Twelve subjects participated in an investigation of the biomechanical stresses of asymmetric lifting in stooped and kneeling postures. Three factors were manipulated in this study: Posture (stooped or kneeling), height of lift (35 or 70 cm), and weight of lift (15, 20, or 25 kg). Subjects were required to lift or lower a box every 10 seconds for a period of 2 minutes. Electromyography (PIG) of eight trunk muscles was collected during a lift in this period. The PIG data, normalized to maximum extension and flexion exertions in each posture, were input to a biomechanical model and used to predict compression and shear forces at the L, level of the lumbar spine. Results from the EMG-driven biomechanical model indicated that compression was greater when lifting to a higher shelf (p < 0.001), and indicated a significant interaction between posture and the weight of the lifting box (p < 0.01). Peak lateral shear was not significantly affected by any main effects or interactions (p < 0.05). Anterior shear was increased with increasing height of lift (p < 0.001), and also by the posture x weight interaction (p c 0.01). A multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) indicated a complex relationship for recruitment of the eight trunk muscles, with the triple interaction being significant (p < 0.001). The results of this investigation will be used to evaluate safe loads for lifting in these restricted postures.

A National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s (NIOSH) mine fire detection re-search project was undertaken to evaluate multiple mine fire sensor types for nuisance alarm discrimination. The response of multiple fire sensor types to three small coal fire and three small conveyor belt fires in the presence of diesel emissions was evaluated in NIOSH’s Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) Safety Re-search Coal Mine (SRCM). An array of fire sensors which included an optical and ionization smoke sensor, a chemical cell CO sensor, and Metal Oxide Semiconductor (MOS) sensors, was used to sample the diesel engine and fire source emissions. The mine fire detection experiments demonstrated the ability of a MOS sensor with a bimodal response to NOx and products-of-combustion (POC) to respond to the onset of smoldering combustion in the presence of CO and POC particulates from a diesel locomotive. As part of an in-mine evaluation in an operating coal mine, the MOS NOx responsive sensor and an ionization smoke sensor was demonstrated as a method to discriminate diesel emissions and cross-interference of H2 on a CO chemical cell fire sensor at a battery charging station. The reinforcement of mine fire sensor information with the use of multiple sensor types, such as an MOS sensor and ionization and optical smoke sensors, is shown to be important for nuisance alarm discrimination and early mine fire detection.

A generalized flow diagram is presented in Figure 1, which shows the relationship of major model functions. This chart does not necessarily represent the anatomy of the computer program, but is designed to illustrate the informational interchange between major model functions. The related flow-charts-and computer program are listed in Parts I and II, Appendix A, respectively. Mine Car Stations The mine car stations are the activity centers for the model. The locomotive logic structure is designed to provide these stations with adequate cars and to clear them of car buildup. The model is designed to simulate a three stage haulage situation which suggests the need to differentiate station levels by type numbers. These are: a) TYPE 1 stations - mine cars are loaded here; b) TYPE 2 stations - intermediate stop and storage for mine cars; c) TYPE 3 stations - all mine cars that are stored here leave mine; and d) TYPE 4 stations - mine portal. TYPES 1, 2, and 3 have all loaded cars assigned to an ascending TYPE as their next destination. In input, if single stage haulage is designated, TYPES 1 and 3 do not exist, and if two stage haulage is called for, TYPES 2 and 3 are absent. Application of Proposed Revised Standards 57.11-50 to Mines Surveyed 3.1 Subparagraph (a) 1 "Each mine shall have at least two separate and properly maintained escapeways from each working place to the surface which are so positioned that physical or environmental damage to one will not lessen the effective¬ness of the other, and which meet the requirements of travelways and man hoisting standards These escape¬ways shall reach to within 1000 feet horizontally or 300 feet vertically of each working place " 3. 1. 1 Discussion This section will deal with the 1000 and 300 feet distance requirements, Section 3. 5 will deal with the "environmental damage" provisions. During the course of the mine surveys, it became obvious that one mine&apos;s 1000 foot distance was nowhere near equal to another&apos; s --not in the actual distance but in the time required to traverse that distance. This -Ls true for the 300-foot requirement as well. The most obvious example is that one could traverse down a 300-foot raise much faster than climbing up the same distance. The temptation is strong to recommend that the distance requirement be changed to travel times instead. However, this approach would unfortunately lead to a lot of subjective evaluations. Having a time requirement for an entire mine evacuation (Subparagraph 6) is one thing, time requirements and the requisite inspection proce¬dures for each working place are quite another.

Provide mine safety personnel, MSHA inspectors, and original-equipment manufacturers with guidelines and a check list for inspecting rollover protection structures (ROPS) being used in mining operations. The Problem ROPS are provided on mobile surface mining equipment to protect operators from such safety hazards as machine rollovers, falling objects, and collisions. However, the protective capability of a ROPS can be greatly reduced if it is damaged. Certain kinds of damage, such as hair- line cracks, corrosion, and loosened bolts, may occur as a result of normal machine use but may not be recognized as unsafe by untrained personnel. Therefore, the Bureau of Mmes designed a manual which can be used by mine personnel when inspecting ROPS equipment. The Manual The manual was prepared to help acquaint mine safety personnel and MSHA inspectors with typical ROPS deficiencies and their causes. It provides a systematic means for inspecting ROPS so that the identified deficiencies and their causes can be corrected. It is suggested that an inspection of the ROPS be conducted after every 1,000 h of equipment operation, or sooner if the structure has been subjected to any unusual loads which could cause damage, such as a rollover, highwall caving, or collision. The manual also details common deficiencies in the structure and attachment hardware which may affect the service life. The checklist, when used as instructed in the manual, provides a means for systematically inspecting the structure to ensure maximum protective capability and conformance with applicable Federal regulations.

Provide d comprehensive source of up-to-date information about technology for revegetating coal mined lands. Approach A great deal of activity and research in the field of coal mine revegetation has been reported in technical literature, both before and after the passage of Public Law 95-87, the Surface Mining Control and Ruclamation Act of 1977 (SMCRA). This information is widely scattered throughout books, scientific journals, periodicals, Government reports, and other sources, and there has been a need to develop a method of accessing it quickly and efficiently. At the request of the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement which promulgates and enforces regulations implementing the act, the Bureau of Mines has prepared a document that identifies literature relevant to coal mine revegetation. Most of the literature available on this subject has been published during the past 15 years. To tap this reservoir of information, 14 data bases were accessed from DIALOG SDI (Selective Dissemination of Information) Service using three keyword combinations (surface mining and reclamation, strip mining and reclamation, and revegetation). This procedure generated over 7,000 listings. The U.S. Department of Energy&apos;s ENERGY data base was selected from the 14 DIALOG bases, both for its large number of listings and for its broad coverage of literature. This data base contains all the unclassified information that passes through the Technical Information Center of the Department of Energy, including reports, journal articles, conferences, patents, books, monographs, theses, and engineering materials relating to energy development.

Provide the mining industry with a wireless surveying system for increasing efficiency in the drilling of methane drainage or exploration boreholes. Approach The Bureau of Mines has pioneered the technique of methane control by drilling long, horizontal drainage holes from within the mine complex. It was recognized during the early drainage projects that a major portion of the drilling operation was dedicated to hole surveying. In some cases more time was actually being spent on the surveying operation than on drilling. The large amount of time required for hole surveying was the result of having to pump an instrument to the bottom of the hole, then retrieve it with an attached wire line. Naturally as hole depth increased, so did the amount of time needed to perform the survey operation. If the survey operation could be improved it was obvious that overall efficiency in drilling of long, horizontal methane drainage holes would be greatly increased. The Bureau of Mines, therefore, developed, fabricated and tested in an operating coal mine a permissible wireless survey system specifically designed for small diameter methane drainage drilling. The prototype survey system was completed in 1982 and was given the IR-100 Award by Industrial Research and Development Magazine. A second generation survey system is currently being constructed using updated state-of-the-art electronic technology. The second generation system will be more portable, more reliable, easier to maintain, and less costly.

This report presents data on individual plants of the fuel-briquet and packaged-fuel industries that were circularized by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, in its annual survey for 1958. Only plants that processed fuels of mineral origin were included; specifically, plants that manufactured briquets from charcoal were excluded. Fuel briquets and packaged fuel are manufactured by mixing fine-sized fuels with binders and compressing into small individual shapes. Both are used mainly for residential heating in the United States, but they differ considerably in appearance and physical characteristics. Briquets usually are produced as small, pillow-shaped forms, 2 to 4 inches in length, weighing from 2 to 4 ounces. Pack-aged fuel consists of 3-to 4-inch cubes, 6 or 8 of which are wrapped in heavy kraft paper to form a package weighing 10 to 15 pounds. Briquets are made with a water-insoluble binder and are designed for rough handling and outdoor storage, whereas packaged fuel generally is made with a water-soluble binder and must be stored indoors to prevent deterioration. Briquet plants are relatively large and usually are at mines or in dock areas where large quantities of fine-sized fuels accumulate. Packaged-fuel plants are smaller and are used chiefly by retail dealers to convert locally available coal and coke fines into a product that can be burned efficiently in residential beating equipment.

luring the past two years the Bureau of ?,lines has been receiving from 100 to 150 coal mines in various States a report of each accident causing death, permanent total disability, permanent partial disability, or temporary disability lasting beyond the remainder of the day or shift on which the accident occurred. For each 100 accidents in these groups, there are perhaps from 35 to 45 accidents that do not disable the employee beyond the remainder of the day, and of these fraction-of-a-day accidents the Bureau has compiled no statistics. Information revealed by the reports is to the effect that falls of roof and coal in bituminous coal mines are responsible for 28 per cent of the temporary injuries to underground workers and 33 per cent of the days lost from all temporary injuries underground; they also indicate that falls caused 59 per cent of the deaths from all causes underground. Figures compiled by R. N. Hosler, of the Pennsylvania. Mine Rating Bureau, and covering accidents in bituminous; minis in that State, chow that 61 per cent of the deaths underground during the years 1917-1921 wore due to falls. Neither of these percentage figures includes deaths in major explosions; figures for all bituminous mines in the United States during the five years 1920-1024, inclusive of deaths in major explosions, show that 52 per cent of the deaths underground and in shafts were due to falls of roof and coal.

To assess the efficacy and economics of producing power from coal, four open-cycle magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) processing schemes were selected for study. Each involved a different mode of coal combustion and level of gas cleanliness. The options considered were: (1) coal burned in a slagging combustor; (2) suspension gasification with slag removal prior to combustion; (3) parallel cyclone combustors, one operating fuel rich and the other operating with excess air; and (4) suspension gasification by the hot exhaust gases from the MHO duct with ash removed prior to combustion. Option 1 has the highest ash content in the combustion plasma and as a result would have the greatest operational difficulties associated with it. Options 2 and 4 have the cleanest MHD combustion plasma. For coal priced at $4/ton, the power generating cost of option 4,11.78 mills/Kw-hr, is the highest, with Option 1, at 9.04 mills/kW-hr the lowest. These costs may be compared with a conventional power cost of 9.92 mills/kW-hr for the late seventies. Capital costs of three of the four options were competitive with those of conventional thermal power plants employing stack gas S02 cleanup systems. Option 2 has the most favorable combination of operating characteristics and power cost. It was concluded that a clean, high-temperature working fluid can probably be produced from coal without leading to depressed system efficiencies and exorbitant capital costs.

The National Mining Association and the Mine Safety and Health Administration requested that the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conduct full-scale evaluations of a recently developed carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) reinforcement technique for upgrading existing mine ventilation seals to withstand an explosion pressure of 50 psi or greater. The evaluation was conducted in the NIOSH Pittsburgh Research Laboratory’s Lake Lynn Experimental Mine (LLEM) near Fairchance, PA. The purpose of the evaluation was to determine the blast resistance of the CFRP reinforcement technique, designed to increase the strength of two types of existing 20-psi-rated in situ mine ventilation seals. Two candidate ventilation seals were selected to represent the 20-psi alternative seal designs typical of those used in mines prior to July 2006. Installed within the LLEM were (1) a 4-ft-thick pumpable cementitious foam seal using material with a designed 150- to 200-psi average compressive strength at 28 days and (2) a 24-in-thick, low-density cementitious block seal with a center pilaster and keyed to the floor and ribs. The materials necessary for the CFRP reinforcement technique were then installed on the outby (active) side of each seal, and the seals were subjected to explosion overpressures. Both seals with the CFRP reinforcement retrofit successfully withstood explosion pressures of 60 psi or greater during the full-scale evaluations in the LLEM.

CRUDE OIL refining continued to be the foremost industry of Bahrain in 1963. This island, the largest of a group 30 kilometers off the Saudi Arabian coast, is the site of the first petroleum discovery in the Persian Gulf and in the Arabian peninsular region. The island&apos;s only oilfield was discovered in 1932; exports of crude began in 1934 and the refinery was built in 1936. Although its crude oil has been less than 1 percent of annual Middle East output in recent years, Bahrain has been an important refining center for many years, processing a substantial portion of Saudi Arabian petroleum as well as all local production. The Bahrain refinery annually accounts for 17 percent 0 the petroleum products produced in the Middle East and 25 percent of the exports. Bahrain&apos;s mineral resources consist of oil, gas, and basic construction materials. Petroleum production and refining are the important mineral industries and contribute most of the national income by payments for taxes, wages, and local services including construction and material supply. The petroleum industry has supported a large share of local business and extensive indirect employment, and its early establishment also helped Bahrain to strengthen its position as a trading center in the Persian Gulf. The country&apos;s entrepôt trade produces about 20 percent of Government revenue, and Bahrain is somewhat less dependent on the petroleum industry than are the neighboring States to the west.

Electrical resistivities for various coal ashes in air and in a nitrogen atmosphere are given over the range 100° to 1,500° F. Resistivity of low-carbon ash in air is very high at low temperature, rises to a maximum at about 250° F, decreases very rapidly with increasing temperature to about 800° F, then decreases gradually to approach an asymptote at 1,500° F. Resistivity of high-carbon ash in air follows this same general trend at values which are much lower and are proportional to the carbon content. After the carbon has been burned off, resistivity of the remaining ash approaches the high values corresponding to low-carbon ash of similar chemistry. Two factorial experiments show the effects of temperature, particle size, chemical content, and compressibility on the resistivities of four fly ashes of widely different chemical composition in the temperature range proposed for coal-fired turbines. Resistivities of all low-carbon ashes tested fall in the range 106 to 107 ohm cm at 1,500° F and should be removable by electrostatic precipitators. Ashes containing carbon in excess of about 8 percent, however, have low resistivity (as determined in nitrogen), especially at high temperatures. Therefore, high-carbon materials may not be collectable in precipitators because the resistivity is below the minimum value necessary for precipitation. Consequently, high carbon residues from partial combustion of coal probably could not be removed effectively at high temperatures.

This paper contains the results of an examination of accident, injury, employment, and production information reported to the U.S. Department of Labor&apos;s Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and provides information on some of the measures longwall mine operators are using to prevent accidents In all industries, technological advances play a key role in determining those who will survive as competitive participants in an increasingly global marketplace. While mining is among the most basic of industries, technological change is neither unfamiliar nor unwelcome to miners. Historically, technological advances in mining, particularly coal mining, have tracked closely with fluctuations in demand. In the early 1900&apos;s, coal accounted for more than three quarters of all the fuel consumed in the U.S. To meet this tremendous demand, underground cuffing machines were introduced, resulting in faster, more efficient coal extraction. Transporting coal to the surface, however, remained labor intensive. In the 1920&apos;s, nearly all underground coal was still being hand loaded. Demand for coal then declined as the price of oil, natural gas, and electricity became competitive. In the late 1930&apos;s and throughout the duration of World War II, coal demand and production was high. By 1940, more than half the coal mined was being mechanically conveyed to the surface. In 1948, the continuous mining method was introduced in the U.S., further accelerating the extraction process. By the 1950&apos;s and 1960&apos;s, however, coal production again declined as railroads converted to diesel fuel and gas and oil provided a larger share of the home heating market. Underground coal mines required even more mechanization to remain competitive as an energy source. The first longwall system was introduced in 1960. By 1995, longwalls were producing more than 189 million tons of clean coal annually, surpassing continuous mining production for the second straight year. The mining of coal and other materials has not come without a huge loss of life and considerable human suffering. More than 103,000 workers died from injuries in U.S. mines in the last 85 years. Between two and three thousand miners died each year from the turn of the century until 1931, many from underground fires and explosions. The U.S. has witnessed a tremendous drop in fatalities in underground coal mines. Credit for that is due to safety inspections and enforcement activities, better safety awareness and practices among management and labor, improved ventilation, the use of safer equipment, and increased mechanization which removed many miners from the hazards at the face and also reduced the size of the mining work force. There is little doubt that longwall mining has greatly increased underground coal mine productivity. The degree to which longwall mining has contributed to a safer work environment for underground miners is more difficult to ascertain.

"Respirable quartz cytotoxicity, as measured by erythrocyte hemolysis and pulmonary macrophage release of lactate dehydrogenase in vitro, is neutralized by boiling in water in glass test tubes for 10 to 40 minutes. The cytotoxicity is reduced to near zero by boiling l to IO mg quartz per milliliter water. For greater concentrations of quartz in water the hemolytic potential after 40 minutes of boiling approaches that of native quartz. Replacing the medium with fresh water midway through boiling results in full detoxification through 20 mg quartz per milliliter water. Pre-boiling the medium with silica reduces the detoxification effect. Detoxification persists after mild drying at l 10°C for 8 hours, and persists after three days of resuspension in water at room temperature.INTRODCJCTIONResearch underway to determine interactions of quartz and other mineral dust surfaces with pulmonary fluids and alveolar macrophages in culture led to the observation that when dusts were autoclaved in aqueous suspension, their cytotoxic effects on macrophages were suppressed, in some cases fully and even after several days incubation with the cells. This finding was in direct contradiction to earlier results from both short term macrophage lysosmal enzyme release assays, as well as longer term cytotoxicity assays from macrophages in culture; in those studies, dusts were steam autoclaved at 121°C with no liquid water but with steam present. 1.2 However detoxification under boiling conditions has been reported in other research. 3 It was decided to use the hemolysis assay to further investigate these findings, because of its sensitivity simplicity and cost.RESCULTS AND DISCCISSIONRespirable quartz dust used in this study was taken from a stock of crystalline silica, Min-U-Sil; obtained from Pennsylvania Sand Glass Corporation, fractionated in air with a particle classifier. The small size fraction retained for use was 80% less than S micrometer particle diameter, with an area equivalent median diameter of 1.24 micrometers as estimated by automated image analysis. The silica was at least 98.S mass percent silica as determined by X-ray energy spectrometric analysis; and the crystalline form was alpha-quartz as determined by X-ray diffraction. It's specific surface area was 3.97 square meters per gram as determined by nitrogen adsorption isotherm methods. I"

During the past year, in producing 500,000,000 tons of coal we wasted or left underground, in such condition that it probably will not be recovered in the future, 250,000,000 tons of coal; we turned loose into the atmosphere a quantity of natural gas larger than the total output of artificial gas during the same period in all the towns and cities of the United States; we also wasted or lost in the mining, preparation, and treatment of other important metalliferous and non- metalliferous minerals from 10 to 50 per cent of the year's produc- tion of such minerals. These losses serve to indicate the importance of inquiries and investigations by the Federal Government for the purpose of lessening the waste of essential resources-investigations on the same general lines as those looking to a reduction in the loss of life in the mining operations of the country and the far more exten- sive investigations looking to the more efficient production and use of agricultural products, both of which are being conducted by the Federal Government. In a consideration of the possible activities of the individual, the State, and the Federal Government in behalf of a less wasteful use of our mineral resources certain facts and principles should be kept clearly in mind, namely: That the present generation has the power, and it will exercise the right, to use as much of the country's resources as it actually needs; there can and there will be no such thing as stinting the present gen- eration by bottling up resources for the use of the future. That the Nation's needs are not likely to be curtailed; these needs will increase with the extent and diversity of the Nation's industries, and they will increase more rapidly than population increases, for the reason that the per capita consumption of mineral products is rapidly increasing; and That the men of this generation will not mine, extract, or use these resources at continuous financial loss to themselves in order that some- thing may be left for the use of future generations; there can be no such thing as a mineral industry without profits.

Some of the investigations conducted by the Bureau of Mines have for their object the collecting and disseminating of information regard- ing methods by which the fuels of the country may be most effi- ciently used. As the analysis of flue gases tends to develop better methods of firing, which in turn reduces waste of fuel, the Bureau of Mines in this bulletin presents for the benefit of those in charge of boiler plants and all other persons interested detailed information on methods of sampling and analyzing flue gases, and on the utilization of the analyses in promoting boiler-room economy. This bulletin is intended to be a companion to Technical Paper 80," and is written in plain and nontechnical language, as far as pos- sible, so that it may be readily understood by persons who have not had the advantage of a technical education. Whenever possible, illustrations of apparatus and methods of handling have been used rather than elaborate descriptions. The material presented in this report is arranged in two parts. The first part contains the description of the apparatus and the methods used in sampling and analyzing flue gases. The second part gives experimental results obtained with the different methods of sampling and collecting flue gas that are recommended in the first part of the report. Only simple apparatus and methods are considered, as they are accurate enough to show the large heat losses due to the use of too much air, and are also accurate enough to indicate any incomplete combustion losses of economic importance. Without doubt the loss due to large excess of air is the greatest one in the boiler room, and can usually be greatly reduced by making proper use of gas analysis. Before engineers in the isolated industrial plants can be induced to analyze for small traces of combustible gases, they must be first taught how to analyze for carbon dioxide (CO), and they must learn to appre- ciate the great possibilities of reducing loss from large excess of air. In carrying out a general plan of ascertaining more efficient and more economical methods of utilizing the fuel resources of the United States, in order to prevent unnecessary waste and thus conserve the available supply, the United States Geological Survey made a series of experiments on the combustion of fuel in house- heating boilers. As it was realized that steam boilers of the ordinary types used for heating private houses are often installed and operated under conditions unfavorable to fuel economy and smoke prevention, these experiments were made with briquets, raw coal, and washed coal, so as to determine what is to be expected of these fuels in a representative house-heating plant, properly installed and operated. Briquetted coal had been frequently tested in the hand-fired furnaces under the Heine boilers in the Survey fuel-testing plant at St. Louis. The results were so satisfactory as regards economy and smokelessness that it was decided to conduct a series of tests to determine the value of this fuel for domestic heating purposes. Beginning in October, 1906, a number of evaporation tests were made on the house-heating boiler installed to heat the buildings occupied by the structural-materials laboratory, both briquets and coal being used. After these tests were well under way, it was thought advis- able to conduct some additional tests under conditions more constant than could be maintained at this plant. A carload of briquets was shipped to the University of Illinois engineering experiment station at Urbana, Ill., where two house-heating boilers of a size commonly used in residences were available. This equipment permitted more uniform conditions of pressure and capacity, making the results more valuable for comparison. Tests were made with this fuel at Urbana in June and July, 1907. The present paper is an account of both series of tests, and includes also details of tests made at Urbana on three standard fuels in the spring of 1908. Coal mining is more widely distributed throughout the United States than is generally known, as 30 States are credited with having coal mines. In 1919 twenty-three of these States each produced at least a million tons of bituminous coal, and all the States produced about 560,000,000 tons. In addition, Pennsylvania produced about 85,000,000 tons of anthracite. Twenty-eight States have regulations prepared by commissions or have enacted laws governing the operation of coal mines. Pennsyl¬vania has separate codes for the anthracite and bituminous fields. The codes may be classified as follows: Twelve distinctly coal¬mining codes; eight codes that are essentially coal mining, but also apply to other mines; five codes that are subdivided, referring partly to coal mines and partly to other mines; and four codes that are essentially metal mining, but apply in part or in whole to coal mining. The first State to have a coal-mining law was Pennsylvania, which enacted a law, for Schuylkill County only, in 1869. The first State to enact a coal-mining law governing all the coal mines in the State was Illinois in 1872, followed by Ohio in 1873. Pennsylvania in 1879 enacted a law for anthracite mines only, but did not enact similar laws for bituminous mines until 1577. At least 10 other States enacted coal-mining laws between the years 1870 and 1890. Before 1890 electricity was little used in coal-ruining operations and therefore practically no provisions governing the installation, inspection, or maintenance of electrical equipment were made in any of the laws enacted up to 1890. In the law of Colorado, approved April 8, 1885, there is a reference to the use of telephones, probably the first reference to electrical equipment of any kind in a State-mining code. Most of the mining codes have been changed from their original form by amendment or by complete revision. In some of the early changes a casual reference is made to the use of electricity or to the handling of electrical equipment. In 1911 Pennsylvania added

For the first time in an underground stone mine, the relationship between roof movement and microseismic emissions was examined in conjunction with two distinct roof fall areas. As roof monitoring increases in acceptance and monitoring technology advances, the goal of providing reliable roof fall detection systems to enhance the safety of underground mine workers moves closer to reality. Instrumental to reaching that goal is the ability to interpret accurately and completely roof movement and microseismic emissions, which can serve as precursors to roof falls. This paper examines the capabilities of convergence and microseismic monitoring systems to better understand roof rock failure mechanics and to anticipate roof falls. An understanding of how these techniques are used and how they interact with each other is critical in developing the most effective ground control strategy for our nation’s mines.
