These Accidents Attracted More Than The Usual Attention; Coal-Trade And Engineering Papers Contained Many Comments And Suggestions On The Cause And Prevention Of Accidents; The Daily Press In Many Instances Condemned The Coal-Operators And Charged These Accidents To Their Negligence, Or Their Anxiety To Make Money Without Adopting Precautionary Measures. Immediately After Each Accident The Respective State ..Authorities Ordered Close Investigations To Be Made, With The View Of Establishing The Cause And Suggesting Remedies To Prevent Recurrence. Representatives Of The Technologic Branch Of The U. S. Geological Survey, To Whom The Investigation Of Mine-Accidents Had Recently Been Delegated By The Secretary Of The Interior,. Visited The Mines And Co-Operated With The Local Authorities In Their Determinations. It May Be Safe To Say Here That An Investigation Of A Mine After An Explosion Has Occurred Discloses But Little, Because. The Causes Have Been Removed And Conditions Have Been Entirely Changed. On Jan. 8, 1905, The Coal-Operators Of West Virginia Organized An Association At Washington For The Purpose Of Making Extensive Investigations, And Sufficient Funds Were Pledged To Carry Out This Work. At This Organization Meeting, The Representatives Of The Geological Survey Present Had No Suggestions To Offer As To The Cause Of These Accidents. An Examination Of The Various Reports Concerning These Accidents Indicates That The Explosions Were Caused By The Ignition Of Gas Or Dust; They Show The Point Of Origin And The Direction In Which The Force Was Expended, And Give A Detailed Description Of The Damage Done. The Fry cocurrent in situ combustion project was carried out in a 3.3-acre portion of a lenticular body of Robinson sandstone of Lower Pennsylvanian age. This particular sand body is about 12,000 ft long and 3,500 ft wide; it varies in thickness from 0 to 55 ft, trends northeast-southwest, and occurs at depths between 880 and 936 ft. The reservoir is made lip of three distinct types of sandstone, each having characteristic reservoir properties. (See Table I.) Textural gradients, sedimentary structures, erosional basal contact, absence of marine fossils, and geometry of the sand body all indicate that the sandstone is of fluvial origin and part of an extensive complex of river-deposited sedirnents. Geographically oriented cores reveal that the direction of depositing currents was to the southwest, parallel with the sand-body trend. Directions of maximum pernleability also parallel the northeast-southwest trend. The layered nature of the sandstone reservoir and its directional properties have controlled the areal distribution of produced gas, the ignition behavior, and the vertical profile and horizontal extent of the conbustion zone. INTRODUCTION This paper is the first of a series of three papers that describe Marathon Oil Co.'s Fry in situ combustion test. This first paper contains the results of a detailed study of the geology and reservoir characteristics of the Robinson sandstone reservoir in which the Fry test was conducted. The second and third parts of this series report on the field operations' and performance. The geologic work reiated to cores cut through the combustion zone, and to the effect of reservoir properties on the combustion process is included in the third paper.' GEOLOGIC STUDY OF THE FRY RESERVOIR The close spacing of continuous cores in the Fry combustion site provided an unusual opportunity to study the details of distribution of lithology and reservoir properties within a petroleum reservoir. The objectives of the study were: 1. To determine the distribution of rock types within the Robinson sandstone in the Fry area; 2. To determine the relationship of porosity and permeability to rock properties and establish the distribution and homogeneity of reservoir properties; 3. To determine the origin of the Robinson reservoirs so that attempts could be made to predict the size, shape, distribution, extent and continuity of Robinson reservoirs; and 4. To determine what effects, if any, the reservoir rocks might have on the combustion process, so that the process might be better evaluated. AVAILABLE MATERIALS Continuous cores were cut from 14 wells in the vicinity of the Fry site. Ten of the cores are from within the 3.3-acre pattern; six of the 10 were cut prior to combustion, and four were cut through the combustion zone. INTRODUCTION. MINES are interesting by reason of what they have done for man, or of what has been done for them by nature. Not all are interesting on both scores. Many profitable mines are commonplace to the geologist; and many presenting unique geological conditions have been sad failures commercially. The Standard group at Bodie has produced in 25 years, $14,500,000, paying $5,000,000 in dividends.' On the other hand, this output has been mined (almost wholly above the 1,000-ft. level) from a system of more than 100 veins, ranging in thickness-from 0.5 in. of "specimen rock" to 30 ft. of clay and quartz; distributed through a zone about 2,000" ft. in width, and representing from three to five distinct periods of formation. This group, therefore, by reason of its industrial record as well as its geological features, may fairly be regarded as doubly interesting. The Bodie district occupies an island of recent (Tertiary) hornblende-andesite, surrounded by a complex of igneous rocks and breccias. It lies at the summit of the eastern foot-hills of the Sierra Nevada mountains, and within the Great Basin, a few miles from its western edge, marked here by Mono lake on the line of the Great Fault. The average elevation of the outcroppings of the veins may be taken at about 5,700 ft. The andesite projects from south to north in a great tongue, 12,000 ft. long and 5,000 ft. wide, reaching an extreme height at the northern end of perhaps 1,000 ft. above the adjoining small canyons. CONSTRUCTION of a ground-water supply includes many operations, which do not end with completion of facilities. Evaluations must be made of the quality of water in various areas and the history of production. Following an analysis of geologic, hydrologic, and chemical data there must be an exploratory drilling program and a study of resulting information. When the well is completed a continuous survey of operating records and basic data is necessary, since designs for future wells are varied as more data becomes available for those already completed. As the following discussion must be limited to a single undertaking, the customary procedure will be outlined for development and construction of a ground-water supply in which more than three wells are involved. Parts of this procedure are applicable for all ground-water supplies. Three possible sites were selected for construction of a paper mill. The problem was that the industry daily required approximately 15 million gallons of water of the best quality available; however, if water of the best quality were not available in the desired amount, water of a poorer quality could be used up to half the required amount, about 7 million gallons. In the preliminary survey approximately 1500 to 2000 square miles were covered for each site. Collected data consisted of several hundred electric logs of oil and gas wells; reports by the U. S. Geological Survey on ground-water resources of localities in and near the area; unpublished records of several hundred water wells including chemical analyses of the water produced and drillers' logs of the wells; records of periodic water-level measurements made in observation wells by the USGS; topographic maps drawn up by USGS and by army engineers; and highway and county road maps. A preliminary report based on study and evaluation of these data was presented to the client, recommending the site with the most favorable and economical ground-water conditions. The study indicated that water of the quality and quantity desired could be developed. In this particular area there were indications that the aquifer could be separated into two zones con- taining water of different chemical character. This chemical character varied somewhat with area, but principally with depth, a factor which later proved an economic advantage in design of the well field. After studying the preliminary report, the client weighed other economic factors as well as ground-water advantages and selected a plant site. Authority was given to proceed with detailed study of the chosen area. Evaluation of preliminary data concerning the area indicated that it should be supplemented with additional information derived from actual exploratory drilling and testing. A flexible plan of exploratory drilling was devised so that data obtained as each test hole was drilled could be correlated with existing data and additional test holes could be located and drilled accordingly. Specific data to be obtained from each test hole were: samples of all formations penetrated; the driller's descriptive log of formations; electric logging surveys; one or more samples of water from selected water-bearing formations; temperature; and water levels and their recovery after periods of production. The area studied in such detail was approximately 400 square miles. Choice of location for the original test holes was based on the preliminary study. The pattern for these test holes was designed to require a minimum number of holes and to allow for interpolation of data between two, three, and four holes. Geologic, hydrologic, and chemical data gathered after completion of the first four test holes showed that the north section was the most desirable in the area, which was then reduced from the original 400 square miles to about 150 square miles for more detailed and intensive study. On the basis of findings from the current test a tentative well field was laid out and a drilling program devised. One test hole was located on the actual plant site and later developed into a small pilot production well equipped with a deep well turbine pump. Water from this well was used for general construction requirements. Another test hole drilled near the pilot production well and adjacent to the proposed route of the well-collection system was used during the pumping test of the pilot production well to determine the degree of interference. From the data thus obtained, calculations were made to determine the coefficients of transmissibility and storage. Three additional holes

John Duer Irving, who left his post as Professor of Economic Geology at the Sheffield Scientific School, New Haven, Conn., to join the Eleventh Regiment of Engineers shortly after the declaration of war, died in France, July 26, 1918, from an attack of pneumonia. Through the initiative of Mr. Benjamin B. Lawrence, a memorial service to Captain Irving was held at St. Paul's Chapel, Columbia University, on Sunday afternoon, August 4, which was' attended by members of Captain Irving's family, and about four hundred of his friends from Columbia, Yale, the American Institute of Mining Engineers and the Association of the 11th Regiment of Engineers. Professor James F. Kemp delivered the memorial address, and has prepared for the Institute the following account of Captain Irving's life, Professor Kemp and Captain Irving having been associated on the most intimate terms for a number of years. , The war has brought home to friends and kin in the western shores of thc Atlantic many losses whose suddenness has the shock of a blow. Many more will follow, but none can leave a sharper sense of regret than the news that the keen and productive mind; the inspiring teacher; the successful and considerate editor, the fine, true man and friend had all passed away when John Duer Irving made the final great gift to the service of his country, in the cause of decency and right. In the closing days of July, the cable brought the tidings that toward midnight on the twentieth of the month pneumonia had proved too great a tax upon one already worn by excessive labors. John Duer Irving was born in Madison, Wis., August 18, 1874. His father, Roland Duer Irving, was at the time professor of geology, mineralogy and metallurgy in the State University of Wisconsin.' Roland . Irving, the father, had entered Columbia College in 1863, but trouble with his eyes compelled him to suspend his studies in the classical course in his sophomore year, and to replace study with some months of life and travel in England. Ultimately his eyes became stronger, and he entered the School of Mincs, completing the course for the degree of Engineer of Mines in 1869, with the third class graduated. The class of eleven contained other future geologists. It numbered on its roll Henry Newton and Walter P. Jenney of the early survey of the Black Hills, where John, future son of Roland, was in the course of years to make his doctor's dissertation, and with its publication his really serious entrance into the profession. Roland Irving was a favorite student of Professor J. S. Newberry, affectionately known to all of his students as "Uncle John," and after some experience in mining and smelting in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, joined the Ohio Survey under Dr. Newberry. The work in Ohio was largely performed during the vacations of the University of Wisconsin, to whose chair Roland Irving was called in 1870. Later, his residence in Wisconsin led to two events of prime importance in the history of American geology. He began the study of the Gogebic iron range and caught the clue to the origin and stratigraphy of the iron ores of all the Lake Superior ranges; and he later undertook the mapping and description of the copper-bearing rocks of the Lake Superior basin. The formative years of the son, John, were passed in a home where the father.

The concentration of a solute in a dilute ),zetallic solution may be measured by any of several parame- ters including weight percent, atom fraction, atom ratio, and lattice ratio. The ratio of filled to unfilled interstitial sites is useful for interstitial solutes. A variable 2 proportional to this ratio is used as a measuve of concentration. For component 2 irz a bitzary solution z2 = n2/Ym - nz/b) where b is the numberber of interstitial sites per lattice atom. When this is done the derivative is found to be constant in each of the ternary solutions studied. The activity coefficient of sulfur in a complex liquid iron solution may be expressed as where nk is a second-order cross product determined in the quaternary solution Fe-S-j-k. The equation is used to calculate tlze activity of sulfur i)z three sevetl- component solutions. IN thermodynamic calculations concerning dilute solutions it is unnecessary to invoke laws and relations which extend across the concentration range to include concentrated solutions. In most binary metallic systems, as arkeen&apos; has recently pointed out, there exist two terminal composition regions of relatively simple behavior, connected by a central region of much greater complexity. When the solute is a nonmetal there is only one such region and in many systems the concentration range is extremely limited. It is the purpose of this paper to suggest a method for the calculation of activities in such a terminal region in which one or more solutes are dissolved in a single solvent of predominantly high concentration. HENRY&apos;S LAW In the usual textbook statement of Henry&apos;s law, concentration is stated in mole fraction. This has the advantage that it makes Henry&apos;s law thermodynamically consistent with Raoult&apos;s law. Since all measures of concentration at infinite dilution are related by simple proportion it follows that mole fraction, molality, atom ratio, weight percent, or any other unit of concentration can be used with the appropriate constant. At finite concentrations, however, calculations based on the law depend upon the unit employed. Deviations from Henry&apos;s law at finite concentrations depend upon the composition variable employed. They are evaluated in terms of activity and interaction coefficients2 which have become familiar features of metallurgical thermodynamics. It is the purpose of this paper to propose a measure of concentration for metallic solutions containing interstitial or nonmetallic solutes by means of which the calculation of activities in complex solutions may be simplified. The discussion will be restricted to free-energy interaction coefficients3 typified by Wagner&apos;s c|a BINARY SOLUTIONS The several measures of concentration which are to be considered are shown in line a of Table I. The corresponding activity coefficients are in line b and the deviation coefficients, sometimes called self-interaction coefficients, are in line c. Henry&apos;s law simply states that the activity coefficient approaches a constant value at infinite dilution. By adoptihg the infinitely dilute solution as the reference state and defining the "Henrian" activity as equal to the concentration in this state, the activity coefficient is always unity at infinite dilution. This convention is far sim~ler and more useful in dilute solution than emploiment of the &apos;Raoultian" activities and it will be used in the following discussion. The several definitions and equations of Table I will be referred to by means of their coordinates in the table. Early observations of deviations from Henry&apos;s law in metallic solutions were shown graphically4 rather than analytically. For the case of sulfur in liquid iron5 the slope of a plot of logfs vs (%S) was constant in the range 0 to 4.8 pct S, indicating constancy of eh2&apos; in Ic. He was proposed by wagnerz and has been widely adopted. The a function of IIIc recently employed by ~arkenl was designed specifically for dilute solutions. Darken has shown that the value of a12 remains essentially constant for many binary solutions within a substantial range of compositions. Large macroscopic nonmetallic inclusions were related to altered fireclay refractories by chemical and microscopic means. Pouring refractories are discussed as a source of these large inclusions. Nozzles and wells are major contributors. Use of alkali and titania contents as tracers is described. Recommendations are offered to minimize the sources of inclusions from pouring refractories. IN any attempt to improve the cleanliness of plain carbon and alloy steels, consideration must be given not only to the proper deoxidation practice to minimize inclusions, but also to sources of inclusions from pouring refractories. In some cases, the inclusions resulting from deoxidation may be minor in amount, yet a relatively dirty steel may be produced as a result of improper care in the pouring practices for the steel. The number of studies of inclusions resulting from pouring refractories has increased recently and some excellent reports on this subject have already been published.&apos;4 Some of these reports were reviewed briefly in a companion paper by M. P. Fedock.5 Mr. Fedock&apos;s contribution is a fine addition to the studies necessary to improve steel cleanliness for the ultimate benefit of all steel producers and consumers. In the interest of constantly improving cleanliness, the authors have been actively engaged for the past two years in experimentation to determine more closely the sources of inclusions in steel. One phase of this work was associated with efforts to define more closely the sources of macroscopic inclusions which have been experienced on occasional heats. The term "macroscopic inclusions" is defined in general as those inclusions which are visible to the naked eye or at low magnifications of the order of less than X25. These inclusions sometimes can be seen in the macro-etch tests of billets and slabs. This report summarizes a few of the field experiments and laboratory studies conducted at the South Works of the United States Steel Corp., which were made regarding nozzles, wells, and ingot scums, as well as inclusions occurring in steel products. The data in the present study, together with the data of Mr. Fedock concerning ladle erosion, should be of value in regard to future studies of inclusions arising from pouring refractories. The knowledge gained as a result of data collected thus far at South Works has been helpful in improving the cleanliness of the products and in pointing the way toward further improvements. Similarity of Large Inclusions to Refractories and Altered Refractories In the routine inspection of billet etch tests, occasional inclusions visible to the naked eye have been observed. These large inclusions most frequently occur near the top of the ingot and near the billet surface. When such material was encountered, careful examinations were made in an attempt to determine the origin of these inclusions. In a relatively few cases, examination revealed that the material was unaltered fireclay refractory of a type similar to that used for hot-top material, with only the surface of the inclusions having an altered appearance under the microscope. The maintenance of the common gold standard is the most important cooperative undertaking in the world. The war broke up this relationship and brought about a state of great disorder in the currencies and exchanges. After the war the countries all began to grope their way back to the gold standard as the best means of establishing trade and financial relations with each other. With this movement began a general decline in commodity prices. The question has been raised whether the world&apos;s return to the gold standard was not forcing prices back to the prewar level. Also, the question is raised whether the world has not outgrown the supply of gold as the basis of credit. Because Europe readjusted its monetary units to conform to the higher level of prices there is no pressure on prices on this account. Furthermore, a large amount of gold formerly in hand-to-hand circulation passed out of circulation and has been added to the central bank reserves. The gold reserves of 36 countries increased approximately 100 per cent from the outbreak of the war to June 30,1930. The increase is much larger than the average increase of prices in any of the important countries, at any time since 192.5. As gold in the central banks of issue is far more effective for all business purposes than gold in circulation, the gold scarcity argument has little basis as applied to this time. The abnormal distribution due to the war was to the disadvantage of business everywhere. Credit was scarcer and dearer in some countries. The inflation in this country might have been greater had the production of gold been greater. The argument supporting the theory of a scarcity of gold assumes as fundamental that general price changes must be accounted for by changes in the price equation on the side of money. This is disproved in every period of business depression. A downward price movement is characteristic of every period of business recession. Important discoveries of gold must be made even to maintain present gold production, in the face of which the world&apos;s business is bound to continue increasing. It cannot be doubted that some way will be found

William F. Hosford, Jr. (Massachusetts Institute of Technology)—Dr. Hauser has used a very interesting method to study the interaction of dislocations on different slip systems, but it should be pointed out that the analysis of the experiments is subject to a serious criticism. He states that "the effect of the compression can be adequately described by one slip system." The effect of frictional constraint during the compression makes this quite unlikely. When a block of metal is compressed its lateral expansion requires a sliding of the metal over the compression platens. The role of friction in the interface between the deforming metal and the platens is to increase the normal force required for the compression. Analyses1213 have shown that, in general, the additional force, p, required for the compression is a function of l/h where is the coefficient of friction, I is the length of the speci- men in contact with the platens. For a constant COefficient of friction, isho&apos; shows that P should increase exponentially with pl/h for both plane strain and axially symmetric compression. For a compression specimen, Fig. 7, whose cross section perpendicular to the compression axis is a rectangle whith one dimension L, much larger than the other W, a much larger force would be required for appreciable flow parallel to L than for flow parallel to U7. Therefore lateral strain in the W direction, EW, should be much greater than the lateral strain in the L direction EL. Since L/H = 14.5 for Dr. Hauser&apos;s crystals, and since no lubrication was used, it seems questionable that appreciable lengthening of the crystals could occur. Because the theories of frictional constraint have been derived for isotropic polycrystalline materials, it was decided to make experimental measurements on a single crystal. A section 3.590 in. long was sawed from an aluminum single crystal with a square section of 0.249 in., so that L/W= 14.4. This crystal was tested in compression between dry ground steel platens. Fig. 8 shows the orientation of the crystal and the axis of compression. The face for compression was chosen so that the operation of the single-slip system which would be predicted in the absence of friction would lead to a larger strain in the length direction than in the width direction. The dimensional changes of the width and length as well as the height were measured frequently during the compression with micrometers. Width strains were calculated from the average of readings near each end and at the center. A plot of the length strain, EL, against the width strain E w is given in Fig. 9. The slope indicates that the EL amounted to only 2.5 pct of cw. Other compression tests on similar crystals with shorter lengths also showed severely limited elongation. Even for a crystal with L/W = A.0, EL was only about 26 pct of cw. Because of the frequent interruptions of the tests for dimensional measurements should have decreased the frictional constraint by allowing a reseating of the platens, even smaller elongations under continuous testing seem probable. These tests on long narrow crystals show that essentially plane strain conditions prevailed. We may assume that Dr. Hauser&apos;s crystals deformed similarly. On the basis of metallographic analysis, incipient melting data, thermal analysis work, and X-ray diffraction, phase relationships in the 0 to 50 atomic pct alloy content were carefully resolved. Phase relationships in the higher alloy content regions were outlined. A single intermediate phase, peritectically formed, of the form ZrX2 was established in each system. A eutectic and a eutectoid were found in the zirconium-rich region of both systems. Appreciable solubility of molybdenum and wolfram was found in ß zirconium, but only a slight solubility in a zirconium. PREVIOUS work on these systems was limited to X-ray investigations of the intermediate phases1, 2 and preliminary surveys of the zirconium-rich alloys." The diagrams presented were determined principally by metallographic, thermal analysis, and incipient melting techniques. In accordance with the Atomic Energy Commission contract requirements, phase relationships up to 50 atomic pct molybdenum or wolfram were carefully resolved, while only a limited amount of work was done to outline the 50 to 100 atomic pct alloy region. A description and analysis of the metals used in the preparation of alloys for this study are included in Table I. A "low-hafnium" zirconium crystal bar, produced by the decomposition of a volatile iodide onto a hot filament, was employed for these studies. Westinghouse "Grade 3" crystal bar was used for all alloys. The zirconium, as received, was coated with corrosion product from a standard autoclave test by which its grade designation is determined. This was removed by a sand-blasting and HF-HNO, pickling technique developed by the Atomic Energy Commission. The bars were cold rolled to approximately 1/32 in. sheet, pickled for iron removal, sheared to 1/4 in. squares, washed with acetone, and stored for furnace charge. Molybdenum sheet. 0.003 in. thick, 0.001 to 0.005 in. wolfram wire, and M in. wolfram rod crushed to granular form, from Fansteel Metallurgical Corp., were used as alloying stock. Melting Procedure A nonconsumable electrode arc furnace identical to that described in detail by Hansen et al.4 was used. The source of power for melting Zr-Mo alloys was a 400 amp dc welding generator, while a 900 amp dc generator was used for preparing Zr-W alloys. Electrode tips of the same material as the alloy addition were employed in both systems, i.e., molybdenum tips were used for Zr-Mo alloys, and wolfram tips for Zr-W alloys. This precluded any possible electrode contamination during arc melting. Ingots of 20 to 30 g of Zr-Mo alloys were melted under high purity helium in the cavity of a copper block insert in a spun copper crucible. Homogeneity was insured by remelting all ingots four to six times without opening the furnace. Due to the large difference between the melting points of wolfram and zirconium, direct melting of the charged metals as above generally yielded ingots containing unmelted wolfram particles. This was overcome, after many variations in technique, by melting a pure wolfram charge at high power levels (700 to 900 amp) and slowly adding zirconium to form a master alloy. THE subject of blast-furnace slag is one which has had much consideration, particularly from the scientific standpoint, and several years ago technical literature contained many learned discussions on the oxygen-ratio of the acids and the bases, all on the assumption that acids and bases must be present in a ratio depending on molecular weight and chemical valency. Much work has also been done, sometimes in conjunction with the former, on the total heat and the temperature of initial fusion or softening of various slags. A wider knowledge of the blast-furnace now enables us to say that for practical purposes this work has been of almost no value. It is now generally admitted that on the physical side the important point of a given slag is neither its total heat of fusion nor its softening-point, but its free-running temperature, since this is the critical temperature of the furnace. This temperature bears no definite relation to the softening-temperature, as determined by Seger cones, for instance, because some slags melt relatively like ice, with a very short viscous-range, while others melt relatively like tar, with a very long viscous-range. In one the difference between the softening- and the free-running temperature may be very small, as little as 100° F., while in another this difference may easily be 200° or 300°. The importance of this difference is so great in practice as to destroy completely the value of exhaustive investigations, even such as those of 0. INTRODUCTION Preceding papers presented in this symposium have considered the influence of various parameters, such as geologic structure, groundwater, etc., on the stability of rock slopes and have given some analyses and guide lines for slope design. To carry out such analyses it is necessary to put numbers to these parameters; where possible, this is best done on the basis of in- situ observation and measurement. Since none of the design analyses can be considered exact and since conditions vary during excavation, it is also desirable to monitor the behaviour of the slopes as the excavation proceeds. In this manner a feedback of information on the actual excavation conditions can allow a continuous reassessment of the design parameters to be made and can give early warning of incipient failures. The purpose of instrumenting rock slopes is thus to provide information which fits into one of two categories: (a) To give basic data to assist on-site assessment and design of the rock excavation. (b) To provide data for the control and assessment of safety during excavation. The purpose of this paper is to review briefly some of the instruments and measuring techniques available for gathering this data and to indicate where such data may prove useful. This is not a comprehensive review of all available instrumentation but, rather, is a survey of some of the instruments and techniques with which the authors have had some experience and which have proven useful. STRUCTURAL ASSESSMENT Whilst most structural assessment of a site is done on the basis of geologic mapping and core examination, there exists some instrumentation which can, in particular circumstances, assist in this assessment. Seismic instruments can be used to determine the geometry of formations and to give an indication of the relative competency of rocks. These instruments operate using seismic reflection or refraction techniques and, although mainly confined to shallow sub-surface exploration, can be useful in distinguishing between soil/ bedrock contacts and, in some cases, the extent of weathered surface rock.

The preparation of ores for market is primarily a business enterprise, and by and large the individual operator does not bother his head about squandering our national resources or making easier the job of the smelterman. Having accepted such ore as he may get fro111 the mine, his job is to make the best possible showing with his mill fro111 the standpoint of financial return. His success is measured in dollars and cents, and he has no rightful reason to expect more than scant acknowledgment of any other achievements from the stock- holders of his company who in the last analysis are his employers.

Boron increases the hardenability of hypoeutectoid steels by decreasing the nucleation rate of ferrite and bainite. It is postulated that concentrations of lattice imperfections, such as exist at the grain boundaries, furnish the necessary energy for nucleus formation. Boron, because of its atomic diameter, will concentrate at lattice imperfections where sites of suitable size are present. Boron will decrease the energy of these local areas by occupying these sites. This mechanism accounts for the large increase in hardenability observed with small amounts of boron. The loss of the boron hardenability effect and the boron precipitate formation are explained on the basis of increased concentration of boron at the grain boundaries either with increasing boron content of the material or with increasing temperature. COMMON alloying elements affect both the nucleation and growth rates of the austenite decomposition reactions.&apos; This effect is largely a result of the slow diffusion rates of these elements. Although a small addition of boron markedly increases the hardenability of steel, the diffusion rate of boron, which is of the same order of magnitude as that of carbon, can hardly account for this effect. An addition of boron in the range of 0.001 to 0.003 pct is about as effective as an addition of 0.30 pct Mo, 0.40 pct Cr, or 1.25 pct Ni in increasing the hardenability of a 0.40 pct C steel;&apos; however, increasing the carbon content of the steel decreases the effectiveness of the boron addition."&apos; The difficulty in understanding why so small an addition of boron can replace much larger quantities of the more strategic alloys, together with the erratic behavior sometimes encountered in boron-treated steels, has interfered with their general acceptance by industry. In the belief that an understanding of the mechanism by which boron increases the hardenability of steel should lead to a more general acceptance of boron-treated steels, a research investigation to determine this mechanism was undertaken at Battelle Memorial Institute under sponsorship of Wright Air Development Center. Experimental Work In order to study the effect of boron on the transformation of austenite to ferrite and bainite, a group of steels was made with a basic composition similar to that of the SAE 8600 series. This base composition was chosen because it has sufficient hardenability to permit accurate measurement of the times required for transformation to start at various temperatures. The chemical analyses of the steels used in the first part of this investigation are listed in Table I. These steels were made as 200 lb heats in an induction furnace. The furnace charge was Armco ingot iron with the alloying elements added as ferroalloys. After the alloy additions were made, the heat was deoxidized with 0.125 pct Al. A 100 lb ingot was cast and an addition of 0.003 pct B, as ferroboron, was made to the metal remaining in the furnace. This metal was cast into a second 100 lb ingot. The ingots were forged to 11/4 in. diam bar stock from which end-quench hardenability specimens were obtained. Part of this material was further reduced by hot rolling to lx¼ in. bar stock from which specimens were obtained for isothermal transformation studies. Studies of Nucleation and Growth: End-quench hardenability tests were performed on these steels, using an austenitizing temperature of 1600°F. The hardenability curves, shown in Fig. 1, indicate that boron treatment resulted in considerable increase in hardenability of the steels. Any such change in hardenability must result from a change in the transformation rate of the austenite, and these rate changes can be established readily by isothermal transformation studies. Isothermal transformation studies were conducted on these steels as follows: specimens were austeni-tized at 1600°F for 15 min, transferred to a lead bath operating at a constant subcritical or intercritical temperature, held for various lengths of time, and water quenched. The specimens were sectioned for metallographic examination to determine the amount and the type of transformation products present. In order to determine the effect of boron on the formation rate of ferrite, isothermal transformation tests were made on the 0.20 pct C steel in both the boron-treated and boron-free condition at an intercritical temperature of 1375°F where ferrite is the only decomposition product of this low carbon austenite. The results of these tests are shown in Fig. 2, where the percentage of ferrite formed is plotted as a function of time at temperature. It is apparent that boron markedly decreased the transformation rate of austenite to ferrite at this temperature.

THE Sub-province of Benguet is in the North Central part of the Island of Luzon. Baguio, the capital, is situated on a piateau 5000 ft. above sea level, and is the main health resort of the Philippines. It is rapidly becoming the favorite resort for the China Coast as well, and has many miles of beautiful, curving drives with nearly every pine-covered knoll surmounted by a summer home. The United States Army has a recreation post here, known as Camp John Hay, with a well-equipped hospital, and there is a Country Club with a good golf course adjacent. The weather during the winter months and until late spring is ideal. The business center consists mainly of Chinese and Japanese stores, several hotels, and a large public market, in which are displayed all of the vegetables of the temperate zone, which are flown near Baguio, and many tropical and other products brought up from below. This district is reached from the Coastal Plain either by the old Benguet road built in 1904 by the United States Government, or by the Naguilian road, built some years later. The former is now a toll road, with a line of stages operating over it to and from Des Mortes in connection with the government-owned rail- road. Auto travel from Manila is also along this road, the trip from Manila to Baguio requiring about seven hours, following up the great valley north of Manila for nearly 150 miles to the lower end of the Benguet road, and thence to Baguio, 25 miles. This is an interesting, scenic trip; the road is especially famous for the zig zags where it climbs out of the canyon of the Bued River to the plateau. In the September number of the National Geographic Magazine, a fine aerial picture of this road, as well as of other interesting points in various parts of the Philippines, appears. Freight for the district is taken in mainly over the Naguilian road connecting with the railroad at Bauang. This route follows the ridges of the mountain slope with broad vistas and views of the coast.

The production of petroleum in New York state in 1942 amounted to 5,410,000 bbl. This represents an increase over each of the four preceding years, and, with the exception of 1937, is the largest production since the peak of over six million barrels in 1882, shortly after the discovery of oil in Allegany County. The oil industry in New York is virtually stabilized and there has been little or no exploration for new sources of supply in recent years. The boundaries of the present fields were established more than 30 years ago and since then no additional reserves have been found. Deep drilling for natural gas during the past 10 years both within and without the oil fields has failed to find oil in quantity below the present producing sands of Devonian age. Oil Since 1882, the New York fields have produced approximately 140 million barrels of oil. Of this amount, 65 million was produced up to the year 1919 by ordinary pumping methods; that is, without flooding by water or the use of other secondary-recovery methods. In the year 1919, when a law was passed making the use of water-flooding methods legal, the oil production, of the state amounted to only 851,000 bbl. In the 23 years since 1919, there have been produced in the state 75 million barrels, or 10 million more than in the previous 37 years, which included the period of flush production. Price.—On March 26, the price of crude oil was raised from $2.75 to $3.00 per barrel, hut this increase had little or no effect on the number of wells drilled. In the Allegany field, which accounts for three fourths of the state&apos;s oil production, 1259 wells were completed in 1942, 7 less than in 1941. The smaller number of wells drilled was not only due to the shortage of labor but also was caused by the fact that in water-flooding territory a definite program for drilling wells is followed, and the flush period of an oil well is not usually reached in time to profit by any given price increase. Daily Production.—All of the oil wells in New York state, some 21,000 in number, are small producers. The average daily oil production is 7/10 bbl. per well. Under good flooding conditions, a maximum production of 5 to 8 bbl, a day is reached about one year after the flood begins to act on the well. In 5 years the daily production usually is less than one barrel. Although most of the oil in New York is produced by flooding, an estimated 2500 old wells produce without flooding. Some of these produce as little as 1/20 bbl. a day and are pumped only at intervals. The small producing Wells are mostly on lands leased to the larger oil companies and later will be included in a flooding program. At present, they are pumped only because the owners of the land insist on the royalty. Government Aid Needed.—Because of its good lubricating qualities, New York oil is one of those for which there is an insistent and growing demand, but even at its present price of $3.00 per barrel, many of the operators are producing at a loss.
