GENERAL GEOLOGY OF THE LAKE SUPERIOR IRON-BEARING AND COPPER-BEARING SERIES. THE geology of the Lake Superior region is of general interest, both from an economic and a scientific standpoint. The presence of large and rich iron- and copper-deposits has made a knowledge of the geology of the region necessary for purposes of exploitation and exploration. The ores of the region are contained in rocks of pre-Cambrian age, 'pith for most of the country up to recent years have usually been referred to as « crystalline schists " or " crystalline complex;" and regarded principally as metamorphosed basement-unit upon which the sedimentary rocks, beginning with the Paleozoic, were laid down. In the Lake Superior re¬gion this pre-Cambrian complex presents an unusual variety of rocks with determinable relations. It has been possible, with the large expenditures which-the magnitude of the iron-mining industry warrants, to work out their stratigraphy to a larger extent than has been possible in almost any other area of pre-Cambrian rocks. The real complexity of Lake Superior geology, the confusion of names and the multiplicity of reports covering small parts of the region, are such that interested persons, other than. geologists directly engaged in the work, may well hesitate to attempt to comprehend the geology of the region as a whole. The following paper is a somewhat elementary outline of the geology of the Lake Superior region with special reference to new developments not yet covered in published reports. Geological information concerning the region has been gath¬ered by mining companies, and by the geological surveys of Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Ontario, Canada, and the United States.. Perhaps in no other part of the country have the mining men themselves spent such large sums in purely geological work. This has made possible the publication of ,reports and maps by the State and Government surveys in much less time and at far less cost than would have been otherwise possible. The. U. S. Prospecting is certainly the world's biggest and best gambling business. It is a game where the chips cost many thousands and where many millions, even billions, can be won. An attractive feature of this gamble is the fact that the players are free to rig the odds as favorably as possible. Only the limited bounty of nature, the restrictions of the laws of the land, the competition from other players, the limited sagacity of the player himself— only these, and other factors, restrict the possibilities for large winnings. Today probably about half the land surface of the earth remains to be searched for signs of ore visible at the surface. It is fortunate that so much land still remains for exploration by relatively economical methods. Looking to the future, it is a good guess that the costs of finding ore will increase in response to increasing technical difficulties. To continue to achieve profits from prospecting, it will become necessary to analyze the business more skillfully, in a more and more sophisticated manner. Whenever feasible, qualitative concepts must be replaced by their quantitative equivalents, improvements, and extensions. THE GAMBLE The fact that prospecting is a gambling business reminds us at once of the elementary rule known as the law of gambler's ruin. I hesitate to mention so simple a rule in this company of experts. This rule expresses the rather serious chance of going broke when the odds for success are small, merely by a normal run of bad luck regardless of the long-run expectations of gain. The only sure way of avoiding this special risk of gambler's ruin is to have enough capital, and the will, to continue the play many times and thus ride out the inevitable runs of bad luck. For example, if the probability of success is one in ten for each venture, there is a 35 pct chance that ten successive ventures will fail in a row. But if one has the capital to continue the play through a run of 100 failures, then the chance of gambler's ruin is only 5 in 100,000. Almost any management, I suppose, would be under terrific pressure to cease the play during a long run of bad luck. To continue to prospect under such circumstances requires great confidence in the premises, and a firm conviction in the long-term expectation of profit. There is evidence which I shall mention that in the future even the strongest companies may not have the necessary capital to prospect on the ideal scale. I. INTRODUCTORY. INDUSTRIALLY, the most important service that geological science can now render to mining in the Upper Mississippi leadand zinc-fields is to devise some practical scheme whereby the productive ore-belts may be located with greater certainty than they have been in the past. Up to the present time there has been little service of this kind, and in spite of all that has been worked out concerning the geologic features of the region, and notwithstanding all that has been written about these ore-deposits, this particular phase of the subject has been, for some reason or other, the very one that has received the least consideration. The neglect by geologists in this respect has been all but complete. The following notes are suggestive of some practical solutions to the problems presented. As here suggested, the geologic relationships of the ore-bodies were surmised some years ago, though somewhat vaguely perhaps. No opportunity for securing critical data appeared until recent investigations of a private character were undertaken, which bad in view the extensive prospecting of undeveloped areas. Fresh from rather wide experiences of a decade in the principal mining-regions of four continents, and after a lenstrum's residence among the chief mining-camps of the West and of Mexico, under conditions which measured geologic hypotheses in meters and rigidly tested their values in, terms of dollars, the recent return to the Joplin field and a new survey of its ore-conditions were fraught with somewhat unexpected results. Aspects of the ore-deposition were presented of which previously there was no hint. Ten years' absence from the district had tended greatly to clarify former hazy impressions. It enabled many features, then only dimly outlined, to be considered more nearly in their true perspective and in their real relationships to their surroundings. 1. INTRODUCTION. AT the Lake Superior meeting, September, 1904, Messrs. A. Gibb and R. C. Philp presented a paper entitled " The Constitution of Mattes Produced in Copper Smelting,)' in which they concluded that ferrous and cuprous sulphides formed the chemical compound, 5 Cu2S, fee. They arrived at this inference from the observed fact that a matte containing Cu2S, 90.4, and Fee, 9.6 per cent (or, in round figures, Cu2S, 90, and Fee, 10 per cent.), did not contain any metallic copper, while one with more than 10 per cent of FeS readily dissolved copper, and with less than this amount retained copper in mechanical suspension. Although they determined the melting-points of five mattes containing from 32.6 to 80.1 per cent of copper, they did not draw a freezing-point curve, as the necessary apparatus was not available. A microscopical examination of 11 polished samples, gave them a grayish-black field of very uniform appearance, except that 5 of the specimens showed the presence of metallic copper. The object of the present investigation was to supplement the above paper by drawing the freezing-point curve of the series ferrous sulphide cuprous sulphide, and to see how the constitution could be further, revealed by microscopical work. The results obtained lead to conclusions very different from those of Gibb and Philp. While their paper bears the date 1904, it was published only in 1906.2 In the meantime, Bolles3 had presented his paper, "The Concentration of Gold and Silver in Iron Bottoms." The raw material which formed the basis of the research was a matte containing Fe, 61.68, and Cu, 11.20

After a three-year period characterized by inflation, recession, depressed metal prices, lack of demand, enormous world inventories, and rapidly escalating costs, the Canadian mining industry is showing welcome signs of recovery. A rise in world metal prices and particularly strong demand for gold, uranium, and coal have stimulated the industry in early 1979. In this atmosphere of growing optimism, over 3000 mineral industry executives, economists, geologists, and mining and metallurgical engineers convened in Montreal, April 26-29, for Canada's largest mining convention, the Annual General Meeting of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy.

Gledhill's paper, read by title at the Lake Superior meeting, but presented first at the New Yolk meeting of the Iron and Steel Institute (October, 1904), and here published under a mutual agreement. E: WINDSOR RICHARDS, Past-President, said that at a recent meeting of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers a paper was read on tool steel, and he called the attention of the members to the high-speed tool steel at the Bethlehem Works. They would have the pleasure of seeing those wonderful works and would see 60, 70, 80 and 100 tons oil lathe with half-a-dozen of these high-speed tools running. PROP. H. M. HOWE (Columbia University) said that they all looked upon these high-speed tool steels as of very great importance, particularly to the machine shop. One point occurred to hire : Had it really been shown that Swedish steel is necessary, or better than equally pure steel that is not Swedish; and is cemented steel really necessary, and is there any advantage in using that, rather than equally pure open-hearth steel'! It might be well if the author could indicate the kind of evidence on which lie bases his assertion that it is necessary to have cemented Swedish steel. Many were hoping for the development of high-speed steels from elements which exist in great quantities, such as silicon, manganese and chromium, rather than from rarer metals like molybdenum, vanadium and tungsten, the supply of which is likely to be soon exhausted. If the high-cutting speed was to last more than a generation, it. seemed to him that they would have to draw upon the common ele¬ments and not upon the rare ones. MR. THE Spanish mine is in Nevada County, California, 21 miles northeast of Nevada City by road, and 3 miles north of the town of Washington. The mill and surface buildings are on Poorman's Creek at an ele¬vation of 3,000 ft. About 35 men are employed at the property, which is producing 50 tons of ore per day. Electric power, purchased from the Pacific Gas and Electric Co., is brought in from Alleghany, seven miles away. In the early days the mine was operated by F. W. and P. R. Bradley. Between 1883 and 1899 the production was approximately $900,0)0 in gold. The ore treated during; that time yielded an average of 60 cents per ton and was mined and milled at a profit. The surface, oxidized, ore deposit was 30 to 100 ft. wide and was mined by the glory-hole method. The milling-plant at first consisted of a Blake crusher an-1 a small Huntington mill; later three large Huntington mills were added to the plant. In 1893 a new mill was built at a lower adit- It consisted of 10 stamps and four Huntington mills. The gold was secured by amalgamation, the recovery being about 50 per rent.

At temperatures near 1000°C, only the (112) (111) slip systems are operatire in tungsten. Therefore, the substructure introduced into the billet upon rleforming a single crystal by rolling at 1000 "C can be controlled by proper selection 01. processing ral'iubles. Using a reduction of 10 pct pel- pass, the (001)[110] and the (110)[001] crystals will deform by duplex slip rip to a 50 pet reduction in thickuess. These rolled single-crystal sheels are characlerized by anisotropic hardening, retention of ductility with warm working, lattice bending which is related to the conlacl (angle, and macroscopic dimensional changecs in the length bid not the width of the billet. When several slip systems become operative, a greater degree of work hardening is itztvoducetl into the crystal. This rolling- condition is characlerized by isotropic hardening, loss of ductilily with warm working, complex lattice distortions, and macro-scopic dimensional changes in both the length rind Width of the billel. IN tungsten, the {1 10}(111) slip systems are operative below room temperature,' while above 700°C only the {112{ (111) slip systems are observed.2,3 In the transition region, i.e., room temperature. both systems appear. It is the purpose of this investigation to show that tungsten single crystals deformed by rolling at a temperature where only one slip system is operative generate dislocation substructure which depends on the crystal orientation. For a specific crystal orientation. the resulting dislocation substructure can be further influenced by modifying the rolling procedure. Crystals oriented for multiple slip display less substructural sensi- tivity to modifications in processing techniques than do single crystals oriented for duplex slip. Under simple slip modes of deformation, very little work hardening is introduced into a rolled single-crystal sheet. Mechanical properties such as room-temperature strength. ductility, and hardness are used to confirm the existence of the different work-hardened conditions generated within the crystal by modified warm-rolling techniques. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Material. Single-crystal billets of four different crystal orientations. grown by the Arc-Verneuil technique. were ground to a size of 0.25 by 0.375 by 3 in. In terms of their rolling plane and rolling direction, the billets had the following orientations: (1101 [001 ] (110) [110] (001) [110] (001) [100] The actual orientation of all crystals was within 5 deg of the ideal orientations. The typical impurity content of the crystals is given in Table I. Polishing and Etching. Polishing was done elec-trolytically in a 20 g per liter aqueous solution of NaOH at approximately 10 v. It was established by the Laue back-reflection X-ray technique that the surface damage due to grinding and cutting operations with a diamond wheel did not exceed 0.001 in. Therefore after each cutting or grinding operation at least 0.002 in. was removed electrolytically from the surface in order to eliminate surface effects. By lowering the voltage to 3 v, subgrain boundaries and individual dislocations are identified in agreement with Berlec 4 where the etch-pit traces on a cubic plane form a square. The etching time was about 5 sec at room temperature. Rolling. Rolling was carried out on a Loma 2-high mill (Model 600). The peripheral velocity of the 6-in.-diameter rolls was 500 in. per min, with the surface temperature of the rolls about 400° to 450° C The billets were heated before each pass for 30 min in argon to 1000 C. Oxidation of the crystals during rolling in air resulted in a thin layer of greenish-yellow WO 3 This oxide was removed after each pass by immersing the crystals for a few minutes in a boiling NaOH solution. Prior to the initial rolling pass, a surface layer of 0.001 in. was removed by polishing. The crystals were then annealed in vacuum (10-4 torr) at 2400 C for 30 min. AMONG the recent mining and metallurgical developments in England great interest has been shown in the development of an iron-ore field covering 26,0.00 acres in Northamptonshire, containing 500,¬000,000 long tons of ore; and the erection at Corby, by Stewarts & Lloyds, of a modern basic bessemer steel plant and tube works. The entire project was planned to cost about £3,300,000. Many improvements have been made in the varied equipment that is being installed, some of which has set mew records for massiveness. There is, for instance, a new roll crusher, which has been manufactured by Hadfields, Limited, of Sheffield, the largest ever built in England, and weighing 130 tons. This machine, shown in Fig. 1, as erected at the Hadfields shops, is primarily designed to take blocks of iron ore as they come from the steam shovel. The maximum size is 54 by 48 by 36 in., hut occasional pieces slightly larger than this may be accommodated. The capacity is upwards of 500 tons per hour, the product passing to a secon-

Although water will displace oil from a petroleum reservoir to a greater extent than gas will, there are some reservoirs in which gas rather than water should be used for pressure maintenance. This is indicated by the high-percentage oil recovery in the case history reports on the Pickton field1 in East Texas and the Raleigh field2 in Mississippi. In gas cycling, total oil recovery includes vaporized products from the immobile oil in addition to oil produced by displacement. If a large part of the immobile oil is vaporized, total oil recovery may be higher than that obtainable from pressure maintenance by water injection. However, the amount of immobile oil vaporized may range from almost 0 to 100 percent, and no simple and reliable method has been presented in the literature for calculating oil vaporization. Development of such a method was the purpose of this study. Several papers concerning the calculation of oil vaporization have been published,3 6 and each is based on the concept dealing with K values — equilibrium constants for the various components in reservoir oils. (K for a component in a system of vapor and liquid in equilibrium is the mole fraction in the vapor phase divided by the mole fraction in the liquid phase.) This appears to be the most logical approach. Yet, the problem is too great for a perfect solution, even with modem laboratories to analyze oils and high-speed digital computers to perform calculations; the number of components in reservoir oils is too large. Because of their complexity no two reservoir oils are exactly alike. Also, K values change not only with variations in pressure and temperature but also with composition of the reservoir oil. In addition, during gas cycling, the lighter hydrocarbons tend to vaporize first. Thus, the reservoir oil becomes more dense and less volatile as gas cycling continues. Furthermore, the greatest amount of oil vaporization occurs near the injection well. Therefore, a simplified method is required for calculating oil vaporization because a rigorous method is not practical. The present methods of calculating vaporization generally require knowledge of the reservoir oil composition in which the mole fractions of the lighter components through hexanes are given; the remaining oil is described as C, + (heptanes and others of greater molecular weights). Assigning one K value for the C,+ system provides the simplest solution, but this incorrectly assumes that K for C, + does not change as gas cycling continues. This assumption can cause large errors because the K value may become less than a thousandth of the original after a large amount of oil vaporization. Another way to solve the problem is to determine changing K values for C, + according to how much of the C, + has been vaporized. To determine these values a sample of the reservoir oil is injected into a pressure-volume cell, and dry gas is batched in and out of the cell. THE classification and preparation of non-ferrous scrap metals is a subject of interest to every individual and corporation that employs in its processes of manufacture non-ferrous metals and alloys and accumulates in such manufacture scrap from these materials for disposition in the form of turnings, borings, short ends, punchings, clippings, grindings, washings, etc. All too frequently the disposition of such scrap is left to individuals who have no knowledge of the subject either from a metallurgical or a commercial standpoint, or both. Much money is thus lost which with a little more intelligent effort might be saved, and in this day of fierce competition and small profits such an opportunity cannot be ignored. Longwall caving, one of the most economical and attractive mining methods, is yet one of the most difficult and hazardous.1 This dualism is inherent in a method which manipulates the mine supports themselves to aid in excavation. The difficulty is further compounded by the lack of an analytical method to predict and control results. This paper is intended to meet this need by providing a first approximation to the mechanics involved. The analysis will be limited to materials which are linear-elastic, homogeneous and isotropic. The rock structure is assumed to consist of beds of uniform thickness with no interbed bonding.2 Consequently, the mine roof can be likened to a beam, in which the action characteristic of longwall caving is the controlled deflection of the barrier supports. This deflection causes load to be intentionally transferred from these barrier props to the working face.3 Two of the requirements of this method, shared in common with other mining methods, are the provision of (1) adequate and (2) safe working space. The third requirement is the one characteristic of longwall caving and is somewhat in conflict with the second; (3) the development of near-failure static loads at the face. Requirement (1) is handled by spacing the barrier props sufficiently far from the working face for efficient operation. Requirement (2) limits the static stresses in the structure to predetermined allowable values. This means that it is not desirable to induce a maximum load on the working face as requirement (3) may imply. Such a condition could produce collapse in the whole structure. It is the purpose of the undercut to limit the depth, and thereby control the failure of the face. Therefore, requirement (3) really means the development of an optimum, not maximum, load which, in conjunction with undercutting, produces failure at the working face, with minimum powder consumption. Stress analysis requires an exact delineation of the structure and loads. The structure will be defined as the immediate roof and its supports. Since the roof is severed at the caving line, the supports reduce to the barrier props and the working face, as shown in Fig. 1. The mechanics of failure within the working face itself are complex and beyond the scope of this study, since the face represents a typical mine invert structure.4 However, this lack can be made good by the judicious collection of field data. The primary load on the structure is its own weight or body load which can be considered uniformly distributed over its upper surface. Additional loading occurs due to interference of overbeds with the structure. Wherever this occurs, the effect can be approximated by a load uniformly distributed on the upper surface of the structure.5 When this interference is intermittent, as with a much thicker overbed, the elastic curve for the overbed is superimposed on that for the structure and the extent of interference noted, as Fig. 2 shows. However, for simplicity, this study will ignore such intermittent loads without impairing the generality of approach. Consequently, the free-body diagram is that of a uniformly loaded cantilever beam with an inter-mediate support, as shown in Fig. 3. FROM the old-fashioned " grab-sample " to the modern timing- . device, which takes a machine-sample with mathematical precision, there is a wide gap which was only crossed' by many years of toil and unremitting endeavor. Even to-day, notwithstanding the advancement in the art, "grab-sampling" is still practiced-sometimes to afford the unscrupulous mine-promoter a basis for fairy-tales with which to entrap the too-gullible investor, and often by milling and smelting companies to determine the amount of moisture in custom-ores. The latter practice is almost as reprehensible as the former, and it causes more trouble and ill-feeling between seller and buyer than all other factors put together. No reputable concern to-day would think of attempting to determine by grab-sampling the amount of gold, silver, lead, or copper contained in an ore, and yet many buyers expect the miner to accept the results of grab-sampling in the determination of the amount of water contained in the ore, forgetting that accurate results are just as necessary here as in the determination of the metals, because the result determines the percentage of weight of the ore which shall be excluded and considered to have no value whatever. Samples for the determination of moisture should be taken with as great care as samples for the determination of. metallic content, and in order to avoid the extra expense of a separate operation moisture-samples should be taken from the sample-safe. As the sample reaches the sample-bin in a smaller stream and by a more circuitous route than the "reject" travels in its path to the outgoing car, it loses more moisture en route, and a constant should be added to compensate for this difference. Carefully-conducted experiments have shown that the difference in loss of moisture between the two routes does not exceed 10 per cent. in summer and 7 per cent.. in winter. For instance,

Continued low prices and restricted markets for crude oil discouraged drilling activity in Illinois oil fields during 1933. Only 36 wells were completed in the state, the smallest number since 1904, and of these the majority were scattered wildcat wells, only 10 having been drilled in producing fields (Table 2). Production was curtailed approximately 40 per cent for the first half of the year. During July, August, and the early part of September there was no restriction on production. On Sept. 8, under the "code of fair competition for the petroleum industry," the quota of allowable production for Illinois was fixed at 12,000 bbl. per day. The state's production in 1933 was 9 per cent less than in 1932. What it would have been had there been no curtailment of production and if economic conditions had permitted a normal amount of cleaning out and repairs to wells, it is not possible to estimate, but it would no doubt have been considerably more than the actual figure. No new pools or new producing horizons were discovered in 1933, but the deepening of a Robinson sand well in Crawford County to the McClosky "sand" horizon (St. Genevieve limestone of the Lower Mississippian) resulted in a production of 3 bbl. per day (Fred Patchel, Savilla Shipman No. 5, NE. 1/4, SW. 1/4, sec. 26, T.6N., R.l3W., deepened from 1122 to 1388 ft., to be tested to the McClosky horizon, and, owing to the rapid variations in porosity within short distances, as shown in the Lawrence County field to the south, one test may not be considered as proving or condemning any large area. The average price of Illinois crude oil in 1933, calculated from the posted prices as published in the Oil and Gas Journal and Oil Weekly, was $0.862 per barrel. This compares with a calculated average price of $1.032 in 1932 and 0.852 in 1931. The total value of Illinois crude oil produced in 1933 obtained by multiplying the average price (0.862) by the total production (4,227,000 bbl.) was $3,643,674. Of the 26 wildcat wells drilled in 1933, only one was drilled on known favorable structure. The Metaline district from 1906 through 1965 has produced nearly 16 million tons of ore yielding 400,808 tons of zinc and 178,062 tons of lead. The sediments, ranging from Precambrian into the Devonian, are schist, phyllite, conglomerate, greenstone, quartzite, limestone, dolomite, and carbonaceous slates. Quartz monzonite and granodiorite of the Cretaceous(?) Kaniksu batholith are exposed over a large area beginning a few miles south of the district. There is minor Tertiary conglomerate and basalt. Abundant glacial deposits obscure much of the bedrock. Northeasterly trending folds, having steep to overturned northwesterly limbs, and thrust faults, striking northeasterly and dipping southeasterly, characterize the deformation of the Precambrian and Paleozoic rocks. Recent drilling indicates that the Slate Creek fault, too, is also a southeasterly dipping thrust fault. This new evidence suggests that the Valley Block, like the other major structural blocks, may in part be a thrust plate rather than a graben, and that thus the district may have greater structural unity with the surrounding region than has heretofore been apparent. The Cambrian Metaline Formation of limestone and dolomite contains essentially all the lead-zinc mineralization. Most of the ore mined to date has come from a carbonaceous and irregularly siliceous breccia of sedimentary and diagenetic origin, locally called the "Josephine Horizon," that makes up the top few to 200 feet of the formation. The Josephine Unit is a breccia of gray limestone, coarse light gray dolomite, very thin-bedded, dark gray siliceous dolomite, and "zebra rock" believed to be of algal origin, embedded in a matrix of black dolomite or black jasperoid or some mixture of these two. The jaspcroid fragments and irregular blobs embedded in the black dolomite matrix and the jasperoid laminae in the very thin-bedded dark gray dolomite suggest that jasperoid was formed at the same time as the breccia matrix and as the laminated dolomite. So too, the marked tendency of sphalerite and galena to be disseminated mainly in the dark breccia matrix and their tendency to be most abundant in the jasperoid laminae of the very thin-bedded dark gray dolomite, even where the mineralized and laminated dolomite is fragmented and engulfed in black dolomite breccia matrix, suggests that in these ha bits the sulfides also were deposited contemporaneously with the sediments. Yet very commonly, veins and vague veinlets and patches of white quartz, usually carrying rather coarse sphalerite and sometimes galena crosscut all rock types. These contradictory relationships throughout the Josephine Unit suggest that both the black jasperoid and the sulfides were original constituents of the Josephine Unit but that, locally, they later were remobilized and deposited as white quartz and coarser grained sulfides. Possibly, at least in part, this "metamorphism" is one of the effects produced during or shortly after the intrusion of the Kaniksu batholith.
