The surface mining operations of the Simplot Fertilizer Co. are on the Fort Hall Indian Reservation approximately 16 miles east of Fort Hall, Idaho (Fig 1). The Phosphoria formation outcrops in sec. 2, 3, 11, 14, 15, 22 and 27, T 4 S, R 37 E, Boise Meridian. The ownership of these phosphate-bearing lands is divided between individual Indians and the Bannock-Shoshone Tribe, and the royalties are paid to the respective owners on a tonnage basis, as the rock is mined. The geology and mineral resources of the Fort Hall Reservation were studied by the U. S. Geological Survey in 1913 and reported on in 1920. † However, it was not until the winter of 1945 that exploratory work was undertaken by private enterprise. The influence of the hydroxyl factor is more damaging to formations penetrated and causes greater consumption of drilling mud additives than previously realized. This hydroxyl effect on clays is essentially independent of the cations present in the drilling fluid and thus differs from the base exchange reactions that have preoccupied mud chemistry with sodium and calcium bentonite concepts for nearly two decades. The new organic polyelectrolyte-con-ditioned muds haw made it possible to use materials other than sodium hydroxide to maintain the alkalinity of such muds. The properties of silicates, as indicated by their dissociation characteristics and buffering action, are such that they can control he pH and alkalinity of drilling muds at the desired level and, at the same time, minimize undesirable hydroxyl effects associated with sodium hydroxide. This use of silicate compounds is different and distinct from prior applications of silicates as deflocculants or shale preservers. Laboratory and field data presented in this report show that silicate compositions can be utilized to adjust the alkalinity of drilling muds and, at the same time, minimize hydmxyl-promoted clay cleavage. INTRODUCTION Studies for improving the efficiency of rotary drilling techniques must consider the chemistry of drilling fluids and of the formations being penetrated. The chemical aspects of drilling must be studied in conjunction with and in relation to the mechanical factors if, for example, penetration rates are to be optimized. Drilling fluid technology has been largely influenced by chemical reactions of the montmorillonite (bentonite) clay minerals. Most of the literature of mud chemistry concerns the properties of bentonite. Clays of the kaolin or illite type, which are nonswelling, are not generally regarded as sources of drilling mud problems. If these nonswelling shale clays are considered, they are commonly regarded as inert solids. Particularly noteworthy is the fact that the relation of surface and colloid chemistry to massive shale bodies has received only scant attention from drilling technologists. Clay studies reported in the drilling mud literature have dealt, for the most part, with the properties of clays in a finely divided state, and often in very dilute suspensions. Yet frequently during drilling, shale problems not related to the rheology of clay suspensions develop in massive non-bentonitic shale sections of zero or near zero permeability. This paper is concerned with surface chemical reactions that can influence the behavior of these non-bentonite clay masses in such a manner as to adversely affect drilling operations. Browning and Perricone1,2 have pointed out that some of the most troublesome shales to drill, such as the Atoka, contain no montmorillonites. They also pointed out that mud problems can frequently be mitigated by reduction of clay cleavage achieved by using drilling fluids with a minimum of available hydroxyl ions. If pronounced clay cleavage occurs during drilling, the borehole may soften, increasing the possibility of sloughing. In addition, the resulting increased incorporation of high-surface-area clay solids into the mud system can reduce penetration rates and necessitate greater chemical treatment. This increase of shale, of colloidal or near-colloidal dimensions, into the drilling mud is due to clay aggregate cleavage and not to base exchange or swelling reactions, such as occur with bentonites. Searle and Grimshaw3 point out the difference between cleavage or slaking reactions of nonswelling clays (such as illite and kaolinite) and the swelling of bentonite. They further state that the speed of slaking is increased in alkaline water. Eitel1 cites Salmang and Becker, who recognized that clay surface reactions impart plasticity and workability to clay masses. Their results clearly show that all liquids which contain hydroxyl groups in their molecules favor the workability of clays. The ancient technique of aging clays in the moist condition to increase their "workability" is evidence that these clay cleavage phenomena are of considerable importance. The same hydration cleavage that occurs during the aging of nonswelling clays for ceramic use also acts to break up cuttings and soften the borehole during drilling operations. The mechanism of cleavage of the crystalline aggregates of illitic, kaolinitic and other nonswelling clays; and the chemical means of controlling this cleavage are therefore of considerable significance to the drilling mud chemistry. Inasmuch as there is little reference in the drilling mud literature to the cleavage reactions of nonswelling clays, the structure of these clays and certain properties that relate to the mechanism of clay cleavage will be reviewed briefly. EQUILIBRIUM conditions for steelmaking reactions have been studied extensively over the past two decades by a .number of investigators, with gratifying results. Equilibrium data are essential to the understanding of any process, and such knowledge has the practical utility of placing a limit beyond which control measures cannot succeed. When, however, the driving rate of an industrial process is so fast that there is not time for reactions to reach equilibrium, it then becomes necessary that the factors which control the rates of reaction be known in order to establish full control of the process. The desulphurization of molten pig iron by slags within the iron blast furnace is one such process in which the actual degree of sulphur absorption by the slag does not approach the equilibrium distribution obtained for similar slag-metal systems in the laboratory.' A study of the rate-controlling factors governing the desulphurization of iron by slags is becoming increasingly important as the sulphur content of raw materials increases with depletion of higher grade ores and coal. Following up an initial study on kinetics,' this paper reports some results of a continuing laboratory investigation on the mechanism of sulphur transfer between molten iron saturated with carbon and slags of the CaO-SiO,-A12O3 system. Laboratory experiments cannot reproduce in detail the conditions which prevail in the hearth of a blast furnace, but they will contribute to an understanding of the smelting reactions and perhaps will explain some apparent inconsistencies in the factors controlling the equilibrium distribution of sulphur between iron and slags under reducing compared with oxidizing conditions. The mechanism of a reaction—that is, the individual steps and the sequence in which they occur to produce the overall reaction which is ordinarily observed—must be elucidated to learn which steps are the slow ones, or "bottlenecks," that fix the pace of the process as a whole. In the desulphurization reaction, for example, the overall rate might, in principle, depend upon the rate of diffusion of sulphur in the metal or in the slag, upon the speed of some homogeneous reaction taking place entirely within one of the phases, or upon some heterogeneous reaction taking place across the slag-metal interface. Even some side reaction or the back reaction might have some influence. Evidence on all of these points will be presented in this paper. IT is customary to ascribe two general modes of occurrence to natural gas, namely shale. gas which, as the name indicates, is found in' shale, and reservoir gas, which occurs ill sandstone, conglomerate and dolomitic limestone. Both of these types are found in the Cleveland district. The shale gas has been produced on a small scale for a long period of years, probably dating back as far as 1883. Shale gas is a low-pressure gas, small in volume with variable pressure, and is limited to no definite horizon. It is generally independent of oil, may last for a long time, and is not dependent to any great extent on the structure of the rocks. There are many such wells in the district which range from 400 to 1,840 ft. in depth, although most have been completed at about 800 ft. This indicates that the wells pass through the Cleveland and Chagrin shales into the Huron or Portage shale of the Upper Devonian. During the last 2 years great interest has developed in a deeper-seated reservoir gas. What is commonly called reservoir gas is generally a high-pressure gas occurring in large volume at a definite horizon. Oil may, or may not, be associated with the gas, and in most regions in which reservoir gas is found, the geological structure is of great importance. This type of gas occurs in all large fields such as those of West Virginia which have been supplying Cleveland until the recent discovery of local gas at great depths in commercial amounts.

CHROMIUM, one of the most vital of the strategic metals, has constantly increasing importance as research expands potential uses in alloy steel metallurgy. All signs point to a steadily growing use for chrome ore, and the general subject has received a great deal of attention recently.1 A relatively little known country, Southern Rhodesia produced a total of 5.949 million tons, or 18.6 pct of the total world chrome output, between 1906 and 1950, according to figures from the U. S. Dept. of Commerce. According to U. S. Bureau of Mines figures, Southern Rhodesia produced 291,525 tons in 1950 and 300,267 tons in 1951, or approximately 13 and 11 pct, respectively, of world production for the two years. In 1953 the Rhodesian Vanadium Corp. produced about 85,000 tons of which probably 7,000 tons were concentrate. Production by other companies was high. Large in themselves, the figures assume even greater significance because most of this output is of metallurgical grade.

Wollastonite, named after William H. Wollaston, an English chemist, is a calcium metasilicate, CaSiO3. It has a short history as an industrial mineral. The earliest production of wollastonite is reported to be from a deposit near Code Siding, located north of Randsburg, Calif. At this locality small tonnages of wollastonite were quarried during 1933-34 and 1938-41, and processed into mineral wool. This operation was largely experimental and virtually no United States production was again reported until the 1950s when a large deposit near Willsboro, N.Y., was developed by the Cabot Corp. A processing plant was placed on-stream in 1953, with nearly continuous production to date, and it is currently operated by Interpace Corp. Since 1958, wollastonite deposits in the Little and Big Maria Mountains of Riverside County, and in the Panamint Range of Inyo County, both in California, have operated intermittently for production of both ornamental and commercial wollastonite. During 1973, the United States was the major producing country, furnishing about 75% of the world's output. Recent production also has come from Finland, Mexico, and Kenya. Small amounts have been shipped intermittently from India, USSR, New Zealand, Republic of the Sudan, Republic of South Africa, and South-West Africa. The principal use of wollastonite is in the manufacture of ceramics, especially wall and floor tiles. Other uses are for paints, fillers, adhesives, reinforcing agents, plastics, fluxes, and glazes. Mineralogy Pure wollastonite, CaSiO3, has the composi¬tion of 48.3 % CaO and 51.7 % SiO,. However, it is seldom found in the pure state due to the ease with which it takes into solution the metasilicates of manganese, magnesium, iron, and strontium. Predominantly, wollastonite occurs as a contact metamorphic deposit forming between limestones and igneous rocks. Commonly associated minerals are garnet, diopside, epidote, calcite, and quartz. It has a specific gravity of 2.8 to 3.0, and hardness of 4.5 to 5 on Mobs' scale. When pure, it has a brilliant white color, but with impurities it may be grayish or brownish. Luster is vitreous to pearly. Melting point of wollastonite is about 1540° C. Wollastonite occurs in coarse-bladed masses, rarely showing good crystal form. It is usually acicular or fibrous, even in the smallest of particles. The most unique property of crushed and ground wollastonite is its cleavage. Fragments of crushed wollastonite tend to be needle-shaped, imparting a high strength, and this property is the basis for many of its uses. The fiber lengths are commonly in the ratio of 7 or 8 to 1, length to diameter. Some crystals of wollastonite fluoresce under short-wave or longwave ultraviolet light, or both; colors ranging from yellow-orange to pink-orange. Specimens may also show phosphorescence. The brightness of wollastonite is a property of considerable importance to the paint industry. Material, 99% pure, with a size of -325 mesh, has a General Electric reflectance rating of 92 to 96%. Chemically, wollastonite is inert and this property makes it useful as a filler and reinforcing agent. There are two polymorphs of calcium silicates: wollastonite, a low temperature form, and pseudowollastonite, a high temperature form. Inversion of wollastonite to pseudowollastonite occurs at about 1120° C, resulting in an increase in the coefficient of expansion and a color change. Pure white wollastonite, on inversion, may change to a cream tint, or various shades of red or brown. The color change is thought to be due to the presence of iron and strontium.

The amount of research done in the last fen years on the subject of diffusion in solid metals is significant of the importance of this problem. To review the literature dealing with diffusion is unnecessary here. Deschl in 1912 reviewed the work that had been done on diffusion in solids and gave a bibliography of the literature published before that time. Mehl's paper in 19362 is an excellent review of diffusion in metals and contains a large bibliography. Of importance also for it? review and bibliography is an article by 14. I. Krynitsky.~ While considerable material lias appeared in the literature on diffusion in brass, the amount of information is not great compared to that pertaining to some of the other alloys. Most of the information published is of a qualitative nature; that which is quantitative varies considerably. Thus the quantitative determination of the rates of diffusion of copper and zinc in alpha brass by a new method appeared worth while. In the present investigation the rate of diffusion of zinc in approximately the same composition alpha brass has been determined :it three temperatures. Procedure The method used consisted of plating copper on a beta brass, heating it, to allow diffusion to take place, and measuring the concentration of copper by determining the lattice constant of the alloy. This method is unique in that it uses a beta brass of such a composition that at the tem perature at which diffusion takes place the beta brass is saturated wit11 copper. Fourteen years ago, J. B. Warriner presented before the Institute a paper on anthracite stripping,' describing the progress of stripping in the Anthracite Region from its beginning with an old quarry stripping at Summit Hill, which was operated more than a century ago, through various types of strippings used in 1917. This paper will briefly review the status of anthracite stripping methods from 1917 to the present day and describe in detail the stripping operation of The Hudson Coal CO. at Clinton collicry. It is not intended as a review of the work in the district—that would require a much longer paper. History and Statistics Mr. Warriner said, in part: "The sizes of shovels have gradually increased until now 70 and 80-ton shovels are the rule and larger equipment is coming in." He also referred to a large electrically operated dragline which weighed about 225 tons and had an operating radius of 125 ft. In 1917, a number of strippings used shovels of various sizes, ranging up to the 60 Marion and Bucyrus 70-C railroad type. Material was hauled away in narrow-gage side dumpers, usually of 4 or 5 cu. yd. capacities. Star-type churn drills with 4-in. bits were generally used for drilling purposes. Since 1917 wages in the anthracite field; have increased, but the higher operating costs of strippings are now being successfully combated by continuous improvements in stripping equipment, such as the development of the caterpillar or crawler shovels, the use of larger cars, better drilling equipment, the introduction of shovels of increased capacity and the adoption, in a number of instances, of standard-gage equipment for transportation. In 1918 another large dragline was introduced in the southern fields, which had been in service in the Middle West and is in use today, dipping vertically about 180 ft. to raise coal out of a stripping. About 1918, small shovels with caterpillar traction were introduced. In 1922 the 6-in. well drills began replacing the 4-in. drills, with an attendant saving to the operators. About the same time A. In a leaching process, having obtained the copper in solution, the choice of the precipitation method is influenced by the following factors: 1. Availability of precipitant. 2. Adaptability to the leaching process. 3. Final product desired. 4. Regeneration of leaching solutions. 5. Fouling of solutions. There are three general classes of precipitation methods: 1. The use of iron, scrap or sponge. 2. Electrolytic deposition. 3. The use of some gas or reagent by which the copper is obtained, usually in the form of an intermediate precipitate which requires further treatment. For example, the precipitation of, the copper as Cu2Cl2 from chloride solutions; with SO2 gas. The use of iron is adapted to almost any process. It has the great advantage of extreme simplicity, and the recovery of the copper and any values present in a highly concentrated, easily treatable form. The disadvantages are the cost in isolated places, the uncertainty of the scrap-iron market, and the fouling of the leaching solutions. The latter is a serious factor, when a reagent such as salt is used in them, which makes necessary their re-use. Where applicable, electrolytic deposition is very attractive. The copper is obtained in a form directly marketable, there is a regeneration of acid and no fouling of solutions. Unfortunately, chloride solutions do not lend themselves to electrolysis. An entirely satisfactory anode material has not yet been discovered, although magnetite, apart from being rather brittle, seems to answer the requirements fairly well. INTRODUCTION Underground coal mining disturbs the original in-situ conditions which induces a series of strata activities and results in creating "mine pressures," the source of all ground control problems. Adoption of self advancing powered supports in modern longwall mining adds a new dimension to ground control problems and thus research. Roof stability, in general, refers to the integrity and stability of the immediate roof which is measured by the maximum exposed area and time duration without support. There are many factors that con- tribute to roof stability problems. In addition to mining height, rock property and stratum components and caving angle of the immediate roof, characteristics of joints and fissures and their degrees of development, faults and underground water, the operational techniques also play a very important role. This paper summarizes these operational techniques and methods of controlling stable and unstable roof. CLASSIFICATION OF THE IMMEDIATE ROOF There are many ways of classifying the roof (1). For practical purpose, the immediate roof in this paper is divided into three groups, i.e. unstable. medium stable and stable. Need for a standard of ualuration.—There should be an accepted method for evaluating the different kinds of bituminous coals based on their carbon just as that for iron ores is based on iron. Variation in the classes of coals and their desirability fol the different industrial uses is analagous to the case of iron ores. The iron people have developed a standard. In the past coals have not been intelligently distributed because the public has not been informed as to its uses. Many operators have known nothing about the final disposal of the coal shipped from their mines. Sales agents and retailers have had no means of evaluating coals except to make the price as high as the market will stand. Producers and distributors need to know how much more valuable the coals would be if prepared so as to contain less objectionable material. Mr. Swectser cnlletl on the Goal and Coke Committee of the Institnte to organize a study through producers and users to develop a method scientifically and comnereially sound E. A holbrook said that the information exists but the public is unwilling to investigate. He praised Ashley's1 nomenclature of the different kind of coal which has been accepted by the Coal Mining Institute of America and recommended to the American Enginecring Standards Commitee. G. S. Rice pointed out the wider variety and distribution of consumption of coal compared to Iron ore. C'. M. Young approved Mr. Sweetser's remarks and hoped lor a research institution, probably endowed, to study utilization of coal after it comes from the ground. Mr. Sweetser cited incidents to prove his former statements. He said that a reduction of 1 per cent. ash in the coal would cut down the cost of pig iron at a blast furnace 30 c. a ton, that the coal men should tell what the iron men would have to pay to get better coal. H. J. Prryn endorsed the need of blast-furnace operators to know the kind of coal from which their- coke is made and the latler's ash content, as this affects coke consumption. A. C. As papers are placed before you upon large gas-engines in Belgium and Germany, it was considered that some information should be given upon the same subject in Great Britain. I therefore agreed to compile these notes, which I have made very short in view of the somewhat full nature of the other papers presented to this meeting, and considering the complete nature of the many publications which have been made recently upon the subject of large gas-engines. I give below Tables I. to VI., showing the number and particulars of large gas-engines which have been built or are building by British makers, and in view of the growing size of gas-engines I have concluded that engines less than 500 h.p. cannot now be included in the category of large gas-engines, and therefore I have not considered engines under that power.

RECENTLY Horace Freeman1 obtained a patent on a successful method of conducting a roasting procedure described as to general features by Carl Schnabel2 almost forty years ago. Essentially, the Freeman process of roasting consists in introducing the finely powdered sulfide mineral, suspended in air or any other suitable gaseous medium, into the upper portion of a heated chamber. The stream of suspended particles is directed vertically downward. A counter-current stream of gas introduced at the bottom of the chamber flows upward. The mineral particles are oxidized as they fall through the heated atmosphere of the chamber. All air required for the oxidation may be admitted either at the top or the bottom of the chamber, or may be divided between the top and bottom inlets in any desired proportion. Heat may be recovered by passing the gases leaving the furnace through a waste-heat boiler or other form of interchanger. In speaking of the results obtained in roasting pyrite, Freeman says:3 Steam yield from the boiler exceeds 1 pound of steam per pound of pyrite con-sumed, which pays the cost of operation of the burner. The oxide produced is in the form of fused particles or hollow shells of magnetite, containing about 65 per cent of iron. It contains the gangue material ordinarily produced in flotation concentrate, of course, but it is being found that most of this can be eliminated by magnetic separa-tion, and that the sulfur content, as consistently produced, is below 0.2 percent. This material is especially interesting as a high-grade iron ore, free from phosphorus and low in sulfur. It may be sintered or briquetted. It is even more interesting as a raw material for sponge-iron production, to be directly smelted in electric furnaces without the usual cooling of the iron powder and magnetic separation between the reducing kiln and the electric furnace.

The following description of the Alabama coal-,fields is taken (with slight omissions) from the report " On the Warrior CoalField, by Henry McCalley, A.M., C. and M. E., Assistant State Geologist:" The coal lands of Alabama are of the great coal basin of the Ohio, or of the great Appalachian coal-field, and are estimated at 8660 square miles. They formed one connected field prior to the great Appalachian revolution, when there was pushed up through them long, narrow, anticlinal ridges which have been denuded into the present well-known anticlinal valleys, and thus this great field has been divided up into three more or less distinct parts. These parts were named by Prof. Tuomey, in 1849, the Warrior, the Cahaba and the Coosa coal-fields, respectively, from the names of the rivers which drain them. They are of very unequal size, the Warrior, with an area of 7810 square miles, being nearly ten times as large as the other two combined, and about two-thirds as large as the coal-area of Great Britain. This Warrior field is the most northwestern of the three coal-fields of Alabama, and comprises all of the coal-measnres in Alabama, northwest of the Alabama Great Southern railroad, or all of those drained by the Warrior and Tennessee rivers. The greater part of this field, almost all of it away from the present railroad lines, has never received more than a surface-examination. Still, we have in the Warrior coal-field one of the richest coal-basins of this or any other country. As a whole, the Warrior coal-field is a broad, shallow, tray-shaped depression, sloping towards the southwest, and with its southwest end covered by a newer formation and its southeast side, especially, complicated by folds and fractures. As is the case with all of our Coal Measures. it is composed of a series of sandstones. conglomerates, shales, slates and coal-seams, with some little limestone at several horizontal positions, but contains no thick bed of this last rock like the Measures of Pennsylvania and other States. Measurements of enthalpy changes and transformation temperatures me reported for the fcc -hcp marten-sitic transformation in pure cobalt single and multi-variant crystals andpolycrystalline specimens. From these measurements the free-energy difference between the two phases was calculated for both heating and cooling and for repeated cycles through the transformation. For heating of single crystals the average value of enthalpy change was 113 cal per mole but on cooling it was 84 cal per mole. This difference is interpreted in terms of lattice imperfections which are introduced during transformation. A calorimeter suitable for measurement of enthalpy changes of athertnal transformations is described. COBALT exhibits an allotropic phase transformation at around 417°C' where an hcp phase (a = 2.507, c = 4.0686, c/a = 1.6228)~ stable at low temperatures transforms to an fcc phase stable up to 1495°C. The transformation has a hysteresis of about 30°C— the exact magnitude of the hysteresis depending on the number of transformation cycles, grain size, impurity content, and prior treatment.'-6 The athermal character of the transformation and surface relief due to transformation shear indicate that the transformation is martensitic. Pole mechanisms for the transformation have been discussed by Sebilleau and Bibrin, Bilby, Seeger,' and Basinski and Christian. These authors have proposed that the cooling transformation is effected by rotation of a Shockley partial dislocation around a pole dislocation with a screw component of 2a/3(111). Such a rotation would change the stacking of close-packed planes from the abcabc fcc stacking to the ababab hcp stacking sequence. This mechanism would predict a lattice correspondence of {111}fcc~~(0002~cp, have been observed. One would expect the heating transformation to occur similarly, involving dislocation movements on the (0002)hcp. However, a high density of pole dislocations and high dislocation ve- locity are required to account for microscopic observations. Furthermore, the high back stress developed on the Shockley partial dislocation as it rotates toward the sessile dislocation associated with it makes it doubtful that this is in fact the transformation mechanism. A mechanism for spontaneous nucleation of partial dislocations1*l2 seems more reasonable. If a single crystal of cobalt is cycled through the transformation but never heated above 600°C, it will remain single."13 However, if the specimen is heated through the transformation and held for a short time at or above 1000°C before cooling, the cooling transformation usually involves all four {lll}fcc habits, resulting in neighboring orientations of hcp differing by 70.5 deg. This condition is termed multivariance and has been observed by Bibring and sebilleau5 and Nelson and ~ltstetter.' The latter authors used single crystals of cobalt grown in an electron beam zone refiner. They proposed that the strongly directional cooling caused the initial cooling transformation to occur on the {lll)fcc most nearly perpendicular to the temperature gradient. Transformation shear on one set of {lll}fcc planes immobilized dislocations on the other {lll}fcc planes involved in the initial transformation. Since there is only one (0002)hcp plane orientation, the product of subsequent heating transformations could have no more than two variants—the original fcc orientation or its twin. If, however, the specimen was annealed at a high temperature, such as 1000°C, there would be relaxation of dislocations into low-energy configurations, and in the absence of a sharp temperature gradient transformation on all four (111 Ifcc planes could occur. If a dislocation mechanism is responsible for the transformation, the perfection of the lattice should affect the reversibility of the transformation. Mutual constraints of neighboring grains in polycrystalline material would inhibit dislocation movement resulting in increasingly sluggish transformation. Indeed, Nelson and Altstetter found the M, to decrease and the A, to increase in going from single crystals to multi-variant specimens to polycrystals. The effect is enhanced by decreasing the grain size of a solid specimen or a powder.6'14 Data on the free-energy difference necessary to initiate the transformation gives information about the driving force of the transformation. This is an important consideration in the understanding of the transformation mechanism. Sampling methods for feasibility studies are dependent on geological characteristics of the deposit being evaluated. A preliminary geostatistical study is required, taking into account autocorrelation aspects of variables under study in order that sample plan design can be optimized to produce grade and tonnage estimates within stipulated error limits. In general, regular sample distribution is to be aimed for, and regular sample lengths (from drill core or cuttings, for example) are preferred in order to facilitate statistical analysis. Sample plans are modified and improved (either technically or economically), as a sampling program proceeds and additional information is obtained. Bulk samples for metallurgical testing can be evaluated in terms of the variance shown by all such samples in a deposit and the internal variability of grade. Attention to these sources of variability will ensure proper evaluation of pilot test results from bulk samples. In addition, a general mineralogical study of a deposit is an important, often ignored, requirement in a more general but semi-quantitative evaluation of the representativeness of a bulk sample; and, moreover, provides information useful in optimizing plant design.

RECENTLY there has been a considerable revival of interest in the effects of the various elements commonly added to brass for the purpose of increasing its strength. For many years the work of Guillet2? alone gave reliable information in this regard. Even today his determination's of the coefficients of equivalence of the various elements relative to zinc in brass are those universally employed in industry. This is so because these coefficients have stood the test of time-their substantial correctness has been proved in almost universal practice. It is not our intention to discuss here these coefficients or their use. Rather do we wish to emphasize the need for further systematic studies of the mechanical properties of the ternary systems of copper, zinc, and other individual elements. Since Guillet published the results of his first investigations Millington,16 Smalley33 and Thibaud45 have added somewhat to our information. In general they have confirmed the findings of Guillet, which may be stated in the following rather general terms: 1. The addition of aluminum to the 70:30 and 60:40 brasses progressively increases their hardness and strength and reduces their ductility and resistance to shock. 2. The addition of small amounts of iron to a 60:40 brass improves its strength without affecting its ductility. 3. The addition of small amounts of manganese to a 60:40 brass causes a progressive increase in its strength and reduction in its ductility. A considerable amount of information has been amassed in regard to the effect of nickel on brass (9, 22, 41) which it is unnecessary to refer to here, in view of the scope of this paper.

DURING the past summer the writer was asked by the Illinois State Geological Survey to make a study of some of its economic geological problems with regard to the applicability of geophysical methods of prospecting to their solution. The following four problems were sug-gested for investigation: (1) the fluorspar area of Southern Illinois, (2) oil structures in the south central part of the state, (3) the lead and zinc-bearing area of northwestern Illinois, and (4) the water supply and gravel deposits of the glacial drift. The prime requirements were to find a means of obtaining a maximum of useful information with a fairly modest outlay of expenditure for technical staff and equipment. The method of procedure adopted was that of making a preliminary study of each of the problems named by means of available office data and published reports with supplementary field reconnaissance where necessary.
