The broad front concept is based on the principle that gasification can be achieved more efficiently and completely from a plane broad combustion front in contrast to other geometries obtainable with current methods of gasification. By restricting combustion to a plane broad front, the ideal condition for gasification is achieved. A plane broad combustion front can be developed in coal by initiating and propagating combustion from the walls of an oriented channel and collecting product gases from another similarly oriented channel. Flow will then be directed along the highest permeability of the coal bed, the available cross-sectional area for fluid flow is substantially increased and, more importantly, the increased flow will be uniformly distributed throughout the whole mass of coal. The success of the method is greatly dependent on how well an initial and rigorous permeability survey and associated corrective measures yield a well-characterized coal bed. To maintain uniform reaction rates, the advance of the combustion front is located with pressure- or mass flow-transducers. These sensors are then connected to servo-controlled mufflers for controlling segments of the fire front which are advancing ahead of others. Finally, the development of the concept to overcome problems of roof collapse, reactant and product gas leakages, and water invasion are briefly summarized.

El Teniente Mine expansion plans are currently under development and construction stages through an integrated project strategy that will allow the continuity of future mining. The deepest sector corresponds to Andes Norte Project that faced rockburst risks during tunneling in a completely different manner, implementing different actions for the mitigation of seismic hazard and seismic risk management, based on the following main aspects: rock mass preconditioning techniques such as destress blasting and hydraulic fracturing, improvement of rock support design with the inclusion of elements with higher energy dissipation capacities, use of mechanized equipment for the most critical activities in addition to re-entry protocols and improvements in geological, geomechanical and seismic data collection procedures to reduce the uncertainty of rock mass behavior. The current seismic risk management strategy integrates all of these elements and is the basis of construction methodologies in use, supporting the technical feasibility of tunneling in high-stress environments.

In order to rapidly evaluate an area for its mineral potential, a reconnaissance exploration program generally includes the following: 1. Outlining an area of interest 2. Identifying known mineral deposits 3. Bibliographic search of the literature 4. Evaluation of geochemical and geophysical surveys 5. Compilation and review of geologic maps The information now available from various government agencies regarding the mineral deposits, geology, and geochemistry may be integrated and used as a tool to rapidly evaluate an area before the field season. The databases most commonly used in the United States are the USBM MAS/HILS system and the USGS MRDS system for their information on mineral deposits; GEOREF and GEOARCHIVE for bibliographic information; and NURE data for the geochemistry and geophysics. In conjunction with the project geologist, this information may be used to plot known deposits and their geochemical signature as well as any other areas of like signature for further examination.

This paper presents the results of 18 high-G centrifuge tests performed at the Electric Power Research Institute's Coal Cleaning Test Facility in January 1985. These tests, using -28 mesh (0.6mm) froth flotation product, show that the high-G, solid-bowl centrifuge can produce clean-coal moistures of less than 12 percent at solids recovery rates exceeding 98 percent. The high-G centrifuge achieved these low moistures by applying centrifugal forces up to 2,000 times gravity. Because these forces are two to three times the forces used in a screen-bowl centrifuge, the high-G centrifuge can use a solid bowl and still produce a low-moisture product. The solid bowl captures ultrafines that would pass through a screen bowl, and thus obtains higher recovery rates than a screen-bowl centrifuge.

The development of techniques for separating minerals based on differences in their specific gravities is reviewed and their present applications in process technology outlined. Special emphasis is placed on the development, in Australia, of new models of the spiral concentrator. The mechanics of separation of spiral separators are stated, including the effects of operating parameters, Some of the traditional areas of spiral application are described, together with examples of new applications such as treatment of fine alluvials and tailings, separation of liberated minerals at coarse sizes and fine coal recovery.

This paper describes the development of a new method and device for determining the in-situ mechanical properties of rock masses. The method involves a self-recording mechanical deformation gauge for sensing-recording she deformation of the borehole wall when loaded hydraulically. The self-recording feature of the gauge eliminates the difficult technical problem of transmitting signals over very long cables for measurements at great depths. Adopting a mechanical gauge instead of electronic, electrical, optical or grid techniques eliminates delicate instrumentation and installation problems. Moreover, mechanical gauges are inherently rugged and suitable for use in severe borehole conditions including very high temperatures. The technique was tested in limestone, basalt and granite specimen. The calculated mechanical property values for 1 the tests agree with those obtained by conventional testing methods. The self-recording mechanical deformation gauge has a minimum reading of 50 micro inches (1.27 x 10-3mm), comparable with electrical resistance strain gauges, capable of reading deformations over a range of 0.25 inches (6.35mm). The sensitivity, ease and accuracy of the method recommends it highly for in-situ rock modulus measurements.

Variations in ore grade, mineralogy, and copper pricing structures over the life of the Inspiration mine have mandated many modifications to the treatment methods to maximize process economics. In the 1970's, copper prices generally declined, while inflation, wages, and interest rates increased. A metallurgical treatment route had to be developed for this continuing economic climate which would be capable of minimizing labor, energy, and capital cost requirements. After many years of development, the patented "Ferric Cure" process was introduced to satisfy these requirements. This dump leach process for treatment of mixed oxide/sulfide ore includes: strict mineralogical control of ore placed for leaching, controlled leach pad construction, solution saturation and curing of the pads with higher acid concentrations, and, finally, rinsing of the cured pads for removal of dissolved copper. Leach solutions, high in sulfuric acid during the cure application and low in sulfuric acid during the rinse, contain sufficient ferric iron to enhance the leaching of chalcocitic sulfide minerals.

Southern Peru Copper Corporation (SPCC) has recently completed the construction of copper leaching, solvent extraction, and electrowinning facilities at their Toquepala and Cuajone plants in Southern Peru. Much of the ore for these new operations is the result of the existing mining operations that have been in existence as early as 1959. At Toquepala, pre-conditioning and bacterial dump leaching of the sulfide ore that was too low in copper content to be processed through the copper concentrator began in 1987. The Cuajone heap leach operation is treating copper oxide ore that has been stockpiled since the Cuajone concentrator began operation in 1976. The pregnant leach solutions from the dump leaching at Toquepala and the permanent pad heap at Cuajone are combined into one plant feed solution. Adjacent to the large dumps at Toquepala, a solvent extraction and electrowinning facility has been constructed. The electrowinning facility has a planned annual production rate of35,000 metric tons per year Grade A cathode copper. Initial production of the cathode copper began in November 1995.

7.1 INTRODUCTION Subsidence measurements include surveys of surface and sub- surface movements and measurements and monitoring of surface structural damages. In this chapter the most commonly employed methods are discussed. 7.2 MEASUREMENT OF SURFACE MOVEMENT Surface movements involve two basic components, subsidence and displacement. The other five components (i.e., slope, curvature, strain, twisting, and shearing) are derived from the two basic components. Since all measurements are geometrical, they can be measured by common surveying techniques. 7.2.1 MONUMENTS The first step is to select the types of monuments or surveying stations. Various types of monuments have been employed. The simplest one is a paint mark on the pavement or concrete slab, although this should be discouraged because it is easily affected by artificial or environmental factors. Others use steel or wooden rods, 2 to 3 in. in diameter or square by 2 to 5 ft long, driven all the way down, flush with the ground. Both types of-monuments have no provision for frozen ground heave and both are tampered with easily. A more elaborate type is shown in Fig. 7.1 (O'Rourke et al., 1982). A rebar or iron pipe, 2 in. in diameter by 6 ft long is driven down to nearly flush with ground surface. The top 4-ft section of the hole around the pipe is enlarged to 1 ft in diameter and grouted with concrete. The most sophisticated type of monument is shown in Fig. 7.2 (Conroy and Gyannaty, 1983a). It consists of two hollow steel pipes. The inner I-in. pipe, 10 ft. long is enclosed by a 2-in. pipe at the upper 5-ft. interval. The gap between pipes is filled with foam to isolate the inner pipe from external environmental effects. The bottom of the inner pipe can either remain open or be sealed with a cap, depending on whether the ground is dry or wet. 7.2.2 MONUMENT ARRANGEMENT AND SURVEY LINES The monuments are installed strategically to form survey lines. Three basic types of monument arrangements are shown in Fig. 7.3. Figs. 7.3a and 7.3b are for single and multiple panels respectively; Fig. 7.3~ is mainly for research purposes with multiple survey lines both in longitudinal and transverse directions. This is extremely useful for defining the distributions of ground deformation, as shown in Figs. 2.10 and 2.11. Basically there are two types of survey lines: the whole basin survey line which extends across the panel width or length (e.g., lines R, R, in Fig. 7.3 a&b), and the half basin survey line which covers approximately half of the panel width or length (e.g., lines R, F in Fig. 7.3 &b). Survey lines are generally straight and linear. They should be located on the major crosssections of the subsidence basin. Survey lines must extend beyond the edge of the opening for a sufficient distance so that the edges of the subsidence basin can be determined accurately. The minimum distance from the edge of the opening must be [ ] where h = mining depth, [ ] = angle of draw, and [ ] = 5 to 7 times monument spacing for whole basin surveys, or 8 to 10 times the monument spacing for half basin surveys. There must be at least two controlling monuments at each end of each survey line. Controlling monuments must be located beyond the influence of underground mining. The spacing of the monuments ranges from 15 to 200 ft. The UK National Coal Board (NCB, 1975) recommended a spacing equivalent to 0.20 of the mining depth. Peng and Geng (1982) recommended that the maximum monument spacing be dependent on mining depths as follows:

"When designing segmental lining at a cross passage, modern solutions try to bear the loads transferred around the opening within the rings by using shear elements in the ring joints. Commonly used shear systems providing coupling are cam & pocket, shear keys, bicones and steel dowels. These solutions have advantages and disadvantages, but most importantly they have limits in their capacity to stabilize the lining at cross passages. With the help of 3D-FE-analyses for an opening of one segmental ring these different solutions are compared taking various ground conditions into account. As a result the capacity of the individual system is determined. Notice is made regarding the applicability of the system as well as the consequences for the design and the verification. INTRODUCTION The design of the lining at a cross passage is among the most difficult tasks when designing TBM-tunnels. At one time the bedding of the lining disappears due to the excavation behind the lining, at another the ring-structure is interrupted when parts of the lining are removed for the opening. The trick is to transfer the loads around the opening into other segments and to areas of the lining which are still supported by the ground. In the rings immediately at the cross passage this creates a distribution of forces within the segments that strongly deviates from that of the regular lining. The design needs to consider the boundary conditions of the respectively chosen solution for stiffening of the opening and its peculiarities in the modeling as well as in the verifications. In the past segments of steel or an internal strutting of steel (DAUB 2013) placed around the later openings were commonly used, see Figure 1. The application of a strutting from the outside to the rings is restricted to such circumstances when for example a connection from a shaft to the tunnel can be made in suitable ground conditions (Ring and Glomp 2012). Though steel segments provide a robust solution, they are expensive due to their laborious manufacture, the high proportion of construction steel required and the time consuming installation in the tunnel (Häfliger 2013). A strutting of steel requires extensive design and verification. The resulting structure usually weighs several tons and must be erected as well as demounted within the confined space of the tunnel, requiring suitable transport and assembly equipment. The cross section remains restricted, thus causing a bottleneck for TBM operations and hindering the works and installations for the cross passage works."

Recent expansion programs have made the Yunkang underground coal mine the number one producer in Shenxi Province. The mine is the newest in the Datong Coal Administration, currently rated at around 3 Mt/a of coal. Located in the Wa Chushi mountain range about 23 km north of the city of Datong, the mine has undergone a series of expansion phases since startup in 1973. Initial design capacity was 1.5 Mt/a and ultimately, production will be brought to an estimated 7.0 Mt/a by 1985, according to mine superintendent Li Jia-zhi. How Coal Occurs The coal, Jurassic in age, occurs in three economically identifiable seams designated No. 2, 3, and 7. Seams are 100-250 m below the surface. Reserves from this economic zone were not quantified, but Superintendent Li indicated that there was enough mapped out to sustain the expanded production rate for over 20 years. Below the Jurassic coal is another possible economic zone, a Permocarboniferous coal lying 400-600 m below the surface. Little development drilling has been conducted to ascertain its potential. The Jurassic beds are relatively flat and coal quality is reportedly one of the best in China. Heat content of the coal runs around 33.5 MJ/kg and the ash content is less than 10%. In some areas, it is less than 7%. Coal preparation is simple and involves a washing and screening separation into four principal size fractions. Washed coal is stored in one of six storage silos, each with 4000-t capacity. Mining the No. 2 Seam Since startup, primary production has been derived from the No. 2 seam. The coal is relatively hard and is topped by a hard cement-like conglomerate. These factors, coupled with an average thickness between 4 to 6 m, precluded the use of conventional longwall techniques, according to mine engineers. On Nov. 4, 1981 A/S Sydvaranger's 1-kt/h (1,100-stph) wet-process, iron ore ball mill completed its first four months of uninterrupted, full-load operation in Kirkenes, Norway. This 6.5-m-diam (21-ft-diam) mill is driven by a gearless ring or wraparound 8.1-MW (10,860-hp) motor at 13.1 rpm-a first of a kind in this segment of industry. This article examines reasons for selecting this type of drive over more conventional schemes, lists specific advantages of such large mills, and describes the installation in Norway. History For almost a decade, good operating experiences have been gained with 28 gearless ring motor drives in the cement industry, driving 2.5 to 4-m-diam (8.2 to 13-ft-diam) tube mills with drive powers ranging from about 3-4 MW (4,000 - 8,000 hp). Why then did the mineral ore processing industry hesitate until 1980 to adopt this successful concept for similar applications on ball, semiautogenous, and autogenous mills? There are a number of good reasons in the eyes of conservative mill builders and operators, the most commonly cited ones are: • No operating experience in this segment of specialized industry. • More severe environmental conditions in the wet ore grinding process. • An indifferent attitude of mill builders and electric motor manufacturers towards new drive technologies. • Limited confidence in solid-state power supply systems, such as frequency converters of the required size. There have been and still are numerous problems associated with low-speed geared mill drives of any kind, especially with individual motor/gear sizes approaching or exceeding about 4 MW (5,360 hp). Every mill builder knows about them, but operators learn to accept them as inevitable. The Decision to Change Three things combined to break this technological stalemate: the courage and progressive spirit of one major iron ore processor in Scandinavia, the cooperation of three experienced manufacturers, and an unusual application problem that could not be solved by any conventional approach. The last factor was surely the decisive one, but the first one does not come as a surprise either. The Swedes near Kiruna and the Norwegians around Kirkenes are experienced ore miners and processors, and much credit goes to them for technological breakthroughs in the industry. At A/S Sydvaranger in Kirkenes, above the Polar circle at about the latitude of Alaska's northern tip, the existing grinding facilities, with a total of 14 100 to 240-t/h (110 to 264-stph) ball mills, can not be expanded. Nevertheless, to increase mill throughput, only installing a larger mill in place of an existing smaller one was a practical alternative. For this replacement, the owners set requirements that seemed impossible to meet: • The old 100-t/h (110-stph) ball mill should be replaced with a new ball mill with 10 times the rated throughput, without significantly impairing the operation of the remaining mills, and without significantly changing the mill building. • The new mill should have a variable-speed drive to ultimately optimize the grinding process by means of a closed-loop process¬computer-controlled grinding cycle, and to minimize the specific energy consumption. • Availability, efficiency, and life expectancy of all new components must be higher than those being replaced. • Inrush-current and harmonic loads on the rather weak electric supply line must be minimized to ensure safe plant operation. All old ball mills at A/S Sydvaranger are the geared type, using single synchronous and wound-rotor, slow-speed motors with ring-and-pinion gears. Operators are familiar with the limitations and problems associated with such drives, and they are aware that the following items become major concerns when drive powers are drastically increased: • Gears are subject to wear and tear, require frequent maintenance, and eventual replacement of major parts. • Gears are sensitive to misalignment, overload, and thermal distortion, limiting their useful life. • On dual or quadruple drives, load-sharing and torque oscillations between motors can be a major reason for concern. • At these speeds, ring-and-pinion gears reach their torque transmission capabilities altogether at around 4 MW (5,360 hp) per motor/pinion. To obtain the desired variable-speed performance of the new drive, the only practical and economical conventional solution would have been a frequency-controlled, low- or medium-speed dual motor drive with about 8 MW (10,720 hp) of power. This, however, was not feasible because of limited floor space. Therefore, bids were solicited for the alternative drive method, the gearless ring motor. General Considerations Why are such large mills considered? After all, one could avoid all the problems by simply staying with smaller mill unit sizes. Under competitive pressures of free markets, however, grinding efficiencies and specific energy consumption become key factors in selecting new equipment. This paper (1) presents new data on the use of horizontal curves to optimize the alignment of belt conveyors. The operating concept of a horizontal curve is simple. As an element of the belt passes through the curve, it is motivated to drift toward the center of the curve by unbalanced tension forces in the belt. This lateral drift is resisted by the forces of friction and gravity, which in turn can be stated as a function of drift. Resisting forces, as a function of drift, are stated in terms of variables such as the amount of load on the belt, and parameters such as the trough angle, tilt angle, and super elevation angle, and number of rolls in the idler. The trick is to determine that the belt will drift to a position of equilibrium within predictable limits, without physically constraining the edge of the belt. In practice this prediction is not easy to make without the aid of a computer. The motivating force is easy to calculate, but its value is continually changing throughout the angle subtended by the curve arc. The resisting forces are constant throughout the curve for a given drift and load condition, but the calculations are very complex. Data in this paper will assist the conveyor designer in making preliminary calculations for horizontal curves. Presented is the equation for calculating the motivating force, and a family of curves that show the resisting force as a function of lateral drift for some commonly encountered conveyor design criteria.

America's industry uses about 44% of the total energy consumed by the nation directly as fuel burned in industrial plants or indirectly as fuel burned by utilities to provide electric power. In addition, industry requires raw materials or feed stocks derived from fuel sources or having fuel value. This represents about 11% of total U. S. energy consumption, bringing industry's portion to about 55%. Adding that portion of energy consumption required by the transportation sector to move raw materials, intermediates, and finished products, the total energy impact of industry approaches 213 of total U. S. consumption. It is obvious that American industry has the largest share in the task of balancing energy demand and supply. What are we going to do? -- We must increase the supply of energy and increase the beneficial results obtained from each unit expended. Both avenues, unfortunately, are limited in extent and speed. Increases in supply cannot occur without drastic and permanent increases in cost. These increases in cost are un- desirable and inflationary but do provide incentive for the rational businessman to expend the effort and money required to improve the effectiveness of energy in industry.

There has been a phenomenal increase in production of coal from opencast mines in India. At the same time environmental problems caused by mining are receiving greater atttention. Deterioration in ambient air quality due to increased concentration of suspended particulate matter (SPM) in and around an opencast project is a major problem. Some measured values of SPM level around opencast mines in diff coalfields show that in many cases the TLV of 500 ug/m^3 is exceeded. The impact of dust emission from a mining project on surrounding areas are estimated by using computer models for air pollution dispersal but such treatment suffers from errors in predicting the dust load and failure to take into account the terraced nature of the opencast mine site. The haul roads have been identified as the most prolific source of dust and some recent trials on haul road dust consolidation in Indian mines are mentioned in the paper. Statistics regarding pneumoconiosis cases in Indian coal mines for the last decade are presented to show an increase in reported cases and a gist of the recently amended regulations on the subject of precaution against dust is mentioned.

The Hallmark Distribution Center is one of the most sophisticated material handling and order filling facilities in the world. The 53 million cubic foot facility houses an ultra-modern, computer- monitored distribution complex that handles as many as 1/4 million orders per day. The Distribution Center replaces 16 leased buildings scattered through- out metropolitan Kansas City and, in addition, re-leased 4 floors in mid-town Kansas City needed for creative and administrative expansion. This new facility is the nerve center for distribution of Hallmark products in United States and Latin America. The size and gross numbers of all parts of the system is a significant accomplishment, but the purpose of this paper is to explain the technical advancements in the state-of-the-art of material handling and controls. The system iteself is made up of seven sub-systems including receiving, warehousing, picking rack stocking, towline, order filling, order sorting, and shipping. Significant techniques were used in each of these areas as well as technical advancements in the state-of-the- art. The most significant points are in 4 of the areas and are discussed in this paper.

The Westside Light Rail Project, a major 19.3-km (12-mile) extension of Portland, Oregon's light rail system, includes 4.6 km (2.8 miles) of twin 5.8-m (19-ft) diameter running tunnels, a binocular type station which, at 80 m (260 ft) below the ground surface, will be the deepest mass transit station in North America, two 9.4-m (31-ft) diameter station access shafts, and a 5.2-m (17¬ft) diameter ventilation shaft. The tunnels are being excavated by TBM and conventional rock, soft ground, and mixed-face methods. Geologic conditions, alignment, underground opening design, excavation method selection, and payment provisions for excavation and initial ground support are discussed.

During the past two years, there has been an increasing acceptance of process automation among ferrous, non-ferrous and non-metallic rock processing operations in an attempt to keep total unit costs in line in a market situation where labor and material costs are rising almost daily. Previous technical papers (1) (2) (3) (4) (5) have described, in considerable detail, instrumentation and automatic control devices that have been successfully applied in a wide variety of crushing and grinding facilities. While many of the basic control philosophies that evolved almost ten years ago remain essentially unchanged, new components and devices have been developed during the past two years that permit these philosophies to be better implemented in operating plants. Some of these devices and their application will be discussed with particular emphasis placed in describing the basic control philosophy employed as well as some of the hardware or components comprising typical crushing and grinding circuit control systems. Before any instrumentation or automatic control system can be successfully devised for a specific facility, there must be a clear understanding and agreement by supplier and user as to the control system objective. In the case of a crusher feed rate control system, the objective is generally to maximize thru-put of a given finished product size. While this is often the case in a grinding circuit automatic control system, the reasons may be entirely different. Taconite processors whose end product is to be pelletized, generally attempt to control their grind within narrow limits to optimize balling action. Other milling operations are more concerned with obtaining metallurgical liberation and can, in many cases, tolerate wider swings in finished grind.

As part of a general project to simulate a concentrator, the Brenda Mines Limited secondary crushing plant, located near Peachland, B. C., was sampled during the summer and winter of 1975 to develop a digital crushing plant simulator specific to the Brenda operation. The purpose of this simulator was to study the influence of manipulable process variables on important responses and to permit study of alternative circuit configurations if desired. This paper describes the simulation methodology employed and presents the results of a computer study of the secondary crushing plant (1).
