The economics of gold differs from that for base metals mainly because a large component of gold demand is investment or stock demand whereby the metal is purchased and stored for monetary or anxiety motives rather than fabricated into industrial products.The second major component of gold demand is fabrication, principally into jewellery but also, to some extent, into industrial products.Supply to the Western private- gold market comprises non-Communist mine production, Communist sales (chiefly from the USSR), and, finally, net sales by the Western Central Banks, which have total stocks of about 35,000 tonnes and which are sometimes net buyers as well as sellers.The different components of demand and supply fluctuate from year to year.

Although most N.S.W. coal mines contain large amounts of combustible materials such as coal and timber, the introduction of mechanisation has extended the range of combustible materials now found underground. The role of combustible material in a fire is not clearly understood and as a result the assessment of these materials for flammability by small and large scale tests is doubtful. Extensive research has been carried out on the toxic and irritating gases evolved during the combustion of plastics. However, most autopsies report death due to carbon monoxide inhalation because the combined toxicity of smoke and fire gases is unknown.

Despite the limited literature regarding the pressure filtration of mine tailings (compared to the large number of papers published each year on paste thickening of tailings) the number of mines dry stacking filtered tailings is approximately equal to the number of mines storing tailings in paste form. Main drivers for filtering tailings are: water recovery, future rehabilitation costs for tailings storage area and permitting requirements. In arid climates, the cost and scarcity of water justify the capital and operating costs associated with pressure filters. Further justification for filtered tailings is the potential for progressive reclamation of the dry stack, which can proceed earlier and faster than the reclamation of a tailings dam.Filtered tailings must be transported to the storage area by trucks or conveyors. For dry stacking, 70 - 80 per cent solids content (by mass) is typically acceptable, however the primary goal is to provide a filter cake that is consolidated and dry enough to prevent bridging and build-up on the materials handling equipment. It has been observed that high average solids contents (~70 per cent) can be achieved while the centre of the filter cakes is still wet and sticky, presenting challenges for the transportation of the solids. Appropriate controls must be in place to ensure consistently easy to handle solids are discharged from the filter.FLSmidth has installed two fine coal tailings dewatering systems in the United States. One of these systems incorporates a Deep Cone Thickener« upstream of the filter press to minimise the amount of water that must be filtered, while the other tailings filter press is fed by a high rate thickener. Reliable sampling practices are the key to optimising the market value of a mining or chemical companyÆs stock. As a result, reliable sampling standards are needed. However, current standards on sampling present the æuniversalÆ Pierre GyÆs Sampling Theory in an ambiguous way. For example, the Total Sampling Error is divided into its basic components only in informative annexes, when it should clearly be the main body of the standard. Sampling standards are presently loaded with statistical concepts that actually belong in the annexes. Furthermore, many non-probabilistic sampling procedures are still mentioned which do not belong in a standard. The objective is not to criticise existing sampling standards, but to suggest better ones. Sections on the Sampling Theory should divide the Total Sampling Error into a sum of its nine basic components. Then, and only then, should they be addressed one at the time. Sections for establishing a sampling protocol should address the in situ Nugget Effect, the Fundamental Error, the Grouping and Segregation Error, the Long Range Quality Fluctuation Error, and the Periodic Quality Fluctuation Error. Sections for sampling methods, mechanical sampling, manual sampling, grab sampling, sampling of trucks, railroad cars, bags, and drums should be part of the critically important practical implementation of a recommended sampling protocol, called Sampling Correctness. It includes the increment Delimitation Error, the increment Extraction Error, the Weighting Error, and the Preparation Errors. Unless these errors are addressed one at a time, in an unambiguous way, the standard will remain ineffective in solving sampling problems for the industry. Therefore, a strategy is needed to create better standards required at the early stages of new projects, both by manufacturers of sampling equipment and by engineering firms. A logical sequence of important points that cannot be ignored in any sampling standard is presented. An analysis of the practical use of the words sampling uncertainty versus sampling error is recalled. Finally, as a practical example, an in-depth analysis of the correctness of cross-belt samplers is presented, and emphasis is placed on the correct ways to perform bias-tests for mechanical sampling systems.

After reviewing the many excellent papers being delivered here, it is apparent that we are all concerned with the same general subjects of commodity agreements, international cartels, and anti-trust problems as well as the impact of governments on resource management and minerals pricing. Accordingly, as a relative newcomer to the mining business, I feel that my most meaningful contribution can be made by taking a more philosophical look at the future of our system of democratic capitalism. Unfortunately, governments the world over seem intent on jeopardizing the high standards of living resulting from the Industrial Revolution and furthered by the emergence of its by-product, capitalism. This tendency is particularly germane to the basic natural resource field, since government regulations, controls, and intervention in mining far exceed even the constraints normally imposed on hard-pressed consumer-oriented businesses. Increasingly, many governments seem to feel that natural resources no longer belong to private individuals but rather are the property of the state to be developed in a regulated manner and usually in a way directly contrary to the functioning of the free market system.

Classifications of Ni-Cu deposits are based on petrology, geochemistry and the geotectonic setting of host igneous bodies (Naldrett and Cabri, 1976; Besson et al, 1979; Nadrett, 1989). The four major classes in Naldrett's (1989) division rest on the geotectonic setting of the igneous complexes and the classes are further subdivided on the basis of the petrology and geochemistry of the intrusion. A more common subdivision of mafic and ultramafic igneous rocks is based on the environment of rock-forming processes, endogenic or exogenic, intrusive or extrusive, and this subdivision has been applied, in practice, to the classification of sulphide Ni-Cu deposits, too. The extrusive deposits, Class I in Naldrett's (1989) classification, are directly related to volcanic processes whereas all the others refer to the intrusive environment. This paper looks at the differences between the extrusive and intrusive groups of Ni-Cu deposits and presents generic, genetic and structural features of the intrusive group.

The published safety policy of Mount Isa Mines Limited, together with details of the organisation and control techniques adopted by management to pursue an active safety programme within the company, is presented. The importance of communication by management through the organisational hierarchy and procedures instituted to ensure rapid and concise feedback on safety concerns are detailed. The paper also describes the role of the occupational health department and safety committees in assisting management to monitor the safety effort of supervisors and employees. Current safety performance levels are tabled together with details of some aspects of the programme on which safety effort will be concentrated in the future.

This study used structural equation modelling (SEM) to develop a series of models to explain the impact of work-life balance on employeesÆ perceptions of job performance, job satisfaction, turnover intentions and absenteeism. The sample comprised 257 participants (108 males and 149 females) from a range of occupations and levels of seniority. In sum, the results clearly demonstrated that successful work-life balance is associated with higher levels of job performance and worker satisfaction and with decreased levels of absenteeism and turnover intentions. The data also lent support to the impact of employeesÆ coping styles, schedule flexibility and supervisor support on employeesÆ abilities to balance work and life. It is concluded that tangible benefits to an employerÆs bottom-line can be anticipated from organisational initiatives to assist employees to better balance their work and personal lives.

The integration of iron rejection as hematite with the Sherritt two-stage zinc pressure leach process has been investigated on the laboratory scale. The two-stage pressure leach process is applicable for a greenfield zinc plant, or for replacement of the conventional roast-leach circuit in an existing zinc plant. An excess of zinc concentrate is used to accomplish acid neutralisation in the first stage of pressure leaching, and the residual concentrate in the first stage residue is treated with an excess of acid solution in the second stage of pressure leaching to yield high zinc extraction. Integration of hematite precipitation with this process allows for the potential sale of the iron residue, greatly decreasing the residue disposal problem. Two flowsheets containing the desirable features of both of these processes are described in this paper, along with laboratory Results.

This work aimed at evaluating the acid rock drainage (ARD) potential of five samples of a Brazilian gold sulfide mine in a decommissioning process. Three of the most traditional ARD prediction techniques, Standard Acid Base Accounting (Std ABA), Modified Acid Base Accounting (Modified ABA), as static methods, and humidity cells as a kinetic method were tested. Both the Std ABA and the Modified ABA results indicated an acid generation potential for some of the studied samples. In the other cases the results were inconclusive. The five samples were then submitted to humidity cell tests during 27 to 30 weeks. At the end of the period, the leachate pH was stabilised in a range from 3.4 - 4.1 (four samples) to 5 (one sample). The presence of relatively high levels of sulfate and dissolved metals was detected throughout the operation, specifically, Ni and Zn, and less frequently, As. These findings are discussed with the help of the samples mineralogy and Eh-pH diagrams. The results obtained in this investigation indicated potential environmental risks of this mining area. In this particular case, the kinetic tests were shown to be essential to the identification of the samples ARD potential.

Using a new highly stable automated electron microprobe analyser, detection limits for gold in arsenopyrite have been improved. Using the AuLA emission tine at 40kV and 500nA, a limit of approximately 10gpt is attained in 10- lSmins. Some unusual features of the background need to be taken into account. Several ores containing different levels of gold in arsenopyrite have been examined, and it has been shown that gold is not evenly distributed between grains (some may contain more than 1%, invisible optically), and that the grains containing gold are often zoned. Gold may be released from the arsenopy rite by weathering or by heating in an inert or slightly oxidising atmosphere.

Since the introduction of the Neil George Five Point Safety System, to the underground sections of The Zinc Corporation, Limited and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited mines in March, 1969, the Disabling Injury Frequency Rate has been halved and shows signs of contin- uing to fall. The total accident frequency rate has also fallen, although the decrease has not been as significant. Before the introduction of the Neil George Safety System, analyses of the direct causes of accidents showed that approx- imately 25 per cent were caused by "unsafe conditions", while 75 per cent were attribu- table to "unsafe acts". Within twelve months of introducing the system, these percentages had significantly changed to 7 per cent unsafe conditions and 93 per cent unsafe acts. Today, the figures are 3 per cent and 97 per cent respectively, and these figures clearly show that the main emphasis in the current programme must be directed towards making the operating men safety conscious. The effort must be focused on changing the minds of men.

The Peak Gold Mines Pty Ltd (PGM) operations are located approximately 9 km south of Cobar, NSW. PGM currently mines and treats ore from three separate orebodies within 5 km of the original plant. Production from the original Peak orebody ceased in April 2002, with ore currently sourced from underground at New Occidental and Perseverance, while New Cobar supplies ore from an open cut mine. In March 2003, Wheaton Minerals Asia Pacific purchased the operation from Rio Tinto who operated the mine for around ten years. The Perseverance deposit is situated between 600 and 1000 m south of the Peak orebody. Access is via shaft from Peak to 630 m below surface and then by decline to the northern end of the deposit locally known as Zone A. Development of the resource commenced mid 2002 to set up for a long hole open stoping operation at 25 m level spacing. The first production stope was successfully brought on line December 2003. The Perseverance deposit is hosted by sediments and volcanics along the eastern margin of the Devonian Cobar basin and is one of many deposits with the Cobar Gold Field. The Cobar Gold Field has produced approximately 2.5 million ounces of gold since 1880. The Perseverance area had long been considered prospective due to the presence of old workings at the southern extensions of Peak line of lode. Significant mineralisation was first discovered at Perseverance in 1994 when PGM drilled a hole targeted 950 m below the historic workings. The target was based on an apparent plunge to the stratigraphic controls to the Peak Orebody. Subsequent exploration within and around the ægreaterÆ Perseverance area has been significantly aided through the use of downhole electro-magnetic surveys due to the close spatial association between gold and sulfide mineralisation.

Most Geologists have a well rounded knowledge of the exploration phase and those who have worked as mine geologists have an understanding of the production phase. Few have had exposure to the development and the construction phases. Even fewer have had the experience of closing a mine, disposing of the plant and equipment, carrying out the final cleanup and making the area safe and environmentally acceptable.During the various phases of exploration, the geoscientist gains a wealth of non-geological information which can be of considerable value to engineers and technicians in the feasibili-ty, development, operation phases and finally the closure of a project. Such basic controls as surveys, adopted assay sample lengths and the location of items of infrastructure during exploration, may continue to affect the project through its entire life. Thus the geologist's responsibilities extend well beyond the explo-ration phase of a project.

The producers of mineral sands on the East Coast of Australia might be regarded as having a simple task of selling Rutile and Zircon. Such is not the case. Differing quality and grain size requirements plus the dramatic increase in the percentage of mineral sold in a processed form have meant a large increase in the number of different end products handled. The resulting sales control problems are compounded by the need to be able to deliver against a large number of separate contracts which may relate to spot or long term sales in small quantities or in bulk shipments. Methods of helping management control this situation have been devised and incorporated into a suite of computer programs. Experience with the approach has been very satisfactory. The effect of changes to shipping schedules, commitment to new or changed orders, or proposed changes to production can be evaluated as and when necessary with little bother. Big Bell Mine started experiencing relatively large mining related seismic events, and accompanying rockbursts, from February 1999. Twelve rockbursts damaged access development from February 1999 to June 2000, with severe damage extending for up to 100 m along footwall drives. Five seismic events associated with the rockbursts were recorded by the AGSO, measuring 1.9, 2.2, 1.7, 2.4 and 2.2 on the Richter scale. These events affected 485 and 460 footwall drives in August and November 1999 and 535 footwall drive in June 2000 (drive level nomenclature is equivalent to the depth below surface and RL). After the third event (July 1999) it was apparent that the seismicity was not a once-off phenomenon. This (sudden) onset of seismicity required management to implement a series of precautionary measures:to ensure the safety of the workforce, to maintain continuity of production, and to reduce rockburst damage rehabilitation. The measures included extended re-entry periods and exclusion zones in high-risk areas, improved rockburst resistant support systems in areas prone to damaging seismic activity and improved support systems in areas prone to shakedown damage. A full-scale minewide ISS seismic system was ordered in October 1999 and commissioned in February 2000. A portable eight-channel CSIR-Miningtek system was installed at short notice as an interim measure in August 1999. This CSIR system covered the northern producing stopes, where the majority of the rockbursts had occurred. The objective of the seismic monitoring was to monitor relative activity and to determine trends with regards to time and location. MAP3D numerical modelling was used to investigate the relationship between seismicity and various combinations of stress components to assess the relative seismic risk in both current and proposed working areas. This information is used to determine where and at what stage in the mining cycle the rockburst resistant support is required. Analysis of the seismicity has determined two distinct modes of seismicity û small-scale localised, high frequency events in high stress areas and larger events related to shear along previously intact foliation surfaces. This paper includes a summary of the seismic history, seismic data analysis, support system design, mine design adjustments and management action to minimise the effects of seismic activity at Big Bell Mine.

Gold-bearing polymetallic sulfide deposits are common in Serbia, and mostly occur in the Karpato-Balkan and, to a lesser extent, the Serbo-Macedonian metallogenic province. These deposits û Coka Marin (Majdanpek), Grabova Reka (Blagojev Kamen), Lece (Medvedja) and Veliki Cip (Boranja) û are dominated by Cu and/or Pb-Zn mineralisation that contains a variety of Pb, Zn, Cu and Fe (¦ Sb, As, Bi) sulfides and sulfosalts, as well as native elements. Gangue minerals are composed of quartz, carbonates and rare silicates and barite. Based on their gold content these deposits can be divided in three groups:1. Polymetallic deposits with a high gold content (>1 g/t).2. Polymetallic deposits with an intermediate gold content (0.1 to 1 g/t), and3. Polymetallic deposits with a low gold content (<0.1 g/t). Gold occurs as native gold or as an alloy with silver. Native gold ranges in size from 5 to 20 ¦m, with a few rare grains over 100 ¦m, as isolated grains or as microveins (in the first group of deposits). Its distribution within the deposit in uneven. Native gold in the second group is smaller in size (1 - 5 ¦m, rarely 20 ¦m), where it is uniformly distributed in a quartz-silicate matrix. The third group is of no economical importance. The subject of research has been the first group of polymetallic deposits.

The Taharoa ironsand deposit is 1600 hectares in size and is located 144 km south of Auckland on the west coast of the North Island, New Zealand. The sand predominantly contains heavy mineral-rich sediments, quartz, and feldspars. One hundred and two samples were collected from all areas of the mine, from the stockpile, black sand areas, tailings and Te Akeake Sands. Samples were collected with the primary focus on the next predicted mining path and secondly on gaining a good geographic spread throughout the mine. All samples were analysed for the dry, wet and particle density, the porosity and the magnetic, non-magnetic and clay minerals content.Stockpile samples had an average magnetic mineral content of 92 percent. Dry, wet and particle density values for stockpile material exceed all values from untreated ironsand samples with average values of 2.8g/cm3, 2.9g/cm3 and 4.4g/cm3 respectively. Black sand samples from the mine came from various areas such as the central area, the forest, the southern area and the benches. All black sand samples are remarkably consistent, with dry and wet density values between 2.3 û 2.5g/cm3 and particle densities that range from 3.7 to 3.9g/cm3. The porosity values are comparable to all other areas of the mine (average 37 per cent). The tailings and Te Akeake Sands have different physical properties due to their different mineral contents. The dry, wet and particle densities are all lower than that of all other areas with averages of 2.1g/cm3, 2.2g/cm3 and 3.3g/cm3 respectively. These lower values reflect the lower magnetic mineral content (average 18 per cent) and the associated increase in non-magnetic mineral content (average 78 per cent).
