The rates of migration of high-angle boundaries in zone-refined aluminum crystals rolled 20 to 70 pct in the (110)[i12/ orientation were studied. Following a recovery anneal at an appropriate temperature to stabilize the polygonized structure, boundary migration rates of artificially nucleated grains were measwed isothermally at several temperatures. Results indicate that the rate of boundary migration depends strongly on the amount of deformation and on the cell size of the polygonized matrix, and is related to the driving free energy by a power function. The degree of anisotropy in growth 0.f the re crystallized grains nn&apos;th preferred mientation is independent of deformation; the migration rates of the fast-moving and the slow-moping boundary segments of a gowing grain differ by as much as one order of magnitude. The actir\ation energy fm a grain boundary migration, although nearly the same for both the fast-moving and the slow-moving boundaries for a given deformalion, decreases from 45 to 30 kcal per mole with an increase in deformation from 20 to 70 pct reduction. Re crstallization by the growth of the artificially nucleated grains results in preferred orientation. The Percentuge of&apos; grains favorably oriented for growth increases with increasing deformation. None of these grains corresponds to the ideal Kronberg-Wilson orientation relationship. The observed growth aniso-tropy is discussed in terms of boundary structure. The boundary velocity as a function of the cell inter -facial area, or the driving free energy, is discussed in the light of current theories of boundary migration. It is well established that recrystallization with re-orientation occurs by the migration of high-angle boundaries of strain-free grains. The driving force for this process is provided by the free energy stored in the metal during deformation. A quantitative study of the effect of varying driving force on grain boundary migration in deformed metals has not been possible heretofore, primarily because of: 1) concurrent recovery steadily decreasing the available driving free energy for boundary migration, &apos;-3 and 2) in-homogeneity of strain in the deformed metal.4 Aust and Rutter3 studied grain boundary migration in striated single crystals of zone-refined lead. Although the driving free energy in such crystals remains unaltered during annealing, this method does not provide a range of driving free energies over which measurements of grain boundary migration can be made. In the present investigation, the rates of migration of high-angle boundaries in deformed aluminum zone- refined single crystals were studied at various temperatures, after deformation ranging from 20 to 70 pct reduction by rolling at -78°C in the (ll0)[i12] orientation. The boundary migration rates along different crystallographic directions were determined under steady-state conditions, i.e., in the absence of competing recovery processes or impingement of recrystallized grains growing into the deformed single crystal matrix. Simultaneous recovery was eliminated by suitable anneals prior to the boundary migration measurements. The recrystallized grains, which grew a ni so tropically into the homogeneously polygonized matrix, developed flat boundary segments during early stages of growth. These boundary segments subsequently migrated along a direction approximately normal to the boundary plane into the matrix rystal. Increasing deformation over the range employed was estimated to increase the driving free energy for boundary migration by about five times. The kinetics of the boundary migration process, examined under these conditions, indicate that the boundary velocity is greatly affected by a small change of the driving free energy in the matrix crystals. These results were examined in the light of the current theories of grain boundary migration. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Single crystal strips (9 by 1 by 0.125 in.) of zone-refined aluminum, were seed-grown by the Bridgman method in a high-purity graphite mold (<lo ppm ash) at 1 in. per hr. Precautions were taken to minimize contamination of the metal during crystal preparation and subsequent handling. Spectrographic analysis of the metallic impurities in the grown crystals is Qven in Table I. The crystals were rolled in the (110)[112] orientation at -78°C to various reductions in thickness, ranging from 20 to 70 pct, in 10 pct increments. The desired reduction was achieved by many rolling passes, each being no more than 0.002 in. To minimize surface friction, the crystal was rolled between two thin layers of teflon. For those crystals rolled more than 40 pct, it was necessary to remove the disturbed surface layers by electropolishing at -5" to -10°C at an intermediate stage of rolling. The edges of deformed crystals were removed by a jeweler&apos;s saw while submerged in alcohol at -78° C to obtain samples of about ? by i in. The distorted metal at the cut edges and the surface layers were then removed by electropolishing, with removal of a minimum of 0.004 in. from each surface. The thickness of the crystals prior to rolling was chosen so that the final thickness was 0.025 in. for all samples. These deformed single crystals were each prean-nealed for 1 hr at an appropriate temperature in the range of 130" to 280°C, depending upon the amount of deformation. Oil and gas development in Louisiana during 1935 brought this state at the close of the year up to fourth place in the nation as a producing area. A review of development in North Louisiana centers around Rodessa, the most important reserve discovered in this area in many years. While the producing limits have not been defined, this discovery is one of the major developments of the year. New gas fields were discovered in Lincoln, De Soto and Bossier parishes. The Lincoln Parish discovery, completed flowing a highly saturated gas from the Glen Rose, further indicates the importance of deep-seated prospects in the interior salt-dome area. Minor extensions were made at Sligo and Pine Island. During the year, 126 oil wells and 103 gas wells were completed in North Louisiana as compared with 144 oil wells and 68 gas wells during 1934. The North Louisiana oil production was 9,617,405 bbl. as com-pared with 9,274,050 bbl. during 1934, an increase of 343,355 bbl., while the gas production increased 18 billion cu. ft. in 1935 over its 1934 figure. The Louisiana Department of Conservation gage of Nov. 1, 1935, shows an open-flow capacity of 4,563,725,000 cu. ft. per day from 941 wells in the Monroe field and 682,770,000 cu. ft. from 159 wells in the Rich-land field. A great deal of leasing continues in North Louisiana as a result of the Lincoln Parish discovery and development in the Rodessa field, especially in Bossier, De Soto, Winn, Lincoln, Bienville, Webster, Ouachita and Richland parishes. South Louisiana&apos;s position as an area of important reserves was further proved during the past year. Increased drilling resulted in the discovery of seven new fields: Lafitte, Garden Island Bay, Tepetate, Bunkie, St. Martinsville, Jeanerette and Big Lake. New sands or producing horizons proved productive in 15 of the proven fields. The total oil production for South Louisiana during 1935 was 40,731,-056 bbl. as compared with 23,255,437 bbl. during 1934. In a recent publication&apos; it was shown that wells with a free surface in a homogeneous gravity-drainage reservoir have a hyperbolic decline with index n &apos;. This paper reports efforts to extend this theory to practical field cases. As a first step in making the extension, a large number of lease production curves from gravity-drainage fields in the stripper stage were fitted with the general hyperbolic decline equation, q/q, = 1/(1 + y) y and n in each case being determined by statistical methods. It was found that this equation is reliable for decline curve extrapolation for periods up to at least 25 years. The resrilts obtained were disturbing in the sense that values for the index, n, were often smaller than one, which fact leads to the prediction that a well would produce all infinite amount of oil in infinite time. A theoretical investigation based on the results of the previous paper provides a suitable explanation for these low values of n. It suggests that these are obtained if production occurs from two or more layers of diflerent permeabilitv and thicktress or two lnyers having different skin effects. It is predicted that as the more permeable layers are exhausted, the index of decline, n, will rise from a value smaller than 2, to n = 2. A practical method is given for fitting the general hyperbolic decline Eq. 6 to production decline data. When this method is used, the index of decline observed in gravity-drainage reservoirs in the stripper stage when wing only data over early years 01 decline usually agrees quite closely with that determined using data over 25 years or more. This indicates that the hyperbolic decline equation is reliable for predicting behavior of such reservoirs. A method is also suggested for taking into account any changes in the value of the index INTRODUCTION As a result of both experimental work with models and theoretical deductions, it was recently concluded&apos; that wells having a free surface in a homogeneous reservoir producing by pure gravity drainage should have a hyperbolic decline with n = 2. The present report details efforts to extend this work on ideal homogeneous reservoirs to actual field cases. It should be remembered that both the previous work and the present extension are based on the assumption that the reservoir is at very low pressure, and hence, nearly all the potential available for driving fluid to the well is the gravity head. Attempts to apply conclusions of this study to reservoirs which have considerable pressures supplementing the gravity drive may lead to difficulty. WELLS WITH NO FREE SURFACE In a dipping gravity-drainage reservoir such as that shown in Fig. 1, some of the down-dip wells have no free surface. The previous study&apos; showed that the up-dip wells, which have a free surface, should follow Eq. 1. The following approximate analysis, of a type which was justified experimentally for up-dip wells in the work just mentioned, leads to results for the down-dip wells.

The advent of the space age and its promise of interplanetary flight has prompted new ideas for propulsion systems that will allow maximum energy with minimum fuel weight. The use of cesium as the source of energy for such rocket flights has been found desirable. Theoretical efficiency of a rocket fuel is measured in terms of specific impulse, defined as the number of pounds of thrust per pound of propellant consumed per second. Specific impulse is usually expressed in seconds (the number of seconds for which one pound of fuel would produce one pound of thrust) although it is really a measure of total energy, not of power. The most sophisticated chemical fuels have a specific impulse of 300 to 400 sec; liquid hydrogen heated by nuclear reactor has a specific impulse of 1000 to 1200 sec. Specific impulses as high as 20,000 sec, however, are theoretically attainable with the ion rocket, in which free cesium ions are accelerated across a voltage drop and ejected at high velocity.&apos; Characteristics of the system have been sketched by Boden. The desirable properties of an ion propellant are: 1) low ionization potential, 2) low boiling point, and 3) high atomic weight. Alkali metals best fulfill these requirements, and Table I indicates the superiority of cesium. The use of heavy complex ions such as UCl; is ruled out by their instability and other disadvantages.
