The equation of continuity for the hydrogen reduction of hematite in a fixed bed of closely-sized particles is solved assuming a flat velocity profile, negligible temperature gradients, md negligible axial diffusion. A kinetic expression from the literature is used which assumes the reduction process is controlled at the oxide-metal interface. The integral fractional conversion is computed, and the importance of particle diameter, flow mte, temperature, bulk axial diffusion, and inter- and intra-particle mass trarnsfer is predicted. Comparison with experimental data suggests one or more additional undefined variable(s) is significant. Equipment modifications are suggested for fidture experimentcll work. WITH the increasing desire to "design" the ore feed of a blast furnace, it has become necessary to define more quantitatively the process variables and to evaluate the extent of their control upon the reduction process. The bulk of the work reported in the literature has centered about the reduction of single particles; however, the blast furnace process more closely resembles reduction of a fixed bed than that of single particles. To simplify this analysis, the isothermal reduction by hydrogen of a natural hematite in a fixed bed of closely-sized particles is examined. With appropriate modifications in the kinetic and flow rate expressions, the approach employed should be extensible to mixtures of carbon monoxide, hydrogen, and inert nitrogen, and to adi-abatic conditions, thus approaching the blast furnace process more closely. The fixed bed variables which are investigated in this study are particle diameter, flow rate, temperature, and bulk axial diffusion, as well as inter-and intra-particle mass transfer. Of particular interest is the effect of particle size upon fractional conversion for a bed operating under constant pressure drop. The constant pressure drop concept bears a close resemblance to the blast furnace process, where regions of larger particles may provide a greater permeability to divert most of the reducing gas flow from the regions of smaller ore particles. Under such conditions one would expect qualitatively that, for sufficiently small particle sizes where the flow rate is small and the total surface area is large, the reduction rate would be limited by the gas flow rate. Initially the gas entering the bed reacts very rapidly and the composition approaches the equilibrium conversion value a short distance from the reactor inlet. This concentration "wave-front" then moves up the bed as the flow of reducing gas is continued, leaving in its wake an ever increasing layer of reduced particles. Providing that the reducing gas leaves the bed at equilibrium concentrations, conversion is expected to increase with an increase in flow rate, and hence with an increase in particle diemater. Conversely, for sufficiently large particles the flow rate will be high but the surface area available for reaction will limit the reduction rate. Since the total surface area decreases with an increase in particle size, conversion, in this case, is expected to decrease as the particle diameter is increased. It is clear then that between these two extremes an optimum particle diameter must exist. THEORETICAL DEVELOPMENT Above the temperature where wiistite is stable (about 560°C) the reduction of hematite proceeds through the series Fe2O3/Fe3O4/FeO/Fe. On the basis of microstructural studies and earlier work, Edström1 has postulated a mechanism for the reduction of an ideal hematite lattice: 1) Iron phase formation at the boundary between wiistite, iron, and gas (for sufficiently porous iron). 2) Diffusion of iron across a wustite layer. 3) Phase boundary reaction of Fe3O4 to FeO. 4) Diffusion across a dense magnetite layer. 5) Phase-boundary reaction of Fe2O3 to Fe3O4. According to the mechanism postulated, gaseous reaction product has to be removed only at the boundaries between wüstite and iron or gas, the only possible exception being enveloped Fe3O4 specks. On this basis McKewan2,3 has proposed that one may consider the hematite reduction process as a simple two-phase system of oxide/metal. Cardox, which consists essentially of a steel tube containing carbon dioxide compressed to the liquid state, is a trade name designating a device used principally in coal mines to break down coal. The use of Cardox to break down coal was developed in the Middle Western coal fields around 1927 or 1928. At first, a large, heavy tube was used, requiring many parts. Through experimentation and technologic improvement, the weight of the tube has been brought down from 88 lb. to 20 lb. and the new, light tube makes use of larger volumes of CO2 at lower pressures than formerly was thought possible. This blasting method is extensively used today in coal mines and probably one tenth of the bituminous coal produced in the United States is prepared with Cardox. Construction and Application As used in the coal mine, Cardox looks like a piece of steel pipe 2 to 3 in. in diameter and 3 to 5 ft. long. When it is necessary to fire a shot, the tube is wired with two leg wires that are long enough so that when the tube is pushed the desired distance into the hole the wires will protrude 5 to 6 in. It has been found that No. 18 insulated copper annunciator wire is the best material for leg wires. A two-conductor rubber-covered shot-firing cable of sufficient length is then attached to the leg wires. A 2 to 6-volt current is applied, either by means of shot-firing batteries or the standard type of shot-firing generator. Upon the application of the current, the charge in the cartridge is set off. Because the breaking action upon the coal is supplied by the relatively slow physical expansion of the carbon dioxide gas rather than by the rapid chemical formation of gases as in more familiar explosives, the result is a slow heaving action, somewhat similar to that produced by black powder, rather than a shap detonating effect. Permissible powder does its work at roughly ten times the pressures in use with Cardox. The escaped gas from a Cardox shot apparently works along the planes of weakness in the coal face, such as the coal cleats, the edges of the cut, and along the top of the seam, breaking off the coal toward the free faces and heaving the mass of coal outward. Cardox tubes are manufactured in various sizes to take care of variable conditions of seam size, undercut depth, cleatage, coal hardness, and so forth. The tubes range in diameter from 2 to 3 in. (Table I) and the normal CO2 charge is from 24 to 96 oz. For any one tube size, several sizes of shear disks are available, thus excellent control of the type of shooting desired is possible. In general, local experience and experimentation dictate the size of tube chosen for any particular job. For high coal, and deeper or wider cuts, a larger size is chosen to start with, and the opposite is true for low coal, softer coal, or small cuts. INTRODUCTION IN the study of metallographic specimens in the electron microscope, there is need for a method of locating the same field in both the light microscope and the electron microscope. This need arises chiefly from the fact that in the electron microscope the magnification and degree of resolution are so much higher, and the field so much smaller than in the light microscope that it is often difficult, if not impossible, to identify positively what is being observed. The difficulty is increased by the fact that, because a transparent film replica of the metal surface must be used in the electron microscope, micro-constituents can be identified not by their color but only by their texture and contours. For these reasons it is desirable to obtain a series of photographs showing the same field in both microscopes in order that the appearance of common microstructures and micro-constituents in the electron microscope may be identified and catalogued for future reference. The need for a method of locating the same field in both microscopes arises also when it becomes desirable to enlarge in the electron microscope for more detailed study a particular interesting structure observed in the light microscope. Using the standard polystyrene-silica1,2 replica technique, in which the silica film replica is fished from the ethyl bromide on a 1/3 in. diam 200-mesh specimen screen, the possibilities of locating a particular area on the film in the electron microscope are rather remote. The desired structure may be obscured by the wires of the specimen screen or unrecognizable at the high magnification. A solution to the problem would be provided if a specially designed specimen screen, containing an opening which could be absolutely identified and quickly located in the electron microscope, could be fastened to the silica film replica in such a position that the desired field on the specimen would be located at the identifiable opening in the specimen screen. The design for such a specimen screen, a method for producing it, and a technique for fastening it to the silica film replica are described below. DESCRIPTION OF METHOD The Specimen Screen A simple design for a specimen screen containing an opening easy to identify and locate in the electron microscope is one with two lines of openings at right angles in the form of a cross. Such a screen is shown in Fig I. The opening at the center of the cross is identified easily and can be located quickly in the light microscope and in the objective image of the electron microscope. The specially designed specimen screens for this work were produced in quantity by electroforming. DURING an investigation into the effect of heat-treatment on the creep properties of the magnesium alloy ZW1, (1 pct Zn, 0.6 pct Zr), the previously published methods of final polishing were found to be unsatisfactory. A new diamond-polishing technique has been developed to facilitate the study of fine precipitates in this and other magnesium alloys, and is described in this note. The sectioning and coarse grinding techniques are those of Fox and Hall,' and Hess and Cieorge.' Pre- liminary mechanical polishing is done with 6-µ, and 1-µ( grades of diamond compound on 'Microcloth' using a lubricant of 'Hyprez' oil. When the conventional technique is used with a 1/4- µ diamond wheel for the final polishing of magnesium alloys, scratching is likely to result from the abrasive action of the 'Microcloth' nap on the soft metal surface. This problem has been overcome by the use of a cream on the wheel in order to separate the specimen surface from the polishing cloth. To prepare this cream, a solution of 6-ml tri-ethanolamine in 75-ml water is stirred into 12.5 g stearic acid at a constant temperature of 80° to 90°C. The cream is allowed to cool, and is then 'whipped' to a smooth consistency with 100-ml 'Hyprez' oil. Before polishing, the diamond loaded 'Microcloth' is moistened with a few drops of 'Hyprez' oil, then a small amount of cream is worked into the nap. For the best results a wheel speed of 500 rpm should be used for polishing, and the specimen should be held by hand with a light pressure while being rotated in the opposite direction to the wheel. After polishing it is necessary to swab the specimen thoroughly in methylated spirits to remove residual cream and oil from the surface in order to avoid uneven etching and drying stains. Fig. 1 shows the surface finish obtained on a specimen by polishing on a 1/4- ° diamond wheel using the cream, and Figs. 2 and 3 the precipitate observed in ZW1 after polishing, and etching for two seconds in nitric acid 15 pct in ethylene glycol. This new diamond-polishing technique has made a valuable contribution to the programme of metal-lographic research on ZW1 and has become a routine laboratory practice for other low alloy content magnesium alloys.

IN these days of the almost exclusive use of byproduct coke as the blast-furnace fuel in this country, it may seem out of place, and smacking too much of reminiscing, to say anything about the use of anthracite coal for blast-furnace fuel. Viewed in the light of present day research and of developments in alloy steel, some observations seem appropriate regarding this raw material that played such an important part in the development of the iron and steel industry during 50 years of the past century. The research work of that period, in which the whole iron and steel industry was revolutionized, passing from wrought iron to steel and from charcoal to three new mineral fuels for blast furnaces, was done chiefly in the full-sized plants of that day; and it was done largely by the ironmasters themselves. The laboratory had not become a part of the ironworks, and scientific instruments were lacking around the blast furnaces; "rule o' thumb" and erroneous theories prevailed-and have not yet all been eliminated. The recent interest in meteoric iron in connection with nickel steels and other alloys proves that it is worth while to search for the reasons for excellence and the causes for failures in the metallurgy of bygone days. Turner1 gives the reasons why the blast furnace of Dr. F. W. Geissenhainer on Silver Creek, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, about 10 miles northeast of Pottsville, was operated successfully with anthracite2 in August and September, 1836, and why several other attempts failed. It has taken a long time for us to find out that there are great differences in the behavior of anthracites from the several parts of the anthracite region, as well as differences in coking coals from the bituminous fields.

INTEREST in the sink-float plant operated by the Bunker Hill and Sullivan Mining and Concentrating Co. at Kellogg, Idaho, has recently been largely confined to the preparation and reconditioning of the galena medium. The ease and simplicity of these operations in a concentrating mill producing a flotation lead concentrate has occasioned enough comment to possibly justify a brief description. The subject is treated from an operator's viewpoint only; no effort is made to discuss it in a theoretical or technical manner. PLANT AT BUNKER HILL The sink-float plant was first operated in December 1941. It was built for the purpose of quickly increasing mill capacity with a minimum of equipment. It is the Huntington-Heberlein sink and float process using galena medium and is operated under license from the Sink and Float Corporation, New York city. Lead-zinc ore from the Bunker Hill mine is crushed to pass a I ¼ in. screen and is then washed and separated on vibrating screens having 4 ½ -mm. round-hole punched plates. The screen undersize, amounting to 33 per cent of the mill feed, is dewatered and sent to the ball-mill feed bins. The screen oversize goes to the sink-float plant, where 50 per cent of the oversize, or 33 per cent of the mill feed, is float, which is washed free of medium and disposed of as a tailing. The remaining 33 per cent is sink, which, after washing, is crushed to pass ½ in. and joins the undersize in the ball-mill feed bins. The normal plant capacity is 1700 tons per 24 hr. About 1.7 per cent of the total lead and 3.3 per cent of the total zinc in the feed is lost with the sink-float tailings (Table I). [ ] More complete descriptions of the H. H. process and Bunker Hill sink-float plant are given in several recent articles, listed at the end of the paper. PREPARATION OF MEDIUM AT BUNKER HILL New medium is made intermittently as needed, usually 12 hr. in each 6 days. A small portion of the current mill flotation concentrate is diverted from the lead cleaner cells to a I-in. vertical sand pump and pumped to a two-cell 36-in. Agitair flotation machine, where NaCn and ZnSO4 are added and the grade of concentrate is improved as shown in Table 2. Tailing from this operation is returned by gravity

SUBSIDENCE caused by mining operations has been a matter of interest for the mining engineer for just 111 years, since the Belgian Committee for study of subsidence in the city of Liege submitted its first report in 1825. This interest is fairly expressed in the enormous amount of literature that has since appeared on this subject. A bibliography, probably far from being complete, which preceded this study as a pre-liminary survey, comprises more than 800 titles. In spite of this fact the problem remains today as acute as it has ever been. The questions of as good a recovery as possible of the national resources, the safety of the operations, and the protection of private and public property are the important angles from which to look at the problem.

Any annual review of engineering progress in petroleum refining must of necessity include many features mentioned in earlier reviews. Advances do not spring mushroom fashion to wide acceptance overnight, but rather resemble rolling snowballs, gathering size and velocity as they progress. The new ideas of one year develop through the course of scattered adoption and testing during following years, to be ultimately discarded or to become an integral part of refinery engineering and operation. Polymerization and Cracking As an illustration, the publicity given to the polymerization and cracking of petroleum gases during the year has given many the impression that this is a new art. But patent and technical literature have disclosed active work on the problem dating back a decade or more and a unit capable of making 100 bbl. a day of polymer gasoline was constructed as early as 1930. Important strides have been made during 1935 looking to the more general commercialization of available processes, and some four important groups are furthering this work. In addition to the production of liquid products for inclusion as a constituent of commercial motor fuel, polymerization has also been a factor leading to the installation of a plant at the Houston refinery of The Shell Petroleum Corporation for manufacturing isooctane for aviation use, by making available dibutylene for catalytic hydrogenation Polymerization is not confined to unsaturated hydrocarbon gases as a source of raw material, and has been extended to include a preliminary decomposition of normal saturated gases under suitable heat and pressure conditions into the unsaturated types, which can then be used as raw material for the polymerization process. Thus there is opened up the possibility of eventually using large quantities of natural gas in the manufacture of high-grade motor fuels, although the early commercial growth will be largely on cracking still gases for economic reasons. Such utilization will result in a somewhat lowered drain on crude-oil reserves and a partial elimination of the

FLOTATION has been so closely allied with the sulfide minerals and their early and associated oily reagents that the term "oil flotation" has erroneously been applied to the entire flotation process. Today, the term "chemical flotation" might be used to advantage. Flotation literature has dealt primarily with the removal of sulfides from non-sulfide gangues, and the separation of one sulfide from another. Now, the application of the process to the separation of nonsulfide minerals is coming to the fore; and from the standpoint of the number of commercial minerals involved, the flotation of nonsulfides offers the larger field. Here, soap or soap-forming substances, such as the fatty acids and their derivatives, are used; hence there may well be a subdivision of the chemical flotation process called "soap flotation." Early experimenters learned that it was easy to form a froth or foam that would carry a part or all of the ore charge over the lip of the flotation machine; but this could not be regarded as flotation because of the lack of selectivity. Doubtless soap was one of the first reagents tried, and doubtless it was rejected on account of its gangue-carrying properties. Now this same gangue-carrying ability makes soap an acceptable reagent, for we are dealing with that, which among sulfides, is considered "gan-gue." As in the flotation of sulfides, so in the flotation of nonsulfides, the selective flocculation of the mineral and the dispersion of the gangue are the first objectives. In fact, these two phenomena epitomize flotation. They depend upon the unlike surface properties of the respective miner-als; and as long as the components of an ore have unlike surface proper-ties, a separation is possible, at least in theory. Often in nonsulfide flotation it makes little difference which mineral floats and which is depressed; generally only a separation is sought.

The Miller Number System is a well established method of measuring the relative abrasivity-friability of slurries, resulting in data that can be used in the selection of pump type and in forecasting wear-life of pumps and pipelines in slurry service. 1,2 Then after the pump type is selected, a Flow Analysis is determined by computer using pump design and operating parameters. This is used to determine pulsation control, suction requirements and stabilization, etc.

A critical literature review leads to a descriptive model of tumbling mill operation based upon energy partition concepts and the necessary requirements for particle fracture. As grinding proceeds into the ultra-fine region, conditions which are of little significance during normal operations gradually become controlling. These involve increasing resistance to fracture and an increasing tendency to aggregate as particles become smaller, and a growing fraction of the power input being consumed fruitlessly. The result is that fineness asymptotes to a maximum value as comminution proceeds indefinitely; thus where t is time, p and n are experimentally determined parameters, and Ø is a measure of fineness, which is presumed to be proportional to specific surface area, or proportional to the reciprocal of the size modulus (provided that the distribution modulus remains constant with time), or both. Ø, is the asymptotic value of Ø and is a measure of the grind limit. A method for its graphical determination is given. In a previous paper1 the physical and mathematical principles requisite to a study of the role of energy in comminution were reviewed. The micro-process of comminution — or the comminution event — can be investigated in terms of (a) the magnitude of the force-field localized around the individual particles which gives rise to the stresses generated in the particles, which in turn induces their fracture, and (b) the distribution of fragment sizes, should the event prove fruitful. The entire fragmentation operation can be considered to be the totality of its individual events, and in order to obtain a single independent variable of the process it is necessary to transform and sum the local stresses in terms of energy.1 This energy, however, will account for only a fraction of the energy input to the comminution process, the actual magnitude depending upon the kind of mill and several related factors. From the comminution viewpoint the primary function of a mill is that of stressing as many as possible of the individual particles of the charge to failure, with the maximum economy of energy expenditure. This is difficult indeed to achieve, for stressing a particle does not always break it, while the overwhelming portion of the energy input is involved with various internal mill processes which — almost incidentally — determine the magnitude, frequency, and manner in which the forces are applied to the particles. Essentially, these processes depend upon the mill dimensions, loading and speed, and they may be little affected whether fracture occurs or not. These processes must be delineated if a complete description of the role of energy in comminution is to be given; the energy account sheet1 (Fig. 1) in showing how the energy is partitioned for the requirements of the several functions it performs, provides a framework for the development of a model of the comminution process. Actual numerical values for the variables appearing in Fig. 1 will depend upon the mill, materials, and operating conditions. A possible general relationship between the variables will be suggested in this paper. Before proceeding further, a cautionary note must be issued. It was pointed out in an earlier paper' that while energy input is not changed by increasing the power and decreasing the time in the same proportion, and vice versa, the results of the process in terms of particle fineness may be different. Thus, although energy is chosen as the independent variable of a comminution process, it is not absolutely independent, and care must be exercised to ensure that it is used within its range of valid application. Time has the necessary independence, and it will be used in place of energy where it is appropriate. The residence time in a mill is usually of the order of minutes. Under these conditions the particles are subjected to "... a relatively constant fracture producing environment".2 However, under the more rigorous conditions of greatly extended time, which pertain in ultra-fine grinding, indications are that the fracture producing environment no longer remains constant; this is the major subject of this paper. At this extreme limit the mill is probably taxed to its utmost, and at the same time the bulk material properties are becoming closer to ideal, while the physico chemical effects associated with surfaces, edges and corners are multiplying. A series of strips of a Ni-12.7 at. pct A1 alloy were Prepared containing cubical y'(NisAl) precipitates with edge lengths from 60 to 500A. A particle-free solution-tveated strip was included for cornparison. It ulas inferred that the particles deformed with the lnatvix becoming lamellae which remained coherent. Comparison with published data fov pure nickel showed that aluminum greatly re-tavded softening and recrystallization, but it made little difference whether or not particles were present. The presence of pakticles led to a heterogeneous distribution of precipitates after annealing at 700" to 750°C. Recovery was not detected. Recrystallization occurred by the growth of new grains into unrecrys-tallized material. In a previous study by the author,' the growth of Ll2-type ordered yl(Ni3Al) precipitates was followed in Ni-12.7 at. pct A1 alloy as a function of aging at 600" and 700°C. The particles were showo to be cubical in shape in all sizes from 50 to 3000A and remained coherent. This work was used as a guide in preparing the starting structures for the present study of the effect of these particles on the annealing behavior of heavily cold-rolled strip. Another question of present interest was whether dislocation and particle hardening were additive, since the structures before rolling ranged from solution-treated to peak-aged to overaged. Also, precipitation might occur on annealing after cold-rolling. Reference may be made to other papers2"5 for previous work in this relatively unexplored field and only some recent work will be mentioned her:. phillips2 studied the effect of deformable 0 to 590A-diam cobalt particles on a Cu-3.23 pct Co alloy rolled 95 pct and found that the particles, which rolled out into thin lamellae, impeded softening and recrystallization. Tanner and servi3 likewise studied the annealing of cold-swaged Cu-2 pct Co alloy containing 150A-diam particles and found impeding effects. Haessner et a1.,4 on the other hand, found that incoherent 2-p-diam non-deformable particles of B4C (0.04 vol pct) tended to increase the rate of recrystallization of copper rolled up to 95 pct reduction. They attributed this to the formation of new grains at the particle interfaces. Humphreys and artin' found that nondeformable silica particles in copper rolled to 30 pct reduction accelerated recrystallization if the particle spacing was large and retarded it if the spacing was smaller. Haessner et a1 4 also studied a rolled Ni-Cr-A1 alloy; however, the particles of y'(Ni3Al)-type precipitate were not put in before rolling, but separated during the isothermal annealing at 750°C. No previous work appears to have been carried out on the effect of y' (Ni3A1) particles on the annealing of Ni-A1 alloy. Hornbogen and ICreye7 redetermined the solubility c of aluminum in nickel as a function of temperature T and showed that it was given by c = 32.6 exp(-1940/RT). This relation gives aluminum solubilities of 15.1, 14.2, 12.0, and 10.7 at. pct at 1000°, 900°, 700°, and 600°C, respectively. The phase precipitated from the nickel-rich solid solution is fcc y1 (Ni3A1) which has a Cu3Au -type ordered structure8 and remains ordered up to 1000°C.B EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The alloy used was identical with that used before. Chemical analysis showed 6.27 wt pct (12.71 at. pct) Al, the principle impurities being 0.065 pct Fe, 0.022 pct Co, 0.020 pct Cu, and 0.004 pct C. Bar stock of 1 in. diam was cold-swaged to % in. diam, cold-rolled to 0.300-in.-thick strip, and annealed at 900°C in dry hydrogen. It was cold-rolled to 0.100-in. thickness and solution-treated for 1 hr at 1000°C while sealed in a quartz tube in argon, quenching in iced brine with the aid of a device to snap off the nose of the tube. Lineal analysis gave an average grain size of 0.055 mm. Pieces of strip were aged at 700°C in vacuo for 30 min, 51/4 hr, and 1 week to produce nominal average particle widths of 60, 150, and 500A, respectively, as known from the previous work.' The average diamond pyramid hardness was determined. The heat-treated strips were rolled from 0.100 to 0.005 in., a reduction of 95 pct, and the rolled strips stored at about -5°C. Small pieces were annealed within 1 week for 30 min at temperatures from 300° to 950° ±2°C in a horizontal vacuum furnace. Strips were withdrawn into a cooling zone, giving an estimated initial cooling rate from 950°C of about 50°C per sec. Average diamond pyramid hardnesses were determined on a lightly electropolished spot on the surface of each strip using 300-g load. Each point on the softening curves represents a separate annealed specimen. Sections containing the rolling direction were examined by optical metallography. Selected specimens were electrothinned to the center plane' and examined by transmission at 100 kv in a Siemens Elmiskop I electron microscope. It is well-known that changes in the structure tend to occur when a deformed strip is electrothinned below a thickness of a few hundred angstroms, although this is less serious with a material such as nickel which has a high melting point, and also is apt to be less serious when particles are present. Observations were nevertheless confined to thicker regions of the foils with estimated thicknesses over 1000A. No changes were observed due to beam exposure.

A scrubber of new design has been invented for the beneficiation of glass and chemical sands. The machine is described and its capacity and metallurgical efficiency compared with the performance of other sand cleaning devices. THREE years ago, when the Process Research Laboratory at Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Co. sought a remedy for the increasing cost of disposing of great quantities of spent sands from foundries, R. C. Edwards developed a continuous inclined paddle scrubber which removed a substantial amount of the charred coatings from the grains with a surprisingly small amount of degradation of the sand itself.' The satisfactory results obtained on foundry sand, using this piece of equipment in conjunction with classification, suggested that a similar procedure could probably be applied to the cleaning of other sands, such as those required by the glass and chemical industries. This paper describes the flowsheet and the results of tests performed on impure natural sands. The four materials tested were silica sands obtained from widely separated geographical areas. Three of the sands tested contained various amounts of iron oxide and the fourth an excessive amount of calcareous bonding material. The iron oxide was present predominantly in the form of grain coatings, which were scuffed by the paddle scrubber, and in all cases a product was manufactured which would meet one of the sets of specifications imposed by the glass industry.' The Edwards paddle scrubber used in these tests consists of a rubber-lined steel cylinder 18 in. in diam and 48 in. long, mounted on a frame so that its slope can be varied 5" to 35" from horizontal. This variable slope permits controlled flow of material through the machine. Rubber paddles rotate inside the cylinder and are secured to a center shaft 2 in. square, which extends through the entire length and is turned at both ends so that it can be supported by sleeve bearings centrally fixed in the end plates of the shell. At the upper or feed end it extends through the bearing on the end plate into a sheave, to which the motor drive is connected by means of Texrope transmission. The four sets of paddles mounted on the shaft, two in each set, are made of rubber belting, 1/4 in. thick, 9 in. wide, and 16 in. long. The two paddles in each set are secured on opposite sides of the square shaft, but in the same longitudinal position along the shaft axis. In other words, the two paddles in the set operate 180" apart. Each successive set is mounted 90" from the preceding one. One end of each paddle is bolted to the square shaft and the other weighted by a steel bar, lx1 1hx9 in. long, which is attached about Yz in. from the outer tip of the paddle. By centrifugal force at proper shaft speed, these weights force the paddle surface to rub smoothly against the rubber lining of the cylinder. During operation, the sand forces its way between the paddle face and the surface of the cylinder, providing the necessary abrading action as the pulp flows by gravity down the length of the cylinder. The capacity of the machine is limited by the amount and the hardness of the coating material and by the quality of product desired.
