Microbial desulfurisation of coal has significant advantages over physicochemical desulfurisation processes since the former process selectively removes the inorganic sulfur compounds and heavy metals without significant carbon loss. The purpose of this study was to improve the desulfurisation yield of a coal sample from northeastern coalfields, Assam, India using microbial technique. The coal sample contained 2.13 per cent of total sulfur and 2.59 per cent of ash. Stirred tank reactors of 40 L capacity were operated in batch mode. Initially, the reactor was fed with 40 L of slurry containing ten per cent (w/v) coal, ten per cent (v/v) inoculum of mixed culture of mesophilic acidophiles, native to coal itself and the requisite amounts of constituents for 9K medium without added ferrous sulfate. The percolate of the reactor was then used to seed the medium for the next experiment. The purpose was to obtain a better adapted and more active biomass which would give a better desulfurisation yield for coal. Further studies were conducted in the bioreactor, fed with 40 L of slurry containing ten per cent (w/v) pulp density of coal, ten per cent inoculum (derived from previous studies) and the medium, supplemented with ferrous sulfate. Results showed an increased total desulfurisation yield of 43 per cent in the latter treatment in comparison to the previous one, where the desulfurisation yield was only 23 per cent. The findings also demonstrated the convenience of using inocula derived from coal, where 50 - 60 per cent of pyritic sulfur was removed, while chemical desulfurisation is of little significance with the majority of coal types. The ash content was also reduced to 1.74 per cent as the low pH of the process caused dissolution of a number of common minerals present in the coal.

The Accha-Yanque zinc belt in southernPeru is a major zinc-lead rich metallogenic province. In the belt are comprised several non-sulfide-type occurrences, extending on the periphery of the Yauri-Apurfmac batholith (Oligocene-Miocene). Zinc mineralisation at Accha (almost fully oxidised) occurs in breccias of sedimentary and tectonic origin in the limestone of the Ferrobamba Fm (Middle to Upper Cretaceous). Non-sulfide association consists mainly of smithsonite and hemimorphite replacing both primary ore minerals and carbonate host rocks. Mn(hydr)oxides and Zn-clays (sauconite), can be locally very abundant. Differences in mineralogy of the ore and gangue minerals, as well as the composition of the host rock can have a profound impact on zinc recovery and reagent consumption, and therefore on the economic value of the deposit. Martite-goethite high-grade iron ore deposits that show no trace of hydrothermal alteration may extend to more than 200 m below the permanent water table and are typically saprolite with evidence of exposure to the physical, chemical and biogenic processes of soil formation restricted to the low-grade goethitised upper levels. Typically no evidence of the prior presence of chert bands is discernable within the ore yet it has been assumed that these ore deposits derive from cherty banded iron formation (BIF) through supergene leaching of the chert bands and thus classified as supergene iron ore deposits. The fact that chert bands are absent and that these ore deposits are highly weathered does not prove supergene leaching of the chert bands. Quartz is one of the most resistant minerals to chemical weathering within the saprolite and large scale dissolution of quartz is absent from all other quartz-bearing saprolites, yet this unlikely process is accepted without question as the origin of the most abundant form of high-grade iron ore deposits. It is proposed that martite-goethite high-grade iron ore deposits formed only from BIF in which chert bands were absent prior to weathering. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. The Central Coal Mining Research Institute has developed the MAE acoustic emission monitoring system, the BD4-1 portable acoustic emission monitor and the MRB rock burst monitoring system. In the MAE system there is an IBM-PLAT, a receiver and 16 channels and the investigating range is 100 m. The main functions are detecting acoustic events from the working faces, periodically making statistics, prints, displays and storing of the results, and performing the off-line process such as drawing the curves of acoustic activity. The BD4-1 instrument has four channels, it works for more than 24 hours continuously, and keeps the data for more than 30 days after power tum-off. The BD4-1 is suited to the monitoring for a long or a short time as a fixed point where the system is invalid, especially to the monitoring of the acoustic activity promoted by the blasting. There is an IBM-PC/AT, a receiver and 16 channels spread 10 km in the system MRB. The system could on-line collect microseismic events throughout the whole mine, calculate the source location and the energy, and off-line draw the seismic activity draft of time-based or distribution in space. In practice, the forecasting is successful by using the acoustic emission and microseismic monitoring system and the portable instrument.

This paper examines the use of the FrothSim flotation simulator to improve the performance of an industrial column flotation cell. The performance of an industrial retreat column cell is simulated, and, from the discrepancies between the simulated and experimental results, a problem with the wash water distribution is postulated. The scientific reason for the reduced performance with uneven wash water addition is described in detail. Further simulations indicated the potential for improvement with an even wash water distribution, resulting in both improved performance and reduced wash water usage. The simulated uneven wash water distribution was confirmed industrially, and the headers were redesigned and installed. A sampling campaign to compare the performance before and after the modifications showed that the flotation performance was improved dramatically, with a statistically significant decrease in gangue recovery, without a commensurate reduction in valuable mineral recovery.

Fluid bed sulphation roasting of bismuth concentrates began at Warrego in 1980 in con- junction with the recommissioning of the Tennant Creek Smelter. This process, develop- ed by Peko Mines, is used to separate copper and bismuth by converting copper minerals to a water or weak acid soluble form and then leaching. Pilot scale testwork conducted at the Australian Mineral Development Laboratories (AMDEL) and by Dorr Oliver Pty Ltd in the USA indicated that close control of bed teaper- atures and exhaust gas composition was required to ensure high levels of soluble copper. After overcoming some initial problems, the plant now achieves typically 89 percent copper extraction. Plant capacity is 2.7 tonnes/h by design but in practice this is limited by feed analysis, air requirements, cyclone operation and calcine particle size Consideration.

The Canadian Cordillera contains numerous classic porphyry deposits and several unusual subtypes, including the alkaline suite of porphyry Cu-Au deposits and the Tombstone magmatic suite and associated Au¦W deposits. The alkaline suite formed in collisional settings in island arcs whereas the Tombstone suite was emplaced in an active fold and thrust belt in a continental arc. In addtion to different regional settings, these suites differ in the type of underlying basement, metallogeny, and the styles of mineralization. Both magmatic suites were emplaced over short intervals, probably in response to specific tectonic events. In the case of the alkaline suite, the tectonic event promoted magmatic processes suitable for the formation of porphyry Cu-Au deposits. The tectonic environment is less well constrained for the Tombstone suite, but the result was the formation of distinctive porphyry and intrusion-related Au¦W deposits.

A thousand writers have harped upon the wondrous nature of the inventive faculty. They realise that man is a creator, and that capital and labour alike are, and will always be impotent without machinery and processes that is invention. What Bacon has said is echoed by them all, "the introduction of new inventions seemeth to be the very chiefest of human actions. The benefit of new inventions may extend to all mankind-they make all men happy without injury to 'any' they are new creations and imitations of God's own works." My remarks will occupy another field I will refer to some of those features of the Patent Laws of different countries, which prevent the use of new inventions, oppress the development or inventive' genius, and diminish human happiness and progress' Wherever Patent Laws are framed and administered upon wrong principles, these results are inevitably found. A concise, complete, common-sense comparison of the chief Patent Laws of the world cannot easily be found but to avoid seeing scrappy, misleading references to Patent Law in the press particularly the English-would be equally difficult. Writers who are considered authorities so frequently make minor issues prominent and so uniformly fail to give weight to fundamental principles that the effect on the public is to mislead.

Corrosion is a chemical or electro-chemical attack on a metal by the surrounding medium, and it can be stated in general terms that a non-corrodible metal possesses that property either because there is no chemical action between it and the medium, or because the medium reacts quickly with the metal to produce a thin protective coating.When iron or steel is attacked by dilute mineral acids, for example, the products of the reaction are soluble and the formation of a protective film cannot take place; on the other hand, rusting produces a porous film which flakes away and offers little protection to the underlying metal. However, when chromium is alloyed with iron, its resistance to corrosion is improved because the films produced on such alloys become more adherent and tenacious as the proportion of chromium is increased. The purposes of defining the mining environment for underground mass mining and the uses of characterisation data are outlined. The requirements for data in the areas of geology, surface and groundwater hydrology, topography and environmental constraints and geotechnical studies are identified. Emphasis is then placed on the collection and interpretation of geotechnical data for establishing the in situ stress regime and for rock mass characterisation. Methods used for diamond drilling, core logging, borehole logging, data analysis and presentation, rock mass modelling and rock mass classification are outlined. Finally, recent and potential advances in the state-of-the-art are identified in areas such as geophysical methods, measurement while drilling, computerised data collection and analysis, rock mass modelling, in situ stress measurement data presentation and interpretation, and some applications of rock mass characterisation data.

Aluminium in Australia, and in fact all round the world, is made virtually exclusively by the Hall-Heroult process, whereby the metal is derived from the electrolysis of alumina dissolved in an electrolyte comprising fluoride salts. It is the distribution and control of these inorganic fluorides during and after the reduction process which go to make up the bulk of environmental problems associated with aluminium reduction smelters. The emission characteristics of fluorides from the process, the occurrence and effects of fluorides in the environment, and the control techniques wnich are applied in industry, all need to be taken into account in assessing the overall environmental aspects of aluminium Production.

Coal exploration and mine planning now use all the modem techniques to indicate geological hazards to a new or developing coal mine. Drilling, seismic and other sophisticated geophysical methods aim to increase the reliability of prediction of features which will inhibit mine development. But do they?. During the past 40 years, geological investigations for coal mines in New South Wales have ranged from the general observations of Eric Rudd, in the Southern Coalfield in the late 1940s to the very detailed examinations of roof strata by John Shepherd and others in the 1980s. Then, the large scale regional relationships between sedimentary and structural features often were ignored as the minute examination of seam roof strata became fashionable.

The Bureau of Mines equipped a longwall shearer with a water- jet-assisted cutting system and measured dust levels during the cutting of a simulated coal block. The block was cut dry, at a conventional water spray pressure of 1 MPa and with water-jet-assisted cutting pressures ranging from 7 to 40 MPa. At water pressures of 20 MPa and higher, dust concentrations were reduced by as much as 85 % via water-jet-assisted cutting in comparison with conventional water sprays. This reduction was achieved without any increase in the water flow rate.

Getting it right is a very profitable outcome. Shareholders would ideally like to see their directors get it right all the time on the major economic decisions. But it is very difficult for mining directors to get it right all the time in such an uncertain environment. Primary decision-makers of companies with significant stakes in the mining industry should get it right much more frequently. The legal measures of evidence (beyond reasonable doubt and on the balance of probabilities) can be used to determine whether grade estimates (a key revenue variable) are realistic. The application of this approach can be far reaching. More frequently correct decision-making would result in more effective allocation of limited resources (capital and labour). In turn, this would result in higher financial returns and a more extensive mining industry.

Many high temperature industrial processes involve gaseous halogen-bearing environments. Essentially, these fall into three subject areas: power generation, waste incineration and especially extractive metallurgy. Fundamental to any understanding of the process chemistry and efficiency in the process technology is an adequate knowledge of background thermodynamics relating to metal-chlorine reactions. In this context, existing free energy/temperature diagrams for metal chlorides do not include many elements, in particular the so called refractory elements from Group V and Group VI of the Periodic Table, namely niobium, tantalum and vanadium, and molybdenum. This paper reports estimation and calculations of the free energy values for these chlorides. The data is discussed in the context of high temperature chlorination processes.
