Block caving is an efficient mass-production method for the underground mining of large orebodies. However, the block-caving method requires a substantial investment in developmental works, based on the assumption that the rock will cave. Efficient block caving is prevented if the rock forms stable arches or breaks into fragments that are too large to pass easily through the finger raises. Under these conditions, the cost of the additional labor, drilling, and blasting required to assist caving may be sufficient to make marginal orebodies uneconomic or alternative mining methods more attractive. Reliable methods for the prediction of the block-caving behavior of an orebody are clearly needed at the initial planning stage. These methods should be capable of considering both geological and engineering aspects of a block cave, as experience has shown that the manner in which a block cave is initiated and developed may be almost as important as the geological conditions such as the nature of the rock material, degree of alteration, characteristics of the joints and faults, etc. The initial state of stress in the rock mass should also be considered.

Maximizing production of oil from sandstone petroleum reservoirs is aided by use of non-damaging drilling and workover/completion fluids. Various tests, such as X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microsccpy, petrographic microscopy, porosity and permeability are conducted on core samples. Several fluids are selected, on the basis of these results, for return permeability tests. A report is then written giving the results of all tests, potential reservoir problems, and recommended practices for exploiting the reservoir.

Classical apparatus for granulometric separation generally have limited applications which are found either in the level of the size of separation or in that of the accuracy and the efficiency of the separation or in that of the rate of feed. In industrial practice, the classification of the products of coarse dimensions generally poses no problems. On the contrary, the separation of fine particles presents some difficulties, however the apparatus is used (mechanical classifiers, curved screens and sieves, hydrocyclones, etc...). These difficulties are due to hprfections of separation, rather high cost prices, and sometimes large amounts of recycled materials.

"INTRODUCTION Barrick Goldstrike underground mine is located in Northern Nevada on the Carlin trend. The underground mine produces approximately 1.5 to 1.8 million tons a year and approximately 400,000 ounces of gold a year. The mine is comprised of two main mining methods, underhand drift and fill and long hole stopeing. The mass blast project stated in 2012 as Value in Use project between Barrick, Southwest Energy and Orica, the goal of this project is to be able to blast an entire drilled stope in one blasting event instead of taking multiple blasts. This will improve productivity by eliminating intermediate blasts, reducing additional blast time, eliminate drill hole cleaning due to the previous blast. Project implantation started in the fourth quarter of 2013 and mass blasting has been common practice throughout all of 2014. STOPPING PRACTICE AT GOLDSTRIKE BEFORE MASS BLAST PROJECT The production from the Goldstrike mine is approximately 70% from stopes. The timely completion of all stoping blocks is imperative to maintaining the plan, delays in the execution of any particular block can have detrimental ripple down effects as neighbouring stoping blocks become delayed. Before the implementation of this project the standard practice for Goldstrike was to: 1. Drill the entire stope 2. Blast a bottom shot, normally between 10 feet and 20 feet off the bottom of the slot rings. This would be mucked out before the next shot 3. Blast a pull through shot, this included the raise and one or two production rings. Again mucking this out before the next shot 4. Blast production rings, one or two more blasts depending on stope size. In most cases between each of these blasts the holes in the other rings of the stope would have to be cleaned. This meant either cleaning manually using air and water, or mechanically cleaning with a bench drill. In many cases this resulted in delays in completing the stoping block."

The United States Bureau of Mines conducted research on high-intensity magnetic separation methods for upgrading tantalum concentrates from Alabama. Process flow sheets were studied to maximize tin removal and minimize tantalum loss. Using laboratory-scale equipment, concentrates were produced which contained over 65% combined Ta2O5-Nb2O5. Up to 78% of the tin was recovered as a byproduct, containing about 70% SnO2. Only 1 to 5% of the tantalum reported with the tin byproduct. The producer subsequently incorporated high-intensity magnetic separation into its process flow sheet to provide concentrates for the National Defense Stockpile.

Mineral policy in Canada has been in a state of transition and change over the past several years. 1976 has witnessed some settling of troubled waters and the pattern of the currents of change is becoming more clear. The provinces play a key role in this process and have provided much of the thrust for new initiatives. On the other hand, the federal government in Canada in recent years has taken a much more active interest in mineral affairs than previously and has asserted its powers on a number of key policy questions. Some of the initiatives from the two levels of government in Canada have come into conflict with each other and, thus, contributed materially to a state of affairs that includes change, uncertainty and conflict.

The question "what constituents should be determined?" is one that defies a simple answer, because earth scientist being what you are, the rock and mineral analyst will eventually be called upon to determine about three quarters of the elements in the periodic table. The concentrations of these analyses will range from as low as 1 ppb to 100% of the material being analyzed. The most important thing to remember about a quantitative analytical result is that it can only be an estimate of the concentration of the analyte present. A measure of the reliability of that estimate is given by statistically derived statements of the precision and accuracy of the measurement. When evaluating your data an understanding of precision and accuracy are of paramount importance. Precision is the measure of agreement between replicate values while the accuracy of a determination is the concordance between it and the true value. There is no quarantee, however, that a precise answer is an accurate one. The numerical difference between the two values is the error. When evaluating your data, the repeats analyzed with your samples will identify the precision and control standards of U.S.G.S. or Canadian Certified Materials quality will identify the accuracy. The main problem is this data is routinely withheld from the report, or was it ever included in the analysis of your samples?

INTRODUCTION The planned 166 kilometer (103 mile) Metro rapid rail transit system in Washington, D.C. is being designed and constructed by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority. At the present time, 112.6 kilometers (70 miles) of this system is in operation and contains 21 route-kilometers (13 miles) of rock tunneling, and 14.5 route-kilometers (9 miles) of soft ground tunneling. An additional 2.4 kilometers (1.5 miles) of single track tunnels in rock are planned and 6 additional contracts will consist of some 8 kilometers (5 miles) of twin tunnel, resulting in 16 additional linear kilometers (10 miles) of single track tunnel in soft ground. The Authority plans, upon its evaluation and the recommendation of the General Engineering Consultant, to include an alternative design incorporating the convergence confinement method of construction known as the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM), for Sections E-5, E-6e and E-8a of the E-Route. The Metro system is constructed in a variety of geological conditions and crosses the boundary of two major geographic provinces. The Gibralter Mines Ltd. complex is 61 km (38 miles) north of Williams Lake in central British Columbia, Fig. 1. The discovery of these deposits evolved in stages such that each stage revealed a bigger piece of the elephant. When the elephant was mostly revealed, Placer Development Ltd. brought the property into production. Although Gibralter is aporphyry copper deposit, it is certainly not a typical one. Copper and minor molybdenum mineralization occur in a foliated and saussuritized quartz diorite. Ore bodies tend to be tabular in form because foliation exerts a major control on localizing mineralization. A generalized geologic map of the Gibralter-Pollyanna area is shown in Fig. 2. Mineralization was first identified in 1917 in the Pollyanna area. Several shallow pits were sunk on flashy, but low grade, lenticular quartz veins. Duval Corp. made the initial commercial discovery, the Pollyanna ore body, on what were then called the Pollyanna claims. These claims, staked by R.C. Glen and C. Gennis in 1963, were the first to be optioned by Duval in British Columbia in October 1964. Placer Development joined Duval in late 1966 as a 50% joint venture partner, and after optioning the adjoining Gibralter claims, proceeded to evaluate and develop the four ore bodies that make up the Gibralter deposit. The Gibralter claims south of the Pollyanna claims provided the name for the Gibralter deposit.

In the November 1957 issue of "Chemical Process Engineering," a British publications, there appeared an article entitled "Correct Selection of Drying Equipment." The author wrote as follows "Whether batch drying or continuous drying' methods are applied, the basis of efficient drying is heat distribution, control of rate of heat input, and heat transference from heating medium to the particles of the material to be dried." The author continues: "Because the efficiency of direct dryers, such as hot air or hot gas dryers, increases with rising inlet temperature of the drying air or gas when exhaust temperature remains fixed, the highest practical drying temperature should be used. Exhaust air should leave the dryer at the lowest possible temperature, but as fully saturated with moisture as possible." It is certainly conceivable that the author of this article by outlining the basic requirements for efficient drying methods has unwittingly given the reasons why fluidized drying is rapidly being adopted for so many industrail applications, including the dryingof fine coal. An examination in greater detail of the individual basic requirements for efficient drying as outlined by the author is perhaps the most logical starting point.

The responses of calcite, feldspar, and quartz minerals In a laboratory free fall electrostatic separator, before and after tribocharging with stainless steel, PVC, and copper plates, have been investigated. The effect of H3BO3 and BaCl2 chemicals pre-treatment on the electrical properties of the minerals is examined. The changes in the electrical properties are discussed with the determined charge, dielectric constant, and electrical conductivity of the mineral samples. Electrical properties of the minerals and their responses to the electrical field during separation, after tribocharging and chemical pre-treatment, are explored for the need to characterize the electrical behaviour of the minerals.

"Titanium and titanium alloys are commonly selected for pressure oxidation autoclave vent piping and pressure control valve components, as well as autoclave internals and other process piping. In the autoclave vent application, titanium ignition risk is controlled by limiting oxygen concentration, and preventing high gas velocity gas impingement on surfaces. Oxygen concentration is dependent on the autoclave pressure and temperature operating conditions and therefore oxygen concentration and the associated titanium ignition risk is dependent on standard operating procedures, process control interlocks and permissive conditions. It is not uncommon for these standard controls to be deficient during atypical operating conditions, or for operations to deviate from the operating procedures, increasing the potential for a titanium ignition incident. Titanium ignition risk caused by elevated oxygen concentration in autoclave vent systems can be reduced with the introduction of an online autoclave overpressure calculation and the configuration of associated interlocks and permissive conditions. INTRODUCTION High temperature pressure oxidation (>190°C) is a well recognized and versatile metallurgical oxidative pre-treatment process commonly used to liberate gold from refractory sulphide ores and concentrates before conventional leaching with cyanide. Titanium and titanium alloys are highly corrosion resistant in pressure oxidation process conditions and are therefore commonly selected as materials of construction for many components including: autoclave internals, agitators, process piping, and components in autoclave vent systems. Operations that anticipate or have experienced aggressive corrosion in the vent system often have little choice in material selection other than the use of titanium (Krag & Henson, 1992). Titanium is not suitable for use with elevated oxygen concentrations and is considered a restricted material because of its high pyrophoricity and combustion propagation properties (Beeson, Smith, Stewart, 2007). Several serious incidents have occurred in which titanium materials have ignited in autoclave applications (Zawierucha, McIllroy, Million, 1995). In autoclave vent applications, titanium ignition risk is reduced by preventing elevated oxygen concentrations, maintaining low gas velocities, and minimizing the potential for gas impingement on surfaces. Oxygen concentration in the autoclave vapour phase and vent system is dependent on the autoclave operating pressure and temperature conditions and therefore titanium ignition prevention controls typically include process interlocks and operating procedures based on the selected nominal design operating conditions. However, it is not uncommon for these controls to be deficient or for operations to deviate from the nominal operating conditions over time, increasing the risk of titanium ignition. The introduction of an online calculation of autoclave overpressure and a maximum target autoclave pressure as well as associated process control interlocks and permissive conditions can alert the autoclave control room operator and prevent an elevated oxygen concentration from developing, and therefore reduce titanium ignition risk in autoclave vent systems."

A new method for determination of residual flotation oils on beneficiated kaolin clays has been developed. The method, which yields qualitative information, is based on fluorescence measurements employing a spatially resolved, polychromatic illumination source for excitation, and a two-dimensional detection scheme using a silicon-intensified, video imaging device. The method was used to identify residual oils on a beneficiated, Washington County, Georgia, crude clay. The results were compared to a similar qualitative analysis performed via capillary column gas chromatography using an FID detector. The video fluorometry was the preferred method of, analysis.

In April, the US Synthetic Fuels Corp. broke a three-year silence and made its first financial award by approving a $820,750 loan for the First Colony peat-to-methanol project in North Carolina (ME, May, page 403). Peat Methanol Associates (PMA), a partnership between Koppers Co., ETCO Methanol Inc., Transco, Peat Methanol Co., and l. B. Sunderland, broke ground at First Colony last year and plans to begin production in Dec. 1985. Although the award is only a small part of Synthetic Fuels Corp.'s $15-billion budget, it does signal the corporation's intention to move aggressively ahead. It also is a positive indication that First Colony will be completed and operated successfully. This article describes the methods and equipment that will be used to harvest peat at First Colony, as well as how the peat will be converted to methanol. Introduction Peat deposits found along North Carolina's coastal plain contain high-quality fuel-grade peat with an average heating value of more than 23.3 MJ/kg (10,000 Btu/lb) (dry), with a low sulfur and ash content. The deposits differ from other US peats in that they contain large, sound Atlantic White Cedar and Cypress logs, stumps, and roots that may extend throughout the full depth of the deposit. A second difference is that these deposits are much more highly decomposed and, in the raw state, have the appearance and feel of a heavy, reddish-brown grease. These factors make it impractical to use standard production equipment so a new line was developed. Also, because of these conditions, techniques were modified to facilitate production. First Colony Farms, located near Creswell, NC, developed and evaluated a milled peat program. Equipment for this production method was designed and built, production rates were established from field operations, drying rates were established, weather data were analyzed, and total operating and capital costs were estimated. The method depends on the sun and wind for drying peat to the desired moisture content, in this case around 40%. Therefore, field preparation is actually the construction of a large solar collector to dry the peat so it can be harvested and stockpiled. It is essential that this collector be properly profiled initially and maintained during production to prevent precipitation from ponding. Initial Field Preparation Initial field preparation includes cleaning existing canals and constructing ditches and water control structures for proper drainage of rainwater run-off, building adequate roads for site access, removing surface vegetation, and profiling and sloping the fields. At First Colony, the 60.7-km2 (15,000-acre) harvesting area was divided into 129.5-hm2 (320-acre) blocks about 1.6 km (1 mile) long and 805 m (0.5 mile) wide. This was accomplished by cleaning main outfall canals with adjacent roads built from canal spoil at 1.6-km (1-mile) intervals. Existing intermediate canals that feed into main outfall canals at 805-m (0.5-mile) intervals also are cleaned. Headland roads are constructed from canal spoil along each side of each intermediate canal. This 129.5-hm2 (320-acre) block is then divided into 32 harvest strips by small V-ditches constructed at 50-m (165-ft) intervals. At the end of the field with the lowest elevation, corrugated steel pipe culverts are installed under the headland road in each V-ditch to control rainwater runoff into intermediate canals. Runoff water from the fields is diverted to a holding pond to prevent any increase in peak water runoff rates and to allow for more uniform drainage rate than experienced to date. After the drainage system is installed, harvest strips are ready for grinding and sloping operations. Surface vegetation, made up of small, waxy-leafed shrubs such as Gallberry, Bayberry, Magnolia, and scattered pond pine, can be effectively ground and incorporated into the upper surface of the peat layer. Here, it will rapidly decompose and have little effect on overall peat quality, thus eliminating the standard practice of pushing the vegetation and upper wood layer into long windrows with bulldozers and hauling this debris from the fields. Incorporating vegetation into the upper surface is known as the initial 102-mm (4-in.) surface vegetation grind and is accomplished by using a modified Bros Rota Mixer. Following this operation, and by using the same unit, a sec¬ond grind with a depth of 200-255 mm (8-10 in.) is made. This reduces the debris to a finer consistency, mixes it with the upper peat layer, and grinds any wood found in the upper 200-255 mm (8-10 in.). Laboratory and pilot plant investigations have indicated that copper recoveries of 50% can be achieved with fine grinding and flotation of a copper reverberatory furnace slag, Microscopic and microprobe studies indicate that the recoverable copper is in the form of matte, chalcocite, and metallic copper; the percentage of copper in particles appearing to be copper-free was from 0.23 - 0.54%.

The west central Upper Peninsula of Michigan contains a large resource of graphitic slate. The slate has potential industrial use as a substitute for shale currently used in the production of portland cement. Some of the unweathered slate, however, has a high concentration of pyritic sulfur that can create emission problems when processed in a kiln. A low-cost method to reduce the sulfur content of the slate through the optimization of pyrite oxidation in a bio-heap leaching operation was investigated. In this study, optimal conditions for the bacterium Thiobacillus ferrooxidans were created to promote pyrite oxidation and, therefore, sulfur removal from the slate. Preliminary lab scale flask tests using crushed and sized slate (-40 + 100 mesh) and T. ferrooxidans bacteria in a sulfuric acid medium resulted in 70% oxidation of pyrite over a one-month period. Subsequent column leaching tests on coarser materials (-3/8+1/4 in.) operated for six months resulted in a maximum reduction of total sum of 75%. These data suggest that bio-heap leaching to remove sulfur from the slate for use as a kiln feed material is viable.

The material composition of product is defined as the quantity of metal used per unit of product manufactured during a year. This ratio measures the efficiency of converting a ray material into final products. The material composition of product has shown steady and persistent declines over time for most metals and materials. This tendency demonstrates the continued improvements in manufacturing technology, resulting from substitutions of other materials and improvements in production efficiency. The purpose of this paper is to study trends in the material composition of product to reveal the impact of advanced materials on the use of traditional metals.

The use of chemical additives in ultrafine grinding will be reviewed in this paper for the case of grinding of quartz in solutions of surfactants and inorganic electrolytes including some dispersants under different conditions of pH and ionic strength. Mechanisms are examined by correlating the grinding effects with those obtained for the influence of these chemicals on zeta potential, pulp fluidity and flocculation/dispersion characteristics. The analysis suggests grinding depends mainly on the state of aggregation of the ground products in- side the mill and the pulp fluidity. Implications of the observed effects on ultrafine grinding in general are discussed.

Ore Reserve Models are well established evaluation and mine planning tools. BY definition, these models are made up of regularly sized blocks, arranged in a three dimensional matrix. Two dimensions correspond to north and east directions, and the third, to the depth or elevation. The dimensions of the blocks need not be equal, but generally at least two of the dimensions are equal. The blocks are located in space by coordinates which are generally translated into index values for computer applications. Each block will have quantitative attributes, such as grades, densities, rock characteristics, etc. assigned to it. The process of assigning values to each block in the three dimensional matrix is the process of ore reserve model development. One of several interpolation procedures may be employed to predict the value of a block, based on surrounding data. Block value models have several uses. The utilization of block models in ore reserve computations is quite common. Here, ore reserves may be calculated by level or by cross-section for the entire deposit. For each ore reserve calculation, multiple cut-off grades may be analyzed to determine the ore reserves under different cut-off conditions. The other major use of block value models is in mine simulation. Through simulation, profitable studies that analyze the effect of alternate ore removal sequences can be undertaken to determine economic optimality. Other studies that are undertaken in mine simulation problems include the evaluation of mine layout, pit slope effects, and the impact of varying cut-off grades.

Just a few years ago my company was referred to as the Marion Steam Shovel Company. We still make shovels, both two and eight crawler types. The eight crawler stripping shovel appears to have been replaced by the walking dragline for overburden removal and in some cases for the mineral as well. The walking dragline appeared in the coal fields in the early 1930's. It owes its popularity today to the fact that it can cope with overburden depths in excess of 100 feet and with blasted sedimentary rock, all at an 0 & 0 cost of ± 10¢/BCY.
