AT THE New York meeting of the Institute of Metals Division in February, 1927, Jeffries and Tarasov presented a paper on Tungsten and Thoria,1 in which the experimental facts were interpreted in accordance with the prevailing point of view that the thorium is present as the oxide, thoria. In discussing that paper the writer of this article stated that his own investigations, which had been unavailable to Messrs. Jeffries and Tarasov, showed that the so-called "thoriated" tungsten filament failed to disclose any sign of the oxide when subjected to X-ray diffraction analysis, but did give plenty of evidence of the presence of metallic thorium and, in certain cases, of a material believed to be an alloy of tungsten in thorium. Since these results were completely at variance with the results reported in the paper under discussion and with other papers which had preceded it from time to time in the past, it was felt that further discussion should be withheld until the new evidence could be presented adequately. Arrangements were therefore made to present that evidence at this meeting. MATERIAL EXAMINED The material examined was high-emission filament such as is used in radio tubes, supposed to contain about 0.75 per cent. thoria. The actual analysis was not stated. SCOPE OF THE INVESTIGATION The investigation was undertaken because of a feeling that the thorium present in filamentary material of this type exists as metallic thorium or as an alloy of thorium and tungsten and not as the oxide. Attention was therefore directed to determining: 1. The minimum amount of thoria detectible in a mechanical mixture of thoria powder and finely divided tungsten. 2. The amount of thoria detectible in the filament. 3. The condition of any thorium present in other form than as thoria. 4. The amount of thorium dissolved in the tungsten.

Those who have examined beryllium and beryllium-rich alloys under the microscope have noted the results of the difficulties encountered when preparing these materials for examination. Hard constituents are readily chipped and pulled out of the matrix, and the soft ones are easily gouged out or embedded with abrasive or other material. The matrix is easily deformed, which makes it very difficult to remove the effects of scratches. Furthermore, the matrix and some of the constituents are also readily pitted during etching, which makes the structure difficult to develop. The metallographic techniques designed to avoid these difficulties are neither radically new nor necessarily the best possible procedures. They were developed at Battelle to fill immediate requirements as part of a study of the preparation and pouring of beryllium melts as described in a separate paper. A part of the research program on the causes of gas unsoundness in beryllium castings entailed a study of the effects of such gases or gas formers as oxygen or oxides, nitrogen or nitrides, and carbon or carbides. These gases or gas formers, if dissolved in the melt, might be an important factor in the study of unsoundness caused by gas evolution in beryllium. Because it was necessary to be able to distinguish these gases or gas formers, if present as alloy constituents, from metallic phases also present as alloy constituents, a series of alloys was prepared with additions of the various possible metallic and non-metallic constituent formers. It should be emphasized that the constituents referred to as gases or gas formers are important in the study of gases in beryllium only if they form a part of the alloy, that is, if they dissolve in the liquid or solid metal. During the first part of the development of metallographic techniques, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, unpublished report (TC 3315, Nov., 1945) by Paul Gordon, describing various microconstituents in beryllium, was quite useful. Of particular interest in this report is the confirmation of one of the conclusions drawn from the present investigation, that is, that a distinct oxide phase apparently does not occur in beryllium. The Preparation of Metallographic Specimens GRINDING PROCEDURE The original specimen is either sawed or cut on an abrasive wheel to a convenient size. For best results, the surface to be polished should not be more than about 1/4 in. square, and it is convenient to mount the specimens in bakelite to facilitate handling. Two alternative grinding procedures have been developed. As one alternative, specimens are ground successively on 120-, 240-, and 400-grit, wet-or-dry metallographic discs. The abrasive discs are revolved at 1750 rpm on a conventional pedestal grinder. The coarsest disc (120 grit) is used either wet or dry, and in most instances, it can be eliminated from the procedure. Grinding on the two finer discs (240 and 400 grit) is accompanied by the application of kerosene. The technique consists of holding an oil can, containing kerosene, in one hand and the mounted specimen in the other hand. While the grinding is being done, several drops of kerosene are applied every few seconds close to the center of the disc. Carbon tetrachloride serves at least as well as kerosene as a lubricant; perhaps it is slightly better, but it volatilizes so readily that an additional health hazard is involved. Light oils and water are not satisfactory for the finer grinding operations. The second procedure is perhaps slightly slower than the first and requires a more careful technique, but it eliminates the use of kerosene. The specimen is first ground wet on a 240-grit disc, followed by dry grinding on a 400-grit disc. Finer grinding does not appear to be necessary with either of the two alternative procedures. The pressures used throughout either grinding operation must be extremely light, that is, barely sufficient to hold the specimen in contact with the disc; otherwise, flow and chipping are almost certain to occur. In both procedures, it is essential that the discs be sharp and that they be discarded as they show evidence of becoming dull or loaded. In general, not more than four or five specimens can be ground on a disc before the disc becomes dull enough to warrant discarding it.

A laboratory investigation of the behavior of casing subjected to salt loading indicates that it is not economically feasible to design casing for the most severe situations of nonuniform loading. When the annulus is completely filled with cement, casing is subjected to a nearly uniform loading approximately equal to the overburden pressure, and, although the modes of failure may be different, the design of casing to withstand uniform salt pressure can be computed on the same basis as the design of casing to withstand fluid pressure. Failure of casing by nonuniform loading in inadequately cemented washed-out salt sections should be considered a cementing problem rather than a casing design problem. INTRODUCTION Casing failures in salt zones have created an interest in understanding the behavior of casing subjected to salt loading. The designer must know the magnitudes and types of loading to be expected from salt flow and he must be able to calculate the reaction of the casing to these loads. In the laboratory study reported in this paper, short-time experimental measurements of the load required to force steel cylinders into rock salt are used as a basis for computing the salt loading on casing. These results must be considered to be qualitative only since rock salt behaves differently under down-hole and atmospheric conditions and also may vary in strength at different locations. The beneficial effects of (1) cement around casing, (2) a liner cemented inside of casing, and (3) fluid pressure inside of casing in resisting casing failure are considered. ROCK SALT BEHAVIOR UNDER STRESS The effects of such factors as overburden loading, internal fluid pressure, and temperature on the flow of salt around cavities have been studied extensively at The U. of Texas. Brown, et al.1 have concluded that an opening in rock salt can reach a stable equilibrium if the formation stress is less than 3,000 psi and the temperature is less than 300°F. At higher temperatures and pressures an opening in salt can close completely. These results indicate that calculations based upon elastic and plastic equilibrium for an open hole in salt should be applied only at depths less than 3,000 ft. In most oil wells the tem- perature will be less than 300F in the salt sections, therefore no appreciable temperature effects are anticipated. Serata and Gloyna2 have reported an investigation of the structural stability of salt. .They assume that the major principal stress is due to the overburden. Other stresses can be superimposed if additional lateral pressures are known to be acting in a particular region. In the present analysis an isotropic state of stress is assumed to exist in the salt before the hole is drilled, since salt regions are generally at rest. This assumption is partially verified from formation breakdown pressure data taken during squeeze-cementing operations in salt. Experimental measurements of the elastic properties of rock salt indicate a value of 150,000 psi for Young's modulus and a value of approximately 0.5 for Poisson's ratio. A value of % for Poison's ratio with finite Young's modulus would indicate that the material was incompressible. Values ranging from 2,300 to 5,000 psi have been reporteda for the unconfined compressive strength of salt. These variations may be due to differences in the properties of the salt from different locations or at least partially to differences in testing techniques. Salt is very ductile, even under relatively low confining pressures. For example, in triaxial tests reported by Handin3 strains in excess of 20 to 30 per cent were obtained without fracture. When casing is cemented in a hole through a salt section, the casing must withstand a load from the formation if plastic flow of the salt is prevented. To determine the forces which salt can impose on casing, circular steel rods were forced into Hockley rocksalt with the longitudinal axis of the rods parallel to the surface of the salt. The force required to embed rods 0.2 to I in. in diameter and 1/2 to 1 in. long to a depth equal to the radius of the rods was found to be F/DL =28,700 psi (± 3,700 psi) , .... (1) where D is the diameter, and L is the length of the rod. CASING STRESSES Since an open borehole through salt at depths greater than 3,000 ft will tend to close, cemented casing which prevents closure of the hole will be subjected to a pressure approximately equal to the horizontal formation stress after a sufficiently long time. As a first approximation the horizontal stress can be assumed to be equal to the overburden pressure. This is in agreement with the suggestion by Texter4 that an adequate cement job can prevent plastic flow of salt and result in a pressure on the casing approximately equal to the overburden pressure. The subject of this paper is particularly appropriate, since Daniel C. Jackling was active in early exploitation of taconites on the Mesabi Range and contributed greatly to their later economic development. After his success in developing the low grade porphyries in the West he looked for more worlds to conquer, and so undertook the concentration of low grade taconites, from which he hoped to produce commercial ore. Mesabi Iron Co., organized in 1919, actually did produce merchantable sinter from taconites in 1922. The enterprise did not prove commercial at the time, as cost of production was high and the surplus of iron ore in the Lake Superior District already contributed to a low market price, but this same property has since been developed by Reserve Mining Co. The work done by Jackling had much to do with the success of this later venture. Iron ore was first discovered on the Marquette Range in Michigan in 1845. The first ore from this range came from the old Jackson mine in Negaunee in 1848. During these early years this property and others on the Marquette produced limited tonnages for transportation to Lower Lakes and for consumption by charcoal furnaces in the area, where a plentiful supply of hardwoods furnished the charcoal for iron smelting. The Marquette and other ranges tributary to Lake Superior did not produce much ore for transportation to Lower Lakes until the locks at Sault Ste. Marie were constructed, but from the time the first lock at the "Soo" was completed in 1855 these ores were transported through the locks to consumer centers in the East. The Marquette Range has a history of continuous production from 1848 to the present day.

PROPERTY of Malartic Gold Fields Ltd. is situaated in the great clay belt in the northern part of the Province of Quebec. This belt represents the floor of the glacial lake Barlow-Ojibway. The clay blanket has a gently rolling, almost flat surface, with here and there projecting knobs and ridges that outline the large irregularities of the surface on which the clay was deposited. At irregular intervals glacial eskers dominate the landscape. The ore-bearing country rock is covered by strata of clay, sand, and silt to a depth varying to 40 ft. There are serious structural problems when it is necessary to place loads of unequal intensities on this surface to support buildings and machinery for a modern mining plant. Earlier mining companies and their engineers paid little attention to the science of soil mechanics, partly because they believed it unnecessary and partly because they knew little of the subject. The results are evident in some of the tottering structures in older camps. Careful analysis of soil problems is well worth-while, since cost of foundations may vary from 20 to 50 pct of the final cost of a structure. Low operating and maintenance costs can be achieved only in this way.

(written dlscussion ?) .-It is interesting to observe how closely Mr. Hansen agrees with other investigators to the effect that the art of electrolytic zinc has left the realm of mystery. In his introduction, lie has said practically what Thomas French said in his paper "The Future of Electrolytic Zinc. "1 The successful electrolysis of zinc from sulphate solutions has not been an easy matter, and it is only within recent years that the difficult problem of depositing high-grade zinc has been satisfactorily: accomplished on a commercial basis. The principal requisite is. that the electrolyte shall be quite free from certain impurities. The methods by which freedom from these impurities is assured are now very well understood, and with experienced superintendents there is little difficulty in obtaining a high efficiency in that part of the process. When certain underlying principles are recognized, the difficulty encountered in dealing with the filtration of the acid and slimy solutions also largely disappears, although it has been a very serious one to the uninitiated. In the dissolving of the zinc from the roasted ore, there is nothing which any competent chemical' engineer cannot undertake, and any other operations connected with the electrolytic process are either of little or no difficulty, or are common to the retort process. Mr. Hansen also agrees with R. G. Hall's statement in " Some Economic Factors in the Production of Electrolytic Zinc:"2

Although blister copper has been produced at the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company's works since 1896, it is only during the past five years that electrolytic refining has been undertaken locally, this having been done previously at customs refineries, at first in the United States, and afterwards at Port Kembla, New South Wales. CHROMITE deposits in southwestern Oregon occur along definite zones or horizons in sill-like ultramafic intrusions. These horizons are here referred to as ore zones and are distinguishable only by relatively Shin and scattered, discontinuous chromite occurrences. The zones are tabular in shape but are usually folded and faulted by the intensive post-intrusion deformation the ultramafic rocks have undergone. A single zone may contain disseminated, nodular, banded, or pods of massive chromite. The typical chromite deposit is composed of a series of thin lens-shaped bodies that lie along a definite plane and generally show evidence of magmatic flow with their long dimensions aligned in the direction of flow. A body of chromite often pinches down to a narrow wisp only a fraction of an inch thick. This thin streak of chromite may point to or be connected with another body of chromite. In some deposits the orebodies have a definite rake. The depth at which chromite may be found can be predicted by its position in a folded intrusive, provided that adequate structural evidence is available. Although the ore shoots are characteristically discontinuous, there is theoretically no limit to the depth at which chromite may be found. Origin: All the chromite deposits examined in southwestern Oregon are of magmatic origin, that is, the chromite was an original constituent of the peridotite magma and became segregated in varying degree from the magma to form the ore de- posits. Examples of early, intermediate, and late magmatic chromite have been recognized in the area. Crystallization of the principal minerals (olivine, pyroxene, and chromite) was apparently near completion at the time of intrusion of the peridotite magma. The magma acted as a viscous crystal mush stringing out aggregates of pyroxene and chromite in the direction of flow. These streaky accumulations are termed schlieren.

A colloidal solution of a ferrimagnetic material, such as magnetite, in a liquid that is immiscible with and lighter than water is projected for use in selective separation of particles according to their density spectrum. Magnetic levitation forces can be created as an antigravity field when the fluid is properly placed in an inhomogeneous magnetic field. When the gradient of the magnetic field is directed downwards, the levitation force in the fluid will be in an upward direction to float sinking nonmagnetic bodies by counterbalancing their density mismatch with the magnetic fluid. Several nonmagnetic objects with densities ranging from 2.50 to 11.35-g cm' were made to float or submerge at will in a 0.96-g cm' density fluid placed in vertical magnetic field gradients ranging from 0.1 to 1 kilo-oersted cm-'. The magnetic levitation force in dyne cm' was found to vary linearly as a function of the object-fluid density mismatch with a slope equal to one g, the acceleration due to gravity.

Analytical calculations have been carried out on the effect of casing perforations on the productivity of wells, and formulas have been derived for general types of perforation patterns. The numerical calculations, however, show that the resultant well productivity is essentially independent of the perforation pattern, but is determined mainly by the total perforation density. Thus, for example, for a density of three perforations per foot of casing, the well productivity will be cut to one third of that of the uncased well for a perforation radius of 1/8 in., and to approximately one half for a perforation radius of 1/4 in., regardless of the detailed manner in which the perforations are distributed over the casing surface. The analytical theory is also extended to include wells completed with slotted liners. It is shown that the reduction in productivity due to such liners will be relatively small as compared with that due to perforated casings. The increasingly important role being played by productivity factors of wells in determining well potentials and in the general evaluation of producing formations lends interest to the analysis of all the various factors that may infuence the productivity of a well. In recent papers1 the results have been given of theoretical studies made to determine the effect on the productivity factor of a well of the gas-oil ratio of the production and the connate water within the sand. These have served to show that both of these factors may, under suitable conditions, materially reduce the effective productivity factors below those that would be anticipated on the assumption that the wells produce homogeneous fluids. In this paper will be presented the results of the analysis of an entirely different factor influencing the productivity of a well. This refers to that resulting from the increased use of the method of completing wells by setting casing opposite all of the productive strata and then gun-perforating the particular zones of immediate interest. The practical success of this method of completion would appear to be an answer to the question as to whether it seriously reduces the well productivity or materially cuts down the ultimate oil recovery that may be derived from the producing section. Nevertheless, it is of interest to examine just how great the effect of the restricted flow channels, represented by the gun perforations, may be in increasing the over-all effective sand resistance. Of course, to the extent that the well potentials are severely restricted by proration regulations, minor reductions in well productivities are even less serious than if the wells were to be allowed to produce wide open. On the other hand, even under these circumstances there may be at least the academic interest in such calculations in being able to correct and evaluate the effect of the perforations in order to carry

It is eight years since I have been connected actively with metallography, but in this time I have been learning something about colloid chemistry, which may be considered as the chemistry of bubbles, drops, grains, filaments, and films, all things in which at least one dimension is very small or in which the surface is large relatively to the mass. Films, of course, suggest to the metallographist Beilby's amorphous film theory, about which I am going to speak for a while, though probably not in the way you expect. I come to bury Beilby, not to praise him. So far as I can judge from looking over the literature hastily, there are two schools in the United States, those who accept Beilby's theory willingly and those who accept it unwillingly. Hoytl says that: At present there seem to be two schools in metallography, one which has adopted the amorphous-phase theory for the explanation of the effect of cold work, mechanical deformation, etc., and one which is not ready at present to adopt this theory. It seems to me that this theory can at least be used as a convenient means of explaining various facts that are demonstrable in the laboratory but the presence of this amorphous material, through our lack of experimental means, we are unable to prove. That we have failed in this direction should not necessarily hinder us from using a theory as workable as this. Mathewson2 says: I have come reluctantly to believe in the amorphous theory, or some theory admitting a modification of the ordinary crystalline phase so as to permit differential properties with temperature, etc. If Mathewson represents one extreme, with Hoyt perhaps occupying a middle ground, H. M. Howe3 may be cited as one of the enthusiastic supporters of Beilby's amorphous theory. It is, says Howe:

In view of the great interest shown in the oil possibilities of Kentucky, one is impressed with the paucity of reliable literature on the oil fields of the state. A few brief reports by the Federal and State Geological Surveys are about the only reliable data available. When the estimated production figures, for 1918, are published by the U. S. Geological Survey, they will show a revival of the oil industry in the Blue Grass State during the past half decade. There will also be an increase in the production for 1919 and 1920, at least. Although as an oil-producing state Kentucky is small, compared with some of the other oil states, the present production and the area of undrilled proved territory is large enough to classify it as one of the important oil states of the Union. This paper will be confined to the Irvine District and the immediately adjoining areas which have been prospected with varying success. The Corniferous limestone or Irvine sand is the oil-producing formation in the area discussed. In my divisional nomenclature, the Irvine District includes the Irvine field, which extends from the town of Irvine eastward toward Campton; the Big Sinking area, which joins and lies to the south of the eastern part of the Irvine field; the Beattyville area, which lies to the north and northeast of the town of that name and joins the Big Sinking area; and the Ross Creek pool, which lies to the southwest of the big production and across the Kentucky River. Except for the Ross Creek pool, the main producing area is bounded on the east by the L. & E. R. R. and on the west and south by the Irvine Branch of the L. & N. R. R. Winchester and Lexington form the gateways and Torrent on the east, Irvine on the west, and Beattyville on the south are the principle entrances to the main fields. Evelyn, on the L. & N. R. R., south of Irvine, is the point of entrance to the Ross Creek area. Geology The geology of the Irvine District is very simple. The rock formations with which the oil man should acquaint himself lie between the lower measures of the Pennsylvanian sandstones and shales and the Devonian or Corniferous limestone, or Irvine formation. Only a very brief description of these formations will be given, as they have been described fully by E. W. Shaw.'

The work tvhich has been done on steel rails, and which has been diwu&e,l here Juring thee two days, was not done to establish any pet theories, nor to make out that any person was great or any person small, but with a sincere desire to get at what is the truth in regard to the wedring capacity of steel rails. There are enormous commercial coneiderations invoIved in this question, and, as I look at the matter, the more honest criticism and fair discussion there is, the Inore likely it is that the truth will appear. Ad first I would like to say that it seems to me very little has been said here upon the main conclusion of the paper, namely, that the softer rails give the better wear. All sorts of side issues have been discussed; but this poiat, which is really the principal one at issue, has been largely ignored, aid I cannot But feel that it still remains unshaken. Pebble phosphate mines of Florida have been established from south of Hardee County to north of the Georgia state line, a distance of over 200 miles. Mining has been carried out on an ever-increasing scale since 1885, but phosphate deposits that can be mined on the economical standards of today, are confined in a roughly circular area about 30 miles in diameter, generally within Polk and Hillsborough Counties, in the central part of the State. The phosphate deposit, which is in the Bone Valley formation of Pliocene age, is covered by Pleistocene terrace deposits of unconsolidated quartz sand. The matrix is composed of approximately 1/3 clay slimes, 1/3 silica sand and 1/3 phosphate pebbles. The phosphate usually occurs as rounded pebbles, ranging in size from about 1 in. down to approximately 400 mesh. The phosphate may vary from well-defined hard pebbles to soft weathered rock. The color and character of the phosphate will range from smooth buff pebbles to black and white "salt-and- pepper rock." The screen size distribution varies considerably between locations; the recoverable phosphate may extend down to the 400-mesh size in some areas, while in others the phosphate may cut off sharply at about 35 mesh.

THE safety of mine workers has received more attention from both State and Federal law-making bodies than any other industry, a fact that shows clearly the hazardous nature of the industry. The last, but by no means the least, of the measures adopted for the protection of mine workers, is workmen's compensation legislation. This is proving to be a powerful instrument for greater safety in the industries, from the fact that special stress is laid not on how the accident happened or who may have been responsible for it, but on how badly the employee is hurt by it. The injured person does not have to employ lawyers to prove his case, because the mere fact of his employment is proof of his right to compensation. The immediate effect of such legislation is the certainty confronting the mine operator that he must pay out large sums for every accident, regardless of its cause, thus adding materially to the cost of the production of his coal. This fact furnished to the operator the strongest incentive to reduce the causes of accidents; not that the operator has ever lacked reasonable consideration for the welfare of his employees and a proper humane interest in their safety, but his engrossment in earning his daily livelihood has been so great that he has not felt that he had the time to devote to the safety of the operation. This time he must now find because of the actual-cash value of the prevention of accidents in his mines. This agency alone proved inadequate to bring about a material improvement because operators have always been willing enough to improve safety conditions when possible to do so within reasonable limits of their financial ability. The requirement in the Workmen's Compensation Laws of several of the States, that the mine operator shall insure as a guarantee of his ability to meet his compensation obligations, has furnished the needed incentive, moral and financial, necessary to the prompt and effective dissemination of a more general knowledge of the causes and
