Drillability of rocks by mechanical means is closely related to the physical properties of the respective rocks, Various approaches by previous investigators on rock drillability are presented, as well as recent techniques studied by the Bureau of Mines. The studies show drillability concepts based on (1) theoretical drilling equations derived from laboratory drilling experiments extended to field drilling results and on (2) a statistical method where multiple regression analysis is used to develop a prediction equation for drillability.

We still need to innovate, but it is getting harder. The real price of metals is declining, return on shareholder value is lower than other industries, and there is a shorter-term focus on staying viable in a capital-intensive industry where timeframes for implementation of new technologies can be long (+I5 years). In this environment, the levels of R&D spent by major minerals companies are remaining steady at around 0.2%-0.5% of revenue. This is not large and to remain viable in the future, we need to be smarter about the way in which we do R&D. The mining industry is a knowledge-based industry. Driving down the cost curve demands innovation, which demands knowledge. To be smarter and more effective in our approach to innovation, a new paradigm is required Generating, capturing and using knowledge has evolved from Mode 1 (discipline based and clear distinction between basic and applied research) to Mode 2 (multidisciplinary, team-based approached with flow between basic and applied activities). Mode 2 is now seen to be much more efficient and to deliver better appropriability (Tegart 2003). To survive, we need to innovate, and the best way to do this is collaboratively. Some examples and pointers for the future will be given in this paper. THE CURRENT SITUATION The Rand report and other recent studies have painted a grim outlook for the mining industry. The real price of metals continues to decline (Figure 1) and profit margins remain thin. This is reflected in shareholder returnwhich are well below other industries (Figure 2)-and current management strategies-which reflect something of a "survival mode." Several candidate sites have been proposed for the Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL), a facility that would provide over 2000 meters of overburden to screen out cosmic rays that would otherwise interfere with experiments. Types of anticipated experiments include: detection of dark matter and stellar neutrinos, and evaluation of deep microbial life forms. Engineering experiments might include more refined scanning devices to “see” rock defects ahead of tunneling, improved predictive models for groundwater inflows and tunnel support requirements, and improved instrumentation for monitoring in-situ stresses, rock deformations, and pore water pressures. Spin-offs from this research might include more sensitive security detectors for scrutinizing shipping containers, new drugs based on new microbes, and improved sensor systems for tunneling. A site near Leavenworth, WA, was assessed and shown to have numerous topographic and geotechnical advantages. Rock cover is on the order of 2250 meters. The granitic bedrock is suitable for tunneling a variety of large underground openings.

INTRODUCTION Gwinnett County, Georgia, is a part of the rapidly expanding metropolitan Atlanta Georgia area. Located approximately 48 km (30 miles) northeast of Atlanta, Gwinnett County has a current population in excess of 600,000 and is projected to reach a population of 1,200,000 by 2025. As a part of the County’s master plan to supply drinking water for the expanding population and to increase system reliability, the Gwinnett County Public Utilities Department undertook the Shoal Creek Raw Water Intake and Pump Station Project. Figure 1 shows a vicinity map for the project. Prior to construction of the Shoal Creek Raw Water Intake and Pump Station Project the County had a single raw water intake to feed water from Lake Sidney Lanier (Lake Lanier) into a filter plant for processing into potable water. This project together with a newly constructed water filter plant provides Gwinnett County additional capacity and system redundancy to prevent interruptions to the drinking water supply. Lake Lanier is a man made reservoir with over 800 km (500 miles) of shoreline and was constructed by the Army Corps of Engineers in the 1950s for hydro electric power generation, flood control, and navigation benefits for the Chattahoochee River. Over time, Lake Lanier has become an increasingly important source of drinking water for the metropolitan Atlanta area. This paper focuses on the primary underground construction and lake tap components of the project including a 42.7 m (140 ft) deep pump station shaft 24.4 m(80 ft) in finished diameter transitioning to a 6.1 m (20 ft) finished diameter shaft, a3.05 m (10 ft) finished diameter by 19.8 m (65 ft) deep intake shaft constructed in an average of 21.3 m (70 ft) of water, and a 190.5 m (625 ft) by 3.05 m (10 ft) finished diameter modified horseshoe tunnel connecting the two shafts. This raw water intake system, in conjunction with the incorporated pump station with 8 pumps and dual1,829 mm (72 inch) pipelines, provides a system capacity of 1,091,062 m3/day(240 MGD) to two water filter plants and is expandable by the addition of pumps to1,500,210 m3/day (330 MGD). Parsons provided design and construction management services for the project. The $29.6 million contract to construct the project was awarded to W.L. Hailey &Company. Notice to proceed was given August 6, 2001 and substantial completion was achieved on January 20, 2004. Value engineering changes adopted for the project contributed to completing the project at a final cost of $28.8 million.

Everybody has an opinion what the quality of a grinding mill head casting should be, yet extremely few take the time, or get the opportunity, to compare their opinions against fitness-for-purpose data. The real question is not how flawless the casting should/could be, but rather how long will ?this? casting survive in operation. To validate an opinion on this topic one needs either extensive historical data, or comprehensive experimental data, or preferably, a combination of both. The same data can also be used to establish the conservativeness, or lack thereof, of analytical prediction methods.

Since 2008, the Portuguese Task Group for the Extension of the Continental Shelf has been operating the ROV "Luso" (rated for 6000m depth) for geological sampling of the deep North Atlantic seabed, performing surveys on, e.g., seamounts and hydrothermal vent fields. Amongst other sensors, the ROV is equipped with a full HD video camera with which still images of the deep ocean floor are recorded. Fixed on the ROV’s frame are two underwater "line" lasers, each generating a sharp green line (532nm) over the seabed. The two lasers are paralleled and calibrated at a set distance. Provided that the camera’s angle of view is known, numerical values for seabed surface area may be calculated using direct measurements taken from the pictures containing the laser lines. We present the corresponding main mathematical formulas, which are derived from simple geometrical considerations, and discuss how to generalize these results for an arbitrary camera tilt or pan. We present an example of application of our method by estimating values for percent coverage of rock substrate versus sediment. Our results are also relevant for determining seabed polymetallic nodule abundances from still images obtained during ROV surveys.

The Rock Mass Rating (RMR) system is an internationally recognized classification system that can be used for preliminary ground control design. The RMR system assigns quantifiable values to predefined classified parameters of a rock mass. Assigning a single value rather than a range to each parameter is a source of uncertainty, however, assigning a single value can be useful for further studies related to RMR ratings. Fuzzy systems are being used in an increasing number of application areas where linguistic rules are used to describe the system. In past decades, fuzzy systems have been successfully used in geotechnical and mining engineering problems to cope with uncertain data as well as with vagueness. In such scenarios, linguistic rules and rating-based classification of rock masses have always been questionable. The objective of this study is to apply fuzzy set theory to the RMR classification system. The fuzzy system proposed in this study is specified for weak and very weak rock masses (RMR<50) based on data collected from Nevada gold mines where 68% of RMR data is in the ?poor? and ?very poor? classes. In this approach, a Mamdani fuzzy algorithm has been constructed to evaluate basic RMR89 rating for the ?wet condition.? Comparison between basic RMR89 and fuzzy RMR shows the fuzzy RMR system is valid to predict RMR from the discrete rating of each input parameter.

The proportion of underground coal production as a percentage of overall Australian production has fallen in the last 10 years, with underground production remaining more or less static at about 53 Mt (58 million st). However, underground coal mining remains a viable industry in Australia, due to use of modern longwall mining systems. In 1993-1994, 26 longwalls were in operation, with total production exceeding 39 Mt/a (43 million stpy). Some of these longwalls achieve productivity levels approaching efficient opencut operations, and in some cases, they exceed them. These high-production longwall mines are not without problems when depth and distances from outcrop increase and the gas content of the seams approaches or exceeds critical limits. When gas content of a coal seam exceeds 6 m3/t (233 cu ft/st), gas flows into the mine may be sufficient to interrupt production from time to time.

On Nov 1, 2007 House Resolution 2262 ? The Hardrock Mining and Reclamation Act of 2007 ? was passed by the U.S. House by a vote of 244-166. HR-2262, among other things, would impose a 4-per-cent royalty on existing mines with commercial production and an 8-percent gross royalty on all new claims. Not surprisingly, this possible new law was one of the hottest topics of discussion at the Northwest Mining Association?s conference that this year returned to Spokane, WA for its 113th annual meeting on Dec. 3-7. More than 1,800 delegates attended the conference that was held under the banner theme of ?Mining ?. For today and tomorrow.? Northwest Mining Association executive director Laura Skaer was one of many speakers during the three-day conference to respond to the threat to the industry posed by HR-2262 with a presentation titled ?Potential changes to the 1872 Mining Law.? In the presentation that she first unveiled at the Alaska Miners Association?s convention and trade show on Nov. 8, Skaer laid out a comprehensive list of problems with HR-2262. In addition to the association?s obvious concerns about the proposed royalty, Skaer noted that the bill includes a mine veto provision that would allow the Secretary of the Interior the authority to deny an operations permit to a project if the secretary determines that the operation would cause undue degradation to public lands and resources. Potential massive withdrawals from mineral entry are also included in HR-2262. Among the lands that could be off limits to miners under HR-2262 are wilderness study areas, areas of environmental concern and 23.6 hm2 (58.5 million acres) identified as Roadless Rule. States, political subdivisions and Indian Tribes would also have more authority to withdraw lands, she said. To combat the proposed changes, Skaer made 10 trips to Washington D.C. on behalf of NWMA members in 2007. In her presentation at the annual meeting, she also objected to provisions that include no life-of-mine permits and uncertain permit renewals and new and duplicative environmental standards that she said are vague, ambiguous and inconsistent with current federal and state environmental laws. Debra W. Struhsacker, an environmental permitting and government relations consultant, also spoke on the issue of HR-2262 with a presentation titled ?The House mining law bill ? Rip van Winkle is back ? and he?s meaner than ever.?

Membrane technology has been available for over 36 years, but has been used sparingly in the general mining industry. However, recent developments in polymer chemistry, spiral wound element construction, pretreatment equipment and techniques and an expanded understanding of membrane fouling and cleaning techniques have dramatically improved the reliability and robustness of membrane based systems in the mining industry. Harrison Western has expanded the use of this “new” technology to enhance the use of membrane technologies to separate metals from large volume heap leach mining solutions containing copper, zinc, and iron, gold or silver. Moreover, membrane technologies are ideally suited to fractionations that add value to processing fluids from refineries like separating metals from acids or concentrating acids and producing high quality process fluids. Finally, wastewater from Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) or, as in the case of the Newmont Yanacocha Mine in Peru, the treatment of excess barren leach solution created during the rainy season, can be cost effectively processed to meet World Bank Standards for surface discharge. Polymeric membranes, specifically thin-film composites, have been developed that will purify, fractionate or concentrate gold, silver, copper, zinc or nickel. Recent applications have been developed for spiral wound modules that operate across the pH spectrum from 0 to 14. Systems using membranes have been constructed that operate on feed streams from 140° C to 300 centipoise. Opportunities exist to apply membrane technology to concentrate gold, silver, copper, zinc or nickel using thin film composite membranes. Engineered membrane types can operate across the spectrum from low pH (<2) acid applications to high pH > 10 cyanide applications. Incorporating HW EMS™ membrane technologies into current mining operations could allow one to increase production because the membrane technology would be used to pre-concentrate heap leach solutions, and therefore, increase utilization of existing extraction and refinery capabilities.

Spiral separators are commonly used to upgrade sand-sized particles in both the coal and mineral processing industries. Many plants utilize multiple stages of cleaning and/or scavenging spirals to improve recovery and/or final product grade. Field studies suggest, however, that the layout of industrial spiral circuits is often less than optimal. This oversight can usually be attributed to a failure by plant designers to consider fundamental process engineering rules that govern the layout of complex separation circuits. This article reviews some of these important rules as specifically applied to multistage spiral circuit design. Two industrial case studies, one involving the upgrading of heavy mineral sands and a second involving the cleaning of fine coal, are presented to illustrate the impact of good design protocols on spiral circuit performance.

The industrial vision system provides on-line 2D particle size analysis for aggregate slurries in both the overflow and underflow of hydrocyclones. This paper covers required vision system features allowing CCD cameras to function in the harsh environment of a mine milling area. The study conducted demonstrates the system’s capacity to obtain particle size distributions for controlling hydrocyclonic separators. The particle size distribution is obtained within seconds and immediately updated to allow for process adjustments. Results are then provided as a graphical computer generated display or output as a 4-20mA current loop for process control. The primary use of the vision system is in classifying particles in cyclone overflows which are often a few microns in size. Typical size information for actual mine slurry samples are presented and possible control schemes discussed.

A special type of shotcrete is used to improve the performance of open-type TBM in difficult situations. The Hakamagoshi and Johana tunnels are expressway evacuation tunnels of 3.2 km and 5.1 km in length, respectively (total 9.1 km) that were excavated by one open-type TBM. The geological conditions at the sites were estimated to be good before excavation. However, 95% of the rock turned out to be two ranking orders worse than the estimated classes. Therefore, we used a special shotcrete for bad rock conditions, and succeeded in excavating the tunnel at an average rate of 270 m/month.

There are many different machine setup parameters and variables that affect the production of cone crushers in a mineral processing plant. One of these variables is the eccentric speed at which the cone gyrates. In June 2012, pilot tests were conducted on a 200 hp high speed cone crusher to determine the production and operating conditions over a wide spectrum of eccentric speed. Every plant will have variations in the ore characteristics and feed rates throughout the life of the mine, and at times throughout a single shift of operation, which result in non-optimal use of the crushing energy and inconsistent process control. For high speed cone crushers, the crusher will exhibit a different capacity, power required, and discharge size distribution as the speed ranges over the design limits of the machine. This study documents the measured variation in production and energy efficiency both when the crusher was ran at full capacity as well as when the feed to the crusher was not sufficient to run at full capacity. Overall, the results match theory and the capacity and power fluctuated by 25% and 17%, respectively, over the speed range when operated full while there was an overall trend of slightly coarser discharge size distribution as the speed decreased. The results with the fixed feed rate were more telling, as the crushers had 4-14% higher production when making a theoretical minus 12.5 mm product when operating at the optimal speed as compared to the worst speed in the ?typical? speed range for this application. Secondary analysis of the fixed tonnage testing also showed that the power draw was more consistent with lower magnitude spikes at the higher speeds (higher cavity level), as on average the standard deviation of the power draw increased from 7% to 18% and the peak power spikes from 20% to 48% over the speed range tested. The findings lay groundwork for more efficient plant design. Varying the speed of the crusher can be used to tune the crusher speed during commissioning, adapt to changing ore conditions over long periods of time, or be used as a dynamic input into an advanced control system. Each action above would serve to make the crusher(s) more productive and more energy efficient, and would also have mechanical benefits for the machine. "The mission of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Minerals Information Center (NMIC) is to collect, analyze and disseminate information on the domestic and international supply of and demand for minerals and mineral materials essential to the U.S. economy and national security. Understanding mineral exploration activities and trends assists government policy makers, minerals industry decision makers and research entities in identifying where future sources of mineral supply are likely to be discovered, the amount and type of these resources and factors that may affect exploration and development.This review summarizes significant exploration trends related to active sites and budgets, mineral commodities and regional factors for the years 2001-2015. Data were compiled by specialists in the USGS-NMIC, and reported annually in the USGS-NMIC Minerals Yearbook series and in the May issue of Mining Engineering magazine. External data for these analyses were derived from industry sources, published literature, and SNL Metals & Mining, an offering of S&P Global Market Intelligence (New York, NY).The USGS-NMIC compiled exploration site data for more than 80 mineral commodities, focusing on base metals, diamond and precious metals. More than $138 billion constant U.S. dollars were budgeted by the minerals industry from 2001 through 2015 to explore more than 16,000 mineral deposits globally (SNL Metals & Mining, 2016a). Annual analyses identified where mineral exploration took place by principal commodity target, ranked the magnitude of activity in each region, identified the factors that most affected changes in exploration activity and highlighted developments that led to changes in global supply or increased diversity of supply to the United States. Geographic classifications noted in this report were Africa, Australia, Canada, China, Latin America, Pacific, Russia, United States and Rest of the World."

The 4th bore of the Caldecott Tunnel is a 50-ft horseshoe shaped highway tunnel located in the hills east of Oakland, California. Tunnel excavation was mostly completed using one of the world?s largest commercially available roadheaders, a Wirth T3.20. The geologic profile included seven different geologic units, which displayed a range of different behavior with regard to excavation and initial support. Following a brief introduction to the excavation and support methods, this paper will discuss roadheader performance in the various geologic units encountered during excavation. Comments will also be made concerning the relationship between the roadheader method of excavation and observed ground convergence during excavation.

As most mining companies are taking advantage of the high market prices for base metals such as steel, copper and zinc, numerous challenges still face them. While demand is strong from countries like China and the United States, demand is still mixed in Europe. This leads to the question of how long these high prices and overall high global demand will last. The tremendous market prices of most precious and base metals have enabled many companies to pay down a significant amount of debt accrued during acquisition and capital expenditure phases. Additionally, mining companies have been able to internally fund and engage in large projects to address future growth, (Less, 2006), thus maximizing the performance of the existing asset base, driving maintenance costs down, and improving and empowering the work-force (Mining Journal, 2006). Market prices and general efficiency gains have addressed these issues to some extent. However, critical issues still face operating managers in the mineral pro-cessing side of the industry. Energy prices, for example, continue to have a negative impact on cash costs for producing an ounce of gold or ton of a given base metal (Cummins, 2003).

The Detroit Upper Rouge Tunnel CSO Control Project will capture and store up to 201 MG of combined sewer overflow from 28 outfalls in Detroit, Dearborn Heights and Redford Township during wet-weather events. The history of rock tunneling in the area is associated with high groundwater inflows, artesian pressure, and hazardous and combustible gases. This paper presents the geotechnical considerations for designing the 11.28-km (7-mile) long, 9.14 m (30-ft) finished diameter tunnel and its associated adits, chambers and shafts, including the discussions of geotechnical investigations, rock mass characterization, estimated groundwater infiltration during construction, and the selections of excavation methods and lining system based on anticipated ground behavior to be encountered.

Sensor derived data can add value across the mining operating chain ranging from resource definition, extraction, pre ? concentration, mineral process monitoring and assessment of product quality. Most documented studies on the use of sensors in mining focus on specific technologies for specific applications. These studies do not take into account different aims, objectives and operating conditions at different steps in the value chain. The first part of this contribution assesses key physical performance and discriminatory requirements of sensors applied in each portion of the mining value chain. The second part proposes a framework of methods for quantifying the value added by additional sensor information. Integrating the sensor based technology and the economic value quantification allows for both, designing an economically optimal sensor monitoring network along the whole mining value chain and optimizing efficiencies. Illustrative studies demonstrate the significant economic benefits, in particular in reduction of exploration expenditures, increase in extraction efficiencies, increase in ore product quality and improvement of processing efficiencies.

Introduction An integrated oil company has two options in approaching strategic planning. It has to decide whether it is in business for the long-term. I state this in all seriousness. Those who help manage public companies have the responsibility of good stewardship of other people&apos;s money. We must decide whether continued investment in our basic business will generate a reasonable rate of return. With a world surplus of petroleum production capacity, and continuing downward pressure on prices, this question should be addressed by all oil companies. And a positive answer is not necessarily a foregone conclusion in all cases. The decision should be made based on proven competence in finding and developing petroleum reserves on a cost-competitive basis with other producers, and on a frank analysis of future prospects. This should include a realistic assessment of the projected rate of return on specific investment projects. If a company did not pass these tests, its strategy could take one of four paths. Diversification First, it could diversify. But recent history suggests that oil companies are not good at managing other businesses. Second, it could seek a buyer for its business at the optimum return for its owners. Third, it could sell its assets on a piecemeal basis. And, fourth, it could adopt a longer-range plan of self-liquidation by living off current recoverable reserves. In other words, by not investing in exploration and development, it could maximize short-term profit and pass the money back to shareholders in the form of dividends. The Conoco component of DuPont has a below-average cost of finding petroleum, a good track record of efficient production, and a full plate of projects that pass the test of return-on-investment. In short, Conoco is in business for the long-term. That fact, in itself, determines at least one key element in strategy. This is to extend the life of the petroleum reserve base while at the same time maintaining maximum efficient rates of production to provide a strong cash flow. A company that is able to maintain a strong reserve base will ultimately see the value of those reserves escalate as world oil supplies tighten. Our planners expect this tightening to occur within the next decade as demand grows and production in non-OPEC areas of the world begins to decline. An exploration program tailored to meet the requirements of reserve replacement and current production should have two basic parts.
