"Abstract- The Century mine in northwest Queensland,Australia, is a major sediment-hosted zinclead- silver orebody, located within the western Mount Isa Basin. Stratiform, carbonaceous shalehosted mineralization is developed within Proterozoic shale and siltstone sequences of the Lawn Hill Formation. CRA Exploration Pty Ltd (CRAE) discovered the Century deposit in 1990 and open pit mine development commenced in 1998 under the ownership of Pasminco Century Mine Limited (PCML). The deposit contains an identified mineral resource of 105 Mt @ 12.1% Zn + 1.7% Pb + 46 g/t Ag (Broadbent and Waltho, 1998) which is currently being mined at a rate of 5 Mt/y.In December 1998, an exothermic reaction was observed between explosives spilt onto shale drill cuttings from a blasthole. This reaction is referred to as ‘reactive ground’ and has the potential to cause premature detonation of explosives in a charged blasthole with catastrophic consequences. The incident led to a subsequent geological and geochemical assessment of the different rock types at the Century deposit and their potential reactivity with ammonium nitrate-based (AN) explosive products. This assessment was conducted in an attempt to characterize zones safe for blasting with uninhibited AN-based explosive products. A direct result of this study is a set of procedures outlining the use of different AN-based explosives in areas defined as potentially reactive or non-reactive for the different lithologies present. Black shales contained in both the waste and mineralized sequences contain the sulfide mineral pyrite (FeS2), which is thermodynamically unstable with AN contained in commonly used explosives. The potential reactivity of partially weathered pyrite can ultimately result in the decomposition of an AN-based explosive. It was determined that only pyritic black shales showed any potential to react with AN, irrespective of their position in the stratigraphic sequence. Other lithologies present at Century, including Proterozoic sandstone and Cambrian limestone, are classified as non-reactive with AN. This is a geological risk management situation present at the Century mine."

"An antimony-bearing gold ore was studied in a cyanide slurry containing 7 -20 ppm dissolved oxygen. 1 g/L NaCN at pH 9.5 and 48 hours retention time is required to extract 94 % of the gold from the 90 % minus 200 mesh ore by conventional cyanidation at a 7 ppm O2. As oxygen concentration was increased to 20 ppm, the conditions required to extract the same amount of gold were: 0.25 g/L NaCN, 16 hours retention time and 80% minus 200 mesh. Compared to conventional cyanidation, oxygen-enriched leaching was shown to reduce retention time by three times and cyanide consumption by four times. The kinetics of gold dissolution related to the dissolved oxygen concentration in slurry was expressed by following equation:XAu = 100 * (Kt + I0) / (1 + Kt + I0)where XAu is the percentage gold extraction; t is the retention time; K and Io are the slope and the intercept of the plot of XAu I (100 -XAu) vs. t respectively. The values of Kand Io depend upon the concentrations of cyanide and oxygen, the fineness of grind and the origin of ore sample etc.. A preliminary cost analysis was also performed to justify the use of oxygenating slurries.IntroductionGeneral:It was proposed almost 149 years ago (Elsner 1846) that oxygen is required for the dissolution of gold in cyanide solution. However, little attention were paid to oxygen application in the gold milling industry during the following one hundred years. Due to the constraints of gold price, reagent costs, refractory ores, and environmental issues in the past decade, the oxygen enhancement in the cyanidation process was introduced to the gold milling industry for increasing operation efficiency, reducing production costs, and meeting the requirement of environmental standard.The advantages of oxygen-enriched cyanidation have been reviewed by several investigators (Hague 1992, Jara et al 1992, Henderson 1989, Loroesch et al 1988, Elmore 1987, Cathro 1963). "Fording Coal is a wholly owned subsidiary of Canadian Pacific Limited. The company was founded in 1968 to mine metallurgical coalfor export at the Fording River operations in southeast British Columbia.Today, Fording Coal Limited also operates the Whitewood mine under contract to TransAlta Utilities and the Genesee mine under a joint venture arrangement with Edmonton Power. Both these operations are located just west of Edmonton and produce subbituminous low-sulphur coal which is used for power generation. Fording also owns and operates two industrial mineral mines in the United States and is mining overburden under a lo-year contract with Syncrude Canada at Fort McMurray.As of December 1992, Fording Coal Limited owns and operates the Greenhills mine which was closed due to bankruptcy. This papers deals with the innovations and changes which have been made and those which are currently being implemented to make this operation competitive in the world export coal market. IntroductionOn December 4, 1992, following a tendering process, Fording Coal was awarded 80% controlling interest in the Greenhills mine by Trustee Arthur Andersen Inc. Assets acquired included 100010 of the land and coal leases and 80% of the major joint venture assets including all structures. The remaining 20% is owned by Pohang Steel Canada Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Pohang Iron Steel Co. of Korea. The Greenhills mine had been in continuous operation since 1983 and was finally closed due to bankruptcy of its majority owner on October 31, 1992.A permit to operate the Greenhills mine was issued by the British Columbia government on January 29, 1993, and Fording Coal Limited started mining operations in late February 1993.To return the Greenhills mine to profitability significant changes were required in workforce productivity, mining methods and equipment selection. These mine plan changes are designed to make the Greenhills operation competitive in world markets, provide longterm employment for the company's workforce and ensure that a secure supply of coal is available."

"Over forty years of uranium mining in the Elliot Lake region of Ontario (I 956-1996) has resulted in the production of over 300 million pounds of uranium. With the completion of mining activity, Rio Algom Limited and Denison Mines Limited are utilizing progressive environmental technologies and management systems to reduce and manage the environmental risks associated with the 150 million tonnes of potentially acid-generating tailings in nine regional waste management areas. Water covers designed to reduce oxygen entry and thereby significantly inhibit acid generation have been applied at six of the sites with the Quirke site serving as a demonstration site for the Mine Environmental Neutral Drainage program. All five of Rio Algom Limited' s effluent treatment plants are monitored and controlled from a central control station utilizing a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system based on ""Fix Dmacs"" technology. Scheduling, auditing and reporting of plant operating and environmental monitoring programs for the entire watershed are controlled utilizing the Regional Environmental Information Management System (REIMS). Proper application of these technologies and management systems facilitates delivery of cost-effective environmental monitoring, care and maintenance programs at these sites and provides tools to demonstrate compliance with all environmental performance criteria.IntroductionCost-effective management of multiple tailings management areas distributed throughout a 35 km watershed requires the application of leading-edge environmental technologies. Long-term monitoring, care and maintenance costs must first be minimized through the application of decommissioning technologies that inhibit acid generation and minimize the release of contaminants from the sites. On-going operating costs must then be controlled through the application of environmental management strategies that optimize the allocation of resources while ensuring compliance with regulatory and Company environmental requirements.Using sites in the Serpent River Watershed as an example, this paper demonstrates the effectiveness of water covers as a decommissioning strategy to inhibit acid generation. In addition, the Telemetered Environmental Operating Control System and Regional Environmental Information Management System are reviewed as examples of the application of environmental technologies to the management of environmental programs."

"The polymetallic sulfide ore in Jiama county of Tibet contains 0.78% Cu, 0.046% Mo, 0.31 g/t Au and 17.9 g/t Ag in average. However, heavy loss of valuable metals was observed using high-pH process and Butyl xanthate as the collector. In this paper, the flotation was optimized through the adoption of a novel collector C-7, which is a mixture of xanthate ester and thionocarbamate. This collector showed better flotation performance under weak base conditions. The recoveries of Cu, Mo, Au and Ag increased to 93.24%, 84.60%, 78.13% and 75.41%, respectively, under 15 g/t of C-7 at pH of 8.0. The adsorption mechanism of C-7 was investigated by micro-flotation tests, zeta potential measurements, FTIR analysis and adsorption quantity measurements. Chemisorption of C-7 on chalcopyrite surface is demonstrated with adsorption density 3.8 times higher than on pyrite.INTRODUCTIONXanthates are the most commonly used collectors of strong collecting ability for separating copper sulfide minerals from gangue in froth flotation. However, the selectivity of xanthates themselves is poor to realize separation of chalcopyrite and pyrite whose floatability are quite similar (Heyes & Trahar, 1977; Chandraprabha, Natarajan, & Modak, 2004). High pH process with xanthates as collectors is proved effective in copper-sulfur separation and is widely used in treatment of copper sulfide ore flotation (Smith, 1996; Valdivieso, Cervantes, Song, Cabrera, & Laskowski, 2004). This method could get ideal separation results, but large amount of lime must be added, and could bring about increased cost, device corrosion and environmental pollution. In addition, there could also be high depression and heavy loss of associated noble metal such as Mo, Au and Ag. Consequently, a large amount of research has been conducted on substitutions of xanthates for selective flotation of copper sulfide ores under low pH conditions (Gholivand, Khodadadian, & Ahmadi, 2010; Li, 2010)."

"Peñoles is a mining group with integrated operations for the smelting and refining of non-ferrous metals, and it is also a chemicals producer. Peñoles is the world’s foremost producer of refined silver, metallic bismuth and sodium sulphate. It is also the leading Latin American producer of refined gold, lead and zinc. The Met-Mex Peñoles Zinc Plant commenced operations in 1973 with an annual production capacity of 105,000 t/y zinc. Since then, production capacity has increased, and at present, it stands at 240,000 t/y zinc. In this paper, the leaching process and particularly the operation of the jarosite circuit is reviewed, specifying process improvements to treat high iron calcines.INTRODUCTIONTwenty years ago the Electrolytic Zinc Plant in Peñoles was treating high quality zinc concentrates with low concentrations of iron (~7.5 wt.%) and silica (1.8 wt.%). Nowadays the quality of zinc concentrates is poor with a typical iron content of around 11 wt.% and silica at 2.0 wt.%. This has created numerous processing problems in our roast-leach-purification- electrolysis sections. In order to meet customer requirements it is necessary to find processing solutions to assure the operational continuity of the plant. These processing solutions are the focal point of this paper.REVIEW OF THE LEACHING PROCESSThe purpose of the leaching process is to recover the metals, mainly zinc, through a series of extraction stages with sulphuric acid solutions, which progressively increases the zinc dissolution. After the series of acidification stages, the solution, which is rich in iron, is sent to the jarosite circuit to separate zinc from iron (Garcia & Valdez, 1996). The first step of the leaching process is the neutral leach circuit which produces a zinc sulphate solution that is sent to the purification section for the removal of impurities such as cadmium, cobalt and copper. Then this solution is sent to the tank house to feed the electrolytic cells."

"In this paper, the mechanical properties of Tournemire argillite are modeled using a mathematical framework which employs the microstructure tensor approach (Pietruszczak & Mroz, 2000). The experimental data incorporates the results of a series of triaxial tests (Abdi & Evgin, 2013) conducted at different orientation of bedding planes relative to the direction of loading. First, a plasticity framework is presented which involves the specification of the conditions at failure as well as the description of the irreversible deformation process. Later, a systematic procedure is outlined for identification of material functions/parameters involved. The paper is concluded by presenting the results of numerical simulations of the triaxial tests. It is demonstrated that the model can adequately reproduce the primary effects of anisotropy in the stable deformation regime as well as the onset of fracture.INTRODUCTIONThe understanding of the mechanical behaviour of argillaceous rocks is important in many types of geotechnical projects, including petroleum extraction, carbon dioxide sequestration as well as deep geological disposal of radioactive waste. In all these cases, the primary concern is the onset and propagation of damage due to excavation, transport of pore fluids and/or elevated temperature. The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC), Canada’s nuclear regulator, will be responsible for the licensing of future deep geological repositories. In order to evaluate the safety of deep geological repositories, CNSC staff keep abreast of scientific developments by collaborating with national and international partners on experimental and theoretical research on the long-term performance of those engineered and natural barriers. Through that collaboration, the CNSC has access to data resulting from experiments performed at different Underground Research Laboratories (URL). Such an URL is situated in Tournemire, France, in an argillaceous rock formation, the Tournemire argillite. The Tournemire argillite is characterized by the presence of closely spaced bedding planes and exhibits a strong anisotropic behaviour, so that its strength as well as deformation properties are directionally dependent."

"At Smoky River Coal Limited (SRCL), economic occurrences of structurally thickened coal deposits form attractive surface mining targets. These steeply dipping, structurally complex deposits require that special attention be given to pit wall design and operational practices.Where anchor support is feasible, there is potential for reducing footwall waste requirements and/or increasing coal recovery. SRCL has used rock anchors to support footwall slopes since 1985. This paper outlines design considerations and performance of rock anchor support systems at SRCL.Three case histories are included that illustrate the design process for supporting steeply dipping footwall slopes using rock anchors.IntroductionWestern Canada contains vast reserves of high grade coking coal largely located in two belts within the Rocky Mountain Foothills straddling the Alberta/British Columbia border. There are about one billion tonnes of ""clean"" coking coal reserves (Romaniuk and Naidu, 1986) situated near existing mining infrastructure. Within the reserve areas shown in Figure I, a total of six producers operate 10 large mines linked with ports situated on Canada's west coast. Al! of the producers operate conventional shovel/truck surface pits.Surface mineable reserves within some of the mountain coal mines are located on dip slopes or where the geologic structure has thickened the coal near the surface, creating low strip ratio targets. Footwall slopes in these mines are developed parallel to bedding, thus minimizing waste extraction and preventing undercutting of potentially unstable strata. The base of the mineable coal measures in both north and south regions is marked by massive quartz sandstone units (Torrens Member and Moose Mountain Member) which often form the footwall. Footwalls developed within this basal sandstone unit can attain very high unbenched heights often with little risk of instability. In cases where the footwall is developed on weaker strata above this basal unit, stability considerations control slope height when bedding dips exceed about 30°. In these situations it is desirable to assess the benefits of artificial support to increase the unbenched footwall slope height."

"Managing safety on the basis of after-the-fact reaction to accidents, can never be more than partially successful. Injuries will occur as long as the underlying potential for them still exists. Unless unsafe actions and conditions are systematically decreased, no program can have more than a short-term success.The pro-active Bullmoose loss control process, instead, focusses on heightening awareness of work habits, to prevent incidents by reducing their potential.Any safety program will be doomed to failure if the development of safe work habits depends on the safety supervisor or a safety committee. At Bullmoose the focus is on the critical actions out of which losses emerge. The successful application of performance-related feedback is achieved by taking safety, health, and environmental concerns into consideration on every level, and, by doing the right thing in every job done.What is an Exceptional Loss Control Program?If an accident in an organization creates a flurry of interest, resulting in ""cracking down"" on violations for a short period of time then an ""exceptional"" loss control program exists. Unfortunately, exceptional here does not refer to the effectiveness of quality of the program but to the fact that the organization is managing loss control by exception. The degree of management attention in an ""exceptional"" safety program varies over a period of time, remaining low as long as the rate of losses stays within management's acceptable control limit (Fig. I). When the losses rise above this, management becomes motivated to begin ""exceptional"" efforts to manage losses. When the rate falls again to within the accepted limit, efforts to control losses take a back seat.Such a strategy guarantees that losses will be tolerated or ignored as long as the actual rate is below the acceptable limit. Simply to lower the limit would not reduce losses, but would result in an increased number of flurries of management attention to loss control. This ""on-again, off-again"" style of management teaches supervisors and others that basic loss control is not as important as are statistics."

Many owners are also concerned with employee's well being and their company's public image.EmployeesJob security and a good income are probably still the most important demands, however, as time goes by, employees are also demanding more involvement in safety issues, working conditions, and even how work is done.The PublicThe public requires acceptable environmental standards, as well as enjoying the prosperity supplied by a successful operation.How are Mines Managed?Most mines are managed very traditionally. The basic credo is that the managers make the decisions, and the hourly, and junior salaried employees do what they are told. Clearly this is the extreme case, epitomized by the long service shift boss who might say ""It took twenty-years to become a shift boss, and no miner is going to tell me what to do"" .There are some exceptions, two notable ones being Campbell-Chibougamau, and T.G.S. (now Kidd Creek Mines) which, in very different circumstances, decided on a more participative style.Campbell-Chibougamau, having closed down due to unprofitable operations, reopened, using a team structure with working leaders, and a system for sharing gains against cost targets with employees. Although the system has some problems, and development miners are bonused conventionally, this has been a basically successful program.Texasgulf Sulphur, a company with a history of non-union operations, and a participative management style, made a corporate decision to operate their Kidd Creek Mine in the same way. The orebody was rich enough to allow them the luxury to do this, but they have never had a strike, so perhaps they have more than saved the cost of the benefits and salaries they needed to pay. They also reward employees with a stock distribution scheme based on service and earnings."

"The Bureau of Mines has developed a particle agglomeration technique to improve the flow of leaching solution through heaps of low-grade gold-silver ores which contain clays. Benchscale experiments and industrial practice have shown that the percolation rate of cyanide leaching solution is greatly enhanced by mixing the ore with Portland cement as a binder, moistening the mixture, mechanically tumbling to form agglomerates, and aging before heap building and leaching. A slight modification ofthe technique allows its application to precious-metal-bearing tailings, which cannot normally be treated by heap leaching because they are too fine. IntroductionMany low-grade gold and silver deposits and tailing materials from former mining operations in the western United States are potential sources for precious metals. These sources are too low grade or too small to support the capital cost of a conventional cyanidation plant but have stimulated the development of lowcost procedures, such as extraction of the precious metals by heap leaching with cyanide. The Bureau of Mines has investigated methods to improve the recovery ofgold and silver by heap leaching these low-grade materials.For heap leaching to be successful, the crushed and stacked ore must have good permeability so that uniform distribution of the cyanide leaching solution through the heaps can be achieved. Some of the most difficult gold and silver ores to treat by heap leaching are those containing excessive amounts of clays, or fines generated during crushing. Excessive amounts of slimes, generally minus 50-micrometre or 270-mesh Tyler sieve size particles, in the heap feed will slow the percolation of the leaching solution, cause channelling, or produce dormant or unleached areas within the heap, resulting in long leaching periods and low extractions. In extreme cases, the clays or slimes can seal the heap and cause the leaching solution to run off the sides of the heap rather than through it."

"A study recently completed by the Prospectors and Developers Association, assisted by the author and computerized mine models he developed, presents a strong case that present tax rules severely handicap the junior exploration company relative to the established producer. This month, Tax Notes briefly summarizes the highlights of the study and some of the Association's ideas which came out of the study.IntroductionIn the case of any industry, a particular project or investment will generally generate a more attractive after-tax rate of return to a tax paying entity than to a non-tax paying entity: the ability to shelter current taxable income with tax deductions related to the project or investment can present a definite advantage as compared to shielding taxable income in the future with the same deductions. But, this advantage is probably seen nowhere more clearly than in the mining industry where the tax rules allow for substantial up-front write-off's. Studies show that the junior mining company which is earning no taxable income currently can be seriously disadvantaged, compared to the mining company which is currently generating taxable profit and paying taxes. This is particularly disturbing when one considers the importance of the junior segment of the mining industry. One might well ask where the equity is, in a tax system which causes the junior company to look at a deposit and see rock in the ground, when at the same time the deposit represents a viable mine to an operating company. This inequity and the importance of the junior mining company have been recognized to some extent in the income tax legislation. In recent years, the expansion of the rules for deducting certain earned depletion allowances against any source of income, and changes to improve the flow-through share rules, have gone part way in helping to put the junior on a more equal footing with the operating company. But it is questionable whether or not these helpful changes to the tax rules have done enough to alleviate the apparent inequities in the income tax legislation."

"PREFACEAt the CIM Annual General Meeting in Quebec City, R.E. Pike of The Toronto-Dominion Bank described how the Canadian banking industry worked with the minerals industry to assemble the large capital requirements for resource projects in Canada and overseas. He developed a profile of the mining industry and Canadian banking, both being important sectors of the Canadian economy and global in context. He also outlined the banking and financing partnership that existed in the past. In looking to the future and challenge that lies ahead f or each industry, Mr. Pike questioned whether the financing practices of the 1970s will be acceptable over the next decade. In that regard, he highlighted the risks that impact on each industry and illustrated how that financing partnership might evolve in response to those forces. The folio wing is a synopsis of his paper.IntroductionThe Canadian mining and metals industry is prominent in the domestic economy and respected internationally. Any measure of its performance illustrates that status-percentage of GNP, employment, exports, capital investment, size relative to other producing nations, etc.Energy, Mines and Resources Canada has forecast that the non-fuel minerals industry will grow in real terms by an average annual rate of 3.0% over the period 1981 to 1991. Using the GNP as reference, that growth in non-fuel mineral production will represent 7.7% of GNP. In translating that growth to capital expenditure, the EMR Canada estimates the aggregate amount at $43.8 billion ('79 dollars) or approximately 12% of total business investment in Canada during the 10-year period.About half of the $43.8 billion will be devoted to the ferrous sector-$8.4 billion in iron ore mining and $12.4 billion in the steel industry. Capital investment in nonferrous s projects is estimated at $13.3 billion, and it is projected at $6.7 billion for industrial minerals. The residual $3.0 .billion is exploration spending."

"The presence of excessive water in the Gibraltar East Stage 1 pit initiated studies into the ground-water conditions that might be expected in mining the Granite Lake and Pollyanna pits. Hydrologic information obtained from a pump test program in 1974 indicated that deep-well dewatering could be successfully achieved. In 1976, a deep-well dewatering system consisting of eight wells was installed on the periphery of the Pollyanna pit . it has been responsible for a significant decrease in mining costs.This paper presents a brief summary of the engineering principles involved in the design of the Gibraltar dewatering system and the problems encountered in the installation and operation of deep-well pumps. IntroductionGibraltar Mines is an open-pit copper-molybdenite mine located approximately 230 air miles north of Vancouver in the central interior of British Columbia (Fig. I). The property consists of three separate major orebodies; Gibraltar East, Granite Lake and Pollyanna (Fig. 2). Mining commenced during the summer of 1971, in the Gibraltar East Stage 1 pit. The Granite Lake Stage 1 pit was mined from mid 1974 to mid 1976. The Pollyanna Stage 1 pit is currently being mined and the Gibraltar East Stage 2 is being developed for production. This report is intended as an outline of the studies and tests leading up to and including the installation of the Pollyanna pit dewatering system, the problems encountered and the results obtained.GeneralIn the summer of 1973, mining in the Gibraltar East pit progressed below ""daylight"" on the down-hill side and ground water very quickly became a costly nuisance in the day-to-day mining operations. Mining, maintenance and blasting costs reflected these problems. Concern was also voiced about adverse effects of ground water on pit wall stability. This concern later became a reality in the Gibraltar East and Granite Lake pits. A study was initiated to investigate various methods and costs of dewatering the pit areas. The study included in-pit sumps, deep peripheral wells and a drainage gallery system located below the pits."

"Prior or simultaneous addition of ammonium sulphate can, not only enhance the activating effect of hydrosulphide ions on xanthate flotation of malachite but it can also eliminate possible detrimental or depressing effects of excess residual hydrosulphide . Use of relatively inexpensive ammonium sulphate appears to reduce the consumption of the much more expensive sulphidizing agent for optimal flotation recovery INTRODUCTIONOxidized copper minerals float poorly with conventional thiol-type collectors. This is believed to be due to the nonadherent character of the collector coating, which is readily re- moved by particle abrasion. Rosas and Polingr reported emulsion flotation seemed capable of resisting abrasion during the flotation of non-sulphide copper ores. It appears that the most common flotation technique for oxidized copper minerals comprises sulphidization with Na .S and subsequent treatment by sulphydryl collector. The principles of this method are available . Malghan recently reviewed the studies on the role of sodium sulphide in the flotation of oxidized copper, lead and zinc minerals.It is well known that in the sulphidized flotation of malachite, the activation process depends strongly on the concentration of the sulphidizing agent, i.e., insufficient sulphide gives poor recoveries because of inadequate sulphidization; excessive sulphide also causes poor recoveries due to the depressive effect of the residual hydro-sulphide ions in solution. A major difficulty in sulphidization, especially with a varying feed nature, is to establish and maintain the optimum sulphide concentration in solution. In plant practice, vigorous control of sodium sulphide is required and stepwise addition of the reagent is recommended to improve the efficiency of the process. Soto and Laskowskim have found that malachite, depressed by an excess of sulphide ions, can restore its floatability if air or oxygen is introduced to the pulp. They attributed this to the oxidation of the HS - ions on the surface of the mineral. Jones and Woodcockuvi showed that a sulphide ion selective electrode could be used to optimize the conditions (e.g . amount of hydrosulphide, sulphidization time, flotation time) more readily and precisely than existing methods in the flotation of oxidized copper ores."

"The increase in the price of gold in the last decade has led to a significant increase in placer gold exploration around the world. Placer deposits occur in depressions along ancient river and stream channels. In many instances these channels have been covered with materials from subsequent erosion or glacial activity. Use of high resolution geophysical techniques to map the bedrock and soil strata can improve the probability of finding the placer deposits. The buried bedrock surface is often the factor controlling deposition. Ground probing radar (GPR) and seismic sounding are complementary high resolution techniques which can be used to map bedrock topography and soil stratigraphy. Current radar instrumentation operates best in coarse grained soils. Penetration depths of up to 30 m have been attained, and stratigraphic horizons have been mapped with spatial resolutions of better than 0.5 m. Although its spatial resolution is considerably lower than radar, seismic refraction achieves superior penetration in electrically conductive environments such as clay and silt soils. The seismic refraction method thus proves to be complementary to the radar method. The seismic reflection technique is analogous to the radar method. Current seismic instrumentation and energy sources however, provide limited spatial resolution and do not permit the use of seismic reflection for reflecting horizons lying at depths of less than 20 m to 30 m.This paper discusses the use of both radar and seismic methods for placer exploration. The radar and seismic techniques, the field methods, equipment, and data displays are presented. Field examples illustrate the high resolution mapping capabilities of the techniques. The radar data agree very well with the borehole data, and in fact they sometimes detect subtle soil strata variations associated with changes of permeability that were not initially observed in the borehole logging. The radar method can give a continuous profile of water table and bedrock in sandy soils. Seismic soundings are necessary to differentiate between the bedrock and water table reflections observed by the radar."

In Comparison to the application of HPGR (high-pressure grinding rolls) in the cement industry and in iron ore processing, the introduction of this energy-efficient comminution technology to processing of nonferrous base-metal ores has progressed slowly as yet. In the field of minerals industry, challenges lies not only in the large variety of the feed material with respect to particle size, density, hardness, moisture and mineralogy of the material but also in complexity of the processing flowsheet, which need to be addressed from case to case based on result of HPGR comminution test work. Whereas conventional comminution test with HPGR in lab-scale or pilot scale needs quite a large amount of feed material, a compressive stressing test of particle-bed in piston-die device provides an effective way to study interparticle breakage behavior of ore material with much less feed. In the present study the effects of interparticle breakage on comminution of a copper ore has been investigated by compressive stressing of particle bed in a piston-die device. The feeds to the particle-bed stressing tests were four narrow size fractions in the size range of 0.3~3.35 mm and a broad size fraction of 0/3.35 mm. The pressures applied were in the range between 30 and 180 MPa. The results showed that the specific energy consumption increases linearly with the pressure; the product fineness increases also with the pressure, but the magnitude of this increase declines as the pressure goes up. Under the same stressing intensity, the product size distribution curve becomes steeper as the particle size decreases, so there is no self-similarity between product size distributions of different feed sizes. The suitability of a material-characterization model for interparticle breakage was verified for this ore. In addition, the effect of interparticle breakage on comminution of this ore with respect to its influence on the downstream flotation were analyzed in terms of size-metal distribution and mineral liberation.

"This paper describes the sinking of a circular concrete ventilation shaft through 110feet of water-bearing overburden. The brine circulation freezing method was used to stabilize the walls during excavation. In order to take advantage of the cold winter weather, a custom-built heat exchanger (natural radiator) was installed in place of the standard mechanical refrigeration plant.IntroductionIn the late fall of 1979, Les Mines Selbaie awarded a contract to the firm of 1.S. Redpath Limited to sink a ventilation shaft on its property in northwestern Quebec. The shaft was to be sunk through 110 feet of water-bearing overburden and approximately 90 feet of rock to a final depth of 200 feet below surface. The water table was measured at 16 feet below the surface elevation.After examining the soils report and diamond drill core from the shaft area, Redpath came to the conclusion that freezing was the best way to stabilize the overburden for sinking. LocationThe mine site is 420 statute miles due north of Toronto, just east of the Ontario/Quebec border (Fig. 1). Access to the site is provided by a development road built by the Quebec government from the Matagami/lames Bay Highway. History of Ground Freezing In the Mining IndustryIn 1862, shortly after the development of mechanical refrigeration, a mine shaft was sunk through an artificially frozen water-bearing formation in the United Kingdom. The first application of ground freezing in North America was for a Michigan iron ore shaft in 1888. Since that time, the freezing method has been used to sink hundreds of shafts throughout the world. Its best known application was to sink sixteen shafts through the Blairmore Formation in Saskatchewan.The same method has been used in every case. It involves chilling a calcium chloride brine solution and circulating the brine in concentric pipes, spaced between 3 and 6 feet around the shaft perimeter and usually 4 to 5 feet from the limits of the proposed shaft excavation."

"Scientists throughout the world have observed radioactive disequilibrium in the uranium decay series. Radiometric and fluorometric determinations of U in plants from the Goldfields district and in sediments and rocks from the Beaverlodge district exhibit marked radioactive disequilibrium. The eU/U ratio in plants rooted in mineralized ground shifts from greater than unity to less than unity for those rooted in background soils. A similar shift is observed in the transition from rocks to stream sediments and to lake sediments in the Beaverlodge district.Results of a Rn-Ra-U survey of lake bottoms in the Key Lake district show that anomalous hydromorphic U from U mineralization is parallelled by anomalous Rn, even though there is much less Ra in the lake-bottom sediments than one would expect from the amount of U present. IntroductionDisequilibrium in the U decay series has been studied for many years and is observed in almost all surficial environments. Rosholt (1959) measured U, 234Pa, 23O'fh, 226Ra, 222Rn, and 210Pb in a large number of U ores and outlined six types of situations to explain disequilibrium. Davy (1974) outlines the geological significance of radioactive disequilibrium situations with respect to exploration. Levinson and Coetzee (1978) discuss possible mechanisms by which separations of parent and daughter elements are affected and suggest analytical pitfalls that may be encountered in the use of radiometric techniques when disequilibrium has occurred. Generally, it is the oxyphile and easily complexed parent 238U (with its associated isotopes 235 U and 234U) that is leached from rocks and soils at a faster rate than are the daughters, 230Th, 226Ra, 2loPb, and 206Pb.
