"Deep concentration of iron ores involves extraction, in addition to magnetite concentrate, of hematite and martite concentrates and recovery of other valuable components. A flotation technology was designed specifically for finely disseminated hematite ore, allowing producing saleable hematite concentrate containing 64-66% Fe. The main process challenge is caused by the presence of other ferruginous minerals such as carbonates, silicates, and phosphates, and fine hematite and martite mostly concentrated in the -0.044 mm fraction. Main operations of the processing circuit are removal of slime, flotation to remove impurities (carbonates, phosphates etc.) with an anionic phosphorous collector in an alkaline environment, hematite and martite flotation using same collector in a slightly acidic environment to produce commercial iron concentrate. Tailings of wet magnetic separation of magnetite containing 24.5% Fe and finely disseminated hematite ore containing 51% Fe were processed to produce iron concentrates with a yield of 15% and 50%, respectively, containing approximately 65% Fe and 5% of silica. Hematite flotation tailings had the highest content of gold (up to 0.09 - 0.11 g/t), while in other products it never exceeded 0.02 g/t. Using a Knelson concentrator was able to recover 40 to 45% of the gold into 3.31 g/t Au gravity concentrate. The success of gravity concentration is due to high gravitational contrast of gold to mostly quartz and aluminosilicates in the hematite flotation tailings. In general, the proposed process can be used as a solution to the challenge of selective concentration of finely disseminated iron minerals."

The sedimentary phosphate deposit of Bayovar is located in a very dry area of Peru (desert of Sechura) which is close to the Pacific coast. It consists of seven superposed layers (beds) which call for different strategy of concentration. The ore is composed predominantly by apatite (84% in weight basis) plus silicates (16%). In order to treat the ore from beds 1-5, a suitable standard mineral processing circuit (composed of scrubbing, screening, attrition and desliming) started its operation in 2010, yielding 3.9 Mt/y of concentrate assaying 30% of P2O5. To concentrate phosphate from beds 6-7, however, it is necessary to carry out further cationic reverse flotation of silicates, at neutral pH, to yield a concentrate, which meets market specification. The new process was developed in laboratory scale by a collaborative program conducted between Vale S.A. and the University of Sao Paulo-Brazil. A pilot plant has currently been running in order to confirm the very good results yielded in laboratory scale. The successful accomplishment of flotation in the current beneficiation flow sheet will enable a capacity expansion of 1.9 Mt/y of concentrate assaying 30% of P2O5. As water resources are very limited at Bayovar region, all the steps of concentration, including flotation, must be performed with seawater, which must be continuously recycled. This work addresses some relevant topics related to the use of seawater in the reverse cationic flotation of silicates: influence of temperature, water quality (ageing and chemical composition) and collector type (ether amine versus condensate). The results indicate that condensate amine works better than ether amine. If flotation is conducted with the former collector, the separation process is able to tolerate changes in temperature (25-40oC) and water quality caused by either evaporation or ageing. Low-grade bauxite with A/S of 4.4 from Henan province was used as raw material and the selec-tive grinding of bauxite, grinding efficiency, particle size and Al2O3 and SiO2distributions of ground products were investigated using ball and vibration mills. The results show that the selective grinding can be used to realize the separation of aluminum from silicon within a certain particle size. The optimal grinding conditions of the ball mill with bauxite are as follows: grinding material to charge ratio, 1.2, charge volume ratio, 40%, pulp con-centration, 70wt%, medium size distribution, F30mm:F20mm:F15mm=20%:50%:30%. Under the conditions, the weight rate of ground product with A/S over 7.5 is 27% and the recovery of Al 2O3is 30%. The optimal grinding condition of the vibration mill with bauxite are as follows: grinding material to charge ratio, 0.9; charge volume ratio, 70%; concentration, 70%; medium size distribution, F40mm:F30mm:F20mm=20%:30%:50%. Under the conditions, the weight ratio of ground product with A/S over 7.5 is 25% and the recovery of Al 2O3is 27%. The research is significant for the rational and economical utilization of the low-grade bauxite.

"MANGOTE Surface oxidizied mine is a gold-bearing deposit in Congo's Mai-Ndombe Province. In the past decades, the ore has been exploited in a crude way by local farmers, which directly causes the severe processing difficulty and lack of economy of cyanide leaching. Hunan Research Institute for Non-ferrous metals (HRIM) is currently investigating options to recover gold through understanding the mineralogical characteristics of MANGOTE surface oxidized ore. Chemical analysis , X-ray diffraction(XRD) and Quantitative Evaluation of Minerals by SCANing electron microscopy (QEMSCAN ) were conducted on samples from mine site. The bulk analysis results showed that gold separation of gold from gangue minerals was feasible after grinding the ore samples to 86.53% -74µm and adjusting the pulp specific weight at 100g/L, and gravity separation was conducted with using spiral chute after grading of fine particles. The research results highlight relationship between mineralogical characteristics of abandoned ore and economy of comprehensive utilization that might be directive experience to similar cases. INTRODUCTION The occurrence state of gold in natural gold minerals determines the basic recovery and recovery effect of gold(Komnitsas, C., & Pooley, F. D. 1989). The occurrence of gold in the ore refers to the form of gold in the ore.Generally the existing state of gold can be divided into four major categories according to the viewpoint of the dispersion system: independent minerals and gold, a coarse dispersed system;colloidal gold, a colloidal dispersion; solid solution gold, is atomic ion dispersion; adsorptive gold, according to the adsorbed particle is the micelle or ion, respectively is a colloidal dispersion or ion dispersion(Mao, S. D., & Yang, R. S. 2009; Liu, J. "Molecular modeling of clusters of major bismuth minerals, Bi2S3, was carried out whereby molecular models of minerals and reagents clusters were created. Their HOMO and LUMO energy levels were calculated and using known modelling equations, the absolute hardness ?, eV and electronegativity were calculated. The charges of separate atoms of clusters and the change of properties of the minerals were determined which allowed predictions of the flotation properties of raw ores containing rare bismuth minerals. Modeled complexes containing the clusters of minerals and various collectors were constructed, consisting of atoms and bonds within clusters of minerals. Major physical and chemical parameters were determined for the complexes created, including the total and electronic energy. Based on the energy calculations, predictions of the collector efficiency were proposed. The efficiency of collector was established for various thiolic reagents, the compounds of phosphorus (III) and mixtures of reagents. Theoretical results were checked and confirmed against laboratory ore flotation tests. A gold-bismuth-magnetite ore type was studied where gold, bismuth and iron (magnetite) are of industrial interest. The ore contains 2.8 g/t Au, 1.0 g/t Ag, 0.26% Bi, 45% Fe and 1.25% As. Sulphide mineralization can be mainly found in the form of pyrrhotite, pyrite and arsenopyrite. Bismuth can be mainly found in the form of bismuthite and native bismuth. Gold is fine. A flow sheet for Zhelezny Kryazh ore treatment was proposed. This flow sheet consists of grinding to 95-98% -74 µm, sulfide flotation with two cleaner with xanthate addition, cyanidation of flotation concentrate and flotation tailings included treatment with with CaO (6 kg, 6 hours), cyanidation (8 hours) and CIL (8+24 hours). Saleable products are gold doré, bismuth and iron concentrate."

With better under-standing of chemistry of the mineral species and strict control of bricks manufacturing/processing conditions can be better produce efficiently, a low cost high quality bricks with minimum detrimental environmental impact.

The self-heating of sulphides can be a major hazard in mining operations and concentrate handling, particularly during transportation and associated storage. Self-heating results from the oxidation of sulphide minerals and can vary from being insignificant to potentially hazardous to life and infrastructure. It is essential that there be a reliable test methodology that can categorize a given sulphide material as to its self-heating potential. By their nature, sulphide ores and concentrates are complex and variable mineral combinations making it difficult to predict their self-heating behavior a-priori based on mineralogy or with a simple "snapshot" test. Furthermore, self-heating behavior will depend on the state of oxidation of the sulphides as well as time, temperature and humidity. A review of available testing apparatuses and protocols that can be used to assess self-heating potential is presented. Each of these methodologies was examined in relation to its ability to predict the latent self-heating hazard of a sulphide material. Several of the methods were compared to illustrate their strengths and weakness. The results indicated that a number of the test protocols may produce false negative indications of self-heating potential, constituting an obvious concern to the industry.

Utilisation of Low-Grade Iron Ore Fines after concentration not only helps in conservation of the mineral wealth, but also substantialsly improves the economics of iron ore mining. There has been need to develop suitable beneficiation process for upgradation of low-grade iron ores towards their rational utilisation. Presently the circuit adopted for processing iron ores has limitations in reduction of alumina. The depletion of high-grade reserves, utilisation of low-grade reserves coupled with in-creasing market pressure for improved product quality necessitates re-examination of the process flow sheets and evaluate alternative or supplemental processing routes. The main objective of the Process amenability studies for utilisation of Low-Grade Iron Ore Fines (-10mm) is to get Pellet grade concentrate with +65% Fe (min), SiO2 1.8% (max), Al2O3 1.8% (max) and other proportionate constituents by adopting suitable beneficiation techniques and to collect the relevant data (Quality and Quantity of the Products) for the process development. In an effort to formulate a conceptual process flow sheet, the Process amenability studies for utilisation of Low-Grade Iron Ore Fines (-10mm), which is lying at a mine site in India, samples were collected and taken up for the study. The efforts of R & D of NMDC are discussed in this paper. Low-Grade Iron Ore Fines (-10mm) sample assayed 60.10% Fe with 3.48% SiO2 Aland 4.48% 2O3from 40 microns to 300 microns. The sample consists of hematite as the chief ore mineral followed by minor amounts of maghemite. The gangue minerals include quartz and ferruginous clay in which quartz occurs as medium grained where as ferruginous clay occurs as fine to sub microscopic size mineral. The economical processing route evolved out of the studies finally could yield a final concentrate constituting 58.63% by weight along with Iron unit?s recovery of 63.51% assaying 65.10% Fe with 1.48% SiO2 and 1.85% Al2O3route that adopted comprises the following operations. Making slurry in a sump pump followed by grinding in close circuit with 48mesh size Screen. The -48 mesh size product was subjected o the Cycloning to remove slimes. The Cyclone Underflow product was subjected to Floatex Density Separation (FDS) to separate fine heavy minerals from the gangue minerals. The FDS Underflow was collected as concentrate. The FDS Overflow product was further subjected with Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separation (WHIMS) to recover more Iron units as magnetics. A conceptual process flow sheet was evolved, which may become the prelude to the subsequent finalisation of the process flow sheet for commercialisation.

"The triboelectric charge attributes of feldspar, quartz and wollastonite minerals, after contacting different triboecharging medium made of different materials, were considered. Their charge acquisitions by different size fractions of minerals were monitored and accordingly their energetic work function values were estimated. Moreover the separation behaviours of these minerals through the electric field of a laboratory free falling separator were determined and the effects of some chemical reagents on separation their separation characteristics were studied.Finally an attempt was made to translate the findings from single mineral systems to a complex silicate ore, containing quartz, feldspars, wollastonite and some other silicates. The results show favourable prospect to apply the triboelectric separation technique for beneficiation such a complex raw material."

"The characterization of reagent-mineral interactions in flotation systems of finely intergrown ores holds difficult challenges for the applicability of standard techniques like Hallimond tube tests and contact angle experiments or renders them impossible due to a lack of sufficient samples in terms of quality and quantity. This disadvantage may not apply to more sophisticated techniques, but these often do not work in an aqueous environment. We present the utilization of an atomic force microscope with a hydrophobic colloidal probe to characterize the wettabilities of individual mineral domains of an ore sample, while additional spectral information is gathered by Raman spectroscopy. The exemplary ore sample investigated is mainly containing cassiterite and quartz, therefore the reference measurements like Hallimond tube tests and contact angle experiments were carried out with this binary system as a comparison. The focus of the study lies in the correlation of data gathered by the atomic force microscope and the Raman spectrometer with data from standard techniques. Finally, the applicability of the colloidal probe atomic force microcopy technique for reagent-mineral investigations is critically evaluated.INTRODUCTIONThe focus of this paper is the application of colloidal probe atomic force microscopy (CP-AFM) for theinvestigation of reagent-mineral interactions on a binary system of cassiterite and quartz. This and similar concepts using hydrophobic AFM probes have been applied by multiple authors (Rudolph and Peuker, 2014a; Rudolph and Peuker, 2014b; Wada et al., 2017; Xie et al., 2017). The hydrophobic interaction is the main interacting mechanism for the hydrophobic colloidal probe with hydrophobic sample surfaces and the long range attractive component has been accounted to nanobubbles on the interacting surfaces (Yakubov et al., 2000). More detailed information on nanobubbles are available in two reviews compiled by Attard and Hampton (Attard, 2003; Hampton and Nguyen, 2010). This paper is based on the work by Rudolph and Peuker comparing different AFM based measuring concepts, additionally gathering data with Raman spectroscopy and correlating results of microflotation and CPAFM measurements (Rudolph and Peuker, 2014a; Rudolph and Peuker, 2014b)."

Batch wise adsorption tests for platinum (Pt) on the surface of activated carbon pellets (Norit RO 0.8 BET surface area 1100 mg/g) were carried out in mixed chloride solution. The purpose of this study was to assess and compare the adsorption performance of amine-treated activated carbons (AACs) and native activated carbons (NACs) in terms of adsorption capacity and selectivity. The effect of pH and temperature on adsorption capacity and selectivity was established. The amine- treated ACs were prepared by anchoring the amino groups (butyl amines) on the surface of AC pellets in aqueous media and the UV-Vis was used to determine the amount of amine sequestered from solution by ACs. The dosage of butyl amine on the surface of ACs averaged 0.15 g/g, carbon. The adsorption mechanism was described by the ionization and complexation model whereby interaction between the protonated AAC surface and the anionic chlorocomplex ions (PtCl5 [H2O]-, PtCl62-) proceeded by either electrostatic attraction or/and by covalent bonding [(NH3)2PtCl6 or (CH2COO)2PtCl6]. By comparison, the adsorption capacities of Pt on amine-treated ACs and native ACs were 53.8 mg/g and 33.03 mg/g, respectively which highlight the benefits of anchoring functional molecules on ACs. The selectivity of AACs was influenced by solution pH. Pt adsorbed selectively on the surface of amine-treated ACs at pH<1.5. The highest separation factor that was recoded pertained to Pt and Fe species (ßPt/Fe = 90) then followed by Pt and Ni species (ßPt/Ni = 30) or Pt and Cu species (ßPt/Cu = 15). The lowest separation factor was recorded for Pt and Cr ions (ßPt/N= 5). Adsorption kinetics of Pt on amine-treated AC surfaces, according to the first and second order reactions, were investigated and results showed that rates were in the order 10= 5). -4 min-1 and 102 g?min/mg, respectively. The pseudo 1st order kinetics predicted the adsorption capacity of 51.81 mg/g which was almost similar to the experimental value (53.8 mg/g) while the second order rate equation predicted Pt adsorption capacity of 40.1 mg/g. Both The Langmuir and Toth isotherm fitted the Pt adsorption at pH < 1.0. The Freundlich isotherm tended to underestimate the adsorption capacity of AACs.

The aim of the present paper is to review the current technologies for arsenic removal in the copper metallurgical industry, and to show the progress made with some promising emerging strategies, involving the pre-treatment of copper-arsenic concentrates by selective flotation or by alkaline leaching with Na2S-NaOH solutions. The advantages of alkaline leaching are the selective dissolution of arsenic and antimony, the high extraction yield, and the practically nil loss of copper, which remains in the clean copper concentrate as a CuS residue. Alkaline ?cured? ? a procedure similar to ?acid-cured? in conventional leaching ? improves arsenic extraction and reagent consumption, making this an interesting technology for the treatment of high As-Sb concentrates. In light of recent advances on the selective flotation of enargite and tennantite, the importance of redox conditions to control the flotation/depression of enargite-tennantite from copper sulfides has been well established. However, problems of selectivity must still be solved. Additionally, the limitation imposed in some cases by the need to recover the molybdenum by-product must be considered. The application of selective flotation to obtain a high-arsenic or ?dirty? concentrate and its sub-sequent treatment by the alkaline leaching process is suggested.

Most of the iron ore washing plants set up in India consist of sizing of the ore by dry / wet screening, washing and classification by screw classifiers followed by multi-stage hydrocycloning of screw classifiers? overflow. The underflow of the hydrocyclones forms the concentrate which is used for pellets making. As the cut-point of hydrocyclones is generally at 20 microns, relatively lower diameter cyclones in a cluster with parallel feeding are used. This is found to, often, result in choking of the spigots, at times, by extraneous material as well reporting along with the slurry. It is observed to lead to sub-optimum performance of the cyclones with loss of iron values into cyclone overflow and thereafter into tailings. Analysis of data of an operating beneficiation plant (Beneficiation Plant - 1, BP - 1) of M/s Jindal South West (JSW) Steel Limited, Karnataka, India over a period of one year indicated that weight recovery of the concentrate from two-stage hydrocycloning was 45% (with respect to feed to the cyclones) and assaying 63.43% Fe, 4.43% SiO2 and 2.32% Al2O3. CSIR - National Metallurgical Laboratory - Madras Centre (NML - MC), India developed flotation process for processing screw classifier overflow with a view to improve the recovery of ultrafine iron values from it. Detailed investigations at laboratory scale flotation column and on-site pilot plant trials proved that the production of the concentrate and productivity of the plant could be enhanced by adopting reverse cationic column flotation technology. It was established that a typical screw classifier overflow analyzing 60.54% Fe, 5.95% SiO2 and 3.67% Al2O3 could be upgraded to 64.21% Fe, 2.64% SiO2 and 2.20% Al2O3 with 82.7% weight and 84.7% Fe recovery. This translates into an increase of 80% in weight recovery of the concentrate compared to what is being obtained, at present, by two-stage cycloning. It had an added advantage of reduced SiO2 in the concentrate. Thus, SiO2 in the final concentrate could be reduced to 2.64% from 4.43% by adopting column flotation. The concentrate so generated meets the stringent specifications, especially in terms of alumina in it(should be less than 2.50%) for pellets making. Later, JSW Steel Limited set up the flotation plant in BP - 1 based on the process developed by NML - MC and was commissioned in 2010. The effective utilization of the energy in comminution devices depend on how efficiently the broken particles leave the breakage field as soon as they reach product size. In crushers the transport of broken particles smaller than CSS is done by gravity (vertical) thus allowing the energy to be applied to new particles. However, in AG/SAG mills, gravity becomes the energy field and the transport of particles is horizontal which needs a suitable discharge mechanism and has been found to have significant effect on grinding efficiency. The material transport in AG/SAG mills depend on how efficiently the discharge system (grate and pulp lifters) operates. Material transport plays a significant role on efficiency of horizontal grinding mills ? AG/SAG/Ball mills. The magnitude of benefits that can be achieved with efficient material transport in AG/SAG mills has been demonstrated in a Greenfield milling operation at Mirabela Mineração?s SantaRita Nickel operation located in northeastern part of Bahia in Brazil. This grinding circuit was commissioned in October 2009, which was designed as a typical SABC circuit to grind 4.6 mtpa (575tph) to produce a P80 of 125um with 10-12% ball charge in SAG mill. However, it has been operating as ABC circuit without any grinding media in SAG mill. The nameplate design capacity has been achieved in few days and has gradually increased to an average of +800 tph and still it is operating in ABC mode. The milling circuit commissioning resulted in small and relatively simple measures to rectify, which was reflected in the rapid commissioning of the milling circuit and it achieved the nameplate capacity within days. The Santa Rita grinding circuit consists of one 30?x 15.4? 8.5MW SAG Mill fitted with Outotec patented Turbo Pulp Lifters (TPL TM ) in close circuit with HP400 short head pebble crusher and one 20? x 28.4? 5.5MW Ball Mill in closed circuit with Warman cyclone cluster fitted with 10 x 26? CAVEX cyclones. This paper examines the comminution design process, operating philosophies, experiences, post commissioning optimization, and future development works. "The first 90 years of the last century generated a considerable volume of technical literature on the subject of grinding mill power and its prediction. It is therefore surprising that during this time there were no published models for predicting grinding mill power draw which were validated using a wide range of comprehensive industrial scale data.Notwithstanding this lack of data, the majority of models placed limited emphasis on the internal dynamics of mills and relied on simple assumptions which considered the charge to take up a fixed position and shape.Laboratory based studies (Liddell, 1986), and industrial data (Morrell, 1993), showed that these assumptions did not hold over a wide range of operating conditions, and brought into doubt the ability of the (then) existing models to accurately predict grinding mill power draw. Furthermore no model treated AG,SAG and ball mills as a single class of devices whose power draw could be predicted with the same equations.Through a detailed investigation of the charge dynamics, coupled with a large data base of industrial mill power draws, this situation was rectified by the end of the century, by which time a model had been developed and validated, which accurately predicted the power draw of all wet tumbling mills. This paper describes this model and reviews some of the earlier attempts at mill power modelling."

The concept of adsorption or separation of platinum anions from base metal cations in chloride media using native or chemically modified activated carbons has been discussed in various journals within the context of batchwise systems. In our research work, a fixed-bed column, loaded with native and amine-immobilized activated carbon pellets (Norit RO 0.8), was used to study selective adsorption of platinum ions from chloride media at different flow rates, bed depth and initial metal concentrations. The kinetics, mass transfer characteristics, breakthrough data and separation factors (ß(Pt/Fe) and ß(Pt/Cr)) were quantitatively analysed and modeled. The bed-depth service time (BDST) model was used to model the breakthrough curves successfully in fixed-bed columns and also the dispersive diffusion in the radial and axial directions of the bed were evaluated. The inner diameter of the column was 3 cm and the bed depth was between 1.0 cm and 2.5 cm. Concentrated 4 M HCl acid solution was used to elute the fixed-bed column. It was demonstrated that amine-treated activated carbons provides superior separation factors between platinum and base metals (Fe, Cr). Results showed also, that 95% saturation was reached within 10~26 hours depending on the nature of ACs at a flow rate of 11 mL/min and initial concentration of 5 ppm.

"The flexibility of the PlantStar control platform has enabled Mintek to investigate and easily develop new control strategies for both milling and flotation. This includes a Solids Feed Controller, a Safety Limit Controller, Mill Power Optimiser and Flotation Optimiser, amongst others.The solids feed controller was developed for minerals processing plants using a specialised time delay compensator. Using conventional time delay compensators that are purely model based, results in robustness problems due to model uncertainties. The Mintek Solid Feeds Controller makes use of a plant model, but compensates for model inaccuracies, giving more controller stability and a more robust delay compensation algorithm.The safety limit controller has been developed to switch smoothly between normal and safety control loops without bumping the process. The safety loop output is chosen in accordance with a predefined list of priorities and whether the respective constraint boundaries are exceeded.The Mill Power Optimiser helps to find the power peak on the mill power curve. This insures maximum grind with maximum throughput. It also prevents power dips due to mill overloads, making the milling circuit easier to operate.The flotation optimiser algorithm analyses trends of all accessible variables in the process. The algorithm uses this information to calculate operating conditions that will control the residence times, mass pulls and circulating loads within a flotation circuit to a specified setpoint. Research is being done to now optimise these setpoints in order to achieve better recovery."

"The goal of prospecting operations in the Republic of Altay was to locate gold-sulfide-quartz mineralization. For this purpose we applied the technology of electromagnetic sounding and induced polarization (EMS-IP). These operations resulted in localizing promising sites with presence of sulfidization. The EMS-IP method proved to be highly efficient amongst other prospecting methods targeted at recognizing zones of sulfide mineralization making up 91%, considering that in more than half cases the ore intervals were the case. In the Yakutian diamondiferous province the EMS-IP technology was approbated during three field seasons to accomplish the assignments on searching for kimberlite bodies under conditions of various geological types. As a result, the reference objects were distinguished, and geoelectric parameters of kimberlite pipes of explosion were defined.INTRODUCTION In the time span 2015-2016 in Gorny Altay the EMS-IP technology was approbated in the Novokuznetsk area. The on-land areal geophysical survey was performed by EMS-IP method applied to identify, outline and locate promising sites with Au-Ag-bearing polymetallic mineralization within surveyed areas. Compared to the hosting rocks, the sulfides contained in polymetallic mineralization are typified by low specific electrical resistivity (SER) and high polarization. The areal survey conducted via EMS-IP method provided spatial characteristics of searched object. From July 2016 to August 2017 our expedition group carried out serial test works and laboratory investigations intending to define performance capabilities of EMS-IP technology in searching for kimberlite bodies under conditions of diverse geological types. The prerequisites for serial work were operations accomplished at the «Listvenichny» site lying 35 km away from Mirny town in the Sakha Republic (Yakutia), where the EMS-IP technology was probed for locating position and measuring geoelectric parameters of tuff pipe «Buardakhsky». After successful completion of operations it was decided to evaluate geoelectric parameters of kimberlite pipes of explosion."

"The first 90 years of the last century generated a considerable volume of technical literature on the subject of grinding mill power and its prediction. It is therefore surprising that during this time there were no published models for predicting grinding mill power draw which were validated using a wide range of comprehensive industrial scale data.Notwithstanding this lack of data, the majority of models placed limited emphasis on the internal dynamics of mills and relied on simple assumptions which considered the charge to take up a fixed position and shape.Laboratory based studies (Liddell, 1986), and industrial data (Morrell, 1993), showed that these assumptions did not hold over a wide range of operating conditions, and brought into doubt the ability of the (then) existing models to accurately predict grinding mill power draw. Furthermore no model treated AG,SAG and ball mills as a single class of devices whose power draw could be predicted with the same equations.Through a detailed investigation of the charge dynamics, coupled with a large data base of industrial mill power draws, this situation was rectified by the end of the century, by which time a model had been developed and validated, which accurately predicted the power draw of all wet tumbling mills. This paper describes this model and reviews some of the earlier attempts at mill power modelling.INTRODUCTIONThe early 1900?s saw the beginnings of published papers which tackled the problem of what influenced the power draw of tumbling mills and what equations (models) were suitable for predicting power draw. This interest continued for the rest of the 20th century and the literature contains many papers that attempted to satisfactorily answer these questions. A common and disappointing theme in the majority of them, however, is the distinct lack of suitable experimentally derived power draw data. This deficiency consequently limited the practical application of many of the attempts at modelling mill power draw. Prior to the early 1990?s some limited data on the power draw of grinding mills in the literature can be found, but as Harris et al (1985) remarked they are ?... too frequently unusable simply because one or more essential variables have been omitted?. The absence of published results, from vigorous experimental testing of the various models, has resulted in a general lack of evaluation of the validity of assumptions and hypotheses that such models contain. Harris et al (1985) however, did make some efforts in attempting to evaluate the performance of various power prediction equations and in so doing further developed a semi-empirical one of their own. However, in using manufacturers? published data, which themselves were undoubtedly generated by proprietary equations of unproven validity, they probably succeeded in generating little more than a consensus of the various errors in these models."
