In surface mining operations, ultra-heavy trucks operate on haul road networks which are typically from 10?40 km in length. These road networks are often not optimally designed and maintained and as a result, identifying and remediating road functional defects is problematic. Most surface mine operators agree good roads are desirable, but find it difficult to translate this into an effective road maintenance system. This paper presents a haul road maintenance management system which utilizes an assessment of rolling resistance based on a functional performance evaluation of a haul road, together with mine haul truck operating cost models to derive the optimal frequency of road maintenance. A typical application is presented which illustrates the potential of the technique to manage maintenance as and where needed with resultant reduction in total road user costs and an improvement in service provided for the road user. Solid state galvanic cell with CaF2 as the electrolyte was employed for determining the thermodynamic properties of Nb-Al binary alloys in the temperature range of 973-1073 K. The activities and activity coefficients of Al in NbAl3 were determined. The experimental procedure and the design and construction of the experimental setup have been also explained in detail. Aluminum activity in NbAl3 increased with increase in temperature and shows a strong negative deviation from ideality. The activities of aluminum in NbAl3 were determined to be 0.0165 and 0.0289 at 973 and 1073 K respectively. The stability of NbAl3 has been compared with other available intermetallic systems.

In attempts to correlate mechanical properties with microstructure, it is desirable to determine the effect of ß grain size. Determination of 6 grain size is not a problem where a has precipitated at ß grain boundaries. However, in alloys which have been processed to produce an equiaxed a +ß structure the ß grain size is difficult to determine because ß grain boundaries do not etch. The ß grain size can sometimes be laboriously determined by searching for grains which have some a! outlining the 6 grains. This difficulty of ß grain size determination in equiaxed a + ß alloys can be overcome by heating below the ß transus temperature for a short time and water quenching. Fig. 1 shows the starting equiaxed a + ß structure of the Ti-5.25A1-5.5V-0.9Fe-0.5Cu alloy used in this investigation, and Fig. 2 shows the microstructure of the same sample water-quenched after heating 1 min at 1675"F, which is 25°F below the 0 transus. Mintek has been involved in the development of bioleach technology for many years, initially for refractory gold extraction, and more recently also for base metals extraction. Mintek, in collaboration with its Australian technology partner (BacTech), is the technology provider for the Beaconsfield refractory gold bioleach plant. At present Mintek, BacTech and Peñoles are constructing a demonstration bioleach plant for copper-zinc concentrate treatment. Bioleach liquors produced in all applications have to be neutralized. In the copper-zinc case, neutralization is required for bleeding iron from the circuit and for adjusting the pH value ahead of solvent extraction. In the refractory gold bioleach circuit, neutralization is required for producing a stable iron-arsenic residue. Some of the challenges encountered in each of these neutralization applications are discussed, and examples of results obtained are presented.

The "Service de Protection Technique"of the "Institut de Protection et de Sûreté Nucléaire" was asked by the Commission of European Communities to conduct measurement campaigns which would make it possible to evaluate, on an experimental basis, the collective risk to miners exposed to radon in underground, non-uranium mines located in countries within the European Community. 1. METHODOLOGY USED TO CONDUCT THE CAMPAIGNS This campaign is original in that direct measurements of the individual monthly exposure to potential [a]-energy from short-lived radon daughters are made using personal [a]-dosimeters described previously (1). We call this type of dosimetry "personal dosimetry". The workers who wear the personal [a]-dosimeters were selected taking into account the various categories of workers and their work assignments in the various areas of the mine. Another way of finding out the occupational exposure of these miners consists in making numerous measurements of the radon concentration at the various work places, taking into account the time spent at each place by each worker. This procedure is too complex for an evaluation of the collective risk as requested by the Commission of European Communities and was therefore rejected. Additional data was gathered during these measurements campaigns using the following techniques (table 1). Predictive maintenance technologies including vibration analysis, tribology, infrared thermography, ultrasonic detection, and electrical measurements have been applied to large electric mining shovels. The predictive program was initiated on the P&H Model 2300 and 4100 electric shovels. The utilization of these technologies has shown the potential for improving electric mining shovel availability and minimizing maintenance costs. Predictive technologies provide the tools to assess machinery condition. Availability is enhanced by the condition based planning of component replacement. Maintenance costs are minimized by focusing resources through condition based prioritization.

Laboratory scale flotation tests were done on mineral hematite and aspecular hematite ore using oleic acid and sodium oleate as collectors. The mineral hematite floated strongly in the neutral pH region, with an increased pH range of flotation at higher oleate additions. Concentrates with sufficient hematite grade to meet the paint pigment specification were produced using oleic acid and sodium oleate as hematite collectors on the specular hematite ore. Hematite recoveries of 70 per cent at 60 per cent Fe grade were obtained using stagewise roughing. The interaction between hematite and oleate was confirmed as chemisorption but the exact mechanism could not be determined, as two independent phenomena can be used to explain the fact that the pH of maximum grade increased with increasing oleate addition.

The headwaters of Skippers Creek and the Shotover River are reputed to be among the richest alluvial gold catchments in the world. This alluvial gold has no doubt been derived from reef systems similar to, and associated with, the Bullendale lodes. Physiographically the prospect covers steep ridges and deeply incised gullies between the Richardson Mountains in the west and the Harris Mountains in the east. Vegetation is mainly tussock with bush either side of Murdochs Creek. Access to the area is by metalled road to Skippers and then by 4WD track to Bullendale. Alternatively the prospect area can be reached by helicopter from Queenstown in around ten minutes.

Automation of the conventional grinding circuits of Palabora Mining Company (PMC) required that adequate instrumentation and a control system had to be put in place, after which extensive testing had to be done to evaluate different grinding control strategies. The objective was either to optimize the particle size from the grinding circuit, or to increase milling circuit throughput while maintaining particle size at existing levels. Prior to automation of the process as described below the circuits were controlled manually. No on-line information on cyclone feed densities, cyclone feed flow or cyclone overflow particle size was available. This type of control relied heavily on interpretation of the process parameters by the operator and on his ability to make informed decisions on what the set points should be. An integral component of the automation process was the installation of a SCADA package (SysCad SDX) for implementing the on-line control strategy. A self-correcting model for prediction of cyclone particle size was developed and implemented on the SDX. The model is calibrated using values from the particle size analysers while they are operational. If the particle size analysers choke or fail for any reason, the model continues to provide a good estimate of the particle size. This technique ensures that a continuous particle size indication is available compared to the intermittent reading from the instrument. The continuous signal allows particle size to be used as a process variable for control purposes. A strategy was developed and implemented which allows for the production of a controlled grind size from the conventional milling circuit to the flotation circuit. The grinding control strategy allows for the control of particle size from the individual cyclone overflows. This strategy allows the operator of the process to increase or decrease production rate by specifying a coarser or finer grind size required for flotation.

In 1983 the U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral survey of the Golden Valley Wilderness Study Area (WSA), CDCA-170. The 29,887 acre WSA, located in the western Mojave Desert near Ridgecrest, California, is underlain by pre-Tertiary plutonic rocks and volcanic and sedimentary rocks ranging in age from Miocene (?) or Lower Pliocene (?) through Pleistocene and Recent. No mines were operating in the WSA in 1983, nor is any mineral production known to have come from the WSA. Two mining claim blocks, portions of which are within the WSA, and seven isolated prospects, four inside the USA, were examined and sampled. No mineral resources were identified. Widespread propylitic alteration, with localized argillic and alunitic alteration, occurs along the southern boundary of the study area. Samples from claims and prospects within the altered zones are anomalous in gold, silver and arsenic, and some contain antimony, tungsten and mercury, indicating gold resources may exist. Alluvial sample results suggest recent claims in the northwest corner of the study area may also have gold resources. Portions of the study area are within the Randsburg Known Geothermal Resource Area while other segments are considered prospectively valuable for oil and gas and for sodium.

Procedures for detecting and locating seismic sources are adapted to the case of entrapped miners. During an emergency the entrapped miner is likely to generate seismic signals, by knocking against the walls of the shaft. With a seismic array station deployed near the disaster area, the seismic signals can be recorded. Two algorithms are presented for the location of the source from the arrival times of a seismic phase: The first algorithm produces one, most probable location, under the assumption of constant velocity of propagation of seismic waves in the medium. The second algorithm is similarly applicable, however without any restriction on the seismic velocities in the medium between the source and the array. While the first algorithm uses an analytic approach, the second one is based on a trial and error procedure. The second algorithm gives locations with arbitrarily high accuracies, depending only on the accuracy of arrival time measurements and on the compatibility of the true velocity distribution and the assumed velocity model. The algorithm is shown not to require under certain conditions direct .arrival time measurements, thus eliminating a potential source of errors in the location of entrapped miner.

A bubble population balance model is proposed for the prediction of Sauter mean bubble diameters in mechanical flotation cells. In the model, the flotation cell is treated as two separate, statistically homogeneous zones?the impeller zone, and the bulk tank zone. Balance functions for the rates of bubble breakage, coalescence, recirculation and inlet-outlet events are proposed based on classical chemical engineering research in two- and three-phase fluid mixing systems. An initial simulation of the population balance model shows trends in bubble size distributions comparable to measured distributions in industrial mechanical flotation cells.

Eng.(Metallurgical Engineering) degree The interrelationship between mineral liberation and leaching behaviour of a gold ore is ill defined, mainly due to the complexity of both leaching and mineral liberation. This study presents a neural network approach to modelling the liberation of gold bearing ores. A complete mineralogical analysis of unmilled and milled ores, including gold deportment and gangue content are used as inputs to a self-organizing neural net, which generates order preserving topological maps. The arrangement and shapes of these clusters are coupled to unmilled free gold data to predict gold liberation in milled ores (absolute error: 8.1%). Moreover, the self-organizing maps were diagnostic of the quality of data used, indicating that the relationship between particle size and gangue material content requires further investigation.

Problems with the stability and performance of rockpasses in deep-level mines are common. This paper presents the results of an investigation into the recorded performance of rockpasses in deep-level gold mines. Records relevant to the geological environment in which the passes are excavated, their excavation details, and their historical performance are not at all well documented on mines. In general, the quality of data available from mines is poor. The investigation showed that very large spans frequently developed in passes during use, and that rock mass quality, the orientation of the pass with respect to the dip of the strata, and the magnitude of the stress acting normal to the axis of the pass were the main factors of influence. From the historical information obtained, the risks of instability in rockpasses are identified.

A custom-designed shotcrete system, consisting of an 8-m3 (10-cu-yd) transit mixer and a shotcrete spray boon carrier, is used by a two-man crew to transport and place up to 25 m3 (32 cu-yd) of steel fiber reinforced, dry, silica fume shotcrete per 11-hour shift. Shotcrete is custom blended by a local supplier and delivered predampened. Mix design and quality control are performed with a computer program that develops and graphs a properly balanced mix based upon the materials sieve analyses.

Heat of formation values for mercuric sulfide appear in all the comprehensive listings of thermodynamic data, but experimentally determined entropy values have been lacking. Consequently, all free energy calculations involving mercuric sulfide have been based upon estimated entropy values. This paper reports Bureau of Mines measurements of the low-temperature heat capacity of red mercuric sulfide (cinnabar) and the entropy value at 298.15° K. derived therefrom. The entropy value was combined with heat data to obtain free energy values for the formation of red mercuric sulfide from liquid or gaseous mercury and from rhombic or gaseous diatomic sulfur.

This paper presents a hydrologic closure design concept to minimize the risk of water discharges from closed mine tailings facilities. It evaluates the applicability of U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission guidelines to develop acceptable designs for the closure of tailings facilities that have a calculated adequate surcharge capacity for environmental protection and an emergency spillway for dam safety. The guidelines provide a basis to estimate an acceptable surcharge capacity of a Probable Maximum Flood series for storage of surface runoff. To be conservative and for redundancy with respect to dam safety, an emergency spillway is provided to pass the Probable Maximum Flood. Depending on the annual water balance, the surcharge capacity may be used by surface runoff and minor amounts of sediment that accumulates in the impoundment from year to year. The emergency spillway crest is then set at this level or above the surcharge capacity, whichever is higher. An example is given of the active Red Dog Mine tailings facility in Alaska where this method was used for the preliminary design of the tailings main dam at its ultimate closure configuration.

All samples were obtained and analyzed as part of U.S. Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economies. This survey has been conducted since 1917. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and chromatograph.

Milling circuits are known to be difficult to control. In order to address these difficulties, it was decided to develop and test a model predictive controller (MPC) for a milling circuit. A milling simulator was written using Microsoft Visual C++ and used to design and test the MPC controller. Due to the large number of tuning parameters in a controller of this type, an optimizing algorithm was written that automatically tunes the controller. Good, robust control was obtained when the controller was tuned using this algorithm. Control was further improved by combining feedback and feed forward control and by using quadratic programming in the MPC algorithm. The movement of the manipulated variables was reduced by using a novel technique that allows the controlled variable to vary within a specified region around the set point. An optimiser controller was also successfully implemented to control the circuit at its maximum throughput.

Ticor SA began with a detailed feasibility study in 1995. The Hillendale mine (situated between Richards Bay and Empangeni) and mineral separation plant were approved in 2000. The smelter, just outside Empangeni, consists of two 36 MW DC arc furnaces that were commissioned in 2003. Experiences gained during the initial commissioning of the furnaces proved valuable in later commissioning work, as shown by the increase in ramp-up rates. The capacity of the plant is 250 kt/a TiO2slag and 145 kt/a of pig iron.
