"A new method for the hydrometalfurgical treatment of refractory gold arsenosulphide concentrates is presented. Themethod involves a combination of' finegrinding, intensive agitation, flotation, and cyanidation, and consists of leaching of -10u pyrite and arsenopyrite particles in alkaline solution under intensive agitation without the application of costly high-pressure and roasting techniques. Consistent extractions of gold, in excess of 96%, are achieved.IntroductionConventional methods of alkaline leaching of gold arsenosulphide concentrates in an autoclave» and under electrochemical oxidation( 2) require expensive equipment as well as high-cost energy and reagents. In other cases, processing of gold concentrates inelude: ultra-fme grinding, calcination at 200°C to 250°C with the addition of an oxidant (NH4NOJ followed by alkaline leaching of the resulting calcine with hydrogen peroxide, the latter being a complicated method yielding poor extractions of gold (89% to 90%). In this paper, a hydrometallurgical method is described for processing refractory gold arsenosulphide concentrates in which alkaline leaching is followed by cyanidation of the residue."

"Areas of bubble contact were delineated for cassiterite in the presence of chloride, fluoride, sulphate, phosphate, oxalate and citrate ions using dodecylamine hydrochloride collector. The limits of pH, and the minimum collector concentration were established using the bubble pick-up technique.Bubble contact did not occur below the p.z.c. (point of zero charge), estimated to be 4.7, in the presence of chloride ion, and fluoride ion showed only a weak response in the same pH range. These anions are considered to act as indifferent electrolytes. Activation at pH values below the p.z.c. was obtained with sulphate, phosphate, oxalate and citrate ions; the greatest response was by oxalate and phosphate ions extending pick-up to between pH 2.0 and 2.5.Activation appeared to be strongest when anionic protonated species were in maximum concentration. Strong activation also corresponded to the formation of very stable metal ion species, thought to be formed on the surface of cassiterite, between exposed stannic ions and modifying anions; dodecylammonium ions being absorbed on the surface so modified."

A series of experiments examined silver extraction from a high-grade sulfide concentrate employing thiourea solution. Thiourea was initially oxidized with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to form formamidine disulfide (FADS) and used to extract silver from the as-received concentrate and after various pretreatments. Very low recoveries (~30%) were obtained with the as-received concentrate due to competitive cementation reactions by metallic iron and easily oxidizable copper phases. Over 80% Ag recovery was obtained when the concentrate was pretreated to remove this iron and copper. The results suggest that an oxidative acid pretreatment of this concentrates significantly improves silver recovery upon leaching with thiourea.

Grain refinement is effective to enhance strength and ductility of metallic materials. However this advantage has not been utilized fully for magnesium alloys in industry because microstructure control through thermomechanical treatment is difficult owing to their poor deformability. The authors proposed a high-speed heavy-reduction rolling for production of Mg alloy sheets. It was found that the deformability is significantly improved at high speed and that the thickness can be reduced 60% by one-pass operation even at room temperature without fracture at the rolling speed higher than 1000 m/min. In this study, commercial AZ31B sheets were rolled at 2000 m/min between room temperature and 350°C, and quenched immediately after the rolling. The sheets rolled at 200°C show the finest recrystallized microstructure with the mean grain size of 2.2 Rm. They show outstanding mechanical properties with the tensile strength of 293 MPa, and the elongation of 25%. It is concluded that high-speed rolling is very advantageous for grain refinement and improvement in mechanical properties as well as deformability and productivity.

"The Canadian Carbonization Re-search Association was formed during 1965, with seven founding members representing four integrated steel companies, two coal companies and one high-temperature tar processing company. The purpose of this paper is to review the circumstances which led to the formation of this new research association and to discuss its general objectives. Also discussed will be the organization of the Association, the nature of its relationship with the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources in the early stages, and some of the technical programs which have now been initiated."

The Uranium Province of Lagoa Real is located in the mid-south region of Bahia State, Brazil. Uranium is the only mineral wealth, occurring mainly in the form of uraninite. The region has been searched for uranium since 1971 and 35 anomalies were detected, distributed over 1200 km2. Seven are now taken as deposits, accounting for reasonably assured resources of 100.000 tons of U3O8. This paper describes the geological aspects of the area, the exploration and mining activities done so far by the state company INB and the perspectives for the near future, when a raise in the country?s uranium demand is expected.

"ACCOMPANYING Alberta's great natural endowments of oil, wheat, scenery, fishing, and hunting is also a generous endowment of geophysical problems to plague the interpreting geophysicist. These problems — by no means unique to Alberta — are sufficiently numerous and outstanding to be of major concern in exploration. Some of them have been adequately solved, others are well on their way to being solved, and still others remain almost completely unsolved. Often a problem readily solvable in one area can be solved only with great difficulty in another. Many are closely allied with the geological conditions and require the best co¬ordinated efforts of the geologist and geophysicist for their solution.It is a fairly general practice to study rather carefully the geophysical characteristics of known producing reefs in order to obtain data on which to base an interpretation of unproven areas. This practice obviously has a very sound basis, for, as discoveries become more and more widespread in the Alberta basin, it is found that the variation' in geological conditions has a marked effect on the seismic results, as would be expected. By carrying this analysis over an area it is possible more and more to anticipate the geophysical picture which should be obtained in connection with reefing under the varying geological conditions. Another phase of this procedure, and one that has received less attention, though it is certainly of importance, is the analysis of the all too numerous failures. A study of these failures may be more fruitful than a study of the successes for it may indicate weaknesses of field procedure, computations, or in¬terpretation not particularly obvious in the discovery areas. These studies must not only include the geophysical characteristics of the observed `anomalies', but should also be coupled with a thorough geological study to ascertain whether some unanticipated geological condition is responsible for the erroneous geophysical interpretation."

Arsenic reports in the effluents of many non-ferrous metallurgical operations. The production of scorodite, a crystalline ferric arsenate, is considered as an attractive option for the fixation of arsenic from aqueous effluents. However, scorodite solubility and long-term stability in the pH region of interest for tailings disposal have not been thoroughly investigated. In this study the long-term stability of scorodite in the pH 5 to 9 region and the mechanism of scorodite dissolution were studied. Construction of eh-pH diagrams indicated that scorodite stability is highly dependant on the nature (stability) of co-existing iron-hydroxide/oxyhydroxide. It was also found that when scorodite dissolves, a ferrihydrite phase having very small particles size (nano-scale) forms and that the growth and crystallization of this material are delayed by the presence of arsenate even under accelerated (75°C) ageing conditions. Around neutral pH and ambiant temperature (22°C) scorodite seems to reach an equilibrium with ferrihydrite after 48 weeks yielding soluble arsenic concentrations < 5 ppm.

The paper outlines the main objectives of the project that concern the evaluation of the possibility of uranium production from indigenous resources since Poland enters the nuclear program. The best available technologies are considered for uranium extraction and obtaining the yellow cake - U3O8. Liquid-liquid extraction with novel extracting agents, as well as membrane processes for separation of by-products will be tested in course of the project. The technological part will be completed with techno-economical analysis. A brief outline of production methods and processes is given to show how maintenance fits into the picture at this plant. The work force, and the tools needed to carry out this function, are then described. Preventive maintenance practices, scheduled annual shutdowns and routine check-downs are explained, especially as related to planning and to the materials and labour involved for a mini-mum downtime. A brief explanation of the materials, sup-plies and spare parts program, as well as the part played by the Stores Department in conjunction with the Maintenance Department, is given. Cost control and equipment expenditure indicators are explained. Some specific examples of maintenance jobs are described in order to show the flexibility of the program. S HERRITT GORDON Mines Limited has been in continuous production, except for the planned downtimes needed for expansion tie-ins, or the annual shutdown check-over periods, since the first shipment of nickel on a commercial basis in July of 1954.

"Threshold limit values (TLVs) for NO and NO2 have been reduced drastically in 2016. Emissions of diesel engines have been reduced in the last decades. In many cases this is not enough to stay under required TLVs. Remaining gas in the blasted rock is set free during loading and transport. At the end, only a combination of measures with a further reduction of diesel motor emission, replacement of diesel driven vehicles by electric equipment, new explosives with reduced NO and NO2 production, changes in the organization and effective ventilation measures can ensure that the TLVs are not exceeded. KEYWORDS Blasting fumes, Gas measurement, Gases, Threshold Limit Value (TLV) SHORT HISTORY OF EXTRACTION OF RAW MATERIALS The extraction of raw materials—besides haulage and transport—is one of the main processes in mining and tunneling. The principal objective is the creation of a material which can be transported from the place of extraction (face) to another place for further processing or direct use. Furthermore, recently a desired grain size distribution has become more important. A revolutionary development took place in the course of centuries. With the use of primitive tools like shovels, chisel and iron in the 12th/13th century in Freiberg, ore mines performances of 12 16 cm per man and week could be reached in cross section of 1 m2. Recalculated with an assumed average density, this is a performance of 0.006 t/h. With the introduction of black powder into the subsurface in 1627 by Caspar Weindl in the city of Schemnitz (nowadays Banska Stiavniza), performances increased. A part of the hard extraction work was now done by the explosives. But first in 1767, it was recognized in a mine in Freiberg that more than 1 hole could be drilled (hand-drilling) and blasted. This discovery was so important that a plate with an inscription describes this event. The performance was increased more than 10 times compared to the extraction with chisel and iron. Since this time, drilling and blasting has been the most important innovation force for the increase of the performance. Problems with noxious blasting fumes led to the construction of the first tunneling machine by Henry Joseph Mouse in 1846 (beside shield machines from 1825) (Stack, 1982)). The triumph of mining machines started only interrupted by the two world wars. The development of hard rock boring machines (including roadheaders) was enforced after 1945. An almost complete extraction by hard rock boring machines was predicted for the turn of the millennium. And, indeed, one could find powerful machines in Canadian potash mines which were able to mine 1000 t of potash in 1 hour. That was an increase in the performance by several powers of ten. But already in the 1980s, it was recognized that the ambiguous goal could not be reached. Problems with wear of the tools, radius of curves, minimal length of openings, size and costs of the machines led to a more or less parity between drilling and blasting on one side and machines on the other side, of course depending on the field of use. For this reason, drilling and blasting is still the dominant extraction technology for raw materials. In the development of drilling and blasting technologies, the focus was mainly on the improvement of the safety but also on the increase of the blasting power and performance. Examples are tests for the increase of the power of ANFO explosives which were carried out in the 1970s and 1980s, in the former teaching mine “Reiche Zeche”. In the 1980s vehicles for loading and mixing of ANFO explosives have been developed, the blasting cab sensitivity of ANFO has been increased, emulsion explosives have been developed and up to now further developments like PMMA LOX EX explosives are on the way. At the turn of the millennium, 6 million t/a explosives have been used worldwide. Annual rates of increase of 2% have been predicted (Weyer, 1999). "In times of increasing energy cost and global demand for improved machine technology, the optimization of industrial mineral processes in terms of efficiency and production cost is an important factor when choosing industrial equipment suppliers. Of course this applies for screening machines, feeders and distributers as well!Besides of the ability of a screening machine for being adjustable to changing requirements during the production process itself, it becomes more and more important to choose the correct screening machine type, peripheral equipment for arising screening tasks and to optimize the overall design of the screening machine starting at a very early stage.The different types of screening machines bring many advantages and disadvantages with them. The selection of the correct type of screening machine can improve the flow rate, energy, efficiency, yield, quality, output, availability and decrease the maintenance costs and structural steel work.The machine optimization has to be a consecutive process in which at any time results of simulation and “real-life measurement” are compared and the findings are implemented in machine development and design. As an example, it is possible to reduce machine weight and reinforce the steel structure of a screening machine at the same time, which enables the manufacturer to use smaller drives for the screen.This paper will present the methods ANSYS and 3D Solid Works used at RHEWUM GmbH for this way of optimizing machine design and construction and examples for results gained from this continuous improvement process."

"With the increase of human engineering activities, global climate change and active plate tectonics movement, the giant landslide frequently occurred in southwest China, which caused huge property and human losses. Besides, the potential landslides pose severely threaten to the construction and operation of airports, railways, highways and power stations etc. In order to provide accurate guidance for the landslide investigation, stability analysis and mitigation, the giant landslide is redefined according to landslide volume, depth of slip surface, complexity of landslide mechanisms, and degree of landslide mitigation difficulty, and classified with the typological classification approach based on the twofold attributes of landslide behavior including formation mechanisms and reactivation features. Finally, the threefold particularity of the giant landslide is also summarized, which enables a more effective landslide mitigation design.INTRODUCTIONWith the increase of anthropogenic activities, global climate change and active plate tectonics movement such as continual uplifting of Qinghai-Tibet plateau and strong earthquakes, the occurrence of giant landslides was in ascending trend in southwest China (Huang, 2009), which caused serious destruction, and greatly endangers such engineering construction from safety, time and economic aspects as airports, railways, highways, power stations, etc. Giant landslides have huge scale, complex formation/reactivation mechanisms and mechanical behavior. They may not be identified during the hazard investigation, but may be firstly initiated or reactivated due to the following engineering activities, heavy rainfall or strong earthquakes. Consequently, the landslide mitigation is inevitable and costly. However, it is difficult to control the deformation of giant landslide with lack of a correct understanding of genetic mechanisms (Marui, 2012; Zhang, 2000) and the excessive large sliding forces of the slide blocks calculated by the conventional limit equilibrium method. For instance, the failure of anchored pile wall for the No.102 giant ancient landslide (Zhu et al., 2012) and stabilization measures for the Sidi Rached viaduct landslide(Guemache et al., 2011); four rows of piles had not prevented the occurrence of the No.12 landslide in a high fill slope in the Panzhihua airport (Li et al., 2012)."

"Since the late 1970s, a major R&D program has been under way in Canada to assess the concept of disposing of nuclear fuel wastes in deep plutonic rock. Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd . (AECL), a federally-owned corporation, has been given the responsibility of directing this research (Rummery et al., 1983).The Underground Research Laboratory (URL), constructed in a granite pluton 15 km east of Lac du Bonnet, Manitoba (Fig. 1) is a major component of the Canadian Nuclear Fuel Waste Management Program. A diverse geotechnical experimental program is being carried out during both the construction and operating phases of the URL. This program involves detailed geological mapping, rock mechanics and hydrogeology studies, and geophysical surveying, to characterize the rock mass surrounding the shaft, and it has been described by Simmons et al. (1983). As part of the construction-phase program, ground-penetrating radar (GPR) surveys are being carried out during excavation, in an attempt to delineate fractures both ahead of the excavation and behind the walls of the excavation. This paper presents the results of surveys performed during shaft excavation and describes a procedure for plotting the data.Ulricksen (1982) cites examples of radar surveys to evaluate surficial deposits, such as peat, sands and gravels, and cavity detection in subsurface hard rock. Fowler (1981) used radar for fracture and clay vein detection in coal seams.In Canada, pioneering work in GPR has been done by Annan and Davis since the mid-seventies (Annan and Davies, 1976). Their work concentrated on problems relating to permafrost in the Arctic ."

A four-year study was carried out to determine the ability of coniferous trees to aid in the reclamation of uranium tailings at Elliot Lake. Five species were planted: white cedar, white spruce, jack pine, scotch pine and red pine. More than 570 bare-root, two-year-old seedlings were planted on bare tailings and in areas of established grasses. A further division was made between areas of coarse and fine tailings. Over-all survival and growth of the trees has been far below expectations based on previous experience with several varieties of grasses. The criteria for assessment have been per cent survival and yearly growth as determined by plant height. Pine was superior, with 68% survival when planted in bare coarse tailings, 45% for vegetated coarse tailings and 34% for vegetated fine tailings. Cedar had the worst survival rates at 49%, 14% and 7% respectively. No species survived on bare fine tailings. The survival and growth of the coniferous trees have been related to species, environmental conditions and tailings properties.

Due to always getting stricter environmental legislations as well as increasing land filling fees the efforts for treating residues from metallurgy are continuously increasing. In case of filter dusts from metallurgical industry, the high zinc bearing electric arc furnace (EAF) dusts or also dusts from secondary copper industry are important sources for the recovery of secondary zinc oxide. Because of low capacities for secondary zinc concentrates (like Waelz oxide) in primary zinc metallurgy, the upgrade of such concentrates to a quality that meets the requirements of high quality (technical) zinc oxide becomes more and more important. This would open the opportunity to break into new markets and use it for example directly in electrolytic galvanizing. Therefore this paper will summarize possibilities for an elimination of halogens from secondary zinc oxides. Furthermore selective volatilization trials, with a synthetic mixture according to the analysis of Waelz oxide, were carried out to remove impurities to achieve an upgraded product quality.

"Outotec&apos;s direct leaching process is an atmospheric leaching process for sulphidiczinc concentrates. The direct leaching process, based on special leaching reactors developed by Outokumpu and leaching know-how, is the most economical way to produce electrolytic zinc. The newest industrial-scale application of Outotec&apos;s direct leaching process will be started up in 2008 in China at Zhuzhou smelter. The process isintegrated to the existing production plant, replacing part of the old production facilities by modern technology and increasing the production capacity significantly. The process equipment supplied by Outotec includes also tailor-made reactors designed on the basisof the work and experience of Outotec Research Centre."
