The Pioche District of Lincoln County in southeastern Nevada (Figures 1 and 2) has been an historically important producer of silver, zinc, and lead. Economic geology of districts in the Pioche area is summarized most adequately in recent reports by Tschanz and Pampeyan (1) and Gemmill (2) and only a few major aspects will be discussed here. Production in the Pioche District began in 1869 and early mining concentrated on silver-bearing fissures in lower Cambrian quartzites. In the early 1870's the Pioche District was second only to the Comstock Lode in world silver production (3). More recent mining activities have centered on the other major ore type in the area, bedded replacement of lower Cambrian carbonates by Ag-Zn-Pb sulfide ore. Production of replacement ore peaked around 1950. The present study is focused on the Pan American Mine because it is an excellent example of low grade carbonate replacement deposits, because there is little structural dismemberment, and because access was readily available. Most previous workers have suggested that both the fissure vein deposits and the bedded replacement deposits of the Pioche districts are a result of spatially related Laramide igneous activity. The purpose of this study is to determine whether ore genesis is a result of igneous activity or if mineralization might be related to late diagenetic processes such as formed Mississippi Valley "type" deposits. Stable isotopes of sulfur, carbon, and oxygen in ore and gangue minerals have been studied to determine the probable isotopic composition of the ore fluid and paleomagnetic studies of the carbonate rocks have been utilized to determine timing of mineralization. Additionally, petrographic and field studies of carbonate lithologies were undertaken in an attempt to delineate non-structural controls on ore localization. These studies are still proceeding and the results presented herein are, therefore, preliminary in nature.

Investments in new technology are often intended to improve the production or cost performance of existing operations. The economics used to justify these projects can be flawed, however, if they do not adequately consider the potential benefits of the alternative: the fully optimized use of the facility's present equipment and personnel. While new technology can be effective, dramatic improvements in production performance can also be achieved through the rigorous application of standard industrial engineering and operations management practices. An intermediate approach may also be effective: many basic improvements in the mine or plant necessary to support new technology will be equally effective when implemented for the facility's present operators. Firms that optimize their present operations are able to save the capital and avoid the risk associated with new technology. These firms will also be able to capitalize more quickly on new technology when it is implemented.

New Zealand has been a significant producer of gold for over a century. Total recorded production is over 850 tonnes. There were three major periods of production: the first and biggest was between 1860 and 1880, the second was between 1895 and 1920 and the third was between 1930 and 1945. After 1945 gold production fell continually until 1980 when the major upward adjustment in gold price led to renewed interest. There have been important new developments in each of the known gold-rich areas: Westland, Otago and Coromandel and exploration for gold in these areas and in previously unprospected regions has reached unprecedented levels. In Westland over 140 gold processing plants are each producing between two and six ounces a day from low-grade placers. A major gold dredging operation will soon be producing over a tonne of gold annually and other new dredges are proposed. There are still vast reserves of gold-bearing gravels in Westland and prospecting is continuing to reveal new resources. In the Reefton area there is renewed interest in gold-bearing quartz reefs which were the source of over a million ounces of gold between 1900 and 1951. New large opencast reserves are now defined.

Introduction Our society is currently experiencing a change in civil philosophy toward US industrialization. We have become increasingly bent on the pursuit of a nirvanic state of zero risk. The money supply has become inversely proportional to its sources. And most mining companies, traditionally conservative, have become increasingly risk conscious. Rising taxes, high inflation, and decades of a steadily decreasing gross national product (GNP) - coincident with moral decay and disarmament - have eroded America's economic health. Psychology of US metal markets has shifted across the economic spectrum to disillusionment and discouragement. The sagging national economy, expanding governmental debt, and a backward mineral policy in concert with worldwide unrest and turmoil have caused great volatility in the metal markets. Congressional inaccessibility of US resources has contributed to its loss in strategic leadership and dependency on foreign suppliers and the common market. Large scale mining activities are now on the decline. And there is an overall slump in mineral exploration in this country. America now faces the sobering reality of almost total importation of 13 key mineral commodities and total dependence on foreign sources for five of them. There is a growing dependency on 21 of the 34 minerals vital to the US economy. And virtually everything needed can be imported directly from third world countries. Almost 85% of the free world's supply or production of vanadium, chromium, platinoids, manganese, and titanium - an essential to the aerospace industry - comes from South Africa. That country now plays a forefront position in supplying the West with minerals. The Soviets have become increasingly aware of this situation. They have made key moves in procuring for their own purposes major raw materials markets, particularly in South Africa. This is obviously threatening to the US' direction and brings about vulnerability to shortages and cutoffs. In spite of these developments and the overall change in the mining industry, there is good opportunity for growth ahead. The way has been paved for the smaller mining companies, particularly the more bullish of these. Smaller mining organizations possess a tight management and strong sense of direction. They can easily adapt to and cope with change. "Windows" that exist in the industry directly depend on a number of factors. These include the busi¬ness climate, market research and planning, management and human resources, applied appropriate technology, favorable hunting ground, and entrepreneurship. Mining as business Mining (and exploration) as a business is by its very nature highly speculative. It involves greater risk for a longer period of time than most other businesses. The entire mineral estate in the US continues to shrink. This is primarily because of various legislated wilderness measures. Consequently, the probability of finding an economic ore deposit in the US has decayed to less than 1%. Although the risk is high, the stakes far outweigh the gamble and are larger than most other businesses can offer. Mining properties, as investments or business opportunities, can provide effective hedges against long-term inflation because the real price for selected commodities, such as gold, may sometimes rise faster than inflation. Recessionary periods seem to provide the best climate for entering the mineral business or for a particular mining organization to expand its activities. Looking ahead and seizing opportunities during a depressed market will pay off. Property payments and royalties are likely to be lower. And the potential for an upward shift in prices for a given commodity is very positive. The decision to invest in a prom-

In 1962 a computerized data processing system was first installed and programmed for the grading of direct-shipping iron ore from the Sept-Iles terminal of the Iron Ore Company of Canada. Over the years several changes and improvements have been incorporated into this system. It is the purpose of this paper to describe its present operation and features. Sept-Iles is located on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River, 500 miles north east of Montreal. The direct-shipping ore is received by railroad from Schefferville, 320 miles to the north in the Knob Lake Iron Range of New Quebec and Labrador. The shipping season extends from mid-March to December. The maximum tonnage handled in this period being 13,045,000 long tons in 1959. Crude ore receipts for 1974 amounted to 6,568,000 tons of direct-shipping and 4,700,000 tons of plant feed material from Schefferville. This was augmented by 4,447,000 tons of concentrate and 7,572,000 tons of pellets from Labrador City 200 miles north of Sept-Iles. The direct-shipping ore has come from as many as ten mines, and grade variations, even-within the same mines, have been sufficient to require blending for uniform, acceptable cargos. Shipments of low phosphorous, non bessemer and manganiforous iron ore are made, to Canada, the United States, Europe and Japan with grade variations to meet customers requirements.

Coal refuse slurries stored in tailings impoundments can potentially lead to environmental concerns such as effluent seepage, property devaluation, and in extreme cases, dam failures. Pressure filtration offers an opportunity to reduce the impoundment requirements by providing significantly drier solids. A full-factorial design was used to study the effects of temperature and pH on dewatering a refuse slurry obtained from a coal preparation facility in Pennsylvania, USA. The experimental results indicated a strong effect of temperature on cake moisture as the cake moisture after about 2800 s was 22% at 43 °C and only 36% at 10 °C for tests conducted at pH 3. ANOVA results confirmed the statistical significance of pH, temperature, and their interaction effect. Also, the results showed no significant differences between the tests conducted near neutral and alkaline pH values at low and ambient temperatures. On the other hand, Tukey’s test indicated higher reductions in cake moisture at higher temperatures for lower pH values. This study affirms the need to monitor and control the pressure filtration process as throughput could significantly vary with changes in temperature and slurry conditions.

The rocks exposed in the phosphate district are of Neogene age and consist of clayey quartz and phosphorite sands overlying phosphatic dolomite. The Bone Valley Formation is redefined as a marine phosphorite containing primary phosphorite and abundant terrigenous sediments. It contains a Middle Miocene vertebrate and invertebrate fauna and conformably overlies the Hawthorn Formation containing similar invertebrate fauna. A new, unnamed formation, with Pliocene and Pleistocene fauna and containing reworked phosphorite, overlies the Bone Valley disconformably. Its phosphorite is derived from the subjacent Bone Valley by post-Middle Miocene erosion and deposition in stream channels and marginal marine environments. The Bone Valley contains two main types of primary marine phosphorite. Orthocbemical phosphorite, a direct precipitate of microcrystalline phosphorite (microsphorite), occurs as a cement or binder in thin beds. Allochemical phosphorite consists of clastic phosphorite particles that were originally formed as microsphorite on another part of the shelf. Microsphorite was deposited in a very shallow open marine environment which had an abnormally high phosphorous content caused by upwelling currents. The mechanism of deposition is still in doubt, but organisms probably were a major factor. Soon after deposition, microsphorite was indurated, periodically torn up, and the resulting fragments transported and deposited elsewhere on the shelf. These processes account for a great portion of the clastic phosphorite in the Miocene deposits of Florida. The primary fossil skeletal material is of minor importance.

The present interest in large diameter grinding mills and the rapidly rising cost of the drive in proportion to the cost of the mill establishes a need to explore the drive system in detail. The drive for a seven to eight thousand horsepower mill will cost from 1350 thousand to $600 thousand which represents nearly half the total cost of the mill package, and requires as much building space as the mill proper. Some of the drive components require a longer time to manufacture and the installation time and costs are equal to those for the mill. It is apparent that the drive has become a dominant factor in the overall mill design consideration. A new plant requires a tremendous investment in both time and money. With the high degree of competition in the mining industry, low capital cost is an exceedingly important factor in the development of a project. It is just as important, however, to insure that the equipment is going to perform satisfactorily for the anticipated life of the project without adding unplanned operating, maintenance and replacement costs. This is the position in which the engineer or designer usually finds himself and is really one of his primary functions -- establishing a realistic compromise between cost and performance.

Nevada is especially well endowed with industrial minerals, both in the number of ore deposits and the diversity of commodities. More than 600 significant industrial mineral deposits, containing 22 principal commodities, are present, in the State. The materials produced in Nevada in 1978 had a value of approximately 113 million dollars, and additional processing of some of them (e.g. gypsum into wallboard, limestone and clay into cement) added considerable more value. Table 1 shows the value of Nevada's industrial mineral production in 1978. Nevada currently supplies 85 percent of the country's barite producing 1.6 million tonnes (1.8 million short tons) valued at 30 million dollars in 1978. Nevada is second in diatomite production and contributes one-third of total lithium produced. Other industrial minerals being produced include clays, fluorspar, gypsum, lightweight aggregates, limestone and dolomite, magnesite and brucite, perlite, salt, sand and gravel, and silica. In general, Nevada produces high-value industrial minerals which are not consumed within the State, but rather, are shipped out of State. In contrast, most more populous states produce larger tonnages of lower value industrial minerals which are consumed chiefly within that state.

Widespread high-calcium (HC) limestones in New Mexico and adjoining areas, are low in magnesium, but some units include shale interbeds that would be deleterious for usage in sulfur removal. In southwest New Mexico, southeast Arizona, and adjoining parts of Mexico, limestones in the thick Mississippian Escabrosa, Pennsylvanian-Permian Horquilla, and Cretaceous U-Bar units are HC as are strata in the Mississippian Lake Valley, Pennsylvanian formations, Permian Hueco, and parts of the Permian Capitan Limestone of south-central and southeast New Mexico and west Texas. In north-central and central New Mexico, many limestones in the Pennsylvanian Madera Formation are HC as are some of the Cenozoic travertines. In northwest New Mexico, where the present-day mine-mouth coal- fired power plants occur, there are no HC limestones, but to the north in southwest Colorado some beds of the Mississippian Leadville Limestone and Pennsylvanian Hermosa Formations are HC. HC limestones considered contain at least 95 percent calcium carbonate and less than 3 to 5 percent magnesium carbonate. Limits for other impurities are alumina, 1 percent; silica, 2 percent; sulfur 0.05 percent; phosphorous, 0.02 percent; and iron oxide, about 1 percent. Chemical and physical requirements differ slightly depending upon the ultimate use.

In the process of quartz purification by calcination water quenching, the different expansion rates of gangue minerals and quartz were used to produce cracks or remove fluid inclusions, which is conducive to subsequent purification. However, the role and mechanism of calcination-water quenching are still lacking in research. In this paper, the position of calcinationwater quenching in gangue quartz purification process was adjusted and the removal effect of calcination-water quenching process at different nodes in the process was explored. The results show that the purification effects of grinding-calcinationwater quenching-classification-acid leaching process and grinding-classification-acid leaching-calcination-water quenching process were relatively good. The main reason is that calcined water quenching can make quartz produce cracks, which are more rough. At the same time, calcined water quenching is located after grinding, which has a larger specific surface area, pore volume and pore diameter, and has a strong adsorption capacity for acid solutions.

Introduction 1300 BC, Egypt. Pharaoh, the god-king, owned all things. He was the only mine operator. As the provider of all things, Pharaoh had great expectations of his officials who gathered the wealth. Pharaoh's official, the mine foreman, was at a gold mine site to see that royal expectations were met. For the official, it could mean a promotion to the good life here and to the godly life hereafter. When he checked the haul for sufficient progress, a lot was at stake. The miner wore a loincloth, perhaps a headband and, if he was a prisoner, ankle manacles. Only an oil lamp helped illuminate the hot, dusty blackness. A fire at the base of the quartz ore face competed for scarce air. The ore so heated crumbled at the prompting of copper wedges. Confined to a crouch, the miner tossed chunks of ore onto a rope-mesh which, when loaded, was drawn up and lugged out. On the surface, the gold was ground to dust. Then it was transported by donkey caravan to the royal depot. There it was weighed, recorded, and distributed to workshops. Many minerals mined Egypt had gold mines to the south in Nubia and to the east in the desert and Sinai. Indeed, gold underwrote Egypt's prosperity. With a constant gold supply, fewer hungry hands robbed burial crypts and tombs. Gold was sacred, "the flesh of the gods." The shiny metal financed the army that policed the desert mining routes and guarded the gold caravans from Bedouin marauders. Gold theft was an offense to the gods. Anyone caught with gold `in his lunchpail,' so to speak, could say goodbye to life, both in this world and the next. In addition to gold, Egypt possessed other mined riches that allowed the Egyptian civilization to flourish. From Sinai and Nubia came copper. So abundant was the red metal that it enabled Egypt to become the supreme power, before the advent of iron. Also mined were amethyst, turquoise, feldspar, jasper, carnelian, and garnet. These were used for the rich inlay work that distinguished Egyptian jewelry and cloisonne. But Egypt's most endurable and awesome material was its stonework - for statues and obelisks and in temples, tombs, and pyramids. Stone quarrying was a vast enterprise. One expedition boasted nearly 10,000 men. These included 5000 laborer soldiers, 130 skilled quarrymen and stonecutters, and - egads! - even 20 scribes. In addition, there were thousands of officials, priests, and officers grooms. There were even fishermen, to provide the multitudes with the catch of the day. Mining methods detailed In 1300 BC, quarrying techniques had changed little since the age of the pyramids some 1300 years before. At that time, in 2600 BC, limestone was locally quarried and fashioned into the blocks of the pyramids. A basic limestone mining method was tunnel quarrying. A ramp was built up to the face of a cliff. A monkey stage was then erected on a ramp. While standing on the stage, quarrymen carved out a rectangular niche in the cliff. The niche was large enough for a quarryman to crawl into. With a wooden mallet, he hammered long copper chisels along the edges of the niche floor to free up the back and sides of the block. The quarryman climbed out of the niche and removed the stage. He then carved out a series of holes in the cliff face for what would be the bottom of the block. The quarryman pounded wooden wedges into the holes. He watered the wedges until they were soaked. The water-logged wedges expanded, splitting the stone along the line of holes. The freed-up block was then levered down from the cliff. On the ground, the blocks were placed on sledges. Men pulled these to nearby water transport. Without block and tackle pulleys, paved roads, and wheels, this was no mean feat. Each block weighed an average of 2.3 t (2.5 st). Whenever possible, the quarrying was done directly from the surface. INTRODUCTION Most metallic minerals and some industrial minerals have a relatively high specific gravity and most have at one time or another been concentrated by gravity methods. The principles of gravity concentration are straightforward, well documented and easy to understand, but in practice there are many pitfalls that await the engineer in the development of an integrated flowsheet. Gravity concentration equipment has a long history of use and there is a great diversity available. The equipment is capable of treating material over a broad size range, only falling off in efficiency in the very fine sizes. Gravity concentration is also inexpensive, generally free of environmental problems, and commercial equipment can process large tonnages of ore with a minimum of capital cost. As might be expected of an efficient and low cost process, the bulk of the tonnage quickly and inexpensively. Another obvious application is treating mineral deposits such as hematite and manganese ores that are sufficiently liberated after a minimum of crushing to allow production of a coarse concentrate that will meet market specifications. Except for hand picking and mechanical sorting, there is no competing process on coarse size material. Conversely, it is sometimes obvious that gravity concentration does not warrant consideration. Examples are ores that require very fine grinding to attain liberation, for ores where the minerals of interest have a gravity similar to the gangue, and ores that are strongly magnetic. Introduction Recognition of Coal Workers' Pneumoconiosis (CWP) as a major occupational disease has affected various aspects of the coal mining industry in the United States as well as in almost all major coal producing countries. Regulations related to the control of coal mine dust forced mine operators to modify their mining and ventilation practices. As the coal production record of the last 15 years shows, this had both direct and indirect impacts on the productivity and production costs. To identify the causes of CWP, many research efforts have been made through- out the world. Most of these studies were epidemiological in nature, attempting to pinpoint exposure and seam variables that affected the incidence of the disease. Other studies have been oriented toward the elemental and mineralogical composition of the coal dust in the mine atmosphere and in the miners' lungs. These studies indicate that there may exist some relationships between the characteristics of the coal mine dust and the prevalence of the disease. Some of the variables that are thought to affect the occurrence of CWP are the mass of the dust in the working place, the rank of the coal, the existence of certain trace elements, the free silica content of the coal, and the existence of other minerals in the respirable dust. A more complete description of these previous re- search studies has appeared elsewhere (Mutmansky and Lee, 1984). The behavior of particles in the human lung is known to be governed by their aerodynamic diameter, which is defined as the diameter of a hypothetical spherical particle with unit density that exhibits the same settling velocity as the given particle. Because of this fact, the aerodynamic size distribution of coal mine dust is one of the parameters to be determined along with the other physical, elemental, and mineralogical characteristics. The objective of this paper is to establish a strategy for providing coal mine respirable dust samples for characterization purposes using instruments that classify according to the aerodynamic diameter. The intensive use of computers for mineral application at Serrana's phosphate mine in Jacupiranga, State of Sao Paulo, Brazil, began in the late seventies. The early hardware and software available are described in sufficient detail to allow comparisons between that solution and the new one, based on a personal computer and a new software package - PC MINE SYSTEM from GEMCOM SERVICES INC - that provides full color graphics capabilities plus mine design and planning tools. The process needed for adaptation to the new technology' and its impact on SERRANA S.A. DE MINERACAO are described. Finally, future enhancements to the System and mine control and planning are focused.

REAM is a unique and promising method of rock breaking using high energy, inert projectiles to impart mechanical energy to the rock. This paper describes a demonstration of the application of this new technology to two specific problems in open pit mining: secondary breakage and the scaling of loose material from pit walls. Under previous government contracts, Physics International Company developed the projectile impact method for a large variety of commercial and military rock excavation tasks. A 4 meter (13 foot) diameter by 16.8 meters (55 foot) long tunnel was driven at the Hope Valley Mine in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California in 1972 and 1973. An average of 1100 kg (1 ¼ tons) of a 172 MN/m2 (25,000-psi) granodiorite formation was broken by each of 590 shots used to drive the tunnel.l Based on these results it is estimated that REAM can drive over 60 meters (200 feet) of tunnel per day at about 88 percent of the cost of drilling and blasting. In addition, repeated axial impact by high energy projectiles was used to drill a 0.4 meter (16 inch) diameter horizontal hole in the same granodiorite formation. Each shot advanced the hole an average of 0.2 meter (8 inches).

Although fluorspar is considered an industrial mineral by usage and value, its geological occurrence and the mining and milling methods employed make it more akin to the non-ferrous metal ores. Likewise methods of exploration for it are more like those used in the search for lead and zinc, with which fluorspar is often mixed. In fact, it often takes the mixture of fluorspar, lead, zinc, plus maybe barite to add up to enough recoverable values to make the mineral an ore by definition. This is so true where the fluorspar portion is low grade, perhaps less than 25 percent. Until the development of modern steel milling in World War I times, the invention of aluminum smelting, and development of the fluorine chemical industry and air conditioning, there were few uses for fluorspar aside from ceramic fluxes in the flint glass industry and for uses as glazes for pottery and china. Pure fluorite crystals have long been admired as semi-precious and ornamental minerals of many delicate colors.

The United States has long been recognized for its ability to marshall the many tools of its scientists and engineers to meet national threats or crises. Two major World Wars, the Dust Bowl, the Soviet Missile threat, Sputnik, and more recently the Energy Crisis have stimulated military weapons development, massive land reclamation and water management programs, NASA, and the Space Program, Project Independence, and soon a new agency, the Energy Research and Development Administration. While our record of successful responses to these major national concerns lends support to the expectation that we will succeed in dealing with the current energy problem and potential future crises as well, the crisis mode of response is becoming increasingly wasteful of funds and human and natural resources. This waste, while always of a concern, is a more important factor than previously because of the accelerating pace at which the world has been shrinking, relatively, in comparison to its human population and that population's increasing demand for resources, both renewable and nonrenewable. If present growth patterns continue, in the year 2000 there will be two people to feed, clothe, house, and satisfy for every one person that existed in 1970. On a finite planet, with finite land areas, limited resources, and only partial understanding of the means by which future problems can be addressed, one of the major threats to mankind will be scarcity and one of our major challenges will be better management of our resources. Hydrogeological techniques were used to solve problems of slope stability in open-pit mines of the Eufaula bauxite district, Alabama. Geologic and hydrologic data were evaluated and used to design a system of dewatering wells to enable the operators to mine bauxite more efficiently and economically. Walls of open-pit mines in the district were subsequently stabilized by the operation of the dewatering system. Three open-pit mines, each at varying stages of the mining process, of the A. P. Green Refractories Company, were used to develop a sequential series of guidelines that indicate how to effectively remove ground water from the formations surrounding the ore bodies in the district. The use of sound engineering principles in well design, in combination with the correct interpretation of the pit hydrology provided the basis for solutions of the slope- stabilization problem aided in the economical removal of bauxite from mines of the district.
