The vertical stirring mill’s fine grinding equipment is affected by the operating conditions during the grinding process. The grinding media has a great influence on the energy consumption and particle size distribution. This paper investigates the fine grinding performance of nano-ceramic balls and steel balls of the same weight for magnetite by a wet grinding process in a vertical stirring mill, where 15 mm nano-ceramic balls and 12 mm steel balls are used as grinding media to carry out batch grinding tests. We have observed that the newly qualified particle content of the nano-ceramic balls is higher than steel balls of the same weight at the same specific energy. The reason may be the advantage of a greater surface area and volume filling rate with the nano-ceramic balls. Moreover, the specific energy of nanoceramic balls is less than steel balls of the same weight under the same grinding fineness. In addition, energy efficiency indicates that the nano-ceramic ball has a higher energy efficiency than a steel ball of the same weight. This is due to the light bulk density of nano-ceramic balls. The application of a nanoceramic ball in a vertical stirring mill will improve iron ore grinding performance. "Low-cost calcium lignosulphonate (CL), which is a byproduct of the wood pulping industry, was investigated as a potential binder during laboratoryscale pelletization of inertinite-rich high-ash coal fines from the Highveld Coalfield of South Africa. Coal-binder mixtures containing between 1 and 15% calcium lignosulphonate were prepared, pressed, and ultimate, proximate, porosity, XRD, and XRF analyses obtained. It was found that increased pressure during pelletization results in increased attractive forces, due to increased interparticle contact areas. FTIR analysis showed that chemical interactions occur between coal fines and the binder, as evidenced by the formation of new C-O ether-type bonds. The presence of moisture during pelletization enhanced surfactant activity of the binder. Chemical interactions between the coal and the binder seem to be mainly electrostatic, driven by Ca2+ from the calcium lignosulphonate, which may act as a bridge between the anionic parts of the binder and the surface of the coal. IntroductionCoal has over the years remained South Africa’s major energy source, with over 90% of the country’s electricity being produced via coal-fired processes (Arndt et al., 2016). Sasol’s coal conversion technology alone provides more than 40% of South Africa’s liquid fuel requirements (van Dyk, Keyser, and Coertzen, 2006). The production of high-grade coal requires the processing of run-of-mine (ROM) resources by a combination of processes which include crushing, screening, and washing (Radloff, Kirsten, and Anderson, 2003). These processes result in the generation of coal fines (< 0.5 mm) which, until recently, have been discarded into slimes dams (le Roux, Campbell, and Smit, 2012). Several issues are associated with slimes dams, among which are the costs of transportation of these fines from the place of origin to the discard point (often a considerable distance), and the potential environmental effects due to seepage of toxic materials into surrounding ecosystems (Clausen, 1973).Consequently, utilization of these coal fines is an area of great interest. Mechanical densification of fine coal by means of pelletization and/or briquetting to larger sizes for use in technologies that require lump coal, such as chain-grate stokers and fixed-bed gasifiers, has been shown not only to reduce environmental risks (Mangena et al., 2004), but also to significantly reduce storage and transportation costs (Mani et al., 2001). Pelletization is the process by which solid particles are consolidated into uniform, usually hard, impact-resistant agglomerates, rendering them useful as a fuel with sufficient calorific value for domestic and industrial utilization (Finney, Sharifi, and Swithenbank, 2009)."

"SynopsisThis paper assesses the effectiveness of the Mine Occupational Health and Safety Leading Practice Adoption System (MOSH) and its potential to improve mine health and safety in South African mines. Developed by the Chamber of Mines, which represents the majority of the country&apos;s large scale mining employers, MOSH was devised to accelerate progress towards achieving health and safety milestones, which were set by tripartite agreement in 2003. The paper documents and builds on the findings of a study conducted by the Centre for Sustainability in Mining and Industry (CSMI) in 2011 that evaluated MOSH strategy, structures, and process of implementation.The study found that MOSH operated across the mining sector, was directed and dominated by experts and, despite best efforts to include other stakeholders, was led by employers. Statutory worker health and safety representatives and structures were not integrated into the complex change process developed by MOSH. The Mine Health and Safety Inspectorate (MHSI) and organized labour were ambivalent about direct involvement in MOSH and preferred regulatory measures to enforce the participation of mines. MOSH interventions were not targeted at mines with a poor health and safety record, and MOSH lacked a baseline from which to track impacts on sector-wide health and safety performance. The leading practices most widely adopted by mines were designed to improve, rather than fundamentally alter, existing practice. Although the depth of engagement with MOSH among stakeholders and on mine sites varied, mining companies, labour representatives, and the Mine Health and Safety Inspectorate (MHSI) saw the programme as significant.IntroductionIn 2011, the Chamber of Mines commissioned the Centre for Sustainability in Mining and Industry (CSMI) to evaluate the progress and effectiveness of the rollout of the Mine Occupational Health and Safety Leading Practice Adoption System (MOSH). CSMI, based in the School of Mining Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand, is an independent research centre conducting health and safety research relevant to all major stakeholders in the mining sector. The purpose of the evaluation was to identify the factors that enabled or hampered the adoption of new technologies or practices. The timing of the evaluation, two years before the deadline for the 2013 safety and health milestones, allowed time for adjustments to be made. This paper summarizes the results of the evaluation and includes further analysis and discussion of the nature of the programme and the conditions that act to advance it or it hold back."

Most structures are designed so that the possibility of failure is eliminated. However, some degree of failure in the rock around deep mine excavations is inevitable if mining operations are continued. The presence of failed rock constitutes a hazard the magnitude of which can be predicted by computer models from calculations of the energy change per unit area mined in stopes, or the field stress around service excavations. Empirical relationships between these calculable quantities and the incidence of rock failures and delays associated with them have been established. Experiments on the computer using different layouts enable the mining engineer to select the least hazardous of otherwise acceptable alternatives, and to predict the incidence of damage ahead of actual mining, so that appropriate measures to maintain an adequate degree of safety and productivity can be planned in advance.

Lifelong development of skills and knowledge of mining professionals has been recognised worldwide as a challenge for the development of a sustainable mining sector. Practical training and learning over the mine value chain are among the key components of this knowledge building. However, the number of available mining sites for continuous education in real-life conditions is limited; also the specifications for practical training are not clearly defined. The project MINETRAIN was developed to (i) evaluate the potential of the shortly-closing Pyhäsalmi Mine, in Finland, as an educational and training underground facility, and thus, prolong the utility of the existing modern mine site, and to (ii) develop and test practical training programs for mining and mining industry related professionals. Pyhäsalmi facilities enable training among all disciplines related to the overall mine value chain and hence, the project has potential in providing education for sustainable management of any phase of mining operations. The philosophy underpinning the MINETRAIN approach to mining activities is to assist the clients in minimising the technical and financial risks by providing a competitive and skilled personnel asset while optimising the value drivers in their operations. As a first major step of the project, a pilot training course, involving basic-level online theory and hands-on training at the Pyhäsalmi mine site, was undertaken in summer 2019. Feedback from the pilot test group of mining professionals has proved to be very positive. The comments from the participants strongly emphasised the added value of the practical onsite training for improved understanding in the large scale picture of mining on the entire value chain. As a second phase of the project, a new test course was launched in June 2020. The second MINETRAIN course focuses on new technologies and digitisation in mining. Most coal plants must run under conditions of varying feed conditions or are asked to produce qualities different from that used in the design. This can cause overloaded conditions as the ?bottlenecks? within the plant, depending on plant operation or as the feed changes. During plant design, geological information can be used to determine washability envelopes and blends that may be expected. Historical data can also be used to develop a size distribution envelope as well as to assign reasonable models for each of the unit processes. In operation, a plant can be sampled to determine changes and to refine process models. The information obtained can then be used in an accurate simulation to define how the plant can deal with the changing environment. This paper uses Limn: The Flowsheet Processor to simulate the coal plant in detail and will produce an accurate model, in terms of equipment sizing as well as water, medium, and solids balance, for each change in feed condition. It will show examples of running the simulation through complete density and size ranges and will determine the equipment required to address each part of the performance envelope.

Conventional PGM matte smelting requires the presence of a certain quantity of base metal sulphides in order to collect the platinum group metals in a molten sulphidic matte phase in the furnace. Furthermore, the quantity of chromium oxide in the feed materials is controlled in order to avoid the build-up of high-melting chromite spinels in the furnace. Mintek has developed a process for smelting difficult PGM-containing feed materials that contain low amounts of sulphur and/or high amounts of chromium oxide. A DC arc furnace is used to provide the appropriate conditions to generate an iron alloy that collects PGMs very effectively, leaving extremely low residual quantities of PGMs in the slag. Various feed materials have been treated successfully in furnace campaigns running at power levels up to 1.5 MW. The longest of these campaigns was run continuously for more than four months, treating more than two thousand tons of materials such as low-grade concentrates, revert tailings, and converter slag. The campaigns demonstrated the robustness and versatility of the process, and proved that it is possible to sustainably produce a PGM-containing alloy and discardable slags containing an average of less than 1.4 g/t of PGMs over the entire campaign. A high volume of slimes which are separated out during the mining of heavy mineral sands has a high environmental impact and results in great capital as well as operational expenses. The presence of clay minerals drastically increases the slimes volume that needs to be catered for due to its low settling capability as well as swelling characteristics. By adding coagulants in the form of cations and organics, one can improve the settling rate of the minerals as well as the degree of solid bed compaction. The addition of flocculant, which is currently used in industry to improve settling rate, is detrimental to solid bed compaction. By combining the cations and flocculant one can dramatically improve the solid bed compaction. This combination is, however, detrimental to the settling rate of kaolinite-rich slimes but improves the settling rate of smectite-rich slimes. Organics can also be used to produce a clear supernatant and improve the settling rate.

The CSense advanced process control (APC) solution?s main objective was to improve the stability of the pH in the first stage leach process thereby improving nickel and iron extraction efficiencies and reducing the base metal (BM) content in the platinum group metals (PGM) concentrate. By improving the stability of the control of the pH on the first stage leach it had the corresponding effect of improving the Ni extraction efficiency by 0.5% and the Fe extraction efficiency by 3.3%. The system relieved the operators of many decisions that were virtually impossible to make given the complex, variable and real-time nature of the processes in their charge. On the operational side, the operators understand the APC system and they trust it. Another benefit is the reduction in pH peaks in the autoclave, which can oxidize certain elements whereby they become difficult, if not impossible, to leach. These elements go right through the process and end up contaminating the PGM solids, with the result that the entire batch has to be recycled through a lengthy and costly processing pipeline.

Determination of the optimum production schedules over the life of a mine is a critical mechanism in open pit mine planning procedures. Long-term production scheduling is used to maximize the net present value of the project under technical, financial, and environmental constraints. Mathematical programming models are well suited for optimizing long-term production schedules of open pit mines. There are two approaches to solving long-term production problems: deterministic- and uncertainty- based approaches. Deterministic-based models are unable to deal with grade and geological uncertainties, which are two important sources of risk in mining industries. This may lead to discrepancies between actual production obtained by these algorithms and planning expectations. In this paper, a new binary integer programming model was developed for long-term production scheduling that incorporates geological uncertainty within the orebody. Then, traditional and uncertainty-based models are applied to an iron ore deposit. Results showed that the uncertainty-based approach yields more practical schedules than traditional approaches in terms of production targets.

Deep underground mines use refrigeration systems to provide a reasonably comfortable ambient environment to increase productivity and to maintain safety as a priority. Deep level gold mines maintain the environment at an acceptable temperature, i.e. 27°C. However, the increasing cost of doing so through refrigeration is becoming a significant factor in the economic viability of mines. This paper discusses of the important facet of energy losses in cooling reticulation systems, laying with the specific emphasis on the subject of chilled water transport pipe insulation and its thermo-dynamic relationships. Aspects relating to the deterioration of open cell-type insulation materials such as polyurethane/styrene foams and the use of Phenolic resins that have good fire retardation properties have been investigated. The thermal conductivities of these insulation media are good (meaning below 0.05 W/°C)However, they are known to be negatively influenced by water vapour ingress and vapour pressure differences that result in the ingress of water into the material by means of absorption, condensation, hygrospicity, permeability and capillary action, to name a few of many. The overall effect on mine cooling efficiency takes in the two forms: first by the loss of refrigeration or increased chill in the water temperature arriving in a given section and second, by a loss in transfer efficiency when the gap between the arriving water temperature and the actual air temperature decreases. Successful management of mining operations depend on the accurate and reliable measurement of performance as a monitoring instrument in a feedback and control loop. However, when changes are being considered, the probable effect of the change on bottom line results requires different measuring techniques incorporating an in depth understanding which can identify hot spots in the operation which exhibit strong sensitivity to change. The CSIR&apos;s Division of Mining Technology has therefore been devoting a considerable effort to the establishment of techniques which enable changes to be analysed in terms of their impact on the two key parameters describing mine performance, i.e. profitability and safety. This paper describes these techniques, outlines their application to some example situations and discusses planned enhancements. The first section of the paper addresses the profitability model, and this is followed by a section considering the mine safety model.

The present study investigates the feasibility of using some materials as start-up slags for the extraction of magnesium metal from Egyptian dolomite ores by the Magnethermic technique. The reduction of roasted dolomite (dolime) takes place in a closed evacuated electric arc furnace (small Magnetherm reactor) using ferrosilicon as a reducing agent and liquid start-up slag as a reduction bath under an inert atmosphere. The operational parameters affecting the stabilization of the start-up slag composition and the extraction of magnesium such as reducing agent stoichiometry, reduction temperature, and time were investigated. The dolomitic charge was in the form of sintered briquettes. The charge was reduced under an argon atmosphere in the Magnetherm reactor for constant period and constant temperature. The results showed that the clinker can be used as a start-up slag for the magnethermic process. Also, the optimum conditions for the extraction process were found at 2XSi stoichiometry to give maximum reduction of 80% after 15 minutes reduction time at a temperature of 1550°C. XRD and XRF measurements were used to determine the phases present and the extent of reduction of magnesium, respectively. The KX36 kimberlite was discovered using a high-resolution gradient aeromagnetic survey, with follow-up detailed ground geophysics and deflation soil sampling used to assess and prioritize the geophysical anomalies identified from the initial aeromagnetic survey. Prospect drilling intersected kimberlite in the first hole drilled on the KX36 anomaly. Preliminary evaluation has shown that KX36 is diamondiferous, and a more detailed evaluation and sampling programme is currently underway. The area around KX36 has been prospected by numerous companies over the last few decades, with sporadic kimberlite indicator mineral (KIM) recoveries in regional deflation sampling indicating the possible presence of kimberlites, but without sufficient resolution to ?home in? on specific targets. Previous (lower resolution) aeromagnetic surveys and soil sampling campaigns also did not define anomalies with sufficient detail to guide prospect drilling effectively. The discovery of KX36 highlights the prospectivity of areas of Botswana under deep Kalahari cover that have been explored previously. This paper describes experimental investigations into the reductive decomposition of arsenopyrite/pyrite (FeAsS/FeS2), a gold and silver bearing iron/arsenic sulphide using metallic iron powder. The main objective was to establish and experimentally confirm the thermodynamic and kinetic feasibility of reductively decomposing the sulphide matrix for precious metals recovery. In this context, cyanidation leach tests were conducted on the reductive leach residues. The arsenopyrite/pyrite flotation concentrate, mainly studied in the hydrochloric acid medium, decomposed through the non?oxidative chemical dissolution reaction and the reductive decomposition reaction for the arsenopyrite and pyrite components, respectively. Desulphurization levels below 65% were achieved at pH values below 0.15 and iron to concentrate ratios above 1, and the system was characterized by overall very slow kinetics. The reaction system had a direct linear relationship with iron to concentrate ratio and an inverse relationship with pH. An analysis of the pyrite/iron galvanic system showed that pyrite forms a partially inert cathodic surface on which the anodic dissolution of iron occurs, supported by the hydrogen evolution reaction. This phenomenon explained the low desulphurization levels and the mineral decomposition seemed to be restricted to the non?oxidative chemical dissolution reaction for the arsenopyrite component. The cyanide leach of the reductive leach residues showed very little improvement in gold recovery. The reductive leach process for arsenopyrite/pyrite has considerable limitations in terms of both desulphurization and precious metals liberation. On 23rd October, 1969, 54 members of the Institute set out at an early hour from Rand Airport in two chartered Dakota aircraft for a visit to the Hendrik Verwoerd Dam site. The weather was at the start rather unpromising but after passing Bloemfontein the overcast cleared and it turned into a glorious day for a most memorable visit. The Institute is indebted to U.C-Dumez-Borie Dams Limited, the main civil engineering contractors, and Mr J. D. McNamara their executive manager, for the very excellent arrangements made for this excursion. From the time the aircraft landed till a slightly belated departure the organisation of the extensive tours arranged for the parties was quite outstanding and a matter for congratulation to all concerned. At each of the many places visited there was a senior official to give an authoritative and comprehensive description of the work under his control. In addition the guides on the buses, loaned by the Department of Water Affairs, kept up an interesting running commentary throughout the day. A further much appreciated facet was the introduction of many of the experts on the site and a brief talk by each after an excellent lunch served at the recreation club. Each visitor also received a brochure with a progress report and a detailed site plan, with various sections highlighted in colour, and obviously prepared at the cost of much time and effort. The visit included tours of the large dolerite quarry, where some 150 000 tons of rock are removed each month, the 42 in. gyratory primary crusher, the secondary crushing and screening plant, the rod mill plant for sand production, and the automated blending and concrete batching plant. The transport of mixed concrete by &apos;silobuses&apos; to the 6 cu. yd buckets of four Blondin cableways, two of which are radially movable and two with buffing towers, and the placing of the concrete in the huge blocks of the wall was watched from a vantage point. The most interesting part of the visit was without a doubt the inspection of the wall itself and the explanations of the many intricasies of its design and care in construction, covering aspects such as positioning of galleys, interlocking of blocks, reinforcement, refrigeration, actual concrete placing, subsequent grouting, etc. Other points of interest were the very complicated design of the wall itself, the river diversion plans, with three stages of coffer dams, the spillways, and the very well cut penstock tunnels.

Information on rock stress is important for safe mining in seismically active ground. On a major gold mine, a few tens of crews are continuously conducting geological drilling with small pneumatic machines. However, stress measurements are not often carried out in South African deep-level gold mines. One of the reasons is the drilling diameter that overcoring requires, which is much larger than the diameters used in regular geological drilling, e.g. Boart Longyear Metre Eater, which drills AQ or BQ holes. Larger diameter holes result in slower drilling advance, more load in transportation and handling at sites, and higher cost. In order to enable overcoring in BX size (60 mm diameter), we modified the compact conical-ended borehole overcoring (CCBO) technique that has been suggested by International Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM) and was originally designed for NX drilling (76 mm diameter). With a single overcoring, the 3-D stress tensor can be determined. We tested this modified method at a depth of about 3 km at Moab Khotsong mine in South Africa. We worked with drilling crew who usually work at geological drilling with the Metre Eater. In January 2011, we tried using regular geological drilling tools (a sequence of a normal BX bit, reamer, and rod) without success. In August and September 2011, introducing stabilizers and thin BX bits, we succeeded. We could complete a cycle of procedures necessary for an overcoring, including shaping the borehole-end conically, glueing a 16-element strain cell, and overcoring, within 2.5 hours. Only 10 cm overcoring is needed, which increases the chance of successful overcoring in heavily fractured conditions. This modified method is suitable for up-dip holes to depths of 10-15 m from tunnels, and has the potential to be widely used at the initial stage of geological exploration drilling at many localities.
