A pilot-plant flotation concentrate containing 21.6 g/t gold and 2 kg/t silver was used for this study. Base-line cyanide and thiourea tests showed 30-40% extraction of both gold and silver. After roasting (450-750C), the maximum gold extracted was 89% with thiourea and 76% with cyanide. Pressure oxidation tests were conducted following a statistical experimental design in a 2L laboratory autoclave at 10% pulp density, and the residues were subsequently leached in acidic thiourea solutions for 2h. Leach results were presented in the form of contour maps, and optimum autoclave conditions were determined for maximum gold extraction (93%). However, silver extraction was only 7% when gold extraction was maximized.

The trace element geochemistry of the cherty, clay-rich carbonate residuum. Covering much of southern Missouri and adjacent parts of Arkansas was investigated during the early 1970's as part of a statewide geochemical survey of Missouri-1/2/3 The study was environmentally oriented and focused on the character of the "natural' geochemical environment of the state. A great deal of effort was made to collect samples that would represent the geochemical variability of the near-surface environment in an unbiased way. In general, this was accomplished by use of randomization procedures in both collection and analysis. Most of the sampling sites were selected randomly to prevent personal bias from entering into sample selection. In the laboratory, samples were analyzed in a randomized sequence to circumvent the effects of any systematic bias that may have entered into the laboratory procedures. Several residuum samples contained 1 000 parts per million (ppm) or more of Pb, Zn and Ba. All these samples were collected in Washington County in or near the barite district. The frequency distributions shown in figure 1 indicate just how unusual the residuum in Washington County is with regard to these three metals and copper. The shaded parts of the histograms represent the samples from Washington County. The histograms are based on analyses of 141 samples from 38 localities scattered over the subcrop of the Cambrian and Ordovician Formations of southern Missouri and northern Arkansas. Eight localities were selected randomly from over each of four bedrock units--Bonneterre Dolomite, Potosi and Eminence Dolomites, Roubidoux Formation, and the Jefferson City, Powell and Cotter Dolomites. Six localities were selected randomly from over the Gasconade Dolomite. The geochemical "background" for these elements in residuum is defined by samples from outside of Washington County (unshaded part of the histogram); lognormal distribution curves have been fitted to the corresponding parts of each histogram. On the Earth's Moon, obvious hazards to humans and machines are created by extreme temperature fluctuations, low gravity, and the virtual absence of any atmosphere. The most important other environmental factor is ionizing radiation. Less obvious environmental hazards that must be considered before establishing a manned presence on the lunar surface are the hazards from micrometeoroid bombardment, the nuisance of electro-statically-charged lunar dust, and an alien visual environment without familiar clues. Before man can establish lunar bases and lunar mining operations, and continue the exploration of that planet, we must develop a means of mitigating these hazards.

The abstract highlights that hearing loss is an occupational disease caused by noise exposure in the workplace. The study investigates noise-induced hearing loss among miners in underground coal mines in Turkey, considering factors like occupation, age, and exposure time. The research employs logistic regression analysis to reveal the relationship between hearing loss and these factors. The findings suggest that occupational groups and duration of noise exposure significantly affect hearing loss. Miners in production groups and those exposed to noise for 10-14 years have a higher risk. The study concludes that age does not significantly increase the probability of hearing loss.

In this paper, the results of bench scale testing of five different flotation processes to separate dolomite from phosphate are discussed. The effectiveness of each process interms of phosphate recovery and MgO content in the concentrate is used together with the reagent consumption as the basis of comparison. The water quality is found to play a major role in the performance of these processes. Effect of water hardness as well as other parameters are discussed.

Spent potliner is generated in the electrolytic process of reducing alumina to make aluminum metal using molten fluoride electrolytes. Spent potliner (SPL), obtained at the end of the pots life contains a small amount of cyanide and fluoride which present environmental problems. SPL became a listed hazardous waste under RCRA (K088) in July, 1990. One of the possible uses of spent potliner is as a substitute for Calcium Fluoride (CaF2) as a fluidizer in iron-and steel making and in the glass industry. A low viscosity and a low melting point are prime requirements for accomplishing the above. In the present study, viscosity measurements were performed. Effect of various additives, such as sand, limestone, dicalcium silicate dust, and MgO baghouse dust on the viscosity of SPL was studied. The results showed that with the addition of sand and limestone, very high fluidity of SPL melt can be obtained at significantly low temperatures. The results suggest that spent potliner mixed with additives could potentially be used as a substitute fluidizer.

Those who have had an occasion to apply geostatistics to the estimation of ore reserves are familiar with the conventional approaches of estimating average grade of quality values for arrays of regular grid squares or blocks. Further, the technology to perform geostatistical analysis and prediction for irregular two-dimensional areas has been available in a practical, readily useable form for some time. However, the generalization of this technology into three dimensions has been hampered by lack of a suitable geometrical characterization for realistic, three dimensional shapes and volumes. The extension of these estimation techniques into three dimensions has now been made possible by a successful integration of the volume modelling capabilities of 3D Component Modelling with proven 3D Geostatistical Techniques. The result is a powerful new technique for mineral ore reserves estimation in a practical, useable form. The technique allows direct geostatistical estimation of grade and quality values for precisely defined, irregular, realistic, geological, and mining shapes or volumes. This paper describes the two technologies, their integration and their application in practice to the estimation of mineral ore reserves. The paper closes with a discussion of the benefits provided by the new approach, in terms of accuracy, efficiency and practicality.

Zinc ores were first discovered in Tennessee in 1856 at Jefferson City where a deposit of oxidized ore became known as the Mossy Creek Mine. From that time until 1913 small scale attempts at prospecting and mining were made in various parts of the district. The actual systematic development of the zinc deposits dates from 1913 when the American Zinc Company started operations at Mascot. Six mines are in operation by three companies and a seventh mine is being developed by a fourth company. The total daily production from the field is 11,000 tons of crude ore, which grades from 3 to 6 per cent zinc. Most of the ore bodies are large and ramiform, resembling asyrmetrical networks in which the ore shoots form channel like branches with areas of non-comercia1 rock, called blank islands. Most of the orebodies are adapted to large scale mechanization.

The City of New Haven is planning to construct the Downtown Storm Sewer Infrastructure Improvement project to mitigate on-going stormwater flooding in the Long Wharf District. The proposed project includes a 685 cubic feet per second (cfs) stormwater pump station and a 3,200 linear feet (975 meter) long tunnel segment with an internal diameter of 120-inches (3.05 meters). This paper presents the aspects of the final design and the use of the cloud-based data management software to make better data-informed decisions. The software was used to create a spatially aware database of the subsurface conditions, as well as improve visualization and analysis of the soil properties.

Due to disturbance of their traditional roosts, caves and tree hollows, more than half of the 44 bat species found in the United States and Canada now live in abandoned and inactive underground mines. The North American Bats and Mines Project was created two years ago by Bat Conservation International Inc. (BCI) in Austin, TX and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in response to the issue of mine closure and bat habitat. The partnership provides national coordination among government and private agencies and the mining industry to minimize the loss of bats living in mines. It also trains land managers on how to conduct cost-effective mine assessment and closure to protect both bats and people.

The Hladysz Rock Tester was developed at the South Dakota School of Mines as a portable rock strength tester. The hand held device is placed against a rock surface and struck by a hammer. The impacted force causes a steel ball in the device nose piece to indent the rock and simultaneously indent a standard steel bar also contained in the nose piece. By comparing the two indented diameters the compressive strength of the rock can be calculated using laboratory determined correlation coefficients.

Microorganisms have been widely used for hydrometallurgical operation and effluent treatments(Smith, et. al., 1991a; Gadd, et. al., 1986; Darnall, 1986; Paponettis, et. al., 1991; Mihaylov, et. al., 1991; Rusin, et. al., 1991; Noble, et. al., 1991; Yang, et. al., 1991). In recent years there is a growing interest in using microorganism for flocculation of minerals fines and flotation collector (Smith, et. al., 1991b, 1991c; Misra, et. al., 1991a, 1991b, 1992a, 1992b). It is envisioned that the utilization of nonpathogenic microorganism and/or extracellular surfactant derived from microorganism as a flotation collector will replace some of the environmentally toxic flotation collectors and at the sometime improve flotation efficiency. The selection screening, and judicious selection of appropriate microorganism as flotation collector has been a challenge to process engineers. Over the past five years, continued research at the University of Nevada has shown that certain microorganism Mycobacterium phlei (M. phlei) can be a good flocculating agent and has potential to be used as a flotation collector (Dubel, et. al., 1992; Misra, et. al., 1991a, 1991b, 1992a, 1992b; Smith, et. al., 1991d; Chen, et. al., 1992a, 1992b)).

Many rock sass classification systems exist' to assist the engineer in assessing the rock support requirements for underground design. Our ongoing research in this area is directed at attempting to utilize the fractal dimension and the acoustic emission' response of the tuffs at Yucca Mountain, Nevada to further aid in rock mass classification. The Topopah Spring' member, the proposed nuclear waste horizon, is characterized by welded and partly welded tuffs, exhibiting a wide range in moduli, strength, porosity and degree of fracturing. Differentiating between the different' types of porosity can be extremely difficult if not impossible. An attempt was made to correlate the acoustic emission response with the porosity of the sample. Events and the peak amplitude may offer a means-to distinguish between, fracture porosity and pore porosity. In addition-, fractal dimension were calculated for several fractures in densely welded tuffs. Two techniques for calculating fractal dimension were-applied' to describe-fracture geometry and roughness. Fractures in-welded-tuff were-found to be relatively smooth.

"The Cityringen project foresees the construction of a new circular metro line in and around the city center of Copenhagen. Both drives, the north and the south one, required the TBMs to be equipped in order to cope with contaminated water table and soil. The north drive mined in water contaminated with chlorinated compounds, including chloroform and vinyl chloride, while the south TBMs excavated in a highly benzene contaminated area, becoming the first TBMs to complete such a challenge. Despite the pollution and the stricter operative procedures, the production has been extremely successful with record up to 520 m in one month and 32 m in one day. 1 INTRODUCTION The Cityringen is an extension of the existing metro line. The 15 km long twin tunnels will form a new circular line with 21 new stations (17 + 4 crossovers). When finished it will interchange with the existing metro, rail and bus infrastructure at key locations around town, taking 90% of Copenhagen citizen at less the 600m from a metro station (Figure 1). The Contract has been awarded in April 2011 to the Copenhagen Metro Team (CMT), a joint venture between the Italian companies Salini Impregilo, Tecnimont and Seli SpA. Tunnels are being excavated with 4 Seli-Kawasaki EPB TBMs, two of which manufactured in Denmark by Seli Tunneling Denmark ApS, which is also operating them. At the moment this article is written 50% of the tunnels have been completed and over 40% handed over for the electromechanical works. Seli Tunnelling Denmark is a Danish company constituted in 2012 as a subsidiary of Seli SpA for this project and subsequently acquired by the Salini Impregilo Group in 2015."

"For his pioneering contributions to the understanding of the geology of porphyry copper systems" Recipient Of The 1997 D. C. Jackling Award SPENCER R. TITLEY Introduction The subject of this lecture, a late century perspective on porphyry copper geology, is one of current interest and importance as the search for these ores remains intense. It is presented in the belief that an appreciation of our present understanding of the subject requires it to be viewed historically, thus providing a basis for evaluating appropriate directions for continued study. At the outset, it is important to note that the technology of mining and extractive metallurgy has developed ore from these low grade orebodies, starting with D. C. Jackling, and has continued to create them as copper grade and price have diminished. But the continued search for them is a geological problem that responds to growing expectations of people and societies; exploration based upon ever increasing knowledge of the habits of the ores has been very successful. This is the story of evolution of geological thought and practice in porphyry ore search across an interval of time beginning with the bulk mining of "low grade" copper ores at Bingham and ending with late Century concepts. "How did we get here?" The lecture concerns the ideas of many different people. The ideas and events discussed reflect a bias on North American thought, where the great low grade orebodies were first recognized as such and where many of the basic geological ideas were developed. A very great number of geologists have contributed to this understanding. In no sense is it meant to minimize the contributions to the story that have evolved in the study and mining of ores of the Andes, whose development and expansion has been nearly synchronous with that in North America - nor to minimized comparable contributions made in the late century from studies of the newer discoveries of deposits in other regions, especially the southwestern Pacific regions. In expansion of this topic, I have found that many important concepts are marked by appropriate publication but some are not, or I have not been able to discover documentation. Many notions appear to have become conventional knowledge without publication, mostly being geological viewpoints developed synchronously from similar observation. Thus, apologies are extended in advance to those whose work I have might have missed and to those unknown to me whose unpublished ideas may have seeped into the pool of common knowledge without appropriate recognition. The analysis here addresses events of two time segments, an older one extending from the developments at Bingham in the early 1900s through the Second World War, ending about 1950: the second period extends from that time to the present. This separation is seen in Figure 1, which traces numbers of publications through the period as extracted from some 700 publications, again with a North American bias, from an annotated bibliography of porphyry copper geology in preparation. During the early period, exploration was "immature" in North America, that is, geologists looked for new districts and sites of the deposits. Outcrops were sought that carried the signatures of former mineralization and regional controls related to structural geology were closely studied. In the later period, North American exploration had "matured" into a study of districts, rather than a search for them. As the studies of these ores intensified during the younger period concommitant with increasing demands for the metal, they did so with a broadened understanding of some habits of occurrence, of hydrothermal alteration, mineral zoning, petrology, and geochemical and geophysical signatures. The aim of this research is the study of the WHIMS parameters on the improving process of a local (DD: Djebel Debbagh, East of Algeria) kaolin. The obtained results of performed XRF, SEM, and XRD characterization showed that this local material is an alumino-silicate containing kaolinite and halloysite with MnO and Fe2O3 impurities (respectively 39.30% and 34.67% alumina and 38.18% and 39.70% silica in both samples (DD2 and DD3). After homogenization, crushing, and milling, a multiparameters factorial experimentation (grain sizes, intensity, and dimension of matrix balls) showed that WHIMS is an effective process to improve the quality of this kaolin, mainly: removing their impurities. Dimensions of matrix balls (Db) = 2 cm, intensity of the applied magnetic field (I) = 1.5 T, and grain sizes (Dp) = > 100 < 250 μm) are the optimal values to reach 91.06% for manganese and 93.45% for iron as removing yield. The statistical analysis of these results sorted the investigation parameters and showed that Db has the highest and most significant influence on the recovery of iron and manganese particles. The magnetic field intensity (I) has a less important influence while the grain size has an average influence (positive on the iron recovery but a negative one on the recovery of manganese).

Magnesium is listed as a key critical raw material in a report by the European Commission that evaluated raw materials based on supply risk versus economic importance [1]. It has extraordinary properties, such as nontoxicity, inertness, high melting point, stability, low weight, chemical resistance, electrical insulation, optical transparency, corrosion-resistant behavior and refractory nature. It is widely used in the areas of agriculture; the environment, for antibacterial and water-purification purposes; electronics; automotive; drug delivery; ceramics; construction, as filler in brick; and concrete production, in the forms of magnesium oxychloride and magnesium oxysulfate. Magnesium oxide (MgO) particles can be produced through the calcination of magnesite ore at different calcination conditions depending on the desired quality of the product, classified as fused (2,800 °C), dead-burned (>1,400 °C), hard-burned (1,000–1,400 °C), or light-burned MgO (700–1,000 °C) [2]. However, the global availability of magnesite ore is limited.

Lafarge Corporation&apos;s Texas Quarry, in Baltimore MD, achieved a substantial expansion of pit reserves by removing an inactive underground mine. The day lighting program, designed, and completed in 1997, open pit mined more than 400 meters of room and pillar workings which were originally developed to recover high brightness Calcium Carbonate. The project proved to be a challenge throughout its course as the pit plan was modified and successful daylighting techniques were developed to remove the mine without adversely affecting the safety of the operation, quality of the stone recovered, or negatively impacting the surrounding community. The design parameters and techniques developed and implemented at Texas may prove of interest to other operators as they are faced with daylighting opportunities. This article will detail the challenges we faced and the solutions which made the project a success.

The Crandon massive sulfide deposit Forest County, Wisconsin, was discovered by Exxon Minerals Company, U.S.A., in July 1975. Announced estimated in-place reserves are 62 M metric tons (70 million short tons), grading about 5% zinc and 1% copper. The reserves are evenly divided between massive sulfide are and stringer sulfide ore. The sulfide body is associated with Precambrian felsic pyroclastic rocks, and it is overlain by intermediate volcanic rocks and their derived sedimentary rocks. These rocks were subjected to greenschist facies metamorphism and were tilted to a near-vertical attitude. Geologic observations indicate a submarine-volcanic-exhalative origin for this deposit.
