The recovery of phosphate rack from the ores in the land-pebble district of Florida is a simple washing and screening operation. In the gashing plants coarse phosphate only is saved. Log-Washer overflows and screen-undersize products containing an appreciable content of fine phosphate are discarded. The phosphate grains in the material discharged to waste are generally finer in size than the mesh--14 to 20 mesh or 0.346 to 0.03 inch--of the finest screen in the washer. The operators state that the washers ordinarily recover from 50 to 60 per cent of the phosphate content of the matrix mined. Any increase that can be effected in the recovery of phosphate would be of advantage to the industry and would conserve the mineral resources of the country. In considering possible methods that might increase the recovery obtained in phosphate-washing plants the application of flotation, if it could be successfully developed, seemed to warrant investigation.

"Introduction. The first short—flame explosives were made in the United States during the year 1902, then the mount was 11,300 pounds. In 1902 they were designated ""permissible explosives"", and were required to meet specific tests. By 1912 the total consumption thereof had increased to 24,630,000 pounds, equal to 5 per cent of the total quantity of all kinds of explosives produced in this country; while in 1922 the total was 43,429,000 Pounds, or 10 per cent of the production, and 18 per cent of the explosives used for the mining of coal.Each year the Bureau compiles statistics of explosives, one important object of this being to show the extent to which permissible explosives are replacing other classes of explosives in coal—mining operations, and the influence of such replacement in reducing the number of accidents caused by explosives in this class of mines. The consumption of permissible since 1916 has considerably exceeded the quantity of high explosives (dynamites, etc.) used in coal mines. While the increase in use of permissible is good, the replacement of other explosives therewith is not nearly as good as with be, considering the known general efficacy and safety of permissibles."

Highwall mining continues to grow in importance as a coal production method from U.S. surface mines. It may account for as much as 4% of the total U.S. coal production, according to one recent estimate. Analysis of Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) accident and injury statistics shows that, overall, highwall mining has maintained an admirable safety record. Its fatality and injury rates are comparable to those for other surface mining methods, and are significantly lower than those for underground mining. No mining method is risk free, however. Highwall mining injuries have been associated with handling materials, slips and falls, machinery, powered haulage, and other types of incidents. But perhaps the greatest risk, to both personnel and equipment, is from ground control. The two most significant ground control hazards are rock falls from the highwall and equipment entrapment underground. Highwall Stability Ensuring highwall stability through proper ground control engineering is of paramount importance to safe highwall mining operations. The only fatality to occur during the last five years at a highwall mining operation was due to highwall collapse. There have also been numerous near-misses, several of which have involved extensive damage to equipment. In the central Appalachians, where the majority of highwall mining occurs in the U.S., hillseams are the most prominent geologic structures that affect highwall stability. Hillseams (or mountain cracks) are near vertical fractures in the rock that are formed in response to natural weathering and erosion of hillsides. They extend hundreds of feet down from the surface. They typically run parallel to the hillside, but they can also extend across narrow points or ridge lines. The hazard arises when rock slabs that form along the hillseams detach and fall away from the highwall face (See Figure 1). [ ] Unfortunately, it is impossible to control the location of hillseams or reliably detect their presence within a highwall. There are, however, a number of measures that can be taken to minimize the risk of failure associated with hillseams: Planning-Most operators choose to skip those areas of the highwall where a prominent hillseam daylights (See Figure 2). Existence of such areas is known for several weeks in advance of highwall mining; therefore, planning engineers can adjust the layout of highwall mining panels to locate barrier pillars within areas of questionable highwall stability. [ ] Inspection and monitoring-Daily inspection of the benches above the active highwall mining area is a prudent precautionary measure. A crack in a bench immediately above a highwall miner is shown in Figure 3. Simple displacement monitors may be useful for detecting movement along cracks that may precede a significant life-threatening failure. New tools, such as slope monitoring radar, may also prove useful in detecting motion of the rock slopes above active highwall mining operations. Good blasting practice-Most surface coal miners in the central Appalachians use pre-splitting and the familiar halfbarrels are routinely seen throughout the pits. Shorter delays along the face and longer delays between rows can direct more of the blast force parallel to the face, potentially doing less damage to the wall rock. In addition to pre-splitting, decreasing the burden, spacing and charge weight in drill holes close to the highwall will also decrease damage to the wall rock. Decreasing the highwall slope angle-Decreasing the highwall slope angle from 90° (vertical) to 70°-80°, especially in areas of known hillseam concentration, could eliminate the hillseam hazard (See Figure 4). In 1999, 2,087 unplanned roof falls were reported from 841 mines. Nearly 55% of all mines reported at least one roof fall, and nearly 17% of the mines reported five or more falls. In order to investigate the variables that contribute to roof falls, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) compiled a national database of roof performance from 37 coal mines. Geotechnical factors and their effect on roof fall rates were compiled from over 1,500 miles of drivage. The factor that is the best predictor of roof fall rate is the Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR). For a low CMRR (#30), almost all cases have high roof fall rates. Conversely, high roof fall rates are rare for strong roof rocks (CMRR $ 60). Roof fall rates were also higher in deeper mines, probably because of greater stresses. Intersections were much more likely to fall than roadways, and four-way intersections were more prone to fall than three-way intersections. In a controlled comparison of the effect of increasing bolt length on roof fall rates, it was found that longer bolts reduced the roof fall rates in 11 of 13 cases. A relationship between the roof fall rate, the intersection span, and the CMRR was also found. Finally, a systematic method for tracking roof performance and geotechnical variables was demonstrated.

The Bureau of Mines investigated coal storage silos to determine how gassy coal must be for methane accumulations in a silo to become hazardous and where such accumulations are likely to occur. Methane concentrations were measured in the open space above the stored coal pile, in the pile, and in the reclaiming area. No methane layering was found in closed-top silos. Reclaiming areas were as gassy as the top part of the silos. Coal samples were collected from the conveyors entering the silos in order to assess the gassiness of the coal. No simple correlation was found between the gassiness of the coal stored and the measured methane concentrations. However, at mines where the average 24-hour gas emission from the conveyor belt samples was 14 ft3/ton or more, fans or open tops were used. It appears that a large fraction of the methane released during storage remains in the void space between the coal particles.

As a result of the new mining law implemented in August 1985 and the programs conducted by the Institute Ecustoriano de Mineria (INEMIN), which was created by this legislation, there was considerably greater activity in the nonfuels mineral sector during 1986. Over the next 2 years, INEMIN will be developing a national mining plan that will guide Ecuadorean mineral development for the balance of this century. As stage one of INEMIN's mineral study, historical records were reviewed and 300 abandoned mines and 1,200 unexplored mineral deposits were available for further investigation. In 1986, INEMIN established 5 branch offices and negotiated 250 new mining contracts with foreign companies valued at $16 million. Despite all this activity, INEMIN officials estimate that 100,000 square kilometers remain available for claim staking. Technical assistance contracts were signed with Belgium, the Federal Republic of Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom, to assist in a variety of assignments ranging from helping prepare the national minion plan to the development of industrial mineral deposits.

The vapor pressure of copper in a series of liquid copper - nickel alloys was determined by the carrier gas method . The activity and activity coefficient of copper were calculated over the entire range of alloy composition . These data show a slight positive deviation from ideal behavior . The activity coefficient of copper was highest ( 2.10 ) at 0.05 mole fraction copper and approached unity at concentrations above 0.85 mole fraction copper . The results for nickel were calculated from the copper data by the graphical integration of the Gibbs - Duhem equation .

Reduce costs of surface mine reclamation by improving scaper operating efficiency and reducing tire costs. Approach The Wheel Slip Monitor senses and compares the peripheral speed of a scraper's four tires 10 the true ground speed of the scraper, and alerts the operator if any of the tires exceeds a predetermined amount of slip. This system helps scraper operators reduce wheel slip during the loading cycle, thereby improving the loading efficiency of the scaper and reducing tire wear and damage. How It Works The system consists of five ultrasonic doppler velocity-sensing devices for measuring the speed of each wheel as well as the true ground velocity (see photograph). Each sensor produces an electrical output signal having a frequency proportional to the speed of the tire or terrain. The signals are conveyed through electrical cables to a control box in the operator's cab where they are converted to voltages proportional to individual wheel speeds (see photograph). The signals are further processed to activate a blinking red light, corresponding to any individual wheel which is slipping, and to sound a beeping tone that is audible to the scraper operator. The rate at which the light blinks and the tone beeps is proportional to the degree of slip. Alerted, the operator can take corrective action.

Background Carbon monoxide (CO) is an odorless, colorless gas that can cause illness and death by asphyxiation. Although the toxicity of CO is understood, CO exposure can occur from unrecognized sources. On April 2, 2000, a couple and their newborn infant were poisoned by CO migrating through the ground from blasting at a nearby coal strip mine into their home near Kittanning, Armstrong County, PA. They were treated at the hospital and diagnosed with CO poisoning. The infant had a carboxyhemoglobin level of 31%, the father 28%, and the mother 17%. Carboxyhemoglobin is the compound formed in the blood when CO is breathed. Persons not exposed to CO have carboxyhemoglobin levels of 0.3%-0.7%, and cigarette smokers have levels of up to 9%. Following release from the hospital, the family installed a CO detector in the basement of their home with the help of the local fire department. This Technology News briefly describes this incident to help increase awareness of the problem. It is discussed in more detail by Eltschlager et al. [2001]. Figure 1 shows the coal strip mine believed to have generated the CO. The initial suspect for the source of the CO was the furnace in the house. Only later did it become apparent that blasting at the nearby strip mine might be the culprit. A State investigation concluded that CO had migrated approximately 500ft from the blast, through the ground, and into the home. Figure 2 shows the locations and order of blasts at the mine. Initially, the mine did not plan to blast. Overburden generally consisted of weathered shale that could be dug without blasting. However, the mine decided to blast when hard sandstone that could not be dug out was encountered within 3 ft of the coal top. The blasting was intended to break up the sandstone. Blasting was done using bulk ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (ANFO) in 6.25-in holes 25-30 ft deep on a 16-ft by 16-ft pattern, with charge weights ranging from 17 to 170 lb. The closest blast to the home was 430 ft on April 17, 2000. The distance from the home to the blast area on the day when CO was first reported (March 31, 2000) was 500 ft. Twenty blasts were detonated at the mine between March 7, 2000, and April 20,2000. The blaster was careful to prevent fly rock since another home was only 150 ft away and a garage was 50 ft away. The quantity of explosive used in the blasts was sufficient to break the sandstone, but was less than would normally be used to blast overburden. The holes were typically one-third explosive and two-thirds stemming, with powder factors averaging 0.43 lb/yd3. Additionally, the muck was not immediately excavated after each blast. The heavy confinement on the explosive acted to prevent the typical release of blasting fumes into the atmosphere. Instances of CO migrating from blasts into homes have occurred before, but generally the distances involved were under 150 ft. It is believed that the blast design contributed to the confinement of CO in the ground, and discontinuities in the ground strata facilitated migration toward the residence. Upon inspection of the blast pitwall, a regular system of joints was observed. These joints are oriented roughly from the blast pit toward the house (figures 3-4).Blast-generated CO appears to have been driven into the joint system, displacing the air. When the joint system was saturated, the next succeeding blast pushed the CO into an uncased well next to the house (a high level of CO has been measured in the well shortly after a blast). From there, the CO entered the French drain system and then the basement of the house. The joints are vertical cracks through rock layers that occur on a regular spacing (figure 3). They are most common near valley slopes and are caused when valley walls converge as the stream cuts down through the rock layers. Often called hill seams, they roughly parallel the valley walls, but can curve and split, creating a pathway for gas movement (figure 5). These fractures are often encountered when underground mining proceeds close to outcrop. The system of fractures at the Kittanning blast pit was well developed and provided a path for transmission of CO both through the sandstone and up and through the overlying shales. Blasting engineers should be able to distinguish naturally occurring fractures from blast fractures and note the frequency, development, and orientation of the hill seams and their proximity to occupied houses. NIOSH conducted a strategic planning effort to identify those areas in mining with the greatest research needs. Data analysis and stakeholder input identified the need to reduce worker exposure to respirable crystalline silica dust as a high priority area. MSHA dust sampling data were analyzed to target the mining commodities and occupations with the greatest percentage of samples containing silica above compliance levels. In response, the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) has implemented a multi-faceted research program to improve silica dust control for these problematic commodities and occupations. A review of silica compliance trends, PRL silica research programs, and recent control technology developments are provided here.

Radon concentrations in shallow uranium mines such as the Bureau of Mines experimental research mine are affected by barometric pressure changes. The radon concentrations show a significant correlation with absolute pressure; but over a period of days, a steady rise or fall in barometric pressure will result in noncorrelation of data. Fan shutdowns also affect radon concentrations, and an equation was derived to determine the time required for the radon concentration to return to normal after a fan shutdown, whether the ventilation is blowing or exhausting.

"Previous Work:As outlined in previous papers* ond clays for graphite crucibles have been tested at the plants of the Detroit Lubricator Co., and the Detroit Copper and Brass Rolling Mills, Detroit, Mich.These tests indicated that there were two American clays (Missouri pot clay and Illinois kaolin) that tested better than the Klingenberg (German) clay. Dorset (English) ball clay was tenth in the list.Making the Crucibles:After it had been determined that American clays can be used successfully in graphite crucible manufacture and service, the next step in the investigation was to determine the value of American graphites as compared to the foreign, These final tests were carried out at the plant of the Detroit Lubricator Co., through the courtesy of Mr. G. B. Duffield. The crucibles, as previously. were made at the plant of the Vesuvius Crucible Co., Swissvale, Penna., from a formula compiled by the Bureau of Mines and under the supervision of Bureau engineers.The graphites to be tested were given an initial to indicate their source. The number of crucibles made and shipped are set forth in Table 1."

As part of its objective to expand the body of mineral information as a basis for new technology, the Bureau of Mines conducted research on the fundamental behavior exhibited by phosphate clay waste in settling ponds. A semiempirical equation used to describe the compaction of ceramic powders in a single-acting die was applied to aqueous phosphatic clay waste and attapulgite slurries. This equation, [*V = a1 e ?k1/P + a2e ? k2/P] was found to describe the compaction of an attapulgite gel and a phosphate slime gel by a moving screen. [*V] is the ratio of the compaction achieved at a given pressure, P, to the compaction achieved at a pres-sure sufficient to remove all space between particles. The constant al represents the fraction of compaction achieved at low pressure by rearrangement of floes to higher packing density, and a2 represents the fraction of compaction achieved at higher pressure resulting from removal of voids within floes. K1 and K2 are constants determined from the experimental data. Both the low-pressure and high-pressure compaction mechanisms were observed in the compaction of the clays. These two compaction mechanisms offer an explanation for the observation that impounded slimes initially dewater rapidly and then dewater at a much slower rate.

Several federal and state agencies have promulgated regulations that require the installation of operator protective structures on mobile equipment used in mining, construction, agriculture and logging industries. These regulations cover many different types of vehicles, from small farm tractors to large rubber-tired front-end loaders, and require structures that help protect the operator from death or injury from vehicle overturns, from falling tree tops and logs, from falling rocks, and from tree limbs in clearing operations. Two general types of vehicle operator protective structures have evolved over the past twenty years. The first of these is the "Roll-Over Protective Structure'' or "ROPS" that is essentially a "roll bar" or "roll cage" that provides a relatively safe area for the vehicle operator if the vehicle should tip over and roll. The second protective structure is the "Falling Object Protective Structure" or "FOPS" that provides overhead protection against falling material. The terms "ROPS" and "FOPS" are often used interchangeably (sometimes inaccurately) with "cabs", “canopies” , "roll bars" , protective structures" and other such descriptive names. In this report, "ROPS" describes the function of the structure; "FOPS" also describes a particular function. Thus a ROPS/FOPS could describe a cab or a canopy that provides both roll-over protection and falling object protection. “MESA” is used as an abbreviation for the Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration; "USBM" is used to abbreviate the U, S. Bureau of Mines.

In laboratory tests and actual mining conditions, the shearer-clearer has proved to be an effective dust control technique. Recent field experience however, has indicated that not enough technical information is available on proper installation of the improved shearer-clearer. This Technology News will provide details of the Improvements made to the shearer-clearer and provide guidelines for installing the system. How It Works The shearer-clearer system consists of several strategically-mounted water sprays and one or more passive barriers. The sprays redirect the airflow around the shearer into both a clean and a contaminated split. The sprays confine the contaminated split or dust cloud to the coal face, allowing the shearer operators to remain in the clean split on the walkway

The effect of engine parameters on exhaust emissions from two diesel engines was studied experimentally. Fuel-injection characteristics and intake air conditions were considered as parameters influencing the emissions. Emphasis was placed on the effect of parameter variations on nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions, because diesels generally emit very low levels of carbon monoxide (CO) and unburned hydrocarbons. Emissions other than NOx were at lowest levels when the engines were adjusted for best performance. NOx emissions can be diminished somewhat through variation in fuel-injection characteristics, but there generally are penalties in emissions of CO, smoke, and unburned hydrocarbons or in engine performance. Temperature and composition of intake air have a significant effect on NOx emissions. Levels of NOx are reduced by recirculating the exhaust gas or by adding water to the intake air stream. However, the rate of water added or exhaust gas recirculated must be limited to prevent the degradation of engine performance and increased emissions of CO and smoke. At high exhaust recirculation rates, levels of CO and smoke were increased such that it was necessary to derate the engine and also to use a catalytic system for oxidation of CO.

Protect rescue workers fighting fires or mine personnel temporarily working in hot environments from heat stress. Approach A specially designed ice-cooled vest is worn while working in hot environments where cooling the mine air is not possible. How It Works The vest holds a total of 44 individual ice cells in packets that are firmly held near the wearer's skin. These ice cells remove heat from the wearer, reducing heat stress and increasing comfort. The locations of the ice cells and packets are shown in the diagram. The vest is constructed in three layers with the outer layer being aluminzed fiberglass cloth. Its aluminized surface reflects radiated heat, and its fiberglass cloth provides fire resistance and strength.

Graduate education is an integral part of the Center's research program. The scope of. work and the duration of each research project is calculated, in part, by taking into consideration the needs of the graduate research program and graduate training. Full development of student involvement, as demonstrated by the research practicum which is offered to qualified senior undergraduates at Penn State University and is designed to acquaint them with research methods and techniques and inform them of the opportunities available in this field. and the fulfillment of graduate program requirements are of the utmost concern. The Pennsylvania State University and West Virginia University have accredited mining engineering curricula and rank among the schools with the largest enrollment in this area in the nation. The number of undergraduate students enrolled in mining engineering at Penn State and West Virginia University account for nearly 20%, of the total undergraduate enrollment in this discipline in schools across the United States. The Pennsylvania State University. West Virginia University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Minnesota, and Michigan Technological University, have granted a total of thirty-five (35) doctorate and masters degrees which can be directly attributed to research conducted in the Center.' Of these graduates, fifteen(15) have found employment in the mineral sector of the economy, i.e., in private industry, with government agencies, and at various universities, worldwide. In addition, a number of those graduating with masters degrees are currently pursuing a doctorate degree.

The Bureau of Mines has compiled pipeline mileage every 5 years since 1926, with the exception of the war period 1941 to 1949. The present survey has been made to reflect the progress under mobilization of the petroleum pipeline industry where efforts have been made by the government to stimulate construction of those facilities that would best equip the nation for a possible major emergency. This report summarizes the total mileage change 1n petroleum pipelines for 1950 through 1952. In order to increase the value of the information gathered the reporting companies were requested for the first time to report not only the net change in mileage as formerly, but also all new and used pipe laid and the total taken up. This new information permits effective appraisal of the construction effort of the industry and relates it to steel requirements.
