Laboratory tests on a combined nitrogen roast--two-stage leach--electro-winning approach show promise as a possible process for recovering copper, sulfur, iron oxide, and valuable minor metals (gold, silver, and molybdenum) with a minimum impact on the environment. During the nitrogen roast at 800° C, 15 to 20 percent of the sulfur together with a significant fraction of the volatile elements, such as arsenic, bismuth, lead, and zinc, are removed from the chalcopyrite concentrate. The resulting calcine, consisting of 8-chalcopyrite, troilite, and a bornitelike structure, is leached with hydro-chloric acid to remove 70 to 85 percent of the iron. The digenite in the leach residue is dissolved in an oxygen-saturated, spent sulfate electrolyte. Using a graphite 'anode plus sulfur dioxide to reduce interference from ferric iron, copper of 99.99+ purity is electrowon at current efficiencies of 88 to 92 percent and a cell voltage of 0.4 to 0.5 volt. Copper recovery for the overall process is 98 to 99 percent. Sulfur is obtained in the elemental form from the roasting and leaching steps. Iron can be recovered from the hydro-chloric acid leach solution. Gold, silver, and molybdenum are concentrated in the silica residue from the spent electrolyte leach.

OVERALL data for 1963 on injury experience and the levels of employment, worktime, and operating activity of the mineral industries are shown in the statistical tables of this chapter. The general groupings of the industries are presented in greater detail in Volumes I and II of the Minerals Yearbook. A corresponding chapter in Volume I contains additional breakdowns of the data on metal, nonmetal, sand and gravel, slag, and stone mines and quarries together with separate information on the related processing mills and plants including primary nonferrous smelters. The more specific information on the anthracite and bituminous-coal, petroleum and natural gas, peat, and natural asphalt industries is given in the similar chapter of Volume II. Injury and employment data were collected from coal producers on the mandatory basis required by the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act (30 U.S.C., sec. 455). Producers of all other minerals (fuel and nonfuel) voluntarily reported the requested injury and employment data. The figures for 1963 are preliminary except for anthracite, coke, petroleum and natural gas, native asphalt, and slag which are final. Data for earlier years are final. The figures represent full coverage for all industries except the oil and gas industries for which coverage is not complete, particularly with respect to small companies.

At the request of the Mine Safety and Health Administration, U.S. Department of Labor, the Bureau of Mines evaluated the model BT 300 C-D blasting machine tester, manufactured and distributed by Research Energy of Ohio, Inc. (REO), to determine whether the tester performed as stated by the manufacturer and responded satisfactorily to electrical faults introduced into the blasting machine circuit. Tester readings were recorded for 13 blasting machines and for 12 circuits constructed to simulate the electrical parameters of actual machines. The tester readings were acceptable for all of the blasting machines, although the switch position assigned to one machine produced an off-scale reading. The tester responded satisfactorily to the simulated circuits and detected serious voltage or capacitance faults when they were introduced. However, it did not respond accurately to certain resistance faults. Temperature tests were also made, and the tester performed equally well at temperatures of 20°, 42°, and 81° F. This tester was judged a useful accessory for field checking blasting machines for defective batteries and capacitors, despite its limitations. It is recommended that the tester manufacturer specify the lowest acceptable reading at which a blasting machine may be used and below which the blasting machine should be returned to the laboratory or manufacturer for maintenance.

"INTRODUCTION The Cline mine has been worked intermittently for copper and gold since 1895. Scheelite has recently been detected with the aid of a ""Mineralite"" on the old waste dumps of the mine. Four diamond-drill holes were drilled by the Bureau of Mines from August 13 to September 25, 1946. Results of this drilling showed the vein to pinch at depth and to carry no mineralization of economic importance.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. A. 4 Illustrative Simulations The capabilities of the program are demonstrated by simulating various evacuation cases in different situations for a particular mine. The mine selected for the illustrative simulations is the mine I C' , as described in Section 2, chosen particularly because of availability of mine characteristic data and mine evacuation results for test drills. These evacuation results can be used to verify validity of the predictions made by the program A.4 1 Mine Characteristics A schematic diagram of the mine is shown in Figure 19. The figure shows all the major shafts, drifts, raises and stopes of the mine in the form of a network. There are four hoists, Hoist No. 1 and Hoist No. 2 are assumed to be single drum hoists and Hoists Nos. 3 and 4 form part of a double drum hoist, with Hoist No. 4 being the main hoist (master hoist) The positions of the 133 miners, typically working in a day shift of the mine, are also shown in the figure. The miners are identified by a miner number, and their total number on each level is chosen from the data on the fire drill simulated as Case No. 1 in the illustrative simulations.

C. 7 Emergency Rescue Hoists There is a need, especially in mine development areas, for portable, on-call, man-rated equipment capable of lifting men through several hundred feet. Wire rope climbing equipment as shown in Figure 37 appears particularly suited to this need. It is portable, weighing approximately 100 lbs. , is currently man-rated for numerous above ground applications and can be electric or air powered. Commercial units currently have a lifting capacity of 1000 lbs. , and can be fitted with bosun' s chairs. Lifting speeds are in the 20-30 FPM range and the equipment is not depth limited. In a situation where miners are unable to climb to the top of a shaft this equipment could rapidly be anchored to the top of the shaft and lowered to them by hand. Since the self contained unit is controlled by the person travelling in the shaft he would be able to negotiate shaft obstruction himself. This would not be possible with other forms of easily deployed free-hanging equipment. The rapid depletion of shallower coal reserves dictate that mining in the future will be deeper and more complex with more difficult natural conditions. Consequently, an increase in methane emission is expected. It is becoming evident that more accurate predictions and better planning are necessary to design efficient methane drainage systems. This objective can be achieved by the utilization of the knowledge of the physics of gas flow through coal seams and rock strata and by the application of digital computers in the solution of methane flow problems. Although the methane emission models described here have not been adequately applied to existing field operations, good agreement between actual field measurements reported in literature and the simulation results indicates the potential of these models for initial flow quantity approximations and ventilation planning. This report has, therefore, introduced to the mine operator yet another application of computers as a planning tool. AREAS FOR FURTHER RESEARCH The study reported here is by no means complete. Extensive research efforts should be directed to the following areas: (a) Better understanding of the physics of gas flow through porous media which exhibit fracture permeability. (b) Determination of field parameters which control gas migration. (c) Investigation of the effects of the rate of penetration on the emission rate and fracture propagation.

A central requirement for using simulation models is the need for retrospect testing to validate experimental conclusions. Acceptance of a model by managers and safety practitioners is more likely to depend on its tested performance in-the field rather than on the underlying logic or the validity aspects of the model itself. It is here that simulation bridges the gap between theory and useful design procedures. The original version of the rail haulage sub-assembly was success¬fully tested in the field (Sanford, 1969). However, the case studies that were described here involved single-stage haulage and restricted jobtypes from UGMHS. Since this report together with Volume VI (Production Subsystem) describes extensive changes and modifications to the rail haulage sub-assembly and UGMHS, field tests were necessary to verify both the rail model and the linking concepts to the Produc¬tion Sub-system. Mine Description The candidate mine selected for model verification works the 6 1/2 foot Pittsburgh seam. Shaft openings are used for manways and ventilation and a dual compartment slope for materials handling. In the bottom half of the slope, a hoist with track handles supplies and equipment. In the upper half, a 42 inch belt conveyor travelling at 450 fpm moves coal from a rotary dump to the surface. The immediate roof is shale with the first 12 inches taken during development mining. About 4500 raw tons are produced daily from seven face units and one spare working three shifts. At seven of the sections,

The Bureau of Mines is examining a variety of low-grade uranium ores because projections indicate that an appreciable percentage of future U.S. uranium production will be derived from resources containing 0.01 to 0.1 percent U308. One possible source is represented by a granitic material from Wyoming; the available samples contained 0.06 and 0.12 percent U308. Tests were conducted to explore the general leaching characteristics of this potential resource. The material responded to both acidic and alkaline leaching techniques. Conventional acid leaching extracted 93 percent of the uranium in 18 hours; the required acid addition was 50 to 100 pounds of H2S04 per ton of ore, and the oxidant addition was 3 pounds of NaCl03 per ton of ore. The acid consumption continues after maximum uranium recovery has been reached; this effect may complicate heap or in situ leaching with acidic solutions. Some variation in reagent requirements was noted between the two ore samples. Conventional carbonate leaching with strong solutions at 85° C extracted 94 percent of the uranium in 24 hours. These granitic materials also showed some response to dilute carbonate solutions, and the results suggest that the material may be chemically amenable to heap or in situ leaching with dilute carbonate solutions.

A Bureau of Mines method for recovering nickel, cobalt, and copper from low-grade domestic laterites is described, which includes the unit operations of solvent extraction and electrowinning. Previous Bureau work indicated that addition of Na2S04 (sodium sulfate) to the nickel electrolyte improved current efficiency in nickel electrowinning. The present study determines the compatibility of Na2S04 with nickel strip-ping in the solvent extraction operation of the Bureau method. The effect of adding 100 g/l Na2S04 on nickel stripping, phase disengagement, and pH was determined in comparative laboratory-scale tests. In continuous-circuit testing, Na2S04 reduced stripping efficiency to the extent that five, instead of four, strip stages were required for complete stripping of nickel from the loaded solvent. In tests made in a phase-disengagement cell that had a variable settler area, the addition of Na2S04 did not significantly affect phase separation characteristics. The pH of the nickel electrolyte in the temperature range of 20° to 65° C was also unaffected by the addition of Na2S04. An economic evaluation showed that the energy saved by adding Na2S04 to the electrolyte would more than offset the cost of adding another stripping stage.

"INTRODUCTION The Big Four fault and the Sandy Creek fault, with several cross faults, traverse the Stalion-Curnel fluorspar prospect in a northeasterly direction. The Big Four mine, about three-quarters of a mile northeast of the prospect, is the only active mine in the immediate area.A resistivity survey was made of a portion of the prospect by the Division of Geophysical Exploration, Bureau of Mines, in May and June 1946. As a result of this survey, five holes were drilled by the Bureau of Mines during the period from October 8 to December 16, 1946. Develop a safer, more effective, and more efficient method to control fires in abandoned coal mines and waste banks. Maintain the costs of this new method at less than or comparable to conventional AMI fire control methods. How It Works Cryogenic extinguishment of subsurface fires is a method of heat transfer. Bureau-designed injection equipment produces a pumpable slurry of liquid nitrogen and solid particles of carbon dioxide. Liquid or gaseous carbon dioxide from a pressurized tank flows to a bell-shaped nozzle where the change in pressure causes the carbon dioxide to form a granular snow. The solid carbon dioxide is mixed with liquid nitrogen. A jet pump is used to move the slurry through the delivery lines and into a simple injection probe. At injection, the nitrogen vaporizes and the carbon dioxide sublimes. This phase change produces a cold gas (-180° C) that, as it expands and moves in all directions, removes heat and also displaces oxygen. This combined process inhibits the combustion process and lowers the temperature below the reignition point. When the liquid nitrogen and solid carbon dioxide are converted to gases, the expanding gas acts like a piston, forcing warm air out of the porous bed, Although smoke and hot gases arc forced from the burning coal, generally there is no significant increase in the odor associated with burning coal.

Thermal treatment of respirable size silica dust samples results in marked changes in their hemolytic activity. These changes can be correlated with changes in the characteristics of the particle surface as measured by infrared spectra, zeta potentials, and specific surface area. Silica samples from various sources (Min-U-Sil, fumed silica, and a NIOSH standard sample) were heated or calcined at temperatures ranging from 100-1095C. The hemolytic activity of the crystalline materials decreased after thermal treatment. The behavior of the fumed material was found to be more complex. Material of very large surface area (small particle size) exhibits an initial increase in hemolytic activity upon calcination. This result confirms other experimental observations pointing to a particle size of maximum toxicity. Tre changes in hemolytic activity can be related to infrared spectra and zeta potentials of the materials. The absorption band in the 3200-4000 cm-1 frequency region of the fumed material disappears upon heat treatment while a sharp, characteristic band at 3750 cm-1 increases in intensity. Zeta potential measurements conducted in the pH range of 2.0-10.5 exhibit a unique change in zeta potential v.s. pH profile with heat treatment. These findings indicate that the removal of active surface silanol groups by calcination results in reduced cytotoxicity, as measured by a hemolysis test.

"In the land-pebble district of Florida a lively interest in the possibilities of obtaining increased recoveries of phosphate rock is evident. Research in several directions is being carried on by companies operating in the district to increase the yields obtained by the washing plants. The Bureau of Mines is cooperating with this research program to promote more efficient plant practice and to avoid unnecessary depletion of mineral resources.Washing practice, as carried on in the district at present for the recover of phosphate rock from the crude ores or matrix, is not a complicated process. Flow sheets of the several companies are similar, although the equipment varies with the preferences of the individual operators. For disintegrating the matrix log washers are favored, although revolving drums equipped with flights to break up lumps of clay are also used. Fine sand is removed by screening. Vibrating screens have become well established in the district, although stationary flat screens and trammels are also employed.The writer acknowledges with appreciation the cooperation of the phosphate companies in the land-pebble district; suggestions and criticism by Will. In these sizes the phosphate grains are accompanied by grains of sand - largely quartz - of the same size, and recovery of these phosphate grains as a commercial product is not possible by simple washing methods. Phosphate recoveries approaching complete extraction can only be effecte by applying metallurgical processes, either mechanical or chemical. As yet, most of these processes have not advanced much beyond the laboratory or perhaps the pilot-plant stage. Such processes may have some application to the beneficiation of phosphatic ores or washer rejects, but a discussion of them is not within the scope of this paper."

A tube-wall reactor with a Raney nickel catalyst deposited on the outer wall of the tube by flame spraying is effective in the practically complete conversion of 3H2+1CO synthesis gas to a high-Btu gas (methane) at an hourly space velocity of 7,000 volumes of gas (NTP) per hour per volume of annular volume. Partially reacted synthesis gas containing an appreciable amount of methane can also be treated in this reactor to increase the heating value to over 900 Btu per cubic foot. Excellent heat removal through the metal wall to a coolant and temperature control were obtained. The heat transfer co-efficient from the catalyst to the coolant was about 275 Btu per hour per square foot per ° F. Synthesis tests were conducted with tubes 1.2 inches in ad by 6 inches long, and 1.3 inches in od by 36 inches long. When operating at a synthesis gas rate of 100 to 120 scfh per square foot of catalyst-coated tube, catalyst life was long enough to realize a catalyst cost for the raw Raney nickel alloy of about 0.3 cent per 1,000 cubic feet of pipeline gas (900 to 950 Btu per scf). Gas recycling at ratios of 1:1 to 3:1 was effective in increasing conversion and in extending the life of the catalyst to about 16 weeks. In cost and in operating characteristics the tube-wall reactor compares favorably with the fluidized-bed and hot-gas-recycle reactor systems for the synthesis of high-Btu gas from H2+CO.

This chapter includes tables from 1984 that were not available in time for publication of the 1984 Minerals Yearbook, but does not include corresponding tables for 1985. The value of raw nonfuel minerals produced in the United States during 1985 was estimated at $23.2 billion, an increase of $0.07 billion over the value for 1984. This is the third consecutive year that the value has increased, and except for a decrease in 1982, the value for each year has increased since 1971, or 13 out of 14 years. However. while the value of industrial minerals production continued to grow, reflecting the growth of the domestic economy, the value of metal mine production decreased in 1985 by 6%. This drop was more than offset by a 3% increase in the value of industrial minerals production because the value of industrial minerals produced was more than three times larger than the value of metals. The decrease makes 1986 the third year in the past 5 years in which a drop in the value of metal mining production occurred in the United States where production continued to lag behind growing world production. Domestic production of such major commodities 88 aluminum, copper, iron ore, phosphate rock, and zinc continued to decline owing to a number of international and domestic factors. Gold continued to be the most active commodity in the domestic metal mining industry. Despite lower prices, gold output increased to 2.5 million troy ounces, a 19% increase over that of 1984. The estimated annual production capacity of new gold mines beginning production exceeded 1 million ounces.

The impact of mining activities on the economy in both 1983 and 1984 was minimal. The most recent available data on the gross domestic product (GDP) indicated a level of $1.6 billion in 1983.2 The estimated value for the production of cement, aragonite, and salt was about $17 million in that year, down from the estimated $20 million in 1982. No data are available on the economic impact of the large petroleum refinery at Freeport on Grand Bahama Island, but it represents the major mineral-related activity. Cement production remained at only a fraction of the 800,000 tons per year of plant capacity. The offshore search for hydrocarbons continued in 1984, and some companies were about to enter the third year of seismic and geological surveying around Andros and Grand Bahamas Islands. Getty Oil (Bahamas) Co. Inc.; Breoco Ltd., a subsidiary of REO Development Corp. of Tulsa, Oklahoma; and Natomas Petroleum (Bahamas) Ltd. were the first companies to be awarded exploration licenses. These companies were committed to drilling at least one well before the end of the third exploration year. Other companies actively engaged in exploration included Exxon Corp., Atlantic Richfield Co. (ARCO), Chevron Oil Bahamas Ltd., and Esso Oil Bahamas Ltd. Geophysical Services Inc. (GSI) of Dallas, Texas, and Petroleum Services (Bahamas) Ltd. of Englewood, Colorado, ran another seismic survey line during 1984. This 1,533-mile line was in the Great Bahama Bank and Cay Sal Bank areas off the southeast Florida coast, and tied in with a 4,530-mile program GSI ran in 1981-82. These surveys were nonexclusive and publicly available through GSI.

A computer model of an existing mine ventilation system can be executed using data developed from ventilation survey results. This model can then be used to analyze and evaluate proposed modifications to the system. The acquisition of field measurements during a ventilation survey and the corresponding development of this information into computer input data have been discussed in detail in the preceding chapters. In this chapter, the data are used in computer-oriented analysis of the mine ventilation system. The PSU/MVS was selected for use because of its advanced capabilities. MINE DESCRIPTION The mine chosen for this application is located in Western Pennsylvania. The Pittsburgh coal seam, having an average height of 5-1/4 to 6-1/2 ft, is mined under approximately 300 to 500 ft of cover. The mine preparation plant and shipping facilities are located at the seam outcrop along a river; mining has progressed from the outcrop to an area about 10 miles from the pit mouth so that there are extensive worked-out areas through which access is maintained to the current mining area. Coal haulage is by conveyor to an underground transfer point, located four miles from the pit mouth, and then by high speed rail haulage to the preparation plant. The rail haulage link is scheduled for replacement by a conveyor in the near future. Mining at the present time is limited to the room and pillar method using continuous miners. Longwall mining had been attempted in the past with only limited success; as a result, several panels originally laid out for longwall mining are currently being extracted by room and pillar work. Experience, it is said, is the best teacher. Some experiences, however, should be shared so that no one else will ever have to live through them again. The fire at the Sunshine Mine is one such experience. ?Hard-rock mines don?t burn.? The Sunshine Mine near Kellogg, ID, was the nation?s premier silver producer for many years. In 1972, the mine was nearly 6,000 feet deep, contained hundreds of miles of worked-out areas, and employed nearly 500 people. Because of its depth and the type of host rock for the silver (unburnable quartzite), the general thinking of the day was that fires in mines such as the Sunshine were impossible, because ?hard-rock mines don?t burn.? What wasn?t really considered was that timber supports, foam insulation, and mining equipment do burn and that the carbon monoxide gas produced by burning is far more deadly than fire itself. Thus, no one was prepared when, on May 2, 1972, a fire of un-known origin broke out below the 3100 level of the mine. Before long, 173 miners on the day shift were trapped by thick, black smoke. By the time the fire was out, 91 miners had died, and the Sunshine Mine Fire became known as one of the worst mine disasters of the 20th century. It became the catalyst for passage of the Metal/Nonmetal Health and Safety Act of 1977, which applied the same federal safety standards to hard-rock mines as those regulating coal. Mandated safety training, mine inspections, and equipment standards were brought into force.
