Properties of catalysts prepared from intermetallic compound precursors were investigated by the Bureau of Mines as part of its mission to decrease U.S. dependence on foreign sources for scarce catalytic materials, such as nickel, cobalt, and chromium. Methods were developed whereby catalysts with surface areas of 30 to 40 m2/g were prepared from intermetallic compounds. Activity of these catalysts for the methanation reaction and methanol synthesis was deter-mined using a fixed-bed, single-pass, flow-through reactor. Catalysts prepared from rare-earth-nickel intermetallics had specific activity for methanation that was five times greater than that of commercial catalysts and were equal to or better than commercial catalysts with regard to sulfur tolerance. Under identical reaction conditions, catalysts prepared from thorium-copper intermetallics produced more than 10 times as much methanol as a commercial low-pressure catalyst and exhibited a high degree of catalytic stability.

To produce industrial-grade titanium castings by processes that are nonpolluting and lower cost than the currently used rammed-graphite process. Approach Foundry-grade zircon and olivine sands, bonded by waterglass or bentonite, are used to make shell or rammed molds which require relatively low-drying temperatures and do not generate noxious fumes during drying or casting. Procedures Three separate processes have been developed which meet the stated pollution and cost goals. These are: 1. Waterglass-bonded rammed zircon or olivine sand molds are dried at 480°F, zirconia washed, redried, and used in an inductoslag or skull-casting furnace. 2. Waterglass-bonded zircon or olivine sand shell molds are formed at 560°F, cured at 620°F, zirconia washed, dried at 480°F. and used in an inductoslag furnace. 3. Rammed zircon and olivine sand molds are bonded with western bentonite, zirconia washed, dried at 980°F, and used in an inductoslag or skull-casting furnace.

Overexposure to airborne respirable crystalline silica dust can cause disabling or fatal respiratory disease, and mine worker exposure to silica dust continues to be an ongoing occupational health concern. Exposures of surface coal mine rock drillers to respirable crystalline silica are of particular concern. On surface coal mine drills, bailing air flushes the cuttings out of the drill hole. Conveyor belting material is typically used to fabricate a shroud around the drill deck in an effort to contain the drill dust so that it can be captured by a collector. Dust leakage from the drill shroud is usually the worst dust source problem on most drills. The focus of this work is drill shroud dust leakage and the relationships of various drill parameters on this leakage. Experimental data were obtained and used in combination with dimensional analysis to establish these relationships. In general, it is found that airborne respirable dust (ARD) concentrations vary in a direct relationship with shroud leakage area and in an inverse relationship with drill deck cross sectional area and shroud height. This work expands the testing and dimensional analysis previously reported for collector/bailing air flow ratios ranging from 2:1 to 4:1 to include ratios approaching 1:1. A semi empirical mathematical model has been developed and expanded to describe ARD generation on surface coal mine drills. Geometric parameters included are drill deck height and cross sectional area, shroud leakage associated with the deck shroud, and the operational parameters of bailing airflow and dust collector airflow. The relationships can be described by logarithmic functions and yield predictive ARD values, which fall in the range measured on operating drills for collector/bailing air flow ratios greater than 2. However, at values of collector/bailing air flow ratios of approximately 1.1, the amount of ARD shows minimal response, if any, to drill deck shroud improvements that do not result in near perfect seals. This is a condition that can occur in actual operation and is a substantially different result than previously expected and reported. Application of these results should provide mine operators with sufficient information to determine (1) the relative magnitude of their dust emissions, (2) where they should focus their efforts to reduce ARD emissions and (3) the improvement they could reasonably expect to achieve. Given that exposures of surface coal mine rock drillers to respirable crystalline silica are of particular concern, substantial reductions of airborne silica dust during drilling may be estimated and achieved through use of the analysis presented. Develop a metal substitute which is more plentiful and less expensive than the metals currently being used in high performance, permanent magnets, while maintaining the quality of the magnet. The New Alloy The rare-earth metal used in most high performance magnets is samarium, an expensive metal of limited availability. Cobalt is also used in high performance magnets, but supplies of this metal also are limited because it is not domestically mined and must be imported. The Bureau of Mines embarked on research to find a less costly domestic: metal source for use in industrial magnets. The alloy found most promising consists of mischmetal, a relatively abundant, naturally occurring mixture of rare-earths, which can be used as a replacement for samarium. Additives of copper, magnesium and iron used in combination with mischmetal aid in replacing some of the cobalt needed for the magnets.

The American public has at all times been prone to discuss important questions that call for consideration and adjustment. Debatable subjects upon which sides may be taken always receive unusual prominence, but other questions equally important may be neglected. The real "paramount issue," calling for remedial action, is the ever-increasing number of deaths caused by preventable accidents. This matter demands the attention of the entire American people; the importance of accident prevention can not be overemphasized, and in many phases of American life, especially among the mining and allied industries, far too little real attention has been given the importance of conserving life and limb by accident prevention. ACCIDENTS COMPARED TO WAR AS A CAUSE OF DEATH Harry T. Hoffman, Wyoming labor commissioner, writes the following: It is one of the peculiar complexes of this rapidly moving age that we all stand aghast at the horrors of war and view with appar- ent indifference the greater havoc of industrial peace. Did you ever stop to think that approximately twice as many people were killed by accidents in the United States in 1929, as there were American soldiers killed in the entire period of the World War? Every employer and every worker should be thoroughly aroused over the tremendous toll levied against industrial forces by accidents which are largely preventable and develop a faith in safety efforts that will fire them with a zeal as pronounced as that of their religion or their patriotism. Let us remember safety-first to the end that the workman shall live to enjoy the fruits of his labor; that his mother shall have the comfort of his arm in her age; that his wife shall not be untimely a widow; that his children shall have a father; that crip- ples and helpless wrecks who were strong men shall no longer be a by-product of industry.

The prolonged exposure of equipment operators to shock and whole-body vibration (WBV) IS linked to cumulative back, neck, and abdominal disorders. In low-coal mines, space restrictions make seat suspensions difficult to use in isolating operators from shock and WBV. Researchers at NIOSH, Pittsburgh Research Laboratory, are responding to these issues by investigating viscoelastic foams. For the full-load case. an ergonomic seat with viscoelastic foams isolated the shuttle car operator from shock at 15 Hz. Researchers used results from additional foam testing with an analytical model to identify viscoelastic foams that provide shock isolation at a frequency below 5 Hz.

California's coal resources are estimated to be 100 million tons, of which 50 percent is lignite, 40 percent subbituminous, and 10 percent bituminous. The occurrence of coal in California is rather limited and is restricted generally to the foothill regions of the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Significant quantities of coal have been mined in five areas: Ione in Amador County, Alberhill in Riverside County, Stone Canyon in Monterey County, CorralHollow in Alarneda County, and Mount Diablo in Contra Costa County. Most of the coal was rnined in the early 1900s and was used locally for fuel. Current mining operations are located in Amador County near the city of Ione. The two producing mines supply fuel to a mine-mouth co-generation power plant. The fuel coal is processed prior to burning to extract montan wax. Because California does not have primacy, coal mining in the state is regulated by the Office of Surface Mining's Albuquerque, New Mexico, Field Office.

"Fatal accidents at coal mines throughout the United States killed 234 employees during January 1924, according to reports from State mine inspectors to the Bureau of Mines of the Department of the Interior, Included in the number of fatalities are 68 deaths caused by two explosions during the month, one explosion occurring in a mine at Johnson City, Ill., and causing 32 deaths, and the other in a mine at Shanktown, Pa., and causing 36 deaths. The fatality rate for the month was 3.94 per million tons, based on a production of 59,435,000 tons of coals In January 1923 the fatality rate was 3.52, based on 206 deaths and an output of 58,458,000 tons.Bituminous mines in all States reported 202 fatal accidents, the production being 51,170,000 tons., and the fatality rate being 3.92, as compared with 3.28 for January last year, For the anthracite mines in Pennsylvania, the reports covered 32 fatalities, which, on the month's output of 7,955,000 tons, indicated a fatality rate of 4.02 per million tons, as against 4.89 for January 1923.As compared with January 1923, the reports for January of the present year indicated lower fatality rates per million tons for all of the main causes of accidents except explosions. For falls of roof and coal, the fatality rate per million tons declined from 1.85 in January 1923 to 1,68 in January 1924; for haulage accidents the rate declined from 0.62 to 0.42; for explosives, from 0.19 to 0.12; for electricity, from 0.12 to 0.07. Bulk carriers, freighters, and tankers are the three classes of seagoing vessels engaged in transporting mineral commodities. However, vessels in these classes are not exclusively devoted to mineral commodity transport. Bulk carriers move considerable tonnages of agricultural products as well as crude minerals, their concentrates, mineral fertilizers, and the like. Freighters, owing to their great variety, can be devoted wholly to hauling mineral products or wholly to nonmineral goods, as well as carrying mixed mineral commodities and nonmineral commodities. They include general cargo ships, full container ships, partial container ships, roll-on/roll-offships, and barge carriers. Tankers, although largely engaged in moving crude oil and refinery products, also transport liquid chemicals, molasses, wine, liquefied natural gas, and other fluids. Although physical characteristics of vessels such as size, draft, crew requirements, type of propulsion system, ratio of gross tonnage to cargo tonnage, and fuel costs have undeniable influences on shipping industry performance, problems of and changes in the quantity and types of materials moved also significantly affect the shipping sector of the world economy, and thus have a bearing on the minerals sector of that aggregate. Unfortunately, comprehensive global data reflecting changes in these critical variables are not published.

Experiments were undertaken to evaluate the flammability of typical noise abatement materials used to line the cab interior of mobile mining equipment. The experiments were conducted using three different experimental configurations: 1. A ventilated tunnel test. 2. A full-size cab test where the interior surfaces were lined with the sample material and then ignited near the floor using a methane-air burner. 3. Standard ASTM E-162 tests using a radiant panel test apparatus. This paper describes the tests and presents the results obtained for 15 to 20 different materials of various chemical compositions and thickness. With one exception, materials that did not exhibit flame spread in the tunnel test also performed well in the full-scale cab test. All materials that had passed only a small-scale flammability test, such as SAE J369, failed dramatically in all three of the above test configurations. With one exception, all materials that performed well in the full-scale cab test had flame spread indices < 25, based upon the ASTM E-162 results. The lone exception had an ASTM E-162 flame spread index of 68. With regard to samples that failed the full-scale cab test, the carbon monoxide levels within the cab reached lethal concentrations in the range of 1.8% to 3.8% within 2 minutes from ignition of the sample—dramatically illustrating the severe fire environment that can result within the cab space.

Reduce dust exposure of longwall shearer operators by keeping them upwind of the primary cutting drum. Approach Use a different coal cutting sequence by cutting from headgate-to-tailgate, making the cleanup pass from tail-gate-to-headgate. How It Works The cutting action of the shearer drum is usually the primary source of respirable dust at longwall shearer faces. Dust exposure of the shearer operator is deter-mined by his position relative to the lead drum, which is normally in the raised position taking a full sump. On long-wall faces where the cut pass is taken from tail-to-head, against the primary airflow, the shearer operators must remain at their controls, on the return-air-side of the primary dust source, to maintain proper control. A simple method to lower shearer operators&apos; dust exposures is to extract the primary coal from head-to-tail, thus positioning the operators up-wind of the lead cutting drum. The bottom coal is then cut, and the floor cleaned by the trailing drum during the tail-to-head cleanup pass. This sequence places the primary dust source, the cutting action of the shearer drums, on the return-air side of both shearer operators, except when cutting out at the longwall headgate.

A brief description is given of various Bureau of Mines research activities that have begun since July 1974 and are not being reported on by others at the Third West Virginia University (WVU) Conference on Coal Mine Electrotechnology. An essential feature of the various projects is that they are pragmatic. The projects are applied research and are carried out both by the Bureau in-house research group and by other research groups through contract research. Projects have been directed toward wired-type communications with a special effort to modify the wired systems so as to be more effectively used. The projects are in three groups: Pager phone systems, trolley line phone systems, and guided-wire wireless communications. Also, a brief sketch is given of research that is essential for further developments in mine communications. From the early results of these various projects, the Bureau has good reason to project that there will be improved performance of existing communication systems and that communications will be extended to other individuals working in areas that are excluded from present mine communication systems.

To rapidly and dependably locate shorts and opens in mining equipment power cables. Approach: The approximate locations of faults are found using a sound pulse echo, then the faults are exactly located with one of two probes. How It Works: To approximately locate u fault in shielded or unshielded cable, the cable is disconnected from the mine power center, and connected to the sound pulse generator. The generator is also connected to the ground conductor of the cable. When the generator is energized, electrical pulses are transmitted, and each moves along the conductor until it reaches a fault. When a pulse reaches the fault an echo returns to the instrument, either a positive pulse if the fault is an open, or a negative pulse if the fault is a short. See Figure 1. The further along the cable the first fault is from the instrument, the longer it takes for the echo to return. The instrument automatically measures the time and calculates the distance. The distance in feet is shown on an illuminated digital display.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a series of experiments to determine the influence of exhaust rebreathing on emissions from various gasoline and diesel engines. Tests were conducted that simulated operation of engines in nonventilated spaces as well as in spaces with partially restricted ventilation. Results of these tests showed that exhaust rebreathing can have a marked effect on exhaust emissions and thus on the composition of the air in the working space. For the case of restricted ventilation, unacceptably high (greater than 50 ppm) levels of CO in the air of the working space resulted from exhaust rebreathing rates as low as 8 pct exhaust in the engine&apos;s intake. Operation in a nonventilated space resulted in highly critical CO levels (fatal in a few minutes) at times corresponding to 1 to 3 pounds of fuel consumed per 1,000 cu ft of space. Tests involving spaces of various sizes showed that volume of the air space [per se] is not important--the primary variable is fuel consumed per unit volume of air space.

Hand portable truck axle scales were purchased from the Martin¬Decker Company, Santa Ana, California, for weighing the rubber-tired mine shuttle cars. The scales consisted of two hydraulic load-pads, measuring 4" thick, and 21" long by 13" wide at the pad surface and one totallizer-dial indicator unit. The development of a technique to install the scales effectively for shuttle car-weighing followed an evolutionary process. The setup which finally proved to be effective entailed countersinking and level¬ling the load pads in the floor on the shuttle car trackway such that the tops of the pads were three inches below the floor level. A plat¬form consisting of two braced side-by-side 3" x 8" lumber planks was made. The platform was placed across the load pads with six inches of overlap on each side to provide room for imperfect tracking of the shuttle car. Additionally, 3" x 8" lumber planks were imbedded across the runway immediately behind and ahead of the platform. These auxili¬ary planks were firmly braced into the floor by vertical posts or jacks set against the roof; the planks constituted a stable approach platform to enable the shuttle car to roll unimpeded onto the scale platform in either direction of travel. Figure 22 shows this arrangement in detail. The setup of the scales was done during non-production hours prior to the first working shift of the week. This task took seven to twelve hours with two men. During the actual weighing experiment, the following limitations were realized. 1. One of the more pressing engineering problems for deep longwall mines in the Southern Appalachian Basin is to design longwall systems that will eliminate catastrophic coal pillar failure from the working environment. The purpose of this study is to quantify the behavior of a particular size abutment pillar prone to burst or bump. Because the 24.4-111 (80-ft) square abutment study pillar is within the pillar size commonly used in this region, understanding the behavior of this pillar should aid in future efforts to design optimum mining strategies. This research has attempted to construct the pillar stress and roof-to-floor convergence profiles in order to evaluate the ultimate strength, deformation modulus, visco-elastic deformation, and violent failure characteristics of the pillar during longwall mining. This information reflects the overriding influence of the local geologic characteristics on bursts, provides the field measurements needed to verify concurrent modeling studies, and suggest some basic mechanisms associated with the coal pillar bursts discussed in this paper.

To provide for continuous remote sensing of carbon monoxide (CO) in underground mines. The Approach A transducer module has been developed as a wall-mounted, continuously operating instrument that will measure ambient levels of CO, and produce a signal that is proportional to the concentration.

In the course of investigation now in progress by the Bureau of Mines into the nature of " gum forming" constituents of gasoline , several gasolines and other petroleum products were heated in a small bomb , and pressures of considerable magnitude were developed . As the Bureau has received many inquiries for data showing the pressure that may be developed in a still when gasoline or other oil is subjected to elevated temperatures , it was thought advisable to record the pressures observed at various temperatures in the course of this work . data were merely a by- product of the main investigation . These Gasoline and similar products are very complex mixtures , and it is difficult to determine accurately the true vapor pressures , hence the vapor pressures of the oils used in these tests have not been studied in detail , but the data obtained may be taken as representative of the pressure- temperature relations of the various oils in commercial work.

The Bureau of Mines has been carrying on an extensive diamond- drilling program during the past 7 years on deposits of strategic and critical minerals . Often the project reports and the drill-hole logs describe the findings only in terms of the mineral being sought at the time . Then , too , results may not always be interpreted alike by several mining engineers , and the cores therefore provide a permanent tangible record to complement the project reports . The cores from projects in the eastern divisions are being stored at the Mount Weather Testing Adit . Core from a representative hole ( or skeletonized sections from several holes , if these are more representative ) is selected at each project and shipped to Mount Weather for permanent storage . At the Testing Adit an underground room was prepared and storage racks were installed . Wooden core trays designed to accommodate cores of various sizes were purchased .
