Late Cretaceous Blue Spur Conglomerate preserved as isolated remnants at Gabriels Gully, Weatherstones, Forsyth, Waitahuna Gully and Adams Flat was deposited during the intiation and early stages of extensional movement on the Tuapeka Fault zone at each locality. The deposits represent successive courses of a single fluvial system flowing across the Tuapeka Fault zone from the up-thrown (northeast) block. Each course, beginning with the channel at Gabriels Gully, was abandoned as a result of uplift-induced defeated antecedence in favour of a new course farther to the southeast around the southeast-propagating tip of the Tuapeka Fault zone. Schist and quartz in the conglomerate was derived ultimately from schistose rocks northeast of the Tuapeka Fault zone. Caples Terrane greywacke detritus in the middle and upper beds of the conglomerate was probably recycled from pre-existing sedimentary cover on the up-thrown block, following initiation of uplift on the Tuapeka Fault zone at each locality. Most of the gold is derived from vein sources in Otago Schist rocks to the north, and/or associated placers. Hydrothermal veins at Waipori, Hindon, Barewood, and Macraes are the most likely primary sources. There is no evidence to support previous interpretations of deposition by river systems flowing from the southwest, or axially along the Tuapeka Fault zone from northwest to southeast. High gold grades within Blue Spur Conglomerate should have a linear trend more or less similar to the orientation of the host channels, but are likely to drop off rapidly to the southwest. Extensions of the conglomerate-filled channels are unlikely to be preserved, but there is a strong probability that younger placers recycled from the former channels exist.

Up to 19 chemical parameters were studied in flotation pulps in six Australian lead-zinc concentrators with the aim of obtaining a better understanding of the nature of, and changes in, the chemical environment. This paperdiscusses pH, redox potential, and oxygen concentrations, which were all measured continuously.Two plants operated at natural pH in slightly acid circuit and one at natural pH in alkaline circuit, and pH was stable at all these plants. In two plants varying amounts of cement fill were present in mill feed and pHwas variable. At the other plant pH was controlled with soda ash and lime.Redox potentials became more positive as the pulp passed through the plant. The minimum change was 20 mV and the maximum about 250 mV. Potentials tended to be variable at any point early in the circuit, but were more stable later on. In some plants reagent additions had no noticeable effect on redox potentials. However in the two plants operating in acid circuit the redox potential of .zinc rougher feed was markedly affected by changes in copper sulphate addition rate. Sodium sulphite additions had an effect at other plants.Oxygen concentrations in grinding circuits tended to be low (30 per cent of saturation) and very variable. Flotation was usually conducted in pulps at least 90 per cent saturated with oxygen. Addition of sodium sulphite had a marked effect on oxygen content in one plant, but less effect in two others.Statistically significant relationships were found in some plants between pH and redox potential, redox potential and oxygen saturation, and oxygen saturation and pH.Improved control of copper sulphate and sodium sulphite additions could result from applications of this work.

The flotation of fine coal (minus 0.5 mm) often requires the addition of an insoluble hydrocarbon collector to apparently promote the adhesion of coal particles to air bubbles. A series of experiments was conducted using a radiotracer and narrow size fractions of clean coal to determine the effect of particle size distribution, collector addition rate, desliming of feed and emuIisification of collector on the distribution of collector between the different size fractions. The concentration of collector per gram of each size fraction was found to be approximately proportional to (average particle size)-2 except if the collector was emulsified prior to addition, the dependence altered to approximately (average particle size)-1. Mechanistic consequences are discussed.

A forecast of energy demand in the non-commu- nist world to the year 1990 is presented with com- ments on the expected effectiveness of conservation efforts in achieving more efficient utilization of energy. A forecast of energy supply for the same period is presented showing the contribution of oil, gas, hydropower, coal, and nuclear fuels, with brief comments on the factors constraining the rate of growth of non-oil energy supplies. The role of `synthetic fuels', i.e. liquid or gaseous fuels produced from coal, oil shale, and tar sands, is reviewed with brief discussion of factors affecting the development of this industry. In somewhat greater details, the growth of demand for oil by geographic regions is analyzed. Particular attention is directed to the source of the oil supplies which will be required. The anticipated rate of discovery of new oil reserves is discussed with comments on lead times required in the development of new discoveries in hostile environments such as the Arctic and deep oceans. The continuing importance of oil supplied from countries which are members of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) is illustrated. Oil will continue to be the marginal ('balancing') source of world energy supply throughout the forecast period and although it now appears that oil supplies will be sufficient to balance the energy equation during the 1980s, little flexi- bility will exist to cope with unexpected growth in demand or slippage in supply. Prudent energy re- source management will require major efforts to stimulate conservation and also to stimulate the rapid development of conventional and new forms of energy supplies and changes in energy consump- tion patterns to utilize the new supplies. Because of the long lead times and the massive capital require- ments involved, governmental policies are needed soon which will stimulate conservation and which will encourage businesses to move rapidly to assure the energy supplies the world will require in the 1990s.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Kulumadau deposit represents an intermediate-sulfidation epithermal gold deposit (3.8 Mt at 2.3 g/t, Ag:Au = 1). Mineralisation is primarily confined to hydrothermal breccias within pre-existing fault zones, where it is disseminated throughout a hydrothermal matrix comprising chlorite-quartz-adularia-illite-I/S clays-calcite-pyrite. The host sequence represents numerous mid-Miocene pyroclastic flow eruptions within a tectonically active emergent shallow marine to subaerial depositional setting. Subsequent growth faulting was responsible for debris avalanches, which were subsequently cut by reverse faults. Faults were exploited by hydrothermal fluids, with the heightened porosity at the juncture between faults and debris material facilitating boiling of the ore constituents. Fluid inclusion studies suggest that fluid mixing between meteoric fluids and magmatic fluids, accompanied by boiling, were the primary mechanisms for gold deposition. In several of the States of Australia, mining on private property has been seriously hampered by the fact that large areas of land have been alienated from the Crown before the discovery of gold or other minerals. In Western Australia this difficultyhas only occurred to a small extent, and has largely been overcome by an act entituled "An Act to Permit Mining on Private Property, No. XXIX., 'October, 28th, 1898." Under this act, the holder of a miner's right can apply for a gold mining lease on private land; such applicant may treat privately with the owner of such land as to the amount of compensation to be paid for surface ,damage, or the case may be brought before the Warden who will assess the damages. Private land used as a garden, orchard, or vineyard is exempt from lease, unless the applicant has authority from the owner, or such lease is limited to a greater depth than 100 feet from the lowest part of the surface.No lease shall be granted of any mines under any private land in any municipality unless either the applicant has authority from the owner, or such lease is limited to a greater depth than two hundred feet from the lowest part of the surface.The same regulation applies to leases of private land on which any hospital, asylum, or public building is situated or under or within one hundred and fifty yards laterally of any...

Automatic control of semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mills has often been considered complex. Recent experiences at Century Zinc (worldÆs second largest open pit zinc mine) refute this. Together with operating knowledge and appropriate control techniques high quality control is achievable. In this application model-based, constraint, and multiple output control were employed. The control was implemented using standard blocks in the plant DCS. The resulting overall control strategy fulfils the operating objectives and controls the mill with minimal operator involvement over 95 per cent of the time. Previous campaigns using expert systems and complex DCS based control have lacked durability. Their fall into disuse is briefly discussed.

The Ernest Henry Mine is currently a copper-gold open pit operation situated in north-west Queensland, Australia. It is owned and operated by Xstrata Copper with a current throughput of 11 million tonnes per annum; however, open pit operations are scheduled to cease in late 2011. The deposit dips at approximately 45¦ and extends for at least another 400 vertical metres below the final 530 m deep pit design. Resource drilling from 2002 until mid 2008 has enabled an Indicated Mineral Resource to be established to 1000 m below surface. Scoping and prefeasibility studies (PFS) have been completed toward determining if this resource is suitable for underground mining and a feasibility study is currently progressing with a sublevel caving (SLC) concept. This paper briefly describes the process by which the SLC method was selected, conclusions regarding the non-selected methods, and then discusses the optimisation process used to derive the mining plan. The key optimisation parameters include the production drive spacing, level spacing, draw strategy, cut-off grade and production rate. Key risks will then be assessed and economic sensitivities studied. Final sensitivities will use Monte Carlo simulations to improve the transparency of the projectÆs risk profile. The feasibility study (FS) began in March 2008 and this paper describes the main optimisation steps at the time of writing and outlines the plan for study completion through to March 2009.

The cost of power is an important matter to mining companies generally and this thought that the members of the Australasian Institute of Engineers, as well as the engineering and mining professions generally would be interested in any proposal for the reduction of that cost has led to the presentation of this paper.The writer trusts that the description will be found clear and increase the interest in this interesting subject. In the up of the electrical arrangements touched on in this paper, the author has had the able assistance of his friend Mr. Mars, to whom he offers his hearty thanks. The selection of the best class of power plant for a mine is a very difficult and large problem and it is quite out of place to dogmatise that anyone of the many systems that offer is better than another, eg that the all electrical is better than the partly direct steam-driven and partly electrical, or that a gas plant is better than a steam plant. Such a selection is one that calls for very careful and close consideration, in each particular case, of a large number of before it is possible to arrive at a proper decision.

ABSTRACTMechanised cut and fill stoping in the Racecourse orebodies between II and 9 levels was started in 1964.Five stopes are in progress over the two level interval, extracting the full strike length (600-2,000 ft) of each orebody without transverse pillars.Each stope is served by a central 10 ft by 12 ft service intake ventilation raise and an 8 ft by 8 ft return air raise at each end of the stope. Each stope is divided into two sections for drilling. firing. mucking, and fillingto maintain steady production. All equipment is kept in the stope for one level lift stoping. Gardner-Denver 2 boom jumbos are used for uphole drilling and Wagner ST 5 Scooptrams for loading and transport to ore passes located in the footwall of the orebody. A Wagner PTIO is used for materials handling and scaling of the stope backs.Mill tailings, after one stage of cycloning are used to fill the stope, one section at a time. About 80 per cent of the water is removed by decantation while the remainder percolates through hessian-covered pipes and boxes.The ore is passed to 11 level where it is hauled by the 3 ft 6 in. gauge train to the tipple at the shaft area. The ore is crushed underground before hoisting to the surface.A performance of about 100 ton/manshift is achieved by the drilling, blasting, and mucking crews in the stopes.

Iron ore is AustraliaÆs largest commodity export and is vitally important to AustraliaÆs current and future prosperity. However, while major expansions are currently in progress to satisfy demand, the industry is also undergoing major transformations. Reserves of traditional high-grade Brockman ores that have underpinned the Australian iron ore industry since its inception are slowly being depleted and alternative ore types such as Marra Mamba bedded iron deposits, Yandi and Pannawonica channel iron deposits and magnetite deposits are now being developed. However, the impurity levels in some of these alternative ores are higher and they require blending and/or upgrading as well as an advanced knowledge of their downstream processing characteristics to facilitate cost-effective utilisation by overseas customers. The research challenge is to use advanced techniques for mineral exploration, ore characterisation, mineral beneficiation, agglomeration and sustainable processing to identify and develop innovative and breakthrough options for locating, unlocking and enhancing the value of AustraliaÆs iron ore resources. Furthermore, to sustain the steel industry and hence secure the demand for iron ore, there is a growing need to enhance the environmental and business performance of the industry through reductions in wastes and emissions. Therefore, cost-effective breakthrough and enabling technologies that massively cut waste generation, CO2 emissions and water consumption are also being developed. These include the use of renewable fuels and reductants, waste heat recovery and conversion of by-product slag into a saleable substitute for Portland cement. The assistance that can be gained by the use of aerial photographs in the geological examination of a mineral field is clearly illustrated by the results of a rapid reconnaissance survey of the newly-discovered Mount Fitton talc, deposits, situated in the north-eastern extension of the Flinders Ranges in South Australia.The talc deposits were found to occur about the margins of a large lenticular mass of dolomitic marble, interbedded with hornfelsic tillites and fluvio-glacial sediments of Upper Pre-Cambrian age. Aerial photographs show clearly the extent of the dolomitic marble on which the growth of a species of eucalypt-Eucalyptus Gillei-is prominently developed, and which assists in defining the limits of this relatively light-coloured formation. (See Fig. 1).Upon field investigation it was found that the talc, deposits are related closely to the margin of the dolomitic marble where the latter has been subject to minor folding and faulting. The deposits themselves have been formed by metasomatic replacement of schistose dolomite. The contact of the dolomite with the underlying and overlying glacial beds is also noteworthy for the presence of minor occurrences of copper, silver, lead and zinc minerals.An examination of photographs covering a wide area reveals an outcrop of a massive granite to the north-east of the dolomitic marble, Fig. 2, which was almost certainly responsible for the regional metamorphism of the dolomitic and glacigene sediments, and the source of the mineralising solutions.All these features, as well as the broader structural features of the area, which are extremely important in the understanding of, individual commercial depQsits, were quickly determined with the assistance of the photographs.It is useful, briefly to relate the procedure adopted in examining this recently developed field as an example which may be well worth following on other fields, even if exposures are not so clearly defined. The method to be outlined, of course, will be of maximum advantage. Where rock exposures are good, where the ore bodies are likely to be widely spread, and where such bodies are related to some major geologi-cal control. Although mining is an old industry its management is quite a new science, and its complications are now being recognised as demanding expert knowledge in many branches of technical and professional education. Not the least amongst these isaccountancy, for probably its most important problem is "How to control the expenditure." Unlike most businesses a mining company stands almost entirely in the light of a purchaser in the world's markets, and not as a seller, except say for product so the established and perfected systems of modern industries cannot be adopted for mining purposes. For this reason it has been left for late years to consider the matter seriously, and now a number of well-managed concerns have devised costs systems to suit their own requirements.Very little, however, has been published and even that is disjoined and difficult to make use of. Some of the costs systems in vogue, although elaborate and imposing, are not of very great value for keeping check on wasteful expenditure, or for displaying the commercial effect brought about 'by any particular change in practice, or by an addition or alteration to a portion of existing plant.

THE irregularity of the Mount Morgan ore body presents problems other than those for mining only. For irregularity of outline is coupled with irregularity of grade, and the ore varies so rapidly from profitable to non-profitable, and from highly siliceous to highly pyritic, that the task of estimating quantities and values of ore reserves is manifestly rendered a difficult one, while the actual disposal Of the broken ore demands constant supervision.Four classes of ore are handled. The oxidized ore, cheaply mined and cheaply treated, is obtained by quarrying from the top of the mountain. Below the 315-ft. mine level (measured from the original summit) sulphide ore comes in, and this is divided into siliceous sulphide ore (too siliceous for economic smelting), sulphide ore suitable for smelting, and ore too poor either to be smelted or to be treated by wet process with the siliceous ore. IN this paper it is proposed to present certain features of operating practice at the Port Pirie works of The Broken Hill Associated Smelters Proprietary Limited, in the smelting in a blast furnace of lead ores carrying a high concentration of zinc.The subject matter selected for presentation is:(i) The effect of zinc on lead blast-furnace operations, together with an outline of the methods adopted in actual practice in dealing with the zinc problem.(2) Development of the height of tuyere above the bottom of the jacket, and the extension of the tapping interval and the combined effect of both factors upon the lead content of blast furnace slag.It will later be seen that one phase of the investigation carried out in connection with the effect of zinc on blast-furnace operations was largely responsible for the decision to increase to a marked degree the height of the tuyere above the bottom of the jacket.Due to this interdependence, it has been considered advisable to deal with the two features above mentioned.The high concentration of zinc in the lead-bearing materials smelted at Port Pirie has brought with it those troubles which are associated with zinc in the smelting operation.In the early stages of the history of The Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty. Ltd. the trend towards increasing cost for labour, fuel, and stores, etc., rendered it necessary to increase the lead content of the charge, and reduce to a minimum the quantity of barren flux used.

MINING operations in the Waihi mine began, under the present proprietorship in the year 1889. Previous to this, and as far back as the year 1880, the presence of reefs in the Martha Hill had been known, and surface working on a small scale had beencarried out, without any great measure of success. The only method of treatment in use at this time was the old system of light stamps, amalgamating tables and berdans, and recovery by this method being low, little margin for profit was left, so thatthe property in these days was not considered of great importance and work on the area was only carried on spasmodically by different owners.On the transfer of the leases to the present company, calcining, dry crushing, and hot pan amalgamation was adopted as the method of treatment, and this system was continued till the more modern cyanide process was introduced and applied. As themethods of treatment and gold-saving became more efficient with the application of more modern and scientific processes, the importance and future prospects of the mine became more and more pronounced, and mining on a larger and more comprehensive scale was gradually established.As in the case of ore treatment, mining methods in the early stages were not as far adv.anced as the adopted practice of today, and numerous shafts, levels close together in vertical height.

Experimentally determined and theoretically explained phenomenon of zonal disintegration of rock around the development working brings about the radical changes in existing ideas about the mechanism of interaction rock massive with engineering constructions.The essence of the phenomenon consists in the fact, that forming of non-elastic deformations zone goes on by way of more intensive deformation and destruction of rock simultaneously in several zones, covering partially or fully output circuit and divided by zones of destructed rock. Under the influence of change of massive strained-deformational condition of depositional rock an accidental deviation of zones of supplementary expansion and compression of rock from the previous positions take place. One can observe multiplicational change of the outline, size and form of all disintegration zones in the time within the area of the working influence at massive. This phenomenon was named "fluctuation of zonal disintegration of sedimentary rock around development working".

A recently developed technique for use in collieries is described in which samples of gas of relatively high vitiation value are obtained from points deep within a developing goaf by means of pipes. This technique prevents dilution of small quantities of carbon monoxide by large quantities of fresh ventilation air and eliminates interference from shotfiring gases. By using the technique it should be possible to assign a characteristic ratio of carbon monoxide to oxygen consumed to any district and to predict the onset of heatings.INTRODUCTIONGas analysis has played a vital role in detecting heatings in collieries all over the world. By analysing return air from a district and by calculating the percentage ratio of volume of carbon monoxide found to oxygen consumed (known simply as the "carbon monoxide ratio") it has been found possible, in many cases, to assign a characteristic ratio to a district under consideration. This characteristic ratio serves as an index of the spontan~ous combustion tendency of a goaf area. Any definite and consistent increase in the ratioabove the normal figure· indicates that a heating is developing and hence adequate preparations may be made to deal with the trouble.This ratio technique was developed by Graham (1920-21) who found (Table 1) that the temperature of oxidizing coal was directly related to the ratio obtained from analyses of the effluent gas.Until recently, most attempts to employ a similar technique in collieries working the Greta Seam (N.S.W.) were not successful.
