have however suggested that modifications to this simple bioassay program may be necessary and practical. Firstly, a number of studies on the solubility of uranium mill products, from ore to yellow cake, in simulated lung fluid (Eidson A.F., Mewhinney J.A., 1980) have shown that some of the material is not class D, but class W or even Y. This raised the possibility that, while the urine levels rapidly decreased, indicating rapid excretion of the class D component, the W and Y components remained in the lung. Thus an unsuspected lung burden could have been accumulated. The second development, the ready availability of [in vivo] counting facilities with which to make direct measurements of uranium lung burdens, offered a means of confirming the hypothesis of unsuspected lung burdens. A study was therefore initiated to correlate lung burdens with urinary excretion. METHOD A total of 79 subjects from 3 uranium mills participated in the study. They were brought to the Ottawa laboratories of the Radiation Protection Bureau in groups of 4 or 6, over a period of several months. In Ottawa, [in vivo] thorax measurements were performed, and a urine sample collected. Each subject also brought with him a urine sample that had been collected the previous day. All samples were split, for analysis by both R.P.B. and the mill laboratory. [Concentrations of Uranium Dust] Results obtained by mills A, B and C for concentrations of uranium in air at various locations are given in table 1. Samples taken at mill B were obtained using continuous sampling with a midget impinger over a six hour period. Samples taken at mills A and C were 5-minute gravimetric samples. [Subject Selection] The subjects were selected to represent a wide range of work history in terms of both length of employment and type and location of job, as shown in table 2.

A majority of the chemical process industry uses lime in either a powder or liquid form. Engineering and maintenance personnel often face a long and potentially expensive trial-and-error period in order to find the best process equipment to handle lime. Limestone is mined from a quarry in the form of calcium carbonate (CaCO3). Then, it is crushed and fed into a kiln at approximately 1,093° C (2,000° F), where the carbon dioxide is burned off (calcining) to make calcium oxide (CaO).

Complying with reduced dust standards (i.e., less than 2.0 mg/m3) due to quartz levels that exceed 5 percent is presently a critical problem for many continuous mining sections. Results are presented of research which was performed to determine the factors causing high levels of respirable quartz dust and to identify the major contributors to operator exposure. It was found that the significant sources of quartz dust are the drilling of the roof and the mining of the roof, floor and rock bands. Both the miner and the bolter may be on a reduced standard, but compliance is easiest to achieve on the bolter for which improvements in maintenance and operator practices are usually sufficient. At the miner, the problem is more elusive. Research continues to identify operating and mining practices that contribute to the exposure..

The Paupers Dream Property is located in the northern Boulder Mountains, southwestern Montana, 30 km southwest of Helena. The property is situated in the central portion of the Butte-Helena gold belt, a NE trending lineament marking a zone of recurrent, late-Cretaceous to mid-Tertiary volcanic activity. Geology consists of a plutonic basement of late-Cretaceous quartz monzonite overlain by a pre-volcanic basal conglomerate and a complex sequence of Oligocene rhyolitic volcanics. Gold mineralization occurs in fracture-controlled quartz veins, silicified stockwork, and brecciated shear zones as auriferous pyrite, arsenopyrite, and disseminated free gold. An estimated 60,000 tonnes averaging 2.5 g/t was produced from the Porphyry Dike, Venus, and Paupers Dream Mines on the property. Current drill indicated reserves (May, 19861 are placed at 6,946,000 tonnes averaging 1.45 g/t gold.
