Bitumninous and semianthracite coal reserves underlie about 1,400 square miles of Arkansas, less than 2.7 percent of the state's total area. These deposits, located near the western border, contain an estimated 2.2 billion tons, of which about half are recoverable. This represents less than one-tenth of one percent of the national reserves. Most of the commercial coal is mined from thin beds that are at least 14 inches thick. In some locations, however, the coal beds can be as much as eight feet thick. Lignite was mined in southern Arkansas before the Civil War. Current estimates indicate that the reserves may be as high as 9 billion tons, which could be used in the state's coal-fired electric generating plants; however, these deposits are not being mined at present. Because many coal operations in Arkansas are small and the demand for coal is unsteady, the industry employs fewer than 25 miners on a daily basis. Arkansas gained primacy when its regulatory program was conditionally approved November 21,1980, subject to the correction of four minor program deficiencies. The regulatory program was fully approved January 22, 1982. Authority of the state to administer its Abandoned Mine Land Reclamation Program was granted upon approval of the Arkansas Reclamation Plan on May 2, 1983. Arkansas was the first state to assume responsibility for abandoned mine land emergency projects when its Reclamation Plan was approved.

Enormous quantities of organic wastes are produced each year in the United States. The total amount is in excess of 2 billion tons and at least 880 million tons of this is moisture- and ash-free organic material (dry organic solids), representing a potential energy source of significant magnitude that is not being utilized. Bureau of Mines scientists have developed methods for converting these wastes to convenient energy forms. This report itemizes and evaluates for the first time in detail the quantities and sources of moisture- and ash-free organic material contained in manure, urban refuse, industrial wastes, sewage solids, and agricultural wastes in the United States. Furthermore, estimates are presented for amounts of organic wastes collected or concentrated. The potential for fuel, either oil or gas, from both the total organic wastes generated and those collected or concentrated is also estimated.

The thermodynamic data presented in the literature for zirconium compounds are incomplete. Among the compounds for which adequate data are Zacking are zirconium fluoride and sulfate. This paper reports experimental heat-content values determined by the Bureau of Mines for these two zirconium salts throughout the temperature range of 273° to 1,200° K. No crystalline transformations were found in the two compounds investigated, and neither of the compounds melted over the temperature range studied. MATERIALS TESTED The Oak Ridge National Laboratories, Oak Ridge, Tenn., supplied the two zirconium salts used in this investigation. The zirconium fluoride was high- purity reactor grade material. The zirconium sulfate contained between 0.01 and 0.10 percent hafnium and calcium, and other elements in concentrations below 0.01 percent, A spectrographic analysis of the two compounds is given in table 1. Before use the compounds were dried at 400° C. for several hours to removed adsorbed moisture.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated tthhee feasibility of substituting platinum- coated metals for bulk platinum shapes as a means for conserving platinum . Platinum coatings were prepared using four different methods of electrodeposition , then tested and evaluated . In order for platinum coatings to be useful in process environments , they must be thick , adherent , stress - free , and pore - free . The Bureau evaluated direct - current , current reversal , cathode shielding , and pulsed- current plating techniques for producing a pore-free platinum electrodeposit from a molten cyanide bath . Aqueous corrosion tests of Fe - 10Cr substrates coated with approximately 25 μm of platinum showed that pulse plating yielded the most corrosion- resistant and , hence , the most pore -free coatings . The morphology of coating cross sections was in all cases columnar . The average grain size of pulse -plated deposits was independent of thickness , while all other plating techniques produced grains that increased in size as the coatings became thicker . It is believed that the constant grain size in the pulse - plated deposits resulted from better mass transport during the electrodeposition .

"The interaction of amorphous 1ilica particles with several hydrogen bonding agents (H2O, C2H5OH, C7H2NO) was investigated by monitoring the changes in the bulk and surface IR vibrational modes of silica using photoacoustic spectroscopy. It is argued that the intensity of the silanol band at 3747 cm-1 provides (an inverse) quantitative measure of the interaction or surface groups, along with the shift in the broad hydroxyl band, the interaction following the order C7H2NO > C2H5OH > H2O. Index Headings: Silica; Surface vibrational modes; Photoacoustic spectroscopy; Hydrogen bonding agents.INTRODUCTIONThe use of m spectroscopy to study the adsorption on solid surfaces is well documented in the literature.1 2 For example, hydroxylation of a clean silica surface results in the formation of the free silanol group Si-OH, with a sharp IR band near 3747 cm-1• Further hydroxylation produces a broad band near 3500 cm-1, which is believed to result from various hydrogen-bonded silanol bands leading to a multilayered surface structure of few nm.3-5 Earlier studies had indicated a relationship between the surface silanol band and various chemical activities of silica such as cytotoxicity, 7- 9 catalysis, 10-12 and others.13 Recent studies from our group14-in which the intensity of the silanol band and cytotoxicity of silica, heat-treated at various temperatures up to 1095°C, were investigated have provided a strong correlation between cytotoxicity and intensity of the silanol band.Coating of silica by PVPNO (polyvinyl-2-pyridine N-oxide with the empirical formula C7H8NO), a strong hydrogen bonding agent, is known to reduce the cytotoxicity of silica, presumably by chemically blocking the silanol groups from phospholipids.15 This interaction of the hydrogen bonding agents with the silica can be studied by m spectroscopy, and Knozinger16 and Rouxlet and Semples11 have used transmission m spectroscopy to study the effect of various chemicals on the surface IR modes of silica. However, one of the major disadvantages of transmission IR spectroscopy is that the sample preparation (grinding and mixing with KBr and pelletizing) usually distorts the surface modes (see, e.g., Ref. 14) and there is always a doubt about the effect of the sample preparation on the measured properties. In recent years, photoacoustic (PA) spectroscopy has become the technique of choice for studying the IR spectra of samples in their natural state, since no sample preparation is necessary.18•19 Moreover, according to a recent paper, 20 the relative intensity of the surface modes in PA spectroscopy of silica particles is much higher than that in transmission FT-IR spectroscopy. Consequently PA spectroscopy is ideal for studying the surface chemistry. In this work, we have used PA spectroscopy to investigate the interaction of three hydrogen bonding agents (C7H8NO, C2H50H, and H20) with the silica surface by monitoring changes in the surface m modes. Our results show that the surface IR modes get perturbed to a larger extent than the bulk IR modes in interaction with the hydrogen bonding agents. Moreover, whereas in the earlier studies, the shift of the broad silanol band near 3500 cm-1 was used as a measure of the interaction with hydrogen bonding agents,16•17 here we show that the relative decrease in the intensity of the sharp silanol band near 3747 cm-1 also serves as a quantitative parameter for the relative surface coverage and surface modification. The Bureau of Mines investigated the mineralogy, tonnage, and beneficiating characteristics of oxidized (nonmagnetic) taconite iron resources of the Western Mesabi Range as part of its program to insure adequate future domestic mineral supplies. Magnetic taconite currently provides about 95 pct of Mesabi production, but the large tonnages of oxidized taconite between the magnetic deposits will be needed to help meet future domestic demand for iron ore. Three bulk samples that represent large tonnages from the Western Mesabi Range were selected to determine their mineral composition and liberation by light optical microscopy and to test their beneficiating response. This report describes the mineralogy and liberation characteristics of the three samples of the Biwabik Iron-Formation for 26.5 mi (42.7 kID) from Keewatin to Grand Rapids, MN. (Details of response to beneficia-tion were reported previously.) The samples represent mostly material from the Lower Cherty Member of the Biwabik-Iron Formation, although one sample included some Upper Cherty Member. Minerals of all three samples were quartz (chert), hematite, goethite, and minor to trace amounts of magnetite, iron carbonate, and iron silicates. It was concluded that the oxidized taconites of the Western Mesabi Range represent a subeconomic indicated resource that can be selectively mined and beneficiated as a future large source of iron feed for steelmaking.

A method is being developed by the Federal Bureau of Mines for recovering lead metal from galena without the generation of SO2. Lead chloride is obtained by leaching lead concentrate at a temperature of approximately 100° C with FeCl3 solution: PbS + 2FeCl. " PbC1 2 + 2FeC1 2 + S. Electrolysis of the PbCI 2 product in a fused-salt bath results in deposition of molten lead metal at the cathode and evolution of chlorine at the anode. The chlorine can then be absorbed in the spent leach solution to regenerate FeCl3 for recycling. Optimum electrolyte composition was a PbC12-LiCl eutectic containing 7.6 wt-pct LiCl. The PbCl2-NaCl eutectic also proved satisfactory. Electrolysis in the PbCl2-LiCl bath at 450° C yielded 99 pct current efficiency at a current density of 5 amp/in2 with an energy requirement of only 0.24 kW-hr/lb metal produced. This compares with 98 pct current effi¬ciency and 0.26 kW-hr/lb metal produced for the PbCI2-NaCI bath. A typical lead deposit contained less than 100 ppm total detectable metallic impurities. At the low temperature employed for electrolysis, there was essentially no vaporization of Pb or FbC12.

The use of fluid jets for industrial purposes has received considerable attention in recent years. The convening of The First International Symposium on Jet Cutting Technology1 in April 1972 devoted solely to this subject probably heralds the coming of age of this new science. It is interesting to note the emphasis in the conference towards the cutting of rocks, minerals, and soils, indicating the attention being devoted to excavation and mining. The use of water streams for mining of minerals is not new. It is well over a century since its first application.2 But its use in coal mining has been somewhat restricted over the years. In the past 30 years the U.S.S.R. has successfully used water for coal extraction, and these techniques have been examined in 15 countries in recent years. In the United States research on various aspects of the method has been conducted for over 15 years,3 but success stories from the Soviet Union,4 JapanS and Canada6 in the last 5 years has spurred greater enthusiasm. IIT Research Institute has done pioneering work in the 7-12 13-15 area of water jetting for rock and coal breakage. It has just completed an experimental study involving mining of coal with a 50,000-psi and 100,000-psi jet in a stripping operation14 under the sponsorhip of the U. S. Bureau of Mines (Contract No. HOll1789). As a complementary program the Bureau initiated a project to design a water-jet coal-mining machine (Contract No. H0133119). IITRI was a successful bidder on this competitive procurement.

The realization that there is a limit to our supply of domestic mineral and fuel resources, which have been taken for granted until recently, has stimulated the need for conservation and optimum utilization of the Nation's minerals, metals, and fuels-resources critical to our national economy. The mission of the Bureau of Mines is to develop new technology, improve existing technology, and disseminate information related to mineral resources and industries. Fulfilling the mission is necessary to insure a continuing, adequate supply of minerals and alternative supplies of energy from reliable sources at the lowest possible cost to society and the environment. Established in 1910, the Bureau of Mines under the Department of the Interior is the Federal Government's primary research arm in the mineral field. Since the transfer of the fossil fuels portion of the energy research program to the newly organized Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA) in fiscal year 1975, Bureau research has been concentrated on increasing mineral production, decreasing energy usage through more efficient processing, and decreasing material losses caused by corrosion. Concurrently, research is being addressed to improved coal-preparation techniques, especially to expanding utilization of low-grade coals and coals difficult to beneficiate, which are essential for reducing the need for petroleum and natural gas supplies and for redirecting our energy consumption. Fluctuations in the availability of foreign sources of minerals, metals, and fuels due to political and economic variability among nations have necessitated intensified investigation into coal mining, uranium-ore processing, and geothermal energy sources-three alternatives that can help to alleviate the dependence of the United States on foreign sources of energy.

The panic bars (and associated linkages and electrical circuitry) that are defined in this document are a machine operator-actuated control for the emergency deenergization of the tram motors on self-propelled, electric and diesel face equipment; including haulage equipment such as shuttle cars. There are nine basic types of panic bars (and several variations) that are recommended in this document, but all of the panic bars are characteristically of the ?fire door? type that is frequently encountered on outside exit doors of many public and some commercial buildings. It is also the intent of the following panic bar designs that, when emergency brakes are added to the face equipment machinery for which they are required, that they be designed and hooked up so that actuation of the panic bar will result in automatic application of the emergency brakes (immediately following the deenergization of the tram motors). The following panic bar design requirements are a restatement of the proposed requirements defined in the Federal Register, requirements cited in "Guidelines for the Design and Installation of Devices for Deenergization of Self -Propelled Electric Face Equipment/Automatic Emergency Brake s II by C. E. Lester and J. D. Greenhalgh of MESA, and Bendix recommendations that were formulated as a result of discussions with personnel at the various machine manufacturers and underground coal mines that we surveyed, discussions with G. L. Judy (our consultant), etc:

As part of an interegency agreement with the Energy Research end Development Administration to develop unproved refractory materials for use in coal gasification processes, the Bureau of Mines reviewed the literature to determine the effect of steam, H2, CO, and CH4 as well as the alkali metal oxides K2O and Na2O on refractory materials. Emphasis was given to the performance of high-alumina castable and fired refractories to conditions expected in coal gasification processes. Approximately 85 references were reviewed with 40 cited in the text. The literature was found to contain little data directly applicable to the selection of refractory lining materials suitable for use under the conditions of temperature, pressure, and gas compositions expected in second generation coal gasification reactors.

A single boom roof bolting machine was outfitted with measurement and recording systems for detecting changes in machine parameters while drilling. The purpose of this instrumented bolter or "smart drill" is to detect changes in roof conditions from the machine parameters of penetration rate, thrust, rotation rate, torque, rejected light from rock cuttings, and vibration of the roof during drilling. The system was demonstrated underground in coal mine conditions and showed correlation between rock type and drilling parameters.

Elemental carbon (EC) is currently used as a surrogate for diesel particulate matter (DPM) in underground mines since it can be accurately measured at low concentrations and diesels are the only source of submicrometer EC in underground mines. A disadvantage of using EC as a surrogate for DPM is that the fraction of EC in DPM is a function of various engine parameters and fuel formulations, etc. In order to evaluate how EC predicts DPM in the underground mining atmosphere, measurements of total carbon (TC; representing over 80% of the DPM) and EC were taken away from potential interferences in four underground metal/non-metal mines during actual production. In a controlled atmosphere, DPM mass, TC, and EC measurements were also collected while several different types of vehicles simulated production with and without different types of control technologies. When diesel particulate filters (DPFs) were not used, both studies showed that EC could be used to predict DPM mass or TC. The variability of the data started to increase at TC concentrations below 230, µg/m3 and was high (>+20%) at TC concentrations below 160 µg/m3, probably due to the problem with sampling organic carbon (OC) at these concentrations. It was also discovered that when certain DPFs were used, the relationship between DPM and EC changed at lower DPM concentrations.

This literature study of methods for desulfurizing residual fuel oil was conducted by the Bureau of Mines at the request of the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. The sulfur compounds in residual fuels are believed to consist chiefly of condensed thiophenes and other polycyclic sulfur compounds. Hydrodesulfurization appears to be the most promising method for desulfurizing these oils and is the only method applicable to all types of sulfur compounds. There are indications in the literature that hydrodesulfurization without hydrocracking of residual oils may require higher pressures than used in present desulfurization processes, but no cost data and little experimental data are available on the higher pressure operation. Literature proposals for hydrogenating residual oils and heavy crude oils are exclusively for hydrocracking the oils to lower boiling products with accompanying partial desulfurization of the residual fuel fraction. Costs of the hydrocracking operations appear the closest available to probable costs of hydrodesulfurizing the oils, and have been reported (in 1955 to 1957) as $500 to $840 investment cost per daily barrel of capacity, with total operating costs of 70 cents to $1.10 per barrel.

The thermodynamic properties of two manganese silicates, pyroxmangite and fowlerite (zincian rhodonite), were experimentally determined by the Bureau of Mines. The standard enthalpies of formation were determined by hydrofluoric acid (HF) solution calorimetry, the low-temperature heat capacities by adiabatic calorimetry, and the high-temperature heat capacities by differential scanning calorimetry over the range 322 to 1,372 K. Standard enthalpies, Gibbs energies, and equilibrium constants of formation are given as a function of temperature from both the elements and the constituent oxides.

This report presents depth and producing rate statistics pertaining to oil reservoirs (or fields) in each of the 14 States that produced more than 20 million bbl of oil during 1965. The combined oil production was about 2.6 billion bbl, or 96 pct of the U.S. total. Data are presented for each of the 14 States, each Texas Railroad Commission district, and four geographical areas of Louisiana. About 8 pct of the total oil produced in the 14 States was from depths of lees than 2,000 ft, 24 pct from 2,000 to 4,000 ft, 22 pct from 4,000 to 6,000 ft, 16 pct from 6,000 to 8,000 ft, and 30 pct from 8,000 ft and deeper. The average production per well in the 14 States ranged from 4.4 bopd for wells less than 2,000 ft deep to 57.6 bopd for wells 8,000 it and deeper. Data indicate that 9.5 pct of the 460,968 wells produced more than 1.2 billion bbl or 46.6 pct of the total oil. Oil production from reservoirs (or fields) not undergoing stimulative recovery operations, such as steam, air, gas, or water injection, wee about 1.1 billion bbl or 42.1 pct of the total.

In a search for improved methods of upgrading tar obtained by low-temperature carbonization of coal, monoethanolamine (MEA) was found to be effective in extracting tar acids from coal tar distillates derived from a subbitunwous and a lignite coal. Patch extractions showed that both yield and purity of the extracted acids improved with increasing volume ratios of monoethanolamine to tar acid, varied from 1:4 to 8:1. Yield improved, but purity decreased as the concentration of monoethanolamine was changed from 30 to 70 volume-percent, and as the concentration of tar acid in distillate was increased ad from 14 to 45 percent. In a continuous countercurrent extraction employing a double solvent (monoethanolamine and hexane) approximately 80 percent of the tar acids was extracted from 170° to 350° C. tar distillate when using 1.6:1 volume ratios of amine:tar acids. Tar acids isolated from his extract, although of improved purity, contained appreciable quantities of neutral oils and some tar bases. Aqueous monoethanolamine was not effective for extracting the last 10 to 15 percent of tar acids in 170° to 350° C. distillate oil from lignite coal. The highest yield of isolated tar acids and the best recovery of monoethanolamine were obtained by diluting the extract with water and saturating with C02. Some losses of solvent were encountered when aqueous monoethanolamine solutions were heated through decomposition of the amine with the liberation of ammonia.
