The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has recognized that Noise-Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) is the most common occupational illness in the United States. The use of heavy equipment, the drilling of rock, and the confined work environment are some of the factors that contribute to high levels of noise exposure to workers in the mining industry. Every day 80% of the nation’s miners go to work in an environment where the time weighted average (TWA) exceeds 85 dBA. Moreover, 25% of the miners are exposed to a TWA noise level that exceeds 90 dBA, the Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL). Furthermore, a NIOSH analysis of a large sample of audiograms showed that at age 50 approximately 90% of coal miners and 49% of metal/non-metal miners have a hearing impairment. By contrast, only 10% of the non-occupational-noise exposed population has a hearing impairment at age 50 (Franks, 1997) (Stephenson, 1998). Simply stated, the majority of miners have a hearing loss by the time they retire. While NIHL is the most common occupational disease in this country, this problem is especially acute among workers in the mining industry. There are several barriers to reducing NIHL in the mining industry. These include: gaps in knowledge of noise dose/source relationships, the unavailability of effective noise controls, and needs for worker education and worker empowerment. A related issue is the difficulty of communication in noisy workplaces by both hearing impaired and normal hearing workers. The Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) at NIOSH has strategically developed a hearing loss prevention program for overcoming these respective barriers in an attempt to reduce NIHL in the mining industry. This paper provides an overview of the research program being conducted at the PRL.

1. Introduction This document represents Part II of our final report on the development of a "Remote Sealing System for Extinguishing Coal Mine Fires. " It is a technical report which summarizes the results of system development and field demonstration. Part I of this two - part final report is an Operator's Manual for the application of the Remote Sealing System to a coal mine fire. 1.1 Background When coal mine fires go out of control and can no longer be fought directly, the standard fire fighting technique is to construct air-tight seals in the mine passages leading to the fire area so'--,that the oxygen supply to the fire is". cut off. Ultimately, it is desirable to isolate the fire zone in such a way that normal operations can resume in the remainder of the mine. The construction of seals in the- mine causes the atmosphere to pass through a toxic and explosive phase. Explosions, if they occur, are not only hazardous to the men working at the sealing operation, but can also undo much of the sealing work which has already been accomplished. Sealing of passageways surrounding the fire zone from within the mine is extremely difficult and dangerous. Methods for direct sealing are detailed in "Control of Mine Fires'. 1 An alternative to this approach is the technique of remote sealing. This involves drilling boreholes which intersect the mine passages at the locations where the desired seals are to be constructed. The seals are then constructed by pouring material down the borehole and filling a segment of the passage from bottom to top. During this operation, there are no personnel in the mine, all operations taking place on the ground surface.

Problem: It is estimated that 5 to 10 arc flash explosions occur in electric equipment every day in the United States. In the mining industry the largest single injury category of electrical injuries are caused by non-contact electrical arcs. Method: This investigation progressed in two phases: (a) 836 Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) reports of electric arcing incidents that occurred over a period of 11 years were reviewed, and (b) personal interviews were conducted with 32 individuals. A theoretical Safe Job Performance Model guided the study. Results: Behavioral dimensions were identified and included the effect of worker experience, judgment and decision-making ability, behavioral and organizational controls, and safety culture. Summary: The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted an investigation of behavioral components associated with arc flash incidents and developed recommendations for interventions based on findings. Impact on Industry: This study fills a vacuum in electrical training with a focus on the organizational and behavioral aspects of arc flash incidents. There search is cross-cutting in its scope, in that the results apply not only to mining and construction, but many other industries employing electricians. Although the majority of mine electrical injuries are the results of burns from electrical arcs, few miners are aware that such a hazard exists. A safety training program, which includes a video and an instructor's discussion guide, was developed for electricians based on this study's findings. “Arc Flash Awareness” was released in 2007 (DHHS NIOSH PublicationNo.2007-116D) and is available through1-800 CDC-INFO. Investigation into the expressions of the field produced by a loop over a conducting half space or in an infinite conducting half space are well documented. Reasonably complex descriptions of the effects of stratification also are reported. However, a model which must contain all of these complexities because of transmission to depths of 15,000 feet and also include the pertibation of the field by a verticle cylindrical steel casing loses its facility in the field or for quick, accurate approximation to field magnitudes and phase. This paper describes the results of two field tests to determine the attenuation and phase versus depth and frequency of an electromagnetic wave (induction field). A simple two-layer model is postulated to predict the magnitude and phase of the induced field which does not require sophisticated computing tools. Correlation of the model with experimental results show agreement of most amplitude measurements to within 3 db and most phase measurements to within five degrees. The tests were conducted in a 7400 foot deep well in Nevada and an 11,000 foot deep well in Wyoming which had conductivities ranging from .0025 mhos/m to .25 mhos/m. The surface transmitting dipole had an area of ~ 10 6 feet squared and constant frequency signals of 1.5 Hz to 20 Hz were transmitted through the earth utilizing less than 65 watts of power. Model Description The magnetic field intensity components generated by a magnetic dipole immersed in an infinite homogeneous medium can be expressed in spherical coordinates as: [ ] where N, I, and (p a ) are the transmitting antenna turns, current, and effective area, respectively, and r is the range from the loops circumference to the measurement point. One of the refining processes to which lubricating oils are frequently subjected effects a reduction in content of paraffin wax. The actual treatment usually involves chilling and filter pressing; the most important result accomplished from a commercial point of view is lowering of the ""cold test"" of the oil. The Bureau of Mines has recently had occasion to ascertain the effect of changes in paraffin wax content upon the viscosity of oil and has conducted a series of experiments described in the present report.Object of the present investigation:The Bureau of Mines has devised and is using a method for the analysis of crude petroleum* which includes determination of the viscosities of lubricating oil distillates. The Bureau method does not provide for preliminary removal of paraffin wax, and it has seemed advisable to determine whether this omission causes any important variation from the results that would be obtained through commercial refinery processing. It was also thought that the present tests, though limited in scope, might be of some practical value in indicating the general effect of paraffin content upon one of the most important properties of lubricating oil.Experimental procedureA five-gallon sample of Pennsylvania crude petroleum was distilled at atmospheric pressure until 50 per cent of the charge had been vaporized. Two liters of the residuum was distilled at a reduced pressure of 40 mm. (absolute) and cuts were separated that came over between the temperature limits of 250° to 275° C. (462° to 527° F.) and 275° to 300° C. (527° to 572° F.). The viscosities of these fractions were determined and they were subsequently subjected to treatment that removed successive percentages of paraffin wax. Viscosity temperature curves were determined for the oil obtained after each removal of wax.

Provide a means for continuous measurement and display of respirable dust concentrations in a mine so that when high dust levels occur, timely, corrective measures can be taken. Approach Develop a personal dust monitor that (1) is small and light enough to be worn by a miner, (2) has the capability to continuously measure the respirable fraction of coal dust, (3) will display the respirable dust concentration in mg/m3, and (4) can store the average respirable dust concentration and sampling time of several sampling shifts for later play-back. How It Works The personal dust monitor (PDM-1) uses light scattering and convection air currents to sample the respirable fraction of coal dust. Convective air currents cause dust laden air to pass through an open-celled sampling chamber (light sensing chamber). A near infrared light emitting diode (LED) located in the PDM-1 emits pulses of light. The pulsed light passes through a focusing lens and glass window into the sampling chamber. The light is then reflected, scattered, and refracted by the airborne dust particles. Light scattered within the angles of 450 to 900 (the angles within which the intensity of the scattered light is most closely related to respirable-size dust particles) passes through another window and is focused on a light detector. The light detector signal is amplified and presented as analog output voltage for conventional recording. This signal is also converted to a digital signal which the microprocessor uses with its crystal clock to calculate the 10-second average dust concentration, the shift average concentration, the time-weighted average concentration, and the elapsed sampling time. The microprocessor also stores dust concentrations of the seven most recent sampling periods, controls the operation of the LED and detector, and operates the liquid crystal display (LCD).

"SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS1. The investigation shows that the most important beds in Allegany County, from the standpoint of known recoverable reserves are: Lower Bakerstown, Upper Freeport, Upper Bakerstown, Upper Kittraing - less important beds are: Sewickley, Waynesburg, Pittsburgh, and Barton. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves in all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and 1,800 tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated to be 556 million short tons, as of January 1, 1951. Of this total, 304 million short tons is in beds 23 inches and more thick. Areas in each bed were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager to permit making an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total eat ted reserves.3. Recoverable reserves of coal have been estimated in beds 28 inches and more thick. This thickness is about the minimum now being mined by hand-loading onto conveyors in the Appalachian region. The weighted average recovery for all beds in Allegany County, as determined by this investigation, is 49.8 percent. This percentage is based on the total thickness of coal (less partings 3/8 inch or more thick) in the bed rather than on the thickness of the coal mined. Based on the weighted average percent recovery for all beds in Allegany County, the recoverable reserves are estimated to be 152 million short tons as of January 1, 1951.4. The Allegany County coals are low-volatile bituminous in rank.5. The Allegany County coals are strongly coking."

"INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARYThis paper is one of a series recently undertaken by the Mining Branch, Bureau of Mines, College Park, Md., to describe current practice in hauling ore and waste by truck at various mines.Heavy-duty ore trucks are replacing railroads at many large open-cut mines and even at a few underground mines. Recently a few mines have been equipped with trucks for transporting ore to a central point, from which conveyor belts move the ore out of the mine. This paper deals only with truck haulage methods and costs.The requirements for efficient low-cost truck haulage are good trucks designed for heavy loads, adequate truck maintenance, smooth roads, and well-trained truck drivers.A correct balance must be maintained between the primary crusher capacity, the number of shovels loading ore, and the number of trucks hauling ore.The cost of tires is important. Tire companies are manufacturing better tires. Mining companies are prolonging the life of tires by building better roads and maintaining correct tire pressure.The trend is toward heavier equipment. In 1949 it cost $0.0925 a long ton to haul ore and waste with a 15-ton truck and $0.0743 a long ton with a 22-ton truck.When trucks are properly maintained, hauling costs do not increase with the age of the trucks. During 1948 it cost $0.1118 per long ton to haul with the four oldest 15-ton trucks and $0.1130 per long ton to haul with the four newest 15-ton trucks, two of which were purchased in 1945 and two in 1947.The weighted ayerage cost of hauling a long ton of ore to the crusher and waste to the dump has been reduced from $0.1159 in 1948 to $0.087 in 1949."

"Initiated as a part of the Bureau of Mines program for development of strategic minerals for national defense, various mines in the Poughkeepsie Gulch and Mineral Point mining districts were examined by C. R. Wilfley, W. R. Hamilton, .and N. E. Wvvlwy, Jr., Bureau Of 'Mines engineers, in July and August 1943, July 1944, and September 1945. In a subsequent report a proposal was made to evaluate this isolated area 'of some 15 square miles located in Ouray and San Juan Counties, Colo.Reconnaissance work in the area was begun in June 1946. Mapping and sampling were begun in July and was completed in Pougkeepsie Gulch and extended westward to include the Hendrick Gulch area of the east side of Ironton Park. Project work was recessed for the winter on October 15, 1946 after approximately 6 square miles of the Poughkeepsie Gulch,district been mapped and 801 samples had been taken.In this report the physical features, climate, and ore deposits districts are described, and a brief history of mining and production lead, zinc; and silver is given.The individual mines and prospects in, the area are described in detail.A list of patented claims and ownerships is given in appendix I, and analyses of samples are tabulated in appendix II.The San Juan preliminary project was directed by Paul T. Allsman, chief, Salt Lake City Branch, Mining Division and was supervised by William M. Traver, Jr., supervising engineer, Colorado Field. Office.Chemical analyses were made by the Salt Lake City laboratory under the direction of H.E. Peterson, chemist, and S. R. Zimmerley, chief, Salt Lake City Branch, Metallurgical Division.Harold A. Airborne dust generation is one of the byproducts of coal mining, processing, and handling. The amount of airborne total dust (ATD, respirable size and larger) and airborne respirable dust (ARD) generated is of primary interest for designing the level of engineering controls needed for adequate dust abatement. Laboratory crushing experiments were conducted in a wind tunnel with a roll crusher to identify relationships among crushing parameters, product size, coal rank properties, and airborne dust generation. Through the first series of experiments, the effect of primary and secondary breakage processes on both product size and airborne dust generation was examined. Through a second series of experiments, the effect of coal rank properties on product size and airborne dust generation was studied using a uniform crushing process with secondary breakage. Laboratory results indicate that secondary breakage of a particular coal notably increases the specific amount of ATD generated, while negligibly impacting the specific amount of ARD generated. A strong positive relationship was identified between the specific amounts of ATD and ARD generated during the primary breakage process (with minimal secondary breakage), but a negligible relationship was observed between the same two variables when secondary breakage was introduced into the crushing process. This indicates that most of the ATD and ARD is generated from the primary breakage, while secondary breakage has a more of an influence on generating additional amounts of larger sized ATD. Additional experiments involving the uniform crushing of eight different bituminous coals showed that the coal rank, expressed as the inherent moist fuel ratio (MFR = fixed carbon =(volatile x inherent moisture)), had diverse relationships between the product size created and the amount of airborne dust generated. As bituminous coal rank or MFR increased, the amount of coal product fines < 250 gm increased while the mass percentage of ATD and ARD liberated from these < 250 µm product fines decreased. Air dry loss (ADL) moisture in the coal was found to be inversely related to the dust cloud electrostatic field, influencing dust liberation from the coal product fines. Since the MFR was directly related to the dust cloud electrostatic field, opposite the ADL-electrostatic field relationship, the diverse relationships between the product size created and the amount of dust liberated from the < 250 µm product fines were explained. Finally, 12 to 14 times more ATD was generated as compared to the ARD generated during these experiments. These results should provide a fundamental basis for initial estimation of the airborne dust loading requirements of engineering control methods for coal crushing.

The research reported here was part of the effort to evaluate the safety of a process to recover TNT from MK-9 depth bombs by the autoclave melt out process. In this process the depth bombs are heated to 121°C so that the TNT will melt and run into a vat. Unfortunately, asphalt lining the inside surface of the bomb also melts and flows out with the TNT. It is not known what effect the asphalt contamination and the higher than normal process temperatures (12°C) would have on the sensitivity of the TNT. Testing was conducted on molten TNT and molten TNT contaminated with 2 pct asphalt at 90, 100, 110, 120, 125, and 130°C. In the liquid drop test apparatus with a 2 kg weight, the molten TNT yielded a 50 pct probability of initiation at a drop height of 6.5 cm at 110°C,decreasing to 4.5 cm at 130°C. Asphalt-contaminated TNT was somewhat less impact sensitive than pure TNT at temperatures of 110 to 125°C, but became more sensitive at 130°C; 50 pct probability of initiation at a drop height of 7.8 cm at 110°C, decreasing to 3.3cm at 130°C. In the card gap test, the molten TNT detonated at high velocity for a gap of 0.25 inches at 90 to 125°C and detonated at high velocity for a gap of 0.5 inches at 130°C. For gaps of 0.5 to 3 inches at 90 to 125°C and 0.75 inches to 3 inches at 130°C, the TNT did not detonate at high velocity but produced a violent explosion that caused significant damage to the test fixture. For gaps of 4 inches the TNT did not react. In the gap test there was no significant difference between the pure and asphalt-contaminated TNT. The thermal analysis test results showed that when asphalt is present in TNT, it greatly accelerates the exothermic decomposition of TNT, starting at temperatures near 200°C. The research demonstrated that asphalt-contamination of recovered TNT does not appear to have a significant effect on TNT shock sensitivity, but does adversely affect impact and thermal sensitivity. The results also showed that molten TNT seems to be more shock sensitive than previously suspected. It appears that at relatively low shock stimulus levels, the molten TNT may be undergoing a low velocity detonation, wherein the shock wave traveling through the gap test pipe cavitates the molten TNT, greatly increasing its sensitivity.

This paper, prepared under the direct supervision of Paul T. Alisman, chief, Salt Lake City Division, Mining Branch, and under the general supervision of Lowell B. Moon, chief, Mining Branch, reports upon ore such technique.The Wright borehole-surveying instrument developed at the Homestake mine, Lead, S. Dak., has been described in several publications. 3/ For the benefit of those to whom the publications are not available, the instrument is described here. However, this article will be concerned mainly with the technique developed by the Federal Bureau of Mines for using the instrument.In the use of the Wright borehole-surveying instrument, it was found advantageous to develop a standard practice of operation covering type of film, preparation and care of film, loading film in instrument, placing instrument in container, exposure time, unloading film from instrument, development of film, and determination of dip and strike from film impressions."

The effects of certain process variables on the grain size, grain type, and microhardness of vapor-deposited tungsten were established, and the near-optimum parameters and the efficacy for the vapor deposition process were determined. No significant change in the grain size or microstructure resulted from ultrasonic vibration of the substrate during deposition, from variations in the hydrogen (H2) to tungsten hexafluoride (WF6) ratio, or from small increases in reaction-chamber pressure. Near-optimum conditions were continuous deposition at atmospheric pressure, a deposition rate of 2-mils thickness/square inch of substrate area/hour, a temperature of 5500 C, and a hydrogen to WF6 ratio of 4:1. The addition, individually, of about 2 volume-percent of butane, 24 volume-percent of carbon dioxide, or 4 volume-percent of propane to the hydrogen and WF6 mixture produced deposits with the finest grain size for each gas. A corresponding increase in microhardness accompanied the decrease in grain size. The addition of gases did not alter the columnar microstructure found in vapor-deposited tungsten.

The Bureau of Mines has collected field data and made laboratory investigations of trailing- cable performance in the hope of developing a better and safer cable for use with permissible mining machines . Because of their better insulation and performance , only rubber- sheathed cables were finally considered . The cables tested represented the product of six manufacturers . : After consideration of the results of the preliminary investigations , the conditions under which cables are used in mines , and the better performance of the later types of cables that were submitted as the investigation progressed , the bureau formulated a performance - test requirement and notified the cable manufacturers as follows : The hazards of the trailing cable are such that the bureau has been unable to extend beyond the machine its formal approval to cover the cable as at present developed . However , in the attempt to reduce the hazard as much as possible , cables passing certain tests will be recommended for this service and it is hoped that several cables will be developed to meet this requirement .

Many western ores containing ;old, silver, and copper can be mined and concentrated at a profit only when the recovery of those metals is high and treatment costs are low. Usually, ores containing easily dissolved copper minerals, or copper minerals that become soluble to some extent through oxidation during treatment, present a real problem in cyanidation. Copper cyanide compounds are formed that tend to &apos;precipitate and that cannot yield regenerated cyanide and metallic copper on contact with zinc. This results not only in some loss of copper through solution in cyanide, but in excessive consumption of cyanide above the amount required for the extraction of Gold and silver. Any moans, therefore, of minimizing the: loss of cyanide while at the same time effecting high recoveries of the several values contained in the ore is of wide interest. A sample of typical low-grade ore of gold, silver, and copper, containing copper-sulfide minerals, was obtained from the MacLaren Gold Mines Co., Cooke, Park County, Mont., for laboratory investigation by flotation and cyanidation.

In 1981, U.S. Bureau of Mines personnel conducted a survey of claims and prospects in the Wheeler Ridge RARE II area to determine if mineral resources or potential for resources exists at deposits in the area. Results of Bureau of Mines investigations indicate the area contains no identified mineral deposits. However, the geologic setting at the Round Valley Peak Prospect near the center of the study area is considered to be favorable for the discovery of tungsten resources with associated molybdenum and copper. Tungsten deposits, should they be present, would be expected to occur at depth in tactite at or near the calcareous rock-granite intrusive contact. Sand, gravel, and stone deposits in the area are not considered to be resources because equal or better quality material is available closer to major markets. INTRODUCTION The 16,200-acre (6,560 ha) Wheeler Ridge study area is 11 mi (18 km) northwest of Bishop, California, on the eastern flank of the Sierra Nevada range. The John Muir Wilderness adjoins the study area&apos;s western boundary (fig. 1).

In turn, when the suggestions arrive the manufacturer makes the required changes and maintains close collaboration with the operator. Thus the history of our machines of today is written.Laboratory concentration tables are exceptions to growth by experiment and collaboration. Their operation never enters directly into the cost sheet; they are seldom used for longer periods than 10 minutes; and the experimenter, while hurrying to another job, accepts the table, good or bad, for a quick test on his ore. Thus we go back about 50 years when we use the preset in factory-built laboratory table.The Southern Experiment Station, Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the University of Alabama, recognized the existence of a tabling problem net usually considered. That is, instead of using the table to test the ore, the ore was used to test the table. In this critical examination of laboratory table six defects were encountered (and remedied). They are:"

The flammability of trichloroethylene vapors in air has been determined in a 7-inch cyclindrical vessel. Saturated flammable mixtures were formed with air at atmospheric pressure between 30° C (86° F) and 82° C (180° F); the trichloroethylene concentrations at these temperatures are 12.5 (lower) and 90 (upper) volume-percent, respectively. Further study is necessary to assess the effects of different variables on the flammability of this material. INTRODUCTION Trichloroethylene (TCE) (ClHC = CCl2), sold under various trade names (Blacosolv, Perm-A-Clor, Tri, Triad, Triclene, Trivec, Tromex, Vapoclean, Vapoclor, Westrosol, etc.), is an important industrial chemical. A summary of its physical and chemical properties is given in table 1. It is used to degrease metals, leather, and textiles, to extract residual oils from vegetable oil cakes, for dry cleaning, and in soap. It is a powerful solvent for fats, resins, bitumens, rubber, sulfur, and phosphorus. Several explosions in which trichloroethylene was involved prompted an investigation by the Bureau of Mines to determine the conditions under which such accidents can occur.
