Carbon number distributions were obtained for tar acid fractions from five low-temperature tars by low-ionizing voltage mass spectrometry. Quantitative data for phenols representing seven structural compound types were examined by statistical analysis. It was shown that for the phenols discussed, the data could be represented by regression equations expressing phenolic concentration as a function of the reciprocal of the carbon number and the carbon-to-hydrogen ratio of the parent coal. The total concentration of each structural type present was found to depend on the molecular weight and boiling point of the initial member of the group. Carbon distribution data for the tar acid fractions studied support the view that low-temperature tars contain the same chemical compounds but in different proportions.

Values for CP°, S°, H° -H°298, ?Hf°, and ?Gf° are given in tabular form. A brief thermodynamic background and a number of examples and applications are presented.

The Bureau of Mines examined a low-, a medium-, and a high-volatile Pennsylvania anthracite by densimetric methods using four mesh si.s of each anthracite. Using high-pressure mercury the macropore volumes and distributions of these pore volumes determined, densities in mercury were calculated, and specific pore vo1.r. ware obtained from these mercury densities in conjunction with helium densities. The helium densities were also used with the ultimate analyses of these anthracites in calculating structural parameters by statistical densimetric methods. The effect of 106 or 108 rads of gamma irradiation in the presence of air and in vacuum upon the properties studied with two mesh sizes of each anthracite. Results of the statistical densimetric method seem to show some breakdown of condensed ring structural units at the lower irradiation level, with subsequent polymerization at the longer period of gamma irradiation. The structural parameters obtained also indicated that in going from high- to low-volatile anthracite, either the number of condensed rings per structural unit increased, or the degree of polymerization increased.

The properties of the Colorado Copper Co. in Sinbad Valley, Mesa and Montrose Counties, Colo., were rehabilitated and sampled by the Bureau of Mines in October, November, and December 1942. The several deposits were reexamined in March and April 1945 to obtain information disclosed by company work after December 1942. The development program included surface trenching, rehabilitation of several edits, and channel sampling of the exposures. Assay determinations wore made on 204 samples from the surface and underground workings. The results are given in the appendix. Several copper deposits in the Sinbad Valley area are similar in origin. The host rocks are sedimentary and mice in age from Pennsylvanian to Cretaceous. The Colorado No. 3 deposit occurs in the Cutler formation, which consists of many small lenses of conglomerate, sandstone, and shale. Mineralization is closely associated with faulting. On the Pyramid group the enrichment occurs in a zone of fracturing and jointing end also spreads into the adjoining sandstone. The ore deposition on the Copper Rivet claim is associated with a fault zone and is confined to en area above the contact of the Dolores-Wingate formations. Mineral deposits on the Sinbad claims occur at intersections of faults with blue-gray Pennsylvania limestone. Copper enrichment occurs along faults and as replacement of the surrounding limestone. Metallurgical tests indicate that ores from the Colorado No. 3 and Pyramid claims can be treated successfully by leaching with sulfuric acid. This method cannot be applied to ores from the Copper Rivet or Sinbad deposits because of high calcite content. Flotation tests at Boulder City, Nev., showed a recovery of less than 60 percent with a 14.24 percent copper concentrate.

Proper illumination is critical to a miner?s ability to detect hazards in underground mines. Moving hazards are often located in the miner?s peripheral field-of-view, while slip/trip/ fall hazards are often located in the forward field-of-view. The objective of the research described in this paper was to determine if light-emitting diodes (LEDs) improve visual performance as compared to traditional incandescent (INC) cap lamps. The research presented focuses on comparative studies of a National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) prototype LED, a commercial LED and an INC camp lamp. Thirty subjects participated in these studies, with ten subjects in each of the following age groups: 18 to 25 years, 40 to 50 years and 51+ years old. Visual per­formance was quantified by the subjects? speed and accuracy in detecting hazards, while visual performance for disability glare was quantified by the use of contrast sensitivity tests. Results suggest that LEDs with a visible spectrum containing a higher concentration of the shorter wavelengths can enable visual performance improvements with respect to disability glare, the detection of moving hazards in the peripheral field-of-view and the detection of floor hazards in the forward field-of-view. The NIOSH prototype LED cap lamp provided the best visual performance improvements for the older age groups in every test.

The motor gasoline that is bring marketed in the United States this stunner is slightly more volatile than that sold a year ago. During the past eight years the Bureau of Mines has made semi-annual surveys of the gaoline marketed in the United States, the survey just completed being the sixteenth in the series. The cities in which samples have been collected have been chosen as representative of the more important marketing territories as it is obviously impracticable to obtain a sample of every gasoline sold in the entire country.

The effect of oxidation by air at temperatures ranging from 200° to 390° C on the change of chemical and physical properties of Pittsburgh-bed coal was studied as a function of processing time and temperature. The goal was to prepare a nonagglomerating fuel from a strongly coking coal for use in continuous carbonizing processes and in fixed-bed gasifiers. The oxidized coal was carbonized in a bench-scale apparatus, and the coke strength was evaluated in a Roga tumbler. Strength of the coke was progressively reduced with time of oxidation until the coking power of the coal was apparently destroyed. Time requirements to obtain an essentially nonagglomerating product were inversely related to processing temperature. Gaseous products released from the coal during oxidation reduced the yield of the desired nonagglomerating product, which decreased with time of oxidation at constant temperature and with increase in processing temperature at equal time. Oxidation at a temperature slightly above the lower limit of the plastic temperature range of Pittsburgh-bed coal was most effective because of the short processing time required and moderate processing losses.

The practice of using partly depleted oil reservoirs for gas-storage operations is proving successful. Moreover, this practice provides a method of secondary oil recovery when gas is cycled at full-storage reservoir pressure. Because of the relative newness of this operation, a study was undertaken to assist engineers in developing improved gas-injection and production procedures and in calculating the amount of gas needed for completely repressuring reservoirs. This paper is the third in a series reporting the progress of a study by the Federal Bureau of Mines of reservoir performance during complete gas repressuring and gas cycling. A procedure for estimating secondary oil recovery by this method is also under study. One report (7)3/ describes the laboratory equipment. The other report (8) gives (1) data on the New York City field, Clay County, Tex., which has been converted to gas-storage operations; (2) laboratory data from research with a model oil reservoir, in which primary production, complete gas repressuring, and gas cycling for the New York City field were simulated; and (3) theory to explain reservoir performance during gas repressuring.

The liquid-level gage described in this report is an instrument designed to locate liquid levels in wells rapidly and accurately and, with auxiliary equipment described, to follow moving liquid levels automatically. The depth at which the instrument makes contact with the liquid in a well is indicated at the surface by a depth meter on the cable to which the instrument is attached. When the gage is used to follow a surging moving level, the liquid depth is indicated continuously at the surface. This report contains a description and illustrations of the gage and outlines the operating procedures. The instrument is 1-3/4 inches in diameter and approximately 6 feet in length and may be operated through 2-inch tubing. The gage consists essentially of a float that moves upward with respect to the rest of the assembly, causing a change in the flow of electric current from the surface when the liquid level is reached. The instrument has been tested under a variety of conditions and has been found to be sensitive to changes in liquid level of 1/2 inch. Its accuracy is limited principally by the accuracy of the wire-line depth indicator used. It is not affected by pressure or temperature, and it can be run in open hole or under pressure through a lubricator. It employs only one electric circuit and can be run on an Amergraph single-conductor cable (type 1-H-0) ,

Sulfide ore concentrates containing cobalt, nickel, copper, lead, and iron were salt roasted and leached on a laboratory scale. More than 95 percent of the cobalt, nickel, and copper was recovered. Heating patterns for salt roasting different concentrates were established. More cobalt, nickel, and copper were recovered from a bulk concentrate composed of a mixture of copper concentrate and iron concentrate. This mixture corresponded roughly with the mixture of these materials in stockpiles in southeastern Missouri. A temperature range of 375° to 400° C. was best for salt roasting. Metal chlorides were leached at a pH of 1 from chloridized charges of concentrates, Although the amounts of cobalt, nickel, and copper extracted were high, the amount of iron dissolved simultaneously interfered with subsequent separation and recovery of these metals. The amount of dissolved iron was reduced substantially by steam treating chloridized charges of bulk concentrate at 300° C. In this way, the ratios of cobalt, nickel, and copper to iron in leach liquors permitted satisfactory separation and recovery of these metals. This report is a compilation of the results of preliminary tests on ores containing scheelite (calcium tungstate). In most of the ores, scheelite was the only value; but several samples contained other values, such as gold, base metals, or, in one instance beryl. These investigations were made to assist the development of domestic tungsten resources by establishing satisfactory treatment methods suitable for small-scale operations. The samples were obtained through the Mining Division of the Bureau of Mines and represent, for the most part, newly discovered deposits. A previous report2/ discussed laboratory test procedures. A less detailed description of test procedures is included in the present report. As is usual in an investigation of this type, only a limited amount of work was done on most of the samples to indicate the results that could be expected from simple treatment of the particular ore. The occurrence of scheelite and the texture of the minerals present differ greatly in individual ores and must be determined and considered in establishing such details of treatment as grinding to obtain optimum liberation of the minerals, the preferred type of gravity concentration, or possible further treatment by flotation.

In the design of plants to separate helium from natural gas, it is necessary to estimate the enthalpies of the various streams at various positions in the process. This Bureau of Mines report surveys the various methods that have been used to determine enthalpies and gives information on the organizations with such capabilities. The minimum information required for developing an enthalpy diagram is presented, and the relative merits of the various methods are discussed. It is concluded that methods that require no mass flow rate or energy measurements are to be preferred.

"The El Dorado copper mine is situated in the foothill copper-zinc belt of California, which traverses the western slope of the Sierra Nevada with unusual persistence from Butte County to Kern County, a distance of more than 300 miles. Although this area contains such important past producers as the Penn mine, Union, and others, a great part of the current production has been derived from smaller properties, which depend largely on premium metal prices for economical operation. The El Dorado mine is in the latter group, which constitutes an important source of metal in a national emergency.Exploration by the Bureau of Mines by means of eight diamond-drill holes Indicated narrow, intermittent lenses of copper ore along structures boo feet in length. The copper occurs in massive sulfides composed of chalcopyrite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, and minor quantities of bernite. The sulfides have evidently replaced tuffs, which are interbedded with the Mariposa slates and shales.H. A. Weiler and Hal T. Hall, owners of the El Dorado copper property, requested an examination by the Bureau during the latter part of 1914. In December of that year an engineer of the Bureau of Mines visited the mine and recommended the project work undertaken. The purpose was to aid the owners in bringing the property into production of copper and zinc, which at that time was critically essential to the war industries.Complete factual data obtained by the exploration are embodied in this report.In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. As part of research conducted in its mission to effect pollution abatement, the Bureau of Mines, U. S. Department of the Interior, is developing a dewatering technique that allows for disposal of phosphatic clay wastes, for reuse of water now lost with clays, and for reclamation of mined land. The technique utilizes a high-molecular-weightnonionic polyethylene oxide polymer (PEO) that has the ability to flocculate and dewater phosphatic clay wastes. A synergistic flocculation study was made to determine whether a portion of PEO could be replaced by other reagents. Several groups of reagents were tested: (1) those that increased the zeta potential of the phosphatic clay wastes; (2) those capable of hydrogen bonding; and (3) those which flocculated the phosphatic clay waste. Reduction in PEO consumption occurred only with addition of those reagents able to flocculate the slime. The use of natural guar gums resulted in a lower PEO requirement and also yielded a dewatered product of higher solids content, 43 to 45 percent, versus 33 to 35 percent obtained with PEO alone.

The Bagdad-Chase copper-gold mine south of Ludlow, Calif., was visited by an engineer of the Bureau of Mines in July 1955 to determine the mine's status of activity and to obtain a bulk sample for metallurgical testing. The deposit was discovered in 1903 and has been worked intermittently. It has a production record of about 273,000 tons of ore. The first production of about 150,000 tons was treated in a cyanide plant 2 miles west of Barstow, Calif. The extraction of gold was not satisfactory because of the presence of copper minerals. Since 1910 the ore has been shipped to various smelters in Arizona and California for use as a flux.

This Bureau of Mines publication presents guidelines for mining near surface and underground bodies of water. The guidelines were based on information developed under contract in three phases of study, as follows: (1) Collection and documentation of data from worldwide sources; (2) application of existing guidelines, foreign, Federal, and State, to case histories of previous inundations; and (3) development of recommended guidelines for underground coal mining near bodies of water aimed at maximum efficient utilization of underground coal resources consistent with minimizing inundation hazards. While the contract guidelines were for the mining of coal seams, they may also be used for mining any tabular sedimentary mineral deposit. Tables are given for the determination of the size of coal pillars needed; for other bedded deposits, similar tables could be determined based on their strength properties.
