The Round Hill gold-scheelite deposit is located three kilometres from Macraes Flat and approximately 60 kilometres due north of Dunedin, New Zealand. A mining feasibility study is currently being undertaken on the deposit by BHP Minerals (New Zealand) Limited, who are the managers and operators of a Joint Venture with Home Reef Mining Limited. BHP has a 70 per cent equity in the project area.

In this paper, the surrounding rocks and the supports in a longwall are taken as an integral, i.e. a system. The structural characteristics and behavior of the system are discussed based on in-situ observations. A set of equations, which describe the interaction among the support, immediate roof and main roof, are developed. These equations can be used to design the longwall powered supports more reasonably and economically.

Alaska?s known mineral endowment includes some of the largest and highest grade deposits of various metals, including gold, copper and zinc. Recently, Alaska has also been active in the worldwide search for sources of rare earth elements (REE) to replace exports now being limitedby China. Driven by limited supply of the rare earths, combined with their increasing use in new ?green? energy, lighting, transportation, and many other technological applications, the rare earth metals neodymium, europium and, in particular, the heavy rare earth elements terbium, dysprosium and yttrium are forecast to soon be in critical short supply (U.S. Department of Energy, 2010). The REE, accompanied by other high field strength metals (such as Nb, Zr, Ti, Th, W), are associated with alkaline complexes of the Hogatza Belt in northwest Alaska; peraluminous tin-granites of the Ruby batholith in central Alaska and the Porcupine plateau in the northeast; and peralkaline intrusive complexes in the southwest Alaska Range west of Anchorage, and on Prince of Wales Island in southeastern Alaska. Limited evidence suggests that the heavy REE are associated with deposits that became more highly evolved by late hydrothermal processes.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The formation of orogenic gold deposits is commonly a two-stage process. The first stage involves preconcentration of gold in a suitable source rock, such as carbonaceous black shales, felsic volcaniclastics or komatiitic volcanics. The second stage involves the release of gold (commonly with arsenic and/or tellurium) from the source rocks during metamorphism or magmatic intrusive events, accompanied by the replacement of source rock pyrite by pyrrhotite. Recent research suggests that synsedimentary gold trapped in the structure of diagenetic arsenian pyrite in reduced carbonaceous facies of continental margin sedimentary basins is an ideal source of gold for many orogenic and Carlin-style gold deposits. The conversion of diagenetic arsenian pyrite to pyrrhotite during basin closure and greenschist facies metamorphism is the key process releasing gold and arsenic to the metamorphic fluid, with metal deposition in structural trap sites to form the deposits.CITATION:Large, R R, 2015. In 1985 the U.S. Bureau of Mines evaluated the mineral resources of tie Bruneau River and Jarbidge River study areas, Owyhee County, ID, for the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. The study areas, separated by a narrow corridor, include 90,000 acres of the 107,020-acre Bruneau River Wilderness Study Area (ID-111-17) and 47,000 acres of the 75,340-acre Jarbidge River Wilderness Study Area (ID-17-11). They lie 26 miles and 55 miles, respectively, due south of Mountain Home, ID. Approximately 38 placer claims for gold and 182 lode and placer claims for jasper, agate, and limestone were located within and adjacent to the study areas from 1893 to 1981. Currently, there are eight mining claims for jasper at Indian Hot Springs along the corridor between the study areas.

In the fiscal years 1946 and 1947 the number of mine explosions decreased compared with the preceding years. However, the loss of life was so serious during the fiscal year 1947 the period when the Government administered bi- tuminous-coal and lignite mines that from April to June 1947 extraordinary measures were taken in mines then under Government possession to obtain com- pliance with provisions concerning rock dusting, ventilation, and blasting that had not been followed. The great loss of life in explosions during the fiscal year 1947 as compared with 1944, 1945, and 1946 is not easy to explain, but the necessity for maintaining adequate protection has been definitely demonstrated. Management, workers, and inspection agencies alike must keep the mines reasonably safe against explosions or allow them to lapse into a condition where chance is the principal protection against disaster. The at- tention given to protecting coal mines and the men employed in them against mine fires, following the disastrous fires in 1944 and 1945, has at least tem- porarily controlled this hazard loss of life from coal-mine fires was re- duced to 1 fatality in 1947. The number of fires was also less, and progress has been made in reducing the heavy losses in both life and property from un- derground coal-mine fires that occurred in the two years mentioned. Fatalities from mine explosions during the past 6 fiscal years, July 1942 to June 1947, totaled 674, and there were 149 explosions; during the preceding 6 years there were 655 fatalities in 132 explosions. The 6 fiscal years 1942- 47 cover the active period of Federal coal-mine inspection. During the fiscal year 1947, there were 154 fatalities from explosions compared with 58 during the fiscal year 1946, 64 in 1945, 94 in 1944, 152 in 1943, and 152 in 1942.

The chemistry of sulfide roasting is analyzed to show those aspects of performance which Thecan be predicted from considerations of thermodynamic equilibrium. It is concluded that equilibrium calculations can serve as a yardstick for prediction of roaster-gas composition and sulfate formation in the calcine for fluid-bed roasting practice. A method of calculation which combines the equilibrium and stoichiometric factors is outlined, and illustrated by an example from the roasting of Cu-Fe sulfides. ON first examination the roasting of sulfides would not seem to be a process to which equilibrium calculations could be applied to yield results of practical value. The burning of sulfides is an ex-tremely spontaneous reaction, excess air is always used to obtain rapid reaction, and in most traditional roaster designs (hearth roasting) the temperature and gas composition vary widely from point to point in the roaster. These are all conditions which promote a non-equilibrium state in the roasting process. However, the introduction of the fluid-bed roaster1 has brought to roasting practice new conditions of operation, so that equilibrium calculations can be used to predict certain limited aspects of practical operation. The fluid bed is characterized by uniformity of temperature, gas composition, and calcine composition from point to point throughout the bed. These relatively uniform properties of the bed make the meaningful calculation of the equilibrium state of certain reactions in roasting possible. It is the purpose of this paper to analyze roasting from an equilibrium viewpoint, to show where the method may be expected to yield valuable information, where it fails, and to outline methods of calculation. Main Roasting Reaction The reaction MS (s) + 3/2 0, = MO (s) + SO, [I] might well be called the main roasting reaction. It adequately accounts for the well known facts that metal sulfide and air are the main reactants, and metal oxide and SO, the main products. Deviations from this simple stoichiometry will be discussed under side reactions. For all metal sulfides, Reaction 1 is strongly exothermic and the equilibrium position is far to the right. Since the reaction is exothermic, the equilibrium shifts in the right-to-left direction as the temperature is raised. However, at all practical roaster temperatures (between 500" and 1200°C), the amount of this shift is small, and the equilibrium position remains far to the right. The main roasting reaction is essentially irreversible, and the application of equilibrium considerations to this reaction will not be! a fruitful field of investigation. A knowledge of the rate of this reaction. although not the proper subject of this paper, is of great importance to the roasting process. Analysis of the factors which influence this rate shows that: 1) The rate will increase rapidly with increased temperature. 2) The rate will be proportional to the partial pressure of oxygen at the surface of the reacting particle. Because of diffusion effects, the partial pressure of oxygen at the particle surface may be considerably less than in the bulk of the roaster gas. For this reason, intimate contact between gas and solid and high relative velocity between gas and solid, such as can be obtained in a fluid bed or flash roaster, will markedly increase the rate of reaction. 3) The rate will be proportional to the surface area of metal sulfide. Therefore, smaller particle size will permit a more rapid rate per unit of weight. To achieve practical rates of roasting the partial pressure of oxygen in the roaster gases must be maintained at a finite level at all times. Even where the gas-solid contact is very good, as in the fluid-bed roaster, the oxygen content of the gas must not be allowed to drop below some limiting value (perhaps 1 pct), or the rate of the main roasting reaction will become too small for practical operation. The mineralogy and microstructure of mattes from the nickel flash smelter at Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, have been studied. The flash furnace matte consisted mainly of an intimate mixture of pentlandite and heazlewoodite with some nickel metal. The electric furnace matte was mainly an iron-nickel alloy with subsidiary pentlandite while the converter matte consisted mainly of heazlewoodite with crystals of nickel metal.

Two small coral islands in the Pacific Ocean, situated close under the equator, and formerly classed among the Line Islands, have, during the last three or four years risen into prominence owing to the valuable deposits of phosphate of lime discovered on them.The deposits of Ocean and Pleasant Islands are under the control of the Pacific Islands Company (1902) Limited, of London and, Sydney, and the high grade of the phosphate, together with the exceptionally favourable facilities for mining this mineral, of which there are several millions of tons on these islands, give this company advantages which enable them to command the Australian and New Zealand markets, and also to make large contracts with Japan and other countries. Both islands, as far as surface indications are concerned, are entirely constructed of coral, with phosphate on the top from the highest points to the present sea level, there being no sign of volcanic rocks, with the exception of a few pieces of drift pumice on the coast.Banaba (Paanopa according to. the Admiralty charts), also known as Ocean Island, was discovered in 1804. The Huntly West Mine has undergone significant changes in the last two years, which will affect the remainder of the mine's life. The paper describes the evolvement of plans and an overview of the technical considerations made in planning for and implementing the first New Zealand longwall operation. The technical investigations involve the longwall equipment, exploration, ventilation and strata control. The focus on these areas was to ensure that unacceptable project risks were addressed. Implementation of longwall mining at West Mine is planned in three phases, Development, Panel One extraction trial, and Full Longwall operation.   At present the development phase is complete, longwall installation is in progress and production start-up is planned for the end of August, 1991.

"The Central Mukur deposit was discovered by the Semipalatinsk Geological Exploration Expedition (GEE) during detailed searches from 1977 to 1980. Andas Altyn Ltd., a Kazakhstanian gold mining company acquired the property and commenced mining in 1995. In 1998, Andas-Altyn Ltd. became a wholly owned subsidiary of Eurasia Gold Corporation.The Central Mukur gold project covers a linear series of parallel, discontinuous zones of near surface oxide gold mineralization that covers a distance of 7 kilometers and extends past the property boundaries. The oxide gold mineralization is a result of the regional oxidization of a primary sulfide gold mineralization emplaced in a series of shallow dipping thrust faults. Resources as calculated by the GEE are 3.45 mt at an average grade of 1.84 gmt Au in the C1 +C2 category and 7.52 mt at an average grade of 1.80 gmt Au in the P1 category. The Central Mukur Gold Heap Leach Mine consists of an open pit, heap leach pads, and an ion exchange resin gold recovery plant. Limited gold production (<2,500 ounces/year) has been achieved over the past three years leaching run of mine oxide gold mineralization. Gold recovery utiling cyanide to dissolve the Au and ionic resin technology to recover the Au for the leachate is approximately 60%. Loaded resin is shipped to a treatment plant at Almaty where the gold is stripped from the resin, refined and sold.This paper will describe the geology, mining, and processing of the Central Mukur ore. In addition, it will describe what it is like doing business in Kazakhstan and the transition from a Soviet style operation to a more western style operation.INTRODUCTIONThe Central Mukur Mine is owned and operated by Andas-Altyn Ltd. a Kazakhstanian gold mining company located in northeast Kazakhstan. Andas-Altyn is a wholly owned subsidiary of Eurasia Gold Corp., a Canadian public company listed on the Alberta Stock Exchange. The Central Mukur mine consists of a small open pit, and a heap leach operation that utilizes ion exchange resin to recover gold from pregnant solutions. In addition to the Central Mukur mine, Eurasia also owns the Myaly heap leach gold project which is also operated by Andas- Altyn Ltd."

MESABI RANGE ore is mined largely by the open-pit method. This involves having available at all times sufficient working places which in combination will produce ore of guaranteed analysis. Fast- loading power shovels turn out under favorable conditions 1000 tons per hour from each unit. Each unit loads ore differing materially in analysis from that loaded by the others, One may load high grade, another low grade, and another may be in a mixed bank with the lead ore so placed that the product must be mixed at the shovel before it is loaded into cars. In such cases the bank is combed with the bucket, the door being left open to permit the material to fall through.

Within recent years , people have begun to realize the importance and significance of the mining and allied industries . The leading part the engineer plays in civilization is becoming recognized . However , accurate quantitative knowledge of the industrial importance of mining is still seldom possessed except by those close to this business . It is true that there are a few who go to the extreme and represent the whole progress of civilization as a reflection of man's gradual mastery of mineral utilization , but on the whole , the magnitude of the industry is underestimated . The uncertainties of mining , as evidenced by the variable results of prospecting on surface or underground , in an unknown new field or from the bottom levels of a mature mine , the ins and outs of tonnages and metal contents , the possibility of a widespread or even a sudden change between cost and realization-price , add to its picturesqueness and make mining attractive to some . To many , the fact that results are generally more uncertain and less predictable than in other industries lends added charm . The following pages may serve to call attention briefly to the importance of mining relative to other industries in the United States , in Canada , and in the world . Ordinarily , the annual primary mineral production of the United States amounts to about 5 billion dollars . The average for the last five years has been a little over 5 billion dollars . Last year , sadly enough , it was less than 34 billions . Just now , we are on the decline , and have been for the past two years . In Canada , the 5-year average was about 268 million dollars . Last year it was 227 million . Due in part to gold output ( in 1930 , for the first time , Canada's gold production exceeded that of the United States ) , the Canadian average is holding up better than ours . It has been estimated that the average world mineral production over the past five years has amounted to about 12 billion dollars , while in 1931 it was less than 8 billions . The mineral industries are as indispensable for the conduct of modern society as are those of agriculture , but , in the United States at least , they receive far less recognition from the Government . With us , agriculture is fostered by a great department that is maintained by enormous appropriations , while the mineral industries get but little financial support . In the United States , in the calendar year 1930 , the value of production by these two industries were as follows : to 1 . Agriculture ( inclusive of forestry ) 9.9 billion dollars ; mining 4.8 billions ; ratio 2 Direct appropriations by our Federal Government were 109 million dollars to agriculture and 2.8 million to mining , a ratio of 39 to 1. Obviously this is out of balance to the extent of 19 to 1 in favor of agriculture .

Gas well tests were performed on 17 wells in the Roma area. The procedure used in the test programme incorporates an initial isochronal test followed by what is described as the &quot;two flow drawdown&quot; technique. The second flow of the two flow drawdown test was conducted for sufficient time to allow transient investigation of the surrounding reservoir. This combination of tests allows the evaluation of stabilized production capacity in addition to the determination ,of several important reservoir characteristics.It also provides a qualitative indication of reserves, by reflecting the presence or absence of reservoir boundaries within the drainage area affected during the test.

This chapter summarizes data on crude mineral production for the United States, its island possessions, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Included also are tables that show the principal mineral commodities exported from and imported into the United States, and that compare world and U.S. mineral production. The detailed data from which these tables were derived are contained in the individual commodity chapters of volume I and in the State chapters of volume II of this edition of the Minerals Yearbook. Although crude mineral production may be measured at &apos;any of several stages of extraction and processing, the stage of measurement used In this chapter is what is normally termed "mine output." It usually refers to minerals or ores in the form in which they are first extracted from the ground, but customarily includes the product of auxiliary processing at or near the mines.

The ability of companies and countries to mine copper and other mineral commodities competitively and in the process to generate new wealth depends on their mineral endowment. Chile, for example, produces and exports copper because it is well endowed with high-quality, low-cost deposits. This production creates wealth that benefits mining companies and their stockholders, the government, local communities, as well as copper consumers around the world. The widespread perception that mineral endowment must largely determine competitiveness, or what economists call comparative advantage, must be true at any particularly moment. Countries with abundant reserves must be competitive. This follows from the definition of reserves — the quantity of a mineral commodity found in discovered deposits that are profitable to exploit under current conditions. As a result, it is a tautology and not particularly interesting. The important question is what causes reserves to change over time, producing in the process new wealth and shifts in competitiveness?

Exposure?response relationships between the relative risk of lung cancer and quantitative measures of exposure to asbestos are available from a number of epidemiological studies. Meta-analyses of these relationships have been published by Lash et al. (1997) [Lash, T.L., Crouch, E.A.C., Green, L.C., 1997. A meta-analysis of the relation between cumulative exposure to asbestos and relative risk of lung cancer. Occup. Environ. Med. 54, 254?263] and Hodgson and Darnton (2000) [Hodgson, J.T., Darnton, A., 2000. The quantitative risks of mesothelioma and lung cancer in relation to asbestos exposure. Ann. Occup. Hyg. 44, 565?601]. In this paper, the risks derived in these meta-analyses have been compared. Lash et al., concentrated on process and found that the risk of lung cancer increased as the asbestos is refined by processing. Hodgson and Darnton concentrated on fibre type and found that the risk was highest for exposure to amphibole asbestos (crocidolite and amosite), lowest for chrysotile and intermediate for mixed exposure. Some of the differences between the conclusions from the two meta-analyses are a consequence of the choice of studies included. The range of asbestos types included in the studies in the analysis of Hodgson and Darnton was wider than that in Lash et al., enabling differences between fibre types to be analyzed more readily. There are situations where occupational exposure to chrysotile asbestos has shown no detectable increase in risk of lung cancer. The formation of the gas emission zone in longwall mining and the potential amount of gas in this zone are factors of local geology and spatial variability within this geology. Therefore, geostatistical methods can be used for modeling and prediction of gas amounts and for assessing its uncertainty in the gas emission zone of longwall mines. This study used core data obtained from 64 exploration boreholes drilled from the surface to the bottom of the Pittsburgh coal seam in a mining district in the Northern Appalachian basin. After identifying important coal layers for the gas emission zone, semivariogram modeling was conducted for different coal seams to define the distribution and continuity of various attributes. Sequential simulations were performed for stochastic assessment of these attributes to calculate gas-in-place (GIP) in each coal seam. GIP calculations for coals of various gas emissions zones were combined and ranked for their cumulative distribution function to find GIP in the caved zone and in the fractured zone at the 5%, 50%, and 95% quantiles. Fifty percent quantile results were later used to isolate a panel from the whole area and create a mosaic representation corresponding to the daily advance rate of the longwall face. This approach helped to estimate the daily emissions of this panel from the caved zone and from the fractured zone. Results showed that gas-in-place in the Pittsburgh coal seam, in the caved zone, and in the fractured zone showed spatial correlations that could be modeled and estimated using geostatistical methods. This study showed that gas-in- place volumes in the study area may be as high as 12.3 Bscf and as much as 3.5 MMscf per acre of mining.
