Many large (refractory) sulfide gold resources exist in Nevada and other parts of the world that are not amenable to conventional flotation concentration using air as the flotation gas medium. Over the past five years Santa Fe Pacific Gold Corporation (SFPG) has investigated flotation process options to economically treat refractory ores and resources of this type at its Lone Tree and Twin Creeks mines. Conventional flotation technology applied to the original high-grade gold resources at Lone Tree and Twin Creeks was initially unsuccessful. Review and analysis of auriferous (gold-bearing) iron sulfide mineralogical characteristics and flotation ..:hemistry provided a fundamental understanding that led to the development of a new flotation process that SFPG refers to as N2 TEC. This paper discusses the development of this technology and compares N TEC results with conventional flotation practice.

This paper is based on two recently (2002) published reports: - "Breaking New Ground". Final report on the Mining, Minerals, and Sustainable Development Project (MMSD). - "2002 Sustainability Reporting Guidelines". Published by the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). The GRI guidelines can be applied in all kinds of industries and other organizations, whereas the MMSD project report is sector specific. However, both reports center on the three pillars of sustainability. The performance indicators as they are presented in the GRI guidelines have been assessed and compared with the sector specific arguments in the MMSD report. Based on this evaluation, the paper points at some indicators that may be useful in the start-up phase of sustainability reporting, seen from the perspective of the aggregate industry in an industrialized North European country with increasing environmental awareness and pressure on natural resources.

As with most industries, mining must now include in its plan of operation mechanisms to address a project's environmental impact. New regulations have focused attention on the potential environmental impacts of industry, particularly the handling of wastes. Modifications are currently being proposed to the Bevill Amendment. And development is ongoing of Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) Subtitle D regulations specific to mining wastes. The result is a growing concern on the part of lenders, developers, buyers and owners regarding acquisition and ownership of mining properties. One of the most effective tools in managing the regulatory requirements is an environmental audit. An environmental audit can be a literature review to determine regulatory requirements. In Peru, the third destination in worldwide exploration based on expenditure, mining conflicts have spread dramatically over the last decade. Mining companies need to create new initiatives to avoid social conflicts and strengthen the social capital needed to keep mining in a country with proven mineralogical riches. This document provides information about a research project that explored the opinions and experiences of a resource many times overlooked by companies: the human resource. Over 30 surveys were conducted among professionals working at mines in the Peruvian mining industry, in different departments and from different organizational levels. Mining employees acknowledged that they play an important role in the development of company-community relationships and gave their impressions about initiatives implemented by international mining companies in Peru. Mining employees also provided their recommendations to succeed in a location where cultural differences have not been properly considered.

Primary normal long-chain amines are insoluble in saturated brine. Their colloidal solubility (dispersion) in concentrated electrolyte solutions is strongly affected by the presence of surfactants (frothers). This paper shows that a better usage of alcohol type surfactants, which are commonly used in potash ore flotation as frothers, can significantly improve the flotation of both coarse and fine sylvite particles. A new process of potash ore flotation is developed, which includes premixing an effective frother with an aqueous solution of amine or emulsion of extender oil containing amine. With such a combination of flotation reagents, KC1 particles up to 5 mm in size float very well in the short flotation column, and particles up to 2 mm float in a mechanical cell; when used to treat fine fraction-containing sample, this method may as well provide an improved concentrate grade.

Boliden's activities in- clude the marketing of proven Boliden technique and know-how. Boliden Metall - the mining and metallurgical company within the Boliden Group - produces about 13 million mtpy of ores at mines in northern and central Sweden. Boliden has, over the years, become a specialist in processing poly- metallic sulphide ores and its eight concentrators presently serve 15 mines. Boliden has a long history of close cooperation with Swedish and foreign manufacturers in developing new products and processes.

Cement production involves the processing of raw materials that contain - Si02, A1203, Fe203, CaO, MgO, LOI (loss of ignition), S03, K20, Na2O, Ti02, P2055 and Cl- to produce the synthetic mineral mixture called "clinker". The use of other additives - sandstone, flyash, iron ore, and clay - is also mandatory in order to achieve the optimum blending requirements of cement. However, the use of these additives needs to be minimized due to their significantly higher costs ($/Ton). This paper presents a mixed integer programming (MIP)-based optimum quarry scheduling algorithm, which is used to generate quarry plans, satisfying geometric and production capacity constraints while providing minimum cost/optimum blend of raw materials mix to a cement plant. The benefits of this new methodology are demonstrated on a case study.

The exposure of miners to radon gas and its airborne daughter products is a serious health problem which has long been recognized in the uranium mining industry. The association of high exposure to alpha particle emitters with incidence of lung cancer is well established. There continues to be a pressing need to reduce and eventually eliminate the high incidence of occupational lung cancer among uranium miners through the development of new and improved measurement and control technologies. This paper highlights the current efforts of the Bureau of Mines radiation hazards research program. It is aimed at obtaining a fundamental understanding of the behavior and transport of radon and radon daughters, developing more accurate and reliable instruments and measurement methods and developing cost-effective control techniques. Also discussed are the most recent accomplishments and the future research plans of the program.

This paper presents-:a new multivariate mineral resource estimation model, referred to as the Related. Information (RI). Instead of relating a mineral resource descriptor directly to a set of geological variables, the RI model relates the mineral resource descriptor to a synthesized information measure RI, which is created from a set of geological variables. All of the variables are transformed into binary characteristics. This model comprises two stages of estimation: estimation of a synthesized information measure and estimation of mineral resources. The information carried by a variable is classified into three types: mineralized-barren information, mineral resource variation information, and variable-controlling information. The synthesized information measure is defined as the product of the three types of information and the responses of binary geologic characteristics. The RI model is demonstrated on the pegmatitic Nb+Ta deposits in China.

There is a saying, the greater the gratitude, the shorter the speech. That puts me in a quandary, because while I am grateful for the honor you do me today, I also want to talk about a subject very important to all of us. A few months ago, when I was asked to submit a title for my talk, I chose "Quality where it counts." I did so because perhaps the most important thing we at Amax did in our restructuring was to commit to quality in all our businesses - quality people, assets, and operations. Together, they create quality performance, which produces quality growth and increased shareholder value - our prime corporate mission. We are dedicated to quality. At Amax, quality means everything. Today, I want to discuss quality in another context - the need for it in American education and what we have to do to achieve it. If we ignore this need, we will all suffer the consequences. And they will be upon us far sooner than the next century, barely a decade away. I think almost everyone in this room works for an organization that had to restructure in the 1980s. Mining companies that did not, just didn't make it. Well, we did. As an industry, we are seeing improved profits, positive cash flow, and a more competitive position in the world marketplace. But all the restructuring we have done, all the hard work, and all the pain that was part of it, will be in vain if, down the road, we do not have the educated people we need as workers. We need them to design, manufacture, and market the products that use the basic materials produced by the mining industry. Simply put, we are at a crisis point in education today. That is no new revelation. Nearly six years ago, the National Committee on Excellence in Education published its report, "A Nation At Risk." Since then, things have not gotten better. The Wall Street Journal, Business Week, US News & World Report, and Fortune have all recently published stories about the sorry state of education in the United States. The subject has become the topic of TV talk shows as well as national commissions, and for good reason. The pool of young people entering the US labor force is dwindling. In the next decade, 10 million fewer will enter the job market compared to the 1970s. But fewer of them will be qualified to do the jobs available to them. Here's why: • 20% of today's high school students drop out before they are 18 and another 20% graduate functionally illiterate; 40% of today's fourth graders think the world is flat; • 20% of today's sixth graders cannot locate the United States on a world map; • one of every three ninth graders cannot figure the change for a two-item meal - and I'm talking about a Big Mac and fries. These are not just problems of minority kids in big city ghettos. Fully 40% of all young working Americans cannot add up their lunch bill. Three out of every five college freshmen need some kind of remedial work. These statistics are frightening. Particularly so because, while the work force is becoming less qualified and our public education system is getting worse, our products and technologies are becoming more complex. We are approaching a time when we will have machines that recognize handwriting but people who cannot write. We will have technology to take voice commands, but people who do not know what they are talking about. The accelerating pace of technology is changing the nature of the job market. The fastest growing jobs now, and in the years ahead, are in professional, technical, and sales positions requiring the highest education and skill levels. Most of these jobs will require the use of a computer. Yet, 95% of today's graduating high school students have never laid a finger on a computer keyboard. A recent study by the New York Trap Rock Corporation has conclusively determined that the number of blasting complaints is directly related to the noise produced by the blast. In turn it has been known for some years that the noise produced by the blast is directly related to atmospheric structure of temperature, wind, and humidity in the vertical direction. Normally during daylight hours the temperature decreases with altitude at the rate of about five and one half degrees per thousand feet on a sunny day, and to somewhat lesser amounts on cloudy days. Consequently, sound travels slower with altitude because of the lower temperature, and the sound rays tend to bend skyward, and are soon dispersed in the atmosphere. Quite frequently, however, the temperature increases with altitude, and just the opposite effect is attained. That is sound rays are bent downward, and sometimes reach the ground with intensities approaching that at the source. When the temperature increases with altitude a temperature inversion is said to exist. Less frequently than these two atmospheric conditions a condition is observed where temperature remains constant with altitude. This is called an isothermal atmospheric condition, and sound passing through this type of atmosphere tends to travel in straight lines, neither bending upward nor downward. The sound will be greater than normal near the blast, but will dissipate rapidly with distance from the blast site with no zone or zones of silence.

Microcystaline silica has been mined in Illinois from the Clear Creek formation since the turn of the century, especially in the area around Tamms in Alexander County, in the southernmost part of the state. Production of this silica, consumed mainly by the abrasives and coatings industries but also sought after for many filler/extender uses, has grown with the economy with several new applications overshadowing traditional markets in recent years. Such an important commodity was given the early attention of the Illinois State Geological Survey and a very complete report was issued in 1953 (Report of Investigations No. 166), authored by J. E. Lamar. The mining and processing of the silica ore has changed very little since the first reported production in 1906, although emphasis has been placed on the production of the finer sized grades to meet newer market requirements. Industrial Mineral Notes 40, published by the Illinois State Geological Survey in June 1970, describes a method by which a less than 1-micron fraction could be commercially produced from the readily available finest commercial grade presently being marketed (99% minus 10 microns). The finer grades exhibit to a lesser degree the reinforcement, high flatting efficiency, thickening and dry brightness properties associated with the synthetically produced silicas. It is expected that the extremely fine grades of microcrystaline silica will become accepted in the markets that now use a combination of precipitated silica and less expensive extender/filler minerals such as kaolin or calcium carbonate.

INTRODUCTION One of the main advantages of the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) is its adaptability to varying rock conditions. This method is therefore successfully applied when complex geologic features are expected which cause uncertainties in the prognosis of the rock mass behaviour, as was the care at the Arlberg Expressway Tunnel. Furthermore, by employing the NATM problems are avoided when encountering varying geologic conditions or even extension fault zones along the tunnel, as was the case at the Dalaaser Tunnel and Perjen Tunnel. The NATM can also be used for rock and soil. The following examples will show how various rock conditions can be mastered. In accordance with the NATM all tunnels which will be discussed are road tunnels having a cross section area between 70 and 100 m2. The construction consists of a primary support, which ensures stress redistribution during excavation (Figure 1). The primary support is reinforced shotcrete strengthened by steel arches, when necessary, and rock bolts. When encountering rock pressure, swelling rock or soil, the primary support is suplemented by an invert arch. The purpose of the secondary lining is to increase the safety of the tunnel with regard to long-term stress redistribution processes or changes in rock mass properties as well as to protect the insulation. The secondary lining consists of cast concrete without reinforcement and is generally 0.25 or 0.30 m thick.

This is the 10th annual tabulation of US mineral royalties published in MINING ENGINEERING. The first year, 1982, the author solicited information about royalties and the cost of reserves. That column contained only a few royalties - not enough to tabulate. Since then, the response has been sporadic but the entries have grown to more than 300. Some have been deleted. Some of the older information has been deleted to make room for new entries. All indications suggest that the readers enjoy and use the information. But more information is needed. Russian practice In 1989, this column gave a brief history of mineral leasing and royalty payments as the concept applies to mining in the United States. This year's narrative deals with information about the mineral ownership in Russia. That country is in political and economic turmoil, including administrative systems and methods. And many laws are likely to change. What follows describes the Russian system of mineral ownership as of early 1992, according to Kirill Kavun. He begins "All the subsurface space of the Russian Federation with minerals contained belongs exclusively to the state. This forms the Common State Mineral Fund. Land parcels may be state, municipal, public or private property. They may be let to be owned and used by individuals, juridical persons, national/territorial or administrative/ territorial formations." This seems to apply to surface rights, as known in the US.

A traveler driving across desolate central Nevada to the Round Mountain property can easily identify with turn- of-the-century prospectors seeking a fortune, or at least an existence, from the high desert. But now a shadow passing overhead is as likely a sophisticated fighter aircraft from Stillwater Naval Air Station as a circling bird, and the famous trails west show only as historical markers along the highway. Even the approximately 400- km (250-mile) trip southeast from Reno or northwest from Las Vegas takes hours now, not days. And the camps of Round Mountain’s early prospectors have been replaced by one of the world’s largest gold heap-leaching operations. While Round Mountain’s uniqueness begins with its scale, it doesn’t end there. Consider the mine’s low cutoff grade of 0.2 g/t (0.006 oz/st) gold, made possible by a new dedicated (not reusable) leach pad. Also, the operation’s degree of automation means that ore dropped in the south crusher system is not manually handled until it is stripped from the pads. There is the bonus of a geothermal field that is tapped to heat the leach solutions in the winter. And, of course, there was that “unexpected” hitch expected in all mining operations. For Round Mountain, it meant buying a gravity plant to process the gold nuggets discovered last summer in a fault gouge.

INTRODUCTION Engineers involved with rock mechanics know the importance of discontinuities within a rock mass and their effect on its behavior when subjected to loads from structures or construction excavation activities. Various geophysical tools have been developed to provide comparative information on subsurface conditions, such as electrical resistivity, assorted seismic test methods, acoustic tests, etc. While these investigative means have proved invaluable in numerous situations, especially those where site alternatives are being evaluated, they shed little light on the difficult problem of quantifying the rock strength. For that purpose, a laboratory test program of samples obtained in the field is usually undertaken, often in conjunction with a variety of in-situ tests. While standard samples provide sufficient information on the rock properties, questions on the macro-structure of joints, faults, fissures, and their infillings often go unanswered. Presently, attempts are being made to incorporate into rock sampling technology new techniques which are directed towards providing better information on the incidense and orientation of discontinuities. One such device incorporates a scribe knife within the core barrel which scores the sample lengthwise as it is cored. The orientation of the scribe is known, thereby relating the bedding, planes, fractures, etc. to a spatial framework. A second approach, called the Integral Sampling Method, is the subject of this paper. The Sacaton mine is a relatively new open¬pit copper mine owned by Asarco, Inc., which has been in production only a few years. The mineral deposits consist of two ore zones; a western, near-surface zone minable by open-pit methods, and a deeper eastern zone which will have to be mined underground, probably by block caving. The copper deposits are related to small quartz monzonite intrusives implaced into Precambrian granites. Both rock types act as hosts for the copper mineralization, which has been secondarily enriched sufficiently to constitute ore. In the western zone the enriched supergene chalcocite has been subjected to postenrichment oxidation processes with partial destruction of the chalcocite blanket. The deeper eastern chalcocite zone has not been as severely affected by later supergene processes. Several mineralogical populations are represented in the total copper deposit. Leached capping overlies the chalcocite enriched zone, and in the western ore body there is a very irregular interface between the leached and enriched zone, which is complicated by oxide copper minerals irregularly distributed. Primary lower-grade chalcopyrite mineralization occurs below the enriched zone. When mining commenced near the top of the enriched zone, considerable difficulty was encountered in correlating the actual grade of ore in place with the estimated grade of the mining blocks. The mineralogical complexity and fairly wide spacing of diamond drilling made reliable grade estimation of individual ore blocks a difficult procedure.

The known high grade mineral re- sources in the United States are fast becoming exhausted; viable new deposits are more difficult to find and more expensive to develop; operating and capital costs have increased to meet more stringent regulatory standards. By contrast, international producers enjoy a cost advantage as a result of higher mining grades, improving technological competence, and more favorable government support. The domestic base minerals industry is finding it more and more difficult to compete in world markets. It has become essentially a marginal industry today. The current philosophy of taxation in the United States has evolved over the past century. The structure of the taxing system is based on the assumption that a firm must be able to pay its tax imposts out of profits. In principle, firms incapable of supporting the tax load should be replaced by others that can do so. This philosophy applies equally well to the mining industry, so long as it remains economically healthy. However, mineral resources are finite. The situation in the domestic base mineral industry has changed fundamentally in recent times. For the reasons given above, much of the industry now cannot continue to compete profitably in the open world market; and there are no known alternative domes- tic mineral resources more capable of doing so. Under these circumstances it is important to consider the effect of taxation not only on profitability, but also on survivability.

This paper outlines the chance constrained binary integer program developed by the author in his doctoral dissertation at Columbia University, New York, 1973. The optimum planning of a mining program involves the determination of a production schedule which maximizes the net present value of the mining property. The actual mining process has an inherent stochastic and discrete nature. In particular, the demand for the mined product and the grade of the mineralized material in the ore are the two most important stochastic mining variables. The decision to mine or not to mine any block of a mining property is a binary integer variable. This paper outlines the formulation of pit production scheduling problem as a chance constrained binary integer program. The deterministic equivalents of these chance constraints are nonlinear in binary variables which have subsequently been linearized. The planned objective is to meet with a stipulated high degree of reliability, all the random demands as they materialize with a random supply of the commodity being marketed as determined by the eventuating random grade values of the exposed ore blocks and the mining system's production constraints such that the discounted total production costs over the entire planning horizon are minimized or the profits maximized. The emerging surface of the mine in each scheduling period is determined by the values taken by the binary decision variable associated with each block of material in each scheduling period.

Extraction of hard coal reserves, but also of mineral resources in general in the underground coal mines includes in itself many anthropogenic interventions in the earth crust. These interventions are closely associated with the solution of stability problems in the mine and with occupational safety. One of potential applications of such geo-technical interventions in rock mass is the chemical grouting technology. The chemical grouts are very suitable to affect the physical and chemical properties of rock mass. With the present development of chemical grouts, primarily based on polymers, there come into existence new composite materials during the grouting process (the so called geo-composites), which properties significantly differ from the original rock. An important factor, which affects a choice of chemical grouts and at the same time the effectiveness of grouting technology is the resulting properties of geo-composites. The properties of a coal geo-composite differ from the ones of the unmodified coal seam. On the basis of the laboratory geo-mechanical tests, the differences of properties of both material types were found. While the pure coal samples were destroyed very brittle and explosive, the geo-composite samples were making higher level of tenacity and load bearing ability after overstep of material strength. The presented paper discusses the different behaviour of these original and modified coal samples. The X-ray CT scans were used for observation and demonstration of failure evolution in these samples of pure coal and coal geo-composites after compressive loading.
