The advent of more powerful explosives, increased bench heights, and larger diameter blastholes has necessitated the use of presplitting techniques in sub-bituminous coal mines. The combination of these factors has increased the energy concentration during blasting, producing severe overbreak problems in the final pit walls. Presplitting with large diameter blastholes has proven to be the most viable method of reducing back break in sub-bituminous coal mines.

The paper proposed a fractal and damage model for rock-breaking by blasting, which assumed that the process of rock-breaking results from intrincent fractal development and the accumulation of damage. Remarkably, the process is of fracture character. Based on the model, a computer program is compiled to calculate the 3-dimension damage distribution in blasting crater. Trial results agree well with the predicted results, showing the model set up in the paper is sound.

Fragmentation is sensitive to the inter-relationship among the design variables which define pattern geometry. SYNCRUDE CANADA LTD.. operates the largest synthetic crude oil production facility in the world. Over 60,000,000 Bank Cubic Metres of oil sand is mined each year from their open pit located in Fort McMurray, Alberta. Despite the extremely cold temperatures encountered during the winter months and the problems associated with frost buildup, SYNCRUDE has continued to operate on a 12 month per year basis. In 1989 SYNCRUDE mine management embarked on a comprehensive Frost Blasting program to improve mine production of their oil sand moving equipment. The following paper will discuss the development of their frost blasting program to its current status.

Blasting techniques, which have been used for a long time in Turkey, are powerful and economical tool in producing raw material in mining, quarrying, construction .etc. industries. The development of the society within the world has resulted in a substantial increase in the scale of such industrial projects. However, the expansion of such activity has been matched by an increased public awareness of environmental issues, particularly when it occurs in relatively close proximity to residential areas. One of the most troublesome issues facing the mining, quarrying and construction industries when carrying out their blasting activities is that of ground vibration. Because, blasting induced ground vibration can reach to very far distances from the source and has the potential for damage to concern to the inhabitants of property.

This paper presents a brief discussion of three case histories to illustrate several aspects of the question of blasting in or immediately adjacent to concrete. The results demonstrate a need to make dramatic upward revisions in previous criteria, whether it be the standard particle velocity criteria or damage response spectra bounds, - especially those which include conservative upper limits of constant acceleration for the high-frequency portion of the spectrum. It is demonstrated, also, that conventional off-the-shelf blast-monitoring instruments are not capable of monitoring small blasts at close range. Both the frequencies and the levels of effect are beyond the range of such instruments. These case histories suggest further that there is a need to review the applicability of certain wellknown equations of elasticity.

Explosives are used in the entertainment industry in a wide variety of applications. Live performances such as automobile races, air shows and the like have incorporated the use of explosives into their programs. Even art work has been created employing explosive materials and techniques. The primary entertainment use of explosives, however, remains in motion pictures, television, theater and related fields where it comes under the auspices of special effects. Much of it falls roughly into the category of demolition, though the object being demolished may range from a cigarette in a person's mouth or clothing worn by actors to large objects such as automobiles, aircraft, or boats. This paper will attempt to provide an overview of the materials and methods by which these special effects are created as well as highlight the unique problems encountered in this field and their often equally unique solutions.

A Discrete element computer program named DMC (Distinct Motion Code) has been developed for modeling rock blasting. This program employs explicit time integration and uses spherical or cylindrical elements which are represented as circles in 2-D. DMC calculations have been compared with measurements on bench blasts in the field with relatively good comparison. Structural geology and joint sets have a significant impact on any blast and DMC has not, until now, included these effects. This paper discusses a recently added DMC capability for treating joints and bedding planes in bench blast simulations.

On the basis of actual parameter of wall control blast in Nanfeng mine, China, the process of dynamic stress changing between two column charges was studied recently for a presplit-cushion blast by holographic photoelasticity. In the experimental model, two holes were simultaneously detonated from both ends (four ignition points). The bottom of the holes were loaded more than other parts (heavy charge). Under these conditions, four consecutive isochromatic fringe patterns at different times were acquired in one loading run, and the characteristics of the stress distributions were compared at different places and times in the holes. It was found that interaction types of stress waves vary along the holes. The theory is posed that the stress wave which is formed by the interaction of earlier producing P wave and later S wave along a distributed line charge is the most important part in all stress waves. Research indicates that a heavy charge in the bottom of the holes is crucial to producing a presplit-cushion effect at the bottom. "End Effect" doesn't affect the magnitude of stress along linking lines between the bottoms. The chief fields of the "End Effect" are also explained in the paper.

The recruitment and retention of future talent into the explosives industry is becoming increasingly important. One potential area from which future talent can be recruited is local student chapters. Many of the student chapters are closely connected with engineering programs. While this makes sense and both entities benefit from these arrangements, there is a trend of job placement primarily in the engineering industry. Before the explosives industry can begin to compete with other industries, it should be determined what is drawing the students into these other fields. The work presented in this paper sought to better understand the collegiate student population from which a portion of future explosives professionals will emerge. This was done through the use of an anonymous online survey distributed to the student members of the International Society of Explosives Engineers, as well as, members of SEE student chapters. The survey contained questions about future job and career plans, ideal job placement, and expectations of salary. The purpose of the survey was to determine what these students expect or require from a career in the explosives industry. This information can help steer recruitment activities and job offers. Through understanding what is incentivizing these students who have accepted or plan to accept jobs in other industries the explosives industry can better posture itself to be more competitive in recruiting from the collegiate talent pool.

Three laboratory tests were developed for rating the wave-impact ruggedness of cap-sensitive explosives that are used for blasting in underground coal mines. Destructible pipe fixtures, called simulators, reproduce the shock wave or rift compression registered during the cross-hole wave interactions. The rift-compression fixture was modified to render quasi-static desensitization, when utilized with a remote air supply. Waves that were recorded near charge explosions show narrow pulses resembling underwater shock waves, followed by wide, weak humps, called rift compressions.

Located in the Chestnut Ridge Mountains of Southwestern Pennsylvania, the Casparis mine named for the founder Kenneth Casparis operated from 1916 until the early 1950. producing crushed stone for construction and railroad ballast. The rock was transported by aerial buckets to a railroad tipple nearly 1000’ (304.80 meters) below the mine. The mine property is now owned by the Pennsylvania Game Commission and is located in the Loyalhanna limestone seam with 4 primary entries that are approximately 40’ (12.19 meters) high by 30’ (9.14 meters) wide and extend over 2 miles (3.22 kilometers) into the mountain.

As farms decrease and subdivisions increase there is a continuing demand for easy and safe silo removal. A few years ago I attended one of the Omni istribution explosive classes and was impressed by a product designed by Omni owner Bill Nixon called the Omni Breach. Its original purpose and main current use is law enforcement; specifically door breaching and tactical operations, with most of the force coming from water using a minimal amount of explosive component. I experimented with various charge strengths on concrete and found that it can be easily shattered with little flyrock or airblast. A neighbor of mine had an old silo within a foot of a barn that he was rebuilding and inquired about its removal. His property was sandwiched between an elementary school and Interstate 40, so I told him that I would do some test shots and if the results proved satisfactory, I would take the job for free to test the following theory.
