Modern high-performance disc filters such as the BoVac Disc Filter have set new standards in applications where large capacities of solids, liquids and air have to be managed through the filters. These disc filters have an enormous hydraulic capacity. For applications in mineral processing - with a special focus on tailings – which typically have high solids throughputs but low filtrate and air flows, this capacity can be used to expand the filtration area while maintaining the benefits of very good cake discharge even with thin cakes (4-5 mm) and a high filter speed. Research work over the last century has proven that increasing the filter area should be achieved by increasing the disc diameter. Because adding more discs leads to big problems with the cake discharge. However, as the disc diameter increases, the filter segments become longer and heavier. A suitable compromise was therefore found by doing both. The result is the first vacuum disc filter that offers significantly more than 300 m² of filtration area, but has no more than 6 discs.

Pacific Rim markets for export coal already represent a larger market than the total tonnage imported into the European Community countries and they will continue to expand. The largest importers will continue to be in the sector comprising Japan, Korea, Hong Kong and Tai- wan. It is likely that the total Pacific Rim markets will reach 206 m.t.p.a. by 1990 and 290 m.t.p.a. by 2000, with the major growth in steam coal demand. Australia has an efficient coal industry, represents a stable long term source of supply and is favourably situated geographically to continue to be the largest single supply source.

The disaster at the Upper Big Branch (UBB) mine 2010 has demonstrated the destructive violence of a coal dust explosion by killing 29 miners in the worst mining accident the United States has experienced in almost 40 years. This explosion brought to light that the United States mining industry must strengthen explosion prevention and explosion hazard detection practices. Recent legislation such as the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (MINER Act) pushed the strengthening of explosion and disaster response and miner protection in addition to stricter regulations on the sealing of abandoned areas and on conveyor belt flame resistance. The focus of this new act was on how to respond to a disaster or explosion, yet not much improvement was made with respect to prevention explosion disasters. Researchers at the Colorado School of Mines have recently concluded extensive research into methane and coal dust explosion prevention practices and regulations as it may be applicable to underground mines in the United States. This research aims to forward more studies into the use and adoption of standards and procedures that have been utilized in countries with strong explosion prevention histories.

A detailed laboratory study was carried out to investigate the effect of the particle size distribution on the grinding rate parameters, Si, for the dry ball milling of quartz and limestone. Contrary to the present belief, the Si values were found to vary strongly with the particle size distribution. In particular it was observed that: (i) the Si values increased with the fineness of the particulate charge - the increase being more pronounced in the case of the coarser sizes, (ii) the next finer size class had the maximum effect on the breakage of the particles of a given size class, while the coarser size classes had only a slight effect, (iii) the effect of two or more size classes was non-additive, and significant higher order inter-size interactions were indicated. The importance of these results in the context of the analysis, design and scale-up of the comminution systems is discussed.

It is generally known and accepted that the efficiency of the blast furnace process, expressed by the symbols specific production and coke consumption, is influenced by a large number of variables connected to the type of burden, the alloy contents of the produced iron and the conditions of production as composition and preheating of the blast, the furnace heat losses and the possible use of fuels added on the tuyere level. It is furthermore obvious, that the coke consumption of the process will be influenced by specific production which could be said to be the result of two counter-acting influences. With high production, realized through intensive blowing, the passage time of the ore through the furnace is shortened leading to a decrease of the indirect reduction taking place in the upper part of the shaft within the temperature range of 300 to 1000°C. Simultaneously the external heat losses (constant in time) will be smaller calculated on each ton of iron and the resulting change in coke consumption will be the effect of both those influences. It is certainly of interest to be able to predetermine the effect of those variables before a change in the production practice is carried out.

Duval's (now Battle Mountain Gold Co.) copper and gold deposits in the Battle Mountain District in Nevada are in two subdistricts - Copper Basin and Copper Canyon - about 18 km (11miles) apart. Location of the two subdistricts is shown in Fig. 1. The two centers of mineralization have distinctive geologic and ore characteristics that required different innovative approaches to exploration and development. Nearly all of the copper from Copper Basin has been recovered by heap leaching. Because of relatively high gold and silver values in the Copper Canyon ores, a significant part of the sulfide copper ores has been recovered by a conventional flotation mill at Copper Canyon. Recently, this mill has been converted to the recovery of gold that is mined from zones peripheral to the copper deposits. Prior to Duval's entry, small amounts of copper, gold, silver, lead, zinc, and antimony had been mined in the district over a nearly 100 year period, beginning in 1866. The bulk of the $13 million total production to 1962 was derived from copper and gold lode ores and gold placers. Duval's interest in Battle Mountain-arose directly from a submittal by Asarco, which controlled key claims in both the Copper Basin and Copper Canyon subdistricts. Asarco acquired its holdings in the district in 1959 and undertook limited exploration until mid-1961. At that time, the company decided to dispose of its interests. Duval was invited to evaluate Asarco's properties and accepted. On Dec. 6 and 7, 1961, J.E. Frost, R.C. James, R.W. Sayers, and H.A. Schmitt, representing Duval, and K. Richard and E.W. New- man, representing Asarco, visited Copper Basin and Copper Canyon. Frost concluded that the properties were of considerable interest and prepared, by Jan. 12, 1962, a voluminous report recommending that Duval acquire and explore Asarco's properties. Furthermore, he recommended a large initial exploration program that included not only geologic mapping, geochemistry, and geophysics, but also the extensive drilling that was to involve, as the first phase of exploration, 49 drill holes in Copper Basin and 21 drill holes in Copper Canyon. Following property agreements between Duval and Asarco, and Duval and several other claim owners, geologic mapping, geochemical surveys, and drilling began in August 1962. Exploration drilling was completed in July 1964 and engineering studies in April 1965. Development of the Battle Mountain properties was authorized in July 1965, and production commenced in the first quarter of 1967. Because of the unusually high oxide copper content of the ore bodies, particularly in Copper Basin, a much larger than typical proportion of the copper in the deposits has been recovered by heap leaching. The generalized geology and ore zones of the Copper Basin are as shown in Fig. 2 and of Copper Canyon in Fig. 3.

The somewhat misnomered "continuous" face section is in most mines today still far from perfect continuity. Achieving uninterrupted flow of coal from the mining machine to the outside has been a long sought for goal. Clearly, the largest problem to be solved in continuous mining today is one of increasing the cutting time of the miner. Full machine utilization can never be achieved with the new high capacity miners, as long as their performance is tied to that of the shuttle car. Figure No. I illustrates the point at which shuttle car haulage distance determines unit productivity rather than the productive capacity of the miner. Continuous mining is never realized. A recent development has proven, however, that truly continuous mining and haulage is possible. The Bell & Zoller Coal Company working with the Research and Development Department of Hewitt-Robins Inc. developed and perfected a new mining system which offers advantages in terms of increased productivity at reduced mining costs and enhances the safety of personnel at the face. This new system involves the use of two pieces of equipment that form a unbroken link, at all times, between the mining machine and the mine belt haulage system. These pieces are a Mobile Bridge Conveyor, and an extensible panel conveyor. The following areas of discussion will be covered during the review of this development. I. Tar sand deposits in Utah represent more than 25 billion barrels of in-place bitumen, 96% of the known U.S. reserves. The technological development of a hot water processing strategy for the Canadian tar sands and the commercial Production of synthetic crude oil from this natural resource suggest that similar success may be possible for the utilization of Utah tar sands to provide our country with a new domestic source of synthetic crude oil. In this regard an active research program to develop a hot water processing strategy for Utah tar sands has been sustained at the University of Utah for the past five years. The hot water process for Utah tar sands differs significantly from that used for Canadian, tar sands due to the inherent differences in the respective bitumen viscosities and the nature of the bitumen-sand association. These differences have led to the identification of certain design criteria necessary to achieve satisfactory phase disengagement during digestion. (8,9) Subsequent flotation of the digested tar sand is a subject of current attention and is considered in this contribution for the Asphalt Ridge tar sand deposit. Although contact angle measurements of pure Asphalt Ridge bitumen indicate moderate hydrophobicity, air bubble attachment to the bitumen concentrate taken from a 37 liter flotation cell is not possible. This surprising result suggests that the flotation separation is dependent on air bubble entrapment rather than on attachment due to surface hydrophobicity. The occlusion of air bubbles in the bitumen is apparent from visual examination of the concentrate, especially at lower temperatures. It seems that a bitumen bubble agglomerate forms in the impeller region of the flotation cell, the effective density of which is such to allow the agglomerate to float to the surface. A factorial design of the major operating variables in the flotation separation indicated that the quality of separation was significantly dependent on the flotation temperature and to a lesser extent on the degree of agitation. For a flotation temperature of 77C recovery of 96.7 percent was realized at a grade of 61.0 percent bitumen. The improved separation at higher flotation temperatures was found to be due to the decrease in bitumen viscosity resulting in more effective rejection of coarse sand from the concentrate.

Colony Development Operation is a joint venture currently consisting of four active members; The Oil Shale Corporation (TOSCO); Ashland Oil Inc.; Shell Oil Company and Atlantic Richfield Company, operator of the project. The initial efforts on the Colony project began in the spring of 1965. Pilot mining and semi-works engineering programs continued, in phases, to completion in the fall of 1972 when commercialization of oil shale was deemed realistic. Since that time, Colony efforts have been directed toward evaluation of the data collected during the semi-works operation and in designing a commercial operation. In October of 1974, Colony announced: "because of economic and national energy policy uncertainties it was suspending plans to start construction of a commercial oil shale plant on private lands in northwestern Colorado, scheduled for spring of 1975."

The risk of TBM jamming because of squeezing rock mass or excessive caving (instability of the cavity) conditions is always a focal point while boring long and deep tunnels with shielded TBMs. Mechanized excavation provides a large amount of real-time data, for each machine’s parameters. Several analyses have been executed to assess the correlations between different sets of TBM parameters for the exploratory tunnel. Instead of analyzing the full dataset, a different approach is proposed, with data processed sequentially to simulate the real excavation situation. The probability distributions are recalculated together with their statistical parameters while advancing. This approach is extended also to the training of a Machine Learning model able to foresee the behavior at future rings based on past rings (using a Recurrent Neural Network). The predictions show a promising first step toward creating practical tools that can assist contractors and designers to correlate and predict TBM excavation data. These tools will assist to predict and quantify high risk situations that could arise during excavation.

Today there are numerous electronic rotating vane and thermal (hot-wire) anemometers, as well as vortex meters available to measure air velocity. Of these, a laboratory and field evaluation has found that certain instruments are better suited to routine airflow measurements in mine roadways and ventilation ducts. This paper concludes a study sponsored by the Atomic Energy Control Board of Canada, that was introduced at the 5th U.S. Symposium. The study investigated the suitability of currently available electronic anemometers as replacements for the traditional mechanical analog devices while maintaining standard methods such as the continuous traverse. Six electronic instruments were subjected to extensive tests under controlled conditions both in a wind-tunnel and in the field at an underground mine. The evaluation concluded that ergonomics and design were major considerations in unit preference as most of the instruments had very similar performance characteristics. Specific findings were: a) In the wind-tunnel the vane anemometers, especially the "micro" vanes, were more susceptible to misalignment or yaw effects but these were not noticeable in the field; b) Both the vortex and hot-wire anemometers were suitable for continuous traverses of mine roadways; c) Traversing ventilation ducts was more practical than a Pitot-tube multi-point assessments or discharge measurements; d) Yaw is a major concern in duct measurements; e) The continuous traversing method for roadways overestimates the average air velocity; f) Hot-wire anemometers can require significant air density corrections; and g) Hot-wire anemometers are better suited than rotating vanes to mine roadways of less than 1 m/s average air velocity. Based on research detailed in this paper, the ventilation engineer should be able to match the mine's requirements with the presented instrument performance characteristics, thereby optimizing the purchase of a new anemometer and the efficiency with which air velocities are measured.

Crystalline Flake Graphite is a strategic mineral. Since 1954 nearly all North American consumption has been imported from offshore. The Bouthillier Project in Quebec, Canada, is Orrwell Energy's bid to enter the market. Milling of flake graphite is considered easy, yet more problems have been encountered in flowsheet and plant design than in most other minerals. A fresh approach to existing technology was taken, giving results that are highly satisfactory. The key to graphite liberation without flake deterioration is found to be in autogenous grinding. In addition to producing marketable coarse graphite by such autogenous grinding, flotation and tabling, super purity fines can be produced using repeated regrinding, elutriation and flotation. This paper discusses the design of a 500 TPD plant based upon the results obtained from bench and pilot plant studies.

"These studies address the relationship between mill media sizing and its grinding efficiency. Starting with the results from a review of the literature, the issues of initial media sizing for a new ball milling circuit, and then optimal media sizing for an existing milling operation, were studied. The Functional Performance parameters “Mill Grinding Efficiency” and cumulative “Mill Grinding Rates” from both plant and test-scale equipment were used, and provide valuable new insight into this topic. A plant media sizing diagnostic tool is presented, as are newly developed testing equipment and evaluation methods, and recent case studies. REVIEW OF MEDIA SIZING LITERATURE For a plant metallurgist to answer the question “How can I maximize plant profit by manipulating this grinding circuit variable?” she must know what effect the variable has on grinding circuit efficiency. Despite the significant cost of grinding media and its potential effect on production capacity, the ‘best’ media sizing remains ill-defined for any given ball mill circuit in the industry today. The underlying reasons for this will be discussed. But the importance of this issue drove Metcom and its industrial partners to take on the challenge of how to engineer the ball charge for an existing grinding circuit. In the absence of any proven method, the first step was a review of the literature. Sponsored by Cleveland-Cliffs, Inc., a broad review of the literature was undertaken, producing “The Effect of Media Sizing on Ball Milling Efficiency” (McIvor, 1997). Among hundreds of publications that were reviewed that discuss the topics of media sizing or wear, forty-five were studied in detail. These were grouped into: plant experiences; laboratory and pilot plant investigations; media wear studies; population balance modeling studies; and general papers on ball milling which included the topic of media sizing. The reader is encouraged to refer to that review. The findings remain unchanged, although some relevant papers have been written since (e.g. Staples et al, 1997; Banasi et al, 1999; Orford et al, 2006; LaMarsh, 2015). "In this paper, a case study from Çayeli Bakir Isletmeleri A.S. (Rize, Turkey) about the selective flotation of copper minerals from sphalerite is discussed. Çayeli Cu-Zn Sulfide Ore contains different ore types, such as yellow ore, clastic ore, bornite-clastic ore, bornite-yellow ore, and black ore. For some of these ore types, selective flotation of copper and zinc is very difficult presumably due to presence of secondary copper minerals such as bornite, chalcocite and covellite, and also surface oxidation. These factors affect Cu-Zn selectivity due to activation of sphalerite particles in the ore during the process. The main objective of this work was to improve Cu-Zn selectivity by optimization of the pulp chemistry for different ore types of Çayeli ore. After preliminary flotation tests investigating effects of different chemical conditions, a plant survey was performed to determine the plant performance and sources of the problems when problematic bornite-clastic ore is treated in the plant. Various chemical conditions are tested in the laboratory scale test for better depression of sphalerite in copper flotation circuit. Combination of Na2S+ZnSO4+MBS was found to be the most effective depressant scheme. INTRODUCTION Ore variability is one of the most important factors affecting performance of a process plant both in short and long term planning. The geometallurgical modelling becomes a common tool to determine ore variability problems and develop the most efficient solution during life of mine (1, 2). Flowsheet design and equipment selection and sizing are usually done based on the results of ore variability test works. However, in some cases ore variability may not be foreseen during the design stage and therefore the solutions should be developed based on the existing flowsheet and equipment in the plant. In this situation, ore characterisation, problem statement and diagnostic testing should be applied step by step. The problem could be due to changing feed grade, mineralogical characteristics, grindability and surface characteristics when flotation is involved. The variability in feed grade with fixed mineralogy can be handled with relatively simple modifications (i.e. adjusting throughput or equipment capacity) in the plant. Variability in ore mineralogy is the most complex and difficult problem to tackle. Because, mineralogical variations could bring variations in mineral composition, texture and liberation. These variations can potentially lead to the variations in grindability of the ore and flotation behaviour. Variations in grindability are usually managed by optimization of operational parameters in grinding circuit, as it would be costly to replace the existing equipment in the circuit (3). The variations in flotation behaviour are mainly due to variations in mineral types and distribution, texture and surface oxidation. One or all of these factors could be observed in a flotation operation. Therefore, a comprehensive investigation both in plant and lab scale should be conducted for definition of source of the problem. The testwork to solve the problem and retrieve the performance is planned and conducted depending on the source of the problem (4, 5)."

The Middle Mississippi River extends from the mouth of the Ohio River to the mouth of the Missouri River, a distance of about 310 kilometers (km) measured along the river. From its founding in 1764 to the first steamboat arrival in 1817, the City of St. Louis was little more than a trading post. However, with the advent of the shallow-draft steamboat, the Middle Mississippi River rapidly became a major thoroughfare of commerce. In this regard, its importance has been reflected by the development of port facilities at St. Louis and by Federal activity relating to channel maintenance and improvement. First Federal work on the Middle Mississippi River was autho¬rized by Congress in 1824. This work was for snag removal and bank clearing and was directed at reducing the hazards to steamboat traffic, particularly during low-flow periods. During the 1820's and early 1830's, the main channel threatened to move toward the Illinois shore and abandon the St. Louis port facilities. In 1836 and 1837, Congress authorized construction of permanent improvements to keep-the river next to St. Louis (Missouri shore). By 1880, it was recognized that bank clearing activities had resulted in a wider and shallower river which exacerbated navigation

Many investigators believe that column flotation cells offer significant advantages over standard mechanical machines for the flotation of fine particles. However, because of their unique design and operation, conventional techniques for flotation cell scale-up and design cannot be applied to columns. In an attempt to help alleviate this problems a population balance model based on first principles has been developed for fine particle flotation in a column. Two different terms have been considered in the model, i.e., transport and rate. Transport terms, incorporating fluid flow and bouyancy, are used to describe the movement of air bubbles, unattached particles and bubble-particle aggregates along the length of the column. Rate terms, which describe the bubble-particle attachment process, have been derived from first principle considerations. Because the model is based on first principles, it can be useful for the design, control, optimization and scale-up of column flotation cells.

The Henderson mine is a large continuous panel caving operation in central Colorado. The orebody is roughly 760 m by 910 m and will be extracted from two production levels. Each level is divided into three north - south panels 244 m to 317 m wide. The general arrangement of a production level and its associated undercut drifts is shown in Figure 1. The production drifts (3.6 m by 3.7 m) are spaced 24 m apart center to center and have undercut drifts (3.4 m by 3.8 m) 17 m directly above them. The production drifts are interconnected with drawpoint crosscuts (4 m by 4.3 m) driven on 12 m centers. Drawpoint crosscuts receive substantial brow steel and concrete support prior to undercutting. The brow steel is a 15 cm by 46 cm wide flange beam with a 2.5 cm wear plate to box in the 'cave' side of the beam. The concrete is a minimum of 0.3 m thick and the batch design results in 27 500 kPa strength. The finished drawpoint opening is 3.7 m by 3.2 m with a choke area of 3.7 m by 2.4 m. (Figure la) Undercutting and bell formation is accomplished by blasting rings of 7.6 cm holes drilled from the undercut drifts. The rings have a burden of 2.0 m and six rings develop one complete bell.

"Coal dust in an underground mining environment has always been a health and safety issue, especially with longwall faces. Efforts to integrate a flooded bed scrubber within a longwall shearer are underway at the University of Kentucky (UK) in order to reduce worker exposure. Small scale physical modeling, along with numerical modeling and full-scale experimentation, are engineering tools being used by the authors for simulating operating conditions underground. Recent advances in affordable 3D printers offer a means for fabricating accurate, scale models for obtaining timely insights prior to building large, expensive test setups. Comparing scale-model results with those of numerical modeling, such as computational fluid dynamics (CFD), lends guidance and confidence in a proposed design. This paper discusses the small scale physical modeling of a longwall shearer with an incorporated flooded-bed dust scrubber in its operating environment. A tracer gas was used in the model in lieu of dust to measure dust-capture efficiency. Results obtained from the physical model are presented and compared with those of CFD model. The small scale model and the CFD results demonstrate good agreement. Dust capture results show the usefulness of the approach in advance of actual design implementation. INTRODUCTION Dust generation is an undesirable, but innate, byproduct of all mining processes. It is particularly problematic in underground coal mining, where coal dust poses potential hazards from two fronts – health and safety. Coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (CWP), commonly referred to as black lung, is a chronic lung disease that results from the long-term overexposure to respirable coal dust. Although the prevalence of CWP has steadily and significantly declined over the three decades following the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, a study by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH, 2008) indicates that significant health hazards associated with respirable dust still exist within the coal mining industry. In addition to being a health hazard, coal dust can also create a potentially catastrophic safety hazard. Dust that is not captured or removed at its source is suspended and transported throughout a mine by the ventilation airstream. This float dust is subsequently deposited on all mine surfaces along its travel path. Without adequate application of rock dust to these surfaces, forces from a localized methane ignition can reintroduce settled coal dust into the airstream creating an explosive mixture. Therefore, capturing and removing coal dust at its source mitigates the probability of two major hazards that continue to plague the mining industry."

For many years there has been increasing pressure on mining companies, not without some justification, to design tailings storage facilities which guarantee some degree of protection against process solutions entering local groundwater and surface water flows. A fairly straightforward approach to achieving this has been to design conventional water-retaining type structures, and this has often been reinforced by the need to store large volumes of process water and seasonal run-off within the tailings facility. The conventional design uses naturally occurring geological barriers and a conventional embankment with possibly a grout curtain, or artificial barriers around the entire facility, using either imported low permeability soils, admixtures, or synthetic liners. While these approaches may achieve the primary objective of minimizing seepage, various other factors should be considered. Firstly, by depositing the tailings slurry in a sub-aqueous manner, the tailings, especially if relatively fine grained, will settle to very low densities and little or no on-going consolidation may occur over the operating life of the mine, There have been many cases where measured pore pressures within the tailings mass equal the total overburden stress, i.e., no consolidation and no strength, many years after decommissioning.
